EMPLOYEE GIVING CAMPAIGN
Planting the Seeds of Change
HEALTHY PLANTS NEED STRONG ROOTS. AT HAWAI‘I PACIFIC HEALTH, EMPLOYEES ARE DEEPLY ROOTED IN THE MISSION OF CREATING A HEALTHIER
HAWAI‘I, and their dedication extends far beyond regular work hours. The annual Employee Giving Campaign (EGC) empowers thousands of HPH’s team members to raise money for medical programs and services that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

pledges for the not-for-profit health care system.
The theme of the 2021 EGC was “One gift grows into many when we all donate,” which highlighted the impact each individual contribution can make. Nearly 4,000 employees rallied behind the sentiment and donated $1,068,127 of their own dollars to nurture, strengthen and heal patients, their families and the community. This was the fifth straight year that HPH employees raised at least $1 million through gifts or
For many, supporting the EGC was personal. Asterlou Raquel, a surgical clinical reviewer and registered nurse at HPH, was a powerful voice for the campaign. The breast cancer survivor received her cancer care at Pali Momi Medical Center. Having experienced both sides of patient care inspired Raquel and her husband, Oscar, a nurse at Straub Medical Center, to give to HPH.
“I think it’s very important that the donors understand the impact they are creating,” said Raquel. “Cancer doesn’t just affect the person; it affects the entire family.” Donations were heartfelt. But the campaign also delivered through fun activities. Departments across the health care system hosted virtual fundraising events, in-person contests, pre-packaged food sales and craft fairs.
The most successful virtual fundraising event was the COVID-19 Creativity Contest. Employees were challenged to repurpose plastic containers that once held COVID-19 vaccine vials. People voted for their favorite creation by making a donation. Virtual and in-person events raised $52,178.
THE 2021 EGC FUNDS WENT TOWARD:
Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children’s Child Life, Chaplain Services and Palliative Care programs, which support emotional, social and spiritual care for patients and their families.
Wilcox Medical Center’s stroke care and stroke education program, which provides the highest standard of stroke care for Kaua‘i.
Pali Momi Medical Center’s Emergency Department Fund as well as the ‘Ohana Fund, which helps patients in need obtain medication, medical equipment and transportation.
Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network, a program that provides support for patient care, specialized medical equipment, emergency transport and preventive education.
Straub Medical Center’s Emergency Department Fund, which supports urgent and often lifesaving medical care for patients.
HPH employees also donated to Aloha United Way and Kaua‘i United Way.
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear Hawai‘i Pacific Health Supporter,
OUR COMMUNITY MARKED SOME SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES OVER THE PAST YEAR AS WE STARTED TO MOVE BEYOND THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. It is wonderful to see faces and smiles as mask-wearing guidelines are relaxed. People are gathering in restaurants, celebrating graduations and weddings, and traveling near and far to see family and friends. It’s a reemergence that I know we’re all happy to witness and experience.
Still, COVID-19 isn’t going away completely, and we must learn to live with it. There is likely no one who knows this more than those who work in the health care industry. I am extremely grateful for our doctors, nurses and staff at Hawai‘i Pacific Health who have worked tirelessly over the last two-plus years to care for our patients and community despite the numerous challenges they faced. Their courage and commitment are truly inspiring.
Our Pali Momi Medical Center team received national recognition for its efforts and was honored for the exceptional care it provides patients with the Healthgrades 2022 Outstanding Patient Experience Award™. Pali Momi has received this distinction four years in a row, and we are very proud of them.
As the 100th anniversary of Straub Medical Center came to an end, we held a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off our multi-year redevelopment project for the current campus. Straub’s legacy of putting patients first and providing high-quality health care is the inspiration for this new state-of-the-art health care campus of the future. The innovative design and features of the new campus will help us address the ever-changing needs of our community and truly reflect the quality of care Straub is known to deliver.
On Kaua‘i, we celebrated the culmination of another large construction project and unveiled our newly renovated Emergency and Trauma Department at Wilcox Medical Center. This $5.1 million project was funded by community donations and will elevate the level of trauma and emergency care available to the people of Kaua‘i.
At Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, the new Cancer and Infusion Center is another milestone project for us, which you can read about in this issue. This center is a true reflection of Kapi‘olani’s commitment to the health care needs of Hawai‘i’s women and children.
None of this would have been possible without you. Despite the daunting challenges you faced throughout the pandemic, you continued to give in support of our patients, staff, programs and services. On behalf of everyone at Hawai‘i Pacific Health, thank you for your support of these projects, and more importantly, for your support of our patients. Working together, we are creating a healthier Hawai‘i.
Sincerely,
Ray Vara President & CEO Hawai‘i Pacific Health

DONOR LISTING
MESSAGE FROM THE SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends of Hawai‘i Pacific Health,
THE PANDEMIC FORCED ALL OF US TO TAKE A PAUSE, BUT IN HEALTH CARE THE NEEDS OF OUR PATIENTS NEVER STOP. Fortunately, when there are challenges in medicine, our clinical teams respond, as they always do, by pressing forward. At Hawai‘i Pacific Health, we see how the experience of COVID-19 has resulted in a greater emphasis on living a healthier life. We all want to be closer to family and friends, hug others longer and remove the space between us that social distancing created.
We certainly have made progress to connect again with the assistance of vaccines and safety protocols. Your donations this past year were also valuable reminders of how important our medical centers are for our community. We were able to expand programs and services through expertise, vision and funding. Your gifts enable us to to expand and grow.
As you will read in our cover story, the next big endeavor for cancer care at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children is an example of how things can come together to streamline our approach and improve care for the better. A new Cancer and Infusion Center at Kapi‘olani will help broaden our oncology services, expand both of the infusion spaces for women and children, and open up even more opportunities for collaboration of specialists, advanced technology, research and clinical trials. Each year, we care for more than 1,000 breast cancer and pediatric cancer
patients who are diagnosed and treated at Kapi‘olani. That number only tells part of the story; it only covers a portion of those who use the lifesaving cancer services Kapi‘olani provides.
When patient needs are the catalyst for change, it makes these progressive steps that much more rewarding to our staff and donors. The field of medicine constantly evolves, and how we deliver care at Kapi‘olani Medical Center, Pali Momi Medical Center, Straub Medical Center and Wilcox Medical Center evolves in response –in large part because of you.
We sincerely thank you for every dollar you give toward maintaining that continuum of quality care. Your contributions bring ren ewed energy and inspire us to keep true to our mission of creating a healthier Hawai‘i.
With gratitude,
Dawn M. Dunbar Senior Vice President Philanthropy

Pediatric oncologist
Dr. Wade Kyono has
Kapiʻolani
At the Center of Care
About a thousand women and children are treated for cancer at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children every year. Now there are plans to create a new place of comfort and healing for them and their families.
A BATTLE WITH CANCER IS A JOURNEY. It is often fought month by month, week by week, and day by day by patients, their families and friends, and dedicated oncology doctors, nurses, technicians and medical teams across Hawai‘i.
For about a thousand women and children every year, that journey of care takes them to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. And soon, it will begin in a new, expanded, specialized Cancer and Infusion Center just for them. The new center will accommodate the latest technology and treatments for pediatric, breast and gynecologic cancers, as well as auto-immune and neuromuscular diseases, and other conditions that require lifesaving infusions.
Just as essential to the new space is a sense of comfort for women and keiki who may be facing years of treatments.
“We’re with the patient for a lifetime,” said Dr. Michael Carney, who has been treating gynecologic oncology patients at Kapi‘olani for more than 20 years. Unlike other cancer specialists, gynecologic oncologists are with patients throughout their specialized care – from diagnosis to surgery to any short- or longterm medical management. “With the new treatments, fortunately, we’re prolonging lives, which means we see people for a lot longer, and that’s a good thing.”
When it comes to kids, pediatric oncologists begin seeing some of their patients as infants and help them as they grow through stages of their care.
“I have patients in their 30s who will need transfusions every month for the rest of their lives,” said long-time pediatric hematologist and oncologist Dr. Wade Kyono.
“We all work together to support the family, because they become like our family ... we lean on each other.”
— DR. WADE KYONO, Kapi‘olani pediatric oncologist
Transfusions and infusion treatments take time. Patients on chemotherapy may need to come in daily for several days, or every few weeks for several months. In some cases of breast cancer, even in early stages, women may need weekly treatments for a year to prevent cancer from returning.
“It’s just overwhelming. Women can quickly go from seeing something unusual on their mammogram to having their lives completely turned upside down,” said Kapi‘olani breast medical oncologist Dr. Jami Fukui. “They’ll meet with a surgeon, a medical oncologist, a radiation oncologist, infusion nurses, other social workers, nurse navigators and medical assistants. A whole team is there to help them throughout their treatment.”
Treatments can be draining. Chemotherapy and infusions take a minimum of two to three hours, but the additional steps needed to ensure patients do not suffer dehydration or other side effects can lead to a seven-hour visit.
“It may take another four to six hours to give IV fluids before they are able to go home,” Dr. Kyono said. “Sometimes we need to monitor someone who just doesn’t feel well. Perhaps they can’t hold anything down, so we’re giving them IV fluid and antifungal medication for as long as we can during the day so they can go home instead of having to stay overnight in the
hospital. Then they may return the next day to do it all over again.”
For many women — who are often the primary caretakers for family or friends — those hours are still working hours.
“They’re still coordinating everything else they have to do for the day, it’s just that they’re doing it remotely and from the chemotherapy chair,” Dr. Fukui said. “The space we have is not really sufficient for someone to have a virtual meeting or conversation, or to bring their laptop. It is very tight, and if you are sharing the area with someone else, that’s really difficult.”
The current infusion area in the Women’s Cancer Center at Kapi‘olani consists of five bays separated by curtains. And in Hawai‘i, patients rarely come alone. Parents sit with their children who are undergoing treatment. Entire families come in to support their moms, grandmothers and aunties. Nurses will also often spend some time sitting with patients, talking story while gaining valuable insight into their emotional and physical conditions.

every year.
• 95% are in clinical trials.
• Kapi‘olani is a member of the National Cancer Institute-sponsored Children’s Oncology Group, which provides opportunities for young patients to receive the newest treatments in clinical trials.
“We’re definitely a little crowded,” Dr. Carney said. “Most days, we need space for seven or eight or nine people to receive infusions. We are treating everyone, but we can achieve a better experience.”
Downstairs, the Children’s Cancer Center has four rooms and three bays. The space can be challenging when the team is working with several kids who have received transplants or are undergoing chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, which alters patients’ own T cells so they bind to cancer cells and kill them. Both are immunocompromised and must be isolated from others.
Expanded space for patients, their families and friends, and the various medical teams involved in Kapi‘olani’s well-coordinated care are part of the initial plans for the new center. This includes nonclinical areas

• Kapi‘olani is the only women’s cancer facility in Hawai‘i that specializes in treating breast and gynecologic oncology patients.
• The center’s specialized team treats expectant mothers with cancer as well as provides in-utero treatment for rare conditions including neonatal hemochromatosis which affects a developing fetus’ liver.

where doctors and families can have sensitive and sometimes emotional conversations in a safe, private place. Other items include comfortable chairs and serene surroundings for patients and those supporting them through those long treatments, as well as dependable Wi-Fi. There are also ideas for play spaces for the youngest patients as well as children spending time with their mothers who are undergoing treatment.
Also, by bringing both cancer centers together, oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, pathologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, nutritionists, pharmacists and specialists will be able to more closely collaborate on comprehensive care plans aimed at one shared goal: turning cancer patients into cancer survivors.
“We all work together to support the family, because they become like our family,” Dr. Kyono said. “You share the good times, and during the bad times, we lean on each other.”
“I feel so privileged to meet these wonderful women at such a vulnerable time in their lives,” Dr. Fukui said. “The things they share and the insights they have from seeing the world in a different way motivates me every day.”
“I never cease to be amazed by these incredible patients, incredible specialists and incredible nurses. I have watched these nurses go so far beyond the call of duty to help patients and staff. It’s heartening,” Dr. Carney says. “It’s the people around me who make it possible to do what I really love to do.”

The Wait is Over
PA RENTS WERE READY. This was the day they had been waiting for — the day their child could finally get vaccinated against COVID-19. On Nov. 3, 2021, Hawai‘i Pacific Health became the first certified vaccination provider in the state to administer Pfizer’s vaccine for children 5 to 11 years old.
More than 600 keiki were vaccinated within the first two days after kids’ vaccine clinics opened at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, Straub Medical Center and Wilcox Medical Center.
Dr. Kristyn Nishimoto is a pediatrician at Kapi‘olani and a mom. Her son, Dustin, was 8 at the time; her daughter, Emi, was 5. They both received their COVID-19 vaccines as soon as it was available.
“It’s kind of like Christmas; we’ve been waiting so long,” Dr. Nishimoto said. “I’m so excited to have my kids vaccinated – to be able to protect them, our community and those who can’t get vaccinated. I like to tell my patients and their families I wouldn’t do anything for them that I wouldn’t do for my own kids.”
For many, getting their children protected against COVID-19 was a family affair. HPH wanted to find an efficient and comfortable way to vaccinate multiple members of the same ‘ohana. So in November of 2021, HPH in partnership with the state Department of Health, Honolulu Fire Department and Aloha Stadium Authority opened the first-ever Keiki Vax

Squad Drive-Thru at Aloha Stadium. Parents and kids could stay together in their vehicles during the process.
Kaleena Aoki said that’s exactly why her daughter chose to be vaccinated at the stadium.
“We did have some anxiety, but she wanted to get it,” Aoki said. “And we asked her where she would like to get it and she said she wanted to do it here (at the drive-thru) with Daddy, so they got it together.”
During the first weekend at Aloha Stadium, 833 adults and 471 keiki received their first dose of the vaccine. The next weekend, hundreds more did the same at HPH’s drive-thru clinic at Kapolei High School.
Then, just days after vaccinations for kids younger than 5 were approved, HPH brought back its clinics on O‘ahu and Kaua‘i so parents could finally obtain it for their youngest children as a way to protect their families and the community.

Dr. Dee Dee Wu, husband Brian, and sons Justin and Jacob visiting the Waimea Canyon State Park a few days after her lifesaving care at Wilcox Medical Center.
Incredible Recovery
In a moment, a fun family trip became an emergency situation and a doctor found herself on the other side of lifesaving care.
DR. DEE DEE WU’S TRIP TO KAUA‘I IN 2021 WAS MEMORABLE, BUT IT IS WHAT SHE DOESN’T RECALL THAT STANDS OUT MOST IN HER MIND.
“From the time I went into the water before waking up in the hospital, I don’t have any memory of what happened,” Dee Dee said.
The rheumatologist from New Jersey was visiting Anini Beach when her husband, Brian, spotted some turtles and invited her and their sons to snorkel with him. As they swam in, something went wrong.“I've snorkeled many times before, but when I didn’t join them, my husband swam toward me and found me unconscious,” Dee Dee said.
Brian and their 13-year-old son, Justin, started to bring her to shore. An off-duty lifeguard who happened to be nearby and another man, who had a flotation device, got her to the beach where Kaua‘i lifeguards immediately started CPR.
Paramedics rushed Dee Dee to Wilcox Medical Center’s Emergency Department (ED). Emergency medicine physician Dr. Thomas Del Ninno was among the first to treat her.
“I focused on optimizing Dee Dee’s resuscitation and then providing her ventilation,” Dr. Del Ninno said. “Immediately, the respiratory therapists helped manage her ventilator and kept a close watch on her. We also placed an
arterial catheter in to continuously monitor her blood pressure to prevent brain damage.”
With her medical background, Dee Dee recognizes the critical steps taken to save her life. “From being in the intensive care unit to being intubated for 16 hours and then leaving Wilcox three days later, it’s a pretty amazing turnaround,” she said.
Wilcox teams treat about one or two near-drowning patients every month. Dee Dee's case is one of several being studied in Hawai‘i as a possible instance of rapid onset pulmonary endema, or ROPE. ROPE can occur while snorkeling or

scuba diving. Negative pressure is generated in the chest by breathing through a narrowed tube, which can result in the infusion of fluids into the lungs. “It’s definitely a different experience being on the receiving end of health care,” Dee Dee said. “But I never felt scared or abandoned as a patient. I could not have asked for a better outcome really. I’m eternally grateful to everybody who was involved.”
Dee Dee says she is back to her regular exercise routine and is looking forward to making new memories during her family’s next trip to Kaua‘i, hopefully soon.
On a Good Note
Dee Dee's son, Jacob, celebrated Wilcox Medical Center with his music. Jacob has been playing piano since he was 7. Now 17, he held a virtual piano recital fundraiser that raised more than $13,000 in donations for Wilcox, the Kauai Lifeguard Association and Life’s Bridges.

Room to Flow
WHEN DR. MONTY DOWNS JOINED WILCOX MEDICAL CENTER, THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT CONSISTED OF A SINGLE ROOM.
He began in 1972 when just 27,000 people called Kaua‘i home. There were no computers or pagers. The small team of on-duty staff had to use a phone to call doctors in when a patient showed up in need.
What a difference 50 years makes.
In May, Dr. Downs played his guitar and harmonica for the blessing of Wilcox’s new, technologically advanced Emergency and Trauma Department. The project was the first structural renovation since the official department opened in 1996. During the 20 months of work, the Emergency Department remained open 24 hours a day, seven days a week — ensuring that Kaua‘i families and visitors could rely on Wilcox for care when they needed it most.
At the center of the new ED are two trauma resuscitation suites. The suites feature ample space for the latest equipment and have doors double the size of those on previous rooms, which will help increase the efficiency of care at Kaua‘i’s only Level III Trauma Center.
“They’re much larger and more open so we can easily move patients, equipment and trauma teams in and out,” said Wilcox emergency medicine physician Dr. Spencer Smith.
Three negative-pressure rooms will keep air from flowing out into shared spaces, an important safety feature when working with infectious disease cases. New care rooms for pediatric and OB-GYN cases are outfitted with specialized equipment for these patients. A dedicated room for behavioral and mental health patients includes telehealth capabilities so Wilcox staff and specialists from across the HPH system can engage with those who need their help.
Generous community donations funded the $5.1 million project aimed at serving Garden Isle people world-class care for the next 50 years.
“So much has changed for the better in this newly renovated department,” Dr. Smith said, “but it’s the same people with the same heart and commitment to our community.”
“There are so many things that are out of our control,” said Kaua‘i County Mayor Derek Kawakami at the blessing, “but we can be confident that in the darkest of our hours, this Emergency Department will be our beacon of hope.”

Supercharging the Future
THIRTY YEARS AFTER HURRICANE INIKI
KNOCKED OUT POWER TO THE ENTIRE ISLAND
OF KAUA‘I, three new one-megawatt generators will now keep the lights on through any emergency at Wilcox Medical Center.
“We always want to be prepared for the unexpected, and these generators are essential to caring for our patients when they need us most,” said Jen Chahanovich, president and CEO of Wilcox Medical Center and CEO of Kaua’i Medical Clinic.
Iniki was one of Hawai‘i’s worst natural disasters, causing an estimated $1.8 billion in damage in 1992. The storm also battered Kaua‘i’s power grid, leaving some parts of the island without electricity for several months. Wilcox treated dozens of people injured during the hurricane. Now the only Level III Trauma Center on the island, Wilcox receives an average of 25,000 emergency department visits every year. The three new generators will ensure critical operations can continue and patients will receive uninterrupted care, even during the next natural disaster emergency.
“We’re seeing large storms come through,” said Larry Kanda, disaster mitigation planner for the
Hawai‘i Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA). “Hurricane Iniki was a Category 3 and Hurricane Douglas in 2019 was a Category 4. These generators are a high priority for Kaua‘i.”
In January, a blessing was held for the generators, which pack three times the power of the medical center’s previous 500-kilowatt machines. More advanced, automated technology monitors and confirms the power producers are running efficiently. In addition to supplying energy to the entire facility, the generators will support current and future expansion efforts. This includes new behavioral health and infection control areas, as well as pediatric rooms which opened this year in the renovated Emergency Department and Trauma Center.

The $13 million generator project was made possible through a multi-level partnership. Hawai‘i Pacific Health funded $9 million. The other $4 million came from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, thanks to the help of HI-EMA.
The retired generators aren’t going to waste. They were donated to the County of Kaua‘i and will serve as backup units for the county’s wastewater service.

Developing a Health Care Campus of the Future
More than 100 years after a surgeon introduced the groundbreaking idea of treating entire Hawai‘i families in a single space, Straub Medical Center is building on its legacy and looking toward the next century of care.
FLEXIBLE. FORWARDTHINKING. TRANSFORMATIONAL. These are just a few words to describe the redevelopment of Straub Medical Center. One hundred years after “The Clinic” opened in Dr. George F. Straub’s two-story home on Beretania Street, Straub’s team broke ground for new facilities for the next century of health care.
The project will be more than just a rebuilding of the medical center. The new health care campus will be nearly triple the existing size, extending the block of South King Street across from Thomas Square. But, more importantly, it will provide the space, tools and resources necessary to address all aspects of patient care, from prevention and treatment to access and affordability. A key part of the
“The new Straub will not only mean that patients can get everything they need here at home; it also will offer the best and brightest physicians and staff the facilities and technology they require to provide the best care possible.”

ongoing planning for the 15-year project has been creating areas that are not only ideal for the needs of both patients and Straub’s teams now, but are able to transform to accommodate new technology and practices for decades to come.
“Our vision is a health care facility that provides us flexibility,” said Art Gladstone, Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s executive vice president and chief strategy officer.
That flexibility extends to every aspect of the new campus, starting with the first phase — the parking garage. A new one will include 1,650 stalls — more than four times the current 400 — and eliminate columns for better visibility. Easyto-read digital signs will show drivers how many full-size spaces are available on each floor. But the thoughtful planning goes beyond

just parking.
“The new parking structure has the capability for six of its floors to be converted for clinical services, if the need arises,” Gladstone said.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us that we need to be nimble and adapt to unforeseen circumstances.”
The second phase of construction centers on a new medical center. The additional building will be more spacious, allowing for larger patient exam and operating rooms, a bigger

emergency department, adjustable design elements for patients in various circumstances, areas for complex care and chronic disease prevention programs, and team-based care settings with rooms specifically for telehealth so more patients can access quality health care.
The building will also include the latest equipment and technologies that will increase efficiency and reduce hospital stays and patient costs.
“Straub has a stellar reputation, and we wants to ensure that it retains

that standing by moving forward with an aggressive, state-of-the-art redevelopment that will serve the people of Hawai‘i for the next 100 years,” Gladstone said.
The third phase focuses on outdoor spaces, including a porte cochère for easy and accessible patient drop-off. The final part of the redevelopment will be the renovation of the existing Straub Medical Center and Strode Medical Building. “The Clinic” opened in the Strode Building in 1933 at the corner of what is now Hotel Street and Ward Avenue. Although Straub’s new facility is much larger than the two-story, shingle-stone home where five doctors first teamed up to treat the people of Hawai‘i, the mission remains unchanged. Dr. Straub set out to create a clinic “where the patients always come first and where the health needs of the entire family could be met under one roof.”
“Dr. Straub said it in the 1920s, and his vision guides everything we do today,” said Ray Vara, Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s president & CEO. “The new Straub will not only mean that patients can get everything they need here at home; it also will offer the best and brightest physicians and staff the facilities and technology they require to provide the best care possible.”
Dr. George F. Straub, a surgeon, opened “The Clinic” on Jan. 2, 1921, with four other physicians from different specialties: Dr. Guy Champion Milnor, obstetrics and gynecology; Dr. Arthur Jackson, internal medicine; Dr. Howard Clarke, eye, ear, nose and throat; and Dr. Eric Fennel, pathology.

Technology at the Heart of Change
IT HAD ALREADY HAPPENED ONCE. THEN BECKY GETSCHMANN-PADUA'S HEART STOPPED AGAIN. Medical staff, fortunately, were able to revive her. Days later, Becky was stable enough to be discharged, but she knew her multiple health problems made her next steps in treatment challenging.
“I remember sitting there, crying and thinking that this is it. I won’t be there to care for my 11-year-old granddaughter, who has no one else,” Becky said.
Becky began experiencing heart problems when she was 59 years old. She was diagnosed with aortic valve stenosis — when the opening to the aortic valve narrows and restricts blood flow to the heart. It is both common and serious. Surgeons inserted a bioprosthetic valve from cow tissues to prolong her life, but the operation was followed by health challenges.
Now, following her third hospital admission in just a few years, Becky was concerned she was running out of options. A decade ago, that may have been true. But now, Straub Medical Center’s state-of-the-art hybrid suite makes it possible for
medical teams to do minimally invasive procedures, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement, known as TAVR.
Traditionally, valve replacements required open heart surgery, meaning some older patients would not qualify as good candidates. TAVR allows doctors to insert a man-made valve through smaller incisions. The natural flow of blood moves it into place where it can regulate blood flow. Straub physicians performed their first TAVR procedure in the Clarence T.C. Ching Heart Center in 2018. In the beginning, the collaborative cardiovascular team completed two a week. Soon, they were able to perform five to six weekly in the center’s newly renovated cardiovascular catheterization labs. In 2021, Straub’s Heart Center teams completed their 500th TAVR procedure.
Becky was one of those patients. Cardiologist Dr. Jared Oyama evaluated her case and within a week, she was at Straub for her procedure.
“I woke up and was alive,” she
said. “I could not believe it. They sent me to a hospital room for 24 hours and I was discharged the next day.
“I felt so comfortable. The doctors, nurses and staff were all so comforting and positive even as we knew the procedure may be difficult and the outcome was uncertain.”
Now, Becky is doing well. She spends time with her dogs, enjoys time with her husband and celebrates milestones with her family, like her granddaughter’s 13th birthday this year. In her front yard grows a reminder of her journey — a tree her husband sculpted into a heart surrounded by red ti leaves that Becky dedicates to Dr. Oyama and the cardiac team for all the hearts they have saved. And she has a message for donors who make it all possible.
“Without continued contributions, I and many others would not be alive today,” she said. “I cannot thank you enough.”

When the hybrid suite opened four years ago it immediately elevated Straub's heart care services. Today, the suite that allows heart teams to move seamlessly from surgical to vascular and cardiac catheterization procedures in a single space continues to allow Straub’s experienced staff to treat complicated cases as efficiently as possible.
Here are some of the procedures possible because of the hybrid suite:
• TAVR/structural heart procedures.
• Repairing aneurysms in the abdominal aorta, thoracic aorta and iliac artery as well as stent grafts and hybrid coronary revascularization, which is a minimally invasive treatment for coronary artery disease.

Coming Full Circle
The accident occurred in just seconds. But the recovery ahead would take more than a year, creating a bond between Pali Momi surgeons and a bicyclist who suddenly needed their care.
ONE EARLY SUNDAY MORNING IN SUMMER 2019, GLENN TANGO SET OUT ON A BIKE RIDE FROM HIS HOME IN WAIKELE. As Glenn pedaled along Managers Drive, he spotted something on the side of the road. He swerved to avoid it but lost control of his bike.
The tires slid out from under him and Glenn fell. The landing was hard. Glenn got up and checked for injuries. He felt a small cut near his eye and was slightly sore on his left side, but overall he felt OK.
A couple saw Glenn fall and called 911, just to be safe. When the ambulance arrived and EMTs began to check Glenn’s vitals, he called his wife and asked her to pick him up (and his bike). She urged him to go to the hospital for a full checkup.
Knowing he wouldn’t win the argument, Glenn started climbing into the ambulance. Mid-step, he turned pale and his blood pressure dropped.
The ambulance rushed Glenn to Pali Momi Medical Center and within 30 minutes, he was in the Emergency Department being prepped for a CAT scan.
The images revealed Glenn’s
left kidney had ruptured. He was bleeding internally and needed surgery, fast.
Pali Momi Trauma Medical Director Dr. Maria Ver and surgeon Dr. Richard Inae both were at the medical center that day and performed the procedure necessary to save Glenn’s life.
“I believe Glenn was and still is blessed. He needed a trauma hospital, and Pali Momi was ready to care for him,” Dr. Inae said.
The team removed his kidney,
but Glenn’s journey to recovery had just begun. Due to the initial trauma, his intestines and soft tissue in his abdomen were severely swollen, which required additional surgeries, blood transfusions and a lengthy rehabilitation process.
Glenn stayed in Pali Momi’s intensive care unit for three weeks. Though he was away from home and his family, Glenn remained positive thanks to the caring nurses and aides who visited him each day.

“They’re all so nice!” he said. “Dr. Ver and Dr. Inae are very personable, and Dr. Inae is a well-experienced trauma surgeon. I was very happy with the care I got from Pali Momi.”
“We’re lucky here at Pali Momi that we have a culture of teamwork and collaboration in which people are always willing to help,” Dr. Ver said. “It’s rewarding as a physician to know that the program that you developed works.”
A year later, Glenn needed hernia surgery. He returned to Pali Momi and his trusted surgeon, Dr. Inae.
“A bond forms between

the patient and the physician, especially when it comes to surgery,” Dr. Inae said. “The patient and the patient’s family build trust in the surgeon. In Glenn’s case, this trust was accelerated by a life-or-death situation and was further reinforced during his recovery process.”
Like many who call Central and West O‘ahu home, Glenn’s connection to the medical center runs deep. He grew up “right down the road” on Pali Momi Street and recalls visiting Dr. Joseph Nishimoto — Pali Momi’s beloved founder — at his plantation-style clinic in Pearl City.
“It was just a one-doctor operation with his nurses. He was a pretty down-to-earth guy, friendly guy,” Glenn said.
He and his family continue to hold ties to Dr. Joe and Pali Momi to this day.
“My family has a lot of experiences over here,” Glenn said. “My sister has made use of the Emergency Department in the last few years, and my mother came here many years ago.”
“It is wonderful to know that Glenn trusts that Pali Momi will give him the highest quality of care to ensure he has the best outcome he can have,” Dr. Inae said.
Glenn officially “graduated” from follow-up care in October 2020. Though happy to see his patient return to full health, the surgeon knew he’d miss Glenn’s visits and his “tough” but jovial personality.
“He was a big part of our general surgery clinic family for 16 months, and we still remember him and will continue remembering him for years to

come,” Dr. Inae said.
Today, Glenn has resumed his active lifestyle. When he’s not at work, he enjoys taking in the arts and going to the theater with his wife, Elizabeth. Glenn walks a few miles every day and spends weekends stand-up paddling at Ala Moana Beach Park.
He’s also back in the bike saddle, regularly joining group rides along the Pearl Harbor Bike Path.
As a token of gratitude, Glenn and Elizabeth sent a donation and a note to honor his surgeons and his nurse Marissa for their exceptional care during Glenn’s unexpected time of need.
“We appreciate when people and foundations support our community. Hawai‘i Pacific Health and Pali Momi Medical Center are big parts of that,” he said.

Supporting Emergency Care
TO PARAPHRASE A FAMILIAR ADAGE, IT TAKES A COMMUNITY TO GROW A HOSPITAL.
At Pali Momi Medical Center, it is often small donations from people in the community that add up to large impacts.
That was the story behind the newly renovated Emergency Department waiting room.
“The new design has really allowed us to focus more attention on the patients coming in and helped us work more cohesively as a team,” said ED Manager Aaron Taylor. “It’s still a small area, but we have distinct areas where we can triage as a team in order to get patients evaluated quicker and give priority to those who need it most.”
Every minute counts when it comes to treating injuries in the ED. So much of the Emergency and Trauma Care donations to Pali Momi go toward building more efficiencies, be it through purchasing equipment to streamline the diagnostic process,
or creating training opportunities for staff so they’re best prepared to treat whatever comes through the ED doors.
“There are always new procedures, new ways of treating old illnesses, and we as health care providers always have to be aware of what’s going on in the health care environment,” Taylor said. “Every gift makes a difference.”
“We need to ensure that we strongly support these types of services so that we can provide for the much-needed care for our ‘ohana,” said Wade Gesteuyala, who works in West O‘ahu and has given consistently to Pali Momi’s Emergency and Trauma programs since 2019.
“Pali Momi’s centralized location and the emergency services provided are critical as the population growth on this side of the island continues,” Gesteuyala said. “I am honored to be able to contribute.”

An Enduring Journey

He was just 7 years old when he fought a battle for his life. Now 2022 Kapi‘olani Children's Miracle Network Champion Xander Cabales is turning his journey into a message of hope for others.
XANDER CABALES SAYS HIS MISSION IN LIFE IS TO INSPIRE OTHERS.
“It’s important for me to talk about all of the things that Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children did for me to get where I am right now,” the 16-year-old said.
Nine years ago, Xander experienced a life-changing event. He had just finished the second grade and was enjoying his summer playing with friends and his brothers.
“Xander was super energetic. He was funny, outgoing — the kid who would get up on stage and dance,” said his mom, Laura.
Then, the 7-year-old came down with a fever. His parents gave him overthe-counter medicine, but by the next morning, Xander’s fever had spiked to 105 degrees and a severe rash covered his body. Then, the skin around his eyes and mouth began to slough off and his breathing became shallow.
Laura and her husband, Ronnie, took Xander to a nearby emergency department. But even after doctors diagnosed and treated him, his parents knew something still wasn’t right.
“The rapid course the illness was taking made us think, hey, this is something worse than what they’re telling us,” Ronnie said.
They took Xander to the Kapi‘olani Medical Center Emergency
Department for a second opinion. There, infectious disease specialist Dr. Marian Melish diagnosed Xander with the life-threatening skin disorder Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and, later, toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), a severe form of SJS that only affects about one in a million people each year.
“It was such a shock. I had never heard of it," Laura said. "Knowing that not only would he not come home, but that he may possibly not make it through the day ... there are no words. It was probably the lowest we'd ever been.”
Xander was placed into a medical coma and spent four weeks on life support in the Kapi‘olani Pediatric Intensive Care Unit before showing signs of responsiveness.
“Toxic epidermal necrolysis is a condition that is rare, but not so rare that we didn’t already have a protocol at Kapi‘olani for dealing with it,” Dr. Melish said. “We had been quite successful in the past by treating patients as if they had a major burn. This allows the damaged skin to heal. It was important to treat his airway as well, which meant that his throat needed to have a tube

put in it to help him breathe.”
“As parents, you don’t know what to expect,” Ronnie said. “But after seeing how they were taking care of him, that spoke volumes to us. It was like, we’ve got him; you guys don’t have to worry.”
Due to the infection, Xander lost 60% of his skin. His eyes, skin, lungs and esophagus were severely damaged. His road to recovery required the care of several specialists at Kapi‘olani, including ophthalmologist Dr. David Young.
2022 Kapi‘olani CMN Champion Xander Cabales with (left to right) his mother, Laura; brothers Tyce and Jaiden; and father, Ronnie.

“Given the rarity of this disease and how severe it can be for children, this was the place to be,” Dr. Young said. “To be able to coordinate all the different specialties — infectious disease, ophthalmology, the nurses who specialize in children’s health — this is what it takes to care for a child in Hawai‘i.”
As his health improved, Xander needed to relearn how to hold his head up, sit, walk, talk and eat. The rehabilitation and Child Life teams at Kapi‘olani used video games to motivate him to continue his difficult but necessary therapy.
“I often felt weak, so being able to play video games at Kapi‘olani was something I could enjoy that was helping me get better,” Xander says.

journey he’s been through,” Laura said. “He’s proud of his scars. That reassures me that we should be the same way — embrace our imperfections that are not really imperfections. They make us unique, and they just show how strong he is.”
His resilience made Xander a natural choice for Kapi‘olani’s 2022 Children’s Miracle Network Champion.
“The medical staff … gave us Xander back. They saved our son.”
— RONNIE CABALES, Xander’s dad
Xander’s family attributes his miraculous recovery to the team of Kapi‘olani specialists who cared for their son.
“The medical staff instilled hope in us,” Ronnie said. “They gave us Xander back. They saved our son.”
Xander is now in his junior year of high school. He enjoys jiujitsu and expressing his creativity through detailed drawings of dinosaurs, monsters and superheroes.
“He is so proud of who he is and the
“Xander represents just how difficult some of these medical problems can be and how it takes a special place and a special person to be able to come out of that as well as he did,” Young said. “Xander is a champion — he’s Kapi‘olani’s Champion in being able to showcase all the good things that can happen here.”
As Xander embarks on his Champion year, he is most excited to share his message of positivity, kindness and resilience with others.
“Most people may not know me as of right now, but through this, a lot of people can understand my story, and they can understand what a lot of kids in the hospital may have gone through,” Xander said. “Being able to show how much Kapi‘olani did and what they accomplished to help save me — that’s a really big part for me in being a Champion.”
XANDER’S STORY OF STRENGTH AND PERSEVERANCE IS CAPTURED IN HIS CHAMPION PIN, which the aspiring young artist designed himself.
“It really symbolizes different things that may not be pointed out unless you knew the context behind it,” he said.
• Sunglasses are Xander’s trademark accessory, and not just because they look cool. Because of SJS/ TEN, Xander developed photophobia, or sensitivity to light. Dark sunglasses help protect his eyes.
• The cracks in the lens represent Xander’s scars, which he has all over his body. Xander is proud of the marks, which represent his strength and what he has overcome. He encourages other kids to be proud of their own “battle scars.”
• Blue and black are Xander’s favorite colors. Blue also is the color for SJS/TEN awareness.
• The “X” represents the unique spelling of Xander’s name.
• The black border symbolizes the protection and never-ending support of his family.
“It is truly indicative of who he is and how strong of a person he is, especially through this journey,” said his dad, Ronnie.

SOMETHING SPECIAL AT NEIMAN MARCUS IN MAY. During Mother’s Day weekend, the store donated 10% of all in-store purchases to the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. Neiman Marcus has been a consistent supporter of Kapi‘olani for the past decade, but this fundraiser spoke right to the heart of the store’s community.

CLE MOMENTS
“The pandemic posed unique challenges for many of us. Mothers we knew, both our employees and clients, had to work especially hard to help with their children’s care and education while schools were closed,” said Erin Isa, Neiman Marcus general manager. “This was our way of celebrating them and to give back to Kapi’olani Medical Center, which provides care for so many of the women and children in our state.”
A special guest greeted shoppers during the event. Kapi‘olani’s 2020-2021 Children’s Miracle Network Champion, Haumea Friel, shared smiles and her custom-designed pin and still had time to find a new dress!
The shop-for-a-cause event raised $10,000 for Kapi‘olani kids.
GRABBING YOUR FAVORITE SUMMERTIME SIP MAY HAVE HELPED GIVE BACK TO KAPI‘OLANI CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK IN 2021. Coca-Cola Bottling of Hawai‘i, LLC led two campaigns for CMN. The first was held in partnership with Walmart’s annual CMN fundraiser and featured special displays with signs noting that Coca-Cola would donate 25 cents for every Coca-Cola beverage purchased in the stores. The company then held a similar campaign at Times Supermarkets, with money from purchases of Powerade, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Dr. Pepper and other drinks going to the Kapi‘olani Radiothon for Kids. All those cents added up. Coca-Cola contributed $8,780 to Kapi‘olani CMN.

Making a Change
PEOPLE COME FOR SATISFYING BOWLS OF CURRY TOPPED WITH THEIR CHOICE OF MORE THAN 30 TOPPINGS. But in 2021, customers of Curry House Coco Ichibanya could bring comfort to others with just a few coins. The eatery’s Ala Moana Center location set up a canister at the cash register and encouraged people to add their spare change to the collection for keiki at Kapi‘olani. The warmth of island diners shone through. In just two months, the team at Curry House Coco Ichibanya raised $2,917 to donate during the Kapi‘olani Radiothon for Kids. This is just the beginning of their giving. The restaurant is committed to continue supporting Kapi‘olani CMN in the future.

15 Years of Giving Kapi‘olani Radiothon for Kids
SINCE 2007, THE KAPI‘OLANI RADIOTHON FOR KIDS HAS RAISED MORE THAN $3 MILLION FOR KAPI‘OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN. But the 15th anniversary event in 2021 hit a new record. In just two days, businesses, families and individuals gave $575,615 in a completely virtual event, surpassing the previous record set during the first year of the pandemic by nearly $150,000.
KSSK radio personalities shared the stories of Kapi‘olani patients and their families, physicians and more from the iHeartRadio studios while Kapi‘olani staff members volunteered to take donation calls to the medical center. Although they were separated by miles for safety reasons, everyone felt the connection of working together to help local families.
“This is what aloha is,” said Scotty B, KSSK radio personality. “Recently, in one way or another [because of the pandemic], all of us have been touched by tragedy or challenge and a helpless feeling, which kind of puts us in the frame of mind of what goes on at Kapi‘olani every day. The Radiothon is a very precise way that you can give and do something. It’s about giving even when you don’t really have a lot of extra, because someone else needs it more.”
The event was full of emotional and unexpected moments. One of the largest surprises was a $100,000 donation from UHA Health Insurance, which is the biggest gift in Kapi‘olani Radiothon history. UHA has supported Kapi‘olani for more than a decade, including as

a Kapi‘olani Radiothon sponsor and and phone bank volunteer for the annual event.
“The work that Kapi‘olani does touches so many of us,” said Suzanne Eugenio, UHA director of marketing. “Our associates really have a heart for giving, and this gives them an opportunity to extend their gratitude and contribute in a meaningful way.”
“When this Radiothon began, nobody had any idea it was going to get this big,” said Michael W. Perry, KSSK radio personality, who has been part of the on-air fundraiser since it began. “What an amazing ride this has been!”
Presenting sponsor D. Suehiro Electric, Inc. continued its years of giving in 2021. Part of its sponsorship dollars went to creating a school supply station for Kapi‘olani’s Brain Station, a cheery classroom space hospitalized kids can use to keep up with their school work while undergoing treatment.
Additional donations from businesses including Swinerton Builders, Bank of Hawaii, First Hawaiian Bank, AlohaCare, Windward Auto Group and others funded a bookshelf on wheels for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It was filled with 150 books in honor of the event’s 15th anniversary, as well as other items on Kapi‘olani’s wish list such as giant remotecontrolled cars for kids in the Rehabilitation Department and plush versions of Ruby, Kapi‘olani’s hospital facility dog, for kids to cuddle with. Farmers Insurance Hawai‘i awarded a grant for the critical care transport program to provide lifesaving transportation for infants and children throughout the state.

THE JN AUTOMOTIVE GROUP SHIFTED INTO OVERDRIVE TO SUPPORT HAWAI‘I’S KEIKI. JN Automotive Group donated $20,000 to Kapi‘olani in 2021 through its “Drive for Heart” campaign. For every new vehicle or motorcycle sold at a JN dealership, $100 went to Hawai‘i’s only maternity, newborn and pediatric specialty medical center. “Our company and team are driven to make a difference,” said Brad Nicolai, president of JN Automotive Group and Kapi‘olani

Health Foundation board member.
“Kapi‘olani plays a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of Hawai‘i’s families. We are grateful to our employees for their passion to help others and sincerely thank the community for making this gift possible.” The company has been a supporter of Kapi‘olani since 2015.

A Sisterhood of Strength & Support
WOMEN ARE SOME OF THE STRONGEST ADVOCATES FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH, whether they are looking out for close friends or relating to others. That sense of comradery is at the root of three donations to the Women’s Ambulatory Cancer Center (WACC) at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.
Wahine O Wai‘alae (WOW) believes girl power gains strength in numbers. The women’s golf group has 136 active members who are committed to supporting Kapi‘olani. Each year, the group hosts a golf tournament, WOW for the Cure, to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. While the pandemic restricted tournament play in 2021, WOW members still made their benefit count.
“We asked our members if they wanted to make voluntary donations in any amount and were proud of their response,” said Tanya Watumull, who served as the 2021 WOW president. “We raised $3,000. Supporting the Women’s Cancer Center is dear to our hearts.”
Kelsey Darling squeezes out all she can from fundraising opportunities to support Kapi‘olani. The “chief lemon squeezer” for the Make Lemonade Project created her notfor-profit after experiencing her husband’s challenging battle with cancer. The mission
is to bring some joy and comfort to those diagnosed with cancer.
Darling uses proceeds from her fundraisers to create and fill a “lemonade stand” at the WACC that offers patients and staff free, heartfelt gifts donated by individuals and businesses from around the world. Some of the items are especially comforting for patients, including mastectomy pillows for post-breast surgery or port pillows to make IV treatments more bearable.
Another one-woman powerhouse doing all she can to help the WACC is Leni Knight. The artist is a breast cancer survivor who received treatment at Kapi‘olani. Knight contributes a portion of sales of her paintings to cancer care at the WACC. She says her art is as therapeutic for her as it is for those who buy it.
“In almost all my paintings, I combine classical realism and abstract expressionism to tell relatable stories of strength, hope and faith despite adversity,” Knight said.
Three stories, three different ways that Hawai‘i women are providing powerful support for other women.

SHOPPERS KNOW THAT EVERY TIME COWBELLS RING, a generous donor has given wings to the Hilo Walmart’s fundraiser for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. Four times in the past five years, the Hilo location raised more than any other Walmart in the nation for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. CMN President and CEO Teri Nestel flew to Hawai‘i Island to present a Golden Cowbell Award created specifically for the team known for ringing cowbells and shouting “mahalo” for every donation.
“Everyone from security officers to vendors for Pepsi and Coke always ask how they can help. We tell them, every time you hear that bell ring, you scream ‘mahalo,’ and they do,” said Hilo Walmart Manager Mark Roberts. “The energy is so fun and it makes everyone feel inspired.”
In 2021, Hilo Walmart raised $71,784, helping Hawai‘i’s 13 Walmart and Sam’s Club locations become the top fundraising market in the nation with a total of $383,060.83 donated to Kapi‘olani. Money raised went to purchase a portable ultrasound machine that allows the medical team to perform several procedures for newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit without moving the babies from their beds.
“Kapi‘olani relies on donations for the lifesaving care of local children, and Hawai‘i’s generous spirit always amazes and inspires us,” said Gidget Ruscetta, chief operating officer of Kapi‘olani Medical Center.

Acing the Round Up Campaign
WHETHER IT IS PENNIES OR QUARTERS, SMALL COINS GATHERED AT HAWAI‘I ACE HARDWARE LOCATIONS MAKE A BIG IMPACT FOR THE CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK (CMN).
Ace’s Round Up Campaign allows customers to round up their total to the next full dollar and donate their change to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. In 2021, the campaign raised $165,112. Employees take great pride in the annual collection because it highlights the specialty care Kapi‘olani provides kids in Hawai‘i and the Pacific Region.
“It is very exciting to see the results of the Round Up Campaign,” said Cory Chagami, vice president of operations for HouseMart. “It truly is a team effort. All of the associates and team members at our 22 stores statewide are supportive in asking customers for their round-up donations.”
The Round Up Campaign was just one way that Ace Hardware stores in Hawai‘i raised money for the state’s only CMN hospital. Another $38,000 rolled in from the 24th annual Ace Hardware Shootout on Hawai‘i Island. The 2021 golf fundraiser featured a special guest — former MLB AllStar and Maui’s own Shane Victorino played in honor of Kapi‘olani. "The Flyin’ Hawaiian" called it a gratifying homecoming.
“Being here, it’s in my own backyard,” Victorino said. “Getting an opportunity to raise money in this beautiful place to help a local charity — I’m definitely 100% in every time they ask!”
Overall, Ace Hardware donated $312,046 in 2021 to the Kapi‘olani CMN. Part of that gift came as an Ace Foundation Helping Hands Grant that paid for a much-needed new transport ventilator and monitor for the Critical Care Transport team.

Investing in Women’s Health
AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGIST AND AUTHOR ANNE WILSON SCHAEF ONCE OBSERVED, “Good health is not something we can buy. However, it can be an extremely valuable savings account.”
First Hawaiian Bank employees and retirees are certainly making a long-term investment into the future of health care at Pali Momi Medical Center.
For eight consecutive years, FHB employees have selected the Pali Momi Women’s Center as one of the beneficiaries of their Kōkua Mai Campaign. Launched in 2007, the annual employee giving program allows current and former employees to provide financial support to local charities of their choice.
“More than 63% of our employees are women, and a majority of them live in Central and West O‘ahu, so many of them have taken advantage of the services at the Pali Momi Women’s Center,” said Iris Matsumoto, FHB’s executive vice president of human resources.
As of June 2022, FHB employees have given a total of $122,200 to the Women's Center, beginning with a donation in 2014 that allowed Pali Momi to create a Patient Resource Room. This private space affords breast cancer survivors a dedicated, comfortable area to try on wigs, get makeovers and do fittings for a post-surgical specialty bra.
In 2021, 145 employees from branches across the island – including ‘Ewa Beach, Pearl City, Waipahu and downtown Honolulu – pledged a remarkable $22,468 to the Women’s Center. Pali Momi recently drew upon these funds to purchase a new stereotactic biopsy table, an important piece of equipment necessary to help identify many cancers early, when they are most treatable.
“We are only successful because of our community, so this is our way to give back,” Matsumoto said. “This one comes from the heart — this is just another way we can support Pali Momi Women’s Center.”

IT BEGAN WITH EIGHT FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS OF MEL AND LYNN TANIOKA TEEING OFF TO HELP OTHERS. Now, 36 tournaments later, hundreds of golfers hit the greens every year for Tanioka’s Charity Golf Tournament, which raises tens of thousands of dollars for local charities. This year, proceeds from the tournament’s lucky number drawing went to the Emergency and Trauma Care Fund at Pali Momi Medical Center.
“We are just blessed we have all these friends to help us,” said Tanioka’s Seafoods and Catering Founder and President Mel Tanioka. “Year after year, the same people come out — 200 people — and nobody quits. Everyone’s there.”

The Tanioka family also donated $5,000 each to Straub Medical Center's redevelopment fund and Kapiʻolani Medical Center's future Infusion Center and Cancer Center.
An additional $7,500, some raised from holiday shopping at Tanioka’s online marketplace, was also gifted to Pali Momi’s Emergency and Trauma Care Fund.
“It is such a family hospital,” said Jasmine Tanioka, CFO of Tanioka’s and a Pali Momi board member. “We love Pali Momi. Our whole family, we’ve been there. They’ve taken care of each of us in our time of need.”

A Team Effort
WHEN FLAMES GROW OUT OF CONTROL, WE TRUST HONOLULU’S FIREFIGHTERS TO SAVE LIVES. But once the fire is extinguished, it is up to medical experts to begin the intensive, intricate work of helping burn victims heal.
That is why the Honolulu Firefighters Foundation continues to raise money for Straub Medical Center’s Burn Unit, the only specialized unit of its kind in Hawai‘i and the Pacific Region. In 2022, the foundation donated $75,000, the third such gift since 2014. In many cases, insurance plans do not completely cover the cost of care, so donations from HFF and other community partners are essential to ensuring patients receive the treatment they need.
Recently, funds went to state-of-theart controls that allow the staff to better regulate the temperature and pressure of the sanitized water used for washing burns. The daily treatment helps reduce the risk of infection. Community donations also funded burn blankets and a warming cabinet to help guard against hypothermia, and specialized temperature-regulated burn care beds that redistribute weight to relieve pressure on the skin. Financial gifts also allow the unit’s doctors and staff to learn about the newest burn treatments, as well as provide training to first responders across the state.

A True Passion Project
GAIL MYERS WAS FIERCE: fiercely loyal, fiercely self-reliant and a fierce advocate for friends and family. The Alabama native retained her Southern manners and love of University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide, but poured her passionate nature into community cases in her chosen home of Hawaiʻi.
In 2014, she created the Gail Myers Fund for Vascular Medicine at Straub Medical Center to advance the work of her longtime doctor, HPH Chief of Vascular Surgery
Dr. Elna Masuda, vascular technologist Darcy Kessler and the team she credited with saving her
life twice through surgery. Even after Gail’s death in 2021, her legacy of giving continues. A generous portion of her estate will go toward Straub’s redevelopment plans.

“There was no doubt Gail had a big personality, but she also had a big heart,” said Darcy. “Her gifts, which she gave in honor of her family and her Straub family, will continue to make an impact on patients for decades to come.”
Left to right: Straub vascular technologist Darcy Kessler, the late Gail Myers and Straub vascular surgeon Dr. Elna Masuda in 2014.

Roping in $4K for Wilcox Health Foundation
TWO TEENS TURNED THEIR LOVE FOR RODEO INTO A CLASS PROJECT that roped in $4,000 for the Wilcox Health Foundation.
Casera Silva and Ki-yana Kanoho wanted to close out their senior year at Waimea High School with an event that would build their skills as problem-solvers and leaders. They found it by organizing the “Kickin’ Corona Benefit Rodeo.” The two students, who are also rodeo athletes, grabbed the project by the horns and decided all monies raised would go to another shared passion — health care, specifically supporting medical workers who selflessly served throughout the COVID19 pandemic.
“We wanted to do something for the people who have put others’ lives first before their own and give back to these workers
in appreciation for all they’ve done,” Silva said. They initially set out to raise $3,000 but were barreled over by the generous support of their Kaua‘i rodeo community, which included more than 50 participants who saddled up for the benefit rodeo in June 2022.
“We are so happy that we get to donate to such a great cause,” Silva said. “We hope this donation will help express our gratitude to all the dedicated health care workers who do so much, especially over the past two years.”

Next up for the recent high school graduates — pursuing careers in the medical field. Silva, an aspiring MRI technician, is at Central Arizona College studying radiology. Kanoho will be going to college in Washington to become a veterinarian.
Left to right: Wilcox Development Officer Andrew Bestwick, Wilcox President and CEO Jen Chahanovich, Casera Silva, her mom Elise Silva, Wilcox clinic assistant Shanlyn Mission and Joyce Silva.

Getting on Pace
STRESS TESTS CAN BE AT THE HEART OF ASSESSING CARDIAC ISSUES.
Monitoring heart rates, oxygen levels and blood pressure of people exercising on a treadmill is often a first step toward identifying and preventing potential heart problems. Now, thanks to generous gifts, Wilcox Medical Center cardiologists have a more efficient and safer way to help patients stay ahead of cardiac problems.
In 2021, Wilcox was able to replace its older workout machines with technologically advanced Cardiac Assessment System for Exercise Testing (CASE) equipment.
“The old treadmill was worn, noisy and occasionally broke down,” said Wilcox cardiologist Dr. John Funai. That could be a challenge for teams seeing more than 700 patients a year. “Not only is the new machine quiet and efficient, it allows cardiologists to monitor and store the patient's blood pressure and other information remotely. It makes these active stress tests even safer and easier for patients."
The digital connections on the stationary bicycle and two new treadmills also mean it is easier to keep records of patient measurements. In addition, the updated EKG software algorithms offer improved accuracy in measuring patients’ risk of heart disease.
Wilcox is the only facility on Kaua‘i that offers outpatient cardiology testing. With this new medically focused exercise equipment, even more Garden Isle patients can be sure they are on pace for a healthier life.

Aloha Inspire Readers,
Writing this magazine is always a joyful journey for us. Meeting patients touched by care, talking with donors who were moved to give by our supportive staff and services, and witnessing community members doing all they can to fundraise for our medical centers allows us to connect to the deeper purpose of philanthropy. People genuinely want to help.
It is through quality health care and true compassion for our community‘s needs that Hawai‘i Pacific Health (HPH) is creating a healthier Hawai‘i. We feel so fortunate to be able to document these moments in Inspire magazine, ranging from miracle babies to seniors with lifesaving second chances.
Contact us at Foundations@HawaiiPacificHealth.org. These stories inspire us because our biggest inspiration is you. 55
