Do you work for a company that you love? It makes a big difference when you do. Great companies are committed to the health and safety of their workers and empower them to make good decisions and bring their ideas forward. A great workplace has a positive work culture, supportive leadership, work-life balance and opportunities for professional development. We asked people to share why their employer is a great place to work and we received an overwhelming response. A call for nominations for our annual 50 Best Places to Work contest resulted in more than 1,700 responses for 86 companies in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. The companies include small businesses, medium-sized companies and large corporations.
In this month’s edition, we feature the winners of that contest. Employees wrote about appreciating the flexibility of schedules, team-building activities and social events that bring everyone together, to competitive benefit packages and health and wellness programs. Over and over, the community involvement of a business was listed as important to people.
Here are a few excerpts from the nominations:
A nomination for Arvig in Perham, Minnesota, states, “I have worked for several companies over my career and I can honestly say that Arvig is like no other. They truly go to all extents to make working for them a great and rewarding experience. This leads to happy employees which translates to amazing teamwork and customer service. This is the first company I have worked for that I can say truly cares about its employees!”
An employee at KLJ Engineering LLC in Bismarck, writes, “KLJ pushes diversity initiatives, employee health and wellness programs, small perks such as fruit brought to the office twice weekly, and allowing employees the opportunity to work from home. The company makes it easy for me to have a work/life balance.”
And a nomination for Continental/WCCO in Wahpeton, North Dakota, states, “The healthcare premiums are some of the best I have ever seen. I have not seen a bill yet from the clinic, as coverage of healthcare is amazing.”
When an employee loves their job, they tell their friends. They’ll go the extra mile for an employer that is fair and inclusive. The result is a more effective company with a strong and healthy workforce.
That’s not the only thing you’ll find inside this month’s edition. It’s also our 25th year of publication, beginning this month. You may have noticed an updated logo on the cover, highlighting our silver anniversary. We’ll include a special feature for the next 12 months that looks back to topics and stories covered in Prairie Business over a quarter century.
The crucial role foundations play in higher education is the other main feature this month. We spoke with several foundation directors to find out how building strong relationships with alumni, community partners and businesses is benefitting colleges and universities.
Please join us in celebrating this year’s top companies. It’s an honor to recognize them in Prairie Business. Thank you to all the employees who took the time to send in your thoughtful nominations and congratulations to this year’s 50 Best Places to Work!
I look forward to hearing from you at cmcdermott@prairiebusinessmagazine.com or 701-780-1276.

Prairie Business was first published in September 2000, which means we’ve just completed our 24th year and are beginning our 25th. A lot has changed in that time and some things haven’t.
As I dug through our Prairie Business archives, I took note of the regional business topics of the day. The internet was still fairly new and several stories in the magazine focused on the importance of getting a URL for a business. Although its official birthday was Jan. 1, 1983, the internet’s origins date back to the 1960s with government researchers creating ways to share information. By 2000, more than four in five households with a computer had at least one person using the internet, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The first edition of Prairie Business features an article titled, ‘The good, the bad and the ugly. com.’ Written partly tongue-in-cheek, it advises business owners to come up with a clever URL for their company – perhaps a tagline or slogan, if the company name is too cumbersome. It also recommends having a reputable professional design your website, rather than leaving it to your 12-year-old. It sounds funny now, but back then, it was uncharted territory.
Rick Killion was the first Prairie Business editor and Lin Smithwock was a sales manager and writer. There were also guest columnists who were experts in their field – something we still depend on today. The cover of the first edition features Barry Batcheller, who was then the president of Phoenix International Corp., Fargo, as part of the article on how higher education was forging new ties with business. That company was founded in 1987 and first manufactured electronics for the agricultural industry. It then expanded its customer base to include heavy construction, irri-
gation, small engine, hydraulic pumps and valves, and the dairy industry. Phoenix International was eventually acquired by John Deere.
In the first edition, there were also articles on business management, business profiles and community profiles. It was a good way to learn about businesses in the region and hopefully, still is.
“We don’t really do much with community profiles anymore. Maybe we should every now and then. But it’s interesting that over the course of a quarter-century, we’re still outlining business management ideas and profiling businesses within our footprint,” said Korrie Wenzel, publisher of Prairie Business since 2014. “And realizing that it’s already been 25 years really is a bit stunning, to be honest. A quarter century actually is quite a long time in the regional magazine business.”
One feature article was a deep dive on Marvin Windows and Doors, now called Marvin, and the
establishment of the town of Warroad, Minnesota. Another article was about the creation of North Dakota’s first feature-length film, “Wooly Boys,” (2001) starring Peter Fonda, Kris Kristofferson and Joseph Mazzello.
“The film is described as a contemporary family film about an earthy sheepherder (Fonda), who helps his citified grandson regain a childhood submerged in an over-programmed metropolitan lifestyle,” the article said. Kristofferson played Fonda’s partner in the storyline. The film showcased the beauty of North Dakota and filming of the outdoor sequences was shot near Medora. Extras were hired from the state and other footage was shot in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.
Another article, a profile on the city of Williston, shares research about its founding and expansion into the energy sector. The inaugural IT Open event was also held in Willison and covered by Prairie Business in the first edition.
During this 25th year, we’ll look back through our old editions and share some news from the past and try to provide updates on some of the companies and people mentioned in those early articles. If there’s a company or a topic you remember reading about in Prairie Business and are curious about now, reach out. We love a good treasure hunt. And if you have updated information on a company profiled years ago, please share it with us. We want to include those updates as part of our celebration over the next 12 months.
We’ll celebrate our silver anniversary all year and highlight it this month in person at our annual awards event in Fargo. Thank you to all the contributors and advertising partners who have made Prairie Business a success over the past quarter-century. We couldn’t do it without you!

Like many major employers, today’s modern offices were largely designed pre-pandemic with a focus on large conference rooms and individual assigned desk spaces. While this design provides both function and utility, it can also stymie collaboration and the building of cross-functional relationships, as well as limit space for focused, quiet work.
At Bobcat Company, we have embraced a culture of open seating or “hot-desking” for many years at our North American facilities, giving our team members the opportunity to choose their workstation each day based on their needs. Our office spaces are also designed with small meeting rooms called enclaves that are suited for individual or small group connections, as well as larger meeting spaces to accommodate a variety of meeting needs.
As our team in West Fargo continues to grow, our facilities group saw an opportunity to evolve our workplace with even more choice and flexibility.
We recently added several new individual “pod spaces” across our West Fargo office, sourced from Framery Acoustics. These ultra-modern, soundproof and windowed rooms are sized perfectly for an individual looking to minimize distractions, take a quick call or create a space for private, virtual meetings. Now, team members can use a pod for focused work time, vocal privacy or simply as a space to recharge. This also frees up larger conference rooms for group meetings.
The pods come equipped with optimized ventilation and lighting, as well as multi-functional seating and desktop configurations perfect for sitting or standing. Our team members have shared that they appreciate the alternative working environment that the pods provide.
From a broader employee culture and strategy perspective, we understand and embrace the need for increased autonomy within the office for how, and where, our employees do their best work. Other Bobcat locations have incorporated similar setups with great success and positive feedback.
While these pods are recent additions to our West Fargo office, we are looking forward to more of our team members taking advantage of them and sharing their thoughts with us. Our company approaches workplace development and office ergonomics from a continuous learning perspective, adjusting and enhancing amenities as beneficial to our employees.

Who knew that taking a call on your honeymoon could lead to a life-changing vocation?
Nicole Kivisto, president and CEO for MDU Resources (MDUR), noted that was the direction her job took – being married to a company as long as she has been married to her husband. The interview she took on her honeymoon started her 29-year career with Montana-Dakota Utilities into her current role with Montana-Dakota Resources.
Kivisto started in a corporate accounting role and worked in various positions before making a big shift to an operation position at the utility. That led to a leadership role within the utility company until her most recent promotion. Along the way, Kivisto talked about the role mentorship has played in her ascension.
“I have a more collaborative leadership style,” Kivisto said. “I have been surrounded by great people who make me and our company better. I know I do nothing alone. I have also been naturally curious and love to learn and
believe very strongly in the value of mentors – both in a formal and informal way in my career. For me, I found more value in the mentors who have pushed me beyond my comfort zone and those who are willing to tell me the truth, even when it hurts. I have had a number of mentors in my life, both within work and outside work. Those are the friends who help you keep the work-life balance. Constructive feedback on your blind spots is important. Having multiple people in that role who are open and transparent is essential. MDUR has had a mentoring program for many years and I have been fortunate to be a part of it from both a mentor and mentee side.”
Kivisto was in a different position when MDUR looked to position itself in a different direction – spinning off Knife River Corporation in 2023. Kivisto talked about getting back to the company’s roots with these changes.
“It is an exciting and transformative time for MDUR,” Kivisto said. “We celebrated our 100th year as a company recently and we have seen many changes over the years. It was just the right time, based on outstanding financial performance and macroeconomic tailwinds, that allowed us to review all subsidiaries. It is an exciting future as a pure-play regulated business, which is where we got our start 100 years ago. I do my best to not only focus on the here and now, but believe my job is to look beyond the current year to the next five years or even the next decade.”
Kivisto elaborated on the ability to navigate in a heavily regulated industry operating in many different states to ensure the success of the company after all these years.
CONTINUED ON PAGE 22
“The key to our success has been our ability to adapt and change over time,” Kivisto said. “For example, we took our coal mining expertise and entered the aggregate mining business. We built the company through a series of 84 acquisitions and organic growth, from our utility roots to building on a utility service business that is now Everus. Our employees and leaders are ultimately responsible for the success of the company, and I am humbled to work with such a great group of people.”
Everus is the new branding for MDU’s Construction Services. The concept is that while MDUR is focusing on its core, subsidiaries will need to come up with new strategies that better align with market needs. Everus is building on the strategy that works for the company, its employees and the United States. That spinoff allows Everus to be a publicly traded company, designed for the next generation of needs in construction services.
It is also with humility that Kivisto is able to talk about the challenges ahead for the company.
“We will continue to focus on the balance between safe, reliable and cost-effective service while working with the regulatory environments at both the federal and state level,” she said. “We need to be cautious on the pace of energy transition and de-carbonization. We need to evolve to meet all changing needs. Technology needs to advance; infrastructure needs to catch up and reliability needs to be front and center.”
Just like every other business, Kivisto noted where the company is headed in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Kivisto said that some pros and cons come with such technology and discussed what her role as president and CEO means for that adaption.
My favorite part has always been the people that I get to work alongside. It has been pretty fun representing this group of employees as we share our story with investors on the transformational changes we have been talking about here. We will look to answer the question, ‘Who are we going forward?’ We will continue to redefine ourselves and we will always keep ourselves essential. Seeing our communities grow and thrive, as our company has grown over the last 100 years, helps us to realize what we do in the region really makes a difference.
Nicole Kivisto
“We continue to explore applications,” Kivisto said. “As with most things, we will need to continue to be thoughtful to deploy where it makes sense and with security and reliability as top of mind. Certainly one of the benefits we see is our ability to serve new customers. An example is Applied Digital, a unique approach with location which brought benefits to our company and all our customers. Like other companies in the utility space, we are finding great opportunities to apply AI tools, but it is important to have the right policies, protocols and governance in place for using it. We are looking to educate our employees on using AI in the proper way.”
Since the pandemic, Kivisto said the company has opted to allow hybrid and work-from-home options where it makes sense and has found areas where the real benefits can be found for both the employees and the customers. She noted that the company continues to monitor the culture side of the issue and they will continue
to refine and focus on culture no matter where the environment takes them in the future. Kivisto said the company will continue to pursue all aspects for employees that are in the best interests of all those involved.
She shared some of her favorite parts of the new position to which she is looking forward.
“My favorite part has always been the people that I get to work alongside,” Kivisto said. “It has been pretty fun representing this group of employees as we share our story with investors on the transformational changes we have been talking about here. We will look to answer the question, ‘Who are we going forward?’ We will continue to redefine ourselves and we will always keep ourselves essential. Seeing our communities grow and thrive, as our company has grown over the last 100 years, helps us to realize what we do in the region really makes a difference. We are built to have a national presence and we look to stand the test of time for the next 100 years .”

During the nine years Kim Nelson has been CEO of the North Dakota State College of Science Alumni Foundation, the nonprofit has nearly tripled its scholarship awards – from $450,000 in 2015 to nearly $1.5 million this school year. It’s impressive for the small twoyear state college in Wahpeton, North Dakota.
“The impact has been us going out and raising dollars with our donors, alumni, and friends of the college. Part of that is investing wisely. On top of that, North Dakota has the ND Challenge Grantwhich is a one-to-two match. For every dollar we raise, they’ll give us half. That’s been a wonderful tool, also,” she said.
Giving to U.S. higher education institutions was at $58 billion in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023, accord-
ing to survey results from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Even though it shows a 2.5% drop from the record high reported in 2022, it demonstrates continued significant philanthropic support to the important higher education sector. Last year, 757 institutions took part in the Voluntary Support of Education survey and reported that gifts from organizations rose, as giving from individuals declined.
Anne E. Kaplan, senior director of the CASE Voluntary Support of Education survey, noted that over a five-year period, the level of support is high despite a decline in contributions.

“The stock market was weak in December 2022, and many donors time their charitable gifts to coincide with stock market growth periods,” she said in a release. “Some organizational donors base gift and grant levels on the previous year’s economy, making commitments a year or more in advance. This partly explains why the level of support from organizations rose when personal giving declined.”
At NDSCS, Nelson said the foundation’s job is to play matchmaker – determine the greatest need of the college and match that need with donors. For example, a donor has a strong interest in the performing arts and an endowment is established to pay for new technology and stage dressings for the department.
“Our job is to find those donors and help them learn to leave a legacy,” she said. “You build relationships and trust with people over time. If they can trust that what you’re doing in the foundation and what the college is doing is good, then they’re more willing to give.”
The oldest generations are giving the most, creating legacies with endowments that will last for generations. The NDSCS agriculture department is being remodeled and expanding, thanks to grand gestures from individuals and families. A $1 million transformative contribution by the Yaggie family in December 2023 enabled major enhancements to the ag center, now known as the Yaggie Family Agriculture Center. Thanks to a significant contri-
bution of $500,000 from Linda Kosel Patterson, NDSCS now has the Kosel Family Agriculture Land Lab used by all of the college’s agriculture programs. It’s been pivotal in doubling the ag program’s student enrollment and has enabled the introduction of new associate degrees in precision agronomy and precision agriculture technology.
NDSCS has about 60,000 alumni spread out across the country, but the majority – 76% – live in North Dakota, Nelson said.
“We have a huge following. It doesn’t matter where I go, if I’m wearing anything with NDSCS on it, I find somebody that went to college here and I think that’s neat. That’s what the alumni foundation is about – that recognition –and we bring that back to help the college,” she said. “If you are an NDSCS alum, be proud of that and tell people that you are. There’s a student out there, someone sitting next to you, that might want to come here.”

complex and a fine arts addition,” said Zach Flakus, president and CEO of NSU Foundation.
The October 2023 closure of the private Roman Catholic Presentation College, which had an on-site nursing program in the community, became an opportunity for NSU.
“We’re adding a new nursing program at Northern. It’s supply and demand because there’s a 100% need, a shortage, not just in South Dakota but all over,” he said. “Donors came to us and said if we add a nursing program, they’d support it. It’s going to be privately funded for up to five years with requests to the state legislature (for future funding), to show we’ve established this because we know there’s a need.”

North Dakota State University has close to 100,000 living alumni and about two-thirds of those live in North Dakota and Minnesota. NDSU Foundation President and CEO John Glover has a staff of 60 and about a third of those are development directors who work one-on-one with
benefactors to help support the areas most important to them.
“We like to say this work is a contact sport – we need to get out and build long-term relationships with those who want to make gifts. We work in a donor-centric way,” Glover said.
A groundbreaking will take place this fall for a new engineering facility at NDSU, a project billed as a public-private partnership. The state legislature committed to providing $59 million if the foundation secured a minimum of $25 million. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 26
“In less than 10 months, we raised more than $40 million, which is more than a $100 million investment to support the College of Engineering,” he said.
Glover said the foundation is increasingly relying on the support of donors who want to make bigger impacts with larger gifts, but the number of donors is declining. He said 10-20 years ago, alumni were used to getting a phone call from their alma mater to consider making an annual gift. Today, the advances in telemarketing technology and increased competition from other nonprofits has created a challenging business environment for the phone-call request to be successful.
“In our world at NDSU, we shut down the telemarketing program nine years ago and now our focus is on the one-on-one relationships,” he said, allowing for significant additional gifts to the foundation. “We align our staff to where we have the affinity and capacity to make a difference.”
Although tracking alumni participation in fundraising campaigns is not a data point the foundation tracks, he believes nearly half of

“At the start of the campaign, there were commitments in place for 13 endowed positions and we ended the campaign with 58. That was a direct response to the university saying this is a real priority for us, to attract talent and keep talent,” Erpenbach said.
The four areas the foundation marketed to are people, places, traditions and innovations. The “margin of excellence” is what donors provide in terms of scholarships and programs that would be otherwise underfunded, he said.
In the single largest gift in university history, the Brookings-based First Bank & Trust committed $20 million to support the renovation of SDSU’s Frost Arena, which is home to the Jackrabbit basketball, wrestling and volleyball teams. Renamed the First Bank & Trust Arena, it will reopen this fall.
Erpenbach said about half of the dollars raised from the Bold and Blue campaign will go towards endowments.
“It’s important for long-term stability that takes a bit of pressure off the annual fundraising. Scholarships we have to raise money for every year versus an endowment, which provides that money each year,” he said. “What we have seen is a growth of people who see the impact of private giving and donors who may have been giving nice amounts in the past, who are now considering six- and seven-figure gifts because they see the trajectory of the university and the difference that’s happening because of the philanthropy,” he said.
In Grand Forks, one of the goals at the University of North Dakota Alumni Association and Foundation is to give students the best experience possible to ensure every student who wants the opportunity for a degree in higher education can have that degree, said CEO DeAnna Carlson Zink. She oversees a staff of 65 and has worked with the foundation for over 30 years, the last 10 in her current position.
“One of the primary areas that we fundraise for is scholarships to provide that opportunity for students to get that degree. We also focus on endowed faculty positions. If you have the right students on campus, you have to have great faculty and great programs – another area we support,” she said.
The university is in the middle of the $500 million Forever UND comprehensive campaign

running from July 2018 through Dec. 31, 2026. Capital infrastructure projects, student scholarships, faculty and research, and programs are listed as priorities. A $175 million goal was set for capital projects, includ ing the completed Nistler College of Business and Public Administration.
“That was a great partnership with our donors and with our state. This was a $70 million overall project – we raised $50 million and the state topped it off at $20 million. Our donors love to have that partnership with leaders, not just on campus, but across the state,” Carlson Zink said.
Additional key capital projects include a modern STEM complex and the new Flight Operations Center, as well as a new softball stadium, renovation of Merrifield Hall, and the Nodak Insurance Company Sports Performance Center. Other goals of the campaign include $125 million for student scholarships, $120 million for faculty and research, and $80 million for programs and priority needs.
“Within the campaign, what we do every day, is focus on scholarships, faculty, programs and infrastructure,” she said.
The best way to secure funding for all these initiatives is through building relationships and sharing stories – both donor stories as well as stories of the institution.
“We could go across the country, visit with an alum that hasn’t been to campus in 40 years, and when they start talking about their time on campus, it’s like they’re immediately back at the University of North Dakota,” Carlson Zink said. “They tell you about how impactful that was and we get to share the stories of what’s going on today and how impactful their gift is to students today. That piece hasn’t changed.”
Foundation leaders agree that what has changed is the cost to do anything - construct a building, expand a program, and even attend classes, which is why scholarships are important and giving back is crucial.
“We have an outstanding alumni base, we really do. We’re proud of the success they’ve had and proud of how they give back to UND, and how they really care about the students here today and want to make sure they have the same great experience that they did many years ago. It’s really an honor to be able to do this work,” Carlson Zink said.
No matter how contributions are made – through scholarships, endowments, estate gifts or memorial gifts – donors can make a profound difference for the institution and those who are educated there.

RJ Zavoral & Sons, a more than 70-year-old family business based in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, is the general contractor on a landfill expansion project in Bismarck. The project’s scope of work includes excavation, installing a composite landfill liner system and various site improvements.
The city of Bismarck received a 10-year permit renewal for the existing landfill facility. During the permit renewal process, the impacts from the previous disposal operations at the facility were analyzed, and the facility was evaluated for its long-term use as the city’s waste handling and disposal site. Houston Engineering Inc. worked with the city’s committee to establish a direction for Bismarck’s future waste management needs.
Once long-term planning goals and objectives were identified, implementation strategies were developed along with the associated financial requirements. In addition, Houston Engineering Inc. completed engineering plans for the pro-
posed municipal solid waste expansion identified in the master plan.
Ben Horken, field operations manager at RJ Zavoral & Sons, said the company worked on the Bismarck site back in 2019 during the first expansion of the landfill.
“We were there working during the pandemic, doing cell one of the landfill project,” Horken said. “We were able to work because most of our guys were in machines. We had to adjust some transportation, but were able to stay isolated pretty well.”
On this current project, dubbed “Cell 2,” about 950,000 cubic yards of material are being moved and a 70-foot deep excavation was done over 10 acres. This will tie into the existing landfill cell. A drainage piping layer will be placed over the synthetic liner and granular material will be put on top of that.
“We’ve done the excavation and built a four-foot clay liner at the bottom and are awaiting a synthetic liner to be installed over the whole 10-acre site. Then we’ll cover that with sand,” Horken said.
RJ Zavoral & Sons had about 40 employees on site for the major excavation work and has now pared that down to 8-10 workers, he said. The project is expected to be complete mid-September.
“We’re a full-service company that can do underground paving and earthworks in the tristate area, basically anything within 300 miles of Grand Forks,” Horken said.
The company was formed in 1951 by Robert John Zavoral, who was Horken’s grandfather.
“He was a one-man dozer company, who started working for farmers in the valley around Grand Forks and expanded it with his sons. He then started adding employees. There are five first cousins in the business and an uncle still working,” Horken said.
The company has 40-50 employees working on the F-M Diversion project, building the 2B levy that’s on the Wild Rice River at I-94. RJ Zavoral & Sons will also be building a new airport runway for the city of Karlstad, Minnesota in the near future.
ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University has announced that Dr. Sal Villegas, an assistant professor of management in the School of Business, will transition to lead the banking and financial services programs at Northern State University. This month, we spotlight 50 of the region’s best places to work in 2024. Some of the companies listed here are repeat honorees – many for consecutive years – and a few are new to the list.
In total, Prairie Business received more than 1,700 nominations from employees, whose testaments show that people are excited about their jobs and the businesses that provide them.
The way in which organizations treat their employees, clients and business partners goes a long way in describing the culture of a company. When people feel valued and appreciated, when they have a voice and take pride in their work, it’s reflected in their job per-
formance. Also important is how a company supports its employees by helping them grow. Providing a healthy work-life balance and the benefits it offers are important factors in the success and well-being of a company and its employees. These are things that make employees want to stay long-term.
Take a look at this year’s list. These organizations are doing things right.
Short biographies of each company (in their own words) are provided on the following pages.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THE HONOREES AND THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO IN THE REGION!

DIGNITARIES WERE ON HAND JULY 22 TO MARK THE OPENING OF A NEW PASTA EXTRUSION CENTER IN MINOT AT AGT FOODS DURING AN OPEN HOUSE AND RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY. SUBMITTED
Minot, N.D. – AGT Foods CEO Murad Al-Katib and members of the North Dakota U.S. Congressional Delegation joined the North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner, the Minot Area Chamber EDC (MACEDC) and the community July 22 in marking the opening of the new AGT Foods - Extrusion Center in Minot. The Extrusion Center continues to put AGT Foods and Minot at the center of innovation in both pulse-based ingredients and now extruded products such as gluten-free pasta.
“AGT Foods is proud to open our Extrusion Center of Excellence in Minot. This community has been a key part of our operations in the United States and in the great State of North Dakota, with this being our second facility in Minot,” said Al-Katib. “The opportunity to develop and produce innovative plant-based products made in this new facility, such as our gluten-free pasta
including our Veggi line, extruded crispy snacks, meat alternatives that are being used in burgers and other meat substitutes as well as pulse ingredients for food companies and some of the best known consumer packaged goods brands, is exciting for AGT Foods and our team in Minot.“
“Our Minot Extrusion Center of Excellence is an important part of AGT’s growth and our business strategy as we continue to offer high quality, plant-based products,” he continued. “North Dakota and the agriculture sector here has a long history of growing high-quality pulses and grains, and has logistics advantages to distribute these products in the U.S.A. and around the globe as well. Demand for plant-based protein and gluten-free products is growing and we are proud to produce and deliver our plant-based and gluten-free products from farm to fork from right here in Minot.”
With the renovated multi-million-dollar facility, AGT Foods’ long-term goal is to position the location and the region as the center of gluten-free pasta production and packaging in North America.
“North Dakota is the number one producer of pulse crops in the nation, and that comes as a result of our efforts to attract added-value agriculture investments, like AGT’s recent expansion, which gives our pulse growers a local market and reduced transportation costs,” said U.S. Sen. John Hoeven (N.D.). “Value-added processing facilities like this solidify our state as an ag powerhouse for the world. That’s exactly why I’ve worked since my time as governor to prioritize projects like AGT’s extrusion plant, while supporting agriculture research to strengthen our

ability to grow all kinds of crops in our state with better yields and lower input costs. However, at the end of the day, all of this hinges on providing an adequate safety net for our producers, so they can continue growing the highest-quality, lowest-cost food supply in the world. That is why we continue our efforts to keep the farm in the farm bill.”
“Today’s event commemorates an exciting addition to our agricultural processing capabilities here in North Dakota,” said U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer (N.D.). “This investment in Minot is a recognition of the critical role our state plays in feeding the country and world. Congratulations to the team at AGT Foods on their new Extrusion Center.”
The Extrusion Center currently features one production line with more than 9 million pounds of capacity with the ability to expand to more than 40 million pounds of gluten-free pasta, making the Minot facility one of the largest gluten-free pasta production facilities in the world.
“Congratulations to AGT Foods on their new Extrusion Center in Minot,” said North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. “This is a welcome addition to our value-added agriculture chain in the state and will assist producers throughout the region in bringing greater value to their crops while continuing to showcase the agricultural innovation and excellence that exists in North Dakota.”
“We are very proud as a community, region and state to see the continued growth of AGT Foods in Minot, North Dakota,” said Minot Area Chamber EDC President and CEO Brekka Kramer. “As one of the region’s largest employers, AGT Foods is highly influential in growing the value-added agriculture industry and we are excited to see what the future holds as they position the new Extrusion Center and Minot to be the heart of innovation and growth in a variety of products, such as gluten-free pasta.”
The Extrusion Center joins more than $100 million in existing AGT Foods facilities in Minot and around the area that have offered services for producers in the region and state for more than a decade.
