BLUE HEAVEN Royal Delft – or Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, to give it its Dutch name – has a long and illustrious history. It began making earthenware decorated with Chinese-inspired blue-and-white patterns more than 300 years ago, and continues to create its instantly recognisable Delftware in the small town from which it takes its name. Together the nine hand-painted bowls make the shape of a lotus flower, a symbol of purity and perfection in Chinese culture – entirely apt for such an exquisite example of craftsmanship. TREASURE TROVE Jeweller Wouters & Hendrix has opened a plush new store in the chic De Negen Straatjes district in Amsterdam. The fine silver and gold jewellery stands out against the clean white walls at the front of the space, while towards the back a pink crushed-velvet wall creates a cosy, almost boudoir-like feel. Once

a curiosity shop, the store has kept its quirky features with surrealist ornaments, such as an oversized cloud and red lips, sharing the window display with the brand’s covetable jewellery pieces. rre Wouters & Hendrix, 5 Oude Spiegelstraat, 1016 BM Amsterdam, +31 (0)20 237 1788, wouters-hendrix.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 72

PRACTICAL CULTURE For autumn/winter 2017/18, the evolution of denim continues to be central to the G-Star Raw brand. Adaptability and functionality are integral to creative director Aitor Thorp’s approach: trenches transcend seasons, outerwear is warm yet breathable and jeans or jackets are equipped with pockets and components that can move for ease. The collection delivers on high aesthetics, too, with Dutch artist Jan Asselijn’s 1650 painting The Threatened Swan used as a motif on an overalls-style jumpsuit, a bomber jacket and jeans in different ways from print to embroidery. rre G-Star Raw, Dagelijkse Groenmarkt 28, 2513 AL The Hague, +31 (0)70 360 0575, g-star.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 79

SHOOTING STAR In 2017, Nikon introduced the D7500 digital SLR camera. Slimmer and lighter than the previous D7200, this latest model (€1,499, body only) also features a number of other improvements, including a 180,000-pixel RGB sensor. Equipped with an Expeed 5 image-processing engine, the D7500 can be counted on for image quality of the highest standard, even in action shots or videos. grc globalblue.com

Taking inspiration from both its home town of Amsterdam and the city of New York, Mercer prides itself on its independent outlook, creating footwear with a difference in small, family-owned factories. The new Waverly Offs (â‚Ź320) have been designed with special occasions in mind;

msterdam has long been a destination of choice for cultured travellers seeking the new and exciting, and the latest must-visit attraction – for locals and visitors alike – is X Bank, a concept store that is so much more than a concept store. Describing itself as a ‘vault of Dutch talent’, X Bank is one of the most exciting creative spaces in the city, comprising retail store, exhibition hall and installation gallery, and acting as a meeting point for, as the team puts it, ‘anything and everything’ in the fields of cutting-edge Dutch fashion, design and art. ‘X Bank is a place where you

can get inspired and discover all the talent the Netherlands has to offer,’ says creative content manager Danielle Welling. Spanning an impressive 700 square metres, the multipurpose space aims to serve as an epicentre of Dutch design, with different areas supporting local talent through different media and platforms. The ground floor of the building is predominantly used as an art gallery, playing host to small and large-scale exhibitions, events and gatherings that are open to the public. X Bank has an ever-changing roster of artists and provides a selection of new artwork every six to eight weeks to ensure

Above: inside X Bank, one of Amsterdam’s most exciting creative spaces

One thing that stands out at X Bank is the extent of it all – not just the space but the array of products that visitors are always able to find something fresh and exciting. From photography series to detailed charcoal works and even fashion installations, each exhibition is a unique glimpse into the best of the local art scene. The first floor is home to a retail space that offers pieces by more than 180 Dutch labels, with a wide Above: fashion and more at X Bank

range of products from fashion to home accessories and original artworks. High-end and established designers sit alongside smaller local labels, with areas curated in terms of themes and concepts – it is important to X Bank that both long-standing and emerging talents are given the same platform, and the team is involved with every step of the process. ‘We do everything ourselves, from selecting the designers to creating a fashion fantasy in our store: everything is done in-house,’ says Welling. From local jeans label Denham, which offers chic and contemporary denim cuts, to shoes by United Nude, a luxurious and avant-garde footwear brand, each collection and designer is chosen on the same

basis. ‘Designers have to be Dutch to qualify, and from that point on our buying and store team will decide whether the brand or product is the right fit for our concept,’ Welling explains. The team is inspired by Amsterdam’s distinctive style when it comes to selecting products. ‘As the Dutch are very much about the practical, Amsterdam has a very down-to-earth fashion scene where people dress simply, yet elegantly,’ comments Welling. Simple is never boring here, however. ‘Amsterdam is all about denim, bold statements in ready-to-wear and an urban-chic feeling,’ she continues. X Bank’s selection ranges from the classic to the ultra modern, so whether you’re looking for a statement piece or

simply a wardrobe staple, you’ll find something just right for you. Labels to look out for include Anecdote, famous for its feminine and timeless knitwear, and Chasin’ Royal Attitude, a playful collaboration between Chasin’ and the Royal Netherlands Navy that repurposes old uniforms into fun fashion pieces. Bas Kosters, an artist and designer who has turned his hand to everything from fashion design to illustration, is another highlight of the collection. His bold, characterful clothing and prints burst with imagination. One of X Bank’s most exciting offerings is its programme of exclusive design collaborations, which are created alongside budding designers and established

names alike. Highlights so far include a capsule collection of semi-couture pieces with Dutch designer Esther Dorhout Mees, who is famous for her bold shapes, and a swimwear line with Daily Paper, one of Amsterdam’s most of-the-moment menswear labels. For the start of the autumn/winter 2017/18 season, X Bank exclusively partnered with Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam, showcasing an overview of looks straight from the catwalks of seven standout designers. The content of X Bank is constantly changing, and you never know what you’ll discover on your next visit. One thing that really stands out

at X Bank is the extent of it all – not just the space, but the array of products, and even the information available. With every piece so carefully selected, it’s no surprise to learn that the team is brimming with information on the provenance and inspirations behind each item, meaning clients can always be sure they’re buying something with a story behind it. And if information overload threatens, the building that houses X Bank is also home to the five-star W Amsterdam hotel, which has a luxury spa as well as a small lounge and a bar in which to enjoy the perfect end to an intense day of retail therapy

The Home Of Luxury When shopping in Amsterdam, de Bijenkorf is one store not to be missed, as Ruairidh Pritchard discovers

msterdam has one of the most diverse shopping scenes in Europe thanks to its mix of trendy vintage treasure troves, high-end boutiques and cool concept stores. But for the best in luxury shopping in Holland, those in the know turn to de Bijenkorf. Opened in 1870, de Bijenkorf – ‘the beehive’ in English – began life as a small haberdashery on Amsterdam’s Nieuwendijk. Today the department store is the biggest in the Netherlands. It has seven

Above: Rituals corner at de Bijenkorf

branches throughout the country, but it’s the flagship store on Amsterdam’s Dam square that is Holland’s main shopping destination. With five floors of fashion, jewellery, beauty, homeware and food, de Bijenkorf has everything a visitor to Amsterdam could ever need, all under one roof. Brands on offer include Italian labels Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci and Prada, French fashion houses Louis Vuitton, Hermès and Givenchy, and British brands Burberry, Victoria

46 | F E AT U R E S

It’s easy to see why de Bijenkorf is Amsterdam’s premier department store Beckham and Charlotte Tilbury. As Irene van Lieshout, buying manager of womenswear, explains, the buyers pride themselves on ‘always being on top of newness and bringing new and exciting brands to the Netherlands’. The range of labels here can rival that of any leading department store across the world. Another strong point of de Bijenkorf’s collection is its variety. ‘It is very diverse,’ says van Lieshout. ‘That is the strength of a department store. We are accessible to a broad range of customers with various interests.’ All ages and tastes will find something to love here, from local labels to the best in international

brands. ‘We will never lose our Dutch roots and remain close to local brands, but the customer is becoming more international and we try to find a balance somewhere in between,’ she continues. As one would expect, the luxury at de Bijenkorf doesn’t stop at the labels on the rails. The department store’s impressive shopping services are among the best in the city. One of the store’s most popular services takes place away from the busy sales area in a discreet lounge on the second floor, where de Bijenkorf offers a luxury personal shopping service. The by-appointment service consists of a consultation with a dedicated personal shopper, who

The store also has an in-house tailoring service, where expert tailors will make alterations and adjustments to ensure visitors leave with purchases that are perfect for them. De Bijenkorf’s services don’t stop at fashion either. The store’s Treatment Room is located on the ground floor and provides an enticing range of beauty therapy treatments, including facials and expert make-up advice, using products from leading brands including Chanel, Dior and La Mer. The Rob Peetoom hair and

beauty salon on the fifth floor offers a selection of hair, make-up and beauty treatments, ensuring visitors to de Bijenkorf leave looking and feeling more stylish than when they arrived. Amid the beauty and shopping services available, de Bijenkorf also caters specifically to international customers. On the store’s fourth floor, visitors will find the Netherland’s first and only Tax Free Lounge, where non-EU shoppers can receive an instant tax refund. In addition to the lounge, every cash desk on the store’s five floors offers tax-refund services for non-EU residents, as well as a dynamic currency conversion system, allowing customers to pay

And to ensure the staff at de Bijenkorf are as helpful as possible, multilingual hosts are dotted throughout the store, to ensure that visitors who don’t speak Dutch or English are looked after. After a long day of shopping and beauty treatments, it’s only natural that visitors to de Bijenkorf may end up a little hungry. Luckily the store’s fifth floor is also home to de Bijenkorf Kitchen, serving a host of international cuisines, including Japanese, Italian and American dishes, guaranteed to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. Similarly, the Dam Café on the store’s first floor is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine,

champagne or a cocktail while perusing the café’s menu of delicious light bites and snacks. When it comes to the end of a long day’s shopping the last thing anyone wants to do is carry their new purchases back to the hotel. Luckily, the department store’s hotel delivery service allows customers to pass on their shopping haul to a member of staff, who will arrange delivery. Stocking the biggest names in fashion, with personal shopping, tailoring and alteration services, hair and beauty treatments, Tax Free shopping services, and a wealth of culinary treats, it’s easy to see why de Bijenkorf is Amsterdam’s premier department store and an essential port of call

TABLE TALK Amsterdam’s leading restaurants offer flavours from all corners of the world. Ginger Rose Clark explores the results

The Netherlands has long had an international outlook. An established trading history with its neighbours provided the perfect base for growth in the 17th century in particular, which saw the country expand its ventures much further afield. Enterprises such as the Dutch East India Company, founded in 1602, played a major part in bringing spices, tea and porcelain, for example, into the country. These ties with the rest of the world can still be traced in Dutch culture, including in the country’s food offering, and nowhere is this heritage easier to discover than in the melting pot of Amsterdam. Take your taste buds on a world tour without even leaving the city. globalblue.com

At brunch opt for the ubiquitous avocado on toast or try something different such as kimchi waffles or broken-egg curry, while dinner consists of a choice of small plates to share. Because of its roots, Little Collins draws on Australian coffee culture meaning you can expect to find topquality coffee at this joint, as well as a selection of Australian wines and beers. INDRAPURA Having once been a Dutch colony, it comes as no surprise that Indonesia has made its mark on the food scene of the Netherlands. Indrapura offers authentic Indonesian cuisine under the aegis of head chef Paula Toorop, who uses her own traditional recipes. Highlights include a lobster

dish in spicy coconut sauce. The restaurant specialises in rijsttafel – ‘rice table’ in English – which consists of an assortment of different seasonal dishes, accompanied by white rice, that are designed to be shared. Located within Amsterdam’s Conservatorium hotel, Taiko specialises in Asian food. Under the lead of chef Schilo van Coevorden, the restaurant creates contemporary Asian dishes using locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Indulge in a cocktail before savouring sashimi, sushi or dim sum, then round off the meal with one of the restaurant’s tantalising desserts. Every evening, guests are treated to live taiko performances, the drum after which the restaurant is named. globalblue.com

PERFECT DAY: ROTTERDAM A dynamic city with an ever-changing skyline and a fearless approach to reinvention, Rotterdam is an ideal day-trip destination. This famous port town offers a wealth of shops, cultural attractions, festivals, restaurants and parks. SHOP spends a day exploring Rotterdam’s newest stores, and taking in the culture at its modernist museums.

KUNSTHAL Kunsthal modern art museum eschews permanent collections in favour of a constantly rotating selection of contemporary exhibitions. These highlight the best new developments in the art world, or focus on less famous pieces and movements. With around 20 exhibitions a year, this is one of the country’s most dynamic cultural spaces.

Topshop and Topman have opened a sleek new boutique in the recently opened Hudson’s Bay store in Rotterdam. Across 900 square metres, the new space offers a vast array of the brands’ youthful and trend-led menswear, womenswear and accessories. Men should look out for Topman’s high-quality premium lines, while women should make a beeline for the Topshop cosmetics range: beauty editors swear by it.

KIJK-KUBUS Rotterdam’s architecturally intriguing cube houses have become an icon of the city, and while most of them are privately owned, one is actually home to a small museum that’s open to the public. Called Kijk-Kubus (Show Cube), it focuses on the design of the houses themselves. Visitors can experience what it’s like to live inside them, and learn the history and inspirations behind them.

PHOTO: CAPTUS IMAGO/PATRICK BOS KESSEN

globalblue.ru

TERJEMAHAN BAHASA INDONESIA
