2012 ANNUAL REPORT

PROVEN APPROACHES AND NEW DIRECTIONS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

William N. Ryerson Founder and President, Population Media Center

I am pleased to present PMC’s 2012 Annual Report. It was an exciting year for PMC, strengthening our efforts in proven approaches and pursuing new directions. This year marked our first foray into TV production. We partnered with MTV-Latin America on the drama Último Año (“Last Year”), which premiered on MTV Latin America, reaching 18 countries and 22 million households. It was a learning and growing experience for PMC, which we hope will lead to more TV production when the media market demonstrates that TV is needed to reach crucial audiences with important issues. We were thrilled to see Último Año become such a big hit with young audiences. We also created an electronic game in partnership with the Emergent Media Center at Champlain College. This unique opportunity allowed us to use the many theories of entertainment-education in the form of a video game. Male consumption of games is greater than TV in many countries, and this game, BREAKAWAY, addressed violence against women through a game experience.

1

PMC also expanded its radio serial dramas addressing health and social issues, particularly family planning, reproductive health, and women’s rights. Women in Burkina Faso have a 1 in 22 chance of dying from pregnancy-related causes. The ratio in the developed world is 1 in 1,800. These are unnecessary deaths, ones that could be prevented if people had proper knowledge about health issues, if cultural barriers that do not allow for women to get proper care were removed, and if advocacy for getting women necessary care improved. For these reasons and more, PMC started two dramas in Burkina Faso. We hope that Yam Yankré (“The Choice”) and Here S’ra (“The Road to Happiness”) will help make life safer and more prosperous for many women and their families. It has been a busy year, and we have much to be proud of, but there is always more to do. I traveled more than 227,000 miles this year to pursue new opportunities and support existing projects. PMC’s work is never done, but with the help and support of funders, partners, worldwide staff, and volunteers we have done a tremendous amount of good. It’s because of you that we make a difference. Thank you. I look forward to acting for change with you in 2013.

IMPROVING THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF PEOPLE UNDERSTANDING PMC’S WORK AROUND THE WORLD

OUR VISION

We envision a world where the number of people, and their diverse ways of life, are in harmony with earth’s current naturally renewable resources. We envision a world where enhancements in human health, human rights, environmental protection, and economic equality have empowered women, men, and children to make informed decisions.

We work to decrease population growth by providing education in four categories, all of which empower people. In our vision, human health, human rights, environmental protection, and economic equality result in smaller, healthier families and stabilize population at a level that can be sustained by renewable natural resources, instead of depleting resources.

2 POPULATION AWARENESS

PMC knows that strategic and audiencespecific communications results in behavior change. For PMC, entertainment-education has been the most powerful form of behavior change communications, particularly longrunning serial dramas, often called soap operas.

SABIDO METHODOLOGY PMC uses the Sabido methodology to produce radio and TV soap operas around the world. The Sabido methodology creates culturally-specific stories with “positive,” “negative,” and “transitional” characters to model behavior in long-running serial dramas. Local teams of writers, producers, and actors create the program using extensive formative research as a guide, and the range of realistic characters and plot twists gives audiences an entertaining glimpse of important social and health issues. PMC’s approach provides a platform for education and discussion, allowing people to then make their own decisions.

WHOLE SOCIETY STRATEGY PMC’s Whole Society Strategy combines print, television, radio, music, and new media to reinforce serial drama themes and reach more people. Audience research identifies preferred media channels across audience segments. PMC often includes media capacity building in its Whole Society Strategy, training journalists and broadcasters in pro-social reporting.

TRANSMEDIA STORYTELLING PMC’s transmedia storytelling brings the serial drama narrative alive across multiple platforms to allow audience members to be drawn further into the fictional world, interact with characters, and learn in different ways. This can be done through old and new media, such as fictional characters having in-character social media profiles and blogs or a newspaper from the fictional setting being produced for the audience to read.

PMC and the Emergent Media Center at Champlain College partnered in 2010 to produce Breakaway, a video game and accompanying toolkit that addresses violence against women, gender inequality, and bullying in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

‘‘

‘‘

This year, a small international team of undergraduate students organized and conducted Breakaway sessions at three youth summer camps in the city of Hebron in the West Bank in June 2012.

The Breakaway game, matched with the Breakaway Facilitator’s Guide and culturally-appropriate activities developed by local facilitators, positively impacted over 300 children resulting in an environment and attitude of respect despite differences and societal norms.

“By concluding this project, we record Hebron as the first city in the Arab World to receive and implement this educational game that conveys a universal message and is designed to raise awareness about the issue of violence against women,” Breakaway Team Leader Mahmoud Jabari said.

SIERRA LEONE’S

THREE NEW RADIO SERIAL DRAMAS SALIWANSAI “PUPPET ON A STRING” • KAPALA NAFIE “BENEFITS WE GET FROM FARMING” • KOMBRA BOT “WE ARE ALL IN THE SAME BOAT”

A GLIMPSE OF SALIWANSAI Saliwansai represents the tough decisions people are faced with on a daily basis. Like puppets, the characters are influenced by the conflicting messages they receive, from family, friends, and society, which often pull them in different directions. Each character faces his or her own personal journey, with challenges revolving around health, education, relationships, and family.

Saliwansai was a 208-episode serial drama that aired April 2012 through April 2014 and was funded by UNFPA-Sierra Leone. Kumbra Bot was a 36-episode radio serial drama that aired October 2012 through February 2013 and was funded by Marie Stopes International and the European Union. Kpala Nafie was a 10-episode radio serial drama that aired October 2012 through November 2012 and was funded by Welthungerhilfe (formerly known as German Agro Action).

Clinic monitoring of 1,525 clients across 12 districts in Sierra Leone revealed that 57% of all clients cited Saliwansai as influential in their decision to seek family planning services. 8

AN INDEPENDENT EVALUATION OF

MIERAF

In Ethiopia, a UNICEF commissioned analysis of Mieraf (“New Beginning”), completed in 2012, revealed, in addition to other results, that listeners were 3.6 times more likely to know about HIV prevention methods compared to non-listeners. Mieraf premiered in June of 2010 and aired through November of 2011. This 180-episode radio serial drama aired twice per week in Amharic, Ethiopia’s official language, on the National Service Radio of Ethiopia. As Mieraf addressed various issues, it illuminated the tasks and responsibilities of Health Extension Workers to increase community understanding and improve the delivery of health services. When the program started in 2010, there were 30,000 Health Extension Workers serving rural communities, but many people were not utilizing services. As part of PMC’s Whole Society Strategy, a radio talkshow, Fenote (“The Right Road”), reinforced Mieraf’s messages with live discussions with real-life Health Extension Workers.
