AT LUNCHTIME, WORKERS LINED UP FOR A CHANCE TO DUNK THEIR BOSSES INTO A TANK FULL OF WATER AT PALI MOMI MEDICAL CENTER. At Straub Benioff Medical Center, leaders manned pancake griddles to serve breakfast to their staff while others at Harbor Court could grab a freshly made waffle. Employees and visitors at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children picked up everything from porchetta sandwiches and pancit to Moloka‘i Hot Bread, while Wilcox Medical Center staff stopped for a moment to weave beautiful lei po‘o.

These fun events and dozens more had a single focus: the Employee

Giving Campaign. The theme for 2024 was “The Aloha We Share,” a reference to how people across Hawai‘i are intertwined through their love of family, friends and community. That feeling echoed throughout fundraisers in every medical facility — ultimately raising $969,364 to support programs and services at HPH that would not otherwise be possible.

“My colleagues who give don’t always get to see and hear the gratitude from our patients, but I see it, I feel it,” said Miranda Padilla, RN, Wilcox case manager. “Every donation makes a difference.”

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear Hawai‘i Pacific Health Supporter,

WILCOX MEDICAL CENTER WAS FOUNDED IN 1938 TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY HEALTH CARE FOR THE PEOPLE OF KAUA‘I. Today, more than 86 years later, our team at Wilcox continues to meet the evolving needs of the Kaua‘i community, ensuring that patients receive the compassionate and comprehensive care they deserve.

One of the reasons why we are able to continue providing high-quality, state-ofthe-art medical care on Kaua‘i is because of the support and generosity of partners like the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.

We are truly grateful to the Helmsley Charitable Trust for its recent grant of more than $10.6 million to Wilcox to expand and develop its imaging programs and capabilities. It’s the Helmsley Charitable Trust’s first gift in Hawai‘i and part of its ongoing efforts to improve rural health care.

The grant will support the purchase of new imaging equipment, including a new MRI machine, and renovations and upgrades to current treatment and exam rooms. In addition, it will help strengthen our health care workforce and support the next generation of doctors on Kaua‘i by funding

two sleep rooms at the medical center for family medicine residents.

In partnership with the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa John A. Burns School of Medicine, Wilcox has developed a permanent Family Medicine Residency Program on Kaua‘i and is taking an active role in the state’s efforts to address the physician shortage across the islands, particularly in rural areas. Through this program, family medicine residents will train on Kaua‘i, strengthening their relationships with medical teams on the island and deepening their connections with the community.

It’s through connections like these that we are able to make a positive and lasting impact on the health and well-being of our state. Thank you for your continued support. Together, we are creating a healthier Hawai‘i.

Sincerely,

MESSAGE FROM THE SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF PHILANTHROPY

Aloha, Friends of Hawai‘i Pacific Health,

HOW WE FEEL IMPACTS HOW WE LIVE. WHEN WE ARE AFFECTED BY A COLD, INJURY OR A DIAGNOSIS FOR A CONDITION, WE ARE REMINDED THAT WE CAN NEVER TAKE OUR HEALTH FOR GRANTED.

At Hawai‘i Pacific Health, we hear these stories every day from our medical staff, patients and donors. Their personal reflections provide even more perspective about the valuable work we are committed to in health care.

We are proud to share how donors and partners like you engage with us to help provide these special patient experiences and generously support our system as well as the community. Recently, Disney magic captured the hearts of pediatric patients who were treated to a special world premiere of the movie “Moana 2” as an adventurous distraction at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. Married physicians Dr. Kenneth Robbins and Dr. Clarissa Burkert have a strong HPH bond, and their legacy will support the next chapter of care at the future Straub Benioff Medical Center. High school students help Pali Momi Medical Center donors imagine the next generation of health care professionals by starting their careers today. Wilcox Medical Center patients are finding comfort in a friendly companion — a new hospital facility dog named Star!

It's a privilege to have a role in these medical moments and to hear these stories of hope and healing firsthand. We must remember that one patient story at HPH often involves multiple teams across our system of care. Whether directly involved or working behind the scenes, hundreds of staff members contribute to a patient’s experience.

Gifts to our medical centers, programs and services have long-lasting impact and reach. We can’t thank you enough for creating a healthier Hawai‘i with us. One donation can lead to a lifesaving moment that inspires someone else to give, and that’s always a story worth telling.

With gratitude and aloha,

SCAN to hear the stories of four patients who continue to inspire us at HPH.

A Gift for the Garden Isle

A landmark grant for Kaua‘i and the state brings a healthier future for Kaua‘i into sharp focus.

FROM LEFT : Noelle Lau, Wilcox Health Foundation development officer; Derek Kawakami, Kaua‘i County mayor; Ray Vara, HPH president and CEO; Jen Chahanovich, Wilcox president and CEO, and CEO of Kaua‘i Medical Clinic; Walter Panzirer, Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust trustee; and Hawai‘i Gov. Josh Green, MD.

IT WAS A MYSTERIOUS AUGUST MORNING AT WILCOX MEDICAL CENTER.

Community leaders, Wilcox medical teams and donors mingled with Hawai‘i Gov. Josh Green, MD, and Kaua‘i County Mayor Derek Kawakami. Everyone chatted over cups of coffee and liliko‘i lemonade as they wondered what was in store.

The excitement reached its peak as Walter Panzirer walked up to a podium. The former paramedic, firefighter and police officer is a grandson of the late New York real estate mogul Leona Helmsley. He is also a trustee of the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and, along with his wife and children, a resident of Kaua‘i. But it was his words that morning that elicited genuine cheers and applause: The Helmsley Charitable Trust was giving more than $10.6 million to Wilcox to enhance care for the people of Kaua‘i.

portraits of everything from broken bones to cancerous tumors, spinal cord conditions, aneurysms, internal bleeding and brain injuries. Medical teams can diagnose conditions earlier, making treatment more effective.

Wilcox is Kaua‘i’s primary stroke center and the only Level III Trauma Center on the island. So, when every minute counts, equipment that can provide accurate images quickly makes a significant difference in saving lives.

“When you’re not feeling well, it’s always better to get care at home. And now Hawai‘i residents will be able to access another facet of care,” Walter said.

This is the largest gift ever made to Wilcox and the second largest in Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s history. It will ensure Kaua‘i's largest medical center can bring in the latest technology in an integral tool for early diagnosis and treatment — advanced imaging.

Imaging has come a long way from the discovery of X-rays in the early 20th century. Today, MRI and CT scans provide detailed, 3D

“We know how devastating a trauma incident can be, especially in our small community,” said Jen Chahanovich, Wilcox president and CEO, and CEO of Kaua‘i Medical Clinic. “This funding will enhance our medical teams’ ability to diagnose an injury or illness, or to perform a lifesaving procedure, every day on Kaua‘i.”

With the Helmsley Charitable Trust’s gift, Wilcox will create the first interventional radiology suite of its kind on the Garden Isle. The state-ofthe-art space will be highly efficient, allowing Wilcox specialists to make a diagnosis then immediately treat the issue in the same room. It will support

minimally invasive techniques such as angioplasties to open blocked blood vessels and nonsurgical procedures for placing stents and taking tissue biopsies.

Another key part of Wilcox’s Imaging Department is fluoroscopy, which combines multiple X-ray images to create a real-time “video” of movement, such as blood flowing through blood vessels, the gastrointestinal tract or to guide a catheter. The Helmsley Charitable Trust grant will upgrade X-ray and fluoroscopy equipment and renovate the exam room, as well as provide a new MRI machine and renovations in the space for orthopedics, neurology and cardiology. The MRI will enhance biopsies for patients who are at high risk of breast cancer and strengthen Wilcox’s ability to perform prostate, breast and cardiac exams.

“Most people do not recognize how challenging it is to run hospitals,” Walter said. “The margins are so incredibly thin, they’re razor thin, and it takes partnerships with philanthropy and the community to continue medical advancements in communities and bring the latest and greatest care.”

Future physicians will also benefit. Resident radiologists will not only get to work with the newest, most advanced technology, funds will also go toward building two sleep rooms for Wilcox’s new Family Medicine Residency Program. Starting in 2026, a cohort of family medicine residents from the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine will spend the majority of their second and third years

at Wilcox. The room will give the new physicians a dedicated quiet place to rest during what can be some of the most intense years of their training. The investment, as well as the relationships they build on Kaua‘i, could greatly impact where they decide to spend the rest of their careers; 80% of residents who train in Hawai‘i stay in Hawai‘i.

The $10.6 million grant for Wilcox was the first gift the Helmsley Charitable Trust has ever made in Hawai‘i. But, it won’t be the last in its efforts to build better futures for people in the islands by increasing access to health care for all.

“We just don’t write checks and leave. It’s a long-term partnership,” Walter said. “We listen to the community. We empower the community. They’re already delivering great care here. They’re delivering great care on all the neighbor islands. They just need a boost.”

“Wilcox is committed to staying at the forefront of medicine,” Chahanovich said. “This incredible investment for our community enables us to provide cutting-edge care to generations of Kaua‘i families for years to come.”

An Inside Look

The first-in-Hawai‘i gift from the Helmsley Charitable Trust for Wilcox inspired people across Hawai‘i Pacific Health and the state. Here is what some of the leaders who attended the announcement had to say.

“A lot of people now say that your ZIP code is more impactful than your genetic code, meaning where you live makes a big difference if you don't have access to great technology and providers. Having an MRI at Wilcox means we can do the advanced cardiology imaging that has been developed. This will benefit the people of Kaua‘i.”

“My two children took their first breath here. My mom took her last here. Wilcox is woven into our community.

“Rural communities, at times, can feel that we are overlooked, perhaps forgotten. But it is organizations like Hawai‘i Pacific Health, and people like Walter and the Helmsley Charitable Trust, that remind us that rural communities matter. On behalf of the people of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau, mahalo.”

“The work of Walter, your family, the Helmsley Charitable Trust, and the commitment that you've made — that takes guts, that takes leadership, that takes will. Kaua‘i will be better from this point forward because of that.

“As we look forward and think about making a difference here on this island, in this state, and as a road map for other communities in the U.S. that possibly don't believe they have a path to creating health, I think we will be a guiding light in terms of what is possible.”

More Than a Namesake

THERE’S A SAYING IN HAWAI‘I THAT MANY KAMA‘AINA ARE SOMEHOW RELATED. Some have roots that trace back generations in the islands, and the Wilcox family is no different. In 1938, the family of George Norton Wilcox opened G.N. Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Līhu‘e. Although its name has changed over the years, Wilcox’s commitment to its patients and community has not.

A member of the Wilcox family has served on the hospital or foundation board ever since Wilcox opened 87 years ago. That includes David Pratt, who married Deborah Wilcox Pratt. David was the medical center's board chair for nearly 20 years. He was a dedicated community member with a passion for giving back.

“He did the things he did because he knew they were important for the community,” said David’s son Sam. “It wasn't ever about him.”

David had a vision for Kaua‘i. As president and CEO of Grove Farm, he helped lead efforts to build entire communities and thousands

of homes. He also oversaw large projects, including the construction of Kukui Grove Center. Additionally, David was a philanthropist who supported education and, of course, health care.

“Dad believed that you need really good health care on Kaua‘i,” Sam said. “All of the work he did was because he wanted to make our community as strong as it could be.”

Sam and his brother, Bill, are continuing their father’s legacy of giving to the medical center that their family created. After David’s death in June 2024, at the age of 89, the brothers pledged to support Wilcox for years to come. In lieu of flowers, the family asked loved ones to consider making donations to Wilcox and other organizations David supported in his honor. More than $10,000 was raised for Wilcox Health Foundation.

Sam is also continuing another family tradition. He has joined the Wilcox Health Foundation Board.

“It’s so important for people to be at home during the most significant health care events in their lives,” Sam said. “We are always striving to continue to provide meaningful care on Kaua‘i so our community can be treated here.”

“All of the work Dad did was because he wanted to make our community as strong as it could be.”

Forever a Voice for Change

She faced her challenges with courage and a smile. Now, Ally Tamayose's voice lives on through her legacy of working every day to help others.

“Your illness doesn’t define you; bravery and courage do.”
— ALLY TAMAYOSE
Ally Tamayose at the hospital prom attended by patients at Kapi‘olani in 2019.

ALLYSON TAMAYOSE DIDN’T INTEND TO MAKE A NAME FOR HERSELF. As a young girl, she joyfully shared her bubbly personality and big smile. She loved soccer and was a huge fan of Harry Potter and Disney. Then, when she was 12, something unexpected happened.

“When Ally was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, she was really into soccer. Soon she couldn’t play soccer anymore,” Ally’s mom, Dayle, said. “She was looking for something new, so we asked her, ‘What is your purpose?’”

Ally found her answer. She advocated for others facing childhood cancer by telling her story. She shared personal experiences at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children to educate and inspire others to help make a difference. As a teen, she underwent multiple surgeries at the medical center and spent weeks there for therapy.

Ally often volunteered for on-air interviews at the Kapi‘olani Radiothon for Kids. Deeply committed, she once did a Radiothon interview from her hospital bed. As a junior board member for Make It Better Agents, a national organization focused on pediatric osteosarcoma, she continued to speak out to improve cancer programs and advance research.

“We knew she had a big impact, but we didn't realize how much of an impact she had locally, nationally and internationally,” Dayle said. “There was power in her voice. Strangers still share stories with us about how Ally inspired them through difficult times.”

Ally found ways to engage people in her fight against cancer so it felt like their fight too. From garage sale fundraisers to buying gold bows she made for Childhood Cancer Awareness month, people never stopped supporting Ally even after she passed away in 2023. “#AllyTamaStrong” stickers are still proudly displayed on everything from cars to water bottles across O‘ahu and beyond.

“That’s Ally’s legacy, the ability to still make a difference when you're not here,” said her dad, Tory. “We're grateful we can carry it on as a family.”

On Giving Tuesday in December, the Tamayose family donated more than $30,000 for the future Martha B. Smith Cancer & Infusion Center at Kapi‘olani. The Wo family gave an additional $10,000 toward the center that will include areas for multidisciplinary teams and families, enhanced patient care resources and further efforts for clinical trials and new therapies. Both gifts in Ally’s memory will help expand the cancer care Kapi‘olani provides to about 1,000 women and children in Hawai‘i and the Pacific region every year.

“Everyone saw how much Kapi‘olani helped her, and these gifts are a thank you for everything Kapi‘olani has done for our family, Ally and the community,” said Ally’s sister, Keely.

“Although she only lived until she was 16, Ally did so much for so many people,” Tory said.

Ally once said, “Your illness doesn’t define you; bravery and courage do.” She was right. Ally will always be remembered for her strength against all odds — a girl with a powerful voice and a purposeful life.

Movie Magic

CREATING MOMENTS OF HAPPINESS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN DISNEY AND STARLIGHT CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION COME TOGETHER FOR KEIKI AT KAPI‘OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN. In November, patients and their families were all smiles in the Kapi‘olani auditorium as they

became some of the first in the world to watch the premiere of “Moana 2” days before the blockbuster movie was released in theaters.

“Disney has been a supporter of children’s hospitals all over the world for decades, dating all the way back to Walt Disney’s days, and we’re proud to carry on that legacy today,” said Bob Iger, CEO

of The Walt Disney Company, who came to Kapi‘olani to personally meet with patients and families at the event.

The Disney magic started when families received exclusive movie tickets during a “Moana 2”-themed party at the medical center. Kids were able to select movie-themed toys, stuffed animals, books and more from Starlight while participating in fun Moana-inspired activities. The smiles

got even bigger when Moana herself stopped by for a surprise visit to take pictures with keiki and their families.

Kapi‘olani has a longstanding relationship with Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa, and Disney cast members work closely with Kapi‘olani to deliver moments of happiness through character visits and events like the “Moana 2” celebrations.

“When we walked in, I said, ‘Do you see all the magic around you?’ And my daughter was like, ‘Yeah!’ And her face just lit up,” said Nanea Aumua, mother of a Kapi‘olani patient. “She was so excited to see Moana.”

The next day, patients lined up outside the Kapi‘olani auditorium for the movie party. They were treated to additional Moana-themed toys, popcorn boxes and snacks before settling into their seats. Some keiki got even more into the movie mood, dressing up in new Moana-themed Starlight hospital gowns.

“Through our collaboration with Disney, we’ve created a new princess Starlight Hospital Gown featuring Moana,” said Adam Garone, Starlight Children’s Foundation CEO. “Kids will now be able to channel the spirit of Moana and embrace her courage, resilience and confidence during their hospital stay.”

Cheers were loud and eyes lit up as the room dimmed for the start of the movie. After the film, families walked out of the auditorium feeling a bit emotional about the exclusive opportunity to watch Moana’s newest voyage.

“To see ‘Moana 2’ first is such an honor,” said Rene Jong, mother of a Kapi‘olani patient. “Moana is definitely a role model for Pacific Islanders. The movie shows how much can be accomplished if people can be who they are and not have to worry about what others think.”

Moana represents strength, bravery and perseverance, just like Kapi‘olani’s pediatric patients. That’s the real magic, and it’s in all of them.

A Glam Night of Giving

IN NOVEMBER, THE NEAL S. BLAISDELL CENTER RETURNED TO A TIME WHEN DISCO WAS KING FOR A SIGNATURE GALA BENEFITING A MEDICAL CENTER ENVISIONED BY A QUEEN.

Glamour, glitter and generosity were on full display at the 2024 Kapi‘olani Soirée. Hundreds of guests in sparkling sequins and their bell-bottomed best received the VIP treatment as bouncers pulled back the velvet ropes that led them back to the days of Studio 54.

Amid spoonfuls of gold flaketopped caviar, glam group portraits

in the neon-lit photobooth and bites of MW Restaurant’s red wine-braised short ribs, the purpose of the Soirée gleamed through. The exciting evening benefited the future Martha B. Smith Cancer & Infusion Center.

“Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children is at the heart of why we’re here tonight,” said Karen Tiller Polivka, Kapi‘olani Health Foundation board chair and Soirée co-chair. “Every move you make and every dollar you contribute supports life-changing care for women and children.”

“Your presence here reflects your generous spirit,” said Ruth Mills, Kapi‘olani Health Foundation board member and Soiree co-chair, “and we are so deeply grateful.”

The Soirée would not have been possible without generous donors and sponsors. Lead sponsors Justine Stamen Arrillaga and John Arrillaga were joined by more than 50 others, including more than a dozen $25,000 Platinum Sponsors, beverage and wine sponsor Southern Wine & Spirits, entertainment sponsors Highgate and Alaska Airlines, and grand prize donors Hawaiian Airlines and Four Seasons Hotel New York.

A Head Start in Health Care

A

new clinic in West O‘ahu is growing the next generation of health care workers right in their own community.

IT’S EASY

TO MISS FROM THE OUTSIDE.

But take a closer look, and you’ll find something at Waipahu High School that you won’t see almost anywhere else in the country.

Across from the administration building is the school’s new Academic Health Center. While it’s located on the school campus, it is a fully functioning clinic that provides primary care and OB-GYN services to the public.

Hawai‘i Pacific Health physicians, nurses, medical assistants and patient service representatives run the center, offering the same quality care as in any HPH clinic. What makes it truly unique are the students in Waipahu’s Academy of Health & Sciences who are shadowing these professionals, receiving real-life experience in administrative to clinical positions. This hands-on learning complements the education they receive in the classroom, giving them a big head start in their health care career.

The center, one of the first of its kind in the nation, opened in April 2024. It was the result of an expansive partnership among HPH, Waipahu High, the state Department of Education, the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine and Hawai‘i 3Rs. Renovating the 1,870-square-foot space took just about a year. Today, the center has the look and

feel of a modern clinic, complete with four exam rooms, a treatment room and a bright, spacious lobby.

Waipahu junior Leila Manibog was among the first to get a shadowing opportunity. She has been interested in medicine for as long as she can remember. Both her parents and several relatives are in health care. When she was younger, she’d follow her mom on bring-your-kids-to-work days and see her interacting with patients and caring for them. Leila’s goal, inspired by her pharmacist uncle, is to get into pharmacy school.

Shadowing the team at the Academic Health Center was a “really big eye opener” for Leila. She joined the group huddle, where the entire team goes over the day’s duties and priorities. One of the medical assistants showed her how to do quality checks. She also got to see three patients with the physician.

“Seeing how the clinic works in real life and spending time with the patients, it was really motivating,” Leila said.

It’s students like Leila who give a sense of fulfillment to Dr. Liana Kobayashi, the Academic Health Center’s full-time family medicine physician. Her journey to becoming a doctor has taken her from growing up on the Windward side to studying and working in

Dr. Liana Kobayashi (second from right) in the center’s morning meeting with the team and students.

Arizona and Ohio. But she always wanted to come back to Hawai‘i. The center gives her an opportunity to care for patients while mentoring the next generation.

“When I was in pre-med, it was hard to get shadowing opportunities,” Dr. Kobayashi said. “Here at the clinic, it’s so easy because we’re right on campus and all of us are very open to teaching.”

The Academic Health Center was built with students in mind, and that’s evident everywhere you look. The lobby check-in area has extra space so students can sit next to HPH patient service representatives and learn. The lab and patient rooms were also designed with ample room for students to observe and ask questions. Even the clinic’s walls are decorated with artwork created by Waipahu students.

Furthermore, the clinic physicians set aside time in their schedules to connect with students and explain the decisions they make when seeing patients. And as more of the 500 students in Waipahu’s Academy of Health & Sciences experience the clinic in the coming years, the goal is to tailor it to provide even more experiences that students can benefit from.

“This clinic is a dynamic process, and we’re only getting started,” said Dr. Sandra Noon, Hawai‘i Pacific Health Medical Group (HPHMG) chief of primary care, who was one of the first physicians to see patients in the center. “As we grow, we want the students to inform us of what they want to learn because this is their clinic.”

college. She hasn’t decided where yet, possibly the West Coast. But wherever she goes, one thing’s for sure: she wants to eventually come back home.

Her classmate Leila, born and raised in Waipahu, feels the same way. She doesn’t know where her aspirations of becoming a pharmacist will take her, but she wants to return to Hawai‘i because she wants to “give back to the community that raised us.”

“It is a huge step forward for health care in Hawai‘i. This clinic will be an invaluable resource in preparing the next generation of homegrown health care providers.”

Waipahu junior Aubrey Baptista, who dreams of becoming a surgeon, is thankful she got to be involved behind the scenes of an actual doctor’s office while still in school.

“I’m so lucky to have this opportunity,” she said. “I feel like I’m taking the initiative to work toward my future, even before going to college.”

As she prepares for her senior year at Waipahu High, Aubrey is looking forward to having more hands-on opportunities at the clinic before she heads off to

Dr. Leslie Chun, HPHMG CEO, described the clinic as an investment worth making for the state’s future.

“It is a huge step forward for health care in Hawai‘i. This clinic will be an invaluable resource in preparing the next generation of homegrown health care providers,” Dr. Chun said.

Seeing the clinic up and running was a full-circle moment for Keith Hayashi. Before becoming DOE superintendent, he was the principal of Waipahu High. It was his partnership with HPH that created the first medical assistant training program for high school students in Hawai‘i, the trailblazing program that created the path for the Academic Health Center.

Seeing these partnerships come to fruition makes this “the most exciting time in public education,” Keith said. “When these students are successful, that success permeates to their family and community.”

Bold initiatives like the Academic Health Center wouldn’t be possible without community supporters, including The Healy Foundation. The organization that advocates for youth empowerment is committed to supporting the Academic Health Center and HPH workforce development programs for teens for the next few years.

“We are honored to support Pali Momi Foundation and the Academic Health Center,” said Usha Kilpatrick, The Healy Foundation’s Hawai‘i program director. “The clinic is providing critical, meaningful career pathway opportunities for our youth, while simultaneously helping to strengthen our health care community. We value the creative and communitybased approach that they have undertaken.”

Straight from the Heart

WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS, 100 MINUTES CAN FEEL LIKE A LIFETIME. In heart emergencies, receiving care 100 minutes closer can save a life.

Pali Momi Medical Center’s cardiac catheterization laboratory has been a true lifeline since it opened in 2008. In its first year, 150 cardiac procedures were completed in the cath lab. In the last year, Pali Momi’s experienced cardiac team performed more than 1,500 procedures in two labs — which offer the only interventional heart care in Central and West O‘ahu.

“We treat some of the sickest patients, including former plantation workers in their 80s, which is when coronary disease tends to be more complex,” said Dr. John Kao, Pali Momi chief of cardiology. “If we weren’t able to quickly perform the advanced care here, fewer would survive. Also, being able to offer these services close to patients’ families, close to home, helps them psychologically and emotionally.”

The need is clearly growing. And in 2024, generous donors funded the latest equipment for the lifesaving lab.

The new equipment provides moredetailed images for everything from high-risk stent placements to coronary interventions. It will also support new initiatives like the Pulmonary Embolism Thrombectomy Program. Multidisciplinary teams use catheters to directly extract or break up life-threatening blood clots. Historically, patients would spend days or weeks in a hospital on blood-thinning medication, with no guarantee it would work.

“We are fortunate to live in a very special place,” said Jasmine Cabrera, sales manager for Par Hawai‘i. “Ensuring people in our neighborhood have top-tier facilities in their backyards, it's a good way to give back.”

The upgrades would not have been possible without support from the community, including Bank of Hawai‘i Foundation, First Hawaiian Bank Foundation and Par Hawai‘i, which recently opened its headquarters in West O‘ahu.

“Without the generosity of our community and local businesses, this upgrade would not have been possible,” said Jason Pauls, manager of the Pali Momi cardiac catheterization labs. “We thank them very much.”

The Pulse of Cardiac Care

The Straub Benioff Medical Center cardiac team just marked several big milestones. But each individual, personal patient story shows the true heart behind their care.

DAVE BROOKS REFUSED TO LET HIS FAMILY HISTORY OF HEART PROBLEMS

DEFEAT HIM. He was a self-proclaimed jock while growing up in San Diego. Dave stuck to a healthy diet and rejected smoking, a habit he grew to avidly dislike while watching his father light up for decades.

When he bought his first home on Kaua‘i, it was just 100 steps from Po‘ipū Beach. Every day, before and after work at construction sites, he would go for miles-long swims in the bay. One night, after his workout, the 50-yearold felt a pain in his left arm.

A slight abnormality in his electrocardiogram led to a stress test, which Dave easily passed. But afterwards, his heart continued to race. When doctors at Wilcox Medical Center asked about his family history, Dave told them his father and grandfather both died of heart failure. He was sent to Straub Benioff Medical Center for more tests.

There, medical teams found a major artery was blocked. The rest of his arteries were 95% obstructed. Dave needed a quadruple bypass — a procedure his father had twice in eight years. The surgery was successful, and Dave was able to return to Kaua‘i four days later.

“I wouldn’t be here without Straub Benioff,” Dave said.

Tens of thousands of patients have success stories like Dave’s because of the Clarence T.C. Ching Heart Center at Straub Benioff. The experienced cardiology team provides noninvasive and minimally invasive evaluations and treatments for everything from irregular heartbeats to blockages and other conditions.

From the beginning, the Heart Center has been on the forefront of cardiac care, and its experienced specialists are consistently innovating to bring the newest treatments to Hawai‘i. Nearly 30 years after

“Practicing medicine is much more personal in Hawai‘i. Some days, it seems like every patient I see has some connection through family or friends.”
— DR. JARED OYAMA Straub Benioff interventional cardiologist

the first minimally invasive coronary bypass procedure in the state was performed at Straub Benioff, the structural cardiology team performed its 1,000th transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR, which uses the body’s own blood vessels and blood flow to replace heart valves instead of open-heart surgery.

“Most patients are walking in the hallway a few hours after the procedure and are going home the following day,” said Dr. Jared Oyama, Straub Benioff interventional cardiologist.

“Because the recovery time from the procedure is minimal, patients can enjoy the benefit of the new valve right away.”

Also in 2024, the team inserted its 500th WatchmanTM implant. These devices prevent blood clots that can lead to strokes. But even as the number of procedures grew, the heart care team continued to treat each patient as a unique individual.

“Practicing medicine is much more personal in Hawai‘i,” Dr. Oyama said. “Some days, it seems like every patient I see has some connection through family or friends.”

Dave is now one of those with a strong connection to Straub Benioff. More than a decade after heart failure almost cut his time short, he is still swimming, gardening and enjoying an active life. Every year, he now celebrates a second “birthday,” marking the date of his heart surgery by making a gift in honor of the Straub Benioff medical teams who helped him through.

“Most people at 63 are in the fourth quarter of their life. I’m definitely in overtime because they gave me a second chance,” Dave said.

Pledge FOR THE Future

SOMETIMES, A JOB BECOMES MORE THAN A JOB. IT BECOMES A CALLING, A LIFELONG MISSION.

Dr. Ken Robbins and his wife, Dr. Clarissa Burkert, may have retired as full-time physicians, but their impact on Hawai‘i’s health care is far from over.

The physician couple is making a $1 million pledge to support Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s largest project ever — creating a health care campus of the future at Straub Benioff Medical Center.

The story behind their gift goes back decades.

Both had long careers at the medical center. Dr. Burkert worked in the Occupational Medicine Department for 15 years. Dr. Robbins was a pediatrician for 20 years before moving into a leadership role for the entire organization as HPH’s chief medical

officer. In 2020, he transitioned to an advisory role for HPH and continues to serve in that capacity to this day.

Their connection to Straub Benioff and HPH is also personal. Both Dr. Burkert and Dr. Robbins go there for their own health care. Dr. Burkert’s parents were lifelong patients there. And when their two sons were born prematurely, Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children cared for them.

“My heart and soul are with Hawai‘i Pacific Health,” Dr. Robbins said. “It’s where I have enjoyed an extraordinary 40-year career, for which I am truly grateful. I am also thankful for the excellent care my family and I have received.”

The couple’s donation will help build a new conference center at

Straub Benioff Medical Center where health care professionals can teach, learn and collaborate on patient care.

“This new campus will provide an excellent teaching facility for students and health care providers, and a space for engaging the community in better health,” Dr. Burkert said.

The couple remembers when the vision of redeveloping the campus on South King Street was in its infancy some 20 years ago. Now with construction well underway, they’re excited to see that vision becoming a reality.

“Hawai‘i Pacific Health is creating a world-class facility to match the world-class health care that Straub Benioff Medical Center already provides,” Dr. Robbins said. “We are very proud to be a part of this next chapter.”

Ready to Respond

IT WAS A NIGHT NO ONE WILL FORGET. Just an hour into the new year, the Straub Benioff Medical Center Burn Care Unit began receiving calls about a fireworks explosion on O‘ahu. The team quickly jumped into action.

“Everyone pulled together,” said Amy Chong, Straub Benioff Burn Care Unit supervisor. “Most of the staff had been through the Maui wildfires, so they knew what to do.”

Dr. David Cho was on call for the wildfires in 2023. He was also on duty when the state turned to Straub Benioff’s burn experts for help with the Aliamanu tragedy.

“It was evident from the first calls that something very serious had happened,” Dr. Cho said.

“Burns are a very unique type of trauma.”

This expert care requires specialized equipment. Donations have provided everything from easily sterilized shower gurneys to burn care mattresses. Gifts from the Honolulu Firefighters Foundation have helped fund one of the Burn Care Unit’s most unique and important spaces — the hydrotherapy treatment wet room.

“Most of the staff had been through the Maui wildfires, so they knew what to do."
— AMY CHONG Straub Benioff Burn Care Unit supervisor

Ten patients from the Aliamanu tragedy went to the Burn Care Unit, which is the most admitted from a single event in the unit’s 42-year history.

Many burn patients face long recoveries. Hospitalizations can last for months, and care often continues even after patients are discharged. Physical and psychological therapy and rehabilitation may be needed, as well as additional surgeries.

“Treating burns is complex,” said Dr. Robert Schulz, Burn Care Unit co-founder and medical director.

Heated tiles line the wet room’s ceiling to keep temperatures at about 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to the loss of skin, an essential regulator of body temperature, burn patients are at risk for hypothermia. A specialized shower is also used to help prevent infections and make patients more comfortable.

“We treat burns ranging from the very small to the most severe,” Dr. Cho said. “Our Burn Care Unit is a constant state resource.”

When the next emergency happens, the only Burn Care Unit in Hawai‘i and the Pacific will be ready.

“The community’s support keeps our team going,” Chong said.

A Miracle Child

Aurelia Awa has overcome more in her young life than most ever will. And the 2025 Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network Champion has a message for all of us.

SPEND A FEW MINUTES WITH AURELIA AWA, AND SHE WILL PROBABLY TELL YOU A JOKE. Spend a little more time with the spunky sixth grader, and she will fill you in on everything from her favorite books (she just finished the Harry Potter series) to music (Aurelia’s a big Bruno Mars fan) to how she wants to change the world one day.

The bubbly young girl can also tell you all about cancer, optic nerve atrophy and cardiac challenges. Aurelia has faced all of it in her 11 years of life.

Her journey was not one anyone expected. Rachel Awa had a normal pregnancy. She went into labor on her due date and when their perfect baby was born, Rachel and her husband, Ka‘imi, named her after a stop they saw during a train ride through Italy — Aurelia Valley. In Latin, it means “golden,” and Aurelia definitely was a golden child.

“Holding her for the first time was such a joy,” Rachel said. “I put her on my chest, and I was just overwhelmed.”

The Awas settled in as new parents and doted on their beautiful baby girl. When she was just 2 weeks old, they noticed what looked like bruises under her eyes. They got darker through the day.

After a visit to her pediatrician, tests showed Aurelia’s red blood cell count and platelet levels were extremely low.

She went to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children for additional tests.

The family spent more than a week at the medical center, then returned home. Two days later, Aurelia was having trouble breathing. She was admitted to Kapi‘olani’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit where a ventilator helped get oxygen into her little body. There, Rachel told the team that she noticed small bumps on her daughter’s head.

“It was a mystery at first,” said Dr. Darryl Glaser, Kapi‘olani pediatric hematologist and oncologist. “Abnormal blood counts indicated leukemia, but we couldn’t find leukemia cells in her bone marrow or blood. Aurelia had a very unusual case where leukemia cells clumped together in different areas of her

body: around her sinuses, which made it difficult to breathe, and in lumps on her skin and behind her eyes.”

Biopsies finally revealed the diagnosis: Aurelia had acute myeloid leukemia. The Kapi‘olani team had to move quickly.

“The first round of chemotherapy was really challenging,” Rachel said. “The fear and anger of the unknown hit me the hardest.”

Aurelia was only 4 weeks old when she began the first of four rounds of chemotherapy, as well as platelet and red blood cell transfusions. After a few weeks, she was able to breathe on her own, so the ventilator was removed. Rachel and Ka‘imi were relieved that Aurelia was finally on the road to recovery. Then, they noticed their baby would not look at them.

The cancer had damaged Aurelia’s optic nerve. She was blind.

“I just remember being so scared. How is she going to live her life? How is she going to run and play?” Rachel said. “All these emotions started coming all at once, and I felt really defeated.”

As Aurelia grew, her parents adjusted to a more verbal lifestyle. They talked their toddler through her first steps, navigating their home and so much more. Their little one blossomed. She started speaking at an early age and was soon reading and writing.

Aurelia with her family. FROM LEFT: Ka‘imi, Rachel and Quinn Awa.

The Awa family was growing, too. Rachel was pregnant again. Aurelia loved talking to her mom's tummy and was excited the day her sister, Quinn, came home.

However, Aurelia’s health challenges were not over. When she was 4, she began to get really fatigued. At Kapi‘olani, the Awas received guidance from pediatric cardiologist Dr. James Sim.

“One of the side effects of chemotherapy is that it can affect the heart, so we follow certain patients closely,” Dr. Sim said. “An echocardiogram showed signs that Aurelia was in significant heart failure.”

“We focused on what we needed to do,” Ka‘imi said. “With medication, she started to get her energy back and continued her normal life.”

Three years later, Rachel and Ka‘imi saw that their petite daughter’s appetite was changing. Two bites would fill her

up. Eventually, Aurelia was eating so little that her blood sugar would drop to a point where she would get sick or even experience seizures.

The Kapi‘olani team inserted a gastrostomy tube to deliver extra nutrients directly to Aurelia’s stomach.

At 9, Aurelia started feeling weak and her body was getting bloated. Her heart was failing again. The Kapi‘olani team was there again to treat Aurelia and adjust her medication.

“One of the great things about Kapi‘olani is that there are so many different specialists in one place,” Dr. Glaser said. “Cardiologists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, physical and occupational therapists; everybody always comes together for Aurelia.”

“To this day, the people at Kapi‘olani are our second family,” Rachel said. “You can see their commitment and love for their patients.”

“To this day, the people at Kapi‘olani are our second family."
– RACHEL AWA

At 10, Aurelia received a gift her family truly treasures. She was officially cancer free. Aurelia and Quinn turned a planned celebration into a toy drive and gathered more than 80 toys for Kapi‘olani patients.

“She’s amazing,” Rachel said. “Her blindness does not stop her. Her heart failure does not stop her. She’s tiny but mighty.”

“She’s braver than my heart will allow sometimes,” Ka‘imi said. “One time, she set up a little ramp and was sliding off the couch, sitting in a laundry basket, down the ramp. She is not fearful; she just goes for it.”

True to form, Aurelia is tackling her new role as 2025 Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network Champion without hesitation. What excites her most is the opportunity to share her story with other kids facing seemingly insurmountable challenges.

In fact, the first thing the active preteen did as Champion was sit down and write speeches. She’s finished five so far and is ready to deliver them at any time. All you need to do is ask.

“Ever wonder why Kapi‘olani is such a great hospital? It's because it helps you with heart problems, kidney problems, cancers and so much more,” she read. “It is a hospital that helped me and will help other kids stay alive.

“Mahalo and thank you for donors who donated to kids like me and help them survive.

Miracle Moments

Maui

Nō Ka ‘Oi

WHEN IT COMES TO FUNDRAISING FOR HAWAI‘I’S CHILDREN, MAUI NO KA ‘OI. The Kahului Costco raised a record-breaking $235,861 in 2024 — more than any other warehouse in the nation. Dozens of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals balloons, signifying donations to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, covered the walls of the Costco on Haleakalā Highway.

"Costco Maui is humbly honored to be a part of this fundraising campaign for such a worthy cause,” said Nalani Hunt, Costco Maui general manager. “We are so proud to be partnered with Kapi‘olani. For Hawai‘i’s keiki, we will do our very best to beat our record from 2024.”

In total, the seven Hawai‘i Costco warehouses raised more than $787,000 for Kapi‘olani.

It TakesTwo

IT’S ALWAYS NICE TO BE NO. 1. IT’S EVEN BETTER TO BE NAMED NO.

1 AND NO. 2.

That’s exactly what Walgreens in Lahaina and Hawai‘i Kai did in September.

The locations took the top spots among Walgreens nationwide during a 14-day fundraising campaign for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

In total, Hawai‘i Walgreens locations raised more than $25,000 for Kapi‘olani, which is more than double the total from 2023. Some team members went the extra mile, making and selling their own local treats and gift baskets.

“Kapi‘olani is just so much more than a hospital,” said Chase O’Neal, Walgreens district manager of retail and pharmacy operations in Hawai‘i. “Our team members were born there, their kids were born there or a family member has had treatment there.”

A Partner in Giving

A TRUSTED PARTNER CAN ALWAYS BE RELIED ON, and that’s exactly what Marriott Vacations Worldwide has been for Hawai‘i’s Children’s Miracle Network.

In 2024, the company raised more than $400,000 for keiki, nearly doubling its total from the year before. In October, it added an additional $20,000 to mark the grand opening of the Marriott Vacation Club, Waikīkī.

“This donation represents our dedication to Hawai‘i, our commitment to its environment and people, and our appreciation for the community that has continuously welcomed us in as part of its ‘ohana,” said John Geller, Marriott Vacations Worldwide president and CEO.

Mariott Vacations Worldwide has raised more than $2.5 million for Kapi‘olani since 2008.

Big Island Goes Big

OUT OF MORE THAN 4,600 WALMART STORES IN THE U.S., HILO AND KONA WALMARTS ARE TRULY TWO OF A KIND.

No other Walmart in the nation raised more money than either of the Big Island stores in Walmart’s 2024 fundraising campaign for Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. Together, they raised well over a quarter-million dollars. But the story behind the numbers is even more remarkable.

Hilo Walmart raised $166,623 in just 28 days. Not only was this the store’s fifth time being the No. 1 fundraising Walmart in the country, the Hilo store reached an incredible milestone of $1 million in lifetime donations to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

When Kona Walmart store manager John Yates III heard of his counterpart’s successes, he decided to step it up.

“We’ve always done well. In 2023, we were in the top 50 in the company,” John said. “But when our regional manager stopped by after visiting Hilo, she was so excited about what they were generating over there and we didn’t quite have that excitement. That was the spark.”

Those who didn’t sing, danced, including John, who broke out his best moves while wearing a chicken suit. One day, dozens of employees went outside and had a huge water balloon fight under the hot Kona sun.

Michael Mortera, Kona Walmart’s apparel team lead who spearheaded the store’s CMN campaign, believes the entire team was so motivated because many of them have personal connections to Kapi‘olani.

$819,000 raised for Kapi‘olani in 2024.

SCAN to join the celebration for Walmart's Team Big Island.

The Kona team got to work and assembled a jam-packed fundraising calendar. There were so many food sales, they lost count. Associates belted out tune after tune on the karaoke machine to encourage exiting customers to drop donations into fishing nets.

“Most of our associates know someone who was helped at Kapi‘olani, whether it’s their kids, niece or nephew, or even themselves,” Michael said. “So they know how important this campaign is.”

Kona’s campaign raised $102,270 — a staggering 249% increase from the previous year that made them No. 2 in the nation, just behind Hilo. But ask anyone from either store who won, and they’ll tell you the winner was Team Big Island.

“I told myself this is not about us being No. 1,” said Wendel Dait, Hilo Walmart frontend coach and the store’s CMN campaign lead. “This is about helping Kapi‘olani.”

Statewide, the nine Walmart stores, two Sam’s Club locations and one distribution center collectively raised more than $819,000 for Kapi‘olani in 2024.

United in a common cause, they’re making an impact on the lives of children all across Hawai‘i and beyond, now and for years to come.

“BREAST CANCER. IT’S A DISEASE THAT HAS TOUCHED ALL OF US.”

Those are the words beloved local lifestyle brand Fighting Eel posted on Instagram for its 48,000 followers. The special breast cancer awareness post also revealed the company’s launch of its collaboration with Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

“I've had family members, girlfriends and customers battle the disease and witnessed the grace and gratitude these women possess,” said Lan Chung, who co-founded Fighting Eel 20 years ago.“If I can help one or a thousand women become survivors through donating to breast cancer prevention and research, it's an absolute ‘yes’ for me.”

Fighting Eel first created stylish T-shirts to support and honor breast cancer patients and survivors in October 2023. In 2024, it continued the commitment by sharing stories on social media from Kapi‘olani breast cancer survivors — each wearing Fighting Eel’s new Kapi‘olani design. A few days later, online shoppers snapped up all of the elegant pink anthurium-printed tees in just minutes.

Proceeds from the two collections raised more than $40,000 for Kapi‘olani’s future Martha B. Smith Cancer & Infusion Center.

“I was in complete awe of the amazing support, feedback and sales we received from our customers,” Lan said. “Women supporting women in big or small ways — I’m so proud to be part of it.”

Driving Support for Cancer Care

PEDIATRIC CANCER RESEARCH HAS LED TO BREAKTHROUGH TREATMENTS AND HIGHER SURVIVAL RATES. That’s exactly why Hyundai Hope On Wheels (HHOW) has given more than $1.1 million to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children since 2009.

On Dec. 10, 2024, HHOW’s signature handprint ceremony was held at Kapi‘olani to recognize its latest gift: a $100,000 Hyundai Impact Grant. Patients, families, physicians and Hyundai leaders painted their hands and placed them on a Hyundai vehicle to symbolize the collective fight against pediatric cancer and hope for a cure. Hyundai says every car sold helps drive change for the nearly 15,000 children who are diagnosed with cancer each year nationwide.

“This message is not about selling cars,” said Jerry Romano, Honolulu

Rajesh Gupta (holding check, left), Hyundai Motor America western regional sales manager; Dr. Randal Wada (holding check, right), Kapi‘olani chief of pediatric hematology and oncology; and local Hyundai dealers and cancer patients.

and Windward Hyundai chief operating officer. “This is really about fighting pediatric cancer, the great work Kapi‘olani does and how we all can gather as a community to increase the awareness and support.”

SCAN to see Hyundai Hope On Wheels’ signature handprint ceremony.

Organizations like Hyundai help support Kapi‘olani’s commitment to serving its patients. In an effort to expand services for families, the medical center recently became the first in the state to earn an international recognition from the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies. The cellular therapy accreditation means patients will have more opportunities to participate in clinical trials at Kapi‘olani. These cutting-edge care options ultimately improve patient outcomes, which is why Hyundai is dedicated to the long journey toward finding a cure.

An Uplifting Gift

IN A STATE WHERE COMMUNITIES ARE SEPARATED BY OCEAN, THERE ARE TIMES WHEN CARE IS MORE THAN A DRIVE AWAY. This is especially true for neighbor island children who need specialized care that only Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children can provide.

Southwest Airlines understands the challenge.

“One of the most impactful ways Southwest Airlines connects with communities is through our Medical Transportation Grant Program,” said Kelly Knox, Southwest Airlines corporate responsibility advisor.

“This program provides essential travel support to nonprofit hospitals and medical organizations, helping to alleviate the financial burden on individuals who need to travel for care.

“Southwest is honored to contribute to the well-being of Kapi‘olani patients.”

In 2024, Southwest provided Kapi‘olani with 100 round-trip tickets, meaning dozens of local patients,

families and caregivers will have an easier time accessing life-changing treatment and care that is a plane ride away.

Kapi‘olani is one of almost 80 organizations and facilities from 26 states to benefit. Southwest has donated more than $56.6 million nationwide since it began its program in 2007.

From Mom to Moms

AMBER THIBAUT KNOWS THE POWER OF TOUCH. The mom from Maui built a blossoming business out of a stack of super soft blankets. Coco Moon began when Amber created a muslin swaddle blanket for her baby boy. Now, thousands around the world wrap their little ones in her Hawai‘i-inspired blankets and clothing — including families at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

FROM LEFT: Amanda Price, HPH director of Philanthropy; Amber Thibaut, Coco Moon founder and Kapi‘olani Health Foundation board member; Dawn Dunbar, HPH senior vice president of Philanthropy; and Joseph Block, CMN program director.

Coco Moon began donating to Kapi‘olani years ago. In 2020, it donated to the medical center’s Critical Care Transport Team. Since then, Coco Moon has given more than $74,000 through its Giving Back Program, as well as cuddly blankets and clothing for patients.

“Kapi‘olani is a pillar in Hawai‘i, providing critical care to some of our most vulnerable families, including specialized services found nowhere else in the state,” Amber said. “Over

the years, I’ve heard from many moms about the incredible support they received at Kapi‘olani and how much our giving back to the medical center means to them.”

She didn’t stop there. Amber joined the Kapi‘olani Health Foundation board, somehow squeezing time for the volunteer position in between running her busy business and raising her two boys.

“I’m always inspired by the incredible work their team does,” she said. “I am grateful for the chance to support Kapi‘olani. At Coco Moon, we believe that when we support families, we’re helping to build a stronger community for everyone.

“Giving back is not just part of our mission, it’s truly at the heart of who we are.”

And that’s a belief that touches us all.

A ofDayGiving

AS 2024 CAME TO A CLOSE, IHEARTRADIO HAD A SPECIAL GIFT FOR HAWAI‘I’S KEIKI.

Dec. 3, 2024, was Giving Tuesday — a day that encourages people worldwide to donate to causes that matter most to them. For the first time, Hawai‘i’s iHeartRadio stations decided to partner with Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network for the one-day fundraiser.

Listeners heard about Kapi‘olani’s lifesaving work and donated. Their generosity was matched by more than 20 sponsors, supporters and local businesses. Together, they raised an incredible $658,651.

“Everybody rallies for Kapi‘olani, and our listeners always come through,” said Michael W. Perry, host of “Perry & The Posse” on KSSK. “We’re very proud of KSSK’s commitment to Children’s Miracle Network. Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children is the only place of its kind within 2,600 miles, and it deserves to have the support of the community.”

The radio legend and the entire iHeartRadio team are longtime supporters of Kapi‘olani, lending their voices at every opportunity to help those facing medical challenges.

Donations from Giving Tuesday will directly support programs and services at Kapi‘olani, including the future Martha B. Smith Cancer & Infusion Center.

In addition to iHeartRadio, the success of Giving Tuesday wouldn’t have been possible without D. Suehiro Electric Inc.; O‘ahu Hyundai Dealers and Hyundai Hope On Wheels; Fighting Eel; Steve and Marilyn Katzman; Aloha Petroleum; AlohaCare; Constructors Hawai‘i; Cosco Air Conditioning & Refrigeration; Diamond Bakery; Farmers Insurance; Hawai‘i Federal Credit Union; Abbey Carpet & Floor of Hawai‘i; American Savings Bank; Chick-fil-A Ala Moana; CoCo Ichi Hawai‘i; Coco Moon; Clinical Labs of Hawai‘i; Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing; Elite Mechanical; Enterprise Mobility; F45 Training; HEMIC Foundation; Holokai Catamaran; Islands Hospice; Matson Foundation; Riggs Distributing; Unicold Corporation; and Zippy’s Restaurants.

Unforgettable Shopping Spree

CHRISTMAS REALLY DID COME IN JULY FOR KALLEY-MAE YEE.

The 2023 Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network Champion and her family were invited to the Hilo Walmart one July morning for a surprise event.

Suddenly, a familiar figure emerged from one of the aisles. Kalley-Mae immediately ran to him for a big hug.

It was Butch Galdeira, president of Diamond Bakery. He and the Yees became friends in 2023 during Diamond Bakery’s first-ever CMN fundraising campaign. For the first time in 30 years, the company changed the design of its soda cracker boxes to feature Kalley-Mae’s photo and inspiring story. Every box sold raised 25 cents for Kapi‘olani.

Diamond Bakery sold 56,000 boxes, raising $14,000. Butch flew to the Yees’ hometown to reveal the results. But that wasn’t the only surprise.

He asked Kalley-Mae to look around. They were in the toy section. Then Butch brought out an empty shopping cart and told the 6-yearold to fill it with all the toys she wanted.

Beaming with excitement, the once micropreemie began picking playhouses, dolls, stuffed animals and more. She also chose a new bicycle, which was too big to fit in the cart so she rode down the aisles as she shopped.

One very full cart and a bicycle later, Butch personally paid for all the toys.

“To see her little heart full of joy and surprise was extremely heartwarming,” he said. “It’s something I’ll remember for a very long time.”

“It was simply amazing,” Kevin, Kalley-Mae’s dad, said. “Now we have to go rent another house for all the toys.”

On a Wing and a Care

IN MAY 2024, HUNDREDS OF KIDS AND FAMILIES LEARNED JUST HOW MUCH FUN LIFE AS A BUG COULD BE. Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa hosted the annual Ko Olina Children’s Festival, a fundraiser for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. The theme for the eighth annual event centered around Disney*Pixar’s “A Bug’s Life.” Keiki engaged in buginspired activities, ranging from cockroach races with the University of Hawai‘i’s entomology team to close encounters with butterflies in local partner Paradise Monarch’s dome.

Just before sunset, Aulani’s ‘Ohana Hula Show excited the crowd before Kapi‘olani’s 2024 Children’s Miracle Network Champion, Leila-Rose Coloma, and her family took the stage to share her medical journey through heart conditions and surgery. Then, as a

symbol of the hope Kapi‘olani brings to all pediatric patients, 100 butterflies were released into the sky.

Everyone then settled into the sand to watch “A Bug’s Life.” The event raised $60,000 for Kapi‘olani’s future Martha B. Smith Cancer & Infusion Center. Since the festival began in 2014, it has raised $450,000 for Kapi‘olani.

“We are truly grateful to be able to support the visionary and lifesaving work of Kapi‘olani,” said Chynna Stone Showe, vice president of The Resort Group, master developer of Ko Olina Resort, and Kapi‘olani Health Foundation board member. “A huge mahalo to everyone who came out to enjoy the festivities, including our community partners and volunteers. They, too, share in our commitment to support Kapi‘olani’s incredible work.”

Remembering Stephanie

ASK STEVEN SAITO WHY HE GIVES TO PALI MOMI MEDICAL CENTER, AND HIS ANSWER IS SIMPLE AND HEARTFELT. It’s because of his wife.

Stephanie Saito grew up in Pearl City, and that is where she and Steven raised their family. She balanced raising her two children with a busy career as a banking executive.

“My mom always wanted to develop a cancer center here, so she began giving,” said daughter Michelle Kaneshiro.

As their children grew into adults with children of their own, Steven and Stephanie continued donating to their neighborhood medical center. Then, a few years ago,

Stephanie was diagnosed with cancer. The warm and personable wife, mom and grandmother now needed the care of Pali Momi’s team. They supported the Saito family throughout the difficult journey.

In November 2024, Steven, Michelle and Pali Momi leaders gathered for a blessing of a bench in Stephanie’s memory. A gold plaque sits above the bench that graces the front of the Pali Momi’s ‘Āina Lani — a peaceful spot where patients and their families can seek a moment of reflection and solace. It is a fitting tribute to a woman whose caring nature and legacy of giving will continue to touch many for years to come.

Legacy of Partnership

IN THE EARLY ’90S, RETINA CONSULTANTS OF HAWAI‘I (RCH) FIRST OPENED ITS DOORS AT THE NASCENT PALI MOMI MEDICAL CENTER. More than three decades later, the partnership between the two has never been stronger.

In 2024, RCH made a $10,000 donation to support one of Pali Momi’s most important services for the community — the Emergency Department.

Gloria Brooks, Pali Momi chief operating officer (center), and Pali Momi leadership team with Retina Consultants of Hawai‘i physician leadership, including Dr. James Lai (left of center), Pali Momi Foundation board member, and Dr. Gregg Kokame (right of center).

Dr. James Lai, RCH president and managing partner, says one of the reasons they chose the ED was because of how vital emergency services became during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To address the community’s needs, Pali Momi was able to expand its ED services by creating a new space called Laulima. It was designed specifically to streamline treatment for

patients with less serious conditions, reducing wait times and improving their overall experience.

“We thought it was a great idea for the ED to have a fast-track pathway,” said Dr. Lai, who’s also a member of the Pali Momi Foundation board.

Before moving to Hawai‘i in 2007, Dr. Lai had a long clinical and academic career at renowned facilities in multiple states. But he says there’s something special about Pali Momi.

"There are a lot of big hospitals in Hawai‘i, but Pali Momi's services are second to none," Dr. Lai said. "Some of its services are offered nowhere else in the state, so Pali Momi is so much more than a medical center just for Central and West O‘ahu. Pali Momi is a real treasure."

A Community Connection

STRAUB BENIOFF MEDICAL CENTER AND AMERICAN FLOOR & HOME GREW UP TOGETHER. IN 1973, THE MEDICAL CENTER OPENED THE DOORS OF ITS HOSPITAL ON SOUTH KING STREET. One year later, David Arita and a friend started their carpet business.

Now, the company the Aritas built is helping Straub Benioff move into its next phase of caring for the community. American Floor & Home raised more than $60,000 for the Straub Redevelopment Project as part of its 50th anniversary celebration.

“My dad has always wanted us to be grateful for what we have and to share with others,” said Daniel Arita,

David’s son who is now the president of American Floor & Home. “As a business owner, he also made it important to give back and has instilled this in me and our employees.”

Straub Benioff is not just a beneficiary for Daniel’s family. His mother-in-law, Merle Kikukawa, retired from there, and one of her daughters is a Straub Benioff physician assistant. Daniel’s wife, Torey, is an emergency medicine physician at Pali Momi and Kapi‘olani medical centers, so he knows the impact giving can make for patients and their families.

“We are an employee-owned company and believe that all of us should be giving back to the community in some way so we can help make an impact,” Daniel said.

Generations of Gratitude

CARING. THOROUGH AND KNOWLEDGEABLE. PERSONABLE. FUNNY. These are the words Dr. Stephen Arnold’s patients use to describe him. The internal medicine physician joined Straub Benioff Medical Center in 1978 and soon made his patients feel like part of his family.

Sandy Fong is one of them. The president of Market City Shopping Center grew up in the Kaimukī and Kāhala neighborhoods, and Dr. Arnold was definitely part of her history.

“Dr. Arnold has been our internist for generations, caring for my grandfather, uncles, aunties and my cousins and me,” she said. “He cares greatly, taking the time to know each of his patients and make us feel special. We all love him!”

Many mention Dr. Arnold’s witty jokes, but they especially

recall his care for patients, which extended beyond the exam room. He gave consistently to Straub Benioff and inspired hundreds more to do the same. Over the past 20 years, more than 750 donations, totaling more than $1 million, have been made in Dr. Arnold’s name, helping to fund programs and technology for the health of his patients and the community.

The beloved physician retired the week of Thanksgiving 2024, but the outpouring of thanks from the families who depended on him continues.

“Considering the warm gratitude so many feel for all Dr. Arnold has done, it’s not surprising that many, like us, support the Straub Benioff Foundation in his honor,” Sandy said. “To Dr. Arnold, on behalf of me and my family, here’s wishing you many great years of a welldeserved retirement.”

Dr. Stephen Arnold holds one of his original record books from the 1970s.

Rooted in Community

IN 1954, 10 PINEAPPLE FARMERS ON KAUA‘I WITH BIG DREAMS BUT LIMITED RESOURCES DECIDED TO TAKE A STEP FOR THEIR FUTURE. They pooled their savings and raised $595 to purchase heavy equipment for their farms. Together, they found a way to grow.

Gather FCU president and CEO Tess Shimabukuro (second from left) presenting a pair of $25,000 donations to the Wilcox Health Foundation and the Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network.

Over the years, this humble pineapple farmers’ cooperative grew into Gather Federal Credit Union. With a history rooted in the community, Gather FCU cares deeply about Kaua‘i.

Gather FCU’s signature fundraiser is its annual golf tournament. The sold-out event raises money for a cause that Tess Shimabukuro, Gather FCU’s president and CEO, cares deeply about — pediatric care. A few years ago, Tess toured Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children and witnessed firsthand the need for specialized care for the most vulnerable babies.

“It was such an emotional visit, seeing a baby who weighed just a pound, learning about the special equipment and services these children need,” Tess remembers. “We wanted to help the kids, especially our keiki on Kaua‘i.”

In 2024, the golf tournament celebrated its 25th anniversary with a pair of symbolic gifts: $25,000 for Wilcox Medical Center and $25,000 for Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network.

“As a community credit union, we aim our fundraising efforts to causes that positively impact the community as a whole,” said Michael Garcia, Gather FCU vice president of risk management and the tournament’s lead organizer. “And there isn’t a better cause than supporting our local hospitals.”

Supporting one another. It’s what makes a community, and that’s what Gather FCU is all about.

A Paws-itive Impact

THERE’S A NEW STAR AT WILCOX MEDICAL CENTER, AND EVERYONE WANTS HER ATTENTION WHEREVER SHE GOES. Wilcox’s new facility dog, Star, has been brightening days since November 2024. Star came from Assistance Dogs of Hawai‘i, where she took a personality test as a puppy and went through a year of specialized training.

“Wilcox believes in the power of emotional and spiritual healing as an integral part of health care,” said Carrie Hovland, RN, Star's primary handler and Wilcox's manager of Infusion Services, Hematology/Oncology and Palliative Care. “Star provides love, companionship and comfort.”

A portion of the funds from Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s

Employee Giving Campaign will help to pay for Star’s expenses.

Facility dogs are full-time, specially trained canine employees, and Wilcox’s loving labrador is no different. Star walks through the medical center five days a week, offering support for patients and staff. She attends staff meetings and even has her own email account to organize her event calendar, although some may be jealous that her schedule includes mandatory naps. As her name implies, Star is the center of attention wherever she goes, but she’s never too busy to offer a snuggle.

“Walking by her in the hall, people smile and greet her,” Hovland said. “From afar, they shout, ‘I love you, Star!’”

A Gift That Touches Generations

FOR JOANNE ABE, GIVING TO PALI MOMI MEDICAL CENTER WAS A FAMILY AFFAIR FROM THE DAY THE HOSPITAL OPENED. Her parents, Robert and Janet, were among Pali Momi's 12 original volunteers and remained dedicated to the work for 20 years.

When Robert wasn’t giving hospital tours, he was escorting patients to surgeries. Janet helped run the gift shop. When their daughter retired from teaching, one of the first things Joanne did was sign up to become a Pali Momi volunteer. She spent most of her time manning the hospital’s information desk, ensuring people were never lost or felt alone. The interactions she had with patients, families and Pali Momi staff inspired her to become a regular donor to the Pali Momi Foundation.

Joanne eventually created an endowment in memory of her parents to benefit volunteer services and cancer care at Pali Momi. She marveled at how her parents prioritized family life while also being strong role models for their work ethic and volunteer service. All this, while her father balanced two jobs to make ends meet.

“They always sacrificed their needs for others,” Joanne said at the ceremony for the endowment in 2017. “I know their spirit continues here. You celebrate a person’s life by remembering they are still with you. I celebrate my parents’ lives every day.”

Joanne’s philanthropic giving continued at every level and often. She contributed in honor of Pali Momi’s 25th anniversary and to the Dr. James T. Kakuda Cancer Center. Her biggest gift came after she passed away in 2024. Joanne left a significant part of her estate to Pali Momi and made the medical center the beneficiary of her annuity and insurance policy.

Joanne came from humble beginnings. She lived a simple but meaningful life, epitomized by the way she ended every email: “Breathe easy and often.” Joanne constantly celebrated life and her parents’ lives, and her legacy of giving at Pali Momi will allow generations of families like hers to do the same.

Aloha, Inspire Readers,

Writing this magazine is always a joyful journey for us. Meeting patients touched by care, talking with donors who were moved to give by our supportive staff and services, and witnessing community members doing all they can to fundraise for our medical centers allow us to connect to the deeper purpose of philanthropy. People genuinely want to help.

It is through quality health care and true compassion for our community’s needs that Hawai‘i Pacific Health is creating a healthier Hawai‘i. We feel so fortunate to be able to document these moments in Inspire magazine, ranging from miracle babies to seniors with lifesaving second chances.
