Between gaming and gambling

IT’S EASY TO SAY GAMING, WHEN IT COMES TO ENTERTAINMENT: BUT IT’S ALWAYS BETTER TO SPECIFY WHETHER IT’S PURE GAMING OR GAMBLING. A NOTSO-SUBTLE DIFFERENCE THAT BECOMES CENTRAL IN THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SECTOR AND IN ITS REGULATION.

impossible to be completed within the 45 minutes of “live” discussion, and in the other two remote meetings that followed. And I won’t be able to exhaust it in this article either. Its ambiguity is already highlighted in the words themselves. It is easier in English, where at least there are two different words to distinguish them: gaming and gambling, even if they are exchanged every time, in search of a lighter and therefore more acceptable term, offered by the word gaming. A similar exchange applied more or less freely takes place in Italian between “gioco” and “gioco d’azzardo”, but given the lack of two separate words, it seems to me that the linguistic ambiguity reflects even more the general ambiguity between the two types of gaming. But that same linguistic ambiguity also extends to other aspects, especially the regulatory ones, which offer both advantages and disadvantages. The lack of clarity on the regulatory status on the one hand leads to possible negative consequences and unexpected risks in the case of an interpretation opposite to the one assumed, while on the other hand it opens the door to experimentation and, possibly, the introduc- tion of innovative models. We have observed an example of this in the United States, where fantasy sports have contributed to the opening of the legal sports betting market, popularising it, at least, with a hybrid formula and taking advantage of the regulatory situation. Undoubtedly, traditional casino games dominate and are still the preferred choice for the majority of consumers. They are also the main source of income for operators. We could then ask ourselves: why bother about hybrid gaming formats, which are usually rather niche and mere exploration products in which today’s target audiences are not interested?

Why so much interest in this subject?

The answer is clear to the Ampersand members: to ensure the relevance of the product in the future. Young generations of consumers grow up with video games and are used to gaming where they can enjoy and perfect their skills rather than leaving the outcome purely to chance. Introducing the elements that allow for various levels of skill in gambling is one of the main ways to experiment, to make it more attractive to new types of consumers, who may migrate to the gambling world in the future, but today spend their entertainment money elsewhere. But as soon as skill is brought into gaming, regulatory integrity will be questioned, especially if it is difficult to clearly establish the boundaries between skill and gambling. Ampersand members wondered whether perhaps a new definition of gambling is needed, to better help to distinguish from pure gaming. Exchange of money, level of skill or house advantage were mentioned as possible new indicators of what is gambling and what is gaming. These questions are asked because there is an experimentation that pushes the envelope to create something new and innovative. After all, it is about innovation: so, despite the ambiguities, we embrace it, if it means having progress and a long-term perspective, which I talk about so often in this page. As long as everything happens in accordance with the rules.
