ARTIST INTERVIEW

MONIQUE SARTOR "Chatting to Monique Sartor about her lifelong passion for photography is both rewarding, and exquisitely revealing. She is essentially a representation of her photographic style. She's whimsical, raw, funny, and completely engaging. She engineers a granular tone into a photograph that she believes makes for a less obvious and more compelling story. Deliberately leaving room for each viewer to layer the story from their own perspective." Barb H

'IN HER WORDS'

How would you describe an ‘artist’ to a child? "A grown up that gets paid to pretend to be at preschool painting and drawing!"

Is your studio pristine or ordered choas? "Hmmm. One would love to answer “pristineâ€? but one would be lying‌.let’s just go with “commensurate with what one would expect to find in an artist’s studioâ€?! đ&#x;˜‰ "

How important are your art titles to you? "Depends on the day and/or the piece, really. Names are important to be able to clearly identify something (eg if someone orders one). And sometimes, a name pops out at you for a piece and then other times, I ebb and flow about the whole thing!"

Do you have a favourite ‘art’ word and why? "Three words: it’s fabulous, darling!"  Â

Everybody has a great ‘App’ idea. What’s yours? "I’m one of the few without any great app ideas, sadly." Â

How would you describe ‘blue’ to someone who is blind? "I’d probably play some beautiful music like the soundtrack to “Whale riderâ€? Â

What memorable responses have you had to your work? "One of my subjects burst into happy tears when I showed her my photos. Sometimes words are irrelevant."

What do you think about when you’re alone in your car? "Gawd‌.where do I start? Sometimes it’s about what I want to create next and sometimes it’s about the kids or what we’re having for dinner. On long drives, I think about strategy for my business, holiday planning and friends I’d love to see as well as thinking about books I’ve read, shopping I want to do and planting flowers in my garden‌everything and anything, basically!"

ARTIST INTERVIEW

'IN HER WORDS' What work of art do you wish you owned? "A monet!"

What would you do to get it : ) ? "In 1992 I went on my first trip to Russia. I went into the Hermitage museum to enjoy the art. I was the only one in the space and I couldn’t get over how little security there was. I was standing in front of a gorgeous Monet (I think it was “Woman in a Garden”) and I walked right up to it and touched it. I waited for alarms to go off. Nothing. I looked around….there was one babushka guard asleep on a chair. I stood there looking at it thinking, I could just cut it off the frame and run. That’s as close as I ever got to owning it….it was tempting, but my better judgement fortunately kicked in!"

What would your autobiography be called? "Bloody hell. What a wild ride!"

What was the last gift you gave someone? "A sculpture of coral for a dear friend’s 50th. She loved it!"

What would the perfect murder weapon be? And why? "I once could easily have castrated my ex husband with a rusty spoon….but for general murder….Either something exotic like puffer fish poison, or poisonous mushrooms. Or pushing someone off a great height like the empire state building. Or if you’re on a boat, you could attract some sharks and then push them off the boat. Wait til they’re at or near the bottom of a virgin snow covered slope, then set off an avalanche. Push them into a volcano (no evidence…it’s perfect!). Chuck them out of a hot air balloon. I heard once about people being tickled to death in the tower of London – that could be interesting. Put a parachute on them and throw them out of the plane so they land in an area with cannibals. So many great options, it’s hard to choose just one, really!"

Do you have an art world pet peeve? "IF you think about it, the snobbery. I don’t think about it!"

Tea or coffee? "Morning coffee, Evening tea"

What would you like to be doing at the moment you pass away? "Having a belly laugh with loved ones while drinking Moscato!"

Has any book every shaped the way you think or behave? "Believe it or not, the autobiography of St Therese of Lisieux. She welcomed hardships as a test sent by god to test her devotion to him (and therefore his great love for her). While I don’t think of hardships in the same terms, I do believe they’re sent to teach us something and to wait for sunnier times."

What art do you most identify with? "I wouldn’t presume…..I think I’m still figuring that out"

The best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? "My dad’s always saying “You’re a long time dead” meaning, squeeze as much into life as you can!"
