Staying Clean

Starting the Conversation with GRACE, The Movie by Frances McGarry, Ph.D.

[ inspiring ] After celebrating ten years of being clean from heroin addiction, actor/ screenwriter/producer Marisa Vitali created GRACE, a movie that centers on one woman’s first year of recovery. “Janice” finds herself back at home, poor, waitressing at the local diner in a custody battle for her daughter. Faced with the truth of the wreckage of her past, she must cope with a series of events that transpire without going back to using drugs. Drug use and addiction continue to plague our civilization, particularly the lives of our youth. The scope of Marisa’s vision is to use the film as a teaching tool to inspire hope because “art is healing”. With its emphasis on recovery, GRACE “starts the conversation between addicts and addicts; nonaddicts and non-addicts.” To get an inside peek at that collaborative process, Marisa and Alysia Reiner sat down with me to share some of their behind-the-scenes stories: • How did your paths cross and why did each of you commit to working with each other? M: I spent about a year honing my script and workshopping it here in NYC at The Indies Lab. I felt I was at a place where I had done all the rewrites I could possibly do. I asked Alysia if she would have a read and let me know any thoughts or additional notes she might have. I have always valued Alysia’s professional opinion and her shared experience immensely. Her generosity of spirit responded with an emphatic, “YES!” and off my script went to Alysia’s inbox, while I patiently waited for her response. If I’m not mistaken, her response was something to the extent of: “Love it! Count me in! When are we

shooting it?” At that moment, my heart skipped a beat. OMG! WOW! I guess I’m making a movie and Alysia Reiner has just been cast. A: I was so happy to collaborate with Marisa on this project because my film Speed Greiving (www.speedgreiving. org) was made for similar reasons-to help people heal and not feel so alone. It is now used as a grief counseling tool at hospices, hospitals, and all the cancersupportcommunity.org/

clubhouses world wide. • Why here? Why now? M: The film was shot at Tim’s Shipwreck Diner in Northport, Long Island where I worked my first year clean. At the time, having just celebrated 10 years clean, Alysia gave me that little nudge to jump off the cliff. Ten years was symbolic for me, I felt that it was a coming of full circle to do it at that time. A: I am so proud of Marisa, her recovery

beautyblog sun-kissed and radiant all year long I love the luminance and bronzed glow that can be created with the right cosmetics. Bronzer is a make-up accessory! To get a natural, healthy glow, be sure to use the correct shade and a formula that allows for flawless application.

Apply a liquid or cream bronzer with a foundation brush. A brush will give you even coverage and avoid streaking. Work bronzer into your brush. Gently pat the product into your skin. Highlight the cheekbones with a little on the nose, forehead and jaw line. Liquid body bronzers are great for an all-over body glow. For dry skin, blend a little body moisturizer with your bronzer before you apply. Enjoy your “Miami glow” and sport your sun-kissed look all year long! Affirming your elegance…because it matters. n Bonnie Hamer creativebeautysolutions.com

If you use a liquid foundation, it is best to use a bronzing powder. Powder can set your foundation and help eliminate unwanted shine. When choosing a bronzing powder, make sure it is a “buildable” formula that blends well and layers exquisitely. Select a shade that enhances your skin tone and does not make you look too dark or orange. My bronzer of choice is a powder made for women of all skin types and skin tones. No guesswork required. I recommend your formula consist of skin conditioners and antioxidants to soothe and heal your skin as well as look great. Apply with a kabuki or flat top powder brush. Lightly sweep on the areas where the sun lands on your face. Applying bronzer on these facial features gives you the sun-kissed look you desire. 8

Fall’s Fearless Hair This year, we’ve seen celebrities taking the plunge and sporting hair styles that are fun and outof-the-box. Whether it is cutting a blunt bang or going for a pixie cut (just look at Beyonce) there is no doubt that this is the year to create your own signature style with hair that’s fearless! If you haven’t tried something daring and new yet it’s not too late. You’ll have heads turning before you know it and everyone asking, “Who’s that girl?”

Thinking about cutting your hair but not ready for a pixie cut? Try a collarbone-grazing bob with diffused ends to give a grown-out feel while still maintaining a strong shape. First, prep hair with your favorite style prep and wrap-dry your hair. Then blow-dry from the bottom forward while wrapping and smoothing the hair around your head with a brush. When dry, add volume underneath: spray with a style prep on under sections and rough dry. If you’ve never learned to wrapdry, now is the time. Start with your favorite style-prep and spray volumizing tonic on your roots. Clip up the top sections and blow-dry forward from the bottom. Use the shape of your head to bend your hair, pulling and smoothing with a medium brush for more bend, a large brush for less. Try an unstructured raw look by clipping hair to the top of your head and working up from the nape. Blow dry 1 to 2-inch sections with a round brush while forming rolls, 10

through hair with glints of golden copper. A backcombed crown, rounded fringe and alternating color placements create a look with structure, softness and just the right pops of color.

Be a Color Chameleon

Light up brown hair with harvesttone highlights like russet red and cornsilk beige to contrast with rich, brunette lowlights. Pure and simple tones keep the look natural, while filling brown hair with dimension. The beauty and symmetry of one-length haircuts are amplified by a rich, russet gloss and a basic wrap-dry to emphasize the hair’s natural fall. This simply perfect look radiates bold sophistication.

Want to add a wild streak to your highlights? (But, not too wild?) Ask for Aveda’s new Winter Peach for your next highlighting or touchup service. The finishing toner boosts blonde with rose and peach dimensions and washes out in two weeks. Brunette hair doesn’t have to lack drama. Try some sunlit auburn tones threaded with deep copper

BEAUTYBLOG

hello BOB! The other day, I had a client ask me why bobs are so popular. I said, it’s because they’re easy and look good whether you’re in jeans or a knock-out dress. There are many types of short or medium length bobs. The medium cut falls just below the chin, but does not go beyond the collarbone. If it reaches your shoulders, then it would be called a long bob. One of the many advantages of having a medium bob would be the added volume and width to a long-shaped face. Mature women look younger, because of the volume and energy it gives to your hair. You can add bangs, curls or waves, and it looks great in every color. A bob can also be inverted or reversed, meaning the sides are at equal lengths, but the back is shorter. You can determine how long or short you want it in the back. The asymmetrical bob has one side longer than the other, and usually the side you part over is the longer one. Bobs are very sexy and makes a strong, feminine statement. Bobs are also very easy to maintain because the grow-out looks great all the way through. If you aren’t sure what length is right for you, why not enjoy all of them? Start out long and cut it shoreter little by little…I guarantee you will love them all! n Grazia Monda Cooney and Colleen White | csihairsalon.com 12

How many years in a row have you been excited to pull out a new outfit for Fall only to end up choosing the same outfit you’ve worn so many times before? A common mistake most women make is hanging on to a wardrobe that is uninspiring and downright boring. After all, getting dressed is something to look forward to every day, and Fall is the perfect time to put together an awesome wardrobe. Add pieces to your wardrobe that you’ll love to wear. Here are just a few outfit ideas that will freshen up your look, and be great additions to your closet.

Skater Skirt

Maxi Skirt with Graphic T-Shirt A maxi skirt is the perfect piece to wear when you want to look chic and still feel comfortable. Pairing it with a cool graphic or plain baggy t-shirt makes it look a lot more casual. Depending on the weather, strappy sandals are perfect for your feet, but once it gets cold, throw on your favorite pair of combat boots for a bulkier look. High-Waisted Shorts with Sweater Mixing clothing from different seasons always helps to spice up an outfit. Wear a pair of high-waisted shorts with a light, comfy sweater. Wear this with sandals, low boots, or even a great pair of sneakers depending on your mood! 14

gemmagazineli.com

Maxi Skirt

Palazzo Pants

Pleated Skater Skirts Skater skirts are the hottest thing right now. They can be worn higher up with a crop top or cropped sweater, and great studded flats. Skater skirts come in a bunch of different colors and prints. A cool graphic tee will dress down this awesome look and give some edgeif that’s more your style. Maxi Dresses with Cardigan If you hear “maxi dress” and think it’s way too fancy, think again! A long dress doesn’t always have to be worn with heels. You can even throw your favorite cardigan over to make it more cozy when walking around town.

High-Waisted Shorts

Palazzo Pants with Tight or Loose Top This season, palazzo pants have become the new maxi skirt. These loose, flowy pants are super trendy right now, and can be worn for any occasion. Edgy-Preppy Look (high-waisted shorts with tights, plaid blazer, beanie) Slip on a pair of sheer tights and throw a pair of denim high-waisted shorts over them, instead of the typical skirt. On top, a plain tee or tank with a great plaid blazer will totally complete the style. You can even throw on a fun beanie in a navy, black, or grey shade for extra pop.

How Exercise Helps Keep Us YOUNG! Are you interested in acquiring any of the following: heart disease, diabetes, stroke, memory loss, depression, anxiety, brittle bones, flab, or muscle weakness? If not, read on. The medicine field is increasingly advising us to exercise more to help ward off disease and premature aging. The two most critical elements of aging are the ability to keep moving and thinking the way you want to.

Making an effort to maintain your strength is crucial for keeping your muscles young and strong. Physical activity is the best antidote known for aging. Maintaining your physical function is KEY to feeling and looking your best. Exercise not only keeps your muscles strong, but your bones dense as well. The more you strength train, the more your muscles and bones will grow.

As we age, we start to lose muscle mass. Research has shown that at about the age of forty we start to lose 1%+ of muscle mass per year. Along with the muscle mass, we also lose our strength. Think about your parents and how much less they can do now in comparison to ten years ago. Carrying the groceries in or taking out the trash may even be too strenuous for them. Instead of retirement being a time in their lives where they can enjoy a quality life, they are just trying to get through their day in the most pain-free way possible. The question is, how can we make this better for everyone? The answer is simple: exercise, specifically strength and cardio-vascular activity!

Just as important as strong muscles and bones is our cognitive function. Exercise keeps the mind young by lowering stress and anxiety. It keeps the blood flowing to your brain thus energizing your mind. An active lifestyle will also help you sleep better at night, which will in turn help you think more clearly throughout the day.

Exercise gives us an overall sense of well being. It not only makes us look and feel better, but makes us think better too. It is the best tool known to mankind to keep us youthful in mind, body and spirit. Wwhat are you waiting for? Why not start today?

CHIA-mazing! Ch…ch…ch…chia! When I was a kid, I loved Chia Pets! Chia Pets are terracotta figures that come with seed packets that you mix with water and spread on a clay figure. After a short time, the seeds sprout, and resemble hair or fur. Not only is this a fun and novelty item, but those little seeds are a “chia-mazing” source of nutrition! So what’s the scoop on chia? Chia seeds (Salvia Hispanica) have been around far longer than their fuzzy houseplant status. There is evidence of their existence dating from the 16th century. The chia plant that the seeds grow from is actually in the mint family, native to Mexico and grown in many other countries. The tiny chia seeds are a mighty source of vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, and the healthy fatty acids Omega-3 & Omega-6. They are also very high in antioxidants, which help us fight off disease, keep our cells healthy, and slow the aging process. 18

gemmagazineli.com

Another fascinating thing about chia seeds is that they can absorb 9 times their weight in water, and get puffy and gelatin-like when soaked in liquid. That’s the reason they help fill you up and make a good thickening agent in cooked foods, and make an awesome, yummylicious, tapioca-like pudding. Chia seeds come in whole or ground form. As far as any seeds go, I prefer whole seeds over pre-ground, so I will either grind the dry seeds in a coffee grinder, or soak them. Both methods help release all the fabulous benefits and make them easier to digest. Anything pre-ground can lose some of its nutritional value in the

grinding process. My philosophy is “health on your terms”, so if ground is more convenient, go for it. Better to have great nutrient-dense food in some form, than not at all. Though chia seeds can be expensive, the good news is that you don’t need much; one tablespoon is plenty. Put the seeds in a smoothie as a great way to start the day, or in a glass of iced tea or juice before a meal. The fiber will help fill you up. The seeds themselves have no taste, so they will take on the taste of whatever you put them into. Add them to your favorite baked goods recipes, in meals, or in these recipes for Vegetarian Chili and Chocolate Chia Pudding! n Tami Racaniello 631-793-1945 Health EmPOWERment Coach

millionaire matchmaker

patti STANGER Interview and article by Rosemarie Kluepfel Patti Stanger is the founder and CEO of Millionaire’s Club International Inc., a professional matchmaking service for millionaires. However, Patti is best known as the star and television producer of her own Bravo TV show, Millionaire Matchmaker. “People think that the show’s mixer is my business but actually it only makes up 10% of the company.” “I also do business consulting everyday. I do branding for clients, matchmaking, mixers, and weddings.” “Most people do it privately, one at a time”, Patti explained. Behind the scene is where the true work of matchmaking is done. Patti grew up in the affluent town of Short Hills New Jersey, a popular commuter town of NYC but her childhood was far from picture perfect. “I was adopted, my mother was married three times, my father was an alcoholic and they made money and lost money so, keeping up with the Jones, and life in Short Hills was not easy,” Patti stated. Patti was introduced to the idea of match making at a young age, as both her grandmother and mother were matchmakers. “My grandmother fixed up my mother for her first and second marriage, and from there it parlayed into doing it for free for the rabbi and then the whole neighborhood.” explained Patti. It has her own struggle with abandonment issues because she had been adopted that led Patti to search for her own perfect love. She felt she was never good enough. “The key to the kingdom of matchmaking was this whole world where I wanted to understand how men ticked. I wanted to understand why they pick who they pick.” “It fell into my lap when I ended up becoming the director of marketing at Great Expectations, an international match making company.” Patti left Great Expectations when the management refused to take the business on line after her warnings of the growing trend. After several years in Florida, some personal and business setbacks, led her to seek a change. Patti, who holds a degree in theatre from the University of Miami, had wanted to become a film writer so 22

she settled in California. It was there that she became reacquainted with some in the matchmaking industry. Patti felt most of the matchmakers did not truly care about their clients and instead were only interested in the money. She knew if “one client got married, he would tell his friends and that’s the best advertising”. What started as a part time business grew as one satisfied client led to referrals and the business expanded. “Everyone told me I would fail in my first year of business.” “Even my parents were shocked. My mother knew I could be a matchmaker but to go to the millionaire market was no easy feat.” “I was determined not to have to chase the average guy for payments”, Patti said. “I did the research where the millionaires were and worked to make it my signature brand.” However, Patti was careful and saved 6 months of salary before she quit her day job. “I had no cushion. If I was going to make it I had to make it on my own.” She resisted opening up an office in Beverly Hills and instead “met clients out in public otherwise I took a staff member or a friend for protection”. “I never took a loan and instead reinvested money back into the business, taking ads out from the profits”.

Patti explained to be a true matchmaker you need to care about the results. “You have to be part therapist, part friend, part sister, part mother, part Madame because you have to listen to their sex life too”. “Your matchmaker should be involved in your process.” Patti believes the traditional roles and expectations are still important, and while the old standard has changed and ”women more and more are the bread winners, they still seek to marry up monetarily and men feel emasculated if the woman is more successful.” Patti also warned, “There are a lot of people who are miserable with money. If you are a happy person you will get a happy person but most people mess up the match because they are unhappy by nature.” Although criticized for her honest and tough love approach, it has been highly effective for Patti. She stated, “You are always going to be seen as a bitch if you are a smart and strong woman.” “Barbara Streisand, Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, are all known as tough”. “These women have built empires. If a man did it, they wouldn’t think twice.” “Listen to your gut and don’t pay attention to the naysayers.” “Listen to constructive criticism… don’t be abrasive, and

practice your pitch and how you deliver it.” Follow your intuition and do what you think is right. Patti explains that confidence is the attribute that gives a woman the wow factor both personally or professionally when she enters a room. “I know who I am and you can’t take that away from me.” They deserve that job, that guy, but most women don’t know that about themselves.” “I’m worth more whether it’s a guy, a job...” Patti had an idea for a television show that was 13 years in the making. “Valentine’s Day comes every year and no one is doing Love”. “I had to sell my idea over and over until finally all the pieces came together with Bravo.” Bravo saw a sizzle reel in which Patti was interviewed as a millionaire who ran a successful career working out of her kitchen. From there, her idea was developed into the Millionaire Matchmaker, now in its 7th season. “Reality shows are here to stay and cranking the airways, yet they are not recognized enough by the Emmys. The world has changed, we want to see people overcome adversity. Anyone can be famous overnight. Everyone is special in his own way and has a story to tell”.

adrienne esposito Executive Director, Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE)

Adrienne Esposito, shown on far right.

Environmentalist Turned Activist To Protect Long Island The Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) began in 1985 as a grass roots movement in Adrienne Esposito’s Amityville living room. At the time, Adrienne and a handful of other environmentalists saw the need for a Long Island organization to work to protect the aquifers, our primary source of drinking water on Long Island. CCE’s first issue was the highly controversial and forward thinking proposal of Article 7 of the Suffolk County Health code, which would limit the use and storage of large quantities of toxic waste from over the deep water recharge areas of the

aquifer system in Suffolk County. The proposal was met with much debate, so the CCE team testified at hearings, organized the public to sign petitions, wrote letters to elected officials, and became actively engaged until the proposal was eventually adopted. Quickly, the CCE realized to be effective, they would need to a have a voice and presence in Albany, and that their influence would need to extend beyond Long Island’s borders to both sides of the Sound. Today, the CCE has 6 offices in both New York and Connecticut. With 80,000 members, it continues to

be an organization of the working class from diverse communities throughout New York State. It is not just a policy organization, but a lobbyist group who looks to research the scientific literature to determine what safe guards are needed to protect our environment and public heath. “Good science, and good common sense, should yield good policy,” Adrienne stated. As Director of the CCE, Adrienne Esposito’s greatest victory was the defeat of the Broadwater proposal. Truly a David and Goliath battle, as the CCE fought what seemed the unlimited resources of TransCanada and the Royal Dutch Shell Corporation who wanted to build a liquefied natural gas terminal in the Long Island Sound. The question became who truly controlled government, since 95% of the public was opposed to the terminal. The CEO of the Royal Dutch Shell was even flown in to face Adrienne in an hour-long televised debate. The heated battle spanned four years and 3 governors, but in the end public outcry overcame corporate profits. Congressman Israel, Senator Gillibrand, Maureen Murphy and Adrienne at a Long Island Sound event.

24

gemmagazineli.com

While Adrienne acknowledges much progress has been made in her 28 years at the CCE, more is needed. “On Long Island, our aquifer continues to remain polluted and our coastal waters and bays are still degrading. They are dying from too much nitrogen from sewage, causing a reduction in our fish and shellfish population,” Adrienne stated. “People’s actions have great power in transforming how we live.” She encourages us to increase recycling, stop using plastic grocery bags, replace antiquated power plants with offshore wind farms, carpool and more. “There are little things that Long Islanders can do to help protect our environment and save money.” All these little changes have a cumulative effect. For years, the CCE has raised its concerns over our sewer treatment facilities, protecting our wetlands and preserving our natural areas as a buffer, as coastal development had gone on unchecked for many years. During Tropical Storm Sandy, the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant completely failed, discharging 2.2 billion gallons of raw or partially raw sewage into the bay. When asked about Long Island’s readiness for another storm, Adrienne warned, “We are not prepared for the next storm, because rebuilding without transforming is not recovering.” In every campaign Adrienne embarked on, she was told she would fight a good fight, but would not win. Each time she worked to prove them wrong. “People always under estimate women, even in today’s society. Let the negative commentary fuel your fire, not douse it. I never thought of myself as an activist, nor an environmentalist, but as a naturalist, someone who loved nature.” She had not been an outspoken person, yet the more she became involved in the battle of environmental issues, the more she changed and evolved. Today, Adrienne continues to work with the same passion, intensity and resilience, using dialogue and research to impact policy-not only for Long Island, but for all of New York State. Adrienne Esposito remains the voice of the public in the ear of the lawmakers, insisting that the protection of public health continues to be paramount above corporate bottom lines. n Article and Interview by Rosemarie Kluepfel

Heaven is synonymous with harmony. The key to creating a harmonious environment in your home is scale, proportion, balance, and flow. Combine these elements with a little imagination and fun to create your heaven at home. Vertical and Horizontal Lines Vertical lines create height while horizontal lines can make the room appear shorter. For example, if the furnishings in the living room are about 3 feet in height, even though the ceiling is 9 feet high, the space will feel short. The tops of the pieces form a long horizontal line and cut the tallness of the room. To create balance and break up the horizontal line, you can add a tall vertical piece such as a TV armoire. Even the vertical lines of the curtains will offset the short feeling. Foreground vs. Background As we enter a room, the furniture and accessories should not be screaming out for our immediate

26

gemmagazineli.com

attention. For balance and flow, allow certain elements to recede into the background. For instance, in the corner of the room, the mirror with its ornate red painted frame can take center stage, while the ottoman can be upholstered in a silver and white striped fabric to remain quietly in the corner. Shapes Rooms furnished with square and rectangular pieces of furniture will feel harsh. To add softness and balance, replace a square end table with an oval one. In contrast, a room filled with curved pieces may not feel balanced. So we can substitute the round coffee table for a rectangular one.

Textures and Patterns Solid-colored fabrics may give a feeling of flatness to the room. Textures and patterns give depth and dimension. If you do not like patterns in the room, use velvet or chenille instead. Scales and Sizes Small spaces with petite furniture give the illusion of a smaller room. For spaciousness and proportion, incorporate bigger pieces of furniture. Keep in mind you need enough room to move around. Or, use large patterns on small furnishings to give a feeling of expansiveness. n Evelyn Chin | Evelyn Chin Design echindesign@gmail.com

Short Sale Forgiveness

Rosemarie Kluepfel NYS Licensed Mortgage Specialist NMLS #40311 RosemarieK@Fairwaymc.com

The collapse of the real estate bubble has left many home owners under water (owing more than their home is worth). Due to a downward economy, high unemployment and investment losses, many homeowners experienced foreclosures, Deed-in-Lieu’s, and Short Sales. A Short Sale is the voluntary sale of a home where as the lender or lenders, in cases where there is more than one mortgage, agrees to accept repayment of the mortgage as settled for less than what is owed. Legitimate hardship and the inability to repay by the borrower usually play a critical role in determining whether a lender will accept a Short Sale scenario. In these cases, the prospective homeowners may need to also negotiate with the lender for the sale price of the home, as the current home owner is unable to satisfy the existing liens. Undergoing a Short Sale does not mean you have to write off home ownership forever. In some circumstances, after a waiting period, larger down payment and restored credit and income, one can obtain a mortgage again. According to Tracy Becker, president of the North Shore Advisory, a credit education & restoration company, “Short Sales may be as damaging to your credit as a foreclosure unless the lender waives the mortgage deficiency balance; the difference between what the borrower owed and what the lender received from the proceeds of the sale.” You should also be prepared to provide documentation to prove extenuating circumstances, attributed to the hardship that led to the need for the Short Sale such as the loss of a job or incurred medical expenses for you or an immediate member of your family. For many, the American Dream is still homeownership. Enduring a financial hardship may not always be avoidable but having a Short Sale in your past doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t own a home again. Consult with an experienced, knowledgeable, licensed mortgage specialist to determine if you can indeed dream again. Small-Space Decorating Small-space decorating can be a challenge, but with careful planning you can make the most of your SPACELESSNESS. While space may be limited, style knows no bounds. Here are a few tips to help free up precious inches and make even small spaces seem expansive. Make a list of everything you need the room to do-think function, function, function. Take advantage of every inch with furniture that serves more than one purpose. Select an ottoman that doubles as a coffee table or side tables that have space for storage-multi-task! For dining tables, look for one that has fold-down sides or that can be moved against the wall when fewer seats are needed-it could even be used for a desk, if necessary. • In place of a sofa, opt for a loveseat. Choose one with narrower arms and a slightly more modest profile. • Use color to visually expand space; cool colors tend to recede, making a space feel larger. Choose a light “clean” color as opposed to a “muddy”, muted warm tone. For walls, white isn’t always the best bet. It works only in some instances; better to add some personality with color from accessories. • Keep window treatments simple, using the same type within a visible area. Hang window treatments high and wide to increase the size of the window opening. 28

gemmagazineli.com

• Don’t overdo accessories. Fewer larger accessories will work better than many smaller ones. Small-space decorating needn’t be frustrating. Careful planning can create an aesthetically pleasing and workable small space. n Barbara Quitoni | Creatively Transformed creativelytransformed.com

AUTUMN OUTDOORS – Fun Without The Bugs! As a landscape designer and builder, I speak to many homeowners each month. Many of them share with me that they are frustrated by how short their backyard season seems. After investing lots of money on pools, patios, outdoor kitchens and the like, the summer seems gone too quickly. In days past, the patio, BBQ and perhaps the pool were generally enjoyed from Memorial Day through Labor Day, essentially just for 3 short months. Good news! The contemporary homeowner doesn’t need to be as limited any longer. Considering the amount of money that may have been spent on pools, water features, plantings, patios, outdoor kitchens and countless other amenities, this is indeed a cause for celebration. With only a few additions or modifications, your outdoor seasonal enjoyment can be more than doubled! This creates the potential to have fun outdoors beginning in late April and continuing until nearly Thanksgiving.

Fire pits are on most ‘wish lists’ these days and create a wonderful spot to gather on chilly evenings with friends. They can be simple wood burning chimineas, or gasfired built-in pits. Either way, toast up some dark chocolate s’mores to nibble with red wine, cognac or hot buttered rum for a very grown-up, cozy evening.

Heat your swimming pool. Solar, gas and electrical systems are all available and allow the pool season to extend for 6 months or longer! Contain the heat in your water with covers designed just for that purpose.

Add a spa for four seasons of enjoyment. Few indulgences can rival the sheer joy of slipping into 104 degrees of swirling, soothing water, while watching snowflakes fall all around you!

Regardless of what you choose to build, put on a sweater, gather with great people, and enjoy the crisp outdoors of Autumn. And the best part…it’s insect-free! n Mary Rosenvinge | gardenroomslandscapes.com

GREENalternatives Spilled soy sauce on your vinyl flooring? No problem! After wiping up what you can, mix equal parts of vinegar or lemon juice with cold water and spray directly on the stain. Insert cloves into the cut side of a lemon or lime half and place anywhere outside where mosquitoes and other flying pests may gather. This combo smells great to us, but acts as a bug repellent. This little tip might be farfetched, but many in the South swear it works. Fill a clear sandwich bag halfway up with water, add four pennies and seal. Tape to the inside of your open doorway or anywhere flies might be bugging you. There are many theories about why this works, but for some reason, this combination scares the flies away. HEALTH & WELLNESS

HSA, FSA, CDHP, HDHP oH my! With the end of the year approaching, it’s time for providers and patients alike to familiarize themselves with some new healthcare acronyms. Not long ago, patients paid a deductible ($100 annually) and coinsurance (20% of the bill). Then, copayments ($20 per visit or $5 per prescription) were introduced. Today we’ve got a confusing array of medical payment arrangements, sometimes referred to as Consumer Directed Health Plans (CDHP). These plans provide some control over how healthcare dollars are spent. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) asks patients to guess THIS year how much to put aside for healthcare expenses NEXT year. Not always easy to guess how much you’ll need! Think you’re healthy and only want insurance coverage for emergencies? High Deductible Health Plans (deductibles from $500 to $5,000) may be right for you. All healthcare costs are paid by the patient until the deductible is met. Providers who treat these patients need to be aware of these plans and may

want to consider them self-pay. What does this have to do with the holiday season? Patients and providers alike should have a specific strategy in place. Think about: ∙ Funds remaining in your HSA/FSA? Will they carry over to next year? Can you spend those dollars without losing them? ∙ Met your high deductible? If yes, are there any services you can have done this calendar year? If no, can you postpone services until next year when it applies towards your deductible? ∙ Reached a benefit limit (for example, dental services)? Can you wait until the new annual limit is applicable? The bottom line is that consumers are asking for more control, and they’ve got it! Like any other financial opportunity, you’ve got to understand it and use it wisely. n Susan M. Montana sue@habaneroinc.com 631-244-5661 | habaneroinc.com

Is Your Pet Overweight?

Slim Down Tips For Dogs and Cats Obesity has become a major problem our pets face today. According to a recent study by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 52.5 percent of dogs and 58.3 percent of cats are overweight or obese. That equates to approximately 80 million U.S. dogs and cats which are at increased risk for weightrelated disorders such as diabetes, osteoarthritis, hypertension and many forms of cancers. As your pet’s health and wellness advocate, you need to take action to help your pet achieve and maintain a healthy weight. How do you do this? Be aware. Pay attention to your pet’s body shape. If you run your hands over your dog or cat’s sides and can’t feel his ribs, there’s a good chance he may be overweight. Many pet owners dismiss their pets’ “fluffiness” as cute or they rationalize with comments like “Food makes him so happy… what will a couple of extra pounds hurt?” A couple of extra pounds can hurt…a lot. Talk with your veterinarian if you think your pet might be a little-or a lot-on the heavy side. Make an appointment with your veterinarian to discuss your pet’s weight and to put together a plan. Getting your pet down to his ideal 34

gemmagazineli.com

healthy weight will impact his health across the board. Feed your pet a healthy diet. Does your dog need to be on a reduced calorie food? Perhaps, it depends on the dog and his weight loss needs. Plenty of dogs can lose weight effectively on regular food with controlled portions. Some dogs benefit from a specific weight control formula like Halo’s new Healthy Weight Grain-Free recipes for dogs or cats. Either way, a healthy diet, one that’s free from excess sugar, salt, preservatives and dense fillers, is key. Watch the treats as they are frequent culprits in pet weight gain, and one of the biggest barriers to weight loss. Treat calories need to be counted in your pet’s overall daily caloric intake. Many treats pack a ton of calories into a small bite, and sneaking your pet “treats” of human food can also be detrimental to his weight. Instead, treat your pet with natural, low

calorie treats, and keep count. Make sure to include the calories in his daily allotment. Only 10% or less of daily caloric intake should come from treats. Help your pet get more exercise. Both dogs and cats benefit from daily exercise whether they’re on a weight loss or maintenance plan or not. It’s pretty easy to find ways to exercise your dog by regular walks/runs and playtime, but how do you exercise a cat? You might be surprised that it’s easier than you think. Designated daily playtime is a great start. Both store-bought and homemade toys can get your cat moving-running, jumping and playing. Keep trying different types of toys and games until you find something your cat can’t resist. With a little planning and effort, this weight loss endeavor with your pet might be easier than you think. You may be amazed at how much healthier and livelier your pet seems once they start slimming down!

Dogs love to be entertained with a tasty chew treat. In many pet stores, you can find a variety of natural and synthetic varieties, from knotted or bone-shaped rawhide, to animal parts like ears or knuckles, to assorted straight or spiral sticks in a wide range of sizes. All of these are designed to occupy our pets, exercise their jaws and stimulate their senses. If you look a little closer when selecting chew treats, you will find a growing edible variety designed to promote dental health and, in some cases, provide nutritional benefits. What a great idea! Our pets can get their “chew on” while gently scraping plaque off their teeth and ingesting beneficial ingredients to help their immune system, freshen breath, promote a shiny coat and naturally calm anxiety. Halo offers Spot’s Chews, natural and healthy edible dental treats in a variety of flavors and appropriately sized for toy, small and medium-sized dogs. Made with whole grains, nutrient dense chia and assorted beneficial fruits, these heart-shaped chews are highly digestible, low fat and satisfying. Unlike animal part chews that may have a strong smell, all Spot’s Chews have pleasing aromas identified by their names: Minty Fresh, Yummy Pumpkin or the newest addition: Nutty Banana, offering a natural antioxidant blast from ingredients like pomegranate. All are formulated free of wheat gluten, corn or soy. When feeding any edible chew, keep in mind that your pet is ingesting additional calories, so adjust his food intake accordingly to keep him at a healthy weight. Follow feeding instructions, monitor chewing and always have fresh drinking water available. n Bettie Hamilton a Northport resident, is the VP of Marketing & Product Development for Halo, Purely for Pets. halopets.com

INSPIRATION&empowerment

Do You Inspire Others? What Makes a Person Inspirational? Paula Klee Parish Social & Community Psychology and Master Life Coach womenonthemoveli.com

Is there someone you look up to? Do you think everyone looks up to someone? What is it that makes one person stand out among others? There are qualities to model-as in a mentor relationship. Someone who is admired as inspirational doesn’t have to be rich or famous. Perhaps your mother, a teacher, or even the weird guy who seems to be happy and cheerful all the time, can be an example.

There are no specific steps to take or a course on becoming an inspiration to others. Being an inspiration is something that comes without deliberate effort. However, if this is something you are looking to do to help someone, I have a few suggestions that will help you to inspire someone who needs a little boost. • Do kind things that people wouldn’t normally think of doing: Whatever it is, it must be done silently and with ease. Do not complain-act like it’s not a big deal. Showing compassion and selflessness is something that is becoming rarer and rarer in this selfish age. Show this kind of behavior and people will see a softer kinder side of you that they will become drawn to and admire. • Seek to understand-Listen and Observe: Be more willing to actually help others and take action on their behalf, not just for yourself. If people seem like they are in need of help or guidance in anything, go for it-slowly at first to be sure you are not over-stepping your bounds. People love others who are willing to help them, and who don’t hold back looking for recognition. • Be accepting: Never discriminate against anyone. Remember the expression- “Walk a mile in my shoes.” Being accepting doesn’t mean you cannot speak your mind, but speak honestly and with forethought. Be willing and ready to accept the lifestyles, choices, and decisions of others even if you find it to be silly or ill-advised. After all, it is their lives, not yours. • Take the blame: Depending on your personal characteristics, this can be extremely difficult, but it earns you millions of inspiration “brownie” points-I call it “taking it home.” When there is a questionable situation or something where you are both at fault, or even when you feel you were not at fault at all, revert the blame onto yourself. This is, in my opinion, truly admirable. It also tends to soften the hearts of others and automatically raises you to a higher level on the totem pole. Let me qualify-I am not talking about anything illegal. I am talking about 36

everyday things that cause misunderstandings. The bigger person always takes the high road. • Take risks and, never regret them: Bravery is something that many people admire, as they wish they had the fortitude to take on challenges that test their own risk tolerance. When you demonstrate bravery, people will feel your courage and self-belief. Almost all human beings want these qualities. They will be drawn to you because they believe that you will be able to extend these traits onto them-lead by example, and those that follow will learn to lead. It is amazing what cultivating an environment of positive self-belief can create. • Sacrifice: Be ready to sacrifice things for others. Give up the bed by the window or the top bunk for somebody else. Give your best sweater to your sister, or pearls to your friend to keep, not borrow. When you give up “things” that you love for others to enjoy, the recipient immediately feels a sense of trust and admiration towards the giver. In turn, they usually see their selfish side and will want to look for you for guidance and advice at some point. Remember to keep some general guidelines: If you get the drift that someone does not want your help or guidance, then back off-do not force it. Persistence will alienate people and make you appear clingy and controlling. If they truly need you, they will come back. These refer to everyday situations. Different situations require different tactics as in the military. However being kind and caring are characteristics that are admired by all of humanity. Being an inspiration can make you vulnerable and a target for vile and manipulative people. If you come across one of these unfortunate people you have two choices. You can turn the tables and manipulate them back and give them a taste of their own medicine, or you can continue to act kind and considerate despite the risk of getting burnt. But remember, taking risks strengthens your profile as an inspiration to others. Lead by example and others will follow.

Cartwheel: Social Savings Tool

Helps CA$H Registers Go Cha-ching Do you like saving money? Are you an avid Facebook® user? Do you like shopping at Target? If you answered yes to all three of these questions then, the Cartwheel App is for you. The Cartwheel App allows you to browse, select and share savings with your friends through Facebook®. “We believe this savings platform fits with how many of our guests like to shop today,” said Eddie Baeb of the Target Corporation. There may be 700 different offers at any given time. Simply browse by category or collections from your smart phone or computer, and then add the offer to your Cartwheel. You may also view your friends’ Cartwheel savings through Facebook®. The offers you select will travel with you, as long as you have your smart phone. When you reach the register, present the mobile coupon generated by Cartwheel (by clicking on the “my Cartwheel” tab in the App) and watch the savings print

onto your receipt. When using your computer, remember to print out the barcode to present to the cashier at the checkout. Currently, Cartwheel only works in-store locations in the United States. While talking savings, Cartwheel adds another conversation piece to the mix by allowing you to earn badges such as “Shopping Buddy,” “Social Saver,” “Super Scanner,” “Big Saver,” and “Uber Saver,” based on your activity. Concerned about privacy and want to add an item discretely to your shopping list? Not to worry, I recently purchased some boxer briefs for a family member, and Cartwheel allowed me to add them privately. If I wanted to share this offer with my Facebook® friends, I could click the share button located beneath the offer, and it would post my savings discovery to Facebook®. It’s that simple.

Why did you start this type of business? I found fitness after quitting my office job of 20 years. I started working out, and felt fabulous. I wanted to share this feeling with others, so I started taking courses to get certified in Group Fitness, Pilates, Yoga, Kickboxing, Silver Sneakers, Aquatics, Reiki and more! I started teaching classes for the Town of Hempstead about 7 years ago. The women in my classes inspired me to go out and find space so they could have more classes. I couldn’t believe how great I felt, and how great the students felt. I thought this was too good to keep to myself, so I started the Be Fabulous Foundation, Inc. a non-for-profit fitness/wellness company. Our fitness classes fund free programs including Nutrition and Wellness Seminars on different health topics. We are looking to bring free fitness classes to Ronald McDonald House. We are also trying to inspire women to participate in their first 5k. One of our Board Members, Nora Hickey, is giving free training. I just love what I dohelping others feel fabulous! What was your biggest obstacle? Finding places to sublet space, and filling out the IRS paperwork. How did you overcome the obstacles? I never gave up looking for halls available in the area, then I had to hire a firm to fill out paperwork to apply for not-forprofit status. What or who helped you achieve success? My personal trainer Nora Hickey helped me fall in love with fitness. My Board Member Tina Scalise is always there to help run classes. We have now expanded to three locations. What was your biggest achievement or accomplishment? Every day is an achievement when a student comes up after class and says how much fun they had working out, or how good they feel ,or how they don’t take certain medicines anymore! Networking tips? Use Facebook, always ask for e-mail addresses, send out announcements, sales promotions etc. Love your job! Happiness in life is worth more than money can ever give you! Words of wisdom? Don’t let anyone stand in the way of your dreams. If you want it bad enough, go and get it!

Budgets Are A Girl’s Best Friend Regardless of your status in the working world, as a woman, you need to have a good understanding of the finances surrounding your life. The key to responsible personal financial management begins with a budget. To establish a budget you must know what money is coming in and going out of your household. Knowledge is power and there is no time like the present, to get in the know! Getting in the know, means not only knowing how much is paid but also to whom, when and where it is paid. Regard your budget as your new best friend, the voice of reason for responsible decision making, and a helpful hand in easing the burden of spending and paying bills. To establish your budget, write down all of your monthly bills. If you are unsure of all your expenses, sit down with your partner or significant other, and have an open and honest discussion regarding what bills are being paid each month. In order for your home to function, and your budget to positively impact your lives, you must be honest with yourselves and each other. Make sure your budget is a very specific accounting of every expense each month,

everything from coffee to beauty supplies. Next, keep a small notebook with you over the next 30 days to account for what spending you are doing on a daily basis. You may be surprised by the amount of money you are actually spending versus what you thought you were spending in just a month’s time. By keeping track of our spending habits over the course of a month, you will become more aware of where your money is going on a daily basis, and identify any areas of unnecessary spending you might be able to either curb or cut out completely. Be aware of things you want versus things you need. Everyone deserves a little luxury every once in a while, but

it is important that this is done in moderation and within your budget. When it comes to luxury desires, opt to save up for things you want and avoid impulsive purchases! After you have created a budget, make sure you revisit it every few months and during any major life changes. Monitoring and adjusting your budget will help to ensure you stay within your means and avoid excessive spending that can lead to debt. Take advantage of online budgeting and money management tools, similar to our “Budget Jewel” that offer user-friendly platforms for developing and maintaining a budget. n Leslie H. Owner and Operator, Jean Linder Organizing Professional Organizing for Homes and Offices on Long Island’s East End 631-806-4852 • jean@jeanlinderorganizing.com 3+ years in business jeanlinderorganizing.com

Why did you start this type of business? I started by consigning items of value from people, and then would sell them on E-bay. Often, when I visit their homes I saw many places stuffed to the brim. This seemed to bother them. I started the business because helping these people was a good match for my personality and skills. I also noticed that ‘getting organized’ and ‘de-cluttering’ were always on magazine covers, so I knew there was a market. I would watch “organizing” shows for fun, and just knew that replicating that was my calling. What was your biggest obstacle? I felt confident in the first few jobs I did. It took a while to feel comfortable in a leadership role when that was needed. How did you overcome the obstacle? Experience. I’ve gone through the process enough times now to know when and how to lead, and when to ease back.

What or who helped you achieve success? Success was a result of my experience, compassion, being non-judgmental,my efficiency, persistence and energy. What was your biggest achievement or accomplishment? It’s recurring: working with people who are thrilled to find things they’ve lost, and making their space neat and inviting again. Also, the donations to charity I’ve facilitated. Networking tips? Always carry your business cards, share your website and Facebook page whenever possible. Words of wisdom? As an entrepreneur, you must try all sorts of things to find what works. Learning your trade, getting new leads, and ideas on how to serve your clients best must be your new pastime in addition to working hours.

When are we 46

gemmagazineli.com

Alysia Reiner and Marisa Vitali photographed by Scott Kowalchyk with hair & make-up by Martyna Kopczynska

shooting it?” At that moment, my heart skipped a beat. OMG!

A: I am so proud of Marisa, her recovery

and courage, and so thrilled to have helped this dream come true! I know, it, in turn will help so many others. • What were some of the obstacles you had to face during the course of this project? M: As my friend and mentor, actress Karen Giordano always says: “There’s no such thing as an obstacle, only potential inspiration.” Filmmaking is a process and a journey. Everything happens the way it’s supposed to happen, which is not necessarily the way you had expected it to. I had a director for the film, a female, come on board who I was super excited to work with, then due to personal conflicts, she was unable to move forward with the film. Who was I going to hire now to direct my film? That was a decision I had to sit with…at the time I was set on a female director. My ultimate decision shifted and came down to: Who is the PERSON to tell this story? That’s when Alysia introduced me to Director Chris Ordal, who then came on board to direct GRACE. The rest is history… A: I will say, as an actress I had a blast. Brigitte is a classic foil; [she’s] such a fun, fun character to play- the classic narcissistic bitch, but as an actress you always want to make it unique and relatable and human. • What are some of the outcomes and goals of this movie? M: The short film GRACE, of course, will do the festival circuit. And then, I want to pair the film GRACE with a recovery organization to raise awareness and start the conversation of recovery, between addicts and non-addicts. I want to be able to bridge this conversation gap. Similar to what Alysia did with her film SPEED GRIEVING. A: I am so thrilled I was able to help in any way to make it happen, show her the way, the steps to production, having done it with SPEED GRIEVING. Introducing Marisa to Chris and Claudine, I’m so excited to cheer her at the premiere! • Once the film is “in the can” what happens next? M: Director Chris Ordal will be heading up the post-production, editing, color correction and sound out in Los Angeles. GRACE will be ready for our first festival submission: Sundance. Alysia Reiner is an award-winning stage, screen and television actress. She is currently shooting the role of Fig on ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, the new series by Jenji Kohan who created WEEDS, and this month shooting the film REVENGE OF THE GREEN DRAGON and GIRL IN THE BOOK, as well as having recently wrapped ARE WE OFFICIALLY DATING with Zac Effron. Marisa Vitali is an actress and audio book narrator/producer. She is currently in post-production for her film GRACE. She recently wrapped NOVEMBER LIES and her most recent narration THE RISE AND FALL OF ROCKY LOVE can be heard on Audible.com.

WINEtalk

Few wines enchant and captivate us as Champagne does. It is the wine to drink to celebrate our milestones and grand moments in life. Whether it’s a wedding, christening, birthday or anniversary, what better way is there to celebrate than with a sparkling Champagne toast. All Champagnes are sparkling wines, but not all sparkling wines are Champagne. For something to be a true Champagne, it must come from a certain region of France. The Champagne appellation is one of the most tightly controlled, and every aspect of production is strictly regulated, from the classification of vineyards, to the types of grapes grown and used. The production process for Champagne is similar to that of other wines, but it includes an additional and important step. A second fermentation is started in the bottle by adding yeast and sugars. This creates the carbon dioxide bubbles that are responsible for the pop and sparkle that are the iconic symbols of Champagne. Aged on its lees for at least 12 months, Champagne may not be released to market until it has spent a further three months in bottle and 24 months in the case of the vintage wines. From the history to the hype, due to the labor intensive methods used, and the time involved to produce, Champagne can be very expensive. If you love the bubbles but not the price tag, there are amazingly delicious sparkling wines found not only in France, but in most major wine producing regions around the world. Italy’s most popular sparkling wines are Asti from Piedmot and Prosecco from Veneto. Sparkling wine from Spain, is called Cava. Do not overlook the fantastic wineries in California that also produce outstanding sparkling wines in the true Champagne method. Grab a glass of bubbly and make any event a cause for celebration. I raise my flute in toast to Gem Magazine LI to celebrate this second anniversary edition, and all the hard work which has made this publication a success. Congratulations to you, Tanya and your staff for “nurturing the jewel” in every woman! n Lorraine Pomes WineShopAtHome.com/lorrainepomes

Sara Anne’s Business Networking Tips

steaks seafood cocktails fine wine

- A “success suit” will lead to a successful second meeting. I’d suggest a navy blue pinstripe business jacket coupled with a skirt or dress pants. Keep your hair back in a ponytail or away from your face. - Lead with your smile. Smiling can be contagious, and if it is warm and inviting, it is easy to talk to you about closing that next big deal. - Engage your prospect with a story from your travels, or a hobby. Networking events are usually held at catering halls or restaurants, so be yourself and business will casually get mentioned. - Networking events almost always have a theme. Listen to the presenters, you will learn something new every time! - Download CardMunch by LinkedIn to your iPhone or Android device. Not only will it scan your business card, it will sync the card to your LinkedIn account! - Follow up with an e-mail after the event. It will keep your prospect engaged, and keep you fresh in their minds. n Sara Fingerman Contributing Writer Gem Magazine LI, Sara@gemmagazineli.com
