Colour & base options for 50cm, 65cm and 80cm Diameter Globes
This booklet is what we hope will be a helpful starting point for choosing your floor standing globe. Each globe and base is made bespoke to order, and any colour globe can be paired with any base.
Bellerby & Co’s team of cartographers and artists will work with you one-on-one to design your globe. Because each globe is made to order, the map will always be up to date to the time of making.
We will work with you to choose colouring for both land and sea, the style of shading, base materials and style, the finish of the wood or metal chosen along with the options of added personalisation. With in-studio cartographers, graphic designers and an illustrator we can customise your globe in any way you dream up.
In this document you will see a wide range of the suggested colour options for the land and sea. Each hand painted globe is paired with a handcrafted wood or metal base. We offer a range of woods and finishes - as well as an options in solid Aluminium, Brass, Copper and Bronze.
Traditional globes spin within a hand engraved solid meridian and can be moved to spin from any angle (including upside down).
These traditional globes have the option of a gloss or matte finish. There are also options for the globes to be fully rotational on ball bearings. Rotational globes will have a matte finish with a resin seal which enables you to to safely touch and spin your globe.
All of our globes are made to be touched and spun. Please see the final pages of this document for inspiration and a further explanation of the personalisation options.
Our globes and bases are handcrafted in London, England and we ship worldwide. The globes ship in special built crates to ensure safe arrival.

This timeless style was the first we ever designed. Available in Oak, Walnut, Cherry or Sapele in a range of stains and finishes.
The globe can be moved to spin from any angle within a hand engraved solid brass meridian.
Shown in Blue Cassini with a matte finish. You have the option of a gloss finish, and any colour globe can be paired with this base. The base featured is in Walnut, and the hand-turned pieces at the center have an ebonised stain.

W ith this traditional style of legs paired with the 80cm sphere, the globe sits shorter. The globe sits in a solid brass, hand engraved meridian with personal commissioning mark.

The globe spins 360 degrees in a fluid motion by hand on bearings so it can easily be viewed from all angles.
The wood here is Walnut and with each base made bespoke to order this means there is a choice of woods and finishes.

A new favourite in our studio, this contemporary base is made of solid Stainless Steel. Colouring shown is Glacial Blue (80cm), with a matte finish.
The base can also be made in Aluminium or Brass in a variety of finishes.
This particular base was custom made to be fitted to a yacht and is safe at sea. It has added personalisation like hand drawn and hand painted illustrations that are bespoke to this globe.
Any colour globe can be paired with any style of base. We undertake commissions and bespoke work of all kinds. Each globe is made bespoke to order and we ship worldwide.
The example shown is a 65cm diameter globe and the colouring is Blue Cassini. The globe is shown with a matte finish, with the alternative option being a gloss finish.
The Brass base has a polished finish to the metalwork, with option of satin or brushed also available.

Bespoke Bases - ‘The Whittaker ’
A 36cm, 50cm or 65cm diameter globe sits on ball bearings so it can be spun 360 degrees in a fluid motion by hand and lifted directly from its base.
This modern and playful base is forged from a solid piece of Aluminium and can have a brushed or aeronautical polish.

Rotational Floor Standing Globe
The 80cm diameter Curve is a stunning centrepiece, with just a few made each year.
Designed by one of the team who made the accommodation pods for the British Antarctic Survey, the base has been further developed and fabricated by heritage technicians from Aston Martin. It is available in a brushed finish.
The globe sits on three semi-hidden roller bearings which allow a fluid 360 degree spin in a satisfying movement by hand.
The base can be paired with a hand painted globe in any colour - and is finished with a protective resin bonding coat which has a matte finish.
The wood style Curve can be handcrafted in London Plane, Oak, or Walnut in a variety of finishes.

The ulta-modern Tri base shows off the impressive sized 80cm diameter in a unique way. Sitting on semi-hidden roller bearings, the globe can be spun in a satisfying and fluid 360 degree movement by hand.

Options to personalise your globe
20 text based edits to your map are included in the commission of your globe. Cartography edits can include adding a special town or place that might not otherwise be on the map - or highlighting special places in a differing colour so they stand out as special.
You are welcome to more text based edits, and will be quoted for this additional design time.
Customers may also request changes to the city and capital markers. Cities are as standard a light grey circle. Capitals are as standard marked with a red box marker. Customers often wish to change capitals to a blue marker and highlight special places in a claret or bright red colour to stand out.
We recommend using warm colours like orange, any shade of red, purple or maroon to highlight places. Cold colours like blues and greens are very subtle against most ocean and land colours.
The decision to add text edits to your commission can be made after you place your order, and we provide mockups for approval ahead of making your globe.

Options to personalise your globe
We offer bespoke illustrations which are hand-drawn and hand-painted.
Along with other bespoke requests like travel routes, this design work will be quoted on top of the price of the globe. The decision to add further detail to your commission can be made after you place your order - we provide mock-ups for approval on placement, sizing and style before your globe is made.
Illustrations are hand drawn and hand painted in colour unless requested in sepia tones or black and white.
For illustrations you are welcome to send references for us to draw and paint from (your dog, your house, etc) or just give written descriptions by email. Please include as much detail as possible, for example if you are requesting a full wine glass - please mention the colour and if you are requesting a person - specify the hair colour and any other features.

Options to personalise your globe
Illustrations will be hand painted in colour unless requested in black and white or sepia tones. If you have special requests like more muted tones please specify.
We will ask you to send reference photos where relevant and paint to match your reference photos.
You can also be as specific as you would like with your requests that you do not have a reference image of.

What is a normal amount of illustrations?
Text edits and illustrations are optional. Your globe is very detailed and beautiful as standard, and customers who forgo illustrations will still have a unique and one of a kind globe.
We have made small globes with over 100 illustrations and large globes with 0 illustrations and there is no wrong or right. It is most important that we are creating something beautiful to your unique taste and style that you will personally love. Whether you have one of two illustrations or 200 we will use our expertise to guide you through the process and offer help and advice.

Lists in the Ocean
There is an option to have political and demographic lists placed around the various oceans of your globe. These lists would correspond to the time your globe was made. They are not placed on your map as standard - and will only be included by request. Otherwise if you have no preference the lists will not be on your globe.
You can also request to replace the lists with wording of your own; a poem, quote or your favourite world facts.
If you would like to add your own lists to the globe, please send them through via email exactly as you would like them to appear.

Leave your mark
We offer a hand engraved commissioning mark to go on the meridian that encircles your globe. This is the perfect place for names, special dates, or a short quote. Please make sure to specify the engraving exactly as you would like it including punctuation.
Longer messages and sentiments can go on the globe itself. And if you do not want names or dates engraved - you can always add names and/or dates on the globe itself - land or sea.
There is a space for an engraving on all traditional bases that have a meridian. For the engraving, 50 letters are offered with the commission of a 50cm globe, 65 with a 65cm and 80 with an 80cm.
horizon bandS
Our horizon bands contain the following, from the innermost to outermost ring:
1. The Wind Rose denotes the classical winds from the mariners compass. Used originally to denote direction in sea navigation by european sailors.
2. Cardinal directions (North, East, South, West) and intermediates
3. The Zodiac with corresponding dates
4. The British Astronomer Royal, from Flamsteed in 1675 to Rees of present. Established shortly after Galileo’s death by Charles II with the instruction of applying ‘himself with the most exact care and diligence to the rectifying of the tables of the motions of the heavens, and the places of the fixed stars, so as to find out the so much desired longitude of places for the perfecting of the art of navigation’
5. Months with corresponding dates
6. Sidereal compass - depiction of constellation positions in rising and setting sun. Used to gather direction by the position of stars in the night sky.

No two globes will ever be replicated and a bespoke variation of this globe can be ordered in any size (22cm, 36cm, 50cm, 65cm, 80cm or 127cm diameter) and with any colour ocean / land you see across our collections.
Customers can commission their own unique version with added illustrations (like ships, monuments, pets, etc) as well as added travel routes and bespoke cartography like quotes, dates, names, or favourite cities highlighted.
