Caring for our Community, Responding to a Pandemic

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT & CEO RAY VARA

Dear Hawai‘i Pacific Health Supporter,
The growth and success of Hawai‘i Pacific Health in recent years has been overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a society, we have been challenged by the virus in ways that were almost unimaginable before March of this year. The worldwide social and economic impact has been devastating, not only in the loss of life, but also with the economic hardship caused by businesses closing and skyrocketing unemployment. Here in Hawai‘i an almost complete shutdown of tourism, the economic engine that drives our local economy, has had a debilitating effect on businesses large and small.
Through it all, more than 7,000 members of the Hawai‘i Pacific Health family have not only persevered, but in many ways excelled. At the onset of the pandemic, Specimen Collection Sites, a COVID-19 Virtual Clinic and critical Respiratory Evaluation Clinics were stood up in a matter of days to serve the public health needs of our patients and the community. System-wide telehealth initiatives that were already in development were accelerated and put in place to protect our patients and providers. Video and phone visits are now commonplace with more than half of all clinic visits currently being done using telehealth modalities.
As the head of one of Hawai‘i’s largest health care providers, I have been personally involved in volunteer committees with government, business and community leaders to help assure the health and safety of our residents, as well as to chart a path to safely reopen our economy for residents and visitors alike. As the virus is still with us, our work is not done but significant progress has been made through a collaborative partnership for the benefit of our state.
Equally impressive is the generosity of our local community. The Aloha Spirit is alive and well in Hawai‘i. Since mid-March, Hawai‘i Pacific Health was fortunate to be the recipient of more than $800,000 in monetary donations for COVID-19 relief efforts. We also received many in-kind donations of food and other critical supplies. I cannot begin to tell you how grateful we were to receive this support. With so many people being challenged economically and socially, this expression of support makes the work we do truly worthwhile.
Due to your commitment and support of our mission, even during these difficult times, we continue to see the benefits of an engaged community and the positive impact it has on our facilities and, ultimately, our patients.
Here’s hoping that you and your families are safe as we navigate our way through these challenging times and thank you for your ongoing generosity.
Sincerely,
Ray Vara President & CEO Hawai‘i Pacific Health
YOUR GIFT, YOUR IMPACT
Every gift makes a difference at Hawai‘i Pacific Health and the community’s support has been incredible during the pandemic. Here are some of the donations that HPH’s facilities received in response to COVID-19.
Straub Medical Center
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Motiv8 Foundation did just what its name implies; kept Straub Medical Center employees nourished and motivated. The organization donated 100 bentos a day for nearly a month to Straub’s first responders at the main King Street location and all of the medical center’s satellite clinics on O‘ahu. Motiv8 Foundation was started by Las Vegas Raiders quarterback and local boy Marcus Mariota and aims to create and support economic, educational and athletic programs for youth in Hawai‘i and Oregon. The name Motiv8 represents not only the foundation’s mission, but also honors Mariota’s jersey number and Hawai‘i’s 808 area code.
Wilcox Medical Center
Grateful patients are supporting Wilcox Medical Center through this pandemic. The Pepper family made a generous donation in thanks for the care family members received from Wilcox and to support the medical center’s safety measures related to COVID-19. The inspiration behind the gift was Wilcox physician, Dr. Joseph Murray, and his team at Kaua‘i Medical Clinic’s Kōloa location. “Dr. Murray, Georgia, Glenda, Sheryl Lynn and Sandy have taken care of my husband, Yori, and I, when we are on island, since 2012,” said Catherine ‘Willie’ Pepper. “Their clinic’s walk-in policy enables everyone to be treated on the same day, which is amazing. It is a true neighborhood clinic.”
Pali Momi Medical Center
Every1ne Hawai‘i and Zippy’s Restaurants joined forces to unite the community and energize health care workers at Pali Momi Medical Center. The two organizations partnered to deliver 100 bentos every night for a month to local hospitals, including to all of Hawaiʻi Pacific Health’s medical centers on Oʻahu. For this give back campaign, Zippy’s provided the bentos to nighttime staff, and Every1ne Hawai‘i played a pivotal role in delivering the meals. Every1ne Hawaiʻi is a collaborative team composed of individuals from all facets of the community who come together to engage, empower and activate Hawaiʻi’s next generation.

American Savings Bank is showing that great efforts equal great results. After a successful series of Star Wars-themed fundraisers, ASB team members presented Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children with a $79,220 donation from its annual Kahiau Employee Giving Campaign. This year’s Kahiau campaign was a record breaker, with the largest amount raised and highest employee participation rate since it began in 2013. The force is definitely with American Savings Bank and its out-of-this-world support of Kapi‘olani programs like Child Life Services, COVID-19 relief efforts and Santa’s Workshop.

MESSAGE FROM SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT DAWN DUNBAR

Dear Friends of Hawai‘i Pacific Health,
While our lives have changed because of the pandemic, one thing has not – Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s mission to create a healthier Hawai‘i. The challenges posed by COVID-19 are significant, but the community’s support during these trying times has been incredible.
Whether it was homemade masks, personal protective equipment (PPE) donations or delicious meals to keep our medical teams fed, your donations are a daily reminder of the generosity and aloha inherent in our community. The outpouring in dollar-by-dollar gifts across the Islands also reflected the overall sincerity of all who helped. We created the COVID-19 Relief Efforts Fund as a response to donors desires to give specifically to programs they deemed were needed most.
And even with all that is happening related to COVID-19, we still have ongoing needs and initiatives that require support. We celebrated contributions that have made significant impacts for both our patients and employees. We are grateful for the opening of the new Kobayashi & Kosasa Family Dining Room at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children; the largest gift to support cancer care research and clinical trials at Straub from Barry and Virginia Weinman; a generous gift towards Pali Momi’s Simulation Education and Training from the Atherton Family Foundation; and the largest donation in Wilcox Medical Center history, in support of emergency department and trauma services from the William, Jeff and Jennifer Gross Foundation.
Our system of caring professionals, based at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center, Straub Medical Center and Wilcox Medical Center, are all working tirelessly to address both the challenges we face now, and the future needs of our patients and their families.
Thank you for recognizing the importance of our mission and for continuing to give to health care. We are all stronger together.
We wish you continued health and happiness.

Dawn M. Dunbar Senior Vice President, Philanthropy

Caring for our Community
Community during COVID-19

ONE VIRUS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD, THAT’S THE REALITY OF COVID-19. Our way of life and our approach to health care has forever been altered. The pandemic has been a daily dose of constant change and uncertainty for medical teams across the globe. For Hawai‘i Pacific Health (HPH) the primary focus was the safety of patients, physicians, nurses and staff while serving the community in its greatest time of need. This effort would take everyone at HPH to address everything from treating COVID-19 patients to helping families learn how to connect virtually with their doctors.
“We have approached the pandemic with a determination to have the same approach to needed changes as one system; not as four hospitals with a lot of clinics,” said Dr. Melinda Ashton, executive vice president and chief quality officer of Hawai‘i Pacific Health. “Most important to me has been gathering the best information about PPE (personal protective equipment) and then working hard to make sure that all our staff who need to know how to use it, do know. The teamwork involved in sourcing PPE, UV disinfection of N95s, responding to questions and adjusting as appropriate has all been great to see and be a part of.”
Infection prevention at HPH was a collaborative effort that included state and city leaders, health care industry competitors and multiple other groups. And the best way to learn was to listen. “Having the humility to know that not everything is known and that we need to adapt to evolving information meant listening to the front lines as they often see things that can help,” said Dr. Leslie Chun, CEO of the Hawai‘i Pacific Health Medical Group.
FIRST ROW (LEFT TO RIGHT): Martha Smith, executive vice president of O‘ahu operations for Hawai‘i Pacific Health; Dr. Leslie Chun, CEO of Hawai‘i Pacific Health Medical Group and Dr. Melinda Ashton, executive vice president and CQO of Hawai‘i Pacific Health.
SECOND ROW (LEFT TO RIGHT): Dr. Bennett Loui, chief of Internal Medicine for Straub Medical Center; Dr. Huidy Shu, chief of Medical Subspecialties for Hawai‘i Pacific Health Medical Group and Dr. Sidney Johnson, chief of Surgery for Hawai‘i Pacific Health Medical Group.

A good example of HPH’s rapid response to needs would be the respiratory evaluation clinics that went up in just a few days. Dr. John Mickey, Straub internal medicine specialist, reached out to HPH leadership and warned that physicians needed a way to safely see people with respiratory illnesses while they screened COVID-19 patients with breathing problems. Dr. Chun recalled sharing the idea with Ray Vara, president and CEO of Hawai‘i Pacific Health. Ray immediately identified an empty space and then an incredible transformation happened. “Within 48 hours, our respiratory evaluation clinic was open to see patients,” said Dr. Chun. “We got different sinks, made exam rooms and put in new flooring. It just boggles my mind. In a short time, we established workflows, determined where patients should park, set up computers and confirmed everything was up to regulation.” The progressive move was validated as this clinic, and others to follow, averaged 60-70 patients a day.
The respiratory evaluation clinics were complemented by testing sites at all HPH medical centers. Again, the process would utilize tented outdoor spaces for the initial contactless connection with patients. “We decided early on that we needed to set up a way to protect the patients and staff within our clinics. The drive-through specimen collection was a way to centralize that activity and make it safer for all. It turns out that for a period of time, other hospitals, outside of HPH, were sending their patients to our drive-up systems because they didn't have their own.” The long-term testing sites, which were open seven days a week, were funded by HPH for months as a service to the community.
The Employer Hotline, another free resource, connected employers and business owners to physician experts for guidance on addressing and reducing COVID-19 workplace exposures. This call-in initiative was inspired by public
confusion stemming from conflicting information. Dr. Chun took a few calls and described some who dialed in as “panicked.” “People who reached out to the hotline worry about themselves. They worry about their employees. They worry about their business. In their conversations with us, we explained what to do because many times they were reading things that they didn’t understand.”
Translating community fears and internalizing a responsibility to make a difference resonated in every corner of HPH and with every employee. Primary care physicians and urgent care doctors were volunteering to be hospitalists at Straub; innovative medical teams engineered a model to expand the use of one ventilator to support four patients at once; and information technology specialists designed 3D printed face shields and then recruited local schools to help provide additional materials. For many, it’s brought the best out of their expertise and humanity.

Lifesaving Treatment
COVID-19 survivor George Ma credits Straub Medical Center for saving his life. The 46-year-old fitness trainer still can’t comprehend how he went from multiple workouts a day to barely being able to take a breath. “It feels like you’re drowning,” George said. Nine days after his diagnosis, George's hours-long coughing fits left him struggling to breathe; he was rushed to Straub's Emergency Department. A chest X-ray confirmed that his lungs were filled with lacy white streaks, a sign of COVID-19 pneumonia that causes severe breathing problems.
“I thought about throwing in the towel because the pain was unbearable,” George said. “During my recovery, the staff was very patient with me. Straub’s team showed true compassion.” George spent 12 days at Straub undergoing
multiple treatments for the new coronavirus including convalescent plasma therapy. It’s the transfusion of blood donated by people who have recovered from COVID-19 that helps others with the virus to recover.
Since returning home, he’s made a lot of progress but George still deals with lingering symptoms including fatigue, hiccups while breathing, insomnia and, at times, the inability to concentrate. But his determination to help those who cared for him continues on. From his hospital bed, he asked his friends and family to donate to Straub and his story still inspires gifts in his honor. “The main reason why I wanted to donate is that many nurses in the COVID unit volunteer to work there,” George said. “It takes a great amount of courage to fight on the front lines, caring for patients and putting your own life at risk. Mahalo to the staff at Straub for your brave work.”
Answering the Call
For some local physicians, the desperate need in other Mainland cities called them to serve. Dr. Andrew Summersgill felt compelled to go to New York City to support colleagues and friends who he had trained with at Lincoln Medical Center. “It was good to be there to help shoulder some of the burden that they were experiencing,” Dr. Summersgill said. “That's what our career asks of us and people really stepped up to take care of our community.”
The Pali Momi Medical Center emergency doctor volunteered to treat coronavirus patients for three weeks at the Bronx hospital. Although he had worked in Pali Momi’s Command Center, he found that his 12-hour work days in New York gave him a different perspective unlike anything he had experienced before.
“It really hit home to me how real the disease was,” Dr. Summersgill said. “People were dying and people were really sick but it was

helpful to see that we were able to care for these patients and we could do so safely.”
Giving for COVID19 Relief Efforts
Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg, both part-time residents of Kilauea, made a generous gift to Wilcox Medical Center as part of a $1 million donation toward COVID-19 relief on Kaua`i for health care, food security, rent assistance, education and other essential needs.
"People and organizations are stepping up in extraordinary ways to prevent the spread of this virus and support one another," Dr. Chan said. "We’re grateful for all that our partners are doing, and we’re glad to support their work on Kaua`i."
"This donation to Wilcox for COVID-19 relief efforts will significantly impact our work as we fight to protect everyone on Kaua`i from this virus," said Jen H. Chahanovich, president and CEO of Wilcox Medical Center and CEO of Kaua‘i Medical Clinic.
Among the donations for COVID-19 relief efforts, a few major gifts benefitted all four HPH facilities. Those Hawai‘i Pacific Health system supporters include UHA Health Insurance, Harry and Nee Chang Wong Foundation and Farmers Insurance.
Virtual Visits
Stay-at-home orders didn’t stop regular appointments for Emalia Pietsch Hogan’s young son, Keahi, with the Rehabilitation Department at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.
“Even when COVID hit, restricting in-person access at Kapi‘olani, we never missed a beat because we were then able to connect virtually,” Emalia said.
Consistent speech therapy is necessary for Keahi to maintain his progress. His family found the virtual visits also created a new window of opportunity for experts to gain even more insight about their toddler. “When our 3-year-old was about done with his portion of the visit his therapist would observe him playing in the room and give my husband and me more ideas on what to do to help him at home.”
The experience has changed the family’s approach to medicine for Keahi and his sister, Elia. “If my kid has a fever or my kid has an earache, or whatever it is, I have been able to work with our kids’ doctors to do everything telehealth,” Emalia said. “It’s been phenomenal.”
As the pandemic continues, Hawai‘i Pacific Health remains open to this shift in health care delivery. Telemedicine is here to stay and will continue to evolve so video visits, phone conversations and online scheduling can connect a greater number of patients with those who provide care. The public is seeking information and answers about various infectious diseases more than ever before. There's also an interest in the long-term psychological impact of COVID-19 and addresing that need. “While we are physically distanced, hopefully we’re socially connected so we can stay healthier together,” Dr. Ashton said. We may now have a masked view of the world but the fight against COVID-19 is all of ours. No matter what comes next.

THE GIFT OF A GRANT
TAYLOR-MADE KINDNESS
Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children is thankful for Hawai‘i’s young philanthropists who are using their time and talent to raise money for the community. Eight-year-old Taylor Nakahara helped sell fabric masks her grandmother made and donated the proceeds to Kapi‘olani. Along with the $1,000 she raised, Taylor also gave the medical center 25 custom-made fabric masks for pediatric patients. Taylor, you are a shining example of how kids can help kids as one of our #Keiki4Kapiolani!
Servco Foundation drove in some serious support for Kapi‘olani Medical Center with a $15,000 donation through Servco’s Community Grant Program. “During times like these, we all need to step up to support those impacted,” said Peter Hirano, executive director of the Servco Foundation. “With these grants, we wanted to recognize and show our support for some of the many organizations statewide who continue to do important work throughout the state during this time.”

INVESTMENT IN SAFETY
When patients arrive to the Pali Momi Medical Center Women’s Center, they are greeted by a new screener, thanks to the Women’s Fund of Hawai‘i. The stand-alone infrared thermometer was paid for by the local grant-making foundation that is dedicated exclusively to supporting women and girls in Hawai‘i. The device will be stationed at the Women’s Center entrance, meaning the nurse that had been taking temperatures of visitors can return to patient care.

SCOOPS OF SUPPORT

Baskin-Robbins ‘Aiea really delivered when it came to flavorful frozen treats for Pali Momi Medical Center. The neighboring small business donated 760 scoops of ice cream—in flavors ranging from cake frosting to raspberry chocolate swirl—for Pali Momi’s employees. Baskin-Robbins ‘Aiea’s owner, Dennis Tsukaka, said it was his way of honoring Hawai‘i’s health care workers one scoop at a time.

PHYSICIAN GIVING FOR PPE
If anyone knows the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the fight against COVID-19, it is Hawai‘i’s frontline workers. Straub Medical Center Emergency Department physician Dr. Monte Elias donated $10,000 to purchase PPE for Straub. “With this new coronavirus, I think an acute need is getting supplies to the staff whose lives are at risk," Dr. Monte Elias explained. Dr. Elias wanted to ensure his colleagues stay safe and hopes it will inspire others to give back as well.

PAY CUT FOR POSITIVE CHANGE

Straub Medical Center is grateful for BlackSand Capital’s $10,000 gift to the medical center’s COVID-19 Relief Efforts Fund. BlackSand Capital CEO BJ Kobayashi and his team made a commitment to donate to local organizations, including Straub, to strengthen the community’s fight against the pandemic both physically and economically. The idea came from BlackSand Capital Chief of Staff, Will Nguyen, who offered to take a generous pay cut to make a positive change during these uncertain times.

INSPIRED NEW PURPOSE
Kamanu Composites found a meaningful way to support Kaua‘i’s health care heroes! The O‘ahu-based canoe manufacturer produced face shields in response to COVID-19 and donated them to various organizations, including 55 face shields to Wilcox. “It’s a world away from the canoes we usually build, but nothing we make has felt more important,” said Keizo Gates, Kamanu Composites co-founder and partner. “We are proud to use our local manufacturing ability to fill a small hole in a temporarily broken global supply chain.”

COLLABORATIVE EFFORT
The Kaua‘i Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Advisory Council spread a lot of aloha with its National Day of Service and Remembrance service project. The group created 350 care packages that were assembled by volunteers with items donated by the community, including homemade treats like kūlolo, for staff at Wilcox Medical Center and medical facilities across Kaua‘i. “The contributions, many being done by appointment and drive-through drop offs, were overwhelming,” said Kealoha Takahashi, the executive for the county’s Agency on Elderly Affairs that oversees the Kaua‘i RSVP.

Navigating Cancer Care
RICK HOBSON HAS A PASSION FOR HAWAIIAN CANOE PADDLING THAT HAS EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS FROM PADDLING TO CANOE BUILDING.
“I grew up the son of a carpenter so it just was natural for me to get involved with it,” Rick said.
He was first inspired to try his hand at canoe craftsmanship by Tai Perry, a
friend whom he describes as a father figure. Rick completed his first Moloka‘i Channel crossing with Tai, then began by shadowing the third-generation canoe builder.
“I became his apprentice,” Rick said. “It was a lot of hard work every weekend in between canoe races. I loved it.”
Then all of the time he put into sanding and shaping a boat came to an abrupt stop. In 2018, Rick underwent a routine
endoscopic procedure where doctors found a tumor at the bottom of his esophagus that was putting pressure on his organs. He had esophageal cancer.
Rick was in disbelief. “I was an avid canoe paddler for the last 22 years and I was in really good shape. I don't smoke. I don't drink. I mean how could I get cancer?”
Soon family and friends were rallying around Rick, some even offered to help him travel for lifesaving treatment.

“I called a buddy of mine who had cancer and was going to fly me out to a hospital on the Mainland,” Rick said. “I told him ‘I'm staying home,’ there’s no reason this can't be done here.”
The West O‘ahu resident chose to receive care close to home at the Hawai‘i Pacific Health Cancer Center at Pali Momi Medical Center where he received his intravenous infusions of cancer-fighting drugs. It wasn’t easy. Rick says the treatment wreaked havoc on his veins. He credits the caring nurses at the infusion center for helping him get through it. “I’m so thankful I was here and I’m so thankful that the Pali Momi facility was practically brand new,” Rick said. “All the people there were perfect.”
Rick and his wife, Janet, felt a special bond with Noelani “Noe” McGuire. Noelani is the patient navigator for cancer care at Pali Momi and supports families dealing with cancer. The patient navigator provides insight

to treatment, connects patients to medical teams and coordinates tests, and offers social and emotional comfort through one-on-one or group meetings with other cancer survivors.
“Noe spoke on a deep level to me, somebody who she didn't know, and allowed me to share,” Janet said. “She responded in a way that made me feel heard when no one else could understand what I was going through. It was different than what Rick was going through.”
“Pali Momi has a cancer support group,” Rick said. “At the meeting, Noe connected us with a guy there who had the exact same surgery I needed, which is pretty rare. My wife was also able to talk to his wife about what to expect and what they went through. It was very helpful.”
The infusions were just a first step. Next, Straub Medical Center surgeons Dr. Ayman Abdul-Ghani and Dr.
Gregorio Maldini removed the cancerous junction between the stomach and the esophagus.
The recovery is a lengthy process. A year after surgery, Rick still has to monitor what he eats and must sleep in an elevated sitting position. But he’s been able to return to some of his favorite hobbies including surfing and paddling. He’s also considering finally finishing a fishing canoe he was carving from a 22-foot log that washed up on the beach.
“This canoe kind of represents what it takes to get through cancer,” Rick said. “You know, it's similar because when I say I'm building the boat, it's not true—so many people are building that boat with me. I have a great wife. I have a great family. I have a great team of professionals at Pali Momi and because of all of them I came out on the other side of this diagnosis. ”

Nice To Be Your Neighbor

PALI MOMI MEDICAL CENTER IS ONE OF PATRICIA KURISU’S FAMILY’S MOST VALUABLE NEIGHBORS.
Patricia settled in ‘Aiea in 1977 because it was a great place for her growing family. “When we moved into our new place, my daughter was about a year old so we wanted a threebedroom house.”
Their new neighborhood had all they needed. When it came to health care, the humble Fronk Clinic was just minutes away in wooden structures along Moanalua Road. “I remember when I had to take my daughter to the doctor and it wasn't a hospital, but it was just like model home units,” Patricia said. “It was a really basic facility [for moments] like when my daughter got her finger caught in the car door and we would take her down.” At the time,

medical practices in ‘Aiea were considered “rural care,” but that would change in the late 1980s as a bigger and bolder facility took shape. Dr. Joseph Nishimoto spent years leading a grassroots movement to build a hospital for families in his area of Pearl City. In 1989, his years of work paid off when the $120 million Pali Momi Medical Center opened on a four-acre lot. It was the first full-service hospital near Central and West O‘ahu. “We needed a hospital on this side,” Patricia said. “You know what it’s like to travel into town? Even back then if it was a real critical situation, there wasn't a good option.”
The community has attracted tens of thousands of more families and continues to grow, making the presence of the medical center even more vital. For Patricia and her family, who witnessed Pali Momi’s growth from construction to comprehensive award-winning facility, the medical center has always been an invaluable resource for the community.
“I've been hospitalized at Pali Momi and I’m thankful for the care,” said Patricia, who has been donating for decades to all the departments that have cared for her. “I was at the Emergency Department when I lost vision in my left eye and I go for my mammograms at the Women's Center, so I designate funds to those areas. Dr. Huidy Shu is also my neurologist, so I wanted to donate to the stroke program.”
It’s a very personal investment for Patricia and her growing family, including her two daughters and three grandchildren.
“I'm glad we have a great hospital that’s right here, because if my grandkids get sick and have to go to the emergency department, they go to Pali Momi,” she said. ”I really appreciate all they do. They really took good care of me.”

Changing the World for the Better
JENNIFER GROSS WAS A TEENAGER WHEN HER FATHER, WILLIAM “BILL” GROSS, WAS BUILDING HIS SUCCESSFUL INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT FIRM AND INTRODUCED HER TO CHARITABLE GIVING. He decided to become a philanthropist and thought his kids should help him determine where donations should go. And that’s exactly what they did together. “It's been a process for the entire family to experience by giving to people every year,” Jennifer said. “I think we've definitely grown closer together as a family, as a result of it.”
The gifts from the William, Jeff and Jennifer Gross Family Foundation have now grown to millions of dollars annually. In 2019, the foundation gave $19.5 million to 45 not-for-profit groups across the globe. Last year, Wilcox Medical Center on Kaua‘i received the largest gift of $2.75 million.
“Good health care begins and ends with the systems around it that bring in the
medical staff, funding and materials needed to ensure high quality care and access to cutting-edge research,” Jennifer said. “It’s not enough to think about our local hospital as a standalone project. I think it's important to think of it as the branch of a tree that succeeds or fails based on the strength of its roots. I hope this gift will not only strengthen Wilcox Medical Center’s example as a leading hospital in Hawai‘i but also serve as an example for how to optimize health care in other islands around the world.”
The Gross family is committed to meaningful causes with a focus on humanitarian efforts, education and health care. The generous gift made by the family foundation supports Wilcox's current fundraising campaign to upgrade its Emergency Department and expand its trauma services. For Jennifer, giving to medicine reminds her of her mom, Pamela Roberts, who spent 45 years working in an intensive care unit.
“She told me so many stories about the life-threatening situations she saw people in daily,” Jennifer said. “She taught me how essential it is for all people to have equal access to outstanding care in their most critical moments. And that outstanding care depends on access to funding.”

Jennifer and her husband, Peter Stengaard, visited with Wilcox staff and toured the trauma center that will bear their name. Wilcox is Kaua‘i's only Level III Trauma Center and was the first neighbor

island medical center to achieve that designation. It is also Hawai‘i’s first Level III Trauma Center to be verified by the American College of Surgeons.
“Kaua’i is a small community where health care can be so much more personal than in larger areas,” Peter said. “You probably already know many of the patients that come through Wilcox’s doors by first name. This makes it particularly powerful to improve what Wilcox can do for its patients. I just think that it is really cool to make this gift to Wilcox so it can, in turn, gift better health to the Kaua’i community.”
About $4.3 million of the $5 million goal has been raised. The money will create two trauma resuscitation suites as well as renovate specialty spaces for behavioral
health, infectious control, pediatric rooms and OB-GYN care. There are also plans to convert semi-private observation bays to private treatment exam rooms.
“The generosity of the William, Jeff and Jennifer Gross Foundation will greatly impact the health and well-being of the residents and visitors of Kaua‘i,” said Jen Chahanovich, president and CEO of Wilcox Medical Center and CEO of Kaua‘i Medical Clinic. “The Gross family gift will help us expand our facilities and invest in new technologies and equipment that will benefit Kaua‘i families for generations to come."
This community investment also provides comfort to the couple. They
are part-time Garden Island residents. Jennifer spent her summers on Kaua‘i since she was 6 years old and later introduced island living to Peter. They spent their honeymoon there and return on a regular basis to relax and visit with friends. After settling in to their new home on the North Shore of Kaua‘i, they were motivated to find out more about Wilcox and were pleased with what they learned.
“Health care centers like Wilcox Medical Center are on the frontlines of impact where you can literally see the face of change from day-to-day,” Jennifer said. “There’s nothing more powerful than that, especially in our small Kaua’i community.”

Care that Comes with Kindness
RICK AND KAY CARLISLE
ARE ENERGETIC SENIORS. On a trip with their grandchildren they walked an average of 15,000 steps every day. When they visited Kaua‘i for their nephew’s 50th birthday, they went snorkeling, hiking and ventured around on an all-terrain vehicle tour. “I guess we’re active for people in their late 60s,” Kay said.
It was during that ATV tour that they were invited to swim in a pool under a waterfall. Rick saw people jumping off a ledge into the water below and decided to take the three-foot plunge. When he went to leap again, he lost his footing on the wet rocks and stuck out his hand to protect his head. “I didn’t realize that I cut my hand until somebody told me my hand was bleeding,” he said.
An emergency medical technician who was on the tour bandaged Rick’s hand so he could finish the ATV ride. Later, he went to an urgent care clinic where he received
six stitches. Two days later, he had a fever and the wound looked worse. This time, when he returned to the urgent care clinic, they sent him to the Emergency Department at Wilcox Medical Center. Ninety minutes later, he was in surgery.
“It was so deep of a cut that it was infected badly,” Rick said. “They went in and cleaned it out. In fact two days later they had to go back in and clean it out again.”
Rick was given antibiotics to fight the infection. But it had a dangerous side effect. The day he was set to be released, the Wilcox team discovered that the medicine had affected his kidneys. They kept him so a team of specialists could monitor him for another week. “Between the surgeon, the hospitalist and the infectious disease specialist, we had three doctors come and see him every day,” Kay said. “Even when things weren’t going well, their encouragement was uplifting.”
Dr. Katalin Terdik, a Wilcox hospitalist, visiting with Rick and Kay Carlisle during his treatment at Wilcox Medical Center.
Rick has returned to South Carolina and doctors there have been impressed by his recovery and surgery. “The hand surgeon was somewhat shocked that there wasn't damage to my hand,” Rick said. “They said Dr. Carnegie [the surgeon] had done a very good job because she went through the web part of the finger.”
The Carlisles expressed their gratitude with a donation to Wilcox in honor of their caregivers. Enclosed with their check was a thank you letter addressed to the 13 staff members they remembered. Along with Dr. Alyssa Carnegie, Dr. Katalin Terdik and Dr. Heidi Hillesland, Kay made sure to mention Virgie, the front desk worker who volunteered to help Kay return her rental car after her shift was over.
As the Carlisles wrote in their letter, they truly appreciated the “quality of care and the amount of kindness shown by all of the staff.”

Commitment to Cancer Care
IF THERE WAS ONE PLACE THAT BARRY M. AND VIRGINIA S. WEINMAN BELIEVE CONNECTS THEM AS A COUPLE, IT WOULD BE HAWAI‘I. After all, it is where their love story began in the 1960s. “We met in Hawai‘i when I was at the University of Hawai‘i and he was a junior officer in the Navy,” Virginia said. They would marry in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Chapel and celebrate with a l ‘au that included hula dancers. After living in cities around the world, the Weinmans settled in Silicon Valley in thriving fields. Barry was a venture capitalist and Virginia worked in the computer industry.
The Weinmans returned to Hawai‘i annually for 35 years. Yet, when they started to think about retirement, the Islands were not their first thought. “We drew maps of where we could live by deciding that it had to be close to the water and have a decent temperature,” Barry said. “We came up with a crazy city somewhere deep into California.” They visited that city one day and found themselves traveling down some dirt roads and passing only one general store. “At that point we’d say to each other, ‘Hey, we met in Hawai‘i. It's such a great place. Why don't we go there?’”
he said. So they did. It’s been decades since that turning point, a decision they’ve never regretted.
And Hawai‘i has benefitted from their move. The Weinmans have celebrated their new home with generous acts of philanthropy. Their most recent gift was a $1 million donation to Straub Medical Center to further develop its cancer care research. It’s the most significant gift for cancer care at Straub ever received and will help expand local clinical trials at the medical center while making it possible for more cancer patients in Hawai‘i to receive experimental treatment.
“Clinical trials in Hawai‘i are very important to the people of Hawai‘i,” Virginia said. “Sufferers of cancer often need to leave the Islands to participate in clinical trials on the Mainland that sometimes will determine the outcome of their cancer. Not only does this inconvenience burden patients financially, but it also takes them away from their family and support groups for weeks, months or longer.”
Approximately 6,700 people are diagnosed with cancer every year in Hawai‘i. The Weinmans’ donation will allow more people from different backgrounds, including often
underserved minorities, the opportunity to be included in these studies.
“Hawai‘i has a unique population,” said Dr. Ian Okazaki, chief of HematologyOncology for Hawai‘i Pacific Health Medical Group. “The ethnic and racial mix is diverse unlike any other place in the nation. There are so many genetic variations and environmental variations that if we don't open clinical trials up to populations like we have in Hawai‘i, we'll never learn the best way to approach these individual situations. We want to be at the pulse of that research for an ethnic population that might get missed and an island community that doesn’t want to go far away for care. We know there is a need for this and we want more local people to have options.”
Ongoing research improves prevention, detection, treatment and quality of life for the cancer community. Part of the goal is to provide multifaceted care, medical team coordination and research in one location at Straub. Dr. Okazaki will be the principal investigator for this cancer treatment expansion. In support of Dr. Okazaki’s research and clinical trials, a portion of the Weinmans’ funding will establish operational resources at Straub including advanced training for the

medical staff, pharmacy upgrades and dedicated space in the infusion center for patient testing and monitoring.
At the Weinman check presentation, oncology team members received a blessing for their continued commitment to cancer care.

The couple has been investing in efforts to find a cure for cancer for years. They even host an annual Barry and Virginia Weinman Symposium with the University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center, an international conference where science and medicine experts from around the world share their latest discoveries.
But a few years ago, Virginia learned firsthand about the care Straub provides. She was diagnosed with stage 3C ovarian cancer, which means cancer cells had spread to both ovaries, fallopian tubes or in organs beyond the pelvis. Dr. Okazaki was her oncologist. “We're very impressed with Straub,” Virginia said. “I love my doctors, my nurses and the whole oncology department. Dr. Okazaki is always looking for the best treatment.”
“It used to be theoretical to us, cancer is something that needs to be addressed and therefore we started funding this symposium,” said Barry. “Then Virginia had ovarian cancer, she had tough times. We both had to live through what she went through. Virginia was fortunate
enough that she could get into clinical trials and we'd like to see everybody have that same opportunity.”
The new Weinman funding for cancer research at Straub will also strengthen and grow Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s ongoing partnership with the University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center.
“People are living longer lives from successful cancer treatments that are the results of past clinical trials,” Virginia said. “Doctors determine whether new treatments are safe and effective and work better than current treatments. Clinical trials also help us find new ways to prevent and detect cancer.”
For Barry and Virginia, giving to improve the quality of life for others is a personal commitment that has become a lasting value in their marriage. “Everybody at some point in their life needs health care and you should give money to help some body,” Barry said. “This is our passion.”

Passion for the Cause
OFTEN THE FIRST ON THE SCENE OF AN EMERGENCY, FIREFIGHTERS PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.
Straub Medical Center is fortunate and grateful to count these heroes as partners. Since 2009, the Honolulu Firefighters Foundation (HFF) has donated $150,000 in grants to the Straub Burn Center.
The foundation held its 10th Annual Signature Chefs Food Festival at the Honolulu Fire Department headquarters. This special fundraiser featured live local entertainment as well as top local chefs and dishes by some of Honolulu’s own firefighters. The Straub Burn Center team had the opportunity to share with festival participants the impact that the firefighters’ grant funding has made.
Bobby Lee, president of the Honolulu Firefighters Foundation, said Straub is one of several beneficiaries of the fun
evening. “From installing thousands of smoke alarms in the homes of O‘ahu’s kupuna at no cost, to funding upgrades to the Straub Burn Center, this event has helped save countless lives.”
“In Hawai‘i we are fortunate that the Straub Burn Center was established in 1983 to provide specialized care,” said Kimberly Webster, burn unit supervisor and critical care intermediate unit supervisor for Straub Medical Center. “Before that, critical burn patients were transferred to the Mainland, further delaying urgent treatment. To this day we remain committed to being the only burn center in Hawai‘i and the Pacific region. The foundation’s grant funding to the Straub Foundation has allowed us to add state-of-the-art equipment and services that help our patients to survive some of the most severe burns.”
Contributions from the Honolulu

Firefighters Foundation have paid for equipment, including: a blanket warmer; a portable patient lift system; an advanced handwashing station, extremely important for preventing infection that is unique to the Burn Unit; a state-of-the-art handheld shower system; and a specialized burn care mattress that relieves pressure on the skin and redistributes weight to help alleviate pain.
Straub’s advanced burn care goes beyond the walls of the medical center. The grant also funds burn education training for the Straub burn team, first responders and the community. Participants learn from the Honolulu Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services as well as join specialized training in Hawai‘i with an expert from the American Burn Association.
About the Straub Burn Center
The Straub Burn Center first opened its doors in March 1983. It began with three monitored beds for kids as young as 7 to adults dealing with injuries ranging from minor hand burns to major burns. In 2019, the center cared for more than 140 patients. The multidisciplinary team includes specially trained plastic surgeons, registered nurses, physical therapists, dieticians and social workers.

Carol Jones cuddling a baby in the Kapi‘olani Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in 2018.
The Baby Cuddler
CAROL JONES HAS BEEN COMFORTING, HOLDING AND ROCKING PREMATURE BABIES AT KAPI‘OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN FOR YEARS. She first read about the program at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in 2012 and has been helping ever since.
The first step was training. Volunteers need to understand everything from how to work with the nurse to the proper way to sit in a chair with a baby. “We started by learning how to hold baby dolls,” Carol said. She enjoyed the tips. “I was not used to holding a baby at that point because our son was at that time in his late 20s.”
Still, Carol was a natural cuddler and families appreciate her loving care of their precious new infants. One mother even had Carol cuddle her child for three-and-a-half hours so she could pump breast milk and focus on herself for a while. It’s a trust that Carol never takes for granted. “It's very satisfying to have a parent come in and say, ‘the baby is so relaxed, just keep on holding it.’”
An infant born underweight or prematurely may need to stay for days, weeks or months in the Kapi‘olani NICU. The average stay for babies who weigh less than 3.3 pounds is 66 days. A good number of those long-term babies may have parents who are working, live

on a neighbor island or are waiting for placement in foster care. That’s when Carol feels her work is most meaningful. “There's nobody coming to visit them,” Carol said. “There are times when the doctor says to the nurse ‘make sure that baby's held because that baby needs to be held.’”
When Carol has babies in her arms, she often tells them about her “babies” at home—her foster cats. She and her husband, Larry, have taken care of more than 700 cats over time. Yet, they make sure to hold each one close during the week they have them, caring for them just as she cares for Kapi‘olani’s babies. “We once had a foster cat that was only 20 ounces,” Carol said. “I asked a nurse, what is the smallest baby you've tended to? She told me 14 ounces. I would never hold a 14-ounce baby, but I can relate.”
Larry and Carol give in other ways. They started by funding a respiratory therapy workroom in the NICU in honor of Kapi‘olani respiratory therapist Laura Masuda. Their commitment continues, this year the couple donated in honor of Kapi‘olani’s New Pediatric Heart Center by naming a conference room in the dining room. Carol says they will continue to look for ways to help in any way they can. “We give where we feel the money is going to be used.”

A Place for Food, Family & Comfort
THE NEWEST SPACE FOR FAMILIES TO GATHER AT KAPI‘OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN IS BUILT ON THE GENEROSITY OF TWO MEN. The new dining room was significantly funded by Bert A. Kobayashi Sr., founder and senior advisor of the Kobayashi Group, and Dr. Thomas Kosasa, obstetrics and gynecology specialist at Kapi‘olani. The close friends share a giving history at Kapi‘olani that spans two decades.
“We have a real close connection because our families go way back,” Dr. Kosasa said. “I've always admired Bert. It's really special that together our families contributed to this beautiful facility.”
As part of the continued build-out of the Diamond Head Tower, the Kobayashi & Kosasa Family Dining Room opened to the public at the end of 2019. The space features a 9,000-square-foot kitchen and 14,000-square-foot dining room which is three times larger than the previous cafeteria. The new dining

room also seats up to 227 people, has seven new serving areas with a variety of food options including pizza and a salad bar, and a full-service licensed Starbucks.
“When you are sick and not feeling well, you want comfort food that makes you happy,” Bert said. “That’s what this facility is going to do for people who are sick or hurting and their families.”
Other features of the Kobayashi & Kosasa Family Dining Room include three new conference rooms, a 1,800-square-foot outdoor l nai, an interactive Keiki Zone play area, free Wi-Fi and cell phone charging stations.
Besides the new dining room, the Kobayashi and Kosasa families also contributed to the Campaign for Hawai‘i’s Children to fund the construction of the Diamond Head Tower at Kapi‘olani, an endeavor Bert led as campaign chair for fundraising.
Strength of Sisterhood
ASK TAMMIE MIURA'S SISTERS TO DESCRIBE HER AND THEY WILL BOTH SAY ONE WORD: FIGHTER. It began when she was in elementary school. "For a long time she would have fevers and a lot of bruising," older sister Tracie Alexander said. At the age of 10, Tammie was diagnosed with leukemia. That's when her cancer journey at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children began.
Tammie started treatment but soon a test revealed another challenge. She needed a bone marrow transplant. Fortunately, with the help of her sister, she was able to quickly go into surgery. "We were very lucky I was a bone marrow match for her," Tracie said. “Seeing how the nurses made Tammie feel made me want to help others to feel good,” said Tracie, who became a pediatric oncology nurse.
Despite a successful transplant, her sister suffered another setback. After living cancer-free for 11 years, a tumor appeared in Tammie’s
leg and she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. This time Tracie was working at Kapi‘olani in the unit where Tammie would soon be a patient. Even when her body weakened, Tammie maintained enough mental toughness for the whole family. At times she was the one reassuring them that she could handle another round of chemo. “I just knew she was going to fight no matter what,” said her younger sister, Tricia. “I think a lot of times it was for us.”
Tammie overcame cancer yet again, and her experiences as a child in the hospital influenced what she tackled next. She enrolled in graduate school to pursue a career as a child life therapist. Soon she was volunteering at Kapi‘olani. “She was so perfect, because she had gone through it so she knew what to do and what to say,” Tricia said.
But during her studies at Gonzaga University, the young woman who had fought through so much was

diagnosed with a brain tumor. It would be her last fight against cancer. While Tammie is gone, the Miura family believes her life continues to serve a great purpose. “I truly believe that I am living out her legacy though my work in nursing,” Tracie said, “and I cannot imagine doing anything else or being anywhere else than where I am today.”
The girls’ parents, Debra and Patrick Miura, honored Tammie with a gift to Kapi‘olani. The Miuras donated $12,000 which included gifts from their family and Debra and Patrick’s employers, First Insurance and Elite Mechanical. “Part of the money from us was some of Tammie’s savings,” Debra said. “We wanted to put it to good use.”
The day was emotional, but also provided comfort and healing. The occasion reconnected the family with doctors and nurses who meant so much to Tammie throughout her life. “The staff was like our second family, I really did live here whenever Tammie was here,” Debra said. “You know I don't cry that often these days, but today was a good feeling.”

A Champion Who Never Gives Up
2020 Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network Champion Haumea Friel
HAUMEA FRIEL
ISN’T YOUR TYPICAL 6-YEAR-OLD. She may be young, but she is strong, confident and often says, “I never give up!” Her easy radiant smile does not reflect her remarkable journey.
Before Haumea was born, tests revealed she had a rare birth defect known as proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD) in her right leg. PFFD is a condition where the femur, or thigh bone, is malformed or missing, causing one leg to be shorter than the other. The unexpected news sent her parents, Kainoa and Calen Friel, spinning into a rollercoaster of emotions.
"We were worried because at that point we had nothing to go on,” Kainoa said. “It was a struggle thinking of the unknown. We didn’t know what to think but just prayed for her safety."
The condition only affects about 1 in every 200,000 children. Because of the complexity of PFFD, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Baby Haumea would require the experience of a multidisciplinary team of experts to create a customized plan of care. Fortunately, the Friels had the team at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children from day one.
In her first six years of life, Haumea has undergone 10 surgeries. It’s been a

challenging process for a little girl.
“She first started off with a prosthetic and then when she was 2 years old she had a super hip surgery,” Kainoa said. “In between all of that, she was in a body cast for like six to eight weeks depending on how well the bones knit together. Then she would have to do physical therapy, learn how to walk again, and then the hip surgery wouldn't stick.”
“She would run and have one good step and be like ‘Oh my hip,’” Calen said. “It was probably banging out and then would pop back in.”
Multiple reconstructive hip surgeries didn’t work. Eventually Kapi‘olani orthopedic surgeons Dr. William Burkhalter and Dr. Robert Durkin determined a rare procedure, called rotationplasty, was her only option. The surgery took 16 hours.
“Haumea came in with a very complex problem,” said Dr. Burkhalter. “The rotationplasty basically turns the limb around so that the knee that she has functions as a hip for her and the foot that she has functions as a knee for her that can be fitted for a prosthesis.”
Today Haumea is flourishing. She took a giant leap in her recovery process
Haumea and her parents, Kainoa and Calen Friel.

when she got a prosthetic leg which she’s proudly named Sparkle. It’s a fitting name that matches Haumea’s effervescent personality.
“Sparkle is my prosthetic leg that can help me walk and run and bounce; nothing can stop it,” Haumea said.
Her physical therapy continues to teach Haumea how to walk without assistance. Her ultimate “favorite person,” is “Aunty Stacie.” Stacie Keliinoi leads her physical therapy at Kapi‘olani’s Rehabilitation Department.
“She’s having to deal with her foot now in a new position facing the other way,” said Stacie, a Kapi‘olani physical therapist. “But Haumea just pushed forward. She showed up twice a week to do new things every time with a great attitude. Haumea’s now walking on the treadmill saying, ‘Auntie Stacie, I want to learn how to run.’”

Stacie Keliinoi helps Haumea through physical therapy at Kapi‘olani’s Rehabilitation Department.
Family and friends support Haumea and her parents who were interviewed on KSSK for the Kapi‘olani Radiothon.
Haumea has continuously beat the odds to overcome adversity when it comes to what she calls her “super leg.” It’s for her strength and courage that Haumea was named the 2020 Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Champion for Kapi‘olani in front of hundreds of supporters from across the state at the inaugural CMN Partner Celebration. She’s already an impressive ambassador for Kapi‘olani.
“The progress is incredible,” Dr. Burkhalter said. “This isn't just Haumea, this is Haumea's family. They get that and there's not a sense of ‘why me’ at all.”
CMN partners at the celebration were also the first to receive Haumea’s Champion pin. Haumea designed the purple heart outlined in pink, which are her favorite colors. The glittery purple also matches the color of Haumea’s prosthetic leg “Sparkle.” The heart represents the love that surrounds Haumea from her ‘ohana, while the two
feet facing in opposite directions, on top of the heart, represents her lifechanging rotationplasty surgery.
Her family and their business, Uncle Lani’s Poi Mochi, have a long history of helping to change the lives of local keiki treated at Kapi‘olani.
“I want to say over 10 years now, we've been fundraising for the Children's Miracle Network at Kapi‘olani,” said Haumea’s grandmother, Charmaine Naauao-Ocasek. “Now all of the fundraising that we've done is actually hitting home for us with it helping Haumea.”
Now the girl who spent much of her life in the hospital proudly owns dolls with prosthetic legs, dreams of growing up to work for her family’s mochi-making business and wants to play volleyball.
“Haumea is proud of who she is,” Kainoa said. “She is one of the strongest people I know.”

Three Million Mark
HAWAI‘I WALMART AND SAM’S CLUB STORES ARE CELEBRATING A NEW FUNDRAISING
MILESTONE – The business raised more than $3 million for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children since their Children’s Miracle Network partnership began in 1994. The Pearl City and Hilo Walmart locations were ranked the first and second Walmart stores in 2019, respectively, for fundraising in the entire nation.
“A hospital such as Kapi‘olani is extremely important to us and once you take the tour and get to meet the staff and see what they’re doing to change lives it really affects you,” said Lance McAlister, Walmart Hawai‘i market manager. “It just really pulls at you emotionally to see how our efforts are bettering the lives of keiki here in Hawai‘i.” We are so proud of the Walmart and Sam’s Club associates and grateful to the customers for reaching this incredible achievement in giving!
A Prosperous Partnership
KAPI‘OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN IS PRIVILEGED TO HAVE PANDA RESTAURANT GROUP AS A PARTNER. In 2019, Hawai‘i Panda Express locations raised a record $439,173 for Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network. Most of the money is raised a dollar at a time by associates asking customers if they would like to donate to Kapi‘olani at the register. Samantha Jumawan, a manager from the Pearl City Panda Express location, says each gift benefits not only patients, but her team as well. “It’s true happiness because you had the chance to help and inspire someone to give to children who really need medical support,” Samantha said.
The family-owned business has a culture of giving back. During Chinese New Year, Panda Express shared the red envelope tradition. Associates handed out envelopes of puzzles representing happiness and luck while encouraging donations at the register. The envelope gesture was in hopes of bringing good health to sick and injured kids at Kapi‘olani. Panda Restaurant Group is currently the second highest fundraising corporate partner for Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network.

Inaugural CMN Partner Celebration
KAPI‘OLANI CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK HELD A SUPERSIZED CELEBRATION FOR CORPORATE PARTNERS. Hundreds of representatives from across the state gathered for the inaugural CMN Partner Celebration to applaud milestones and record-breaking fundraising in 2019. The finale of the luncheon was an exclusive reveal of Hawai‘i’s 2020 CMN Champion, Haumea Friel.
“Seeing this many people in here shows that it's not only Costco, but it’s the whole state that’s actually getting involved,” said Brandt Nishimura, Costco Kapolei membership manager. “It’s pretty surprising how many people are here today.” Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network is grateful to the program’s committed partners who make miracles happen for Hawai‘i’s keiki every day through their efforts.

Larger than Life Surprise
THE BACKSTREET BOYS ARE KNOWN FOR THE SHAPE OF THEIR HEARTS. But it is the size of their hearts that they shared during a surprise visit to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, Hawai‘i’s only Children’s Miracle Network hospital. In between Hawai‘i performances of its DNA World Tour, the iconic ‘90s music group met with patients and families at Kapi‘olani.
Band members Nick Carter and Brian Littrell came especially to mark an important medical milestone for a BSB super fan.
Brian and Nick joined Kapi‘olani’s pediatric cancer team for Jordan Ilae’s “end-of-chemo” ceremony. The celebration started with everyone singing “Happy Last Chemo” then Jordan rang a bell in

victory after her final chemotherapy treatment.
Jordan’s medical team and her family say Backstreet Boys songs helped keep her inspired during her more than two-year battle. After chemotherapy, patients need to keep moving to help flush the medicine out of their system. A playlist of the group's music provided the motivation Jordan needed to walk around, or even dance. Her favorite song to play first, and often more than once, was “I Want It That Way.”
“Everybody deserves to hope for something, to believe in something,” Brian said. “We hear a lot of times that Backstreet Boys music has been the soundtrack to so many people’s
lives. It’s why we do it – it blesses us more than it does anybody else.”
The band members also visited nursing staff and spent one-on-one time with patients in their rooms. They even stopped by the Brain Station, an educational program at Kapi‘olani that helps hospitalized kids keep up with schoolwork. The Brain Station lesson that day was about the history of the Backstreet Boys and an explanation of genetic DNA, in honor of the band’s DNA World Tour.
“We get so much out of this,” Nick said. “We have families. We all have children and we’ve been doing this for 26 years. So just to be able to give back and uplift spirits through music, that’s really why we’re here.”

Day of Hope Run
The Annual Day of Hope Run, a signature event for the Four Seasons Resort Maui, is growing in popularity.
“A lot of our guests reach out to us and plan their vacation around this run,” said Karen Costner, event chair and assistant director of finance at the Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea.
As many as 400 people come from the Mainland, neighbor islands or neighborhoods around the island for the annual fundraiser that was initiated by Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts founder Isadore Sharp three decades ago.

Isadore Sharp’s son Christopher died of cancer in 1978. Since then, Sharp has inspired many staff members to join the fight against the disease. Employees dedicate their personal time year-round to help plan it. Event proceeds support Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children and other charities focused on cancer care. The Four Seasons Resort Maui connection to Kapi‘olani, in funding oncology for women and children, started with a significant gift.
“One of our guests donated $10,000 to the children's hospital because his child was going through cancer,” Karen said.
This year, one of the Four Seasons’ own employees became another voice for the cause. Michelle Kemp, an accounts clerk at the resort, says her life was thrown off balance when tests confirmed she had clear cell ovarian cancer. “It was definitely a shock,” the 35-year-old said. “I didn’t see it coming, but I had the support of my friends, family and my Four Seasons ‘ohana, which made a huge difference.”
Every three weeks, Michelle flew from Maui to Kapi‘olani for treatment. “I refused to go anywhere else because I knew the quality of care at Kapi‘olani was just incomparable,” Michelle said.
Michelle Kemp, a Four Seasons Resort Maui employee who was treated for ovarian cancer at Kapi‘olani.

Lots of Aloha at the Big Green Classic
“Nobody even has to ask when it is anymore, they just expect the Big Green Classic to happen the first Saturday of August,” said Jason Kiaha, who co-chairs the event for the Isemoto Contracting Company.
Jason, a Kona field superintendent, and fellow co-chair John Sauer, a foreman, helped create the fishing tournament in 2016. It started as a way for employees from Hilo and Kona to bond.
"Our company is coming up on 100 years soon. It's been familyrun for years so the number one focus is family at Isemoto," Jason said. "We treat everybody like family here."
It was also that sense of ‘ohana that inspired them to use the tournament as a fundraiser for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.
Todd Zane, an operator and truck driver for Isemoto Contracting Company for 20 years, had a daughter who was born prematurely at 28 weeks and needed specialized care at Kapi‘olani. Doctors diagnosed Taira with meningitis, a swelling of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord that is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection.
“She’s been through maybe eight or nine brain surgeries already to drain it out,” Todd said. “That’s why I was for this. I see a lot of kids go through there. We’re lucky we have Kapi‘olani.”
Overall, the tournament's cumulative proceeds of $13,700 have benefited the Critical Care Transport program, a vital means of transporting very sick children across the state to Kapi‘olani for care. The one-day event includes eight hours of fishing with an average of 35 boats filled with participants.
“Right now the perpetual trophy is in Hilo, but it was in Kona for three years before,” John said. “So where the trophy goes just adds to the fun. But mostly everyone knows it’s for the kids.”

Impressionable Handprints
A colorful handprint ceremony by patients of Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children made for a beautiful display of the hopes and dreams of hospitalized keiki.

Hyundai Hope On Wheels, supported by Hyundai and its U.S. dealers, invited the kids to put their handprints on one of their official vehicles as part of a special celebration in honor of Dr. Randall K. Wada. Dr. Wada received a $100,000 Hyundai Impact Award Grant to help Kapi‘olani continue its long-standing fight against pediatric cancer.
"The uniqueness of each handprint and to have the kids create their own mark, there is a lot of symbolism in it and the kids had fun," said Stan Masamitsu, dealer principal for Tony Honda.
“Our team at Kapi‘olani makes every effort to deliver the best medical options for our local kids right here in the islands, and this funding will allow us to develop a critical new supportive

care modality for our pediatric transplant patients,” said Dr. Wada, who is medical director of Kapi‘olani’s pediatric stem cell transplant program, the only one of its kind in the state.
“In 2018, I became a bone marrow transplant recipient,” said Robyn Ribac, a Kapi‘olani cancer patient. “Thankfully my little brother Ranger was able to give me some of his bone marrow, so without Hyundai’s funds I wouldn’t be feeling as well as I do right now.”
Hyundai has reached $160 million in total lifetime funding since it began giving to efforts to find a cure in 1998, including $665,000 to Kapi‘olani.
Iron Man Effort for Babies
Leonardo "Trey" Valdez has spent the majority of his nursing career working in neonatal intensive care units (NICU), including four years at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. Trey, who now lives in California, returned for his very first Ironman 70.3 race. It’s half the distance of the Ironman Triathlon but is still a brutal trek.
It took him 6 hours and 48 minutes to complete the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bicycle ride and 13.1-mile run as a fundraiser for Hawai‘i’s keiki.
The Valdez family visited Kapi‘olani to donate the hard-earned total of $4,125 to

help premature babies. “For about four months, the money was raised little by little anywhere from $5 to $1,000 from one donor,” Trey said. “Nothing compares to the standard of care at Kapi‘olani along with the comradery and aloha spirit,” Trey said. “I’m proud to give back to the community and the families here.”

Drive for Heart Care
JN Group, Inc. revved up its fundraising engines for a cause close to the hearts of employees and customers. At the check presentation, staff members held up 20 red hearts, each signifying $1,000 raised for the pediatric heart care program at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. The $20,000 donation came from a portion of sales during JN Group’s “Drive for Heart Care” campaign. For the month of February in 2019, JN Group donated $100 to Kapi‘olani for every new vehicle or motorcycle purchased at all JN Group facilities, including Velocity and Cycle City.
Brad Nicolai, president of JN Group, Inc., and his father Joe Nicolai.
Brad Nicolai, president of JN Group, Inc. credits his dad, Joe Nicolai, for creating a culture of giving for employees. It started nearly six decades ago when his father was just starting his career by selling consignment cars in 1961. “We’ve been here for 59 years and it’s a testament to all of our employees who make it happen every single day,” Brad said. “From a family standpoint and a business standpoint, I want to sincerely thank our customers, the community and our employees for making this gift to Kapi‘olani possible.”
The JN Group’s latest gift to Kapi‘olani will support pediatric heart patients. Heart defects are the most common birth disorder affecting nearly 1% of births annually.

Building a Healthier Future
The Hawai‘i Building & Construction Trades Council wants to help build a healthier tomorrow for our keiki. The council, which is made up of 15 subcontractor unions for tradesmen ranging from brick layers to painters, donated $50,000 to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. Many of the affiliated unions’ members constructed Kapi‘olani’s Diamond Head Tower. That is when they learned of the need for ongoing support of pediatric medicine. “Many of us either were born there or have kids or grandkids who have been born at Kapi‘olani,” said Damien Kim, president of the Council. "The care they give our kids in Hawai‘i is the best around.”

The Playbook for Giving
Some young local football players truly have their heart in the game of giving! For the past three years, the Leeward Spartans have made an annual gift in honor of a close friend, Kalā Peter, to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. Kalā passed away in 2017 from osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. “I get the whole team involved because I want them to understand that there are others out there that don’t have the healthy ability that they have to go out and play,” said Head Coach Dean Bayot. “I don’t want the players to take that for granted.”
Two of the team's players, Orion Bayot and John De La Cruz, met Kalā in the seventh grade. The three loved to ride their bikes and play video games.
After his death, Orion and John wore stickers with Kalā's name on it on their helmets. "I wear the number 30 because Kalā was born on the 30th and I wanted to represent him," John said. Vance Peter and Kainani Enos-Peter, Kalā’s parents expressed their appreciation at the check presentation. “We are touched and grateful that the coaches and team continue to remember Kalā in this way,” Kainani said. “We are so proud of these young gentlemen for making a difference in our community by choosing to help the children who come to Kapi‘olani for lifesaving services.”

Evening of Hope
The Tanioka's Charity Foundation has a legacy of raising money for Hawai‘i Pacific Health, giving more than $300,000 to HPH medical centers. The Tanioka’s Evening of Hope dinner inspired others to follow the family’s lead. The focus of the event was supporting emergency and trauma services at HPH.
“Years ago, our family took a tour of Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children and it broke my mother's heart to see children suffering,” said Jasmine Tanioka, chief financial officer for Tanioka’s Seafoods and Catering. “This fundraiser will only add to our heartfelt wish to make an impact and be a blessing in the lives of others.”
FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Justin Tanioka, Lynn Tanioka, Mel Tanioka, Ethan Tanioka and Jasmine Tanioka at the Evening of Hope.
Evening of Hope Community Hero recipients Marty Collins, Matt Wells, Jeannie Roberts, and Melody Kilcommons.
Besides creating awareness, the Taniokas honored a Community Hero from each facility. The award recipients included: Melody Kilcommons, director of emergency and trauma services at Kapi‘olani Medical Center; Matt Wells, trauma program manager and stroke center coordinator at Pali Momi Medical Center; Jeannie Roberts, social worker at Straub Medical Center and Marty Collins, trauma program manager at Wilcox Medical Center.
Pink Purpose
Jams World continues to find a purpose for its pink apparel line. For the past two years, the Hawai‘i clothing company has designed a special ʻĀkala (pink) Collection with a limited edition print in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Twenty percent of sales from these specialty items funded a donation to oncology at Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s Cancer Center at Pali Momi Medical Center. The 2019 hand-painted piece of art called the Calidora Palm, that makes up the ʻĀkala (pink) Collection, also took on an even deeper meaning for Jams World and the cause.
"I felt the various shades of pink in this piece of art would enable us to tell a story with this collection as well as bring

awareness to the various types of cancer," said Pua Rochlen, Jams World president. “In our Calidora Palm pieces, each shade of pink represents the different types of cancer and the different patients this disease affects.”
Jam's World Calidora Palm print consisted of tropical florals and lush palm leaves interwoven with various shades of pink.

Cancer patients experience a multitude of emotions and reactions during treatment. One of the common side effects is hair loss. Wigs can offer patients an option at a time when a lot of choices are taken away from them. One person who understands this journey of recovery is Briana Russell, a medical assistant in Pali Momi Medical Center’s Infusion Services.
“Pali Momi’s wig program is very important,” Briana said. “It helps the women going through treatment by boosting self-esteem and making them feel beautiful. For some who don’t want people to know that they are sick, a wig helps them to feel whole again.” Briana also has a personal experience with cancer through her husband, Kama Ortiz.
“My mother is a breast cancer survivor,” Kama said. “When she received her wig, she started crying because it changed her outlook and gave her a sense of normalcy. Sometimes the littlest things can make the biggest differences.”
Kama decided to make a donation to the Pali Momi Cancer Center's patient navigation services. He shared his intention with his friends who wanted to donate too. In addition to Kama, the 4th and Inches Fantasy Football League is made up of players Micah Ancheta, Corey Silva, Ben Bright, Reid Yoshida, Kevin Mokulehua, Randall Lindsey, Emmett Hall IV, Mark Inay, Ray Carvalho and Mark Gankiewicz.
“I was blown away but I wasn’t completely surprised,” Kama said. “Our league is made up of mostly firefighters and we love helping people.”

The Burn Center at Straub Medical Center is the only burn unit in Hawai‘i and the Pacific, and relies on a team of specialists and community support to serve patients. Straub is fortunate to have as a partner Sons of the Flag, a not-for-profit organization focused on revolutionizing burn care for veterans and first responders. For the second year in a row, Sons of the Flag connected with 21 CrossFit gyms across the state for its Fight Burns fundraiser to benefit Straub’s Burn Center.
This event is meaningful on many levels for organizer James Duggins. He is a firefighter and an emergency medical technician with the Honolulu Fire Department, and the Hawai‘i task force leader for Sons of the Flag. “Surviving a burn injury is one of the most agonizing recoveries in the medical field,” James said. “These injuries send a

James and his daughter Sunny presented Straub’s Burn Center team with a donation of $9,124 from the Fight Burns fundraiser. “We had 21 CrossFit gyms participate; over 50 volunteers from Straub; the fire service and the military help; and generous donations from First Hawaiian Bank, UHA Health Insurance, HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union, Anheuser-Busch of Hawai‘i and Tamura’s Market. Home is Where the Heart Is
Palliative care is specialized medical care that improves the quality of life of patients and their families dealing with a lifethreatening illness.
When a patient is diagnosed with a terminal illness, those caring for them invest equally in healing and helping them feel comfortable. It can be a challenge. “There is a need for consistent educational learning across the health system for providers in many capacities in their learning to care for those with serious illnesses,” said Dr. Winnie Suen, a Straub Medical Center geriatrician.
Straub Medical Center received a grant from the Stupski Foundation to bring Hawai‘i Pacific Health providers together to discuss ways to support inpatient palliative care services system-wide. “This grant-funded training will provide us a focused purpose to gather our palliative care providers and programs that support caring for the seriously ill and their families, while developing a strategic plan for further development of programs,” said Dr. Suen.
"Dr. Suen and her team continue to build on that legacy by looking for ways to provide patients living with serious illness, the palliative care they need from the comfort of their homes," said Dan Tuttle, director of health at the Stupski Foundation. "We’re proud to sponsor the Palliative Care Leadership Center training for Hawai‘i Pacific Health, and we’re excited to see how it will bring palliative care to patients who need it most on O‘ahu." Larry Stupski, a former president and COO of Charles Schwab, and his wife, Joyce, a former educator and longtime entrepreneur, created the foundation in 1996 as a way to give back to the two communities they called home: the Bay Area of California and Hawai‘i.

Generations of Care
For the Lums, Straub Medical Center has been their trusted health care provider for decades. “At Straub everyone is treated like family and all of the doctors and the nurses are always there to help you,” said Betsy Lum, the family matriarch.
Betsy’s son Wilbert remembers going to Straub as a child to see his pediatrician for weekly allergy shots for his asthma. “I think that was the attraction for my mom to have that kind of care for her family. She understood excellence and had been advised to go to Straub, because there was such good care and specialty treatment,” Wilbert said.
The Lums were especially thankful for that when Betsy’s husband, William, experienced heart problems. He needed major heart surgery to insert stents in two arteries which were 90% blocked. William’s cardiologist was the late Dr. Raymond K. Itagaki. “My dad could have lost his life, but Dr. Itagaki came in and just took charge,” Wilbert said. “The Straub team knew what to do because of experience and understanding. My parents were very impressed.”

Weighing in on Babies’ Health
Support groups provide a valuable lifeline for new mothers, offering education and skill-building to help their babies thrive. The Breastfeeding HUI Support Group at Wilcox Medical Center is facilitated by a lactation educator to address breastfeeding concerns as well as to give new moms a chance to share their frustrations and questions with others who truly understand. “We have anywhere from six to 10 moms attend the virtual breastfeeding support group twice a month,” said Kandi Bloss, certified obstetrics nurse and lactation consultant.
In addition to the lessons and emotional support, women can also do a consultation with Kandi to check on their babies’ growth with an infant scale cart, a rolling device that can calculate even a wiggly infant’s weight in seconds. Community donations to Wilcox’s capital equipment fund paid for the cart. “During consults, I can do a before weight then an after weight to see if the infant is transferring enough milk,” Kandi said. “The infant scale has been such a blessing to our breastfeeding service.”

medical initiatives. Wilcox has been featured at the chamber’s annual general membership meeting the past two years. In 2019, chamber members learned about the medical center’s fundraising campaigns for emergency and trauma care.
“I can tell you as a stage 4 cancer survivor, that's where I was healed and that's where I got my treatments. I'm a huge advocate for Wilcox and keeping the medical center relevant as well as up-todate," Michelle said.

Aloha Inspire readers,
Hawai‘i Pacific Health patients are at the heart of everything we do. The patient experience and the medical center’s service to our communities are the meaningful motivation behind giving. In honor of this exceptional care, based on expertise and compassion, Inspire magazine has found its voice. Stories from grateful patients, dedicated medical staff and generous donors, inspire us and you.
Whether it’s a doctor who saved your life, a nurse who comforted your family or a staff member who extended themselves to help, we want to hear your story! Donations make a difference in action and inspiration.
We feel so fortunate to be an extension of the care at HPH by writing your stories. If you have a story to share, contact us at Foundations@HawaiiPacificHealth.org 55
