Dear Neighbours, June, and with it that perennial problem, what hints do I drop to my kids to make sure I get something I like on Father’s Day, which this year falls on June 19th. Am I too old to wear a Sex Pistols t-shirt? Am I too young for a kneeler to use in the garden? I think I’ll play it safe and go for alcohol of the Scottish variety and a couple of big bars of Cadbury’s Whole Nut! Also in June, on the 23rd to be exact, we get to vote in the EU Referendum. At the time of writing the Poll of Polls puts both sides on 50% so it looks like it’s going to go all the way to the wire. I’ve already made my mind up which way I will be voting but for those of you who still have to decide (and it’s by no means an easy choice) I’ve included an extra article this month, laying out some of the arguments, both for and against. Don’t forget to register if you haven’t already done so - and don’t forget to vote! It’s time for another Local View and in this month’s issue, Nicholas Rhea discusses bracken. It doesn’t sound exciting but it’s a big issue up on t’ moors, where it’s crowding out the heather and causing all sorts of health problems for sheep. Andy Baxter investigates what makes all those nocturnal noises that we hear at this time of the year. Did you know that when owls go “too-wit, too-woo” that’s a pair of them that you’re hearing? On the gardening page, Pippa Greenwood encourages us to get at the weeds and there’s also a great summery recipe to get your teeth into! Best Wishes Mick

A Local View! by Nicholas Rhea

M

y childhood playground around Glaisdale on the North York Moors was covered with bracken, a tall and resilient fern-like plant. With my pals, I would play hide-and-seek or hunt Robin Hood in tunnels through the dense plants. We would build shelters and fashion their walls and roofs from the foliage, weaving them into the standing stems. It was good fun but now I know that bracken can be dangerous to children, animals and other plants.

As children, we had no idea of the dangers and I don’t think I have suffered from those antics. When we cheerfully played among the bracken,

the only concern was that we might cut our hands if we slipped on the stems when we tried to uproot them. Bracken is a type of hardy fern that is sometimes used in domestic gardens as background on a rockery but it is very difficult to prevent it spreading into areas where it is unwanted. It is this ability to spread out of control coupled with a capacity to grow despite attempts to halt it, that has made it detested. As it spreads, it destroys all other vegetation. I have seen it described as Public Enemy No.1, a deadly weed and a poison fern. The dangers it presents are said to be numerous and because it spreads through the use of spores, there is a suggestion that prolonged exposure to bracken can lead to cancer in humans. Advice is widely presented to ramblers and hikers who are advised to keep well away from bracken particularly during the summer when the spores can be airborne. The snag is that many of our moorland paths are routed through, or very close to, areas of bracken. However, the good news is that it seems that short exposure does not present such a problem.

There is no doubt that the plant is also dangerous to sheep that live on the moors. If they eat it, it can be fatal, whilst if they survive, they might go blind. Up on the North York Moors and within the Yorkshire Dales there have been reports of sheep becoming blind during the summer whereas those on lower ground were not afflicted. A blind sheep will move with the flock but cannot travel alone, even when herded by a sheepdog. The eating of bracken also causes cancer to their jaws and may destroy the white cells in their blood. That ruins their immunity system so that they are susceptible to other diseases. In dense bracken, aggressive ticks may proliferate and these can affect humans, sheep and grouse, causing irritation at least and even death. For the grouse, bracken is doubly dangerous because it can destroy the heather upon which those birds depend. One moorland problem is that bracken can rapidly establish itself upon patches where the heather has been accidentally burned off, as when a moor fire starts. When controlled burning continued on page 12

12 occurs efforts are made to prevent the spread of bracken but the new fronds grow with surprising speed and energy by spreading underground. One report said that bracken was encroaching upon some 500 acres of moorland every year and if nothing is done to stop it, it will eradicate the heather. That will lead to the extinction of the grouse population. It will also kill any other plant that stands in its way. The problem is how to prevent the spread of this troublesome fern, considered to be one of the hardiest plants on earth. Burning is not the answer because the spores can survive in burnt areas to produce stems that

grow underground to provide an even thicker patch of bracken – indeed, burning makes it thrive. Pesticides and herbicides cannot be used because they damage other plants and thus destroy the habitat of wild life whilst attempts to physically clear the land is both expensive and time consuming. Despite efforts to eradicate it from the moors, the bracken continues to spread. In recent years, it was hoped that a South African caterpillar with a voracious appetite for bracken fronds might be the answer. Another technique is to use a heavy roller to crush the stems so

the plant cannot gain the necessary nourishment. But using such a device on the moors is far from easy due to the boulders that lie hidden deep in the bracken, and of course, there are the gradients. One theory is that it could be harvested – after all, bracken was formerly used as bedding for livestock and its ashes have been used to make glass, soap and bricks. It was also used to thatch barns and cottages but another theory raises the question of whether it could be collected and used as compost. So is an entirely new industry awaiting development?

The Wild Side of Life a sideways look at nature by Andy Baxter

W

hile we’ve all probably heard the nocturnal callings of female Tawny Owls saying “Twit” and male Tawny Owls saying “Whooo” by return during early spring nights, how many of us have heard other creatures calling in the night and pondered what on earth (or of this earth?) they could be. The callings of the Crepuscular Critters that abound in our area during late spring and early summer can easily give us an eerie sensation as day turns to night in the later hours. Of course the first of our eerie audibles has to be the enigmatic Barn Owls. These ‘White Ghosts’ literally seem to float over hedges and grassy fields whilst out hunting for small mice and voles. It’s when they call to each other in the twilight before night though, that you can believe how stories of ghosts perhaps originated. Add to that their propensity to use graveyards to hunt and rest and the shrieking ‘squeaking gate’ like noise they make is enough to make anyone slightly nervous think twice about what could be around.

Twilight is also a fantastic time to listen for two of our larger mammal species calling. Vixens bark out a sound for a mate which once heard and understood will never be forgotten, a screeching yelp that gets repeated endlessly and has the potential to keep you awake on a hot humid night when the full moon is shining.

unusual and incredibly hard to see. Nightjars are summer migrants to our area and, with a cryptic brown plumage, lie against the bark on a tree and are nigh on impossible to see. Listen however, and you will be rewarded with a sound of summer nights that bubbles on and changes direction as these medium sized birds offer their own call to breed.

Concerning yourself about the screeches of owls and foxes (not to mention the grunting heavy breathing of badgers), is nothing compared to being caught out by the guttural bark of a Roe Deer shouted from a woodland border or field hedgerow as it checks the area for danger. Not only is it loud, but when it comes at you from close range and includes the sound of footsteps…

The sound is aptly called churring, and after potentially being scared half to death by the calls of owls and large mammals that are around and about at dusk, the reward of a nightjar call really is something else.

However, once you’ve realised that the scariest creature in our woods is not likely to be a Gruffalo then now is most definitely the time to go after the ultimate crepuscular bird that comes our way and nests in our local woodlands (often within newly clear felled areas) and is both rare,

We shouldn’t need an excuse (other than it being mild and balmy for a change) to either head out into the countryside as the night draws in or, for that matter, to do the same at dawn and listen to the dawn chorus in full swing but if the opportunity arises, and a woodland clearfell is nearby, then perhaps a churring nightjar’s call will be just reward.

Staying In Or Leaving The EU What are the implications for your personal finances?

W

ith so much speculation about the economic implications of leaving the EU, you are probably wondering what the effect will be on your personal finances, whether we stay or go. The problem is there’s a lack of hard data or previous experience on which to model financial predictions for leaving the EU, so clear judgement is already hampered. David Cameron’s negotiations at the summit earlier this year mean that we retain the pound if we stay in Europe, and won’t be forced into adopting the euro at any future point. Many top business people and political figures are campaigning strongly to leave, and envision a more stable UK having regained our independence - negotiating trade deals on our own terms, and taking back the control we once had.

SO WHAT ISSUES SHOULD WE BE THINKING ABOUT? To provide a clearer picture of the issues involved when thinking about the pound in your pocket, we’ve covered a few of the areas that would experience the biggest impact should we exit, as well as providing some of the expert opinions aired in the media over the last few months on: • The value of the pound. • The state of the property market. • Fuel prices. • Flight and travel costs. • Data roaming charges.

A MAJORITY VOTE TO LEAVE THE EU The value of sterling At the start of 2016, sterling fell to its lowest level for 10 years against the dollar, largely due to the uncertainty surrounding our membership of the European Union. In general, a weaker sterling brings higher inflation and reduced purchasing power for consumers, but low value might only be an issue during the transition period rather than in the long-term.

Ratings agency, Moody’s, have also suggested the UK’s strong credit rating could be put at risk if we leave the EU, but as we mentioned earlier, opinions aren’t based on hard evidence as there’s no data on which to model an outcome. Others have suggested that being independent of Europe would allow us to forge our own way without impedment, taking more control over how sterling fares in the markets. In fact, former CBI leader, John Longworth, recently expressed his personal view that the UK’s future would be “brighter” if we left Europe. The property market Earlier this year, online estate agents eMoov surveyed 1,000

homeowners about the impact of an exit on property prices. 55% of people thought an exit would affect the price of their property with 34% of this number suggesting that it could increase the value of their home. eMoov say that, rather than an exit from Europe directly affecting the UK property market, the accompanying general economic uncertainty might dissuade would-be purchasers from making such a huge financial decision, which could then reduce overall demand. Fuel prices The Automobile Association claims that petrol prices would rise by nearly 19p per litre soon after an exit vote. Their calculation was based on a report by Goldman Sachs, which estimated a 20% fall in the value of the pound, and a tripling of oil prices.

If this sounds like a huge increase you might be right; however, the RAC suggests that even if sterling did fall in value, fuel prices would not be dramatically affected by the drop. Cost of travel Dame Carolyn McCall, CEO of easyJet, has warned that the cost of travel would rise steeply if we exit the EU, and it would mean the end of cheap flights. Others suggest a less severe impact for holidaymakers, saying that a fall in local prices within many countries would compensate for the drop in sterling value. Again, even if a drop in the value of the

27 pound does occur, there’s no reason to believe that it would be a long-term problem. Data roaming charges The cost of using mobile phones and other devices abroad could increase significantly if we leave the EU. This is because the arrangement to reduce extortionate data roaming fees once charged by UK providers may no longer be valid if we are not part of the European Union. It is thought unlikely that a similar agreement could be reached by an independent UK. VOTING TO STAY At the EU summit in February, David Cameron secured ‘special status’ for the UK in Europe. This includes exemption from the ‘ever closer union’ which would involve greater political integration of member states - one of the original intentions of the EU’s founders.

The Prime Minister also attained specific recognition that the euro was not the sole currency within the Union, protecting the existence of sterling now and in the future. Financial regulation by Europe is expected to continue, however, and this is one of the major issues for those wanting to exit. Author and property expert, Kate Faulkner, believes that growth of the property market would continue if we were to stay in Europe, but this would be at a reasonable level rather than a return of the unsustainable price rises that we’ve seen in the past. Recipe! This rich and creamy quiche can be served warm with new potatoes and coleslaw for a filling supper, but is just as tasty served cold as part of a picnic, packed lunch or summer buffet.

Cheese, Onion & Pepper Quiche

Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 mins

Ingredients:

1.

Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm fluted loose based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

2.

Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/ Gas 5.

3.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the chopped onion for 8-10 minutes until very soft. Drain on kitchen paper. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the crème fraiche and double cream. Add the nutmeg and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

4.

Spread the fried onions in the pastry case and scatter over the Cheddar cheese. Gently pour in the egg mixture and top with the pepper slices. Scatter over the Gruyere cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

• 250g shortcrust pastry • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and very finely chopped • 4 large eggs • 200ml crème fraiche • 150ml double cream • Large pinch of grated nutmeg • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 75g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • 25g Gruyere cheese, grated • 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced

TIP You can freeze this quiche for up to 2 months. Allow to cool completely then wrap either the whole quiche or individual slices in foil.

Gardening!

Tackling Troublesome Weeds by Pippa Greenwood

W

hy is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden?

It’s certainly the case in my garden! In no time at all they come into growth, produce sizeable leaves and stems and quite often seem to be flowering and then seeding in only a few weeks. Top of my weed hate list is that tiny and innocuous looking one called hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). It produces a rather attractive little rosette of leaves which in no time at all is topped with a short spike with tiny and indeed pretty white flowers. So why do I despise it? It is simply that it spreads by pinging out its seeds within such a short space of time that if you don’t pull them up very promptly you soon have what amounts to a forest of these plants all over your garden. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ and this could mean your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or even your lawn. So what is it that makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities in order to grow in the way they do, and sometimes compete actively with

the nearby garden plants that you are so carefully nurturing. • Some of them grow so rapidly that they can create shade and so stunt the growth of smaller plants nearby. • Those which have an almost ground-cover like effect can soon swamp garden plants and cause their growth to be distorted or held back. • Occasionally weeds may also harbour pests or diseases which can then move on to your garden plants. Everyone has some weeds in their garden, but what can you do to minimise the problems they cause, yet avoid spending hours on end with a hoe in your hand or a sprayer at your fingertips? • Always try and get on top of weeds early in the year removing as many as you can before your garden plants start to grow strongly will make weeding easier and also cut down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. My favourite is UK designed with a heartshaped head and a blade on all edges, meaning that you are hoeing every time you pull or push the hoe – it also has a relatively small head, making it easier to hoe in confined spaces,

between plants and in gaps in between rows without risk of damage to your plants. It is a hoe we fight over at home; find out more on my website. • Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed, as this often causes more weed seeds to germinate, and even if these have been lying dormant in the soil for some while, as soon as the soil is disturbed they come to life - so if you are not careful you may make the problem worse. • Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring many more seeds to the surface and encourages weed seed germination; hence it is best to put up with a few weeds during the growing season. • Whatever you do, it is essential to remove your weeds before they set seed – that old saying of ‘one year’s seeds is seven years’ weeds’ really is true in many cases. • Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). • When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock

For quality advertising in a quality magazine call 01439 788008

43 and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots in one go is my little red-handled weeder – small but built out of stern stuff and by tucking the hook-like head beneath the rosette of leaves and close to the centre of the plant, I find it easy to pull out the root in its entirety almost every time. See www.pippagreenwood.com/ products/good-growing for more information.

• Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants!

• If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. All this means is that you get the area in which you intend to sow prepared well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date. This allows dormant weed seeds to germinate so you can then carefully remove the weed seedlings, and then sow or plant up as you wish. Because you have already removed one major flush of weeds, you tend to have fewer problems later. • Don’t forget the importance of a good deep mulch; many weeds can be kept at bay or the seeds prevented from germinating successfully if you cover the soil surface with a mulch which is a minimum of

two or preferably three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) deep. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.
