Germany’s precision engineering is world-renowned. ot so long ago, recalls Léonard Pictet, German watchmakers didn’t engrave Made in Germany on their dials. But that has changed. ‘German watches fit into that broader tradition of quality in German engineering,’ says Pictet, UK and Switzerland brand manager of A Lange & Söhne. ‘I think, as understanding of what makes for quality in a watch has grown, there’s been a pride in doing so, as there has been, say, behind the German car industry.’ Indeed, just as anyone interested in cars will be familiar with BMW, Volkswagen, MercedesBenz and Porsche, it’s increasingly likely that high-end watch aficionados will recognise names such as A Lange & Söhne, Nomos, Junghans, Glashütte Original, Tutima, Sinn, Stowa, Montblanc and Moritz Grossmann. And, while Porsche Design timepieces are made in Switzerland, the company is known as the maker of several modern classic watches. Such companies run the gamut from the historical to the relatively new. A Lange & Söhne was established in Dresden in 1845 and Junghans was founded in 1861, while Moritz Grossmann was launched in 2008. This range is a sign of the German watch industry’s continued resurgence; Sinn was established in 1961, Nomos in 1990 and Glashütte Original in 1994. Glashütte, a small town about an hour’s drive from Dresden, from which the latter company takes its name, has been at the centre of German watchmaking since the mid 19th century. ‘People tend to think of Switzerland as dominating the watch industry now, but that wasn’t the case 100 years ago,’ says Pictet. ‘Back then, Germany was known for making good watches, as were the UK and the US. For Germany, the course of history and a pause in manufacturing over the 20th century saw the industry drift down different paths. Latterly there’s been something of a rebirth.’ Both A Lange & Söhne and Glashütte Original offer a distinctive look: classical, but without the fussiness that sometimes characterises classical Swiss watches; not as slim as a Swiss equivalent, perhaps, but with a more robust feeling. ‘There is definitely a difference between Swiss and German watches, in the Above (from left): components of the A Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Moon Phase timepiece; Glashütte Original PanoMatic Luna watch

movement, for example – German makers make no compromise on precision,’ says Pictet. He explains how A Lange & Söhne watches are assembled twice. The first assembly is followed by any necessary adjustments, disassembly, repolishing and then a second assembly. The company’s new escapement system – the heart of a mechanical watch’s time-keeping regularity – has been designed to minimise the impact of friction between its parts and the surrounding air. ‘That’s just the German way of thinking,’ laughs Pictet. More obvious is the aesthetic distinctiveness of German watches: streamlined, simple, minimalist, the visual representation of that disciplined precision – and, of course, within the German design tradition defined by the hugely influential Bauhaus school of the 1920s. Nomos watches, with their plain dials and graphic displays, are direct expressions of this look. Some of the most striking Junghans designs are by the late architect Max Bill, a student of the Bauhaus, though he was actually Swiss. MeisterSinger, another young German brand, established in 2001, takes the idea of the graphic representation of time further still: it’s known for its one-handed watches, which allow wearers to find a more relaxed, less dependent relationship with the time. Small wonder that German watch manufacturers no longer see themselves as playing second fiddle to the Swiss. ‘It wasn’t that long ago that there was this huge emphasis on quality watches being Swiss-made. what everyone thought of as a good watch,’ says Christine Hutter, CEO of Moritz Grossmann, the company named after Karl Moritz Grossmann, who in 1878 founded the Deutsche Uhrmacherschule Glashütte, an esteemed German watchmaking school. According to Hutter, Swiss superiority was no more than an assumption. ‘Over the past few decades bigger German watch brands have done a good job at putting German manufacturing back on the map,’ she says. ‘And advances in manufacturing are showing that an industry that was very strong can be revived again.’ Hutter’s own company helps prove the point. Although relatively recently established, Moritz Grossmann has already launched a number of world firsts of the sort usually produced by much longer-established watchmakers. Examples include a movement that can be wound by twisting the strap, and a tourbillon with a stop-seconds mechanism that employs a tiny brush made of human

As is the case with many other German makers, for the remainder the company relies on suppliers in Switzerland. Hutter says that ‘unfortunately, it’s not a realistic prospect’ for alternative manufacturers to set up businesses in Germany, because some of the parts are just too specialised for the market to absorb more than one source. But she’s ever hopeful – perhaps with good reason. Karl Moritz Grossmann’s seminal watchmaking book remains among the guiding philosophies for many German watchmakers in the 21st century.
