Photoworks is a unique learning center providing a personalized atmosphere for students to develop their visual photography talents. Small classes in both digital and film mediums and professional faculty lead each student through the technical and aesthetic approaches to photography.

PHOTOWORKS STUDIO

Photoworks Studio is located in the Arcade building on the frst foor. The studio is equipped for analogue and digital photography. The studio provides b/w flm development and printing with an enlarger for each student, two flm developing rooms and a mat cutting area. The digital studio is equipped with six iMacs, scanners and two Epson printers. Laptops are encouraged for the digital student. A comprehensive photography library is available to examine the masters of photography. PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY

The gallery space provides an opportunity for emerging and professional photographers to exhibit their work. Exhibitions highlight both professional and student work. Exhibit announcements with details can be found on Photoworks website. All Photoworks exhibits begin with an opening night conversation led by the juror. Check the website for additional information.

PROFESSIONAL PHOTO SERVICES

Photoworks faculty will provide professional services upon request such as one-on-one tutorials, mentorship meetings, art portfolio reviews for adults and high school students preparing portfolios for college applications. Contact Photoworks at info@ glenechophotoworks.org for details.

DARKROOM

Our darkroom and computer lab are open for public use on Sundays from 1-7pm. The darkroom and digital labs are stafed by an experienced photographer, and an introduction to the facility and procedures will be provided for new attendees. Learn more at: glenechophotoworks.org/labs.

INTERNSHIP

Photoworks ofers volunteer opportunities to high school students and adults such as internship and docent opportunities, and other volunteer opportunities. Learn more at: glenechophotoworks.org/volunteer.

COFFEE & CRITIQUE

Join with photographers from the metropolitan area for a 2-hour jam session led by a faculty member to view and discuss your photos over cofee and bagels. This is a “Prints “ONLY” photo session led by Karen Keating. The sessions are monthly except August. The monthly session sign-ups are through EventBrite. This class is for photographers who need one-on-one help in setting up their cameras so that they can take full advantage of their camera’s capabilities and produce correctly exposed and composed photographs. Basic compositional approaches will be discussed and explained. Minimum age 18.

This class is for photographers who want to learn the basics of digital editing and printing. Depending on the student’s preference, they may use either Lightroom Classic and/or Photoshop for both editing and printing. The class will be held in Photoworks digital lab and you will have access to inkjet printers. Minimum age 18.

Basic: Lightroom Classic From A to Z–Image Editing and Digital Asset Management | $425

The emphasis of this deep-dive course is on setup, organization, importing, exporting, searching and the extremely powerful editing capabilities of Lightroom Classic (LRC). This is the frst LRC class you should take, and even Novice LRC users have found it extremely helpful, especially if they have tried to learn LRC on their own. Minimum age 18.

This class is for individuals new to digital cameras, editing software, and using their desktop or laptop for digital photography. All the basics will be covered with lots of time for discussion and questions. The discussion on genres of photography will help participants begin to think about where they would like to focus their time on photography, or whether, like most, initially being a “generalist” is the way to go. This digital printing class introduces digital photographers to the essentials of digital printing. We will use two Epson printers in the Photoworks Digital Lab, but everything you learn will also apply to Canon printers. You will learn about fle preparation, color management, paper choices, printer settings, printer maintenance, and making a high-quality print. Minimum age 18.

This course will expose students to the full cycle of Black & White flm photography, from loading a 35mm camera to the fnal print. Through a combination of instructor demonstration and student hands-on work, this short introductory course will provide a practitioner’s perspective on the art and craft of flm photography. Basic: Advanced Digital Camera Techniques | $295

This class is for photographers who want to go beyond the very basics of digital photography and begin to become more creative and explorative in their photography. The full capabilities of their cameras will be explored, so that the students begin to feel comfortable taking more control over the photographs that they (not their cameras) make. Minimum age 18.

Basic: Darkroom Photography Fundamentals | $400

Students will get extended experience with shooting, processing, and printing black-and-white flm. Upon completion students should feel comfortable with loading, exposing, and processing 35mm black-and-white flm. They should also feel comfortable with making basic black-and-white prints on RC paper. They should understand how to make test strips, how to adjust contrast, and basic burning and dodging techniques. Minimum age 18.

Basic: Clean Up Your Mess in Lightroom Classic | $99

Current LRC users who fnd their photos getting out of control, will learn how to reorganize and simplify their archive of images for use in LRC. If you are not yet using LRC, you will learn how to organize your photographs prior to installing LRC, which will save you considerable time and angst in the future. And importantly, you’ll learn what not to do, so that you and LRC will have total control of your images and folders. Minimum age 18.

Intermediate: Gum Bichromate Weekend Workshop | $250

Gum bichromate is a highly versatile hand-made photo process that encourages creative image making. Using medium/ large format negatives, students practice mixing and applying emulsions, image exposure and development. Creative controls such as color choices, selective development, and multiple printing will be covered. Digital negatives can be made if needed. Minimum age 16.

Intermediate Alternative Process: Intro To Platinum/Palladium Printing Workshop | $350

Students will learn how to make a digital negative suited for Platinum/Palladium printing. They will learn chemical safety, proper tools and hardware, how to mix chemistry, how to coat paper, how to expose prints and how to process them. Students will learn about the history of the process, the diference between platinum and palladium, basic troubleshooting techniques, and how to select images that are well suited to these printing methods. $50 materials fee due to the instructor on the frst day of class. Minimum age 18.

Intermediate: Cyanotype Printing and Toning | $350

This course presents everything needed for students to pursue cyanotype printing on their own. Discussions will include chemical sources, lighting requirements, suitable negatives, choice of papers, and technique. Students will have the opportunity to mix cyanotype chemistry, hand-coat paper, make exposures, and process cyanotype prints. Basic lab and safety protocols for the cyanotype process will also be discussed. Basic darkroom knowledge expected. Minimum age 18.

Advanced: Tuesday Advanced Darkroom Club | $350

Explore the possibilities and implications of photography in near darkness and/or with long exposures. Look at historical and contemporary artists for ideas and share your work in group critiques. Your images will be critiqued by the instructor and other class members, helping you to improve your photographs, but importantly, to become a better at self-critique of your own images. You will be given weekly shooting assignments that will be critiqued to help improve your photographs and to build your portfolio. You will also learn to improve your images by studying the work of many well-known photographers. Minimum age 18.

Photographing at night is challenging but extremely rewarding. Learn the fundamentals of shooting long exposures and take advantage of existing light sources. Whether shooting cityscapes, street scenes or smaller details, long exposure shooting is all about preparation and reacting to the situation. Learn, practice and share your photos for feedback. Never have fowers and plants received so much attention! We will learn how to make portraits of these subjects using studio lighting techniques and small fash units, learn how to create our own light, as well as to use shadows to emphasize the textures, columns and shapes of our subjects. Start learning studio lighting techniques with lighting guru and bestselling author Frank Van Riper. Shooting at night is totally diferent from daytime. We will cover many highly creative approaches, such as painting with light, varying shutter speeds to either stop the action or accentuate it, using natural light as well as fash, capturing Glen Echo’s neon lighting to create amazing photographs of this art deco icon. Photographic style class begins with a concentration on Master Fine Art photographers. A list of masters will be discussed and each student will choose a master photographer, standing in his/her footsteps emulating style, content, and quality of light. Students will present a fnal set of images to peers and faculty. Resources are books, online researching, exhibits and videos. Minimum age 18.

Elective: The Art and Craft of Black and White Digital Photography Workshop | $300

Efectively conceiving, shooting, processing and even printing B&W digital photographs is totally diferent from color. We have to learn to “see” diferently because B&W is not reality. This class will help you develop these skill sets and help you see, think and edit in B&W so that you can produce stunning and dramatic classic B&W photographs. Minimum age 18.

Starting with instructor-supplied paper, gelatin, sensitizer, lithographic ink, medium/large format negatives, and simple equipment, students will learn to make striking and unique photographic images using the ‘oil’ printing process, which is based on the disafnity of oil and water. Photographing at night, especially during the holiday season can be a challenging, but extremely rewarding experience. Join Joe Bucherer to capture with your camera the holiday mood, beauty and feeling of this special time of year. The important trade-ofs of wide-open apertures, slower shutter speeds and high ISOs will be covered. Minimum age 18.

Elective: Building Your Portfolio | $350

Students will defne their visual content, articulate their goals and work to complete a set of cohesive images. ”Criticizing Photographs” by Terry Barrett will build a critique process with description frst, form articulated, interpretation and facts for discussion. Barrett’s basic practice gives students clarity, understanding and information about their work. Minimum age 18.

Already comfortable using Lightroom Classic (LRC) but would like to take your evaluation and advanced editing skills to a higher level, then this workshop is for you! We will go beyond LRC classes you have taken. We will use a unique case study approach to learn advanced critiquing principles and LRC’s advanced editing tools. Minimum age 18.

Elective: Box-Making | $350

Beautiful handmade boxes can be used for presenting your portfolio of photos or other artwork. Learn to make two decorative boxes, a simple box for 5” x 7” photos and an 8” x 10” clamshell box, both covered with decorative paper and book cloth. There will be a $25 materials fee payable to the instructor. Minimum age 18.

Elective: Solve the Mystery of Compositing Using Photoshop | $425

Do you want to go beyond traditional digital photographs and be incredibly creative in your artistic photographic endeavors? Compositing (combining multiple images) is a skill that requires vision and Photoshop knowledge, which is what we’ll cover in this class. Tutorials will cover the basic Photoshop skills needed to create layered images. Unleash your creativity! Minimum age 18.

Alternate registration methods

Registration forms may be submitted by mail (mail to: GEPPAC, attn. Registrar, 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, MD 20812). Registrations may also be completed over the phone by calling 301.634.2255. Payment is due in full at the time of registration.

Registration for Social Dance Classes

Students may register for social dance classes at the door on the first night of the series, although pre-registration is still recommended. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of class to register at the door. NOTE: Registration for some dance workshops will take place ONLY at the door. Such instances are noted in the description of the class online and in the catalog.

Office Hours/Location

The Glen Echo Park Partnership office is located on the second floor of the North Arcade Building. Office hours are Monday through Saturday 10am to 6pm.

Class Registration Fee

A nonrefundable $15 Registration Fee per quarter applies to each registration (per separate registration form or per online registration session); an individual student may sign up for an unlimited number of classes within a quarter and be subject to a single fee. This fee ensures the viability of Glen Echo Park educational programs by contributing to the administrative costs associated with managing over one thousand courses each year. Registration fees are nonrefundable except when a class is cancelled by Glen Echo Park.

Refund Policy

If you wish to withdraw from a class or workshop, you must submit your request in writing. Email notification to registrar@glenechopark.org will ensure the most prompt response to your request, but other forms of written notification are acceptable, as well. When withdrawing from a course, include the student’s name, telephone number, course title and start date, and reason for withdrawal. Please note that registration fees are nonrefundable except when a course is cancelled by Glen Echo Park.

Written notification of withdrawal must be received by the following deadlines:

• 8 days or more prior to class or workshop: full tuition refunded minus a $20 cancellation fee.

• 7 days prior to a class and up to 24 hours after the first class: 50% tuition refunded, minus $20 cancellation fee.

• 7 days prior to a workshop: sorry, no refund.

• 24 hours after first class or later: sorry, no refund.

• Registration fees & camp deposits are nonrefundable. Camp fees are noted in course descriptions.

Transfer Policy

Course tuition and registration fees are nontransferable. If you wish to move to another class, you must register for the new class separately and request a refund for the original class. See above for refund policies.

Class Cancellations

The Partnership reserves the right to cancel classes that do not meet minimum enrollment. Enrolled students will be notified in advance of class cancellations.

Students enrolling in classes and programs through the Glen Echo Park Partnership (the Partnership) accept these Registration and Class Policies as part of the terms and conditions of their registration.

Registration Fee: A non-refundable Registration Fee of $15 per quarter applies to each separate registration (per registration form or per online registration session); individual students may sign up for an unlimited number of classes within a single registration.

Class Cancellations: The Partnership reserves the right to cancel classes that do not meet a minimum enrollment at the discretion of the Partnership. Enrolled students will be notified in advance of class cancellations. Class tuition is refunded when a class is cancelled by the Partnership.

• Registration fees and camp deposits are non-refundable. Camp fees are noted in course descriptions.

• Course tuition and registration fees are nontransferable.

Class Policies: The Partnership and its partners offer non-accredited classes and workshops to the public. Because group cooperation is essential for a successful learning environment, the Partnership reserves the right to remove a student from a class or workshop if an instructor believes, in their sole discretion, that a student’s behavior disrupts the learning environment. Students with special needs, or their parents or guardians, should contact the instructor prior to registration to discuss any accommodations that might be needed for successful participation in a group class. The Partnership reserves the right to substitute an appropriate instructor when necessary and to change a program location when needed. Please be mindful of class start and end times. Neither the Partnership nor the instructor are able to provide pre-or post class care, unless part of a scheduled program.

Likeness Release: The Partnership and instructors reserve the right to make recordings (by use of any media) of a student’s work, voice, actions and/or likeness (collectively “Likeness”) and to use such recordings in promotional, marketing, or other printed or electronic media communication. In consideration of participating in the class(es), the undersigned, on behalf of themselves or their child under the age of 18, hereby consents to the making of such recordings and releases the Partnership and its instructors from any and all liability arising out of any recording, use, or distribution of the student’s Likeness.

Release From Liability: I wish to register to participate in one or more classes offered by Glen Echo Park or to register my child who is under the age of 18. I understand that some of the activities involve risks including, but not limited to, bodily injury, death, or property damage. I also understand the importance of following all instructions, heeding all safety warnings, and not engaging in any activity I am not able to perform safely based on my physical condition or otherwise.

In consideration of participating in the class(es), the undersigned, on behalf of themselves or their child under the age of 18, agrees not to make any claim against, and to release from any liability, the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, the National Park Service, the United States Government, Montgomery County, Maryland, the class instructors, and their respective officers, directors, shareholders, employees, and agents (the ”Released Parties”) arising out of participation in class activities, whether caused by the instructor’s negligence or otherwise, and whether for bodily injury, death, property damage, or loss of any kind or nature, including, without limitation, claims concerning the right of privacy and/or publicity arising from the recording, use or distribution of the student’s Likeness.

Directions to the Park

BY CAR: When traveling via car, please use this GPS address for the main parking lot: 5801 Oxford Road, Glen Echo, MD

From the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495), take exit 40 on the outer loop or exit 41 east on the inner loop. Take Clara Barton/Cabin John Parkway to the MacArthur Blvd/Glen Echo exit. Make a left onto MacArthur Blvd. Cross Goldsboro Road and then make a left onto Oxford Road where you will see our public parking lot.

From downtown Washington, take Massachusetts Avenue northwest, to its end at Goldsboro Road, turn left, and continue to MacArthur Blvd. Turn right on MacArthur Blvd and take an immediate left onto Oxford Road where you will see our public parking lot.

For Drop Off/Pick Up and Ridesharing Apps, you can use the street address of 7300 MacArthur Blvd, Glen Echo, MD 20812 and meet your ride in front of the large neon sign by the entrance that is visible from MacArthur Blvd.

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Take Montgomery County Ride-On bus #29, operating daily from Friendship Heights and Bethesda metro stations on the Red Line. For information on rates and schedules, follow this link to Route 29 information on www.montgomerycountymd.gov.

Free Parking

Free parking for Glen Echo Park is in a public parking lot located just of MacArthur Blvd on Oxford Road, across from the Glen Echo Shopping Center. From the parking lot, walk along the path across the Minnehaha Creek bridge and into the Park. Please do not park in “permit only” areas or the town streets near the Irish Inn.

Accessible parking can be found in two locations:

Permit Parking Lot at 7300 MacArthur Blvd, Glen Echo, MD 20812. Drive through the permit parking lot to reach the accessible spaces, which are located near the iconic Glen Echo Park neon sign. A parking permit is not required to use the accessible parking spaces. This location is the closest to Park facilities.

Main Parking Lot at 5801 Oxford Road, Glen Echo, MD 20812. In this large parking lot, the accessible spaces are located close the entrance to the Park.

• Handicapped accessible restrooms are located in the Arcade Building, the Spanish Ballroom and the brick building located next to the Carousel.
