The popular cafe will relocate to the old Lloyds Bank building in Liverpool Road, which has stood empty since July 2016. It is an exciting new chapter for owners Fay and Ryan Johnson, who set up shop on the corner of Priory Lane two years ago. Fay said: “This is something Ryan and I really have dreamed of. We are both real foodies – we met when we worked at Northcote Manor, which was like military training in the food world – and that is something we really want to carry on in the new premises. Ryan will have the kitchen of his dreams and I will have the bar and restaurant of mine.” “The frontage and interior of our shop will be exactly how we want it and will match the standards of Ryan’s amazing food. We will still have the same welcoming feel and high standards but the bigger premises will allow us to offer even more in the way of quality breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas.” “There is a real community buzz in Penwortham and it is so nice to have everyone behind us. BEN’S HEARING LOSS A modern day success story

Vogue® - designed by Independent Hearing Specialists for Independent Hearing Professionals to reduce the impact of hearing loss on people’s lives! World Champion Rugby player Ben Cohen MBE (right) turned to local independent hearing specialists for help with his hearing and now is a proud wearer of Vogue® hearing aids. “If a few words from myself can help you make the right decision when seeking a hearing care service then I will be very happy. My hearing loss story goes back to my birth. I got by for years with the usual denial and avoidance of seeking help.”

“I was fitted with Vogue® hearing aids and after a few consultations and fine tuning sessions, I now hear better than ever. The sound is so clear and very natural. My phone calls are streamed to both ears, which means I hear phone calls better than most people!

“Five years ago I decided to seek help and spend time and money with some hearing aid stores. I had three attempts, but each time the hearing aids ended up in a drawer.”

My TV also streams clearly to my hearing aids. With hindsight, I could have saved lots of time if I had gone to a Vogue hearing specialist first and invested in these brilliant hearing aids.”

“I spoke at a conference about my hearing loss and its impact on my family and career. Over dinner I was introduced to an independent Audiologist and they listened to my previous experiences with hearing aids. It was apparent that they understood my problems and individual needs and highlighted the areas where the aftercare may have failed me, so we arranged a consultation. After some tests I was advised on my options that also included helping me with my tinnitus.”

EAR WAX REMOVAL SERVICE We offer ear wax removal by microsuction and irrigation (we can usually offer an appointment the same day). We supply a wide range of hearing protection for people exposed to noise such as shooting, music and motorcycling. Also swim plugs and earplugs for sleeping.

“My story ends with a crucial message - to get the best from your hearing, you need an attentive Audiologist that genuinely cares about your hearing, then sees you often to keep your ears working at their very best.”

Which?

HEARING AID REPORT Did you know that for the second time in a row we (your local independent family hearing specialists) have come out on top again! We are very proud that the local independent hearing specialists and family businesses came out on top with a massive 5 GOLD STARS for choice, prices and service.

Wellbeing

This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. Events for people of all ages and abilities are taking place at Moor Park, Preston on the 15th and 16th June. Sarah Hunter, Cancer Research UK’s Preston Event Manager, said: “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients in Preston access to the latest treatments.” She continued: “Taking part in our Race for Life events enables like-minded people to get together, remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those who have survived.” “Our Race for Life events have been women-only since they started over 25 years ago. But we now feel the time is right to open them up so everyone - women, men and children – has the chance to participate together. It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.” “You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.” Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. The charity’s life-saving work relies on the public’s support. Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, Cancer Research UK was able to spend more than £28 million last year in the North West on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research. Today's R Walker & Sons (Preston) Ltd was founded by Roger Walker; in 1896 he established himself in business in Back Lane (now Market Street) opposite Trinity Church working as a carpenter, joiner and funeral director and trading from three cottages with a workshop on the first floor. For the times Roger Walker was quite unique in having obtained his City & Guilds Certificates not only in Carpentry & Joinery in 1886 but also went on to obtain a similar qualification in Brickwork & Masonry two years later. That dual qualification was a clear indicator of his powers of application and persistence. In the early part of the 20th century what had in the course of years become R Walker & Sons was involved in building many of the buildings which shaped Preston town centre as we now know it, including working on Miller Arcade. R Walker & Sons (Preston) Ltd has always held an active role in the promotion of the building industry in the local area. Indeed it can boast four past presidents of the Preston & District Building Trades Employers Association, more than any other current member. The late 1980s proved pivotal for the company when in 1988 with the purchase of adjacent property for the manufacture of uPVC windows and doors. The Walker Windows name has since become synonymous with both quality and integrity within the domestic and commercial replacement uPVC window markets. David, Graham and Grant have increased the growth of the company each year through quality workmanship and the firm's reputation as one of Preston's oldest family companies. An enviable client portfolio has been established which includes Lancashire County Council, Preston NHS Trust and Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde NHS Trust. And though Preston prices may be somewhat higher now than in 1850 the company still guarantees to present a highly competitive quote.

The festival took place over five days and nights with more than 60 gigs, music workshops and talks that featured a variety of headline music stars from across the spectrum of jazz and blues music. If this wasn’t enough, it was also preceded by a ‘Women in Jazz’ workshop session, aimed at empowering female musicians to improvise and create music and encourage dialogue in this semi-rural setting.

The 250-seat auditorium at The Grand was also a hub of diversity throughout the festival programme, hosting European hot property including

Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset and emerging world music virtuosic xylophonist player Moussa Dembele, from Burkina Faso. One of the great qualities of the Ribble Valley Jazz Festival is to take a cohesive community approach which contrasts

well to more highbrow tastes. A lively free-to-attend “fringe” event attracted revellers into the streets with a street festival on Saturday. This featured community bands, party bands, barber shop quartets, Astrid, a 9-year-old jazz singer from Liverpool, and a delightful school choir from Elms Bank special education School.

and Claire Martin not only performed a mesmerising duo concert at The Grand, but they hung around to present an intimate singing workshop for 12 singers on the following day. Preston-based improvisation group Cold Bath Street also delivered a music workshop for musicians of all ages, before inviting them onto the stage of the Old School Room to play live in front of a packed audience. Young Ribble Valley musicians also starred, with members of the highly regarded Clitheroe Royal Grammar School Swing Band having the opportunity to work with professional jazz outfit Bonsai, who wrote a specially commissioned piece to tie in with the Festival’s 10th birthday edition. “It has been another hugely successful festival, promoting cultural diversity, community cohesion and a brilliant range of music,” said Festival Director Geoff Jackson.

Throughout the weekend, there was a blues-heavy programme at The Rose and Crown, highlighted by veteran Jacky Bond while Victor Brox brought his well-oiled group to the upstairs of the beautifully restored Holmes Mill. Encouraging participation is a key component of the Festival’s enduring legacy. Top UK jazz singers Liane Carrol

“The festival could not happen without the tremendous support we receive from volunteers, venues, the borough and town council, the Arts Council and of course, the audiences. “The culture of Music and Arts in the Ribble Valley is growing and making a big contribution, both to the tourism economy and the cultural ecology of the area.” For further information please go to: rvjazzfestival.co.uk or visit our Facebook site, @RVJazzEventsFestivals

Antiques Roadshow Presented by the BBC Join Fiona Bruce and the Antiques Roadshow team when they film at Lytham Hall, Lancashire on Tuesday 11 June 2019.

Roadshow is about the story of an object and its owner as much as about its value. We are never short of people bringing along items that tell a hell of a story, which can be very exciting, poignant or funny, sometimes, all three. Or it can tell us something about ourselves.

The Roadshow brings together a team of the country’s leading authorities on arts and antiques to offer free valuations for your family heirlooms or car boot bargains.

“Even after all these years people still have the most amazing things tucked away in their attics and garages and I can’t wait to see what they pull out of their bags and trolleys in 2019.”

Each Roadshow event attracts around 4,000 people, who come along to find out if they might own a missing masterpiece and find out the priceless history of their items. Whether it’s a £100,000 painting or a £5 cup and saucer, everyone gets an expert opinion on their treasure. Around 15,000 items are valued at each show by Roadshow experts from which around 60 are filmed for inclusion in the two shows made at each location. Last year the specialists discovered unseen masterpieces by Mexican artist Diego Rivera worth £100,000, jewels from the Titanic and a unique Brooklyn Dodgers baseball with a value as extraordinary as its story. Antiques Roadshow is one of the BBC’s most popular factual programmes and around six million people regularly watch on Sunday evenings. Fiona Bruce has presented the show for the past 12 years: “So much of what you see on the Antiques 30 | GET THE DEAL • JUNE 2019

Some of the most fascinating finds to come to light over the years include wristwatch owned by Lawrence of Arabia, which went on to sell for £34,000, a chest eventually proven to have belonged to Queen Anne and a leather jacket worn by John F Kennedy and valued at up to £300,000. Many objects featured on the Roadshow have been found in strange places such as diamond jewels found sewn into an upholstered chair and two important painting discovered by the new owners of a house in their loft. On Tuesday 11 June Antiques Roadshow will be visiting the Fylde coast for the first time since 2008. Lytham Hall is an 18th-century Georgian country house with a fascinating history. Once owned by the ‘colourful’ Clifton family for over four centuries, whose antics inspired author Evelyn Waugh to write Brideshead Revisited.

Antiques Robert Murphy, the series producer of Antiques Roadshow, said: “We’re looking forward to a bumper turnout at Lytham Hall and can’t wait to see what kind of cherished objects emerge from the attic! “It’s a great free, family day out and you can see how we make one of BBC One’s most popular programmes. Our team of experts are on hand to help visitors discover the hidden history of their objects – you never know, it might just be your item that turns out to be something very special and potentially very valuable!”

Entry to the show is free, everyone is welcome, and no tickets or preregistration is required. Visitors are welcome to just turn up on the day but they can also share their stories about the special items they are bringing along. Email shareyourstory@bbc.co.uk with your name, address, telephone number, a description of the item and how you come to own it and a photo. Unfortunately, we cannot consider any submissions without this information. Alternatively, write to Antiques Roadshow, BBC, Whiteladies Road, Bristol BS8 2LR.
