Standing Out

When Nellie Kamras founded Stand Studio in 2014, she had spotted a gap in a market she knew extremely well. Having worked in her father’s leather shop in Stockholm throughout her teenage years, she had noticed a lack of fashion-forward leather pieces at accessible price points. Over the past six years the brand has garnered an extensive following across Scandinavia and is also favoured by international celebrities such as Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner. Alongside statement leather pieces, the brand pushes boundaries Save up to 20% by shopping tax free, see page 52

with innovative fabrics, including ranges made from faux fur, wool, vegan leather and sustainable alternatives such as a new material crafted from pineapple leaves. The brand’s mixture of minimalist Swedish shapes and willingness to play with pattern and colour means each piece makes a wardrobe statement that is sure to last. Towards the end of 2019 H&M’s Sergels Torg flagship store underwent a renovation: the updated store has been designed to provide a new shopping experience for customers. Here you can shop a curated edit from the brand’s latest collections, which are presented against the backdrop of a neutral decor peppered with plenty of plants. mindful behaviour. In addition, the H&M Beauty Bar offers hair, nail and make-up treatments. The Swedish brand is forever rethinking the ways in which it can provide its customers across the world with exciting new retail experiences: this latest approach doesn’t disappoint. GOOD SPORT Pelle P revolves around active living. The Swedish brand, founded by the daughter of athlete and boat designer Pelle Petterson, creates technical clothing that can be worn for sailing and skiing – and is equally at home on the golf course. The brand’s collections are based around design, function and quality, and this season’s collection is a testimony to these three principles. Besides sportswear it spans more casual pieces, including linen shirts, light knits and hooded sweatshirts. This year the brand continues its collaboration with Ocean Crusader, a charity that works to clean up the oceans: together the two organisations set out to raise awareness and help protect marine life. Visit the Pelle P store on Drottninggatan, which celebrates its first anniversary this summer, to find out more about this initiative and to shop the current collection. This season, the Filippa K brand continues to do what it does best: timeless designs of quality that are defined by a pared-back aesthetic and are made to last. The womenswear mainline collection focuses on tailoring, with silhouettes that are fitted at the waist; long, simple dresses suggest elegant ease. Hues of mint, sage, and lilac offer a gentle, fresh counterbalance to neutrals. Filippa K also returns with its Soft Sport collection, which not only works as stylish activewear but is also a comfortable travel option, with its fine, hooded knits, soft T-shirts and light outerwear. FLYING COLOURS Founded in 1951, Marimekko first started out making patterned, colourful dresses for women – the brand name means Mari’s dress in Finnish. A bold contrast to the fashion of times, these dresses gave Marimekko its reputation for being bold and liberating. Almost 70 years later, dresses remain a staple for the Finnish brand, as do print designs and the use of vibrant colour. Nowhere is this more evident than in this season’s collection, which features dresses adorned with the brand’s distinctive floralinspired motifs. Pair one of these joyous designs with a Marimekko bag for a statement look. GRC Marimekko, Norrmalmstorg 4, 111 46 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 440 3275, marimekko.com H FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 44

FACE TIME Aesop recently launched the new Sublime Replenishing Night Masque (60ml, SEK 1,150) for dry skin. The gel-cream works overnight to nourish and hydrate dry skin thanks to an effective combination of vitamins B, C, E and F, alongside hydrating ingredients such as sodium carrageenan, panthenol and squalane. The mask, which does not leave the face feeling greasy, is designed to complement your daily skincare routine: apply at night and let it work its magic before rinsing it away in the morning. Like Aesop’s other skincare products, this latest offering was carefully researched and developed by the Aesop team using the highest quality ingredients. ilver really deserves a better image,’ says silversmith Efva Attling. ‘It all comes down to a matter of dollars – the assumption that because it’s less expensive than gold, for example, it’s lesser overall. But it’s just different to work with and different in its effect. Gold and silver are just very different moods. Silver seems to be really appreciated now, especially in the fashion industry. Right now, silver seems to be cooler than gold.’ Attling knows what is cool and what isn’t. She was a top model for many years before forming X Models, a pop group that enjoyed huge success in Sweden in the early 1980s. That led to designing clothes for H&M and TV presenting. But her love for jewellery was always there in the background. ‘I like clean design in jewellery, some very classic – more Chanel – and some funkier – more rock ‘n’ roll,’ she says. ‘When I worked in music I tried to produce songs that I thought other people would like – and the results were horrible. So I learned that it’s important to make what you really like, then you can convince others to come with you.’ Attling is one of a number of Swedish jewellery designers who choose not to sideline silver. The Silverboden brand, for example, was established in 1995, in premises occupied by precious metal smiths since 1770, and specialises in boldly styled silver rings. Designs include a chain of square shapes, curled feathers and, to satisfy your inner goth, an outsized skull.

Daniela Upmark’s Blue Billie brand similarly takes a fashion-oriented approach to sterling silver designs, with a constantly updated collection of easily personalised mix and match pieces based around chains and charms. Upmark’s most popular silver pieces include her Big Sun pendant and hoop earrings, horse-bit bracelet, silver signet rings and signature letter charms. Charlotte Ramel’s Ebba Brahe brand, launched seven years ago, is named after her ancestor, a 17th-century Swedish countess, courtier and lover of King Gustavus Adolphus. Among many other more exotic, high-end pieces, Ramel makes simple bracelets in silver with diamonds. Appreciation of silver in Sweden goes way back. Scandinavian silver has been used in various forms of body ornamentation since Viking times, and saw an explosion in the late 19th century with, variously, traditional indigenous naturalist forms and the notable influence of the Arts and Crafts movement. Sweden has mined and refined metal, including silver, for over a millennium and is among the EU’s foremost producers of precious metals, as well as iron ore. The famous Swedish Sala silver mine was in continuous production from the 15th century until 1908. More silver mining may yet come; to date, exploration permits have covered only 4% of Sweden’s land surface.

The appreciation for contemporary design in silver has pedigree too. Nutida Svenskt Silver, a group of silversmiths established in 1963, produces all manner of objects in silver – as well as jewellery, it offers items such as candlesticks, pots and home decorative items, created by the likes of Caroline Lindholm, Josefin Davidsson, August Happ, Magnus Liljedahl and Niklas Ejve, among other names to watch.

Cecilia Kores agrees. In 2014, she founded Mumbai Stockholm, named after an inspirational trip to India. Mindful of the jewellery industry’s poor record on sustainability, she only uses recycled gold in her fine jewellery collections, which include pieces in white gold and platinum. This is for the colder tones and more minimalist style that these silver-like metals provide. ‘It depends on your skin tone,’ she explains. ‘If you’re pale, maybe typically Scandinavian, for example, you might look better in gold’s warmer tones, but those silver tones work well with less intricate, perhaps more graphic designs.’ She adds that their understatement seems particularly Scandinavian. ‘In Scandinavian culture nobody is rich, nobody is poor – instead there’s a huge middle class that tends to avoid anything that looks too flashy. We must be the only jeweller in which customers will tell us that a stone in a piece is too big.’

What’s the appeal? Attling suggests that silver’s prominence in Scandinavia is due to the climate. ‘Given the cold here, there’s not much colour in the landscape for much of the year. That means there tends to be a special emphasis on form over everything else in design, and that includes silver jewellery,’ she says. ‘Silver plays to that Scandinavian preference for a clean aesthetic.’ But silver isn’t ideal for everything. Attling explains that because it’s a soft metal, it’s more difficult to finish with fine detail, and it may not safely hold stones over time if the setting is a delicate one. This is why she prefers to use it for bigger pieces. ‘Silver also works well with larger pieces because of the way it reflects light, especially since it can be polished to a mirror finish,’ she adds. ‘That’s when its own aesthetic really works.’

SANDQVIST Famed for its functional backpack styles, this season Sandqvist debuts a vivid new print that mixes shades of striking blue with contrasting orange and black in a blocky graphic design. Seen across backpacks and laptop bags, the print makes a directional contrast to the pastel shades seen elsewhere in the spring/summer 2020 collection. From lemon yellow to candy pink, grey to mint green there are durable bags to carry everything you need on your trip, as well as leather crossbody, tote and belt bag options. Our favourite style has to be the square handbag with silver chain detail, available in cool mint or classic black. TUMI Reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, Tumi’s Merge line from its spring/summer 2020 collection is its first travel range made using recycled materials. Merge cases are available in classic black, deep blue and a silver colourway with neon yellow accents – the latter is a striking alternative if you’re looking to stand out in the first class lounge. Case exteriors are made of post-industrial recycled nylon, and interiors of recycled plastic bottles. Elsewhere in the latest range, you’ll find the Turin collection of backpacks and a briefcase in striking black croc-effect leather. The Alpha 3 line offers everything from carry-ons and four-wheeled cases to toiletry bags and even a pouch for your tech cables. Whether your next trip is a city break or long haul, pack with Tumi. CARTIER The creation of the modern wristwatch dates back to 1904, when Louis Cartier was inspired to design a practical alternative to the pocket watch for his friend, the pioneering inventor and aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. More than a century later, the Cartier Santos watch remains one of the brand’s most popular men’s styles, with new designs created every year. For the latest iterations, the brand showcases its incredible watchmaking expertise with striking skeleton versions that feature sapphire crystal case backs to make the entire movement visible. The timepieces are available with either a rose gold bracelet or interchangeable leather and alligator straps – with Cartier’s QuickSwitch system, you can adapt this exquisite style to suit any sartorial situation. TRANSPARENT SOUND Fusing the twin pillars of Scandinavian minimalism and impeccable sound quality, Transparent Sound creates speakers for the hardcore music fan. The speaker – available in simple black or white – comes in two sizes, both of which pack a compact punch. Using tempered glass panels and a closed-loop system that allows fans to replace components with the latest technological advancements as they become available, Transparent Sound aims to create a speaker that lasts forever. Compatible with Sonos, Amazon Echo and Bluetooth devices, not to mention true wireless pairing, which allows users to play from two speakers at the same time, these are items that will easily slot into your home entertainment set-up – and your suitcase. Efva Attling
