FLORIDA PORTABLE SERVICES AND NEWSOME WELL & SEPTIC

North Florida

Florida Portable Services and Newsome Well & Septic, serving the North Central Florida market, are two thriving businesses owned by Kyle Myers of Alachua, Florida. The dual companies function separately, though both are headquartered in the same office in Alachua.

Myers, along with members of his teams from both organizations, got together for an interview with us to share information about the sister companies with ALW

readers. Here, Kyle and his team tell the story of these topquality operations:

GROWING UP IN THE FAMILY BUSINESS

Kyle started by sharing his personal story of growing up within the water well and septic service industry. My parents owned and operated a thriving well and septic company in Gainesville. As far back as I can remember, my older brother and I would frequent the shop and job

sites. I started going to work with my dad when I was old enough to ride in a truck with him. During my high school summers, my brother and I would run the well service truck working on residential well calls. After high school, I obtained a CDL, started operating septic trucks, and worked my way up to managing operations.

After my mother passed away, my father decided to retire and enjoy life, so he sold the business to his brother.

I appreciated my family's business, but I had dreams and goals that were not the same as what they wanted. So, I left to do things differently, providing services and opportunities with a more modern approach.

THE START OF SOMETHING BIG IN GAINSVILLE

In 2008, at age 23, I left the family business and started my own company. We founded Newsome Well & Septic, primarily drilling wells, pumping septic tanks, and doing

drainfield installation. When most of my buddies were in school or partying, I was busting my tail to build what I hoped one day would be an empire. Unbeknownst to me, I started my business during a recession, but I was thankful that I didn’t really know what that word meant, so it didn’t slow me down!

I knew about having a work ethic and a “not to fail” attitude, but I didn’t know a lot about running my own business. I did, however, possess the essential characteristics needed to be a successful business owner. The keys to running a business are to have a passion and a reason, and surrounding yourself with the right people. My passion was the industry and customers, and my reason was the haters who said, “You can't do it.” Together, those gave me the determination, motivation, and grit to succeed.

I learned over the years that you can’t do it all yourself. As I said, you’ve got to hire and surround yourself with good people. The majority of our staff, starting out, were friends and family. My wife would send out invoices and write reports at night, and an old

roommate became our Operations Manager.

On a rainy Friday night in March 2022, I got a call from a buddy in need. He was looking for someone to pump and move rain water at the Gainesville Raceway. They were rained out and couldn’t get cars on the track. They hired us to come and do vacuum removal of the water. We took six pump trucks and removed over 150,000 gallons of water in one day.

They liked our quick response and knowledge of how to handle the situation, so they asked if we would also be willing to provide them with portable restrooms for their races. We had no porta pots at the time and they had 300 porta pots that needed ongoing service. So, my wife Brittany, and I bought 400 portables and launched Florida Portable Services.

RAPID GROWTH OF KYLE MYERS’ GAINESVILLE ENTERPRISE

Florida Portable Services has grown by about 300 portable units per year for the past 3 years. We’re now at about 1,000 rental units and 8 trucks for servicing portables. In 2024, after being asked several times if we had dumpsters, we started to add dumpster rentals and haul-offs to our services.

At Florida Portable Services, we have 5 drivers, 3 office

staff, and an operations manager. For Newsome Septic, we have around 9 employees – 2 on the well services side and 7 on the septic side. In total, we have about 25 fleet vehicles. Plus, we have excavators, skid steers, and other equipment needed to perform quality work for our customers.

Our service area spans from Orlando to the Georgia state line, to Live Oak, to St. Augustine. Between

the two companies, we provide a one-stop shop for water wells, septic systems, portable restroom rentals, dumpsters, and related services. The restroom trailers provide climate control and other comforts. We offer portable handwashing stations to help ensure sanitation, dumpsters for site cleanup, waste tanks for emergency sites, porta potties with crane lifts for high rise construction, and light towers for worker safety at night. We provide trailers for agricultural sites and solar fields, and restroom trailers, including AC trailers, for events and many other uses, to supply critical hygiene resources for all circumstances and needs. We have a wide range of equipment to meet diverse emergency needs. This includes more than 50 handwashing stations, 12 or more hand sanitizing stations, 15 2-unit

trailers with a sink, a 4-stall, and a 2-stall AC luxury units. The transition to running two businesses has worked well. For service calls, we’re probably seeing about 500 customers per month between both businesses. The septic division runs new service or repair(s), along with pumpouts everyday. The portable and dumpster rentals have more than tripled in 3 years, and we project the same rate of annual growth over the next few years.

EQUIPMENT IN DUAL OPERATIONS

We chose the Armal equipment for several reasons. One was about brand recognition. Branding is important to me. As we started out, we wanted to distance ourselves from the competition. We wanted a unique color scheme that fit our business brand and stood out, not only from the competition but also on the job site. The Armal staff

were accommodating to make that happen. Armal also provides a good quality porta pot product along with great customer service. Anytime we’ve needed them, they’ve always been there, reachable even on nights and weekends. From our inception, all of our portable toilets have been purchased from Armal. From our porta pots to our trucks, they are all coordinated to match our brand and vision.

FLORIDA PORTABLE SERVICES AND NEWSOME WELL & SEPTIC

Our employees are very skilled. They all know how to deliver excellent services for any situation a customer may have. We are professionals who are familiar with our local region and know its particular challenges and requirements. We provide a full range of site facilities

Kyle Myers’ team leadership methods in the dual operations. We asked about managing what might present unwieldy daily team coordination problems across the two businesses. Jontelle explained, “We mostly use a group chat app to provide everyone with easy access to an open team platform.”

Kyle continued, Our team attends trade shows, the WWETT show, and other learning events. We’re a member of FOWA (Florida Onsite Wastewater Association), and we utilize the learning opportunities they offer. The biggest thing I’ve learned about leadership is that you’ve got to have a team with everyone on the same page to make it work. We always talk, every day, and we pull together to create solutions when something comes up. We’re a close knit group.

The portables business is really fast paced. The hardest part is finding quality drivers. The jobs working out in the field are harder to fill with talented, long-term employees. We offer a great benefits package and a family-like environment. We have monthly breakfasts and celebrate birthdays. We offer insurance that pays 75%, paid vacations, retirement plans, and we give people a happy environment to work in.

When asked about adding to the team, Jontelle added, “We just had a meeting on that today. We do working interviews. We understand that this is definitely not an industry for everybody. We have job applicants come in, and we pay them for the interview. We work them the full day.

We ask them to be here at 8:00 am and experience it live, to make sure they’re into it. They do a ride-along. They can’t be afraid of a shovel. They can’t be afraid of the heat. They can’t be afraid of poop. Spending a day doing the job is very effective for finding people who are a good fit for these companies.”

ADVICE FOR NEWCOMERS TO THE INDUSTRY FROM KYLE MYERS, GAINESVILLE, FL

Do what you say you will. Show up, and do the job right. Also, you’ve got to answer your phone — and be ready to go all the time. For the future, have an open mind.

On Myers' Dual Operations in North Central Florida

There is a sense of powerful energy, laser focus, and indomitable momentum conveyed by the Myers team. The earlier-mentioned passion, motivation, determination, and grit of the business owner are ingrained in the internal culture. The fierce commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, common among the best in the industry, was also strongly recognizable in this dynamic team. It certainly seems reasonable to expect this group of very dedicated professionals, under the direction of the remarkably driven Kyle Myers, to meet or exceed his growth goals for Florida Portable Services and Newsome Well & Septic. We look forward to continuing to follow the progress of this exciting pair of companies through the coming years.

TURN UP THE HEAT NEXT WINTER WITH BETTER BIOGAS PRODUCTION!

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), farms, and food processing facilities have the incredible opportunity of transforming waste materials into heat and energy through onsite biogas production. Many already take advantage of anaerobic digestion to convert manure, wastewater, and plant-based waste into methane used to heat and power their own facilities. Yet this local form of renewable energy comes with inherent efficiency challenges—challenges that can be effectively addressed through bioaugmentation and biostimulation. Bionetix® International encourages biogas facilities to explore those options now so they can be ready for maximum heating efficiency when winter prompts them to turn up the thermostat.

COMMON BIOGAS EFFICIENCY CHALLENGES

An anaerobic digester that produces 60% methane, 40% carbon dioxide, and less than 1% H2S and

other impurities is doing extremely well. However, when hydrolysis or other stages of the methanation process go wrong, the rate of methane production can drop, while the rate of H2S or other unwelcome byproducts can increase. Readily available plantbased feedstocks present a special challenge because they create compounds that inhibit the growth of

key microorganisms involved in anaerobic digestion, reducing the amount of biogas produced and in turn affecting the amount of energy or heat that is available to the plant.

ENHANCE PERFORMANCE WITH MICROBES AND NUTRIENTS

Sometimes all that biogas generators need to fix these problems is to call in microbial and nutritional reinforcements. Bio-augmentation is the addition of beneficial microbes, and biostimulation is the addition of select nutrients that promote healthy microbial activity. One anaerobic digestion supplement that fulfills both purposes is BCP12™. BCP12™ contains select microorganisms and nutrients that promote healthy hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and acetogenesis to

boost conversion of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into methane formers. Moreover, BCP12™ appears to work well even in the presence of inhibitors that are common in lignocellulosic biomass,* making it an excellent addition to anaerobic digesters at facilities that process waste from food, crops, or pulp and paper. BCP12™ showed promising benefits when applied during a trial at a wastewater facility that used excess methane to fuel the boilers that heated their own buildings and digestion process. The facility noticed an increase in biogas production that could significantly offset their need for natural gas at a fraction of the normal cost, so it was recommended that BCP12™ be added daily to the digester during the heating season.

Another great addition to anaerobic digesters is BIOGAS BOOSTER 3™, a special blend of three micronutrients specially chosen to stimulate microbial activity. These micronutrients are stable and bioavailable, ensuring easy microbial uptake. Laboratory testing conducted by York University, Ontario, in 2020 showed an increase in biogas production in just one week when BIOGAS BOOSTER 3™ was used.* An increase like this in the field would mean that facilities could get more thermal energy and electricity, thereby increasing the energy recovery from digested substrates.

TURN UP THE HEAT NEXT WINTER

If your facility needs to discard large amounts of wastewater, manure, or food scraps, don’t miss your opportunity to convert waste into valuable biogas and help cut your facility heating and energy bill next winter. Then, go one step farther to optimize efficiency with bioaugmentation and biostimulation so you don’t have to feel guilty next time you turn up the thermostat! Need additional help? Contact Bionetix® International for further assistance maximizing your biogas efficiency.

TIPS FOR LOCATING UNDERGROUND UTILITIES BEFORE EXCAVATION WORK

Municipal infrastructure managers and maintenance crew chiefs face growing challenges when it comes to safely performing excavation, digging or maintenance work. With an ever-expanding web of underground utilities, including water, sewer, drainage, fiber, electrical and gas lines, the risk of damaging critical infrastructure has never been higher. Even a minor misstep can result in service outages,

costly repairs and serious safety hazards for workers and the surrounding community.

One of the core challenges is the unpredictable nature of underground infrastructure. Utilities laid decades ago may not appear on modern maps, and even recent installations may not be accurately recorded. Relying solely on utility records often leads to confusion due to incomplete or outdated

One of the core challenges is the unpredictable nature of underground infrastructure. Utilities laid decades ago may not appear on modern maps, and even recent installations may not be accurately recorded.

information. Compounding the issue, inaccurate line markings can mislead crews, especially in high-density utility corridors or areas with tough, compacted soils.

TO COUNTER THE DIFFICULTIES, HERE ARE A FEW IMPORTANT TIPS FOR LOCATING UTILITIES SAFELY AND EFFICIENTLY:

1. Use a layered approach. Initial steps include consulting 811 utility locator services and reviewing

GIS records where available. However, even these important steps should be considered starting points. For example, it’s not unusual for utility location markers to be off by several feet, meaning that proceeding blindly to dig based on a surface flag may result in either missing the utility line completely, or damaging it or others in the vicinity. Also, depth of utilities can vary greatly depending on local codes, past projects,

or even erosion—so never assume a uniform depth across a site.

2. Consider hydro excavation. This non-destructive process uses pressurized water and a vacuum system to break up and remove soil with precision. It allows crews to expose underground lines without mechanical digging, significantly lowering the risk of striking vulnerable assets like fiber-optic cables, gas mains and water pipes. Hydro excavation is particularly valuable in areas with dense or rocky soils, where traditional tools may struggle or pose higher risk.

3. Employ test holing. To achieve the most precise utility information, crews may perform test holing to expose the horizontal and vertical location of utilities.

Test holing, also known as potholing, involves carefully exposing utilities by digging small exploratory holes, often using hydro excavation to confirm exact depth and position. This process is essential for validating locator data and should be performed before major excavation begins. In terms of equipment, TRUVAC offers a selection of hydro excavation products to meet Subsurface Utility Engineering’s (SUE) highest standards for safe excavation.

4. Remember basic best practices. Beyond technology, caution and crew training remain essential. Regularly updated protocols and checklists, jobsite walk-throughs and proper use of personal protective equipment are all vital to ensuring worker safety and utility protection. Additionally, coordinating with utility companies and conducting onsite utility test holing before full-scale excavation can identify hidden lines and confirm line depth and location.

Hydro excavation equipment manufacturers may also offer their customers resources like TRUVAC’s Ask the Expert feature to support safe and efficient use of their equipment for locating and working around underground utilities.

By combining careful planning, modern tools like hydro excavation and a safety-first mindset, municipalities can avoid costly accidents and keep infrastructure maintenance projects on schedule and within budget. INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY IN SEWER MAINTENANCE: Tools, Techniques and Teamwork

In the world of municipal sewer maintenance, the demands are constant, and the resources are often stretched thin. From aging infrastructure to growing populations, departments across the country are challenged to do more with less. But with the right mix of planning, equipment and strategy, it's possible to

increase productivity without compromising safety or service quality.

The Vactor team works closely with sewer departments of all sizes, and one thing is clear: productivity gains often come from small, measured improvements rather than sweeping changes. Here

One of the core challenges is the unpredictable nature of underground infrastructure. Utilities laid decades ago may not appear on modern maps, and even recent installations may not be accurately recorded.

are a few practical ways departments and crews can boost efficiency in day-to-day sewer maintenance operations.

START WITH SMARTER SCHEDULING

Optimize routes and prioritize maintenance tasks based on system condition and historical data

to save significant time. Many departments are now using GIS-based asset management software to identify trouble spots before they escalate. Proactive scheduling also reduces emergency calls and overtime, making every hour count.

EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY FOR HUMAN EFFICIENCY

Use the latest innovations in sewer cleaning and maintenance equipment to simplify and speed up operations. Advancements like IntuiTouch® controls and Park-N-Clean™ setup for sewer jetter vehicles reduce set up time, increase efficiency and reduce operator stress, all leading to greater productivity every time a truck leaves the homebase.

4 Preloading trucks with parts, tools and safety gear for the day’s assignments

4 Keeping digital or printed job checklists in every vehicle

4 Using mobile tablets or radios for instant communication with supervisors or dispatchers Even small-time savings — like avoiding trips back to the facility — can add up to significant efficiency gains.

EMPHASIZE PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

Waiting for backups to occur means working in emergency mode, which is inherently inefficient. Instead, head off problems early by regular line flushing and visual inspections. Preventative maintenance also extends the life of both infrastructure and equipment, which pays off long-term.

EDUCATE THE PUBLIC

It seems obvious but is sometimes overlooked: Get some help from the homes and businesses that contribute to sewer maintenance issues. Connect with them by email and social media with reminders about proper disposal of oils and personal hygiene products, as well as property waste like leaves and tree debris.

TRAIN AND CROSS-TRAIN YOUR CREW

Skilled operators are faster, safer and more adaptable. Invest in training not only to improve individual performance but also to allow crew members to fill in on different roles when needed. A well-rounded team can handle unexpected challenges without delays or rescheduling.

TRACK PERFORMANCE METRICS

It’s hard to improve what isn’t measured. Track simple KPIs like linear feet cleaned per day, number of stoppages cleared or time per job site to help supervisors identify areas for improvement. Many departments now analyze this data monthly to adjust routes, staffing or equipment allocation. Ultimately, increasing productivity in sewer maintenance is about balancing people, process and tools. With tighter budgets and rising expectations, the most successful departments are those that make small, continuous improvements to stay ahead of the curve.

By equipping crews with the right technology and fostering a culture of efficiency, municipalities can meet today’s demands while preparing for tomorrow’s challenges.

The Evolving Septic Services Industry 2025

ONGOING CHANGES IN TECHNOLOGY, REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS, AND CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS IN SEPTIC SERVICES ARE RESHAPING THE INDUSTRY. LONG-TIME SERVICE PROVIDERS ARE ENTERING A NEW AND EXCITING PERIOD OF ADAPTATION, AND NEWCOMERS TO THE FIELD MAY BE SURPRISED AT THE LEVEL OF SOPHISTICATION OF TODAY’S REVOLUTIONARY EQUIPMENT, PROCESSES, AND MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY.

In 2025, the nationwide septic services market is thriving, and it’s advancing into a new age of hightech, cleaner pumping processes, zero-waste hauling, and en route, onsite bidding, billing, service tracking, payroll processing, safety monitoring, and analytical data gathering. Here are the drivers of the current septic services industry evolution:

Strong Industry Growth

The US septic systems cleaning and maintenance services industry is projected to grow to about

$7 billion this year (2025). Commensurately, the septic tank market is expected to grow to nearly $1.4 billion over the next 7 years. That’s a CAGR of about 3.5% annually from the value of just over $1 billion last year (2024). This strong growth in septic systems equipment and services is due to the continuously rising number of both residential and commercial construction projects in locations where waste management calls for septic systems solutions.

New Paradigm in Tank Pumping

Coming online now is a revolutionary septic tank pumping process that features onsite filtration of the wastewater and returning the finely filtered water back into the tank, eliminating the need for hauling and dumping vast tons of sewage water daily throughout the country. This new technology can be expected

ultimately to replace the old costly and cumbersome process of hauling tanks across distances, which is already boosting the purchase and implementation of the new filtration technology here in the US.

Pollution Control Advancements

New electrical systems and hydraulic technologies for septic service trucks are improving operator efficiency, helping minimize adverse environmental effects. These upgrades result in reduced fuel emissions and noise pollution. Various solar-powered processes are additionally aiding in reducing the carbon footprint of property owners with septic systems.

Service Tracking and Management Tech Advancements

GPS tracking systems and route management technology have significantly improved the efficiency of septic service operations over the past five years. Increasingly advanced versions of the software platforms are further helping reduce fuel waste and increase scheduling efficiency. These improvements are improving customer satisfaction and raising the number of service calls technicians can complete daily.

Leaps in Digital Technology

The shift toward complete integration of network technologies that facilitate “the Internet of Things” (IoT) has reached the industry with innovations in smart septic systems. These modern equipment designs feature smart sensors and remote systems monitoring key functions. The spectacular advancements empower homeowners and septic service operators to perform real-time assessments of septic system behaviors. This provides critical information needed for accurate predictive

maintenance, and it cuts the risk of equipment breakdowns or wider system failures.

Advanced Treatment Units

Installation of ATUs is increasing because of their growing track record of more efficient wastewater treatment. The ATU improves on the standard process by infusing oxygen into the process, thereby promoting aerobic bacterial digestion for cleaner outflow and minimizing environmental impact. These alternatives are especially useful when environmental regulations or site conditions do not permit conventional septic solutions.

Increased Sustainability Requirements

Industry advancements like bio-filters to treat wastewater, and even constructed wetlands to more advantageously disperse it, are making drain fields more sustainable. These measures are reducing the adverse impacts of septic systems on the surrounding environments.

Tougher Regulatory Requirements

Increasingly strict laws governing the treatment of wastewater have led to more sustainable processes and improved technologies enabling them.

BUSINESS CORNER

More advanced septic systems and tank service technologies, more extensive technician training, and more eco-conscious operating policies and practices are all contributing to industry-wide improvement in meeting needs for environmental protection.

THE NEXT STAGE OF SEPTIC SERVICE INDUSTRY EVOLUTION

The septic service field, in 2025, is one of sweeping adaptation to changing customer expectations, social demands, government intervention, and new technologies and processes. Long-time operators may perceive that all these changes are happening at once and all the challenges and solutions are utterly unfamiliar. Such is the way of great transformation, and that’s the level of industry evolution we’re approaching.

Current providers are in a more and more competitive market with tougher and tougher environmental regulations. However, they are equipped with powerful new technologies to accommodate all that is necessary to succeed in this changing business subsector. The most advanced modern solutions are available to today’s septic services operators for providing people with quality waste treatment and for growing a great service business.
