English for Healthcare

English for Healthcare is an asynchronous course with 6 modules. Learners can work at their own pace to practice listening and speaking with healthcare topics that include: symptoms, vitals, people and places in a medical facility, equipment, and discharge from a medical facility. Learners will apply vocabulary and language structures to practical healthcare scenarios while honing their English pronunciation. This course is for learners currently at a B1 Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level who may or may not have prior experience in the healthcare industry.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to identify key terms and certain language structures to describe various areas of the healthcare industry. Clear pronunciation of words and phrases in sentences related to various areas of the healthcare industry will be taught. Finally, learners will be able to use key terms and language structures related to healthcare in written and spoken communication.

• Use key terms related to health symptoms in written and spoken communication.

Module 2: Vitals

• Recognize key English terms related to vitals.

• Identify appropriate language to explain vital signs in medical tables and graphs.

• Use key terms to discuss vital signs in tables and graphs for written and spoken communication.

Module 3: People

• Identify key English terms for people who work in healthcare.

• Clearly pronounce words related to people in healthcare.

• Use key terms related to people in healthcare in written and spoken communication.

Module 4: Places

• Identify the key English terms for places in a hospital.

• Ask for and give directions inside a hospital.

• Use key terms related to places in a hospital in written and spoken communication.

Module 5: Safety Practices and Procedures

• Identify key terms to describe safety practices and procedures used in healthcare.

• Recognize imperatives used in communicating safety standards in healthcare communications.

• Use appropriate imperatives to discuss safety standards in healthcare in written and spoken communication.

Module 6: Discharge

• Identify key terms related to discharging patients from a healthcare facility.

• Recognize transition words used to describe a process when discharging patients from a healthcare facility.

• Use transition words to describe a process when discharging patients in a healthcare facility.
