GTCC Annual Report 2017

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1.

1.1. Introduction The German-Thai Chamber of Commerce (GTCC) in Bangkok is a member of the German Chambers of Commerce Worldwide Network (AHK), with 130 locations in 90 countries. Since its establishment in Bangkok in 1962, the GTCC has maintained itself as a reliable intermediary between German and Thai businesses, thus contributing to the dynamism of the economic development in both countries. In the course of 2017, GTCC put together over 120 events and activities that encouraged further development and interaction of the German-Thai business community within Thailand and abroad. Thanks to the high level of dedication of the GTCC team, recognition of the Chamber in the business community was heightened, enabling GTCC to constantly enjoy opportunities to collaborate closely with various partners and counterparts who added variety to the nature of GTCC services and activities.

1.2. Membership, Events and Communications By the end of fiscal year 2017, GTCC had reached a significant milestone as it had welcomed more than 600 members. This remarkable achievement maintained GTCC’s position as one of the biggest and fastest growing bilateral European Chambers of Commerce in Thailand. With 81 new members acquired, 517 members renewed and 14 members’ applications in progress, GTCC encompasses business people who are high-level executives and decision-makers from an all-embracing corporate sector of Thailand. GTCC was dedicated to providing its members with a unique set of almost 90 demand-driven activities and events that attracted participants from every industry and sector — from smaller businesses to global corporations — with useful and timely insights into different fields of business information and oppor tunities. To serve GTCC members with regard to essential information about the business and industry sectors in Thailand, GTCC issued two publications: UPDATE Magazine and the Membership Directory and one e-Newsletter “e-UPDATE”.

1.3. Consultancy services The Consultancy Services Department supports the entry of clients to the Thai, German and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) markets through its various services that are flexible and tailor-made to suite specific needs. These services include market studies, market information, business research, business match-making, technical workshops, conferences and the organisation of exclusive business delegations.

Energy (BMWi) as well as German Federal States offer various programmes. The GTCC is actively involved in many of those programmes: for example, the German Energy Solutions Initiative (BMWi). The Consultancy Services Department plays a vital role in supporting German companies from various industries and the service sector in gaining first-hand experience of the Thai market, thus paving the way for potential future business activities in Thailand as well as in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

1.4. Trade Fairs The GTCC is the official representative of leading German trade fair companies with excellent reputations worldwide, including Messe Berlin GmbH, Deutsche Messe AG, Messe München GmbH, NürnbergMesse GmbH and Spielwarenmesse eG. In order to ensure smooth and successful par ticipation in German trade fairs, the GTCC offers comprehensive services and provides a one-stop service for Thai companies. Moreover, the GTCC acts as the link between Thailand and events in Asia that are organised by German trade fair companies. The GTCC also organises comprehensive business delegation packages to trade fairs in Germany, including factory visits and B2B meetings. The Chamber not only plays a vital role in German trade fair consultancy, it also enhances business opportunities in the European Union market.

1.5. German-Thai Dual Excellence Education GTDEE-Thai Dual Excellence Education (GTDEE) is the co-ordination office for higher vocational education based on German quality standard in the “Apprenticeship Programme”, and is operated by the GTCC. The GTDEE apprenticeship programme is a two-year vocational programme with elements of the German dual education system. Apprentices spend less than 30 per cent of their time at a vocational college and at least 70 per cent in a par tner company. The GTDEE Depar tment acts as the centre, providing interested companies and colleges with all types of required support throughout the programme. In addition, GTDEE offers a Quality Assurance (QA) for Vocational Educational and Training ser vices for Thai vocational institutions, to standardise school quality in development and performance of teachers and students. On 1 November 2017, GTDEE was awarded the copyright for all procedures and content of the QA in vocational colleges and schools, issued by the Depar tment of Intellectual Property, Thailand.

The existing means of communications were constantly improved to make them more appealing and to better serve the need of its members and public. In September, GTCC took an important step by participating in DIHK’s framework for new website development. A new website and online member directory which will be enhanced in relation to user-friendliness and completeness of information and available on mobile devices will be fully launched in mid-2018. A new upgrade on CRM software together with an implementation on a new event and membership management software will better enable the team to optimize engagement among its members. The Chamber’s most important resource is its members—the hundreds of reputable companies in Thailand and Germany. The 2017 membership year ended with a final count of 612 which is an increase of 42 compared to the 2016 end-of-year total of 570. This represents an overall increase of 7.35 per cent. The population of new members remains strong and shows a significant increase (12.5 per cent). There is, also, a slight increase of renewals (3.8 per cent). GTCC constantly monitor membership and identify characteristics of member behaviour on new signing up, renewing and discontinuing membership to develop programmes to improve overall member satisfaction. The chart below illustrates the membership trend and development in the number of members from 2008 up to 2017.

GERMAN-THAI DUAL EXCELLENCE EDUCATION

7.

7.2. GTDEE service portfolio GTDEE has established a set of services for all participating partners, to ensure sustainable implementation of Dual Vocational Education and Training (DVET) in several areas. To ensure dual training on a permanently high level, companies, colleges and students interested in the GTDEE programme must go through several assessments to screen their competence status. Therefore, GTDEE has developed a selection procedure for companies, colleges and students. A company or college that provides “dual training” must fulfill certain requirements regarding the suitability of the training premises. A quality analysis system (DVQD) developed by GTDEE identifies gaps in several areas, i.e., internal management, infrastructure and methods of teaching. After the identification of the gaps, GTDEE consults on all issues in DVET by advising on curricula or training plan development or by conducting different types of technical workshops and seminars. In order to enhance a collaborative exchange between the co-operating partners, GTDEE has developed a set of services to exchange relevant information between teachers and trainers, or for use of methods of relevant training issues in technical professions. The objective of the examinations provided by GTDEE is to ensure a comparable nationwide standard in theoretical and practical examinations that will be certified by the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce.

7.3. Activities planned for 2018 These activities are related to the progress of the sustainability of dual vocational education. Since education is a continuous development process, GTDEE will continue to work on refining dual standards in Thailand, with the goal of sustainability in order to push Thailand towards becoming the hub in ASEAN as follows: 1. A GTDEE intensive course for preparing apprentices for the GTCC Final Examination 2018; 2. The GTCC Final Examination 2018 for 76 apprentices, batch 2016 in five professions from five companies (certified by GTCC); 3. GTDEE Examination Preparation for the GTCC Interim Examination (PAL interim examination) in automotive mechatronics for the Mercedes-Benz Apprenticeship Programme 2017 and BMW Service Apprentice Programme 2017 4. GTCC Interim Examination in Automotive Mechatronics for Mercedes-Benz Apprenticeship Programme 2017 and BMW Service Apprentice Programme 2017, based on the “PAL interim examination”; 5. “GTDEE Train the Trainer” (AdA - Ausbildung der Ausbilder) International Programme for trainers from company partners; 6. “GTDEE Teach the Teacher” Workshop for teachers from college partners; 7. GTDEE Camp for apprentices training under company partners to introduce all the necessary information before they start the apprenticeship at their company partners; 8. School assessment, development and the establishment of a quality management system for vocational schools; 9. Development of the vocational training committee and working groups; 10. German educational training, workshops and assessment promotion for company partners such as “train the trainer” activities and quality.
