Dear Neighbours, The one thing I’ll never get used to in producing Go Local is that I’m always a month ahead of most other people around here and that’s more obvious to me every September. Here I am on the 12th sitting in my shorts, tapping out this Welcome page the day before I go to print, while outside the sun is shining in anticipation of two or three days of fine, hot weather to come. Meanwhile, I’ve been putting Christmas adverts together! It’s a well-known fact that the early bird gets a good breakfast and all the inns and hotels around here know that they need to start now to get their Christmas party bookings in, so who am I to argue. At least I’m not the first. While shopping in Sainsbury’s last week I noticed they’d already started to introduce their Christmas offerings. In this month’s issue, with half a mind on Halloween to come, Nicholas Rhea introduces the subject of witch posts. Never heard of them? No, me neither, so increase your local knowledge by reading all about them on page 8. Also this month, a contribution from Rob Thompson of Hovingham regarding the Orkney Chapel, created by Italian POWs and the reason it’s included here is because there is going to be a talk about it at Hovingham Hall. Due to a last minute influx of ads I’ve had to drop Pippa Greenwood’s gardening article this month but there’s still a nice (vegetarian) recipe to be found, along with the usual cryptic crossword and sudoku. On the subject of the crossword, I have to own up that I inadvertently repeated the answers to the July crossword in last month’s issue. If you need to know the correct answers please email me - as quite a few people have already done! Best Wishes, Mick

A Local View! by Nicholas Rhea
O
ver recent years, many folklore writers, including me, have written about witch posts. It was believed they were made from rowan wood (timber from the mountain ash tree) and that they formed part of an inglenook hearth in what was known as a long house. Those particular long houses date from c.1630-40. Others appeared earlier. The function of that post was to support the bressumer, ie the large cross-beam above the hearth - but also to act as part of the heck partition in a short passage leading from the hearth into the threshold. The threshold, sometimes called the cross passage, spanned the width of the house behind the hearth and had a door at each end. Corn was threshed here with flails, the doors open to blow away the waste chaff. The posts (all made from oak, not mountain ash) have a large X-mark carved on the face near the top. Examples can be viewed in Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton-le-Hole near Kirkbymoorside, the Pannett Museum at Whitby and Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford. They also feature in several private houses around the North York Moors.
In addition, there is a small collection of identical posts at Rawtenstall in Lancashire but others were not thought to exist until I learned of A witch post at Ryedale Folk Museum fifty or so near Cornwall displays decorative the town of imitations but no genuine Enschede in Eastern Holland. posts; these are not I have no reports from other representative of real articles. parts of Britain or overseas. Brought up since childhood with these well-established ideas, my research into the life of the martyr, Father Nicholas Postgate, has revealed that the published material did not state the truth. Indeed, I had unwittingly repeated earlier errors! After long research, I believe the posts were NOT installed to ward off witches, most certainly they are NOT made of rowan wood and they do NOT exist solely within the North York Moors and Rawtenstall. In Holland, they are known as stiepeltekens and the link is their origin as symbols of the Catholic faith. Before I proceed, I should stress that The Museum of Witchcraft at Boscastle in
While attempting to unravel their true purpose in and around the North York Moors, I found in my own library a book called “Some Reminiscences and Folk Lore of Danby Parish and District” by Joseph Ford, published by Horne and Son, Whitby, in 1953. Joseph Ford was born in 1870 and died in 1944, aged 74. He spent a lifetime studying customs and beliefs of the North Yorkshire moorland people and upon his death ordered that his book be printed without changing a word. And so it was, but not until 1953 – I obtained my copy from my grandfather, Thomas Rhea, upon his death. continued on page 12

12 Ford wrote about customs and beliefs in his forefathers’ time. He does not provide a date for that time but does refer to witch-laying by the parish priest. He referred to a “mysterious ceremony” and wrote “After this mysterious ceremony was over and the power of the witch was supposed to have been rendered nil, it was the custom of the priest to cut the Roman figure X on the upright oak post which went up to the ceiling…” adding, “They came to be called witch posts.” As Ford was a devout Methodist, and in his forefather’s time Catholicism would be practiced in secret, the supposed “witch laying” may really have been a Catholic house blessing or
exorcism in Latin with holy water, candles, incense and so forth. All quite baffling to him! He does not clarify or name the mysterious ceremony, but his book provides valuable evidence that the X-marks on those oak posts beside the hearths were in fact the work of a Catholic priest. As most of the posts are within the North York Moors, it is highly likely that the priest was the Egton martyr, Father Nicholas Postgate. His moorland mission coincides with the dates of the long houses. In the North York Moors houses, the X-mark, known to Catholics as the symbol of the Five Wounds Of Christ, is at the entrance to the threshold. The Lancashire posts, in a
former strongly Catholic locality, emulate them and the Dutch X-marks are at the entrance to the threshold. In this instance, the threshold is approached from outside the farmhouse. Nonethless, its purpose was to identify a Catholic household. Backing onto the heck partition from beside the hearth there is usually a small seat which forms a cosy corner (a neuk). This was a considerable luxury when these fashionable hearths appeared around the mid-1600s. Examples remain in daily use both in private houses and some inns around the North York Moors . But are they a legacy of our local martyr?

History!
Orkney’s amazing Italian Chapel From the tragic and avoidable sinking of HMS Royal Oak . . . . . . to today’s icon of reconciliation, created by Italian POWs.
B
efore World War Two, the Royal Navy was certain that Scapa Flow, the historic northern base of the British Home Fleet, was impregnable. A junior officer’s detailed report proved otherwise but this was ignored by his superiors as fanciful and a brilliant U-Boat commander struck in an incredible feat of seamanship. The battleship HMS Royal Oak was sunk, with the loss of 833 lives, including over 100 boys. Coming within just weeks of the outbreak of war, this was a devastating early blow to the national morale.
A swift response was needed but the manpower to implement it was just not available, leaving the Royal Navy’s northern fleet without its strategically vital base from which to oppose Germany in the North Atlantic. Cunningly circumventing the Geneva Convention, Churchill organised a massive defence project, involving the drafting in of thousands of Italian POWs. From the hot Libyan desert in North Africa, they found themselves transferred to the cold of the
most bleak, storm-swept, and shelterless parts of the Orkney Islands. They lived in corrugated iron huts, freezing in winter, baking in summer and deafening in heavy rain. The Italians, largely reluctant combatants with families at home, felt their captivity very keenly - especially when they lost all contact with Italy after it capitulated and the vengeful Nazis imposed a savage rule of martial law in their country. They built up a strong relationship with local Orcadian families, who have a long tradition of Highland hospitality and who welcomed the prisoners into their homes after the capitulation. The encouragement of both a sympathetic new British camp commander and Balfour Beatty, an extremely enlightened civilian contractor, supported the POWs in their ingenious efforts to provide themselves with a focus for spiritual comfort at a time when their morale was at its lowest. An inspiration in both war and peace Their sufferings inspired one of the 20th century’s most beautiful and inspiring ad-hoc
pieces of church architecture. Working with just paint, plasterboard and scrap metal from rotting block ships, Italian craftsmen used their civilian skills to create a “micro-cathedral in a Nissen hut”. From the darkest days of the war and continuing into the 21st century, it is an active, ecumenical focus of peace, reconciliation and friendship. Today, as a class A listed building and a world tourist site, it attracts over 100,000 visitors to one the most remote corners of the United Kingdom. Just Google the words Italian Chapel and, while you might expect thousands of world-wide options to come up, it is the POWs’ creation in Orkney that heads the list. A reception & talk The moving story of this beautiful triumph of the human spirit in adversity is the subject of an illustrated talk at a reception, to be hosted by Sir William and Lady Worsley at Hovingham Hall at 6.30pm on Thursday October 13th. Proceeds for repairs to All Saints Church. Tickets are £12, including drinks reception with canapes. For tickets call: 01653 628 922

Recipe! A quick and easy vegetarian dish full of Indian flavour. If you don’t have all the spices just use 1-2 tbsp medium curry paste. Serve with boiled basmati rice or warmed naan breads, if liked.
Sweet Potato & Chick Pea Curry
Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes
Ingredients: • 1 - 2 tbsp vegetable oil • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 3cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and grated • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped • 1 aubergine, cubed • 2 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground turmeric • 2 tsp ground coriander • 1/2 tsp hot chilli powder • 3 medium-sized sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed • 500g carton passata (sieved tomatoes) • 400g can chick peas, drained and rinsed
Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the garlic, ginger and onion over a medium heat for about 5 minutes until light golden. Stir in the aubergine and fry for a further 2 minutes. Add all the spices to the pan and cook, stirring, for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the sweet potatoes, the passata and 150ml water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes or until the sweet potato is tender and the sauce has thickened. Stir in the chick peas and garam masala and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Simmer for a further few minutes. Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped coriander.
• 1 tsp garam masala
TIP
• Salt and freshly ground black pepper
For a chunkier sauce use a 400g can of chopped tomatoes and add 250ml water.
• Freshly chopped coriander, to garnish
