ENTERTAIN HUGE AUDIENCES IN WAYS THAT

MATTER TO HER.

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

A SUSTAINABLE PLANET WITH EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Our vision statement, “A sustainable planet with equal rights for all,” can sound like an impossible task, but Population Media Center (PMC) knows there are effective – and realistic – ways to work toward this goal. We’re highly motivated by the fact that our existence on the planet depends on success. PMC has resolved to work still harder toward this goal. In 2016, not only did our TV and radio shows reach audiences around the world to promote individual and communal behavior change, we also began steps to expand our impact to new countries. I’m pleased to announce that in April, we hired David Walker as our new Executive Vice President to help with this expansion. Our growth is urgent. While some countries saw progress this year, there was increased violence and instability in others. News from the first half of 2017 has brought new urgency. We will keep working as hard as possible to achieve our vision with the help and support of our donors, partners, worldwide staff, and volunteers who enable this work. I invite you to join us.

WILLIAM N. RYERSON

Founder and President, Population Media Center

PMC MISSION: 1

To use entertainment-education and mass media to promote social and cultural change by addressing the interconnected issues of the full rights of women and girls, population, and the environment. Our goals are to empower people to live healthier and more prosperous lives and to stabilize global population at a level at which people can live sustainably with the world’s renewable resources.

WE REACH

HUGE AUDIENCES

NOT SAVING JUST ONE PERSON’S LIFE.

THIS IS ABOUT ALL OF US.

SOCIAL NORM CHANGE

PMC melds entertainment industry insight and behavior theory to create powerful TV and radio shows that change social norms. By reaching huge audiences, PMC’s entertainment catalyzes individual and communal motivation, self-efficacy, and resilience. Social norms can be a barrier or a driver of behavior. With PMC’s intervention, changes and individual behavior create a feedback loop to drive dramatic change in social norms. Sometimes behavior change is made manifest by increased demand for products or services, such as health clinics.

INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR CHANGE

AT SCALE DEMAND GENERATION

PMC entertainment motivates people to want to change, increases knowledge and confidence to enable change, and provides tools and strategies to be resilient against challenges in pursuit and maintenance of change.

Service Providers à

PMC entertainment models the use of products and services, increases understanding, defines expectations, corrects misinformation, and eases doubt or fear.

PMC CREATES SOCIAL NORM CHANGE, INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR CHANGE, AND DEMAND GENERATION

RELATED TO DEEPLY EMBEDDED, PERSONAL ISSUES

MEASURABLE

Every PMC show includes monitoring and evaluation to assess scale and depth of impact.

COST-EFFECTIVE

Huge audiences combined with effectiveness on multiple issues make PMC dramas costeffective.

MULTI-ISSUE

Life is multidimensional. PMC integrates multiple issues to increase understanding and behavior change tools.

ÊVERSATILE

PMC’s methods are reproducible and agile, working across cultures, languages, religions, and media markets.

A STORY OF RENEWAL: ONE STORY ENDS

AND ANOTHER STORY BEGINS

On August 23rd, 2016, the drums could be heard in Bujumbura. The Drummers of Burundi are well-known for their loud, energetic percussions, their bright red, green, and white outfits, and their acrobatic dance moves – not to mention the huge drums they carry on their heads. Today, the drummers were celebrating the launch of a radio show sequel, one that had particular meaning to people and to Burundi’s Minister of Health Representative, Dr. Jocelyn Nsanzerugeze.

“Agashi, produced by Population Media Center, has gained a pole position among great communication and public awareness tools to foster positive change for a better life,” said Nsanzerugeze. “The topics covered in this series, such as family planning, malnutrition, STDs, and HIV/AIDS…just to mention a few, have enabled it to earn an unprecedented popularity among the Burundian population.” Of course, the producers of Agashi (“Hey! Look Again!”) might add that much of its popularity is due to the cliffhanger plotlines, top production quality, and great music. Agashi began airing in 2014 with storylines that spread over two years of broadcast, 208 episodes. In the show, different social themes are woven into storylines with positive and negative characters. Writers and producers are careful to keep the emphasis on entertainment value. Agashi finished in January of 2016. This August 23rd launch marked the beginning of Agashi 2 – the next season of Agashi, which is scheduled to run until 2018.

A LOCAL SUPERSTAR PITCHES FOR PMC

With the film crew in the middle of an action scene, the martial arts superstar calls “cut!” and turns on his radio. Rajesh Hamal, a Nepali actor with so much notoriety he’s known as “Maha-Nayak” or “Great Actor” – must listen to his favorite show, and the rest of the actors drop the scene and join him. This promotional spot ran on national and local TV throughout Nepal this spring as scores of people started to listen to Hamal’s favorite show – PMC’s Mai Sari Sunakhari (“Orchid, Like Me”). It launched in April and will run for two years (208 episodes) in the Nepali language. Mai Sari Sunakhari addresses numerous issues, including early marriage, girls’ education, and gender equity. “Rajesh Hamal is the most popular superstar of the country,” says Rajan Parajuli, PMC’s Country Representative in Nepal. “Because of his extraordinary performance in Nepali cinema over the past two decades and his very non-controversial image, he has become the icon for all age groups. He has never done promotion for any radio show before.” This sounds like a stroke of luck to get Nepal’s superstar to promote your radio drama, but the relationship is based on a lot more than luck – it’s based on a shared desire to improve people’s lives. Hamal is the ambassador for the National Campaign of the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare in Nepal. He publicly strongly supports ending child marriage and gender-based violence. “When we spoke to him about being involved,” says Parajuli, “he said he always wanted to contribute somehow to positive change in the country, especially in the lives of remote families. He liked the themes we are addressing, was impressed with our use of entertainment, and the way we measure results.” Listeners in Nepal have been personally thanking Hamal for bringing the show to the airwaves. “I really find this drama very real. I was always a big fan of Rajesh and now I am so happy that he brought this drama for us,” said Bakhat from Dailekh, in the Midwestern high hill district. “Hamal is generally not involved in commercial promotion,” says Parajuli. “He is always taken as one of the few intellectual celebrities of the country. The people of Nepal believe his words.”

Above, people pose with one of the Mai Sari Sunakhari billboards featuring Rajesh Hamal with his radio.

And those words couldn’t be used for a better cause. Parajuli and PMC hope Mai Sari Sunakhari succeeds in entertaining people and in improving lives. PMC is simultaneously broadcasting another show, Hilkor (“Ripples in the Water”) for one year (104 episodes) in the local Maithili language. Both dramas are off to a great start and PMC has high hopes for measurable changes in the next two years.

“PAPA GOLIATH”

CHANGES When Valentin Mitendo, producer of PMC’s Vivra Verra (“Time Will Tell”) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, learned he would get the opportunity to meet Claude Bangumba while conducting research in Kananga, he was thrilled. Claude was known to his wife and son, jokingly, as “Old Goliath.” Valentin had traveled with the research team to assess how many people had listened to the show Vivra Verra and how much information they had retained. “It was during an interview with a winner [of a Vivra Verra listeners’ contest] that I discovered ‘Old Goliath’,” Valentin says. “On the eve of the awards, we called winners to prepare for the prize-giving ceremony. Despite her enthusiasm, Mireille Bangumba [a female prize winner] told me that she could not come because of personal reasons. I expressed the wish to see her at the small ceremony and she said she would send her husband.” Mireille was an avid Vivra Verra listener and had answered questions about the characters, plots, and messages correctly to be chosen for a prize. During the conversation, Mireille explained that she would not come to the awards ceremony because she was pregnant and tired – to which Valentin replied by asking if she had heard of prenatal consultations.

“In Vivra Verra you insist on this point with [the characters] Ngala and Koni,” she laughed confidently, “I did my prenatal visits and my husband encouraged me a lot.” Mireille then explained jokingly to Valentin that her husband had been nick-named “Papa Goliath” by her fouryear-old son. “Old Goliath” is a negative character in Vivra Verra – an alcoholic with a temper who relies on physical domination to impose his will, and prevents his son from going to school. “My husband was like “Old Goliath” before we started listening to your show. Our son nick-named him that because of his aggressiveness. We continue to call him that. But he has changed a lot.” When Valentin got the chance to meet the real “Old Goliath,” he had some questions for him. “So your child baptized you Goliath?” asked Valentin. “As a matter of fact, my child, who is four years old, when he does something he wants but may cause trouble, he says to me, ‘Papa, are you Papa Goliath?’ He said that when one punishes his sons, that is [being a] Papa Goliath.” Valentin laughed with Claude, feeling gratitude and happiness at this family’s bond. It showed that the lessons have been understood and internalized by Mireille, Claude, and their son. Claude has become more aware, and more in control, of his temper. He confirmed that of course he encouraged his wife in her prenatal consultations – he doesn’t want to be a widower. This encounter was one more piece of evidence that Vivra Verra was drawing the Bangumba family back night after night with the exciting show, and also imparting important lessons that they shared as a family and that will continue long after broadcast stops.

5

“It is something we listen to as a family. When I get home and in the evenings, we relax with all of the children – we can listen to it before sleeping,” said Claude.

On July 15th, fans got what they had been waiting for – season four of Population Media Center’s East Los High was now available on Hulu. To date, the program has received no fewer than 5 Emmy nominations and is one of the top performing shows on Hulu. The popularity of East Los High draws impressive numbers of viewers resulting in the production of more seasons, but the real success of East Los High happens off the screen. Newly published research in the American Journal of Public Health shows that PMC entertainment in the United States can, in fact, improve issues like teenage sexual and reproductive health if implemented correctly.

Researchers Helen Wang, from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and Arvind Singhal, from the University of Texas at El Paso, revealed that the impact of East Los High began in 2013 with the very first season of broadcast. That summer, East Los High launched as a Hulu Original Series, and hundreds of thousands of viewers visited the show’s website to access episodes, bonus material, and resources. It was PMC’s first foray into US television – and it was a hit. Little did the team know that their work would result in statistics like StayTeen.org’s website traffic doubling on the day East Los High launched and 22 percent of Planned Parenthood’s total widget visits during the first season being accessed through the East Los High website.
