Anthony Peña

Leadership with Purpose, Vision with Impact

From immigrant roots to the presidency of one of the most influential organizations in the independent supermarket industry, Anthony Peña represents a new generation of leadership defined by vision, integrity, and community commitment.

Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in a family that came to the United States in search of opportunity and a better future, Anthony’s journey has been shaped by hard work, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility toward others. Today, as owner and operator of Key Food and Save A Lot supermarkets, he leads with a clear mission: to ensure his stores are not just places of business, but essential pillars of service, access, and stability in the communities they serve.

Now, as the President of the National Supermarket Association (NSA), Anthony Peña stands at the forefront of a new era for independent grocers. His agenda is bold and forward-looking focused on fair pricing, supplier accountability, innovation, and unity within the industry. More than a businessman, he is a bridge-builder between entrepreneurs, institutions, and communities.

1. GCM: Your story begins as an immigrant with a strong family foundation. How did your upbringing shape the leader you are today?

Anthony Peña:

Growing up as the son of immigrant parents who came to this country in search of opportunity and dignity taught me the value of hard work, humility, and perseverance. Being the eldest of three siblings also gave me a strong sense of responsibility from a young age. My parents’ sacrifices shaped my character and showed me that success is not just about personal achievement, but about opening doors for others and giving back to the community that supports you.

2. GCM: You are the owner and operator of Key Food and Save A Lot supermarkets. What philosophy guides the way you run your businesses?

Anthony Peña:

I believe a supermarket should be more than a place of commerce it should be a pillar of the community. My philosophy is to lead with purpose, making sure our stores provide access, stability, and quality service. We serve real families every day, and that responsibility guides every decision we make, from how we treat customers to how we support our employees.

3. GCM: What does it mean to you, personally and professionally, to serve as President of the National Supermarket Association?

Anthony Peña:

It is a great honor and a big responsibility. The NSA represents thousands of independent business owners who work tirelessly to serve their communities. Personally, it is a way to give back to an industry that gave my family and me so many opportunities. Professionally, it’s a chance to help shape a stronger, more united, and more sustainable future for independent grocers nationwide.

4. GCM: The independent supermarket sector faces many challenges today. What do you see as the top priorities for the NSA under your leadership?

Anthony Peña:

Our top priorities are fair pricing, supplier accountability, and creating the conditions for independent operators to compete and grow. We also want to strengthen the voice of our members and make sure they have the tools and support they need to reinvest in their businesses and their communities.

5. GCM: You’ve spoken about fair pricing, supplier accountability, and modernization. How do you plan to turn these goals into concrete results?

Anthony Peña:

Through collaboration and unity. We are working closely with suppliers, policymakers, and industry partners to advocate for better practices and more transparent relationships. At the same time, we want to help our members modernize their operations so they can remain competitive while staying true to their community roots.

6. GCM: A new generation of young entrepreneurs is becoming more involved in the association. How important is this generational shift for the future of the industry?

Anthony Peña:

It’s absolutely essential. This new generation brings fresh ideas, energy, and a new way of thinking. At the same time, they respect the foundation built by those who came before them. That combination of experience and innovation is what will keep our industry strong for decades to come.

7. GCM: Leadership often comes with difficult decisions. What values guide you when facing tough choices?

Anthony Peña:

Integrity, unity, and responsibility. I always try to think not only about what is best for one person or one business, but about what is best for the entire community and the industry as a whole. Leadership is about serving, not just deciding.

8. GCM: Looking ahead, what legacy would you like to leave at the NSA, and what message would you like to send to young entrepreneurs who dream of following a similar path?

Anthony Peña:

I would like to leave an NSA that is stronger, more united, and better prepared for the future. My message to young entrepreneurs is simple: leadership is not defined by where you start, but by how you uplift others along the way. Stay grounded, work hard, honor your roots, and never forget that real success is measured by the impact you have on others.

“Leadership is not defined by where you start, but by how you uplift others along the way.”
“El liderazgo no se define por dónde comienzas, sino por a cuántos elevas en el camino.”
“Success is achieved by combining three factors: experience, patience, and opportunity. But first, God.”

As an entrepreneur, Zapata owns four supermarkets in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Patterson, New Jersey, providing jobs for over 200 people directly and impacting nearly 600 more indirectly.

Reflecting on his journey, Zapata emphasizes the values that guided him: faith, hard work, and community service. As he says:

“Success is achieved by combining three factors: experience, patience, and opportunity. But first, God.”

Through perseverance and vision, Frank Félix Zapata has become a leading figure in the Hispanic supermarket industry and a role model for immigrant entrepreneurs.

ABOUT LEO

Leonardo “Leito” Espinal embodies the essence of hard work, commitment, and constant growth within the supermarket industry. His story begins in San José de las Matas, a small town in Santiago, Dominican Republic, where he was born on April, 1971, to José Espinal and CarmenMercedes Espinal.

From a young age, Leonardo was raised with strong values and an exemplary work ethic instilled by his parents and older brother. At 15, he emigrated with his family to the United States in search of new opportunities.

It was in a small bodega in Queens, where his parents worked, that Leo first discovered the world of retail a universe that would later define his professional journey.

In 1992, at just 21 years old, his brothers opened their first store under the Associated Supermarket brand in Corona, Queens. Leo used this platform to learn every detail of the industry: operations, leadership, and customer service. This formative experience marked the beginning of a path that would transform his life.

In 2001, driven by his vision and entrepreneurial spirit, Leonardo and his partner Anthony Espinal acquired the family supermarket, giving birth to Grupo A&E. What began as a single store gradually became one of the most successful independent groups in the New York metropolitan area, with multiple locations and a presence in several states.

Leo and Anthony innovated by creating a robust self-supply channel and developing their own chains: Cherry Valley and City Fresh Market.

As Senior Vice President of A&E, Leonardo has been key in driving expansion, operational efficiency, and the organizational culture that defines the group today.

But beyond business, Leo recognizes that his greatest blessing came when he met Rut, the love of his life. Her unconditional support has been the foundation of his personal growth.

Their family happiness was completed with the birth of their children, Leander and Valentina, whom he considers the driving force behind his every day.

In 1984, he entered PUCMM in Santiago to study Business Administration, thanks to a scholarship granted by J. Armando Bermúdez. He graduated in 1988 and shortly thereafter emigrated to reunite with his mother, beginning a new chapter in his life.

Upon his arrival in the United States, the Flores family became a key source of support and a springboard into the supermarket industry, where he began his career with the Pioneer chain.

Samuel Collado began his journey with the NSA in 1993, during the presidency of Pablo Espinal. Over the years, he held strategic positions within the organization, including serving twice as Vice President and as Public Relations Officer, until assuming the presidency in 2022.

“It fills me with pride to see how a new generation is taking on the responsibility and vision of leading the NSA. True leadership is not just about directing, but about showing the way, building opportunities, and leaving strong foundations for those who come next. The NSA has been a channel of solutions, closing many gaps in the system, without ever forgetting what matters most: to serve. Because true leadership is having the ability to guide others and future gener ations toward a better tomorrow.”

Today, he is a member of KeyFood Co-op, being one of the first Hispanics to join this prestigious franchise. He is also a philanthropist and a successful entrepreneur in real estate and property development, both in the USA and abroad.

His legacy within the NSA has been key to the development of commerce in this nation and to strengthening the role of the association within the complex economic, social, and geopolitical context of this country, marked by deep cultural

and ethnic diversity. The organization has played an essential role in preserving and guaranteeing the food supply for the many communities that make up this nation.

One of the most significant achievements of his administration has been the NSA Scholarship Program, considered one of the institution’s best investments, benefiting countless young people and future generations.

Among his most significant achievements is the continuation and expansion of the NSA Scholarship Program, carried out under the guidance of the Board of Directors and with the active involvement of Association members. Through his leadership, the program reached a broader impact thanks to the generous contributions of manufacturers, d istributors, and service providers in the supermarket industry, positively benefiting students and their families in the community.

For Samuel Collado, seeing a third generation leadership team at the helm of the NSA today is a source of great pride, as it confirms that new blood continues to guide the destiny of this great institution.

“Leadership is built through commitment, integrity, and the willingness to serve something greater than oneself.”

Dominican Republic Shines at FITUR 2026

The Dominican Republic once again took center stage at FITUR 2026, the 46th edition of the Feria Internacional de Turismo held in Madrid, Spain, culminating on Sunday, January 26.

Over five dynamic days, the Caribbean nation showcased not just its world-famous beaches, but a diversified and forward looking tourism brand that continues to attract global business, investment, and cultural interest.

From the moment the Dominican stand opened, the message was clear: this is a destination that goes far beyond sun and sand. Under the immersive theme “Saborea el Paraíso”, visitors experienced the country’s rich culture, cuisine, music, and warm hospitality, all elements that continue to define its unique global appeal.

Record-Breaking Business and Investment Agreements

The highlight of the Dominican Republic’s participation was the announcement of over US$13.37 billion in business negotiations and commitments achieved during the fair a historic total that far exceeded prior years

and reinforced the country’s position as a prime destination for tourism investment. These agreements span hotel development, infrastructure, financing, and expanded connectivity.

Key financial institutions, including the Banco Popular Dominicano, Banco de Reservas, and Banco BHD, played crucial roles, securing substantial investment commitments through intensive meetings and negotiations that brought industry leaders together.

David Collado, Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, reflected on the country’s strong showing at FITUR:

“Our presence at FITUR 2026 has reaffirmed that the Dominican Republic is a diversified, competitive, and future‑ready destination on the global stage. We are not just promoting beautiful places , we are promoting culture, experiences, and real opportunities for investors and visitors alike. This success reflects our commitment to growth, innovation, and sustainable tourism development.”

These business outcomes are expected to help catalyze major growth in the coming years, including plans for nearly 10,000 new hotel rooms by 2028, expanding the nation’s capacity to welcome even more travelers and enhancing its tourism infrastructure.

Officials used FITUR 2026 to emphasize that the Dominican Republic’s tourism strategy is evolving. Beyond traditional resort travel, the country is promoting emerging regions such as Pedernales as sustainable development destinations, blending nature, community opportunity, and investment potential.

Partnerships aimed at enhancing air connectivity were also underscored, including renewed commitments from major carriers, ensuring easier access for visitors from key markets around the world.

The participation also included strategic interactions with travel professionals, alliances with regional European markets, and cultural showcases that broadened the narrative of Dominican tourism beyond leisure into experiences that connect with diverse traveler interests.

As FITUR 2026 closed its doors in Madrid, the Dominican Republic’s participation stood out not just for the scale of agreements reached but for the depth of its message: a nation ready to lead, innovate, and share its rich culture with the world. The strong economic impact and strategic alliances formed reaffirm the country’s role as a key player in international tourism a position that promises even greater influence in the years ahead.

Medias Hermanas

The Dominican Comedy That’s Winning Hearts in U.S. Theaters”

The Dominican comedy “Medias Hermanas” has become one of the biggest Caribbean film successes of 2025–2026, bringing laughter, heart, and cultural identity to audiences across borders.

After dominating the box office in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, the film opened in theaters across key cities in the United States, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, starting January 30, 2026.

Produced by Caribbean Films and directed by Yoel Morales, Medias Hermanas is a vibrant remake of a successful Peruvian film, reimagined with a deeply Dominican spirit. The story blends humor and emotional depth as it follows two women who discover they are half-sisters in the most unexpected way: at their father’s wake. Forced into a shared journey at a beach house over New Year’s, their clash of personalities ignites both comic chaos and genuine reconciliation. Starring Nashla Bogaert as Victoria and Ramcelis de Jesús as Yoli, the film also features standout performances from Frank Perozo, La Perversa, MikeToks and Irvin Alberti, whose characters bring authenticity and comic energy to the screen.

Medias Hermanas has resonated with audiences of all ages, topping box office charts in the Dominican Republic for weeks and attracting thousands to theaters regionally.

PREMIERES SDQ-STI

In an exclusive Gente Cool Magazine interview, Nashla Bogaert shared her reflections on the role and the film’s message:

“Victoria is a beautifully chaotic character, someone who tries to control everything but finds out, in the most hilarious and painful ways, that life doesn’t unfold on your terms. What drew me to this role was that vulnerability beneath her defenses. Working with Ramcelis was a gift, our dynamic became the heartbeat of the film. I hope audiences not only laugh, but also feel the courage it takes to let go, forgive, and build connections where you least expect them.”

Bogaert also emphasized the film’s deeper resonance: “This story isn’t just about family ties; it’s about understanding the pieces we inherit not just the material ones, but the emotional legacies that shape us. If viewers can see a bit of themselves in Victoria or Yoli, then we’ve truly done our job.”

The expected U.S. release, supported by Spanglish Movies and the Instituto de los Dominicanos en el Exterior (INDEX), positions Medias Hermanas a cultural bridge that speaks to Dominican communities abroad while appealing to wider Latino audiences through subtitled screenings and universal themes.
