Dear Neighbours, I don’t know where you are with your gardens so far this year, but I can tell you that chez Scott we’re not getting very far at all due to the amount of wet weather we’ve had recently. According to Monty Don we should all have got our spuds in by mid-April but at the time of writing this I know that If I dug a trench now it would just fill up with water, hardly the best start to give them! I was looking at a website that reckoned things should be planted according to the phases of the moon but the question is, how does the moon know how much rain we’ve had? At this rate the spuds will be ready just in time for Christmas! May is certainly going to come in with a bang this year as we’ve got the Tour De Yorkshire passing right through this neck of the woods on its way to a seaside finish in Scarborough. Yorkshire folk seem to have taken cycling to their hearts somewhat, judging by the crowds attracted over the last few years, so I thought it would be an idea to cobble together an article about it then you’ll know where to see it on the day. Not to be outdone, Kirkbymoorside is holding its 10k race and fun runs on the same day so there’s something about that, too. Also in this month’s magazine and on a more sombre note, there’s an article about refurbishing the war memorial in Hovingham and plans to honour one of the soldiers whose name was inadvertently left off it. The recipe this month is a cracker - Thai Beef Salad. Just the job for one of those balmy May days, should we ever get one. To round things off, Pippa Greenwood advises on how to get your grass up to scratch. Enjoy! Best Wishes Mick

Tour de Yorkshire - just passing through!

M

ay Day this year is looking exceedingly busy in these parts, with not only the Kirkbymoorside Fun Run and 10K Race but also the madlynamed Tour De Yorkshire shooting through, proving that anything the French can do, we can do better! I’ve been an aficionado of the Tour De France for quite a few years now. There’s nothing I like better than to spend July afternoons with my feet up, watching the race from the comfort of my armchair, marvelling at the speed and endurance of the riders. I didn’t go to the Tour de France when it ran from Yorkshire, preferring to see the whole thing on TV. It was a long way to go to see the racers whizz by in just a few seconds and as I said, I like my comfort! However, when the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire took place last year I thought I should make the effort, so last year we stood at the top of a hill above Rosedale watching the peloton make short work of the

incline. They whizzed past us in seconds and I was lucky to get as many photos as I did in such a short time but at least from our vantage point we could see them coming from a good way off. Take my tip, get yourself somewhere where the riders have to slow down because it’ll be over before you know it. If you fancy standing on the corner at the top of Sutton Bank you should get a good view. In front of the Crown in Helmsley suggests itself as one good point as the riders will have to slow down for the sharp right-hander. The roundabout in Kirkbymoorside should also be a good spot as it’s quite small and will be tricky for the riders to navigate. Anywhere on the climb up to Blakey Ridge would also be good. If you’re fit enough you could try running alongside some of the riders! At the bottom of the page you can see exactly where the race passes through this area with the approximate times they’ll arrive. Most of that section of the race takes place on the

A170 through Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside, before turning off to Hutton-le-Hole and the long climb up to Blakey Ridge. The Tour itself kicks off on 29th April with a 185km run from Beverley to Settle, with just one King of the Mountains challenge at Greenhow Hill, near Pateley Bridge. On 30th April, Stage 2 runs for 136km from Otley to Doncaster, this time with three King of the Mountain challenges. These first two races are bound to appeal more to the sprinters and should offer fairly fast times. If Stages One and Two are for the sprinters, Stage Three will certainly appeal to the climbers. With an elevation of 2,593 metres and six King of the Mountain classifications, the route begins in Middlesbrough, birth place of Captain James Cook, and takes the riders on a challenging and technical route through much of the stunning North York Moors National Park. From the start line at Middlesbrough’s MIMA Gallery, continued on page 12

The Timings column shows expected arrivals if travelling at 41km/h, 39km/h or 37km/h

12 they travel south over the Official Start on the outskirts of Nunthorpe on the A172, through Great Ayton, home of the Captain Cook School Room, and on to Stokesley, Hutton Rudby, Winton and down to Northallerton, the county town of North Yorkshire. From there, the riders head to Thirsk’s market square where there will be a sprint point, before the infamous Sutton Bank and a King of the Mountain. Onwards to Helmsley, winner of Britain’s Best Market Town, then to Kirkbymoorside and heading north to Hutton-le-Hole and a King of the Mountain at Blakey Ridge. The peloton will recognise Castleton and many of the villages towards Whitby as the route is similar to that for the 2015 race. There will be a King

of the Mountain at Grosmont, where in 2015 riders were welcomed by a steam salute by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, and riders will pass through Sleights and Ruswarp before dipping down to Whitby. There is a sprint point at Whitby Abbey, before the race makes a visit to Hawsker. Next up is a battle over a King of the Mountain at Robin Hood’s Bay, before another King of the Mountain at Harwood Dale. From there it’s full speed to East Ayton and Irton, before a final King of the Mountain at Oliver’s Mount and a sprint finish in Scarborough’s North Bay. Altogether, 144 riders are expected to start the race, comprising eighteen teams of eight riders each. Some famous teams from the cycling world are taking part, including Team

Last year’s race in Rosedale

Sky, Katusha, Orica GreenEDGE, Dimension Data (Mark Cavendish’s team) and Team Wiggins. At the time of going to press it’s not known exactly who will be racing but I’m sure there’ll be some big names out there. See you there!

History! Hovingham WW1 hero, missing from war memorial, to be remembered

A

Hovingham man who joined up twice in WW1 is to be commemorated in the refurbishment of the village’s war memorial. Cyril Judson, a young groom from Brookside, Hovingham, volunteered into the Royal Artillery at the outbreak of war but was invalided out just weeks later, without seeing active service. Still determined to do his bit, he then re-enlisted, finishing his war In Mesopotamia in 1919 in the elite Machine Gun Corps. Again discharged on ill-health, he died at home in January 1920. Although officially recognised with a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone in Hovingham graveyard, he was not listed on the village’s war memorial. This is thought to be an administrative error, made in the short weeks between his death and March 1920 - the official cut-off date, after which those who died of wounds did not appear on Britain’s memorials.

Seventy nine Hovingham men went off to WW1; 16 never came back and many were never the same again. Some families lost all of their soldier menfolk - two families lost three each. One family sent off six who all returned - but with such losses among their neighbours their stress and worry must have been unimaginable. The current lettering on Hovingham’s War Memorial is almost completely eroded and gives just a name and initial. A new stone is to be laid on a gravel bed in front of the memorial, sponsored by the Hovingham Branch of the Royal British Legion. It will summarise more information, including full names, regiment, place and date of death and age. These will be carved into a flat stone which will be placed onto the gravel apron in front of the memorial. In addition a revised book, written by the Ryedale Family History Group, will be available in the church. This will give much more detail on both those who fell and those who returned in both World Wars and will cover their families, occupations, addresses and war service.

The families who lost sons are: Bowes, Coultas, Dawson, Dunning, Galtry, Hickes, Hutchinson, Judson, Pemberton, Ward, Watt, Wray, & Goodwill. Families of those who served include Bean, Bilton, Blackwell, Brayshaw, Brown, Carass, Coatesworth, Craike, Foster, Gibbins, Harrison, Harwood, Heath, Hodgson, Hoggard, Holdsworth, Hopkins, Hopwood, Hornsey, Johnson, Land, Magson, Moore, Oldfield, Phillips, Plowman, Potter, Pryor, Robson, Sawyer, Skelton, Skilbeck, Stainsby, Wilkinson, Worsley and Wright. More information at Hovingham Market The RBL Branch plan to add Cyril Judson’s name to the memorial and are appealing to members of the Judson family - and relatives of other local families who served in both World Wars - to share their information at a special stand at Hovingham Market on Saturday May 7th from 09:30 to 12:30. Alternatively, please contact RBL Branch Secretary Rob Thompson on 01653 628 640 or ardnamurchan75@ btinternet.com.

Admission to both gardens which includes the plant fair is £3.50, children free. No dogs in either garden please. More information on www.flowerpowerfairs.co.uk or ring me on 07730 859441. If you’re looking for something specific you can always give me a call and I’ll ask the nurseries to bring the plants with them.

Open 11am - 4pm.

Heath Quartet

York Double Concert Wednesday 25th May at 7pm. The Ryedale Festival introduces its 2016 season to York audiences with a Double Concert – two short programmes are performed twice; the audiences changing places either side of the interval. In the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall the Heath Quartet play Tchaikovsky’s noble and lyrical First String Quartet – its slow movement based on a Ukrainian folksong that famously moved Leo Tolstoy to tears. The Merchant Taylors’ Hall (this year celebrating its 600th anniversary) is the setting for an irresistible recital by one of the country’s leading musicians, Catrin Finch, known as ‘The Queen of Harps’. Recipe! This colourful and fragrant main-meal i l salad is great for easy entertaining. Choose thick pieces of steak and take care not to overcook them or they will become tough and chewy.

Thai Beef Salad

Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes, plus marina ng me

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • •

2 x 175g sirloin steaks 1 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp light soy sauce 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 tsp dried chilli flakes 6 spring onions, trimmed and thinly sliced 8 radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced 100g fresh bean sprouts 1/4 cucumber, thinly sliced 4 firm plum tomatoes, quartered 200g mixed salad leaves

FOR THE DRESSING • • • • •

juice of 2 limes 2 tbsp Thai fish sauce 2 tsp brown sugar 1 tbsp fresh chopped coriander 1 tsp finely chopped lemon grass

Place the steak in a shallow dish. Mix together the lime juice, soy sauce, garlic and chilli flakes. Season with freshly ground black pepper and cover and leave to marinate for 1 hour. Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle until very hot. Add the steak and cook for 4-6 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan, cover with foil and leave to rest for 15 minutes. Toss together the spring onions, radishes, bean sprouts, cucumber, tomatoes and salad leaves. Mix together all the dressing ingredients, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Slice the warm steak thinly across the grain. Toss gently into the salad with the dressing. Pile into a large shallow serving dish and serve immediately, or leave to cool and serve chilled.

TIP Lemon grass stalks are sold in small packs

by the fresh herbs in the supermarket. You only need a small amount to give an extra zesty fragrance to the dressing but the stalks will keep for 1-2 weeks in the fridge. Try adding chopped to curries, fruit salads or infuse in hot water for a refreshing alternative to tea.

May 1st

Kirkbymoorside is going to be very busy on May 1st! As well as the Kirkbymoorside 10k race at 3pm there are many other events on the same day and something for all of the family. Children’s Dash @ 12:55pm 400 metres from the town centre up and back down the High Street. Parents welcome to run too but may be overtaken by speedy children! Hares lead the way. A great event for years 2 and under. This will be most children’s first race and hopefully very enjoyable. Medal to all finishers. 4K Teen’s Race @ 1pm Approx 4 km. From centre of town, up Swineherd Lane, across to Low Park Farm, down the private track and back into town via Castlegate. Hilly circuit but downhill finish! Medals to all finishers & individual trophies to winning boy & girl in Year Groups 7, 8-9 and 10-11. 4K Adults Fun Run @ 1pm The same start time and route as the Teenager’s 4K Race starting and finishing in Kirkbymoorside Town Centre. This is not a measured race distance. All finishers receive a medal. Children’s 1 Mile @ 1:05pm Suitable for children in primary school years 3 – 6 inclusive. 1 mile race, mostly on road, small section through Manor Vale. Fully marshaled & traffic controlled, partial road closure on the High Street. Hares will lead the way. Trophies awarded to first girl and boy in every year group. Medal to all finishers. Travel Advice Due to the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race taking place on the same day and coming past Kirkbymoorside you may experience some travel disruption. There will be a rolling road closed along the A170 from Thirsk and past Kirkbymoorside but it is anticipated that the cycle race will have passed by about 2:30pm . But, please take time to plan your route and time carefully so as not to miss out because of traffic.

For more information, including online registration for the races, please visit http://www.kirkbymoorside10k.co.uk/

Gardening!

The Grass Can C Be Greener by Pippa Greenwood

I

t’s the time of year when things are starting to look lush and green, and beds and borders are beginning to come into their own. But does your lawn spoil it all by looking like a rather moth-eaten patchwork quilt? Or maybe you don’t have a lawn but think it would be great to possess one of those beautiful green surfaces in the centre of your garden? Whether you have decided your old lawn is well past its best or you want to create one from scratch, it is the perfect time to get started, and turf should still be available from specialist suppliers or garden centres. PREPARING THE SITE If you want a new lawn, it is essential to get the site properly prepared. It takes time and effort, but every moment you spend is well worthwhile. Start by removing all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass or lawn, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. If the area is really weed infested or covered with old lawn, most people opt to kill this off with a weedkiller based on glyphosate. Then, once all the plant matter has died off,

you can strip it away or dig it in. On sandy soils, incorporate some organic matter to improve moisture retention, while on very heavy soils it is often worth digging in grit and organic matter to improve drainage. Next, firm the whole area by treading it over evenly - walking over the site with fairly flat-soled boots is all you need to do. Once done, rake thoroughly with a garden rake and remove any stones or other debris which comes to the surface. Gently tread down the area again if raking makes it uneven. BUYING TURF Always choose a reputable supplier and make sure that the turf you buy is suitable for the use you have in mind – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher than others, while some contain a seed mixture especially put together to make it suitable for use in shade. Others produce a ‘bowling green’ effect, which may look superb but will take an awful lot more maintenance and be a good deal less hardwearing. Spending that little bit extra

usually pays - cheaper turf often contains weeds and sometimes pests or diseases, or simply does not contain a good grass mixture in the first place. Always buy the turf or arrange to have it delivered just when you need it, as storage never does it any good. If you do need to store it however, you can usually do this for a couple of days. The turves can remain rolled up for up to 24 hours, but for any longer than this unroll as soon as they are delivered and lay them out flat, grass side upwards, preferably on paving or plastic sheeting. Make sure that you keep them regularly watered and lay them as soon as possible. LAYING THE TURF It is essential that you lay your turves closely together and do not allow the edges to overlap. Make sure that the joins on each row are staggered (like bricks in a wall), as this will give an even finish. Starting at one side, lay the first row of turf using the adjacent path or lawn edging to form a straight line which you can work to. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge of one abuts onto its neighbour.

For quality advertising in a quality magazine call 01439 788008

41 Lay the next row of turves, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the previous row. To avoid damaging the first row lay a plank over it which you can kneel on to lay the second row. Continue like this over the whole area until your new lawn is in position. Of course no lawn is ever exactly the right size to fit the turf length, so if you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather than at the end, as this will make it less likely to be dislodged or to dry out. If you want a curved edge to your lawn, lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and then cut them to shape using a half moon edger or a sharp border spade.

When finished, gently tamp the area over using the back of a rake and if any turves sink in then carefully lift them and place some extra soil underneath until they are level. Finally, brush in a mixture of horticultural sand and finely sieved soil over the surface, taking care to ensure that any tiny gaps between the turves are filled in. CARE AND MAINTENANCE As soon as the turf is in position, gently water it using a sprinkler, ensuring that this first watering allows the water to penetrate right down to the root level.

of months whilst the roots are getting established. In the meantime try to avoid walking on it too much and in no time at all you will have a gorgeous lawn to be proud of. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - fantastic UK grown vegetable plants of your choice plus weekly advice and tips emails from Pippa, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

If it doesn’t rain frequently then you will need to water your lawn on a regular basis, particularly for the first couple

Bradley, in Kirkdale Minster on Saturday, 7th May immediately after the Annual General Meeting of the Friends of St. Gregory’s Minster.

This meeting begins at 2.30 p.m. and usually last about 20 – 30 minutes. All are welcome at both the meeting and the lecture, for which there is no charge. Prof. Bradley will talk about the history of St. Gregory’s Minster after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, when it passed from Newburgh Priory into lay hands, eventually to Oxford University. The University remains a patron of the church and archives have yielded fascinating documents. A ‘must’ for all interested in local history.
