The weather is extremely hot this year. This summer was hotter than any other summer before. Not only South Korea, but the whole earth is struggling from the heat. Particularly Indochina Peninsula is suffering from a severe drought. Tonele Sap Lake, which can be seen even on a map of the whole continent of Asia, is drying up. Even though it is the rainy season, rain is not coming enough to relieve the drought. Cambodia is facing the worst drought in 50 years. It is so severe that even wild animals are unable to find water and are dying of thirst. The drought leads to famine and it is hard to imagine how difficult their lives are. Global Care sent a humanitarian assistance team to Battambang, Cambodia and supplied drinking and living water.

The Second Emergency Relief team of Ecuador supplied hygiene, medical supplies, and drinking water to twenty unofficial shelters. The team also set up portable toilets with Team&Team, which is a WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) specialized NGO. At the end of August, a third relief team will be sent and is planning to set up temporary shelters with support from the Community Chest of Korea and NamSeoul Church. Small earthquakes are still occurring. We are consistently giving hope to our fatigued neighbors in Ecuador.

It has been more than five years since the the Syrian civil war began. The lives of the refugees are unceasingly weary. Global Care is still running the 'Hope Clinic' and a mobile clinic for refugees in Lebanon. Starting this year, Global Care Lebanon expanded sanitation education and also increased the amount of projects for female refugees. Global Care Morocco, after running a successful tuberculosis project, recently started a U-health using maternal health project. Furthermore, we are steadily running community capacity empowerment project in northern Bangladesh and Battambang, Cambodia. Global Care Vietnam was able to renew a three-year work permit and plans to promote education, mobile clinics, and a project to increase the income in the northern area including Lao Cai. We are strengthening the communities of Haiti and the Philippines (which were affected by earthquakes and typhoons) through a Disaster Risk Reduction project. A branch office of the community health center in Gorka, Nepal, which collapsed due to the earthquakes, will be completed in this fall, despite the slow speed of construction. Two to three impoverished patients of Vietnam and Cambodia are recovering due to the monthly support from Inter-alia in local hospitals.

Global Care will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in next February. For the last 20 years, there were some flaws within Global Care but those years were filled with thankfulness and joy. Hence we are looking forward to 2017. A student sponsor wrote a book review after reading 'Story of Inji Club the warm-hearted plastic surgery surgeons'. When she visited the Global Care headquarters, she brought a school scholarship she received and the book review. Thinking of the Past 18 years in Global Care Vietnam

It has been already 18 years since Global Care officially started to work in Vietnam. It is no exaggeration to say that Global Care Vietnam began together with the history of Global Care. Due to the surgery project of congenital facial deformities in 1997 in Vietnam, Global Care was able to register as an NGO in Vietnam People's Aid Coordinating Committee (PACCOM) in 1999 and conduct a variety of projects. We conducted water purifier project of ecological household for residents who are using contaminated water plain area near Hong river, free mobile clinic project to reduce water borne diseases, connected children support project for 04

We conducted many projects over the years. The most valuable and significant decision of the past 18 years in Vietnam was moving from the plain area near Hong river where we worked about 10 years to alpine region in Lai Chau and Lao Cai Province. Vietnam started to attract foreign investment and modernized in earnest in 2007. Before that, cities in Vietnam excluding major cities needed external help. Since 2004, Global Care Vietnam was interested in the alpine region and started a project for minority students. Even though further efforts were needed to preceed the project due to the poor conditions, we could help students studying under difficult circumstances more. I am happy and satisfied with ongoing projects of alpine region because of the children with limpid eyes and honest face. Because children have the right to be loved by just their existence I would like to treat children with friendly service to limpid eyes, gentle face to honest face and warm affection to shy children.

Global Care Vietnam is conducting education, children connection and local development projects in Lai Chau and Lao Cai Province of the alpine region.

Emergency Drought Relief in Cambodia

After finishing DRR Projects in the Philippines

El Nino influenced Cambodia into extremely hot weather and little rain during the dry season (from November to April). Because there are no water supply plants in most parts of Cambodia, people collect and utilize rainwater from drinking water to agricultural water. Cambodians obtain 70 percent of water for living from an open well or by collecting rainwater.

Global Care Philippines began the DRR(Disaster Risk Reduction) project in mid-April and now is completing the project step by step. We held a brief business presentation which started with a meeting of stakeholders.

Also, a seminar about School DRR program training was held for School DRR Committee. ACCORD, the local NGO in partnership with Global Care, explained information about the disaster and the DRR project. Then there was a practice session about teaching DRR to students. Also, an emergency rescue training seminar was held for principals and school nurses of six schools in cooperation with Philippines' Ministry of Health and Welfare's cooperation. Certificates were given to the teachers who completed the seminar.

The Battambang Provincial government asked NGOs for a drought relief after realizing the limitation of governmental support. In an effort to bring relief, Global Care Cambodia conducted an emergency drought relief in the Battambang Province in collaboration with the provincial government.

Throughout June, Global Care Cambodia distributed 40L of drinking water per household for 4,850 households of 30 villages in 10 districts and on June 6th donated 10 items of 5,000L water tanks to the provincial government.

Each water tank was installed in 10 different regions in the Battambang Province; the provincial government is providing water for living to the installed water tanks.

Even though Cambodia is currently in the rainy season (from May to October), drought persists due to lack of rain. The water shortage is leading economically weak residents to purchasing drinking water. Please give the drought suffering Cambodian residents your concern and support and keep an eye on the work of Global Care.

After the seminar, each school (the six schools listed above) was visited in search for a space to build a health center. Also, the school health centers were repaired with plywood and various materials. After the repair is over, we plan to provide equipment such as beds and cabinets.

Starting in July 4th, we visited the schools with the campaign of Public Awareness Program for students, school committee, and local residents. Education materials used in the campaign were all translated into local language and were given out to every student. It was a valuable time for every participant learning to raise awareness on disaster and having evacuation training. We are expecting good results in upcoming projects.

Health System Restoration Project in the Quake-Stricken Area in Nepal

Pokharithok in Gorkha district was the epicenter of the heavy earthquakes that occurred on April 25th, 2015, and May 12th, 2015. To support the damaged region, Global Care Nepal is providing basic health services and reconstructing the health service center.

Global Care Nepal held 'Health Camp' with Asal Chhimekee(ACN), a local NGO in partnership with Global Care, from May 19th to May 23rd for Gorkha residents. 'Health Camp' provided primary healthcare service, basic health checkups and health education. The local doctors and nurses provided primary health care services including treatment, basic prescription of medicine, and connection to a secondary medical institution for local residents. For elementary students, we conducted eyesight test and basic hygiene education. Education about the usage of disposable childbirth kit, iron and calcium supplement was provided for pregnant women. To every local resident who visited, basic health checkups, a hygiene kit, vitamins, anthelmintic was provided.

Currently, a branch office of the community health center is under construction. It will be completed around August or November. There is no health center in Pokharithok in Gorkha district, so patients have to be transferred to distant local hospitals or referred to the different region's hospitals. When the construction is complete, about 3,205 people will be able to receive health care service benefits. To help Nepal be restored, please give lots of love and concern to Nepal that suffered the great earthquake.

News from Haiti

It is already August. The rainy season (from April to June) here in Haiti is over, and the hot season has begun. The number of Cholera patients usually sharply increases during this period, but fortunately, we had fewer patients than expected this year. It seems like the Cholera prevention project, which started in October 2014, worked well. So far, the 10-month long project implemented each year to improve living environments of La Gonave Island that includes Cholera prevention education and building clean public toilets has made a great progress so far. Global Care Haiti was able to continue the project this year, and this has allowed us to provide further Cholera prevention.

La Gonave Island is the largest island in Haiti, and its surface area is smaller than half of Korean Jeju Island's; there are about 120,000 citizens residing at La Gonave, although it is one of the poorest areas in Haiti. Due to the lack of governmental support, the Island is also considered "the forgotten Haiti". The residents are living without enough modern facilities like electricity and sewage. Because of inadequate hygiene environment, Cholera is highly common.

To support this local community, Global Care Haiti has been helping with building public toilets, purifying wells, training sanitation workers, and more since 2014. Approximately 22 local sanitation workers are currently serving each of their villages to pursue the same goal. The La Gonave medical center is almost finished. Upon completion, it will be a great help for women and children to receive the appropriate medical benefits they need.

No Days Off, Even During Ramadan

A Visit to Global Care Lebanon for Monitoring

Morocco, often mistaken as Monaco due to the similarity in name, is a country located at the end of northwestern Africa. Its principal religion is Islam. Recently, Global Care Morocco is very busy due to the visiting patients on weekends in Ramadan. Ramadan, which occurs during the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, is a month of fasting and purification. The Ramadan period is slightly different each year; it was from June 6 to July 5 this year.

During Ramadan, people pray/meditate and take a nap when the sun is out.

After the sun sets, they can eat food until the sun rises on the next day.

In Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, Global Care Lebanon is running a clinic for Syrian refugees and visiting refugees by providing a mobile clinic twice a month. Global Care Lebanon's Syrian Refugee Health Care Project started in 2013. Global Care Lebanon carried out the project as a humanitarian assistance project for approximately 2 years. Starting in 2015, Global Care is continuing the project as a KOICA Project.

Global Care Morocco was busy during the fasting period because of the variable lifestyles of the patients. Because of the change of lifestyle, patients do not to take their medicine on time or sometimes do not take their medicine at all, and some do not even receive a confirmation call.

Normally, patients do not have to fast during Ramadan and just need to fill in the fasting days within that year. However, if patients live with family, it is hard to ask them not to fast with their family. Instead, Global Care Morocco went to see patients reminding them to take their medicine on time. We also changed the notification time of Smart Pill Box for patients to be comfortable with their flexible schedule during Ramadan.

When we visit patients during this period, we often find them taking a nap. Even though we disturbed their rest, we could feel the sincere love from the patients. Most of the patients lose their jobs and get separated due to the infectious disease. Although they are not getting enough support from the government, everyone from Global Care Morocco is happy to see patients having a social life after their health recovery.

In early June, Eunseong Paek, Secretary General of Global Care, and I made a 5-days visit to Global Care Lebanon to monitor the branch.

The first place we visited was the clinic (open only on weekdays). The clinic runs different departments every day, and patients are required to make an appointment before visiting. Our visiting day happened to be the day for obstetrics and pediatrics treatment. Paul, a recently joined doctor, is famous for his punctilious treatment.

He is so popular that patients constantly make appointments. The clinic also holds a health education class once a week and runs care visit.

Apart from doctors, local staff members are doing their best in their places. As I saw the stably running clinic, I could see the hard effort put into it.

Our last monitoring schedule was visiting the mobile clinic on Saturday. The mobile clinic team consists of 15 members along with Country Director Dae-young Lee. The team visits four areas regularly. This time, it was Faida's turn.

Refugee Camp has poor conditioned medical facilities or none at all, so the mobile clinic is a huge help to refugees. On that day, total 45 patients were treated by the mobile clinic.

After a visit to the clinic, we had a chance to observe the actual working field in humanitarian assistance by visiting the refugee camp. It was time for not only to monitor Global Care Lebanon's project but also to know about the actual life of Syrian refugees. Seoul Friendship Fair 2016

"Please help to restore Syrian Refugee's everyday life!"

Global Care has participated in the Seoul Friendship Fair 2016. We campaigned on the theme of "Please help to restore Syrian Refugee's everyday life!" at Seoul Plaza last May 7th and 8th. Lebanon is the largest host country of refugees per citizen, and the one million Syrian refugees are living there are considered as the poor. Currently, Syrian refugees in Lebanon are not in the condition to get medical care because of the high medical expenses. To help those in need, Global Care started Lebanon's Syrian Refugee Health Care Project (clinic, health education, and mobile clinic) in 2013. This campaign's purpose is to advocate the situation of Syrian refugees and Global Care's activity and to fund-raise operating expenses for the clinic.

The participants of the fair were to solve 3 quizzes about refugees, then to send hope to refugees by drawing or writing their support on a heart shaped blank puzzle. Also, cards about Syrian refugees and Ecuador's Great Earthquake that happened last April were given out to people who visited the fair to advocate the difficulties around the world.

The puzzle activity's significance was that it was familyfriendly and was able to send the bright message of hope to Syrian refugees with whole family members. Staff members were able to keep up thanks to the people who asked about setting up Syrian refugees' photos with care, and who funded when just passing by. Out of all participants, the most memorable people were a married Syrian couple. The couple thanked Global Care for caring for Syrian refugees and encouraged constant assistance. Please remember Syrian refugees who are still going through a great struggle, and be a helping hand to those in need.

Every Child HAHAHA Season 3; the first half results report

On July 2013, Every Child HAHAHA started. It has been 3 full years since the starting point that teachers in community child care center and each child’s family had high expectations and thrills. In season 1, we focused to settle our project and in season 2, we were able to have a wider variety of programs due to the fund from ‘NH NongHyup Life’. To bring new changes to season 3, we maintained a breathless pace. We could have come up here without tiredness due to the attention and love of sponsors and lots of cooperation. We really appreciate the support and would like to report the first half results of season 3, 2016.

In season 3, we targeted the total of 25 centers for 713 children that consist of 15 centers in Geumcheon-gu, 10 centers in Guro-gu.

Medical checkups of health center

Visiting checkups

From February to March we went to visit and gave medical checkups to 362 children of 16 community child care centers. Medical professionals visited each center and checked children’s conditions based on health screening results. We talked with the children 1:1 and checked irregular symptoms of patients’ condition. It was valuable time for children to look back their health condition and to get a significant guidance for community child care center.

Children’s follow-up measures

After checkups, we took follow-up measures. From February to May, we rechecked and took 18 children’s urine, blood test and radiography and ultrasound test for four months.

Fortunately there was no child who had serious diseases.

However, there were a lot of children who had high liver protein level and cholesterol count requiring dietary management and exercise. We discussed about the changes needed for the children with community child care centers and some of the children had received professional nutrition consultation.

The first program was medical checkups in health center. In January, we took blood, urine, anthropometry, and radiation graphic inspection of the 188 newly registered children. Based on those tests, we were able to determine the children’s overall health status and the presence or absence of a disease and parents were able to take care for their children’s health more actively.

Education of before and after menstruation

We educated female teenagers to manage healthcare themselves through medical support as well as education of before and after menstruation. Girls from single parent family, raised by grandparents or dual-income family did not learn how to deal with menstruation. To solve this problem, we educated females who recently had their first period to wear sanitary pads properly. In addition, we informed the dangers of sex to female teenagers who began menstruation and instructed the use of condom. Rather than difficult theories, we made it easier for them to understand by teaching practical knowledges and practices. Total of 13 centers for 96 female teenagers participated and had high satisfaction.

In the second half of 2016, we are planning to provide medical support, health, hygiene education, and art therapy program. We are not going to settle for the project and achievements but will work harder for healthy growth of children.

Art therapy program will be operated by ‘Our HAHAHA’ team which consists of active psychotherapy experts and it will be operated in 10 sessions from September to help children from community child care center psychologically and mentally.

While participating in Every Child HAHAHA Season 3, I was able to pay attention and focus on children’s healthcare.

In particular, an education like ‘before and after menstruation’ program was necessary but children did not have a proper chance to learn. But thanks to Every Child HaHaHa Project, children were able to acquire the right knowledge to deal with the changes of period of growth. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in a good project.

With the support from Global Care for many years, I actually feel that children’s health is getting better. Children also remember teachers of Global Care and welcomed them.

In addition, due to the participation of community child care center workers in the training of PTSD counselor, the training enhanced capacity as a social worker. Also, it was my pleasure to participate in a training which was about practical for children with diverse backgrounds and stress relief techniques. I hope I can work with Global Care for a long time and I would like to support Global Care more!!!

Thank you, Global Care, for your interest in medical support in Geumcheon-Gu community child care center. It has been already three years that Global Care has grown along with children in Geumchoen-Gu community child care center.

Looking back on the past three years with supportive Global Care for children grown in harsh environment such as absence of parents, it was really valuable time. Our children were able to grow up because Global Care considered our center’s situation and sent a vehicle and teachers for health center checkup. Also dental care, Chinese medicine, modification of body type, sex education, and counseling were needed and useful for children.

When I went to the health center for the first time, I made lots of mistakes because I was anxious and nervous.

However, for the second time, I was able to communicate with children and focus on the education. I was proud of myself because they focused on the education and followed really well.

At first I was worried and nervous but when children participated enthusiastically, I felt it was meaningful and pleasant time. I was interested in volunteer service of education before so it was valuable time for me.

Hello. I am Jungeun Choi, and this is my 2nd year to work on the medical expense project and administration. While working in Vietnam last year, I felt happiness that was unable to find in the past 10 career years of my career. As such, I extended my time to work here for another year. Although my work is a small affair, I believe that it can be a miracle for someone. I will spend rest of my working period to share love before going back home. Thank you.

Introducing Global Care’s Overseas Volunteers and Interns!

This year, there are seven World Friends NGO volunteers, an expert volunteer, and three KOICA ODA interns in Global Care. We would like to introduce those people who are working hard in the overseas branches and the headquarters. In this newsletter, we will introduce six volunteers and interns.

Hi! Recently, I was sent to the Global Care Morocco. As of the end of February, I am going to be here for 1 year. Since I lived in and traveled to several countries when I was young, I got interested in the lives of people in other countries. I wanted to experience a variety of areas as a college student, so I got interested in the projects in Morocco after deciding to go for a short-term volunteer service. On the ground, they are conducting a project of m-health system to care TB patients. At first, I was worried that my major, which is landscape architecture, would not be helpful to the project. But I dismissed the idea of working related to my major, and now I want to pursue new areas. In addition, I believed that there could be correlation in any field and now I am experiencing that it is right. Using what I learned in my major, I am thinking and trying to work on patients’ living environment, development of areas where the poor people live, and design. After having adjusted to my life here, it feels like time flies. I am always looking forward to experiencing new environments.

Hello! My name is Seoyeun Lee, and I was sent to Global Care’s Morocco in March 2016. Before being sent, I had worked in the headquarters of Global Care for two years in South Korea. While working in the headquarters, I wanted to learn more about the tasks in the field, so I applied to be a volunteer of KCOC and was dispatched to the Moroccan branch. I was unfamiliar with the tasks in the field, and there were a lot of things that I needed to learn. I am trying my best to adapt myself to the environment. Global Care Morocco continues to care for TB patients to help them to keep taking medicines steadily to their recovery. A few days ago, the local staff and others all were happy about news of fully recovered patients who were taken care of in 2014.

I will continue to work even harder to be a person who can help others.

Hi! I am Taehee Lee, and I am working as a volunteer in Global Care’s Cambodia. Throughout college, I had a dream to volunteer, just once, in a foreign country. So I pursued my dream to achieve it, but I failed repeatedly. I took an international development cooperation class by chance when I was in college. That was my first step toward gaining knowledge about international development. The course allowed me to learn that international development projects are not so easy and simple, and that they require countless processes and consideration of variables. I recognized volunteering as a long-term service rather than short-term service and jumping into the field of development cooperation projects. As a result of the drinking water sanitation projects in Cambodia, I feel really great about meeting and interacting directly with local residents in the field. As such, I am proud that I gave effort to provide cleaner environment of the drinking water for local residents.

Hi. I am Dahee Kim, and I am working in the international program team of Global Care as an intern of KOICA ODA. While I was in college, I developed a desire to pursue international development, and luckily I started to work in Global Care right after my graduation. Now I am in charge of Global Care's online public relation, opening online donation boxes and administrative work of international projects. It has already been 6 months in Global Care. Looking back, I learned many things from good teachers. I am just happy and grateful that I am doing what I have always dreamed. I will try to be a positive and useful person for the rest of my time in Global Care.

I am Sangwon Lee, and I am working in the headquarters of Global Care as an intern of KOICA ODA. Since I had lived in several countries, I experienced and learned empirical characteristics of various social phenomena and cultural diversity including poverty, structure of economic inequality and solutions. GLOBALCARE NEWS #1 Humanitarian Assistance Ecuador Earthquake Emergency Relief After grasping the situation in Manta, Ecuador, Global Care has dispatched 1st and 2nd rounds of Emergency Relief. During the 1st Emergency Relief, Global Care distributed food and WASH kits to 121 households. During the 2nd Emergency Relief, bucket-tap and medical kits were distributed to 1,551 households. Also, in cooperation with Team&Team (WASH specialized NGO), Global Care supported enhancing the hygienic environment.

Continuation of "Nepal Tansen Children's Library Education Support Project" Samsung Dream Scholarship Foundation's 2015 Global Overseas Education Support Program was prolonged and is now able to do various programs stably apart from basic education programs. At the start of a reading program, children used to look at pictures only. But now the children read books till the end and express their thoughts in their own words. Older children are reading books to the younger ones who cannot read yet. The library is also running English classes, knitting classes, a field trip, etc. The goal for library's classes is to help the children to be mentally and physically healthy by providing classes for children to help them catch up in school, to let them have various experiences, and to help them learn useful technical training. Cambodia Emergency Drought Relief Global Care Cambodia distributed 40L, enough water for one household for 4 days, of drinking water per household to 4,850 households throughout Batttambang Province. Also, 10 items of 5,000L water tanks were donated to the provincial government. The provincial government is providing water for living to the installed water tanks.

Hello. I am Jinyoung Park, a newly joined international project team member of Global Care. I became associated with Global Care last year as a volunteer in the Global Care Philippines. I am glad to work in the headquarters of Global Care. When I was in my early twenties, I did not know anything about the field of international development cooperation, and I just wanted to work in an NGO because it was just interesting.

After that I gradually wanted to learn more about this field. While I received field experience in Global Care, I was able to learn more than I expected to. Although one year was not enough to see the dramatic changes of the people’s quality of life, I personally was able to understand their culture and life, and it was a great experience for me to be a part of their lives. Based on the understanding I gained in the field from Global Care, I will try to pay attention to the work of the field. Even though my tasks would be minor and insignificant, I will always do my best to develop myself. I ask you to support me in my development and have a positive impact on Global Care. Thank you.

Hello. I am Byungkwon Oh, and I am starting a new maternal health project in Global Care Morocco as a project manager. Over the past five years, I served as an information and communication company commander using videoconference and satellite equipment. After that, I went to graduate school for public health and took a class on international development cooperation. Through the course, I had a desire to help people in need in the future when I got to know poor people who were suffered from the disease. After I was discharged, I had a chance to go to monitor the Emergency Relief of the Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. When I was interviewing people, I met an aged woman who was living in a shantytown. She used the first aid kit provided by Global Care to care her 5-year-old grandson. He had been injured by shrapnel due to the typhoon. I felt that it was worthwhile when I saw her tears and appreciation to us. I will try my best to carry out your support and love through Global Care to our global alienated neighbors. Thank you for supporting and paying attention to our projects.
