the earth

B

eauty is all about the jewels of the earth this season with amethysts, jades, and rich garnets adding mystery and intrigue. Eye shadows with rich pearlized finishes bring out these earthy jewel tones. Crushed citrine is a fun favorite; it sparkles like gold dust and is perfect to bring out the glimmer in eyes. Sweep deep azurite blues, tiger-eye browns or any color that stirs your soul over the lid. Outline the eyes in a bold line that’s blended on top and bottom. If your lid color is neutral, choose a jewel tone for the liner. Have fun with it! For day, the fashion runways featured an ultra-feminine vibe to reflect the energy of the 1960’s with a clean, fresh and flirtatious look. Take a cue from the era’s optimism with effervescent pink shades and illumination petal essence along the cheekbones paired with an easy, long and loose hairstyle that embraces natural texture. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being true to oneself. Lips are a modern, reinvented red such as Aveda’s new Vanadinate lipstick, a luxurious limited-edition Nourish-mint lip color. Mineral pigments and pomegranate seed oil repair and nourish your lips. Think Amy Winehouse meets Brigitte Bardot for an air of attitude and confidence. • Adriana Vater, Spa Adriana, 631-351-1555

ow do we hear our inner voice over all the mind chatter? Meditation is a great tool that can help us hear our own inner wisdom and bring us closer to the person we want to become. Meditation can be done anywhere. Start by inhaling to the count of 5, and exhaling to the count of 5. The counting breath distracts and focuses the mind, and can be used in a repeated pattern. Try it also to help slow your heart rate from exercise. The goal of meditation is to acquire stillness, not silence. So if thoughts come up (and they will), acknowledge their presence and let them go peacefully, instead of trying to fight them off. Now repeat a positive affirmation, such as “I am confident”. Even if you’re not feeling it, keep saying it over and over, and eventually it will become true. Meditation helps us to acquire a deep acceptance of

ourselves, and helps us become more aware of our thoughts and feelings. This awareness can help move us through blocks, fears and low self-esteem. Through the practice of meditation, we will be more forgiving of ourselves, allowing us to build trust in our inner wisdom. • Tami Racaniello, It’s Time to Get Fit, 631-793-1945

Make-Up bag

Makeover

T

he air is crisp and chill, the leaves are falling and whether we’re ready or not, the holidays are fast approaching. With lots of parties and gatherings to attend, it’s the perfect time to create a new make-up look! Have you stared into your make-up bag recently and realized that you’ve been using the same products for years and are bored and ready for a change? Have you been wearing that same lipstick and doing your eye makeup the same way for so long, that there seems to be some comfort and ease in it because it works?

NEW!

It is surprising how many women say they would like to do something different with their look, but they either don’t know how or are intimidated by the endless cosmetic product choices out there: primers, concealers, highlighters, foundations, tints, minerals! It can definitely seem confusing, but a new make-up look doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. To get started, make an appointment for a lesson with a professional make-up artist. You can show the professional what make-up you have and together you can sort through what still works and what is ready to toss. Step by step, a customized look can be created for you based on the amount of make-up you like to wear and the time you have to apply it. Some women like to take less than 5 minutes in the morning and only a few products to achieve a look that is easy and updated. A professional can give you a few quick tips and help you look your best. If you are a make-up lover that likes to wear it all, learn which brushes to use for what, which colors work best for you and techniques to transform a day to evening look. A trusted professional make-up artist can also advise you on what products to splurge on. So maybe its time your “make-up bag gets a make-over” or maybe you’d simply like to learn how to better apply what you have. Whatever the reason, remember that applying make-up is a fun, easy way to express yourself! • Rosemarie Spinella, Licensed Esthetician, 631-807-8625

he Townwide Fund of Huntington, Inc. Annual 4 Mile and Fun Runs sponsored by Range Rover. This year the “Turkey Trot” falls on Thursday, November 24th, 2011. Each year a ½ mile fun run brings the youngest generations out to celebrate the morning. The 4 mile race gets bigger and bigger each year with over 1400 entrants in 2009. From walkers to top-shelf runners, everyone gets together for this great event. Sponsorships and donation opportunities are available up to November 10th. Online registration up until 8pm, November 21, Townwidefund.org.

D

o you realize that the average Thanksgiving meal calculates to between 1,500 to 4,000 calories, depending how many times you head back for seconds. So when you’ve consumed double your daily requirement of calories in one sitting, it’s easy to see how the pounds suddenly appear around that waistline. So, what can you do? Other trainers will tell you to cut your portions in half, and skip the gravy, dessert, and alcohol. But not this trainer! That doesn’t sound like much of a “holiday” to me. Here what I suggest instead: Plan a BIG Pre Holiday Workout -- And I mean BIG! You should challenge yourself to earn that meal! How about participating in a 10k turkey trot or a 90-minute spin class? Or try one of my favorites--Tabata™--named for exercise physiologist Izumi Tabata, who created this calorie burning workout consisting of intervals that include 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest repeated 8 times for a total of 4 minutes per exercise. “Intense” doesn’t adequately describe this workout as it can feel like 240 seconds of hellish burn. Exercises range from cardio, like using the elliptical machine, to lunges off of a step while doing biceps curls, burpees, push-ups, on or off a Bosu™, to squats with shoulder presses. Post Holiday--Cardio, cardio, cardio...Select an activity you love and set a daily goal to burn an extra 100 calories per workout than you normally do. Simply adding on a few extra minutes to your regular workouts will do the trick. Better yet, increase the intensity by raising the levels on the machines or adding some sprints or hills to your runs/walks so that you are burning those extra calories and getting a good sweat. So, train hard and enjoy! Happy Thanksgiving!! And remember that this advice will get you through those office and family parties in December too!

Own The Look

2 0 ’ s, 3 0 ’ s, 4 0 ’ s It is great to be in your twenties because anything goes, as you are having fun trying to find your “look”. A young woman should play with their hair style -- go extreme, long or short -- and try different colors and tones. Anything goes when you’re young and you wear your hair with confidence, like the performer, Rihanna.

The thirties is a time when women use much of their energy giving attention to their family while working at their jobs. To insure that you have time for yourself, wear an easy, stylish look that’s great for busy, active moms, like Keira Knightley’s classic bob.

By the time you are in your forties, most women have established an everyday look for their hair. Keep it simple, especially if you are a businesswoman. The forties is not a time to take chances with color. Blondes should add warm tones to their hair color to make skin look healthier, avoiding ash tones that will age you. Layering hair brings out your face and acts as an instant face-lift. Think Jennifer Aniston, or CSI Salon owner Grace Monda, as an inspiration for this look. • Grace Monda & Coleen White, CSI Hair Salon, 631-320-1554

HOW AGE AFFECTS WEIGHT LOSS

H

ave you noticed that age affects your ability to lose weight? Your metabolism slows down and makes it more difficult to conquer fat loss. Do not give up! You can make changes in your life to speed up your metabolism. Here are a few steps you can take: Exercise: This will boost your metabolism and give you more energy throughout the day. Strength training is the most beneficial. You need to turn any fat you’re holding onto into muscle. The only way you do that is strength training. If you are unfamiliar with proper techniques for strength training, hiring a personal trainer would be extremely beneficial. Diet/Eating Habits: Eating lots of fruits, vegetables and foods low in fat will keep you healthy and feeling good. Count your calories and make sure you are not

calorie loading in a day because it will eventually catch up to you. Schedule: Keeping a food and exercise log will help you access what works for you. Drink lots of water and make exercise part of your daily routine. Be aware that the less weight you have when you hit forty or above, the easier it will be for you to remain healthy. So start making good choices now! • Lauren Geldmacher, Body Design Fitness Studio, 631-423-0071

health & wellness A BRIEF HISTORY OF HAIR REMOVAL

T

he pursuit of being “hairless” has been in existence long before the days of recorded history. For most people, facial and body hair is more than just a nuisance. History shows us that hair or lack of it was important for one’s status and social position. Men and women in ancient Egypt removed all the hair from their bodies except for their eyebrows. Wigs became popular and the type of wig one wore represented one’s status in the community. Many times wigs were buried in tombs beside their owners for their transition to afterlife. Alexander the Great required that all men in his army be clean-shaven with short-cropped hair. In the Middle Ages, women plucked and shaved every hair on their forehead, eyebrows and necks. Queen Elizabeth was one of the first figures in history to make this fashion statement famous. As society’s view on hair evolved from the prim and proper Victorian Age to that of the early 1900’s and the roaring 20’s, women were exposed to a new fashion image. Shaved underarms and legs became the

creams, which caused a chemical reaction in the keratin so that the hair could be wiped away. Evidence of depilatory creams date back to 4000 BC and contained arsenic and quicklime, chemicals that were very poisonous. In the 1940’s Nair began to manufacture and sell its depilatory cream and continues to do so today. In the late 1880’s, electrolysis was developed by Dr. Charles Michael and was used to remove an ingrown eyelash from a patient. Today, of course, Dr. Michael’s method has been improved upon and modified to remove hair from all parts of the body. A probe is inserted into the hair follicle and a small amount of controlled electrical current cauterizes and destroys the hair. Today, we have state of the art laser for hair removal. It is a noninvasive light energy that eliminates hundreds of hair follicles in an instant. Treatment of large body areas is quick and effective. Laser is a great step forward in hair removal technology.

order of the day and represented ultra femininity. Shaving implements were first made out of sharpened flint stone and date back to 30,000 BC. They were so crude that they actually often removed as much skin as hair. In early 1900 Gillette introduced the disposable safety razor and mass-produced it. Then along came the depilatory

OvercOming Overwhelm You may be overwhelmed when you: a. Distract yourself by doing anything other than the task at hand b. Drink coffee and keep plugging away even though your concentration is shot c. Keep adding things to your “to do” list indiscriminately d. Procrastinate until the very last minute Do any of the above really work? If you continually find yourself overwhelmed and stressed, cranky or withdrawn, it is time to figure out a plan that will work best for you. Here’s a sampling of a few of my clients’ strategies. • Mary realizes that working out for 40 minutes helps her to reinvigorate her mind and body so she can then refocus. • Joe finds that clearly prioritizing his “to do” list and sticking to his priorities helps him avoid being overwhelmed. • Sally simply takes five minutes to deeply breathe and also uses some simple quick acupressure point exercises. • Cara sets a timer for 15 minutes and then surfs the web to stimulate her mind.

the u-lift

Exclusive before and after results published in next month’s GEM Magazine LI! Check it out!

The newest, natural innovation in cosmetic enhancement “When patients come to my office hoping to look better I listen to their concerns: they often want to avoid surgery, they have no downtime, want results that work and last, they are concerned about foreign materials being used. It is difficult to find one thing that can satisfy all of these desires. The U-lift in the right patient can do just that.”...Dr. Scott Blyer Newts and salamanders can regenerate tails, legs and even eyes. Starfish can regenerate their entire body. Do we, as humans, possess the ability to repair our own wrinkles? It appears we may. You have heard of the “Vampire Facelift”, where your own blood is centrifuged and injected into your face to treat wrinkles and enhance volume. Dr. Blyer has his own ‘spin’ on this technique which yields magnificent results. At CAMEO Surgery, Dr. Blyer’s technique is called, “The Ulift” because the secret ingredient is you (u). What does it do? A small amount of blood is removed, similar to a blood test and prepared for treatment. From the sample, platelets and fibrin in plasma are removed and prepared for injection. The injections can be used to improve fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, eyes, and forehead. It can also be add volume to the cheeks, jawline, or chin wherever it may be needed. Using state of the art painless infrared and radiofrequency technology, the growth factors within the platelets are activated and the magic begins. Where injected, they repair existing damage to skin and help grow new collagen; improving skin texture, coloring, and minimizing wrinkles. Within the platelets, alpha granules contain many growth factors that are responsible for regeneration and repair of collagen. It has been used by orthopedic surgeons and other specialists for years to heal better and quicker. By creating a super-concentrated syringe of them, and by awakening them to work in the designated area, the results have been outstanding. In people lacking volume, Dr. Blyer sometimes will add a filler with it to help assimilate new collagen growth in those tissues. How long before I see results?

You are getting your results from different avenues. There will be immediate results simply from injecting the substance under the skin. Over time the PRP (platelet rich plasma) does its magic and most will see a result at 3 weeks, older people may take up to 6 weeks. This is due to the new collagen formation from fibroblast stimulation. Lastly, from the infrared/ radiofrequency treatment, results can continue to improve over months from delayed collagen repair. How long does it last? Although there are not yet any long term studies, the results appear to last for over a year. There is no harm in repeating the treatment before that time. What is the downtime? Essentially none. You can have the procedure done and go to work the next day. Some people can have some bruising, but this can be covered with makeup. Are there any dangers associated with this technique? No, it is safe. The product is made from your own body and there is no chance of reactions or allergies. If a person has active cancer, it is not advisable to have this procedure. What are the advantages over other alternatives? The Ulift trumps fillers like Restylane®, Juvederm™, and Radiesse® because: -It comes from your own body (not foreign) -There is no chance of allergy -Results typically last longer than Restylane® -Better for superficial wrinkles-most fillers cannot be injected close to the skin surface without getting lumps and bumps -Will produce new collagen -It can be injected in thin eyelid skin without worry of discoloration or bumps which can be seen with Radiesse®, Restylane®, or Juvederm™ -Juvederm™ comes in 0.8 cc syringes, Resytlane ® in 1.0 cc syringes, and Radiesse® in 1.5 cc syringes, with the Ulift, from your own blood we can get 3-10 cc (up to 12 times the amount) Advantages of the Ulift compared to fat injections: -Can be done very comfortably without sedation -No ‘donor’ site discomfort (besides the blood draw area) -Advertisement

voiding regular checkups with your dentist can put your health, looks and pocketbook at risk! For those of you who are lucky enough to have dental insurance, it is imperative that you take full advantage of its benefits. Having an exam and cleaning twice a year will insure a healthy smile and hopefully, prevent the need for major work. Understanding your dental benefits will help you receive the best care possible. Your employer’s benefits department can help explain them to you. Many dental offices have employed an insurance coordinator to help pre-determine eligibility and benefits and file claims for patients. In general, dental insurance is a benefit offered by employers. The employer contracts with the insurance company. The dentist has nothing to do with patients’ benefits. A dentist may accept insurance (usually as partial

payment) or not. Unlike medical benefits, which require single co-pay for each visit, dental benefits are based upon the procedure. In general, preventative care such as checkups, cleanings and x-rays are covered between 80-100%. Basic care, such as a filling, is usually covered between 50-80%. Major work such as crowns and bridges are generally covered at 50% or less. Dental insurance does not carry over to the next calendar year, so if you don’t use it, you lose those benefits. Quite simply put, it will cost the patient significantly less money out-of-pocket to maintain good oral care so that major work is never required. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!” • Dr. Richard Rongo, Huntington Village Dental, 631-423-7022

Living W a t e r When Should Your Child FirSt See an orthodontiSt?

M

any parents don’t think about braces until their children are just on the cusp of adolescence. Orthodontists can spot problems with teeth alignment and jaw growth as early as age seven, long before children have their permanent teeth and corrections are more challenging. By age seven, enough permanent teeth are present for an orthodontist to evaluate the relationships between the teeth, the child’s jaw and the bite. In many cases, an early orthodontic check-up can prevent much bigger problems in the future. Some of the more apparent conditions that call for a child to have an orthodontic check up include: • Early or late loss of baby teeth • Difficulty in chewing or biting • Jaws that shift or make sounds • Mouth breathing • Thumb sucking • Teeth that meet abnormally or don’t meet at all • Teeth that appear above the gum line

All water is not created equal. Are you buying bottled water, or are you drinking from a water filter or water purifier? Did you know that your clean water might not be healthy? Discover the amazing benefits of Glacier living water, which is also referred to as alkaline, restructured, or ionized water. Ionization produces water with altered structure and characteristics that make it more supportive of excellent health and well being. 4 Reasons to drink Alkaline Antioxidant Water: 1. Increases Hydration 2. Balances Body pH 3. Increases Energy & Alertness 4. Neutralizes Free Radicals Are you drinking water that supports wellness, or water that is aging you with acid? When your cells, tissues, and tissue fluids are overly acidic, you are more likely to experience the following effects: • Tire easily and become fatigued • Find it more difficult to think clearly (brain fog) • Develop a pessimistic outlook on life • Lack the energy and vital spark to achieve your goals and aspirations • Poor health and more frequent respiratory challenges • Stiffness, swelling, aches pains and chemical sensitivities Drinking four to six glasses of alkaline water a day will help neutralize over-acidity and over time will help restore your buffering ability. Alkaline water, like vitamins C, E and betacarotene, acts as an antioxidant because of its excess supply of free electrons. • Colleen Simon, Health Hutt, 631-615-2179

CLEANSE YOUR WORLD

I

f you really stop to think about all the toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis, it is quite scary. From hair and nail salons to cleaning products and pesticides, we are exposed to toxins everywhere. These toxins steal our energy and rob us of our quality of life. They also speed up the aging process. We can try our hardest to minimize the amount of toxins we are exposed to, but to eliminate them all seems impossible. One way to approach getting rid of toxins is to begin by cleansing and detoxifying your body. You can do this by having a healthy colon, which can be be achieved by doing a series of “Colenz Hydrotherapy” sessions, also called the “safe colonic”. Another great way to release toxins is the use of Far Infrared Sauna therapy, which gets the body to sweat out 17% more toxins compared to your traditional sauna at the gym. There are other therapies that will reduce toxic stress like an ionic foot- bath; the soaking leaves you relaxed as well. Make taking care of yourself a top priority and cleanse your world to make your life healthier. • Vanessa Galati, Cleansing Concepts, 516-640-5322

Cheap S u r g e r y

I

n the current state of the economy, we have noticed an increasing trend in the interest of having cosmetic surgery abroad, also known as “medical tourism”. There are many qualified doctors overseas, but is it worth the risk? These are my 10 biggest concerns about this issue: 1. Standards of care The United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that the quality of health care in overseas facilities may not be on par with the United States, and that foreign facilities are not always subject to the same health standards and regulations. 2. Infection The largest percentage (31%) of complications from surgeries overseas was infections and infectious diseases, such as influenza and tuberculosis, which can be transmitted by mosquitoes that Americans and Europeans would not have built up a natural immunity to. 3. Other common surgical complications need intervention Other common complications reported by patients were dehiscence (where the wound opens up), contour abnormality, and hematoma (collections of blood in the site). These issues can happen or appear at any point during the healing process, not just immediately after surgery. 4. I have a post -operative surgical problem, now what? Personal medical insurance most likely will not cover a patient while out of the country. If a medical complication should arise, additional costs could be out of pocket. 5. Checks and balances The standards of care in the US are much greater than other countries. 6. FDA regulations Sometimes inferior medical devices can be used for breast implants for popular surgery as breast augmentation. This 26

gemmagazineli.com

would not be the case in the United States, where the FDA closely monitors implants. 7. Traveling after surgery One of the most popular cosmetic procedures today is the “Mommy Makeover”, a combination of a tummy tuck with breast surgery. It is a long procedure and follow up care is very important. Preventing blood clots the day of surgery and throughout the recovery period is of extreme importance, and if missed can be potentially lethal. 8. Recovery Recovering on a tropical beach is not a good option; the patient needs to stay out of the sun and out of the water as necessary to avoid scarring and infection. Being close to home with the support of family or friends is optimal. 9. Why is the surgery cheaper? There are excellent surgeons all over the world, but many are able to have lower fees because they do not provide protection for patients such as medical malpractice or hospitals without liability insurance. 10. Is the surgery actually cheaper? It is not advised to travel on a plane for at least seven days after surgery, but with the above scenario, the cost is essentially the same as the average tummy -tuck in the US. Estimated price for a simple tummy tuck Flights $1,000/person x 2 $1000-2000 Hotel $800 for 1 week $800 3 Meals x 7 days $500 Surgery cost $3000-6000 $6300-9300 The most important question and the most commonly ignored, is your health worth the risk? • Dr. Scott Blyer, Cameo Surgery, 631-232-2626

ad day? Fight the blues without blowing your diet by picking foods that boost happy brain chemicals while helping you stay slim. When you’re in a funk, your first instinct isn’t to whip up a bowl of lentil soup or pour yourself a glass of milk. But compounds in these foods may help ward off depression, fight fatigue, and reduce anxiety by increasing levels of mood-boosting brain chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine. Traditional comfort foods, like those loaded with sugar, saturated fat, alcohol, and caffeine, on the other hand, can actually amplify edginess - not to mention blow your diet. To perk up without packing on the pounds, pick one of these healthy eats next time you’re feeling down. Organic Popcorn The mood booster: Tryptophan We hear tryptophan and we immediately think turkey - and tired. Truth is, when the amino acid is consumed with carbohydrates instead of protein, it’s more effective in aiding the body’s production of serotonin, a tranquility-inducing brain chemical. A study published in the journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavia found that foods containing tryptophan, like mustard greens, pumpkin seeds and bananas, offer mood-elevating effects. Tryptophan levels are often low in people suffering from depression, although researchers are unclear as to whether the relationship is a cause or a consequence of the condition. The next time you feel down, try 3 cups of air-popped popcorn for 100 calories instead of gnawing on a drumstick. Organic Cottage Cheese The mood booster: Tyrosine Low-fat sources of protein, like egg whites and low-fat cottage cheese, are packed with tyrosine, an amino acid that aids the brain’s production of norepinephrine and dopamine, two chemicals that influence motivation and reaction time. Early studies showed that tyrosine could be used to alleviate symptoms of depression, as it is an essential building block for the mood-regulating brain chemicals norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. Enjoy half a cup for only 90 calories and stock up on 14 g of filling protein. 28

Organic Walnuts The mood booster: Alpha-linolenic acid While EPA and DHA, two omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon, tuna, and fish oil supplements, have been touted to help depression sufferers beat the blues, a new study of 55,000 women published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid in plant foods like walnuts, soybeans, and flaxseed, is the real star in alleviating depression symptoms. In the 10-year study, Harvard University researchers found that the risk of depression was lower among women who consumed more ALA, a compound previously thought to have few health benefits.

Organic Sunflower Seeds The mood booster: Selenium A Nutritional Neuroscience review of five studies on selenium and depression linked deficiencies in the mineral to poorer mood. Another study published in the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine suggests that selenium can help prevent postpartum depression. When 44 postpartum women received 100 mcg of selenium daily, they scored lower on a postnatal depression scale. While Brazil nuts offer the biggest dose of selenium - a half-ounce serving packs 272 mcg - sunflower seeds are a lower-calorie snack option. A quarter cup of roasted seeds in their shells has about 70 calories and delivers 30 percent of the daily recommended value of selenium, while a single Brazil nut packs around 30 calories. • Dr. Stephen Atkins, Atkins Wellness Solutions, 631-470-2499

She’s played a vital role in a “shop locally” initiative for Huntington businesses. Her efforts were honored by Long Island Business News when she was named one of the Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business. Adriana shares her success wherever she can. She spearheads a global effort on sustainability, speaks to students about environmental responsibility, supports the Hecksher Museum, the Vanderbilt Museum, the Susan G. Komen Foundation and many other causes. 30

Substance and Style GEM had a chance to sit down with Adriana recently to learn more about what drives her. How did you get started in the beauty industry? As a child, growing up in Columbia, one of ten children, I was always creative. I loved dolls and for as far back as I can remember I was cutting and styling my dolls’ hair, crafting styles that were distinctive and interesting. In school I explored my talents for sculpting, drawing and an all-around creativity. Although I loved art, I felt a strong need to help others. In high school I would give facials to my schoolmates and cut my friends’ hair in my mother’s basement. I always knew I wanted to work with others, but not just on a small scale. I wanted to start a business to help people look and feel good from the inside out. I was able to channel this drive to heal and nurture others into a successful business with my husband, John. I think loving what you do, and being with people who encourage you to reach for your dreams, is what has fueled my – our – success. What role did your family play in

your success? I was raised by a mother who was always very interested in health and wellness. This inspired me, and it fostered my own passion for healing others, while making them feel truly beautiful. I had always envisioned running a business in which my whole family could take part. Today I work side-by-side with John. Having the love of your life alongside you, doing what he loves, too, encourages my own creativity. Our staff is family to us as well. I think our clients feel that welcoming spirit. Where does passion fit in? Is there room for it for women today? You must make room for your passion. After beauty school I worked in various salons, but I never felt any true sense of fulfillment; consulting and connecting with clients is what I longed for. I think this is the key to success: find what drives you, do what you love. As a woman, what barriers have you come across during your professional growth? The beauty industry is very open on that front. From the standpoint of building a business on Long Island,

our passion drives our success – we are passionate about beauty, and about our community and the environment. So as far as barriers go, nothing can withstand our commitment for doing what we feel is right. What do you do at Fashion Week? Every season John and I attend Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC. For years we were behind the scenes doing hair and makeup for many of the top designers’ shows and now I’m there in an editorial capacity and John is “front-of-house” in the media risers taking photos of all the runway action. We gather intel for our clients at Spa Adriana and bring back inspiration on the next season’s trends to our creative team at the Spa, keeping an eye on new trends in fashion and beauty. How have you engaged local businesses? We believe the success of one business helps ensure the success of all businesses, and the success of the community as a whole. To that end we’ve engaged local businesses through resource sharing, cobranded events and more to encourage guests to shop locally. We need to work together as a whole to keep all of us strong. Spa Adriana recently underwent its own beauty makeover… Yes! Spa Adriana has always been an eco-conscious, “green” business. When it was first designed we employed many of the same green building techniques used by the Mayans. For the renovation we took this green consciousness even further, using low-voltage lights, recycled steel and sustainable materials. We transformed the façade to resemble an ancient Mayan temple using man-made cements as architectural stone. Our good friends Dr. Alfonso Moralas, Archeologist and Luis Eschevres, Mayan Architect and Artisan produced wonderful Mayan art replicas. What one thing do you think young women today need to know? Be fiercely true to yourself. And in that you must love yourself, honor who you are, do not let anyone stand in your way. It is a commitment to give the world the vibrance that is who you are. Do not settle for anything less! • Hillary Call, Call Communications, 917-414-9262

Spa Adriana and Ceviche Tours Building a Greener Earth One Community at a Time Indulge yourself in the MayaSpa experience of Spa Adriana, an Aveda lifestyle salon and spa that captures the exotic beauty of the ancient Mayan culture. It is truly a green business: all building materials used in the development of Spa Adriana were environmentally friendly. Spa Adriana continues the organic trend in hair- and skincare pioneered by Aveda 30 years ago by using Aveda products exclusively (all of which are plantderived). Co-founders John and Adriana Vater have evolved their commitment to the earth by establishing another eco-friendly business, Ceviche Tours (www. cevichetours.com), an ecotourism travel agency that provides sustainable ecotourism services to travelers visiting the Yucatan and Isla Mujeres, Mexico. female voice came over the loudspeaker as the plane taxied toward the runway to begin its flight to Indiana last week. “May I have your attention please?” Down the aisle came three attendants, two women, and one man with instruction cards, seat belt buckles and life vests in hand. Once positioned at their designated locations, the voice began instructing the passengers on the procedures to follow should there be an emergency.“ … In case there is a loss of cabin pressure, an oxygen mask will fall from its compartment. If you are traveling with small children or an elderly person, put your mask on first before attending to others.” These instructions were not new, but this time, they set me thinking. Why is it that women find time to take care of everything, but they have no time for themselves? Each of us is given the same 24-hours in the day, so that isn’t the reason. The answer is that it’s a mindset that we have learned. Haven’t we all been told that women are the caregivers and that it’s more important to put our needs aside for the needs of others and that it is selfish to think about ourselves first? We may not even have been aware that we were processing these ideas, but subconsciously, we accepted them and turned them into our beliefs. Yet, on the airplane they tell us to put ourselves ahead of those small children and elderly people. Why? Because the truth is we have nothing to give to others when we don’t care for ourselves first. Take a few minutes everyday to do something that recharges your battery and makes you feel good. Go for a 15-minute walk, meditate and enjoy the exquisite sound of silence or polish your toenails, laugh on the phone with a friend, or do whatever brings you joy. Let it be the first thing, not the last thing you do. It will quiet the brain chatter, reduce stress and energize you. Everything else will be easier to accomplish once you have made some time for yourself.

THE HUMAN ELEMENT Life is an ephemeral thing. This notion is an irrefutable fact when set against the vastness of time. And if life is so painfully brief, why waste time worrying about things that will fade even sooner than life itself? The sorrows of today are nothing more than the dust of tomorrow. Life is about emotion, for emotion is what makes us human, makes us whole. It should not matter how many designer clothes you have or how many dollars are in your bank account. These things are materialistic, and when the core of life slips away, what will you have if you cared only for material possessions? When you are old and worn and your grandchildren huddle at your knee, what will you tell them if your life amounted solely to brand names and dollar signs? Somewhere, along the twisting path of life, the human element can be lost, and the fact that we are human is all we really have. • Courtney Buoncore, 10th grade student Centereach High School 32

AMND ALS FUNDRAISER Eight years ago, a group of high school students witnessed their healthy, active and fun-loving teacher, David Deutsch, face a terminal diagnosis – ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The students rallied around him and another teacher in their district who had been diagnosed with the same fate ten years earlier. Their first fundraising effort was a 3 v. 3-basketball tournament that raised a remarkable $25,000. They set their sights a little higher and have now held seven gala benefits at Oheka Castle on Long Island since 2005 and have raised over $2 million for ALS research and families afflicted with the disease. The eighth annual A Midwinter Night’s Dream event will take place on January 12th, 2012. Please join the students and alumni of Northport High School as they put on a magical evening filled with entertainment, unique raffles, silent auctions, exquisite cuisine and above all, hope. making a positive lasting impression

T

hose who are capable of making lasting impressions on others, have a charisma that is most useful in the pursuit of success. Throughout life, the average person meets thousands of people and is exposed to even more ideas, concepts, and beliefs. The content of conversation, or the words used to convey a message quickly fade, but the impression remains. An impression is an effect, feeling, or image retained as a consequence of experience. However, like a footprint in the sand at a beach, impressions eventually fade away; a lasting impression is one that does not. Those who know how to, and are capable of making lasting impressions on others, have a level of influence over others that is most useful in the pursuit of success. How can you make a lasting impression? Think back to your own experiences in life and think of the impressions that others have made on you. If you carefully think about this, you will discover three key circumstances: 1. Strong emotion. The stronger the emotion, the stronger the impression. To make a lasting impression on someone, they must feel some kind of emotional connection. The anti-smoking commercials use exsmokers with holes in their throats to get the public to feel fear. Beer commercials show people having fun to make us feel good while seeing their product. Of course, your approach to getting others to feel strong emotion can certainly be less manipulative. 2. Use of imagery. People remember best in pictures, not words. For example, one of the most effective techniques for remembering numbers is to convert the numbers into words, then convert the words into mental

pictures. The more outrageous the imagery, the more memorable it becomes. 3. Differentiation. The law of contrast states that which is different or unique makes a greater impression than that which is ordinary. We notice the one light bulb that is burned out more than we notice all the light bulbs that are not. The impression is what is left over when the words and details have faded. Be creative and stand out from the crowd in a positive way. Practice leaving people with positive lasting impressions and when the time comes, they will remember you, your advice, and/or your product. Realize YOUR true potential, one goal at a time...be the architect of your life! • Paula Klee Parish Performance Solutions, Paula@paulakleeparish.com

Warning SignS of Suicide Reality TV made headlines this summer when one of its own took his own life. Unfortunately, suicide happens far too often: it is the third leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults. You can make an important difference, and perhaps save a life, by recognizing some of the warning signs: • People struggling with suicidal thoughts may say, “I want to die” or “I want to sleep and never wake up.” They may exhibit sadness, cry, take risks or silently withdraw from friends or activities. Changes in sleeping patterns or appetite, a loss of energy or a drop in grades may signal something may not be right. • Urgent warning signs include a sudden lift in mood or if a person gives away prized possessions. Listen for specific plans or access to means. • If you think someone is suicidal, ask directly. Indicate that you are worried and fear they may be considering suicide. Using the word “suicide” says you’re not afraid to talk; it may help them feel comfortable enough to confide in you. • Listen to their concerns without judgment. Let them know help is available and offer to go with them. Tell someone you trust. Get help for yourself, too. Talk to a professional, counselor or a friend, or call LICC’s confidential hotline at 516-679-1111. • Hillary Call Call Communications, 917-414-9262 34

ver feel like you’re trying to communicate but just cannot get through to your partner? We have been communicating since the beginning of time, yet in most relationships, communicating can be a challenge sometimes. We all have needs that we bring into a relationship and many times when a need is not met, we experience issues. To have all our needs met all the time is impossible. Because of this, we experience opportunities to express our issues. Too many times the way we communicate our issues brings forth bigger issues than we anticipated. How do we prevent this from occurring? Turning complaints into requests is an easy way of keeping the focus on what you would like to happen, rather than what is wrong or what is not happening. The key is in negotiating a solution that will prevent or resolve a conflict. Another tip to remember; it’s not always about you! When your partner expresses a feeling or issue, it comes from their reality and it’s authentic to them, and it’s not always about you! If we would simply accept our partner’s point of view and agree to disagree, most arguments will be stopped dead in their tracks. • Jodi Pesca, Certified Professional Life Coach, 516-848-2524

family & education above grade level

s a teacher, each day I see students who are successful and students who struggle. The students that thrive continue to seek ways to do so and those who struggle are seeking ways to help minimize their fight and maximize their knowledge. You, as a parent, know immediately which category your child falls under. With consistency and persistence, the child with weaknesses can remediate their knowledge and accentuate their strengths. Over time success becomes an expectation and this, in turn, reinforces their self-esteem and increases their chances for success. If, for your child, success comes easy, talk to their teacher about getting enrichment or gifted work. If your student is good at English, then encourage them to write stories, poems or movie reviews—perhaps a blog. If they are good at Math, have them try peer tutoring. By reinforcing your student’s strengths, it will give them the confidence to work harder on the more difficult subjects. This leads to higher self-esteem and becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy of success. Success is taking your dreams and making them reality. Success is achieving those dreams especially when you have figured out a way to overcome barriers. You wouldn’t let what you can’t do influence what you could do… would you?? ALL students are capable of success!! • Bruce Beasley, Above Grade Level, 631-804-4508

home decor Committed to Providing Exceptional Design Your home, the place where you return each day, is an opportunity to express your interests and style. At Claudia Dowling Interiors, they will integrate your personal tastes and comfort to design a home that fits your needs. Whether a whole house renovation or a one room update, size does not limit their vision or design process.

A Return to Fine Design Once you have hired the designer you feel the most comfortable with, it is time to discuss your project. Design should proceed in a logical manner. The first step for a designer is to come to the house to measure the areas, photograph the spaces and interview the clients to get a better understanding of their lifestyle. Having this information, the designer moves onto the specific room plans, alternate color and product selections. Choosing specific furniture pieces is a large and important aspect of the process. The floor plan is key to the entire project as it zeros in on

the exact location and scale of all the furniture. At this point, the preliminary design is presented to the client for discussion and approval. A very important step at this point, would be to see the choices of fabrics and color in the actual room settings. After fine-tuning all aspects of the design elements, orders are placed with the approval of the client. When the finished room is produced, the transformation is both exciting and rewarding. • Claudia Dowling Claudia Dowling Interiors, 631-421-5290

T

here is a crisp snap in the air. The leaves are just beginning to turn. Indian summer is doing her final dance, and I’m getting excited about lighting a fire and digging out that yummy chenille throw with the pom-pom trim that I had made last winter. As we look forward to warming up indoors, we need a little seasonal sprucing to set the tone for the coming months. How can we cozy up the home for the holidays without making a serious investment? What little decorating tricks can turn a space from summertime sparse to seasonally sensational? Treat your home the way you treat your own wardrobe, by layering your favorite pieces to create a warm comfortable look. Layer a smaller Persian wool area rug over that lightweight sisal. Replace those summer buds with a gorgeous bunch of eucalyptus sprigs and hydrangeas that are just turning that aubergine color. Pillow covers could be changed to zippy tangerine-orange tones or deep russets to bring in some autumnal warmth. Just as you wear different

jewelry in cooler months, use the same formula when accessorizing your home. Replace the stone washed candlesticks with beefy brass hurricanes. A few colorful coffee table books scattered about in the color way you’ve chosen can make a bold statement. As our living space changes with the season, we may want to consider new window treatments. A simple drapery treatment on a chunky walnut pole with some acorn finials might be a nice change to existing lightweight panels or overdone swags and jabots. In the bedroom, a change of bedding and a swap of that cotton Matelassé for a coverlet with texture will change the mood. Layering a woven throw at the base of the bed will surely be a warm and welcome addition too. Ahh, the fall is here...may you indulge yourself in all the possibilities that it offers. • Kim Radovich, Kim E. Courntney Interiors, 631-868-0595

f you are interested in learning the basics of scrapbooking, I suggest you take a beginner’s class at your local scrapbook store (LSS). Typically, a beginner’s class will cover the basic tools you need to create a page layout. Your LSS will also have many samples of layouts that you can browse while you are in the store. The experts in the store will help you decide what style of scrapbooking appeals to you. Your LSS will also be able to help you pick out papers and embellishments to go with your pictures. If you want to make the scrapbooking journey on your own, then I suggest the first thing that you do is to organize your photos. Based on your photos, find an event, person or place that is special to you. From those photos, pick out the best of the best and leave the rest. Now the fun starts. It’s time to go shopping and start scrapbooking! Remember to take your photos with you when you shop for paper that compliments your photos and makes then pop on the page. ASTROLOgY - nOVEMBER NOVEMBER SKY - How will the position of the planets in the sky influence this month? Mercury will go retrograde on November 24th at 20° Sagittarius and will go direct December 14th at 3° Sagittarius. It will hit the 20° Sagittarius on January 2nd 2012. This apparent backward motion is called a retrograde which occurs three times a year. When a planet is retrograde, it is closest to the earth and it is considered weak. It becomes stronger when it goes direct. That is why communication and documentation seem to become difficult. Mercury symbolizes the way we think and our ability to communicate. It is the ideas that come from our mind that rules the thinking process. It gives us direction toward our creativity and decision-making. It is useful to let go of old ideas, to bring in the new, to allow us a new perspective. Mercury moves quickly, has fleeting thoughts and wings. It rules the third house, the color green and Wednesday, the day of the week. So, make sure the “t’s” are crossed and the “i’s” are dotted before signing anything. Mercury in Sagittarius rules philosophy, religion, law and higher education. It is concerned with attitudes rather than fact. Therefore, you must pay attention to the truth. By having factual information, Mercury in Sagittarius does exactly what it thinks. So make sure you really want to know the answers when you ask the questions. SCORPIO - The planet Mars is squaring your sun. Better to use these energies successfully in taking any stand in a confrontation. Anger and irritability are frequent now. So keep that in the back of your mind when energies lead to dispute. Use this energetic time to accomplish a great deal of work rather than with circumstantial challenges. • Maryann Dellinger, Astrological, Metaphysical & Psychic Insight, 631-462-1212

TA B L E S F O R T H E H O L I D AY S Make your dining room table something beautiful with a tabletop creation of your own that your family and friends can enjoy everyday, not just on a holiday. Be creative by using your personal treasures in a whole new way. Display an ornate jewelry box, a string of “pearls”, or a fanciful teapot with fresh flowers. Collect pinecones and scatter them on your table among some seasonal potpourri. Pick up small pumpkins at the local market and use little votive candles to turn them into lights. Another fun tip to illuminate your table is to buy small LED lights from a craft store and place them in a large green head of leafy cabbage as your table’s centerpiece. ant to increase the value of your home by 15% compared to other houses on your street? Hire a landscape architect to plan, design and oversee the implementation of your ideal landscape. The first step to consider is the space you are looking to develop. Is it a space for entertaining or is it a front entry? A landscape architect will use their artistic and technical skills to help you make an analysis of the current conditions, to define your goals and appropriately plan and design the project. A landscape architect holds a bachelor’s or master’s degree in landscape architecture from an accredited university and they are licensed in all 50 states across the country. Licensure requires passing a rigorous five part state administered examination that covers design, storm water management, site engineering, horticulture, law ethics and professional practices. A good place to start in your selection process is to identify a residential landscape architect firm at Firm Finders ASLA.org. Finding the best professional for your project comes down to proper balance of design ability, cost, service and personal comfort level. • Victoria Silverman RLA, 631-262-0672

here was a time when handbags, jewelry and shoes were the hottest fashion accessories a woman could own, but times have changed. The rise in fame of heiress, Paris hilton, saw a whole new trend burst onto the scene – the “pocket pooch”. As Paris and her pup graced the pages of the tabloids, women everywhere flocked to the pet store in an effort to imitate the fashion sense of their idol. Before long, no self-respecting young woman would dare to step out without their very own pintsized Fido tucked neatly under their arm. But fashion is forever evolving – one day it’s in and the next day it’s out. While it’s easy to trade in that handbag or pair of boots for a newer model, it’s not so easy to do with a pet. Dogs and cats are living, breathing things that rely on you to take care of them. They’re not something that can be tossed aside when the novelty wears of. So before you add furry friends to your fashion repertoire think carefully and make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons, because you’re not making a commitment for a season, you’re making a commitment for the lifetime of that animal. And remember – adoption is the best option!

have seen women melt at the sight of a kitten and go head over heels for little puppies, but it isn’t often that such emotions are expressed at the sight of a LIZArD… but the times sure are a’ changing. The latest and greatest exotic pet is the Bearded Dragon! This native of Australia looks a bit intimidating at first, almost like a little dinosaur, but these cold blooded romeos can quickly steal the hearts of their owners. “Beardies” are extremely docile reptiles, full of personality and seem to enjoy their owners company as much as they do theirs. Activities such as watching TV with your “lap lizard” or coaxing your kids to do their homework by letting them hang with their “study buddy” has quickly propelled Bearded Dragons into the main stream pet world and into households across the country. Although taking them for a walk in the park will certainly attract attention, it is strictly optional, and when those cold winter days start howling, you might be glad you opted for a stay indoors pet rather than a cute furry four-legged mammal that demands so much other attention. While Cockapoos may be for individuals who like to step out of the norm from time to time, a Bearded Dragon makes an awesome, original companion. • Jungle Bob, Jungle Bob’s Reptile World, 631-737-6474

Seniors living on a limited income may also worry about the high cost of heat during the cold winter months. The federal Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as HEAP, can help those in need. If you qualify, the federal program may pay for some or all of your electricity, propane, natural gas, wood, oil, kerosene, coal or other heating fuel in your residence. C o l d W e at h e r h o m e I m p r o v e m e n t t I p With the cold weather quickly approaching, we all need to avert the high cost of heating our home—what can we do? One solution is a well insulated home. An easy way to save money is to stop drafts and prevent heat loss. This will add comfort and a few extra dollars in you pocket every month. The easiest way to stop heat loss is to have proper cap insulation, which is the insulation between the second floor ceiling and attic floor. Whether it is batt Insulation or blown in, it is a small investment that will

save you money in the long run. Most homes lose a large percentage of heat this way; it also keeps homes cooler in the summer, which puts less strain on air conditioning units and saves money in energy bills. Another way to stop drafts is to make sure that in the wall air-conditioning units have the proper exterior covers, as well as a shrink wrap on the inside, which can be purchased at any home center. In short, these few simple measures are cost effective and will pay for themselves.

automotive how to spend less on gas Keep your tank full. While you’re looking to reduce the amount of gasoline you are using, constantly running your car with the tank close to empty can wear down your fuel pump. The gasoline in the tank keeps the fuel pump cool. Take away the gas and the fuel pump runs hot and has a shorter life. If you have an older car that has accumulated dirt and rust at the bottom of the tank, keeping a full tank can help your fuel burn cleaner. Keep your car in shape. Keeping your engine properly tuned improves fuel efficiency by an average of 4 percent and repairing a major issue like a faulty oxygen sensor could improve efficiency by up to 40 percent, according the U.S. Department of Energy. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you could quickly recoup the cost of an oxygen sensor or other repair after as little as one tank of gas through improved fuel economy. Keep your tires inflated properly. Keeping your tires at the optimal level not only keeps you safer, but can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent, according to the Department of Energy. Your owner’s manual should tell you the proper psi (pounds per square inch) levels for your vehicle.

t’s Time to Harvest…But I’m Not Talking Tomatoes! Are you sitting with investments that are down in value? Do you fall into the “lost decade” when it comes to your mutual funds? There is something you can do to turn that frown upside down. It is called “Tax Harvesting”, which is weeding through your investment portfolio for losses that may yield you a tax deduction! Tax harvesting is the process of selling securities to realize capital losses that in turn can be used to offset capital gains. Here’s how it works: Realized capital losses can be used, dollar-for-dollar, to offset realized capital gains. If your losses exceed your capital gains, the next $3,000 in losses can be deducted against your ordinary income; any remaining losses can be carried forward to offset gains in the future. *Tax harvesting can help you reduce your annual tax bill and effectively deliver a better after-tax result for your portfolio. *This strategy cannot be used for “qualified” accounts such as, IRAs, 401ks etc.

y mother told me only one thing growing up that I had to be, or should I say NOT be. What my mother told me was to “never be financially dependent on a man”. She never told me to be a doctor, lawyer or a teacher. In fact, when I signed up for Accounting at Suffolk County Community College out of high school, I was afraid of getting in trouble because my mother had told me to sign up for Liberal Arts, until I figured out what I wanted. If you knew me in high school, you might’ve expected me to choose horticulture or equine studies, never accounting. Her advice has shaped all of my decisions throughout my life, including the dating days and career planning to follow. Her statement has also caused issues with men that weren’t comfortable with an independent, careerminded and financially secure woman. Of all the lessons my mother has taught me and continues to teach me, this is by far the best one. It gave me the fire and fight in my

belly to stand up and demand respect for my talent and my mind and not allow my age or gender to define me in someone else’s eyes. It’s this inspiration from my mother as I was growing up that guides me to find out about what motivates other women to be independent. Think about your mother and how she inspired you. Then ask yourself, how have you inspired your daughters or the new girl just out of college in your office? I look forward to the conversation! • Stacy Luft, CF Grow, Inc., 631- 894-4234

t this time of year, many companies plan their holiday parties. The company representative meets with the catering hall or restaurant sales director to select a venue, reserve the date and time, plan the menu, and specify seating arrangements. The facility prepares a contract for signature, which is often signed without further thought. While deposit and minimum guarantee requirements are reasonably imposed by the facility in consideration for reserving a room for the customer’s affair, other provisions may unexpectedly shift certain risks to the customer, or fail to guarantee the customer the arrangements selected. For example, a force majeure clause, which is designed to protect the facility against liability for failing to perform in the event of a blizzard, hurricane, or other act of nature, may be broadly defined to include problems that are within the facility’s reasonable control, such as heating or air conditioning system malfunctions. Moreover, some contracts not only protect the facility from liability in the event of a force majeure event, they actually permit the facility to retain payments made for services, even if the caterer has to cancel the event. Also questionable are clauses purporting to make the company representative who signs the catering contract personally liable for the company’s obligations. Other clauses of potential concern are those permitting the facility unilaterally to: raise prices if its costs rise, move the event to another room, or make menu substitutions. Talk about these concerns with your caterer before you sign a contract for services.

re you prepared if something should happen to you? Most women think they do not need life insurance, but they do. For a single woman who carries debt, life insurance can help pay that debt instead of her family having to use her hard assets. With life insurance, some may also wish to leave a legacy to help family, friends or charitable institutions. Stay at home or single mothers provide invaluable services for their family. Who would step in to perform those services if she should pass, and at what cost? Life insurance could ease the financial burden for those left behind. Even as we age, life insurance is necessary. The proceeds, which are income tax free, could provide an inheritance to your loved ones and help your family with the financial burden of final medical bills and funeral expenses. Life insurance can provide peace of mind knowing that your family will be taken care of. • Michele Martin, Allstate, 631-261-4200

o you know that your body is actually an amazing healing vehicle? Your body is gifted in self-healing and dedicated to repair any sickness, injury or damage. If you have a health problem that you do not want to recur over and over again, you’d better pay attention to good nutrition. Good nutrition will provide your body with durable long-lasting material to make the repair work last. I have the privilege to observe how people heal themselves. Joann became my client after she experienced a problem that caused her stomach pain whenever she sneezed. A CAT scan showed that there was a hole in her belly. In April of 2005, she had an umbilical hernia surgery, which included a mesh to fill up the hole. The umbilicus, or belly button, is a natural weakness in the abdominal wall where hernias commonly occur. After the surgery, she did not feel right, and she still had pain on her right side. The General Surgeon prescribed an intravenous CAT scan and the results were all negative. She proceeded to her OB/GYN and got a vaginal ultrasound and a gallbladder with results all negative. At this point, she was searching for an Internist and for some reason, she came across my name in the nutritionist list, and contacted me. I started Joann on supplements to boost her nutrition and within a week she no longer had pain. She could not believe it. She came to my weekly classes with a smile, but did not tell me the great results, until two months later. It took two months to convince her that her abdominal pain has vanished for good. Since then, her family has moved away to Queens, but she still comes back to visit me from time to time. Every time she comes, she always brings a bouquet of flowers to show her appreciation. This is a picture of her with her husband. Her husband has another healing story to share. You will find their complete stories in my book, “Healthy Eating Wholesome Living”. All these fascinating healing stories prompted me to publish my book to announce to the world that the human body is an amazing healing vehicle. From Joann’s story, we learned not to overlook the power of nutrition and nutrition education. You too can help your body heal.

hanksgiving will soon be upon us. I know we love a bargain and traditionally many wine merchants have great specials the weeks before the holiday. Just don’t wait too long because the day before Thanksgiving is the busiest day in a wine retailers year! Finding the right wine to match all the tastes and complexities of a Thanksgiving can be a daunting task. I’m going to give you the lowdown on the one red wine that will pair best with your Thanksgiving meal. The wine is PINOT NOIR. This wine has subtle undertones of earthiness that are supported by lovely plummy and cherry notes. This is a light bodied wine that will pair well with turkey (both light and dark meat) and mashed potatoes. Red wine is good for you. At Long Island’s own Stonybrook University (in a study of 2291 people over 4 years) they found that moderate use of red wine cuts the risk

he latest news about chocolate is that it is good for you. There is evidence that chocolate offers a number of health benefits that may be good for your heart. Dark chocolate has antioxidants, the same ones found in red wine and green tea, which are found to be beneficial to your overall health. You only need about one and one-half ounces of dark chocolate per day. The natural chemicals found in chocolate include xanthine, which is similar to caffeine. Other compounds like theobromine and phenylethylamine can stimulate your central nervous system and relax the bronchi of the lungs and your blood vessels. You’ll only find small amounts of these chemicals in chocolate, but it is enough of a reason to feel good about indulging in a luscious treat every day. Remember that the quality of chocolate makes a difference, so treat yourself to the best tasting, homemade, fresh chocolate that you can find and realize that life can’t get any better than chocolate! • Joanne Kois

of colon cancer by 45%! However if red wine just isn’t your thing, another favorite Thanksgiving wine is Riesling. This wine has an apple and honey flavor profile and good balancing acidity that aces sweet potatoes, turkey and herb stuffing. If you want to bring a little adventure to the table, try a white wine called VIOGNIER. Pronounced: (vee-oh-NYAY): A new wine is a good point of conversation. Viognier is a dry white wine with peach & apricot flavor with a lingering finish; an awesome match to green bean casserole. Try to find La Linda Viognier from Argentina (or ask for it). W

e all love the guilt free cup of cappuccino or latte. Most of us don’t think twice in refusing real sugar. Instead, we reach for artificial sweeteners. Satisfying sweetness without the offending calories, why not? New research

suggests that the body is not so easily fooled, and that sugar substitutes hold no key to weight loss. This may possibly explain why, despite a plethora of low-calorie foods and drinks, Americans are heavier than ever. In universities across the country, multiple studies on the effects of sugar substitutes have demonstrated in rats and rabbits that there is still weight gain with sugar substitutes. The likelihood is as high as 41% that one can become overweight substituting chemicals for sugar in your diet. This is not only bad news for our waistline, but for our overall health: • Some sugar substitutes have been linked to potential cancer risks • Negative effects on the liver, kidneys, and other organs • Stimulating cravings • Gastrointestinal problems • Developmental problems in children and fetuses • Headaches Additionally, people often complain about bloating and distention. So before opening your next diet soda, buying “lite” yogurt or sugar free ice cream, think about the potential ramifications. I carry in my bag the old fashion packs of brown sugar. Whenever I crave a little sweetness in my coffee or tea, I know I am not putting by health in jeopardy by adding the “real” stuff. r. Mehmet Oz, talk show host and noted surgeon, is well known for giving important health advice. Last December, during a “Good Morning America” interview, Dr. Oz offered some simple-to-follow tips to those interested in keeping slim during the holidays.

Relax This Holiday Season! The holidays are approaching and stress levels are rising. As busy as we are in our daily lives, we still need to make time for shopping, wrapping, decorating, entertaining and attending parties. With shorter days and longer to-do lists, it’s inevitable that stress levels go up. At times it’s difficult to stay close to the essence of the holiday, because we are overwhelmed and tend to experience more stress than holiday cheer. Wouldn’t it be nice to be stress free and embrace the holidays? Try these holiday de-stressing tips and hopefully you’ll enjoy your new celebratory mood this year. Simplify: constantly remind yourself that you are making it more complicated because you want it a certain way, not because your family and friends expect it. Re-evaluate family traditions: if making seven different fish dishes is too much, start a new tradition. Do less: less is more. Kids appreciate their gifts more if there are fewer gifts and everyone enjoys meals that are simple and delicious. Delegate: enlist support from family and friends. The holidays mean more when you connect and share with your loved ones. Ask for their help with cooking, wrapping and decorating. Recharge your batteries: define what relaxation means to you; take a bath, go to the gym, do yoga, etc. Make time for recharging your batteries every day. Lights: turn on the lights, light candles or go for a brisk walk in the sun. Light has a dramatic effect on mood. Laugh: watch a funny movie with the family, play a board game with the kids or tell funny family stories. Make time for fun. Breathe: when you feel stressed, remind yourself why it’s important to feel relaxed and breathe. Inhale deeply through your nose for 7-8 seconds, hold for 4 seconds and then exhale for 7-8 seconds. Embrace the holiday season, relax and enjoy!

Here a few of Dr. Oz’s suggestions: 1) Try to keep track of everything you eat in a food diary. Dr. Oz says that 50% of us gain two pounds from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. So it’s good to keep a diary just to keep yourself in check and also to get a good idea of where in your diet you may need to cut back if you notice that you are gaining weight. 2) Think about eating healthy snacks before you go to the holiday parties. Dr. Oz recommends a handful of nuts and low fat cheese to curb your appetite before you go because they’re both healthy and satisfying. 3) Dr. Oz recommends weighing yourself regularly during the holidays to check if you are maintaining a healthy weight. 4) Watch what you drink, recommends Dr. Oz. A holiday glass of eggnog contains a hefty 450 calories, so you may just want to limit your intake of the eggnog or skip it all together. If you drink alcohol at parties, stick with the “light” beers or wine spritzers and think about adding a splash of lemon or cranberry to enhance color and taste. 5) Finally, if you find yourself eating a little more than usual at holiday time, Dr. Oz recommends exercising more vigorously the next day to burn off the extra calories. • Lydia Yvette, Greenlawn

Pasta with Broccoli Rabe and Bolognese Sauce recipe courtesy of weightwatchers.com Course: main meals PointsPlus速 Value: 9 Servings: 6 Preparation Time: 20 min Cooking Time: 20 min Level of Difficulty: Easy Sauteed ground beef is flavored with fennel, garlic, pepper and fire-roasted tomatoes. Tossed with broccoli rabe and pasta, it makes a terrific, hearty main meal. Ingredients 1/8 tsp table salt, for cooking pasta 2 tsp olive oil 1 cup(s) (chopped) onion(s), chopped 1 Tbsp minced garlic 3/4 pound(s) uncooked lean ground beef (with 7% fat) 2 1/2 tsp fennel seed 28 oz canned crushed tomatoes, fire-roasted recommended 1/4 tsp table salt 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes 1/2 tsp dried oregano 12 oz uncooked whole-wheat pasta, penne rigate suggested 1 pound(s) broccoli rabe, ends trimmed, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces Instructions Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Meanwhile, to make sauce, heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic; cook, stirring frequently, until onion is translucent, about 6 minutes. Add beef and fennel seeds to skillet; cook until browned, breaking up meat with a wooden spoon, about 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, salt, red pepper flakes and oregano; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. While sauce simmers, add pasta to boiling water and cook according to package instructions, adding broccoli rabe to pasta water 5 minutes before pasta will be done; cook until pasta and broccoli rabe are tender. Drain pasta and broccoli rabe; return to pot. Add sauce; toss to mix and coat. Yields about 1 1/2 cups per serving. Notes This recipe is also great with lean ground turkey instead of beef. Not a broccoli rabe fan? Use regular broccoli instead.

travel destination Mexico’s Sailfish: A S p o r t f i S h i n g A d v e n t u r e From the beginning of December ‘till late May, sailfish and other big-game species feed in great numbers off the sandy shores of the Yucatan Peninsula. This makes the area near Cancun and especially Isla Mujeres, Mexico a mecca for sportfishing enthusiasts. Isla Mujeres is listed in Sport Fishing Magazine as one of the world’s top 10 locations for sailfish, with a particular event being unique to the area. Atlantic sailfish come to the area in the thousands during the winter months chasing swarms of sardines to feed upon. This makes catch-and-release fishing, which allows sportfishers to enjoy the hunt and catch of these fish then release them back into the wild, an amazing thrill. In Isla Mujeres, anglers generally catch a dozen or more sailfish per boat in a single day of fishing. Swimming with Sailfish Ceviche Tours has started another type of charter where clients can swim with the sailfish as they feed on the sardine swarms. This can be done as part of the day of fishing, or as a special charter just to swim with the sailfish. Imagine being surrounded by tens of thousands of sardines as they whish by you, being chased by huge, majestic sailfish, dolphins and other game fish. It’s truly an unforgettable experience. photo copyright John S. Vater • www.CevicheTours.com, info@cevichetours.com

girls night out v i ta e o f h u n t i n g t o n

W

hen the girls get together, we want to celebrate life, and the place to do that is at Vitae in Huntington. Vitae in Latin means “life”, and from the moment you enter the newly transformed restaurant you feel like you’re living the good life. The elegant restaurant feels warm upon entry with subdued lighting, metallic tones and distinctive art to entertain the eye. The onyx bar is a lively place to meet, as the welcoming staff is ready to mix you one of their specialty martinis like the Pearisian Night, with pear nectar and Chambord or the Vitae Martini made with vodka, orange liqueur, and passion fruit. Girls can get excited to try Vitae’s signature cocktails, like the Strawberry Basil Crush or PomeBellini. There is also a lovely selection of wines by the glass to enjoy while sampling offerings from the Bar Bites menu: artisanal cheeses and charcuterie and marinated olives. It is fun to indulge in the braised short rib meatball “lollipops” or some sweet Thai chili-glazed calamari and seaweed salad. The bar vibe is sexy, as is the sangria, so named, topped prettily with fresh fruit. Gals can pick on the decedent “Dirty Chips”, or white truffle frites, to get ready for the night ahead.

Every night is a good night to come by Vitae for drinks or dinner. Beginning at 7PM, ladies (and gentlemen too!) can enjoy a complimentary plate of hors d-oeuvres with the purchase of a glass of wine or cocktail. Ladies love the Happy Hour with half-price cocktails served Monday through Friday 4-7PM. Vitae’s Thursday night is Ladies Night, as select cocktails and martinis are specially priced, all night, as a deejay gets the real party started at 9PM. Sometimes girls just want to dine, and the dining room at Vitae is warmly inviting. Sit cozily on burgundy leather banquettes and enjoy a classic menu of continental cuisine starting with the pan-seared scallops with parsnip puree or mussels Vitae with a hint of saffron; then let the feast continue on with a perfectly cooked filet mignon, complimented by garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed baby spinach or asparagus risotto with exotic mushrooms. Gals will always make room for dessert—cheesecake or a luscious banana split —for sharing, of course, like life and a good night out at Vitae. good eats brasserie cassis

“French food is too rich for me”, so it has been said my many a health-conscious diner, but at Brasserie Cassis guests will experience many healthful choices as they taste the freshness and simplicity of the foods of the French countryside. The dishes are creative, lighter versions of traditional French favorites, like colorful tuna Nicoise salad, which is accompanied by greens and beans and red ripe tomatoes, mushroom-filled omelets or crepes, or roasted chicken served with tender haricots verts. You can be sure to discover “good eats” here, as the menu abounds with bright, flavorful choices. Brasserie Cassis and brings a warm touch of Gallic charm and superb French food to the Plainview Center, at 387 South Oyster Bay Road. Its ambience and décor are reminders of the bistros of the Parisian Left Bank with ornate ceiling moldings and large antique mirrors. The stage is further set with stunning globe chandeliers, vintage posters, a zinc bar top, and comfortable cherry-colored leather banquets. Come in and enjoy classics like Moules Marinieres, a white wine and garlic broth over a steaming pot

of mussels, Jarret d’Agneau braised lamb shanks served with wild mushroom risotto, onions turnips and baby carrots, or grilled salmon over hearty green lentils for a taste of their signature dishes. The special du jour, or daily specials, such as Coq au Vin, chicken simmered in red wine reduction or Bouillabaisse, a light and lovely mixed seafood stew served over potatoes and vegetables, are classic bistro fare offered to keep the Francophiles coming back for more. The staff provides friendly service and is very knowledgeable in every aspect of food and wine selections, including French digestifs like pernod, pastis and absinthe, an anise-flavored spirit derived from herbs. Dessert can be decadent, but oh, so worth the calories, especially the profiteroles with chocolate sauce, apple tarte tatin and crème brulee. When you come to Brasserie Cassis, savor the authentic food, delight in the wine and feel good to know that you are experiencing a bit of the joie de vivre, the joy of living that the French are truly famous for.
