Dear Neighbours, By the time you read this the Rio Olympics will have finished but as I have to prepare the magazine for print in August it’s still going on. And on...and on. I can’t wait for the BBC to get back to normal so instead of complaining about there being nothing to watch except sport I can complain about there being nothing to watch in general. I thought the idea of more TV channels meant more choice but as most channels just repeat the same old stuff day in, day out the outlook for us couch potatoes is very gloomy! In this month’s issue I decided to write an article about my recent experiences with new technology. What seems so simple to anyone under the age of 18 is like a whole new language to most of us older folk, but I like a challenge now and again. You can read about how I got on if you turn to page 8. Time for another nature article and this month Andy Baxter writes about big fish. I sort of knew there were some whales about, a few colonies of seals and the odd dolphin but tuna? Very big in Scarborough, apparently, in the 1930s. I’m sure that must have piqued your curiosity! Pippa Greenwood’s gardening article is all about being adventurous with bulbs. No, not light bulbs, the kind you plant! I like a good fish pie and there’s a mouth-watering recipe for one this month. Add a crossword and sudoku to the mix and you’ve never had it so good! Remember, if you use the advertisers in Go Local please let them know where you found them. Best Wishes, Mick

Techno Fear! - or, how did I get left behind?

F

irst of all I need to make it clear that when it comes to technology I am by no means a beginner. My first foray into the world of computing began in 1988, when I applied for a government-sponsored course in computing, or to paraphrase the ads at the time on the buses and tubes, “Make a fortune by becoming a computer whizz-kid!”. Of course, it didn’t quite happen like that, but it was exciting in its way and by the time I left London in 2005 to move to sunny Gilling I was working with some fairly cutting-edge technology. What a difference a decade makes! I’d managed to keep up with the new releases of Windows to some extent, at least enough to know I didn’t want to run my business on the newer versions but just enough to be able to fix my son’s laptop when it got invaded by trojans and malware. If you don’t know what they are count yourself blissfully happy and carry on reading, as they won’t be mentioned again!

What changed my hitherto benign outlook on Northern life was a trip my wife, Grace, took on the train home from London after visiting our daughter in her new flat, about 6 months ago. As I picked her up at York station she said, “Everyone in my carriage was either reading from a tablet or doing something on their phones. I was the only one who was reading a book - I felt so old!” So I decided it was time to rejoin the technological revolution and that’s where I found out how far I’d been left behind. I already knew we didn’t need a fancy phone as there’s no signal in our village and I’m of the persuasion that a phone is primarily for making calls on, so it had to be a tablet. But which one? There are hundreds of different makes and types, with a variety of operating systems from Google, Microsoft and Apple, ranging in price from around £25 for a no-name basic to a staggering £900 plus for an Apple i-Pad. After a week or so of trawling through reviews of this, that and the other I finally settled on a Google Nexus 7. Not so small that our

ageing eyes couldn’t see it but not so big that it couldn’t fit unobtrusively in Grace’s handbag. Of course, you’ve heard of the generation gap? That’s where a younger member of the family, in this case my son, falls about laughing when his elders don’t have a clue what they’re doing, in our case trying to get the damn thing to work. Unlike most devices that you buy, such as a dishwasher or a power drill that come with an instruction book in seventeen languages including Klingon, the Nexus came with no information whatsoever. I managed to get the thing turned on but we were then faced with just a black screen with the date on it and some tiny symbols at the bottom, one of which was a padlock. Now I’m not completely dumb, having watched my daughter swipe her phone to get access so I tried the same thing. Nothing happened. After a fair number of swipes later, left to right and right to left, my son, who was almost in tears by this time, showed us that we should be swiping from the bottom up. Finally, the promised land! All those dinky little apps waiting continued page 12

12 to be explored. I managed to get access to the internet and download a few things I thought we’d need and get rid of a huge raft of others that would never get used. I set up Mail and Facebook and a little app to make shopping lists and we were ready to go. Except we weren’t. I don’t know if you know much about software and operating systems in particular. One thing they’re very fond of doing is updating to the latest version and Android, the operating system on the Nexus was no exception. We had to go through a series of updates, the final one of which put itself into a loop, which no amount of restarting would shift. So there we were, day

one with a brand new device and it was already unusable. They don’t mention that in the advertising! I won’t go into the trials and tribulations of fixing the problem except to say it took me over a day of trawling the internet before I came up with a workable solution, with my old software training coming to the rescue after a break of over ten years. I hate to think what someone without my background would have done. There are horror stories galore on the internet of people coming up against the same problem. Perhaps we were just unlucky and most of you reading this who already own tablets have

nothing but good words to say about them. If you’re thinking about getting one, don’t let this put you off because they do have their advantages but I’d make sure you have someone you can ask if things go a bit haywire! For us, in the end, our little Nexus 7 has been worth the aggravation. Grace has Mail, Facebook and Instagram easily accessible and used it to take lots of photos on holiday, I got the Kindle app so I could take a bundle of books away with me, and with a wonderful little app called MAPS.ME we managed to navigate around Italy with ease, using the tablet’s GPS. Technology, look out, I’m catching you back up!

The Wild Side of Life a sideways look at nature by Andy Baxter

Tuna fishing in Scarborough in the 1930s

I

’m proud to say we have one of the most spectacularly diverse coastlines in the world sitting right on our doorstep. Everything from the Jurassic cliff-bound rocky foreshores to the north of Whitby through to the sweeping sandy beaches, major headlands and shifting muddy waters of the Humber estuary. While the natural character of the landscape is little changed over the centuries, it seems hard to comprehend these days that whales, dolphin, porpoise and other unusual fish have been present just off our shoreline during most of that time. Perhaps even more unlikely is that many of them are back in our waters again and can be seen along our shorelines this autumn. First of all, a fishy tale of bygone eras. Anyone visiting Scarborough harbour may have noticed a giant metal sculpture of a tuna on the town’s east pier. Odd, perhaps, to associate such a species with Scarborough. Who would have thought that within the last 80 years there was a thriving tuna fishery in the town? Prime Ministers, military

leaders and members of the aristocracy all descended on Scarborough during the 1930s for what turned out to be a short-lived bonanza of big game fishing in Yorkshire. A fishy tale perhaps? Well, the biggest tuna to be caught weighed 831lb and was landed by Lord Rothschild! Step forward to recent times and while the tuna fishery has long been depleted, the mackerel and herring shoals are back in the North Sea in abundance. The notable followers of these fish, however, enable us to harp back to much earlier times when Whitby in particular was famous for its whaling industry. With such large shoals of fish returning close inshore, it is almost inevitable that whales have returned to our waters. The worldwide hobby of whale watching, usually undertaken from distant coastlines in California, the Maldives or New Zealand, for example, is now available and successfully sighting whales out of Whitby. First mention goes to the return of our smallest whale,

the minke. Even these ‘small whales’ can reach 10m in length and are currently being sighted on an almost daily basis through late summer in recent years. One of the fastest (and much larger) whales also being frequently seen now is the fin whale. These individuals can be seen during the same period, also hunting the shoals of herring and mackerel. Their size though is phenomenal. Considered to be the second largest whale on the planet, fin whales can reach nearly 30m in length and are so streamlined they can reach speeds of up to 25mph. Add to this the possibilities of seeing humpback, killer and sei whales along with a variety of species of dolphins, seals and porpoise and our good fortune at being close to an amazing coastline becomes clear. Perhaps in a few years, the abundance of fish shoals might just lead to the return of the tuna fishery. The first ones in many years have been caught off the coast of Ireland recently so perhaps their move back into the North Sea isn’t that far away after all.

Ingredients: • 1.6kg floury potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks

Meanwhile, place the cod in a large frying pan and pour over the milk. Add the bay leaf and peppercorns and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes then remove from the heat. Using a slotted spoon, remove the cod from the pan and set aside. Strain the milk into a large heatproof jug.

• 750g cod fillet • 1L milk • 1 bay leaf • Few black peppercorns • 75g butter • 50g plain flour

Melt 50g of the butter in a medium saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in 850ml of the milk. Bring to the boil, stirring all the time, then simmer for 3-4 minutes until you have a smooth, thick sauce.

• 3 tbsp freshly chopped parsley • 175g frozen peas, thawed • 225g large peeled prawns, thawed if frozen • 15ml olive oil

Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6. Flake the fish, discarding any skin and bones, and stir into the sauce with the parsley, peas and prawns. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Transfer the mixture to a deep ovenproof dish.

• Sprig of fresh parsley, to garnish

TIP You can use any white fish fillet for this pie - haddock or coley will work just as well. Alternatively, replace half the cod with salmon fillet or smoked haddock.

5

Mash the potatoes with the rest of the butter and milk and season to taste. Spoon the mash over the fish mixture to cover. Drizzle over the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve garnished with a sprig of parsley.

Gardening!

Brilliant Bulbs by Pippa Greenwood

I

t’s spring bulb time in all the garden centres now. Every one up and down the country should be crammed full of bulbs, many at an incredibly reasonable price, and all of which promise to provide glorious masses of colour, sometimes with scent, for many years to come. By all means plant bulbs in beds and borders, but make this the year that you are a touch more adventurous and, if you don’t have any open ground in your garden and do your gardening purely on a terrace, patio or in a back yard, then don’t forget that there are still plenty of bulb planting opportunities to be had! Bulbs have the potential to make any garden look gorgeous but you can use them to add an element of fun as well as glamour, colour and perfume. Bulbs look fantastic if allowed to naturalise beneath trees, but if you’ve no space for trees then

miniature bulb varieties look equally good beneath shrubs. Simply choose a suitable selection such as miniature daffodils or crocuses and plant them in a random or scattered effect beneath the shrub, taking care to minimise damage to the shrub’s roots. Keep them well watered in spring and you should have a fantastic display. On special occasions you may have been sent some flowers and these are often delivered in ornamental plastic-lined woven baskets, which are also available inexpensively from local markets or on the internet. These make perfect planting containers provided they are at least 3” (8 cm) deep. Shallower baskets can be used for smaller bulbs such as crocuses - simply fill them with bulb fibre and then plant up in the same way as you would a bowl of bulbs for an indoor display. To ensure that drainage is

definitely not a problem, puncture some holes in the plastic liner and then use any normal multi-purpose or loam based compost mixture. Baskets like this look particularly decorative in the spring, and if you add a couple of ferns or ivies to larger baskets they will look even better. Make use of an outdoor table which is normally left out throughout the year. In spring it is unlikely that you are going to use it for outdoor entertaining, so simply cover it to prevent the surface being spoiled and arrange a selection of pots full of spring bulbs on it – the effect can be really splendid and will make eating out of doors even more fun and stylish. An old bucket particularly an enamelled or galvanized one makes a fabulous planter, but remember to drill some holes in the base, or if this isn’t possible, ensure that you place a

31

layer of pebbles or grit at least 2” (5cm) deep in the bottom, so that excess water accumulates below the level of the roots and the bulbs do not rot off. If your garden or back yard is a good size, then make sure that you use some large containers as these look particularly handsome if you can afford the space. Packed full of a single variety of one of the daffodils or tulips or any other spring bulbs, they will look absolutely gorgeous and make a very striking and bold display. Plant the container up in two layers, so that one lot of bulbs is planted a couple of inches

deeper than the other, and you will find that the display is prolonged slightly as the deeper ones will flower somewhat later than those planted closer to the surface If you want something really wacky, why not consider using an old bathroom suite or parts of it to make some very unusual planters? A bath may need a lot of compost to fill it – and don’t forget that good drainage will be necessary - but it can act like a full-sized flowerbed. Even a hand basin, lavatory or perhaps just the cistern can be planted up to great effect.

For a truly ornamental look, put an old watering can or wheelbarrow to good use by turning it into a planter; it’s the sort of thing you pay a fortune for in a garden centre! And then, guess how to make a decrepit pair of wellies or the pair of boots with a hole in them look fun: yes, these too make wonderful bulb containers! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.
