GIRL POWER When Miuccia Prada makes a statement, the world takes notice. Her message for this spring/summer was feminine through and through, though with not a frill in sight. The designer asked six illustrators and muralists to interpret themes of femininity and power and these faces were transposed on to coats, dresses and skirts. The strong, graphic collection features bold colours, jewelled bras over dresses and little black dresses with colourful sequined rainbows, and surely sets the tone for women everywhere this season. df A誰shti, 71 El-Moutrane Street, Beirut Central District, +961 (0)1 991111 ext 130, prada.com

DARK ARTS When Marc Jacobs presented his fnal collection for Louis Vuitton after 16 years with the fashion house, he brought together all of his most spectacular past set pieces, reimagined in lacquered black, to create a giant interactive catwalk. Despite the darkness, the mood was ferce rather than funereal. Model of the moment Edie Campbell opened the show for a collection that mixed gothic opulence with punk attitude. Elegant jetblack pieces with glittering and feathered embellishments were mixed with stonewashed denim and peek-a-boo chifon. Models strutted across the foor, which was covered in luxuriant navy lambskin, like macabre Vegas showgirls with fantastical feather headdresses and angular black eyebrows. If nothing else, the show proves that Jacobs, like the colour black, will never go out of style. ib Louis Vuitton, Beirut Souks, Beirut Central District, +961 (0)1 966810, louisvuitton.com * for map go to pages 91 & 102 Save up to 8% by shopping tax free, see page 117

GOOD SPORT Embracing a theme which became one of the key ideas of the season, Salvatore Ferragamo’s latest menswear collection strikes a neat balance between sporting infuences and sharp tailoring. Creative director Massimiliano Giornetti was inspired, he says, by the energy of sporting stars, and marries this energy with the label’s traditional tailored lines. Sweaters and jackets are emblazoned with huge numbers and the term three-piece suit takes on a new meaning, with jacket, trousers and fne-knit sweater all perfectly co-ordinated. This is a refned take on what is sure to be a lasting trend. hl Salvatore Ferragamo, 52 Bank Street, Beirut Central District, +961 (0)1 976137, salvatoreferragamo.com

Lebanese designers’ focus on high-end, hand-crafted pieces is turning the country into a world-class hub for glamorous bespoke fashion, says Stephen Doig

LEBANON’S COUTURE CLUB

Conjure up an image of traditional haute couture and you’ll more than likely think of a lofty Paris atelier and a grand French house. But more and more pockets of couture are beginning to fnd a home outside the confnes of place Vendôme and rue Cambon. In Lebanon, the twin factors of culture and location are key; the country has a rich craft history and an aesthetic that veers towards lavish beadwork and embroidery – an integral part of couture. Lebanon is perfectly placed to act as a hub for Middle Eastern couture clients, and even for Chinese customers who don’t want to travel all the way to Paris. Wide exposure on red carpets and at awards ceremonies has further cemented the reputations of the country’s designers, and the Paris Haute Couture Week schedule is increasingly flling up with Lebanese names. Bouchra Jarrar, Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad are all making their presence felt on an international stage thanks to their

mastery of craft, their detailed embroidery and embellishment, and their opulent, lavish gowns – ideal for any event on the social calendar from Viennese balls to polo matches in Dubai. The term ‘couture’ can only be ofcially applied to designers invited to show in Paris Haute Couture Week by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, but many Lebanese designers who don’t show as part of the Couture Week schedule are no less accomplished than those who do. Designers such as Basil Soda, Abed Mahfouz, Reem Acra, Jean Fares, Georges Hobeika and Mireille Dagher all create bespoke fashion pieces. For Murad, location is key. ‘I think the geographic location of Lebanon on the Mediterranean Sea helps the Lebanese

designer to travel abroad and present their collections all over the world,’ he has told CNN. ‘I have always loved to work in the world of luxury and design as my country is well known for its natural beauty. That expertise made me fall into the world of haute couture.’ And he has landed very well; alongside ready-to-wear, the designer produces a bespoke line and a bespoke bridal line, basing himself between Paris and Lebanon. Alongside the A-list names such as Jennifer Lopez and Kristen Stewart that turn to him for red carpet looks with impact, he has built up a roster of regular clients such as Qatari women and Brunei royals. It’s a similar story at Reem Acra, who has reinvented bridal wear for the 21st century.

After relocating from Beirut to New York, Acra launched a range of bridal dresses in 1997 that combined a typically Lebanese sense of lavishness and opulent style with New York sophistication. Lebanon is perfectly placed to act as a hub for Middle Eastern and Chinese couture clients detailing and sleek lines that is a million miles away from the traditional connotations of gold-gilt rococo excess that a couture salon might conjure up. Soda, who has studied architecture as well as fashion, founded his label in 2000 as a brand focusing solely on bespoke pieces, before his ready-to-wear line was launched a decade later. His pieces are decorative and opulent; tassels, fringing, elaborate embroidery, fowing goddess dresses and a rich colour palette focus on a sense of high-octane glamour, and Marion Cotillard,

Emily Blunt and Katy Perry turn to Soda for their red-carpet looks. Such A-list clients prove yet again that Lebanon’s designers can establish a worldclass alternative to the refned Paris salons that are the pinnacle of haute couture bouchrajarrar.com, eliesaab.com, zuhairmurad.com, basilsoda.com, abedmahfouz, jeanfarescouture.com, reemacra.com, georgeshobeika.com, mireilledagher.com

Lebanese designers are proving their expertise in accessories, from traditional, minimalist designs to avantgarde pieces inspired by pop art. Sally McIlhone reports

THE FINISHING TOUCHES Lebanese designers are producing beautifully made, eclectic handbags, iPad covers, belts, small leather goods and shoes – and proving that the accessories industry is a vital part of the thriving Lebanese fashion scene. Sarah’s Bag specialises in beaded and embroidered handbags that range from the traditional to the avant garde; the Clutch Me Calligraphy bag is adorned with Arabic script in gold beadwork, while the Eggzy Popeye clutch depicts a hand-stitched pop art-style eye on a red and white spotted background. ‘We combine traditional techniques of beading, embroidery and crocheting with all kinds of materials, from leather to fuorescent fabric and canvas. It’s this contrast of old and new that has become a signature of Sarah’s Bag,’ says founder Sarah Beydoun. ‘Some of our most popular bags over the years have been based on this concept, such as our clutch printed with a picture of [famous Egyptian singer] Umm Kulthum reinvented in an Andy Warhol palette.’ 125

Lebanese designers are gaining exposure on the world stage thanks to a boom in international interest

Formed in 2000, the company combines Beydoun’s love of eye-catching, witty fashion with her desire to help rehabilitate disadvantaged Lebanese women. ‘We work with over 100 women today and our collections are designed to showcase their skills and exquisite handwork. This is what Sarah’s Bag is all about.’ Sarah’s Bag is a rare gem – a fashion brand with a conscience and a sense of humour. Previous designs have been inspired by Lebanese street food and grafti. ‘It’s the diversity and how creative we can be that makes this so exciting. The possibilities are endless!’ says Beydoun. Well-known Lebanese accessories brand Johnny Farah’s designs are much more minimalist. The label, which has been trading since the 1970s, showcases the natural beauty of vegetable-tanned leather. Founder and head designer Johnny Farah now produces two bag lines – his main line and the JF 37 37 line of hand-made bags crafted in Beirut. He has

also diversifed into producing leather slippers and fat lace-up shoes. ‘Johnny Farah leather accessories are known to be architectural and functional yet fashionably discrete,’ says the brand’s namesake. The brand’s style is particularly distinctive, he adds. ‘People recognise a Johnny Farah bag even without having seen the brand name.’

66 | F E AT U R E S

Farah believes that it is not just his decisions to expand into designing tech bags and to collaborate on a special collection with Lebanese designer Ranya Sarakbi that have caused a boom in international interest in the label’s products. ‘Consumers have changed their attitudes through the years, and are not solely buying products released by the popular luxury brands,’ he explains, ‘They are transitioning away from this trend to feel unique and diferent.’ This attitude change refects increased interest in Lebanese accessory design generally, and is great news for Lebanese brands who have worked hard to establish a following in their home country and are now gaining exposure on the world stage. Johnny Farah is now extensively stocked in the US and Sarah’s Bag is gaining new stockists in Europe and the Far East. C By Cynthia is the latest Lebanese designer to enchant international travellers who visit Beirut. Cynthia Bouchakjian began Above (from top): the Johnny Farah workshop and Babuj shoes

by making accessories for herself and her friends before word spread further afeld. Soon Bouchakjian expanded to opening her own store on Mar Maroun Street. Her collections now include fringed leather bags in olive and orange tones and two-tone pythonskin shoulder bags. For Bouchakjian, it’s the materials that make accessories design so enjoyable. ‘I love the softness and the sound of the python skin, the scales of the crocodile and the smell of the vintage leather,’ she explains.

68 | F E AT U R E S

Beautifully made bags, belts, leather goods and shoes prove that accessories are a vital part of the thriving Lebanese fashion scene Above: a colourful collection of C By Cynthia handbags

‘Leather is my passion, and with the help of my husband, who is also a big collector of skins, my passion turned into a real business.’ Bouchakjian is excited about joining the likes of Johnny Farah and Sarah’s Bag as one of the torchbearers of Lebanese design and she attributes the success of her contemporaries to the ambition of her generation of designers. ‘It is the passion that is thriving behind every Lebanese mind. Excellent work and craftsmanship are two main qualities in Lebanon,’ she says. ‘And when we design, we design for the world.’ sarahsbag.com, johnnyfarah.com, cbycynthia.com

CENTURIES OF STYLE 122

Beirut’s souks have been part of the city’s culture for thousands of years and their 21st-century incarnation is more opulent and exciting than ever, as Charlie Neidpath discovers Above: Gold Souk passageway

S H O P | 71

Traditional souks are winding, bustling passageways, warrens of riches full of ornate stalls ofering fabric, spices, sweet treats, jewellery and craft, all waiting to be discovered, like treasure. So it’s something of a shock to arrive at the Beirut Souks in the thriving Central District of the Lebanese capital and fnd a solid architectural edifce of gleaming

steel and sandstone, with arched corridors as imposing as a cathedral, lavish gardens, striking contemporary artwork and some of the world’s most super-luxurious designers. This is a thoroughly 21st-century rendering of souks for the international luxury traveller. Souks have been an integral part of Beirut culture and a centre for trade and industry for

thousands of years. Islamic and Byzantine culture and architecture were a strong infuence on the original Beirut souks, with mosaic foors once covering the public spaces, discovered in an extensive excavation in the 1990s. From the 17th century onwards, the souks became a centre for jewellery, with gold and silver merchants ofering opulent ranges. Many of the styles went on to infuence Lebanon’s modern jewellery aesthetic – Lebanese designers still use symbols and motifs that are part of a jewellery heritage passed down through generations. This history was the subject of an exhibition last year, The Jewellery Souks Golden Years. And the current years are just as golden. The souks have been transformed into a major modern shopping destination by Solidere,

the company charged with the redevelopment of Beirut city centre. The traditional Souq al-Tawileh, Souq al-Jamil and Souq al-Franj, souks which ofered jewellery, clothing, food and fowers, have been re-interpreted by internationally renowned architects such as Rafael Moneo, Zaha Hadid and Kevin Dash.

The results are stunning: a series of monolithic, modern structures that nod to the past and the rich heritage of the souks. Each street, alleyway and arcade is named after its original counterpart, with the grid of the layout mimicking the traditional one. Today, the extensive pedestrian area

in softest sandstone shades that evoke the landscape of the Arab desert is a haven of modernity and luxury. The public spaces are often used for contemporary art, so a shopping expedition can take a cultural turn as you wander the streets and arcades. The souks have attracted global attention for Belgian artist Arne Quinze’s installation The Visitor, an arresting red structure of tangled planks that clamber towards the sky, installed in 2009. The souks have also acted as a showcase for up-and-coming Lebanese artists.

Lebanon’s rise as a fashion hub means that the Beirut Souks are a haven for style enthusiasts. Saint Laurent, Chloé, Balenciaga, Burberry and Bottega Veneta are among those who have made a home in the souks and their opulent womenswear is ideal for Beirut’s glamorous nightlife. And, as the sun sets, a cocktail in The Garden, an elegant outdoor space in the Gold Souk, will lend a further touch of indulgence to your 21st-century souk experience beirutsouks.com.lb

Table Talk Lebanon’s fnest restaurants take inspiration from a range of international cuisines, serving authentic-tasting dishes in suitably spectacular environments. Verity Hogan suggests a selection of the very best

Lebanon’s dining scene is one of the world’s most diverse; alongside local restaurants specialising in traditional Lebanese cuisine, there are a number of establishments that ofer more international fare. Typical Lebanese cuisine also embraces international infuences, combining European favours and eastern spices to create dishes that are broadly Arabic in style but with a western edge. The Ottoman Empire’s rule and later French presence have also both left their mark on Lebanon’s cuisine. Today, international restaurants are an important part of Lebanon’s dining culture. Cuisines that have historically been embraced by Lebanon’s citizens, including French and Italian, now have restaurants dedicated to them, while newer infuences from America and the uK also have a place in this eclectic range. This mix of dining styles, coupled with luxuriously appointed interiors, has resulted in an array of restaurants catering to a cosmopolitan crowd of discerning diners. globalblue.com

Day Trip: Baalbek

‘one of the most celebrated sites in roman history, Baalbek is breathtakingly haunting to behold in person. the area has been a human settlement for some 9,000 years, though most of the structures still standing relate to when it was called Heliopolis in greco-roman times. It’s one of the few places you really get a sense Save up to 8% by shopping tax free, see page 117

of the scope and beauty of ancient architecture, especially if you’re lucky enough to be the only visitors of the day, as we were. An interesting fact: some of the columns that were created for Baalbek’s impressive temples ended up in Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia, another of our favourite cultural sites.’

PHOTOs: Emma CHEEvErs

Baalbek, located only a few hours from Beirut, is a Unesco world Heritage Site and one of the world’s most impressive sets of ancient remains. Emma Cheevers, SHoP’s editor-in-chief, explains why it is well worth a trip

S H O P | 87

How to get tHere Many local companies ofer day tours from Beirut. Be sure to schedule a visit to the neighbouring quarry to see where the rocks used to build the temples were sourced. the only other transport options from Beirut to Baalbek are minibuses and taxi services from the Cola transport hub. Both stop in Baalbek near the Palmyra hotel. the journey takes approximately two hours.

MY BeIrut: SAmAR YOuSSEf Journalist and blogger Samar Youssef’s lifestyle and fashion blog une Libanaise à Paris, started four years ago, now has an international audience and she covers the major fashion weeks as well as convincing major designers to open up their studios for spontaneous interviews. She takes Hannah Lewis on a tour of Beirut, the capital of her home country

‘The guesthouse and castle Hotel Albergo is a second home for chic travellers. Staying here will help you understand why Beirut is known as the Paris of the middle East. ‘Karen Chekerdjian’s credo is contemporary objects made using ancestral methods. Her store opened at the end of 2010 in a promising neighbourhood in the Port of Beirut district. She makes nearly everything there: furniture, objects, home accessories, even honey and olive oil – she works with local artisans. Her table décor is very innovative.

‘I like Tawlet for its selection of good products and traditional Lebanese plates that I miss when I’m in Paris. This restaurant makes me feel like I’m eating at the homes of grandmothers from every region of Lebanon. ‘Gemmayze is the neighbourhood with the most happening Beirut nightlife. You can party until morning, as the experience is exceptional. The ambiance is festive, positive and full of drinks, with endless bars and restaurants. The El Gardel bar is well known for its tango nights. Torino Express is tiny but the ambiance is always good. Le Georges is a great

fashion. And the selection is very sharp. It’s always been the luxury concept store of Lebanon, and after a shopping trip you can have lunch at its restaurant before heading to the spa for a manicure or hairstyle! ‘At Madame Rêve accessories become fnery and bring the fnal touch to the most banal of outfts. In a boutique shaped in a circular arc that is as impressive as the pieces on display, Lina Chammaa and Hala mouzannar design necklaces, bracelets and evening bags from vintage pieces, charms and marvels found in attics. Each piece is unique and tells a story. ‘Maison Rabih Kayrouz dresses women for daily life. His minimalist readyto-wear line uses artisanal techniques. Rabih Kayrouz is the image of renewal for Oriental fashion. His knit dresses last for ages, they make you want to buy and wear them without any specifc occasion in mind. His clothing is always forward-thinking, and his boutique is a timeless, no-frills wardrobe.’

restaurant to start the evening – don’t hesitate to try the local Almaza beer. ‘Café Rawda in the manara area is the place to go for hookah amateurs. The café ofers a unique space on the waterfront, overlooking the sea, that attracts people from various communities and social circles. This place is completely, totally one of a kind. ‘Varouj has the best family-style Armenian cuisine in the Borj Hammoud neighbourhood. Varouj is on a small street and the dining area is minuscule. On the menu are Armenian specialities like chicken liver sautéed or baked in the oven, pasterma (dried beef and spices), soudjouk (spicy sausages), and even frog’s legs. As you have no doubt guessed, given their capacity it is strongly recommended to reserve before going. ‘The National Museum of Beirut is the only real museum in Lebanon. Everything in it comes from archeological excavations. The vestiges from the Phoenician and Roman eras are the main attractions. The little gift shop is worth visiting as there aren’t any others in Beirut. ‘The bookstore you should not miss is Antoine. There are several around the city where you can fnd absolutely everything! The booksellers at Antoine can always dig up whatever you’re looking for, from the most rare and ancient art books to the latest bestsellers in Arabic, french or English. ‘At Aïshti * p.100, the style bar is set very high, whether it’s the mannequins, the customers or the saleswomen in this temple of
