2023 Holiday Gala

Page 1

Presented by the Georgia State University School of Music

Welcome to our 26th Annual Holiday Gala!

We are thrilled to bring the sounds of the season to you this afternoon. On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of the School of Music, I hope you enjoy this collaborative production created with you in mind. Today, you will hear a sampling of the many areas and specializations from within the School of Music. From a jazzy winter wonderland to the joyous Feast of Carols, you are sure to be moved by these festive selections.

Please join me in thanking Professor Kathryn Hartgrove for her work as artistic director for this year’s Holiday Gala. Her thoughtful eye has curated a delightful offering for today’s program. We are especially honored to share the stage with Dr. Bridget Blake, alumna Melissa Joseph and the Atlanta Music Project’s Senoir Youth Choir.

Today’s presentation represents countless hours of hard work and collaboration by nearly 300 members of the School of Music. I hope that, in addition to the wonderful music, the spirit of teamwork and togetherness transcends the stage and sets an example for what can be when working in community and fellowship. As you leave this afternoon, I hope the melodies make you sing, and the program reminds us all how special it is to be in harmony.

On behalf of the School of Music, the College of the Arts, and Georgia State University, we wish you a most magical holiday season. Now let’s sound the drums, strike up the band, warm up our voices and take an “A” as we present the 2023 Holiday Gala.

GSU First Lady

Dr. Bridget Blake is the First Lady of Georgia State University. In her professional career, she serves as a principal business analyst and systems engineer for the MITRE Corporation, working to improve the quality of the nation’s healthcare. Dr. Bridget, as she is known around campus, received her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech. She holds a master’s degree in business administration with concentrations in management and finance from Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate in business administration with a focus on leadership decision-making from Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business. At Georgia State, Dr. Bridget uses her expertise and time to participate in financial literacy programming for students, advocate for positive mental health initiatives, increase awareness and support for different learning styles, and promote the arts while serving on the board of the Rialto Theater. She and President Blake have two sons, Brendan and Bryce.

GSU Alumna; MM Voice Performance ‘17

Haitian-American soprano Melissa Joseph, lauded for her “theatrically vivid and funny” performances, captivated audiences with her debut as Musetta in La Bohème at Opera Philadelphia this spring. The Washington Post hailed her rendition as “showstopping.” In the summer of 2023, Ms. Joseph served as a Steans Singer Fellow at Ravinia Steans Music Institute in Highland Park, IL. Additionally, she returned to Opera Theatre of St. Louis as a Gerdine Young Artist, covering the titular role in the reimagined Treemonisha (by Scott Joplin and Damien Sneed) and portraying Mrs. Gleaton in Floyd’s Susannah. Last year, Ms. Joseph made a notable debut with OTSL as Lily in the world premiere of Tobias Picker’s opera Awakenings during their 21-22 season. Her cover roles that season included Ruth (Awakenings) and Micaëla (Carmen). Meliss was recognized as the District Award Winner in the 2023 Minneapolis District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. A graduate of Georgia State University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music in Vocal Performance, Melissa showcased her talent in roles such as Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Micaëla (Carmen), and Pamina (Die Zauberflöte). Formerly based in Boston, her debuts included performances with White Snakes Projects, Mass Opera, New England Conservatory Summer Opera Workshop, and New England Opera Intensive. Despite the virtual transition of programs and competitions, Melissa remained an active performer and competitor. She participated in virtual recitals, notably one curated by Angel Blue that highlighted artists internationally. Melissa also took part in the Fort Worth Opera masterclass series conducted by Jennifer Rowley and Martina Arroyo. As a dedicated competitor, Ms. Joseph achieved notable success, including a 2022 district win in the North Carolina Met Opera National Council Auditions, semi-finalist placement in the 2021 Annapolis Opera competition, and most recently, receiving the Hibbet-Savoca award from the TCO Next competition. She was also awarded a Resident Artist position, where she debuted the role of Sally in Mark Campbell’s Stone Soup. Beyond her musical pursuits, Melissa is deeply passionate about college access work. She has positively impacted over 10,000 students in the metro-Boston area by assisting them in applying for financial aid for college. The Atlanta Music Project Senior Youth Choir is the top-performing choir of the Atlanta Music Project (AMP), a non-profit organization providing world-class music training and performance opportunities supporting youth growth and development.

The Atlanta Music Project Senior Youth Choir is a select, mixed-voice ensemble consisting of some of the finest high school-aged singers in metro Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Under the direction of conductor B.E. Boykin, this advanced vocal ensemble performs both standard choral literature and songs representing the culture of their communities. The choir has performed at renowned venues across Atlanta, including the Cobb Energy Centre for the Performing Arts, Georgia World Congress Center, and Spivey Hall. In 2019, the choir was the first choral ensemble invited to perform at Mercedes-Benz Stadium: home of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC.

The AMP Senior Youth Choir was awarded both the Choral Sweepstakes and Grand Champion Trophies at the 2022 Southern Star Music Festival. Additional recognitions include invitations to compete at the 2024 World Choir Games, perform at the 2022 Georgia American Choral Directors Association Fall Conference, and perform at the Mayor of Atlanta’s 2023 State of the City Address. Most recently, the AMP Senior Youth Choir was featured on National Public Radio’s From the Top, America’s largest national platform celebrating young classically-trained musicians. The choir regularly collaborates with renowned artists and has performed alongside Grammy-winning performers such as operatic baritone Edward Parks, R&B singer Monica, and gospel rapper Lecrae.

Founded in 2010, the Atlanta Music Project operates in under-resourced communities with a mission to empower youth to realize their possibilities through music.
