Penwortham Girls’ High School As a society we have a duty to ensure that our children have the brightest start in life so they can achieve to their potential – and a good education is the best way of achieving that. In South Ribble we have some of the best schools in the country, with more and more of our children being taught in good and outstanding schools. One such school is Penwortham Girls’ High School (PGHS) on Cop Lane. Achieving ‘outstanding’ in all areas, the inspectors said that “teachers have very high expectations” of their pupils and, in turn, the “students’ behaviour and attitudes to learning are excellent.” Pupils at South Ribble schools are leading the way across the county, recently winning a huge haul of awards in the LEP Education Awards, including the Young Scientist/Engineer Award for a PGHS student. It is thanks to the dedication and hard work of the staff and the students who make this possible.

However, whilst I welcome the great news that regularly comes out of local schools, there are always other issues that the teachers have to deal with to make sure the children in their charge remain safe. Just before Christmas, a girl from PGHS was knocked down on Cop Lane. Although, fortunately she was not seriously injured, it just reminds us all that we need to be more careful when driving and parking around schools. I have been working with Lancashire County Council to deal with problem parking near to schools, and I am pleased that the enforcement team will be visiting every school in the borough throughout this academic year to advise parents at school pick-up time on safer parking. The team have visited Cop Lane twice this year already to give advice, and hand out fines where appropriate, so I would urge all parents when picking up your children from school to be mindful of where you are parking. What may be slightly more convenient for you may be putting the lives of children, including your own, in danger as they cross busy roads.

Summer is the season for sport. Whether it is tennis at Wimbledon, cricket at Lords or the lycra-clad athletes cycling through the mountains of the Alps in the Tour de France, British sportsmen and women over the past few years have been leading the way in the world. England have won the cricket World Cup, in the women’s football World Cup the lionesses finished fourth, and, as I write, the home nations are doing incredibly well in the netball World Cup. Andy Murray – the first British player to have won the men’s singles title at the championships since Fred Perry 79 years earlier – was back on the grass courts of Wimbledon playing tennis after injury almost forced his retirement.
But, as the founder of the modern Olympic Games said, it isn’t all about the winning, but the taking part. As a Health Minister I know the importance that sport plays in keeping us both physically and mentally well. Exercise doesn’t just help our bodies stay in shape, but it keeps our minds healthy too, and can combat feelings of loneliness. That is why, as the school summer holidays are upon us, the Government is investing £9.1 million to provide free meals and activities for around 50,000 disadvantaged children
outside of term time, to give them opportunities to keep fit and healthy, and stop them from being isolated. However, sport and exercise can offer much more to people – team sports can give a sense of belonging, of co-operation and the ability to work with others. To excel at a sport needs dedication and discipline, but even for those less able just trying can be a huge boost to someone’s self-esteem. On my visits to schools around the constituency I am always pleased to hear about how the PE and Sports Premium from the Government is being spent to help the children learn about resilience and build character. This £320 million fund is used by many schools not just to buy
more equipment, but to help get the children to competitions, so they can compete against other schools and children. I believe this healthy competition provides lessons for later in life and makes the children more
adaptable to what life will throw at them as they grow into adults. Tackling misbehaviour in schools is vital, as just one instance of bad behaviour in a classroom can disrupt the entire lesson for all the other children, and hold back their education. Sport and exercise can also provide a release of energy and tension, helping keep discipline in schools and aid the children in concentrating in lessons. As I cheered on our sports stars in the cricket, netball and women’s football World Cups, Andy Murray and Johanna Konta on the grass courts of Wimbledon and Geraint Thomas in the Tour de France, I will also be rooting for all our local amateur sportsmen and women, who gain so much joy and benefit from their activities. - Please do not hesitate to contact my office if I can help with any difficulties you may be facing. Five reasons why you don’t need financial advice! As independent financial planners, it’s common for us to hear all sorts of reasons why people don’t want or need financial advice. Here’s our list of the top five answers people give for not seeking the help of a financial adviser – and our reasons why we think you should. 1. It will cost too much It can sometimes be hard to judge the value of paying for financial advice, as it is intangible and some of the benefits will only become clearer over the longer term. A good adviser will bring order and organisation to all your financial affairs and also stop you from making financial mistakes that could cost you dearly. For around the same amount as an average family holiday, you can create and implement a plan that considers your entire financial life along with your aspirations and ambitions for the years ahead. 2. I don’t trust the financial services industry We completely understand this. The financial services sector has always had a problem with trust and, even though it’s ten years ago now, the financial crisis didn’t help. However, the financial planning profession has evolved significantly, with the focus being on clients’ lives and not just their money. The profession is also strictly regulated. Look for a Chartered or Certified Financial Planner, they are not only well qualified, but have to work to a strict ethical code. 3. I met with a financial adviser once – and never heard from them again Often we’ll speak to new clients who have had a bad experience with another adviser. A common complaint is that they met with them once, bought a product from them and then barely heard from them ever again. At Clearwater we have clients that we have been looking after for more than 10 years! We see them every year for an annual planning meeting and we have been with them through all their life transitions.
4. I don’t need financial advice – I can manage my investments myself Some people don’t feel that they don’t need any help in organising their finances and have all the knowledge they need to do it themselves. This may be true… but all the evidence suggests that you’ll make more money if you take advice. Investors reacting to news stories or short-term data will inevitably make bad decisions that destroy longer-term returns. We’re here to make sure investors avoid errors of judgment like this. Even the most savvy investor can benefit from some support at times of market volatility or when the media is screaming about the latest crisis. Investment decisions are complex and don’t exist in a vacuum – they should be considered in relation to tax, estate planning and crucially, the return needed to achieve financial freedom. The full picture needs to be assessed comprehensively so that a good investment return isn’t lost in tax for example. 5. I don’t need financial advice yet – I’ll get some in a few years People sometimes try to convince themselves that they’ve got plenty of time to make financial plans for the future, and that it doesn’t need to be done just yet. But every day counts! You might not need to buy any financial products, but you do need to have a plan for the future. The benefits of compounding over time mean there’s everything to gain from investing time and effort in your financial future today, and the reverse is also true: even missing out on a few years of contributions can have a dramatic effect on your outcome. The planning process is there to reassure you, it’s not something to be feared. The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll get there. Now is the time to take control of your financial life.
