The Time is Now

Everyone talks about the various Golden Ages— the Golden Age of television, the Golden Age of movies, and so forth. I would argue that Las Vegas is in the Golden Age of live music, right here and now. We have built countless venues for live performers (including the soon-to-open MSG Sphere), and not only are they all constantly being used, all are being packed with fans who cannot get enough. Artists from every genre and generation enjoy great success here—some have even planted roots and established residencies. It all means one thing: No matter whom you listen to, odds are you’ll be able to catch them in Las Vegas sooner or later.

This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is a perfect example of that. Depeche Mode fans no doubt already have their tickets for the legendary group’s performance at T-Mobile Arena (“Just Can’t Get Enough,” p. 12), while fans of the Red Hot Chili Peppers are probably already lining up for their show at Allegiant Stadium (“Like a Dream,” p. 17 ). And Sting fi nishes up his My Songs residency at Caesars Palace (“Virtuoso in Vegas,” p. 34).

Entertainment options don’t stop there, however. Blue Man Group at Luxor recently unveiled a VIP experience fans will defi nitely want to check out (“Beyond the Paint,” p. 32), while BattleBots: Destruct-A-Thon at the Caesars Entertainment Studios continues to enthrall its fans (“Kick Some Bot,” p. 38).

Don’t forget to fuel up while you’re out there having fun! Dining options in this week’s issue include Morimoto Las Vegas at MGM Grand (“A World of Flavor,” p. 28), Edge Steakhouse at Westgate Las Vegas (“Nothing But the Best,” p. 20), and Todd English’s Olives at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (“A Room for All Seasons,” p. 18).

Enjoy the Golden Age this week!

Just Can’t Get Enough

Influential band visits Vegas during latest concert run

It’s been six years since Depeche Mode’s last album and four years since the final show of the group’s last tour. The absence only whetted the appetites of its fans, but while planning and preparations for its latest full-length recording Memento Mori were underway, vocalist David Gahan and main songwriter Martin Gore received news that founding member Andy Fletcher passed away unexpectedly in May due to aortic dissection, an injury to the main artery connected to the heart.

Founding member Fletcher had long been the conduit between Gahan, the heart of Depeche Mode, and Gore, the brains. While Alan Wilder, who left the group in 1995, was considered the quartet’s most accomplished musician, Fletcher segued into becoming its soul as Depeche Mode’s early career, total transition to synthesizers rendered his position as bass player obsolete. His role became more of a spirited team member and No. 1 fan.

Gahan and Gore had already decided on the title of the new album, due to be released the day after the March 23 start of the latest tour in Sacramento, before Fletcher’s death, but it took on new meaning. “Memento mori” translates roughly as “remember you will one day die” and was meant as a reminder to people in power to be humble. It also has a “seize the day” meaning that the creative core of Depeche Mode embraced: We are mortal, therefore we must live life to the fullest.

Fletcher’s passing added a new dimension to the already-chosen album title. The only way forward was to carry on. Depeche Mode has been together now for more than 40 years, brought synth-pop influenced by industrial music to the masses, indulged in excess and survived substance abuse. Gahan’s voice is in fabulous shape judging from an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and if Gore’s collaboration with Richard Butler of Psychedelic Furs on lead single “Ghosts Again” is any indication, fans will not be disappointed. –Matt

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

Medieval merriment makes marvelous memories

Deep within the recesses of the battlement-crowned resort named for King Arthur’s sacred sword there is a realm where medieval behavior rules the day, mortal combat is commonplace and eating with one’s hands is not merely tolerated, but mandatory. Tournament of Kings, one of the Strip’s longest-running shows, is a favored place of brave knights representing thousandyear-old thrones to gather and share company, swap stories, clash swords and display expert horsemanship to shouts of “Huzzah!” from crowds.

Hearty Cornish hen dinners (dietary accommodations may be available upon request) are served to guests, making flatware unnecessary and conserving precious metals for swordsmiths. Monarchs and aristocracy make merry, dancers twirl and pounding on tables is a time-honored tradition of showing enthusiasm.

The evening is hosted by the wizard, whose pyrotechnical prowess is impressive but has not yet been lethal to the leagues of Las Vegas visitors in Tournament of Kings ’ more than two decades of history. The skills of the warriors who cross swords, on the other hand, improve with every show. Sounds of metal striking metal resound through

the arena as armor-plated knights thrust and parry. One lapse of split-second timing can make the difference between victory or defeat.

Timing is even more important when knights ride towards each other on horseback at top speeds. Jousting is the deadliest of games, having brought a sudden end to many a monarch’s reign. The chances of being unseated, trampled on, impaled or blinded is intimidating, but the tradition lives on at Excalibur. Nearly a dozen horses from the Tournament of Kings ’ stables take part.

Ultimately, the eternal forces of good and evil square off in a special effects climax filled with smoke and fire. The sounds are as intense as the sights, with the proceedings having the magical effect of maintaining the attention of younger audience members. There was no social media during the medieval era. There was chivalry, honor, and spectacle. There were dukes and damsels, dining halls and dark forces.

And these elements are all present at Excalibur during each show. Time marches on, but the Middle Ages never end at Tournament of Kings –Matt Kelemen

Like a Dream

Band returns to Vegas amid its world tour

The Red Hot Chili Peppers brings its Global Stadium Tour to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas for the second time Saturday evening, playing its second concert after a five-week break. The band crisscrossed North America after heating up the stage at Allegiant Stadium in August, then traversed the Pacific Ocean for dates in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Japan. Making space for a break gave the supergroup a chance to rest and reset before burnout from travel could make its performances anything less

than red hot. The boys will need a break after wrapping the tour in Europe this summer, so this spring’s leg may be the last time to catch the funk-punk combo in the U.S. for a while. The Vegas date won’t be a repeat of August, either. The band has been varying setlists in the tour, enhancing the spontaneity of its customary high-energy performances.

The band’s latest album, Return of the Dream Canteen, was released two months after the August Allegiant Stadium show. That setlist ranged from Mother’s Milk material to songs from

Unlimited Love, which marked the return of guitarist John Frusciante. Fans in Vegas heard that album’s opener “Black Summer” and the tour debut of “Blood Sugar Sex Magik,” but Japanese audiences experienced Dream Canteen tracks such as “Tippa My Tongue,” “Eddie” and “Reach Out.” Expect a fresh set by a refreshed awesome foursome. –Matt Kelemen

A Room for All Seasons

Virgin Hotels Las Vegas restaurant celebrates Mediterranean cuisine

This is a diet I can get behind. Although the traditional Mediterranean diet is rich in veggies, beans, nuts, seeds and seafood, the Mediterranean diet at Todd English’s Olives at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas also has a few additions to enliven your night. Situated off the main corridor into Virgin, the entry into Olives leads past a bar area where a good luck chicken greets guests on one side, while lovely fragrances emanate from the kitchen opposite. The airy dining room is backed by a wall of windows looking onto the patio beyond. Cushy booths nestle on that wall, and modern tables, chairs and murals fill in the rest.

Cocktails range from barrel-aged Manhattans and Old-Fashioneds to sweet things like the Olives espresso martini vanilla vodka and Kahlua. Start with a lovely opener, tapenades and hummus served with tender focaccia. Although everyone will have their favorites, both Kalamata and green olive versions are amazing—savory and salty, with a smooth texture that retains small chunks of olive. Beet salad has a fair few of those components, with the roasted root vegetable placed atop a scrumptious carrot purée accented with frisée, pistachio and sesame seeds.

There are numerous seafood options on the menu, fitting in well with that diet idea, but the pasta options are where that idea begins to deviate. Seasonal mushroom potato ravioli is served with caramelized onions, crispy potatoes and black truffle. Butternut squash tortelli is fragant with browned butter. The classic chicken Milanese comes with arugula, Parmesan cream and tomato, with lemon vinaigrette atop. The eggplant Parmesan is exceptional as well, with a rich, roasted tomato marinara and melty burrata. For dessert, the Nonna’s Cookie Plate features your Italian favorites, while mascarpone panna cotta with macerated strawberries and a lemon olive cake is smooth and delightful.

Olives is also one of the restaurants featured in the Savor & Soar experience from Maverick Helicopters and Finger Licking Foodie Tours (Wednesday through Sundays, flymaverick.com). –Nina King

Nothing But the Best

Westgate steakhouse sets—and maintains—high standards

The only thing nicer than the décor at Edge Steakhouse is the menu itself; both reflect the finer things in life, and isn’t that why you’re visiting Las Vegas in the first place?

Starters here vary from the delectable spicy shrimp, served in a sweet chili reduction, to wagyu beef tartare, served with Kaluga caviar, black truffles and radish. Salad fans will love the poached pear salad, so flavorful with poached Bosc pears, herbed goat cheese, candied walnuts, arugula and pomme cidre vinaigrette.

Steaks, all dry-aged for 40 days for maximum flavor, include filet mignon, ribeyes, dry-aged New York strip, and a wagyu strip loin that’s to die for. Half roast chicken, Skuna Bay salmon and Alaskan red king crab legs give you even more options for your entrée. Top those off with caramelized onions, seared scallops or roasted bone marrow. And for a decadent side, the portobello mushroom stuffed with Boursin cheese, or mac and cheese, with three cheeses and black truffle, really gives your mouth something to celebrate.

There are several wonderful chef selections available—three-course prix fixe, six-course tasting and threecourse wine pairing.

And dessert? Try a trio of ice cream, cheesecake or Tahitian créme brûlée— or go big with Over the Edge, a chocolate brownie, fresh raspberries (and raspberry coulis), chocolate mousse and praline nut crunch, all drizzled with salted caramel sauce. –Ken

Gotta Get Back in Time

El Cortez is a treasure trove of Las Vegas history

If you’re a history buff or simply curious about the history of Las Vegas, get yourself downtown and check out El Cortez . The property is teeming with cool ways to experience the past, beginning with the newly installed exhibit From Gambling Town to Resort Destination: The Epic Rise of Las Vegas Guests can take the self-guided tour, curated by The Mob Museum, through one of the hotel’s hallways which is lined on both sides with historic photographs and accompanying text that tells the story of El

Cortez as well as the city of Las Vegas and the famous, and infamous, people that helped shape it.

After your tour, look for the stairwell with a sign that says “Vintage Hotel Rooms.” Head upstairs to check out the vintage corridor leading to the original 47 rooms of the El Cortez when it opened in 1941— you’ll pick up on the Havana-style décor, a nod to one-time owners Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lanksy. The hotel rooms are available to rent.

While upstairs, you can do as the dapper dudes did at the Speakeasy

Barbershop for an old-school blade shave and beard trim. The barbershop has been tucked in the corner of the original rooms for decades, and you’ll feel as if you’ve stumbled on a secret and stepped back in time.

Before leaving, head to the Parlor Lounge for a Manhattan and relax in the vintage surroundings before settling into the old-school restaurant Siegel’s 1941 for a classic prime rib dinner for only $16.95. Now that’s history-making! –Kiko

Cigar lounge offers a well-rounded experience

Eight Lounge is cigar nirvana; and the experience is well worth transcending to. “Eight Lounge is a vibrant and sophisticated lounge where you can gather with friends over exceptional cigars by some of the most revered makers of cigars in the world, as well as spirits and signature cocktails that are crafted and curated by mixologists well-versed in the flavor profiles of premium tobaccos for optimal pairings,” says general manager Ian Floranza. “Our guests sometimes forget that it’s a smoking lounge because our ventilation system is the best of any cigar lounge in the world.” (The ventilation system does not circulate the smoke-filled air; once every four minutes fresh, new air is pumped in, making the space very breathable and pleasant to the senses.)

The walk-in humidor and retail space stores more than 150 different cigars from more than 60 different brands, ranging in price from $14 to $5,000. For those looking for that special or rare cigar, Eight Lounge hits the target with choices like Arturo Fuente Rare Pink Series, Cohiba “Weller” edition, Padron 50th Anniversary, Gurkha “His Maj-

esty’s Reserve” and Gurkha “Black Dragon,” just to name a few.

For newbie but interested cigar smokers, Floranza says, “We always have an experienced cigar ambassador on-site who can assist a first-time cigar smoker pick out and pair cigars with their drinks. Our bartenders also double as cigar sommeliers to help guide customers to different tobacco profiles and which spirit complements the cigar.”

Speaking of spirits, Eight Lounge excels in this offering, too. Guests can enjoy classic cocktails, twists on classic cocktails, pours of special and rare spirits and cocktail and cigar pairings, like the Irish coffee paired with the Arturo Fuente Opus X 888 cigar. “The flavor profile of Teeling whiskey used in our Irish coffee, which is a guest favorite, really complements the mild vanilla sweetness, floral and cinnamon

Or try the popular pairing of the carajillo cocktail with the Under Crown cigar, he says. “Made with Licor 43, espresso and an orange peel, the simple ingredients of the carajillo bring together the earthiness of the espresso with the chocolate nuttiness of the cigar.” For the perfect after-dinner dessert, don’t miss the peanut butter chocolate martini served with a fun edible chocolate cigar and mixed with Ballotin peanut butter chocolate whiskey and XXI Martinis chocolate liqueur.

Outside is a large patio area, the perfect place to enjoy the spring season. “As the weather warms up, our outdoor patio is usually the first area that fills up,” Floranza says. “You could sit back, smoke your cigar, and enjoy libations as the famous Las Vegas Strip serves as your backdrop. It’s a beautiful setting!”

The cigar and cocktail experience combined with the enchanting space of Eight Lounge has remained popular with celebrities and tourists alike since it opened its doors in

2021. “My favorite part about Eight Lounge is the whole experience,” Floranza says. “First, you never know who you’ll be sitting next to. You could be sitting next to a famous athlete, actor or even the maker of the cigar you’re smoking and strike a simple conversation. The hospitality is top-notch and feels like ‘old Vegas.’ I’ve been told by guests that the first time they visit Eight Lounge, it feels like they’ve been coming for years.” –

Friends With Benefits

Mauro Villalobos

Beverage director is enjoying the psychedelic ride

When Mauro Villalobos was invited to join Spiegelworld’s first Las Vegas restaurant, show and bar concept—Superfrico, OPM and Ski Lodge at The Cosmopolitan—in 2021, he says, “The selling point for me was when they said, ‘The whole concept is going to be pizza and psychedelics.’ And I was like, ‘Two of my favorite things! Fun, high-quality products, but not too serious.”

Being psychedelic and creative is part of Villalobos’ personality, he says, and he puts that to work when he’s creating cocktails for all three hot spots

as the beverage director. He brings a decade of experience in mixology to the job, working in top cocktail spots on the Strip and downtown, with a special nod to his time spent at NoMad Bar at NoMad Hotel. “I was like a well-made piece of steel, and they sharpened me up,” Villalobos says.

Now, he’s using his talents to train the next generation of bartenders at Superfrico and OPM and the Ski Lodge, where we sat down for the interview and photo shoot. “My favorite part of the job is mentoring the young staff,”

Benefit Ask about the secret reliquary room inside of Superfrico.

• Libation • The Sun King

The Sun King cocktail is a top seller at Superfrico—one sip and you’ll understand why. “It’s like if a margarita and a michelada had a baby,” Villalobos says. It’s mixed with jalapeño-infused tequila, prickly pear syrup, lime, basil, cucumber, spiced Aperol and “tomato fluff,” a special blend of spices and tomato juice. –KM

he says. “I get a lot of satisfaction from mentoring and growing the team.”

Together, Villalobos and his team are whipping up some trippy specialty drinks that add to the experience of Spiegelworld’s playground. “It’s kind of a like a smorgasbord of your senses—visual, taste, sound, weird random acts happening throughout dinner,” he says. “It’s like Alice in Wonderland—the deeper you go the more you find. Make sure to try all three, that’s the ultimate experience. We’re like the ultimate psychedelic house party.” –Kiko

Morimoto Las Vegas highlights the chef’s cuisine in a dynamic environment

As soon as you step into Morimoto Las Vegas, you’ll experience a zen-like feel that accelerates into a culinary energy, fed by the cocktails and exemplary Japanese cuisine. The sleek and plush seating in the dining area and at the sushi bar are set against a gorgeous wall of Yasumichi Morita photographs, creating a vintage look. Tucked back behind the main dining area are teppanyaki grills perfect for groups.

energy,

Nosh
Masaharu Morimoto had a history of working in the food industry long before he became an Iron Chef, with stints at Nobu and other hot properties; his hard work on and o screen has resulted in Whitefishcarpaccio

the opening of many global restaurants, including Morimoto Las Vegas.

Start with appetizers, and order enough that the table won’t fight over the last morsels—whitefish carpaccio, with soy, yuzu, ginger and garlic; hamachi tacos finished with a spicy yuzu kosho, guacamole and lime; and tuna pizza with anchovy aioli are must-order items. Hot appetizers include kakuni, a 10-hour pork belly served with rice congee; pan-fried gyoza; and rock shrimp tempura. Laksa noodle soup comes with tonkotsu broth, ground pork, red curry and egg noodles. Tempura calamari salad combines crunchy fried rings with fresh greens.

Entrées range from braised black cod with a ginger-soy reduction to grilled hamachi kama (yellowtail collar) with grated daikon; whole lobster; chasu pork on rice; and angry chicken with roasted peppers.

Morimoto Las Vegas also has several steak options, from a 16-ounce wagyu New York strip to Japanese A5 wagyu, all with a sweet onion and garlic jus. Sides include shishito peppers and spicy green beans. Duck fried rice is sure to appeal to almost everyone at the table, with Thai basil and a fried duck egg accenting the dish. Although the sushi and sashimi menu isn’t crazy large, you will find enough items that making a choice could be

di cult. Best to order a variety of maki so that no one goes hungry—try soft-shell crab, spicy tuna and spicy yellowtail rolls, or maybe an avocado roll or an ume shiso roll. Once you add in a few choices o the sushi and sashimi menu, like Japanese red snapper, fatty tuna, smoked salmon, tamago, Japanese wagyu, ikura pickled eggplant or uni, you should be fully satisfied. Of course, one of the best ways to enjoy sushi is to let the chef do the choosing; the chef’s combination here comes in two sizes—just order the large, you know you can handle it.

IT’S ONE THING to get to see one of your favorite Strip shows again; it’s an entirely di erent matter when you get the VIP treatment at said show.

Blue Man Group has long been a part of my life as a Las Vegas resident. I saw them for the first time at Monte Carlo (now Park MGM), and when they moved to The Venetian, I caught them there as well. They’re now ensconced

as one of the anchor shows at Luxor, and I’ve been several times. Each iteration of their show has something di erent, small tweaks that show how hard they work to keep it fresh.

The recently added VIP experience is something megafans like me will definitely want to pony up for. As almost any Blue Man fan will tell you, having a drink during the show is practically

a must. And you receive a food and drink voucher upon picking up your VIP package. Your night is already o to a perfect start, but the VIP experience is just beginning.

The show itself is unbridled fun, set to some of the most propulsive music you’ll hear on the Strip (all performed live). The three Blue Men prove that almost anything can be used as an

Feel like a VIP at Blue Man Group’s Luxor production

instrument, from a stick that’s rapidly wobbled to a piece of PVC pipe. Even certain foods have musical properties (and, in the case of Twinkies, gumballs and marshmallows, visual properties).

The laughs come at a rapid pace here, many caused by the awkward silences as the Blue Men mentally digest the world around them. (Children throughout the audience often o er

their unsolicited advice, which provides some of the show’s biggest, unscripted, laughs.) There’s audience involvement for sure, from one lucky volunteer who gets to have an “elegant” meal with the troupe to a moment where everyone stands and practices traditional concert moves from “raise the roof” to “fist pump.”

702.262.4400

The show is over for most, but the VIP experience keeps the enjoyment going. Another show employee came to collect me and my plus-one, escorting us backstage for a tour of what no one else gets to see: Where the Blue Men (and band members) rehearse, along with a corridor featuring some of the troupe’s Las Vegas highlights throughout the years. In addition to articles highlighting their success, we got to check out sketches of concepts, along with the actual executions of those sketches throughout the show’s storied Las Vegas history.

But they saved the best for last. As we concluded our tour, we were joined by the Blue Men we had just enjoyed onstage, who posed with us for photos. We were also given a bag full of Blue Men-themed goodies like a Luxor-shaped stress ball, blinking bracelet and a souvenir cup.

I could say more about this part of the experience, but trust me: If you’re a Blue Man fan, this is an o er you’ll want to take advantage of. Now.

The superstar headlining residency shows of the modern era of Las Vegas entertainment are known as wellbuilt spectacles, with artists and venues collaborating to create major productions with all the high-tech bells and whistles imaginable. Still, it always come down to the music, and that’s especially true of Sting’s aptly titled My Songs residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, returning for six concerts in April.

The 17-time Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter crafted an utterly satisfying setlist for his Vegas show, pulling hits from his days in The Police and as a genre-jumping solo artist. His veteran band and the regal environment at the Colosseum ensures every note resonates as crisply as the first time you heard

Sting returns to Colosseum with ‘My Songs’

“Fields of Gold” or “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.”

“I think people come to Vegas to hear the songs they know and love. That’s comforting for everyone,” Sting said in an interview with me for Las Vegas Weekly after debuting the show in 2021. “But I also demand people listen to something that’s new, so I tried two songs last night from the new album, just to test the water. As the (show) progresses, I will introduce more and more. It’s hard to introduce new material, but you have to take the plunge.”

When you’re a star of Sting’s magnitude with one of the most recognizable and beloved catalogs in pop music, it’s not di cult to take that plunge. The Ivors Academy, the United Kingdom’s professional association for songwriters and composers, recently announced Sting will be the latest songwriter to receive its highest honor of Academy Fellow at a ceremony in London in May. He will be the 23rd Fellow inducted in the group’s 79-year history, joining the likes of Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.

Even more recently, Sting has released a digital-only expanded edition of his fourth solo album, Ten Summoner’s Tales, the 1993 release that gave the world “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You,” “Fields of Gold” and “Shape of My Heart.” The 27-track edition features the dozen originals plus bonus tracks, b-sides, remixes and live versions.

“Shape Of My Heart” gets a particular intimate treatment at Caesars Palace, to which fans can compare the album version, recorded live in Codroipo, Italy, 30 years ago. Few artists have this kind of longevity; Sting’s music truly qualifies as timeless.

It’s just one of the qualities that make him an ideal headliner. He has as many unforgettable hits as any other artist who has graced this stage, but even dedicated fans might not expect the vigor and passion with which their favorite songs are performed. And Sting’s soulful voice is well complemented by dynamic visual e ects that somehow add to the emotional pull already attached to the music.

“I wanted the show to be authentic to me and who I am, but the way the show is presented, it’s a spectacular,” he said. “The state-of-the-art visuals are something Vegas audiences will love, but it’s also me, and they hear the story of my life through these songs. Having that visual context changes them slightly, it makes them grow a little bit.”

Check out these hot spots to eat, drink and be merry

With more than seven decades of history in Las Vegas, the Golden Nugget still shines as one of the star properties along the famed Fremont Street Experience downtown. The huge property has everything a guest could want—restaurants, nightlife, gambling, entertainment and one of the coolest features in the whole city, its pool complex called The Tank, which features a 200,000-gallon shark

tank with various species of sharks. (You can even take a waterslide ride through the tank!)

One could never get bored, hungry or thirsty at the Golden Nugget with its vast array of options. But lucky for you, we’ve helped narrow down the choices. In this feature, we’ll shine the spotlight on three of our favorite spots to explore for food, drink and fun.

If a night out in Las Vegas means drinking and dancing, we suggest skipping the megaclubs and trying Troy Liquor Bar. This nightclub is way more intimate in size, but the fun you’ll have here is huge. With live DJs and VIP tables, Troy operates exactly like all the other nightclubs in Vegas, but there’s bonuses at this spot. One, you can gamble

Troy Liquor Bar

at table games on the balcony; and two, let’s talk about that balcony—spacious and overlooking the famed Fremont Street Experience! At Troy, one of the best bonuses is its bottle service: the prices here won’t break your bank. For only $299 you can get a bottle of Grey Goose vodka and one bottle of Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut champagne. In the world of Vegas nightlife, this is a deal that can’t be beat.

Stepping inside this hidden-gem steakhouse downtown instantly transports guests to a special evening. The décor and ambience is understated elegance mixed with a great balance of romantic vibes and social fun. Vic & Anthony’s also offers some of the best cuts of meat in the city. Here you can order three options that’ll melt in your mouth: the 8-ounce Snake River Farms rib cap, the A5 Kobe and the A5 Japanese wagyu filet mignon. The steakhouse also offers an impressive specialty cocktails list (drinks and the full menu can also be enjoyed at the bar and lounge area).

For a special experience, book one of the tables on the mezzanine level by calling 702.386.8288.

While Chart House (found in Golden Nugget’s newest tower, the Rush Tower) is a nice spot for dinner, we suggest this spot for some cocktails and light bites in the bar and lounge area. The draw here is a mesmerizing one—a 75,000-gallon aquarium with hundreds of fish swimming around. Plus, you can’t beat happy hour from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Enjoy $8 cocktails like the pomegranate martini and the mango mojito, $5 domestic beers and $6 import beers, $8 glasses of wine, and $7 premium spirits like Dewar’s Scotch and Bulleit bourbon. Nosh on yummy dishes from $7-$11 like seared ahi nachos, firecracker shrimp, fish tacos and prime rib sliders.

BattleBots: Destruct-A-Thon uses mechanical martial arts to create metal mayhem in Las Vegas

Sometimes the debut of a new act or attraction in Las Vegas seems to mark the beginning of an era. Celine Dion’s residency at the Colosseum, the High Roller observation wheel and the fountains at Bellagio are a few examples of game-changing additions to Strip

culture that helped accelerate its evolution. The Feb. 22 premiere of BattleBots: Destruct-A-Thon at the new BattleBots Arena in Caesars Entertainment Studios behind Horseshoe Las Vegas (formerly Bally’s) heralds a new direction in a city that’s long been a place where titans of

combat sports clash. Welcome to the age of mechanical martial arts.

BattleBots is hardly new. BattleBots World Championship matches have already taken place in Vegas, and a BattleBots show debuted on Comedy Central in 2000. The show was revived in the late 2010s and is now broadcast on the Discovery Channel. Interest in building robots for combat grew to the point where there could be a dedicated venue in the city of neon, but there’s more going on than machine mayhem.

“The vision has always been to create worldwide support for robot combat,” said BattleBots co-founder Greg Munson during a pre-event Red and Blue Carpet in the studio lobby. “That’s what BattleBots is. That’s what we’ve been doing on our television show, first in the Comedy Central era, then in the Discovery Channel era. So, we’re taking robot

builders from all over the world, putting them into a tournament-style structure, and letting them fight and see who the winner is … That is the sport and we are the leader of that across the world.”

Destruct-A-Thon, said Munson, is a nightly showcase of that sport featuring the best of the best from both television network eras plus some never-before-seen contenders.

“The whole point is to let them fight, have fun and kick some bot for the audience,” he said. “And then every year, we’ll do a two-week shoot for the TV show,

and that’s when all the robots from all around the world come here.”

Essentially Munson, BattleBots co-founder and CEO Trey Roski and their crew have created a destination for burgeoning bot enthusiasts, and fans of the show can now see contraption carnage in person while visiting Vegas. DestructA-Thon competitors on hand for the premiere included Witch Doctor, Kraken, Overkill, Tazbot and Whiplash. Watching an unassuming robot repeatedly flip a much larger, more dangerous looking opponent into the air is as adrenalizing as a good MMA fight.

A lot of the energy in BattleBots Arena generates from the enthusiastic builder teams, with friendly taunts and audience interactions adding to the electric atmosphere, but it was Roski’s introduction at the beginning of Destruct-A-Thon that set the tone.

“The purpose is to influence kids to put down their iPads and to build something fun,” he said, getting an enthusiastic response from the audience. “We want to make heroes out of smart people. The best athletes and golfers are not the people who will save the world, but the next BattleBot contestant might.”

Ridges home in Summerlin has plenty of room for large families

Las Vegas is home to many luxurious masterplanned communities, ones that offer the highest-quality homes, amenities and spectacular views of the valley and its surroundings. (One thing you quickly learn about buying homes here: Views come at a premium.)

One of the best examples of these is The Ridges in Summerlin, a guard-gated, masterplanned community in close proximity to Red Rock Conservation Area. And a property has recently become available there, one that offers not only a prime location but a stunning

exterior and interior. If impressing company is your goal, well ... mission accomplished.

This magnificent home is available at the guard-gated community of Promontory in The Ridges, one that offers plenty of space for large families as well as security, privacy

and a feeling of luxury combined with all of the most modern conveniences available.

This sprawling, two-story Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired custom home, listed by Ivan Sher of IS Luxury, is simply stunning in every detail, from the lushly landscaped lot and entrance to the wood and stone accents throughout the interior.

The 7,675 square feet of space offers plenty of space between the five bedrooms, and with seven bathrooms, everyone effectively gets

their own. There’s also a four-car garage, so no matter how large your family is, odds are no one’s going to be competing for a spot.

If you’re expecting lots of out-oftown visitors, no worries—this home also comes complete with a fully equipped casita.

As you would expect, all bedrooms have plenty of amenities, including the first-floor primary bedroom, which has immediate access to the backyard with its luxurious pool and spa.

Elsewhere, you’ll find plenty to love, including a media room, office, gym, cooled workshop/storage area and—count ’em—two laundry rooms. The real centerpiece, however, is the gourmet kitchen, complete with top-of-the-line appliances and open-concept layout, perfect for all those get-togethers you are sure to have.
