from tanya & rosemarie “Any man can be a Father but it takes someone special to be a dad.” -- Anne Geddes The month of June invokes memories of summer vacations, barbeques, and of course Father’s Day. For some, fathers live nearby, others hundreds of miles apart, for too many; in the twinkle of the stars, the echo of a familiar song. Often there may be no title “father” or “dad” but a strong shoulder in the shadows, a cheer from the stands, thumbs up at the recital. Whether you call him “coach”, “teacher”, “neighbor”, “uncle”, “brother” or “friend”; these men had an influence on your life. They may have instilled some pride, perseverance, stubbornness or motivation. Our childhood influences our actions and thoughts into adulthood. We can dwell on the negative or learn from them. We can take the good for granted or be grateful each day. When presented with controversy, do you see the glass as half full or half empty? The choice is yours and yours alone. Surround yourself with people who appreciate your efforts, instead of pointing out your flaws. Learn from the past, but look to the future! Be Inspired or Inspire!

how did she get that look? I have some product recommendations for tinted moisturizers which are available at my favorite beauty retailer, Sephora. Note, some Sephora’s do not carry all lines so be sure to call ahead to see if they carry the line you’re looking for.

sun-kissed simply

by Matthew Ambrosio As we travel into the festive days of summer, we begin to shed more than just our clothes. Countless women opt out of wearing their makeup during the summer months for reasons like overly shiny skin, the heat, transferring onto clothes, melting, sweating, and swimming. One more important reason for a bare face is that the skin tones deepen as we soak in the sun rendering your foundation color too light. For those who have this dilemma there is a solution and it is called a tinted moisturizer or as I refer to it, “vacation makeup”. Tinted moisturizers are a very sheer texture that does not provide coverage but simply evens out skin tone to provide a natural and healthy glow. Using a tint reduces steps and can replace numerous products in your current skincare or makeup regime. When shopping for a tinted moisturizer or any makeup, you want to follow specific guidelines that will lead you to a makeup that is healthy for your skin. Look for product lines that are free of oils, parabens and fragrances. In addition, all complexion products should be hypo-allergenic and non-comedogenic, meaning they do not clog or irritate. You can also uncover animal cruelty-free, vegan and gluten free lines as well. We are heading into a healthy makeup age where we want treatment in our color. Many lines are now offering cosmetics that are considered “healthy makeup”, where it is not just free of certain ingredients, but also has treatment benefits built in to improve skin while you wear it. All you need to do is ask and you shall receive. This is our face we are talking about here! One caveat: tints do not provide moderate to full coverage, so you can always pair with a concealer or foundation for a formal fuller look. • Matthew Ambrosio - Beauty Educator and Makeup Executive beautybless.com, matthew@beautybless.com

beauty and the beach by Adriana Vater

Sun damage can wreak havoc on hair and skin. The sun’s rays are a harsh oxidizer that makes hair brittle and dry, and can lead to skin hyperpigmentation (sun spots and beauty marks), wrinkles, advanced aging and an increased risk of skin cancer. Don’t forget your lips! Burnt lips are no fun, and they dry out your pout. People spend a lot of money for hair and skin services. Ensure your investment with the proper products – those infused with a high SPF protection and UV filters. If you do sunburn, Aveda’s Intensive Hydrating Masque calms and hydrates dry skin with aloe, kelp and calming rosewater. Applying SPF doesn’t have to mean an extra step in your routine. Many moisturizers and even liquid cover-ups now include SPF protection. Choose a light, creamy (non-greasy) formula. Re-apply every two hours, and of course re-apply after being in the water or intense exercise. A skin-firming toning agent will also lock-in moisture. This is a must-have for walking on the beach, etc. as it is a barrier to sun dehydration. For hair, June highlights should be more subtle than the shade you’re ultimately going for. The summer sun will lighten your hair naturally, so starting off with a slightly darker tone ensures you will not end up with over-lightened, damaged locks. • Adriana Vater - Spa Adriana Salon & Spa 631-351-1555 spaadriana.com

hair today gone tomorrow by Rosemarie Spinella Summer is finally here. Sleeves are coming off, shorts are coming on and its time to show some smooth, “fuzz free” skin. Waxing is a very convenient, cost effective and quick method of removing unwanted body hair. Waxing removes hair directly from the root and lasts longer than other methods such as depilatory creams and shaving, which simply break the hair off at the surface of the skin. Although it’s not a permanent hair removal method, the hair that grows back (typically in 3-6 weeks) is softer and finer. As an added bonus, waxing is also exfoliating to the skin by removing dead skin cells which reveal softer, smoother skin. There are a few waxing no-no’s to be aware of. Avoid waxing if you are using/taking Retin A or tetracycline medication, which will make skin prone to peeling or breaking. Also avoid if you’ve had microdermabrasion or a facial peel within a week or so. There are also some other medications or health conditions that may cause heightened sensitivity so always be sure to check with your esthetician before getting waxed. To prevent the (sometimes inevitable) ingrown hair that may pop up, try

exfoliating the area the third day after waxing, then follow 2-3 times a week. This will keep follicles clear and reduce the chances of pores being blocked. With so many varieties and types of waxes out there, even the most sensitive skin types can enjoy waxing. Soft wax is the most typically used formula and is applied to the skin and removed with a strip. Hard wax is a great choice for super-sensitive skin types and delicate areas. It is applied thick, and as it hardens the wax adheres to hair and not the skin. As a result, it is gentler and less painful when removed. Pre and post treatment of the skin being waxed is important in keeping you safe and healthy. Proper hygiene is an absolute must, so also be sure that there is a “no double-dipping” policy. That being said…..summer will be “hair today, gone tomorrow” so enjoy it. Happy Waxing!! • Rosemarie Spinella - Certified Make-up Artist LaPiele Boutique Spa, 631-807-8625

ombre

what’s all the buzz about?

by Grazia Cooney and Colleen White It’s been awhile since a new look has come out that people are so fascinated with. This is exactly what Ombre has done. I’m here to tell you all about the buzz. Ombre is a fancy word for a hair coloring technique where the color goes darker at the root and fades into lighter and brighter highlights on the mid shaft to the end. Take note though, it shouldn’t look like your roots have grown out. This technique really appeals to me as a natural brunette. I’ve always wanted to go blonde, but even as a professional, it would still look very hard on me. Ombre lets me have the option of wearing a deeper blonde color without looking too contrived. Since there is still depth and darkness around the face, brunettes will not look washed out. It costs more than normal highlights because of the time spent, but the benefit is the low level of maintenance that comes with it. This version of highlights would only need to be touched up maybe twice a year depending on your personal preference. The great thing about Ombre is that you can go as crazy as you want or as subtle and natural as you want. If you’re ready to rock a Nicki Minaj, go for it! Or you can go as natural and bold of the likes of Jessica Biel, Drew Barrymore or Sarah Jessica Parker. As a hairdresser, we love when new techniques come in and we get to have the fun of letting people feel good about a new look. It’s great! Try it, take your time, get used to it. If you’ve been a blonde for years, do it a little at a time putting darker hair back in. That’s what’s great about Ombre, it all comes down to what you like. Enjoy and have a great summer! • Grazia Cooney and Colleen White - CSI Salon & Spa 631-320-1554, csihairsalon.com

renew, replenish and reward yourself by Patricia McManus Why not pamper yourself this summer? As a woman and mother, you’re always putting your family first. Now’s the time to reward yourself. How about an updated hairstyle that will turn heads with a burst of color? It’s very important to stay current, though. Age is not the enemy, being out of style is the error that many women make by holding on to their outdated look. For a youthful appearance I suggest a Keratin treatment or glaze that fills in the cuticle of the hair, resulting in a natural shine and a healthy glow. Your hairstyle can be classic with a trendy feel. In this lovely season, why not allow yourself to bloom like 10

the plants in your garden? How about treating yourself to a makeover? The biggest source of inspiration for summer is to lighten up! A wispy cut creates an aura of beauty by shedding your overgrown tresses, and highlights will enable you to have a hue of sun. Getting your hair done can be better than therapy! Treat yourself by calling for an appointment today! • Patricia McManus - patmystudio.com 631-543-0106, patmystudio@optonline.net

Italian Jewelry Designer

MaRco BicEgo by Sara Fingerman On May 12th 2012, Saks Fifth Avenue Huntington welcomed Italian Jewelry Designer, Marco Bicego for an exclusive brunch and “meet and greet”. Bicego was full of energy, kindness and pride as his fans marveled in the beauty of his elegant pieces of jewelry. I personally tried on an 18-karat gold multi-colored Sapphire Station necklace and automatically fell in love, since it felt and looked wonderful. Here are excerpts from my exclusive interview with Marco Bicego: “I’ve been working with jewelry since a young age, spending summers each year at my father’s goldsmithing factory where I would watch the artisans at work and try my hand at making pieces of my own. My collection debuted in 2000 at the Vicenza Oro fair. My aim has always been to express my personal vision of life, my passions and my curiosity, through jewelry design.” “My jewelry tends to be universal and recognizable, yet it is always discreet and can be worn on many occasions and by women all over the world. However, I do feel there is a difference in how each market wears jewelry. American women have perfected the art of layering key pieces such as necklaces and bangles. European women love my bold statement pieces and are creative in the way they wear them, such as taking a necklace and wrapping it around their wrist a couple times to 12

make a bracelet. ” “Almost all of our collections are hand crafted from 18kt yellow gold - which leaves hundreds of tiny lines on the surface and creates a tactile finish which remains practically unalterable through time. In many of my new collections, you will see a lot of use of color in sapphires and semi-precious stones. ” “All of my pieces embody what I like to what I like to call ‘everyday luxury’ - minimalist and clean-lined design that can be worn from the beach to the ballroom. Marco Bicego jewelry is timeless and can be worn on any occasion. I love a great necklace or two layered. It can transform an outfit and take it from day to night with one simple piece. I love that a long necklace can be worn a variety of different ways and can be styled based on the client who is wearing it. I always tell women to try on jewelry – there is a very emotional connection when putting a piece next to the skin. Usually, regardless of price, a consumer connects on a personal level to a piece. I would tell her to pick something she loves and can see herself wearing everyday – I believe jewelry is meant to be worn, not stored away for a special occasion. ” • Sara Fingerman - Contributing Editor sara@gemmagazineli.com, 631-672-4575

CSI salon & spa a cut above

Best friends Colleen White and Grazia (Grace) Cooney, co-owners of CSI Salon in Farmingville, opened the doors to a brand-new location this month, at 767 Horseblock Road in Farmingville. They’ve outgrown their old space with a successful business that’s truly a cut above the rest. Colleen and Grace have been inseparable for 15 years. Much of the staff has been a part of CSI since it first opened in 2008. “We’re like family,” said Grace, who notes it is that friendly atmosphere which makes CSI Salon a welcome retreat for guests. “Our regular customers have been with us for a long time. We’re very proud of that,” she said. It was Grace’s dream to open a salon of her own. “I knew Colleen was the person I wanted to share this dream with,” she said. The two have been working side-by-side throughout their careers, and opened their first salon in 2008-as a small space that accommodated just the two of them. They’ve since expanded, and now expanded again to serve their growing customer base, proving that excellence begets

success. The new salon will be “shabby chic,” with warm cherry wood throughout and lots of classy details. There are eight hair stations, just enough to accommodate their growing business but “not too big,” said Grace, who wants CSI Salon to remain “homey”. Beautiful hair is their business. Grace specializes in cuts and color, while Colleen crafts gorgeous updos for all occasions. CSI stylists expertly snip, style, color and pamper clients’ locks. They stay in tune with new trends thanks to a strong beauty education program, recently working with industry icon Paul Mitchell and professionals from Matrix to learn what’s hot for Spring/Summer 2012. “We are very fortunate to have each other as business partners,” said Colleen. “We did this on our own. As women it’s important to take chances to achieve your dreams. If you believe in yourself, you can truly do anything!” CSI Salon & Spa - 767 Horseblock Road in Farmingville 631-320-1554, csihairsalon.com

FITNESS TRENDS

stay fit! For women who are expecting, being cardio-fit is like having a biological 401k: you are investing in the future health of you and your baby. Aerobic activity will improve your endurance, nurtures a positive mental attitude, and increase the body’s level of serotonin (the “feel-good” hormones). It also prepares your heart and body for the marathon called labor. Nothing stimulates the circulation and conditions the body better.

by Bonne Marano-Marcus While there is no single aerobic workout prescription for the pregnant woman, activities that are low-impact or non-weight bearing have the best potential to be carried on throughout your entire pregnancy. These include: SwiMMing Swimming is great exercise for mommies of all levels. It’s low-impact, provides good cardiovascular benefits, and allows you to feel weightless (isn’t that awesome?) despite the extra pounds of pregnancy. It’s also a very safe form of exercise. No diving or Olympic style turns, please. walking It’s one of the best cardiovascular exercises for pregnant women. Walking keeps you fit without jarring your knees and ankles. Safe and ACOG-approved for the entire nine months of a pregnancy, it’s the one to start with if you haven’t been working out. ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) recommends 30 minutes or more of this moderate exercise on most, if not all, days of the week. Needless to say, if you’ve been walking, keep it up. If you were fairly inactive before you became pregnant, start slowly and build gradually. What about Jogging or Running? If you ran or jogged regularly before conception, there is no reason to alter your routine as long as you take some precautions. However, 14

gemmagazineli.com

pregnancy is not the time to start a running routine. I’m sorry, but pregnant or not, running can be hard on your knees and since your joints loosen during pregnancy, you’re more prone to injury. For the avid runner, no marathons or competitions, please. And if you’re not an avid runner, steer clear of this workout at least until after your baby arrives and then start slowly. CyCling and Spinning Whether outdoors in a park or indoors just imagining you’re outside in a park, bike riding is a great, time-tested workout. It gets the heart beating and tones your lower body without the stress of pounding the pavement. Since it is a non-weight bearing activity, cycling is safe to do throughout the nine months of pregnancy. However, cycling and/or spinning may become more uncomfortable (hello, hemorrhoids!) during the last tri-mester when your belly has grown and it is challenging to reach the handle bars. Pregnancy is a great time to talk to a lifestyle coach or personal trainer. Learning good nutrition skills and following a nourishing, healthy diet is imperative to providing your baby with the nutrients it needs to grow and will help insure a healthy delivery. And most importantly, a trainer will also help you get back into shape once the baby is born. • Bonne Marano-Marcus - Personal Trainer and author of “The Complete Bride’s Workout Guide”. bonnemarcus@gmail.com

the simple truth about

keeping it off by Carol Burke

You have probably been dieting since the new year. By now, you’ve probably almost reached your goal weight. That’s the easy part. Keeping it off is where the real battle begins. Did you know that 80% of dieters gain their weight back? Has that ever been you? Well, if so, let it be the last time. Here is the truth on how to keep it off, simple and uncomplicated. Remember what you did to get the weight off in the first place. For example, was it long walks and smaller portions? If so, you need to keep it up. Losing weight and keeping it off is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix. The changes you make are forever, not just a means to an end. The discipline that got you there will keep you there. Making healthier food choices and physical movement is always important. The more nutritious your food choices are, the more energy you have. More energy will help you to keep moving. The movement will help you stay trim and fit.

Your commitment to movement and healthy choices becomes your new lifestyle. This new lifestyle keeps the weight off. Really, it’s that simple. Maintaining your discipline and commitment to your lifestyle changes! • Carol Burke - Power of One Fitness Studio powerofoneny.com, 631-757-6937

summer wHAT DO yOu wEAR?

gemmagazineli.com

by Cathy Berger Summer is almost here and parties will be planned. Invariably, you’ll be invited to an event and you won’t have a clue what to wear. You don’t want to be over-dressed and you don’t want be underdressed either. Everyone wants to be in a situation-appropriate and comfortable attire. This delightful combination will positively affect your demeanor and how late you’ll stay. What’s the simple solution to getting it right? Invites to annual events are no-brainers: find out the dress code from people who’ve gone before or look up photos from past years. When that is not possible, and you’re in doubt, ASK. Go directly to the host/hostess. Your colleagues and friends who were invited may not know either. A summer party, backyard barbeque or cocktail party at someone’s home run the gamut from dressy chic to super casual, therefore they are not easy to decipher. So, ask! What clothes to have on hand? An “LBD” or lovely maxi-dress make for easy options. We are also big proponents of colored pants with a black top (a nice, deep V-neck is universally flattering) in the summer months. For men, a fresh-pressed short-sleeved shirt or a cloud-soft Henley from Tony Melillo are must-haves plus price-friendly, unlike the Kitsuné line which is magical but pricey. Unlined, unconstructed but still razor-sharp blazers stay breezy, are chic and go everywhere. Ladies, makeup is essential to every party look. It’s the icing on a cake, wrapping paper on the gift, polish on the shoe - all make the final product ever so appealing. (Cake tastes more delicious with fabulous decorating, doesn’t it?) A little mascara, some blush and lip gloss add the right finishing touches. If you find yourself at an event feeling under dressed, just straighten yourself up as best as you can. Smooth or pull back your hair. Fix your makeup. Tuck in your shirt or blouse, button your jacket or sweater. Carry yourself as if you are dressed extraordinarily. If there is still uncertainty about the event, better to err slightly overdressed than underdressed. It shows you gave the invitation respect. Plus, being in good clothes makes you feel good. A last tip: plan your shoes carefully. Let them and/or the spare pair you bring, work well for you even if the party heads outdoors (lawn? dirt? or oh my, sand?) We can’t stress enough that what you wear affects your mood and attitude, so whatever you choose, let it add to your confidence and charisma. • Cathy Berger - Fashion Societe fashionsociete.com

what makes a woman beautiful? by Lidia Szczepanowski Since the beginning of time, philosophers have struggled to find the true meaning of beauty. They all had their own distinct ideas, but in the end the only common thought which manifested itself was that beauty was indeed impossible to define. So what makes a woman beautiful? Hint: You can’t buy it, you can’t get it from someone else, and it’s not injectable. A RAdiAnt SmiLe - a genuine smile is uplifting, contagious, and it can penetrate the mind and reach the heart. A SpARkLe in heR eyeS - when a woman has the metaphorical “sparkle in her eyes”, she has the power to light up a room. It is a reflection of her inner beauty, charisma and zest for life. A Good SenSe of humoR- it invokes smiles and laughter from others, spreads pleasure, can keep things from appearing too overwhelming and it certainly brightens up the atmosphere. AppReciAtion - the ability to find beauty in everything surrounding her and feeling gratitude for all the remarkable things she has been blessed with.

pASSion - having boundless enthusiasm and using it to making a positive difference in the world. confidence - trusting oneself and having faith in one’s own abilities, talents and skills. inteLLiGence - reveals itself in a woman’s eyes and in how she walks and talks and carries herself. It is a vital element of a woman’s essence. empAthy- sharing the feelings of others and identifying with what another person is going through can elevate beauty to an even higher level. inteGRity - having a sound and moral character and ethical principles and doing the right thing for the right reason even when no one is watching. A great pair of stilettos can’t hurt either. Enhancing and developing these qualities and characteristics will make any woman feel beautiful… physically, emotionally and spiritually.

by Dr. Inna Gellerman Congratulations to the Class of 2012 as they graduate and embark on an exciting journey to success! It’s time to enter the work world and that means presenting yourself to prospective employers looking your best. Many research studies have proven beyond a doubt that attractive people are more likely to do well in interviews, get hired faster, make more sales and get more raises. A beautiful smile makes everyone more attractive! New technologies can give you a perfect smile without anyone knowing that you are wearing braces. Lingual braces are hidden behind the teeth and appear “invisible.” They are customized to match the shape of your teeth, so no one knows that you are wearing braces. SureSmile® uses sophisticated 3-D imaging, computerized treatment planning and customized shape memory archwires to reduce treatment time from conventional braces by as much as 40%. The precision engineering from this robotic system, combined with the use of high-tech wires results in increased performance and maximum control. SureSmile® offers a revolutionary treatment that minimizes the length of treatment and the number of office visits. Other options include Invisalign®, which uses invisible, removable and comfortable aligners to straighten teeth. Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are less visible than traditional metal braces. They are the favorite of older teenagers and adult patients. In today’s highly competitive job market, looks matter. Today’s orthodontic options can make a beautiful smile a reality. • Dr. Inna Gellerman - Spectacular Smiles Children & Adult Orthodontics, 631-427-8444, drgellerman.com

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

be your own medical record

information is power by Susan M. Montana

It started as a professional curiosity, but now it has become a habit, and I recommend it to everyone. Maintain your own medical record. I’ve found this helps me better understand what is going on with my own health and it also makes it easier to communicate amongst the various healthcare practitioners you may see over the years. For example, I recently went for a DEXA scan for bone density. It’s something that is recommended for women, and especially for women with bone issues. My GYN ordered the test, and when I went to have it done, I asked the technician for a copy of the scan and she printed it out right then and there. I did the same thing when I had some 3D dental x-rays taken a few months ago. It made it easy for me to get second opinions, and eliminate

potential unnecessary over-exposure with another x-ray. I suggest maintaining copies of all your blood results too. This can help you when you are doing your own research into health related topics, be it research into traditional or alternative medical topics. You may also want to consider doing this for any children or relatives for whom you have, or may have, responsibility for. For example, if an elderly relative were suddenly in need of medical care, would you be able to provide a list of their medications to emergency responders? The bottom line, in today’s healthcare arena, we all need to be pro-active in taking care of our health and the health of our loved ones. As in many other areas of life, information is power! • Susan M. Montana

FOOD AND NUTRITION

get that “feel-good” feeling by Colleen Simon Want that feel-good feeling? There are many steps you can take to improve your mood. Feeling better about you starts with being healthy and making positive life choices. Diet, exercise and stress relief are all part of maintaining good health and so is using safe, gentle, natural remedies to restore proper brain chemistry. Good emotional health is just as important as good physical health and feeling strong emotionally stems from having healthy brain chemistry. If you’ve ever asked “how can I feel good all the time”? - part of the answer has to do with ensuring that the neurotransmitters, hormones and other substances in the brain are properly balanced. When this delicate balance is disrupted it can lead to confidence issues, memory problems, mood swings and loss of energy. Some natural remedies that may help with that feel good feeling are St. John’s Wart, which helps with mood swings and passion flower,

which is a powerful nerve tonic that promotes a sense of relaxation and calm. Together, these ingredients and others like them can help the brain to function properly and allow you to feel emotionally balanced and confident. Of course, good health isn’t all about good brain chemistry. If you want help to feel good, you can start with making the right choices for your life. This includes eating a balanced diet, rich in vegetables, fruits and whole grains, to provide your body with all of the essential nutrients. Getting a proper amount of exercise is also important as it keeps muscles and bones fit and strong. Maintaining good sleep patterns is essential as the body and mind need to be well rested in order to function properly. Lack of sleep can lead to loss of concentration, depression and a general state of emotional upheaval. It is possible to feel good all the time if you take a positive approach toward maintaining physical and emotional health. That includes eating right, exercising, getting enough sleep and using natural remedies to help balance brain chemistry and restore mental equilibrium. With nature’s help, you can feel good and live life to the fullest every day. So go and embrace what life has to offer. • Colleen Simon - Health Hutt Inc., 631-615-2179, healthhuttinc.com

Papaya Smoothie

on your way to

radiant skin by Jo Ann Bellistri What woman doesn’t want beautifully smooth and radiant skin? Most of us have cabinets filled with skin care products from department and drug stores, but what about the produce aisle? The best skin care products out there are the ones we eat. We have become skilled at covering our blemishes with make-up, but why not work at preventing the blemishes with skin nutrition instead? Here are some of my favorite skin beautifiers: • Avocado: Contains beneficial essential oils as well as B-complex vitamins that nourish the skin. • Cucumber: Super hydrator that is rich in silica, an enzyme that enhances complexion. • Papaya: Contains vitamin A and a high concentration of collagen healing vitamin C. • Almonds: Loaded with skin protecting vitamin E which helps prevent sun damage. • Watermelon: High in skin protecting lycopene and a super hydrating and cooling fruit. • Cooked Tomatoes: When tomatoes are cooked, lycopene is released. Lycopene helps eliminate skin-aging free radical damage caused by ultra-violet rays. • Flax Seeds: High in omega-3 fatty acids, which help to reduce the appearance of sun spots and smooth fine lines. • Acerola Cherries: Packed with antioxidants and vitamin C that promotes collagen production. • Sweet Potatoes: The vitamin C in sweet potatoes helps smooth out wrinkles by stimulating the production of collagen. • Jo Ann Bellistri - All That Welnness 516-769-7602, allthatwellness.com

½ cup cubed fresh papaya ¼ cup fresh pineapple chunks ¼ cup fresh or frozen cherries 1 ripe banana ½ cup organic almond milk 3-4 ice cubes Blend and enjoy!

Bonus Beauty Tip: Use a not-quite ripe papaya because it contains more of the skin enhancing enzyme, papain. Rub your face with a piece of papaya and let the fruit soak in for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water and your skin will look and feel smooth and vibrant.

her pursuit of eduction and information by Hillary Call

“After a cancer diagnosis you look back and think, ‘that’s the day my life changed’,” said Karen Miller, founder of Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition (HBCAC) and herself a breast cancer survivor, diagnosed in 1987. As she pursued treatment, Karen felt she needed to know why she had breast cancer. What caused it? Could it have been

An outgoing mom and admitted “gym rat,” Karen posted ads in her gym’s locker room and her local Pennysaver to see if others were interested in why people develop breast cancer. “Three women contacted me immediately,” said Karen, “What struck me was that these women did not have breast cancer, yet they were as interested to know about what causes breast cancer as I was.”

from all over Long Island were contacting Karen to join and/or offer support. “One of the first things we did was plug the word ‘ACTION’ in our name, because our mission is to be pushing the envelope as far as understanding what causes breast cancer,” she said. Huntington. HBCAC mailed a confidential survey to 60,000 homes asking women ages 25 and over who had been diagnosed with breast cancer to respond to the survey. More than 30,000 women replied; many wrote notes in the margins, eager to share their experiences. That map took a decade to complete. What it revealed was astonishing: from 2000-2004, while the national breast cancer incidence rate was 127.8 per 1,000 women, Suffolk County showed an incidence rate of 142.7; Nassau’s was 138.7. Karen went on to testify about the study. Inter-Generational Cancer The Project uncovered a cause-and-effect relationship between environmental factors and breast cancer. What it found, Karen said, was that toxic materials in our environment, not only increase our risk of disease and cancer, they increase our children’s risk before they’re even born.

emotions

celebrations of dads, grads and then some

by Marianne P. LiBretto, L.M.H.C. The month of June unfolds a favorite season for many - Summer! This wonderful season reflects the start of lots of days full of sunshine, barbeques, trips to the beach and many great celebrations. Father’s Day ushers in a multitude of other celebrations from college graduations, engagement parties, weddings, etc… With every invitation that arrives in the mail, emotions burst out of us that can often be at opposite ends of the spectrum. Feelings of happiness, gratitude, honor, pride, surprise, joy can be mixed with feelings of stress, anxiety, and even anger when we realize that we will be attending events with a few of the people who usually surround us with bad energy as extended family members converge. What is our emotional intelligence barometer telling us right now? A mind shift towards reflecting on what is really important at this moment can help to bolster our fortitude and help us deal with old hurts and resentments, negative emotions that we just don’t want to show during a celebration. Adopting a deliberate plan of practicing positive affirmations can help to alleviate the stressful feelings that crop up during the weeks leading up to the event. It also helps to formulate a picture in your mind of the person attending the party who makes you feel uncomfortable as they were during happier times, a memory perhaps of the two of you playing as children. Adopting a plan to practice daily stress-management meditation can be highly effective, particularly to quiet the mind, focus on relaxed breathing, and dampen negative emotions. Realize you can have a self-nurturance toolbox to keep you balanced and self-regulated. You are certainly empowered - in control of every emotion and action. When we stop to realize that every negative emotion is taking away seconds, minutes, and hours of being joyful in the moment, then can we first begin to savor every moment of each event and let positive emotions emerge. Imprint the good memories of that event into your mind - how you felt celebrating Father’s Day when you were a child. The anticipation of the gifts bestowed on him and his expression of surprise as he opened them. Now years later, watching your father thank his grandchildren for coming to visit him on Father’s Day is a scenario that you can play over and over in your mind to elicit your own happy feelings. You will be rewarded with priceless memories that can never fade. • Marianne LiBretto, L.H.M.C., president of BioLogical Wellness, is a NYS licensed psychotherapist and emotional intelligence success coach and board member for Long Island Women’s Agenda. 516- 997-5852

Each party has their own therapist in the session to speak and explain on their behalf when it becomes too difficult for them to express themselves. We have had great success with this new “four way” couples counseling style and have seen couples that more than likely would have ended in divorce, find their voices, mend their hearts and discover the love and tools to stay together. summer gardens

in full bloom

Hibiscus “Rosa-Sinensis” 28

gemmagazineli.com

by Mary Rosenvinge Well, it’s not too late to plant some awesome seasonal color. Plants with the brightest, boldest colors love hot sunshine, but you can even brighten up some shady spots with the right choices. A great landscape contains layers of plant materials. Evergreen trees and shrubs provide a year-round background. Some even bear flowers or berries. Deciduous trees and shrubs offer other opportunities for colorful leaves and blooms. Consider Weigela, “Wine and Roses”, Prunus Cistena (Purple Leaf Sand Cherry). Two great trees that flower during summer are Lagerstroemia (Crape Myrtle) and Hibiscus Syriacus (Rose of Sharon). Varieties offer flowers of red, hot pink and even blue. Flowering shrubs like hydrangea come in many wonderful color varieties, especially some of the newest ones. Look for the “Great Cities” series. Some hydrangeas bloom in summer, others not until fall, so be sure to read the labels! Shrub roses such as the “Knock Out” series bloom from Spring through frost. Perennial plants (those that grow back year after year) flower at their own special moment of the season, generally for several weeks each. Rudbeckia (Black Eye Susan), Echinacea (cone flowers), Garden Phlox, Asters, Hemerocallis (various forms of Day Lillies) are all reliable for great summer color in the garden. A particularly stunning plant is the perennial form of Hibiscus which grows up to 5ft. tall with lunch-plate sized flowers in red, pinks, white or swirled combinations. In shadier areas of the garden, consider trying Monarda (sometimes called Bee Balm) which is available in red, pink and purple. The final layer for garden color comes from annuals, plants that only live in your garden for a single growing season. Some of the most jaw dropping color impact comes from this group of plants. Annuals come in all shapes and sizes too. Think about using some tropical varieties this year, such as Hibiscus “Rosa-Sinensis” and Canna. Magnificent Passiflora (Passion Flowers Vines) and Ipomoea, (Morning Glories Vines) easily grow to 15ft. in one season and will often re-seed themselves the following year. Lantana, Dahlias and Yubi Portulaca are all fairly droughttolerant choices and are available in many vibrant color combinations. Where more water is available wonderful low growing plants such as Wave Putenias, Impatiens (shade tolerant) and Verbena can blanket large areas with masses of brilliant color. So this summer, go for the WOW! Be bold and try something new. Look online or visit your local garden center to get inspiration. Most of all have fun and enjoy nature’s gifts of the season. • Mary Rosenvinge - Garden Rooms and Landscapes, Northport 631-754-8065 , gardenroomslandscapes.com

HOME AND GARDEN

the pros and cons of

downsizing

by Lisa Albinowski Most of us are feeling the economic squeeze to some extent and are looking to cut costs. To reduce monthly expenses, many people choose to downsize. That means selling your home and buying something smaller. Downsizing could mean moving from a 10,000 square foot family home to a 2,000 square foot house, or to a 1,500 sq. ft. condo. There are a lot of factors to take into consideration before moving into a smaller home. Will a smaller space work for you? Can cutting your square footage have a positive effect on your lifestyle? As a cost-cutting measure downsizing makes perfect sense. A smaller home typically means a smaller mortgage. It also means lower utility bills and reduced maintenance costs. The money you save can grow exponentially if you invest it well. Downsizing could even help pay for your retirement or your child’s college education. Certainly, finances are one of the biggest downsizing drives, but there are others. Lots of empty-nesters find their house is too big since the kids have moved out. Retirees may find that vacuuming 3,000 square feet is a waste of time and energy. Some people size down to go green. Heating a few hundred square feet is a lot more earth-friendly than

heating a few thousand. Lifestyle is perhaps the biggest factor in the equation, and depends entirely on your personal wants, needs and any changes you hope to make. When downsizing, chances are your new house is going to cost a lot less than your current one. Assuming you’re able to sell your house for a reasonable price, you could put a huge down payment toward the smaller space and end up cutting your mortgage payment in half. You’ll also cut your power bill, water bill, landscaping costs, and your property taxes. Will you be able to sell it in a timely manner? If you have to lower the price, how will that affect the projected financial benefits of your move? The good news is, the buyer’s market can help you out, since you’ll also be buying. While you may have to sell your house for less than you’d hoped, you may also be able to buy the smaller place for less. You could come out even, but it’s worthwhile to look deeply into the house sales in your neighborhood. OH, HOw i lOvE RibbON O by Diana Gaizo Ribbon comes in many colors, patterns and fabrics. You can find ribbon embellished with pearls, rhinestones, sequins and just about anything else. Ribbon is probably one of the least expensive embellishments you can use on your cards and scrapbooks. Ribbon can be used to frame a photo. One of my favorite scrapbooking methods for a wedding layout is to use ribbon that is full of pearls and/or “bling”. I then select a very thin ribbon to coordinate with it. I use the thin ribbon to frame the layout and for a really special look; I frame it with the pearled ribbon. Making flowers with ribbon is a cinch. First, select a ribbon or lace that is at least ¾” wide. Then, cut a circle to use as the base about the size of the flower you want to create. 30

gemmagazineli.com

Cover one side of the circle with double-sided tape or tape runner. Next, adhere the edge of the ribbon to the circle, gathering it slightly as you go. Most people start in the center and work their way out, but try starting on the outside rim of the circle and work your way in to the center. It is much easier and your fingers don’t get stuck in the glue. You can also use ribbon to bring focus to a title. Select a ribbon color that will make your title pop. Use a ribbon that is thinner than the height of the title letters. Adhere the ribbon to the page and then adhere the letters by placing them over the ribbon. It usually looks best if the tops and bottoms of the letters extend beyond the width of the ribbon. Be careful, once you start playing with ribbon you will become addicted! • Diana Gaizo - Not Just Scrap, 631-580-1118

PET CARE

why did the turtle cross the road? by Jungle Bob As a wildlife educator who has done a fair share of rescuing animals over the years, I get a wide variety of calls from friends and neighbors in what are perceived as “emergency” situations. A fledgling bird loose on the ground conjures a parental instinct in most people to “help it” as its inability to fly makes it look quite vulnerable. Reality is, most birds make their first leap from the nest and crash land quickly, a right of passage before they master the art of flight. In late spring my phone rings on a daily basis for another perceived “helpless” animal: the turtle. Long Island is home to many different species of turtles, but none gets more wide-eyed gapes when spotted than the common snapping turtle. Snappers are not rare, in fact almost every fresh water pond and lake has snapping turtles in it, they are just seldom seen, spending most of their time under the water, their black shells a perfect camouflage. These reptiles can reach enormous sizes of up to 75 pounds and are often spotted crossing roads on their annual journey to lay eggs. They leave their watery dens in seeking a soft patch of earth with ample sunshine to hatch their babies properly. Unfortunately, this often means crossing a roadway where they stop traffic and seem “lost”. Snappers have an ornery disposition when encountered. Good Samaritans are often rewarded with a startling snap of their heads, which can crane backwards over their shell and if picked up incorrectly will literally bite the hand that helps them. If you still feel compelled to help, make sure you grasp the animals shell near the hind legs and move her in the direction she was going. You see, their journey is the result of 100 plus million years of maternal instinct and if placed back from whence they came, they will inevitably march back cross that road. Probably the best advice is to admire the spectacle and their determination and just leave them be. They WILL cross that road, as the power of a mother’s love simply cannot be denied! • Jungle Bob- Jungle Bob’s Reptile World, Centereach 631-737-6474 junglebobsreptileworld.com 32

by Jodi Record You’ve seen them…those ridiculous looking dogs strolling down the street sporting a pair of shades. Perhaps you’ve laughed and thought to yourself that you’d never make such a fool of your dog, or perhaps you’ve turned away in disgust thinking how terrible it was that the owners put their dogs through all that in the name of fashion. But did you know those sunnies perched perfectly on that dogs snout are actually performing a very beneficial function? Just like their human counterparts, sunglasses made for dogs actually protect their eyes from harmful UV rays. As well as protecting from the sun’s rays, dog glasses also protect Fido’s eyes from debris, especially if he likes to hang his head out the window when riding in the car. So next time you see a dog wearing sunglasses, it’s OK to have a little giggle, but also think about how smart their owner is and what wonderful care they are taking of their beloved pooch. It’s no secret that it’s difficult to find a dog friendly beach during the time of year when you’re yearning to get out and enjoy some sun, surf and sand with your furry friend, but that’s where we can help! Dog owners are all too often confronted with the ‘NO DOGS ALLOWED’ or ‘Dogs allowed Sept 1 – April 30’ signs, but this summer you can breathe a sigh of relief. Long Island beaches that do welcome our four-legged companions do exist, and they’re much closer than you think. Smith Point County Park in Shirley allows dogs everywhere except between the flags, you’ll be sure to find an abundance of pooches frolicking in the water off the beach of Gardiner County Park in West Islip, and several beaches in the Hamptons allow dogs early in the morning and later in the evening. So don’t despair this summer! Your dog can revel in being the beach bum he’s always wanted to be! And remember, while you’re enjoying Long Island’s beaches, please be respectful to other beach-goers and clean up after your pet. • Jodi Record - Volunteer, Jessie’s Hope For Dogs

SUMMER GOODNESS FROM THE GARDEN by Bettie Hamilton Backyard gardens yield healthy fruits and vegetables enjoyed not only by us, but by our pets too. They are healthy “people food” options that are safe and nutritious. Favorites such as green beans, carrots, squash, pumpkin and sweet potatoes provide a good source of fiber and vitamins. Adding fresh produce to food or feeding as a treat offers variety. Colorful vegetables give a boost to pet diets and well as our own. Green beans are a low-calorie way to help your dog feel full. You can help an overweight dog shed a few pounds by reducing a small amount of his regular food and replacing it with green beans. Carrots are a great treat for dogs brimming with healthy photo-nutrients. Baby carrots right from the garden are an appetizing snack or cooked and mixed with food give an antioxidant boost. Broccoli, fed raw or cooked, is a tasty super-food. Sweet potatoes are packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and can be cooked and served whole or sliced thin and baked in low-fat oil. Pets need specific nutrients to survive - amino acids from proteins,

fatty acids and carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water. Feeding a complete and balanced dog or cat food provides the necessary nutrition, sharing goodies from the garden in moderation adds healthy variety. As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life. Happy gardening! • Bettie Hamilton - Halo Purely for Pets, halopets.com

your engine and

timing belt

what you need to know to keep your car running smoothly

www.littleshelter.com

by Kevin Albinowski Timing belts are very important to your engine and your pocket. If one of these breaks, with many engines, it could be very costly, compared to maintenance costs. The timing belt is made up of rubber and fibers for durability, flexibility and strength. They don’t last forever, same as your fan belts. The belt keeps your engine parts turning precisely in time with each other. The pistons move up and down, and the intake and exhaust valves do the same, all inside the cylinder chamber. If the valves stop moving and stay open in the cylinder as a result of a “broken belt” then when the piston reaches the top of the cylinder it will hit and bend the valve or valves in that cylinder. Some engines have a single overhead camshaft, some have a dual camshaft. Whatever your engine has, it is important to change that belt when the maintenance schedule says its time. So as you now know serious engine damages can occur. You might be shelling out for a cylinder head overhaul or a new one. This can be very expensive on today’s engines. social media the top 7 dangers of using it at work

by Mary Simmons Employees as well as employers are discovering the many benefits of using social media. In fact, only China and India have populations larger than the total number of Facebook users and Linkedin and Twitter are close behind. No matter what social media site is being utilized for information and/or networking, the benefits both personally and professionally are significant and far reaching. But there are dangers in using them as well. Employers need to have clearly defined policies for employees to follow concerning social media use in their employee handbooks to protect them from potential liability. Employees should be aware of their rights and the many pitfalls to using social media as well. 1. Give your employer’s trade secrets away. Employees need to realize that what they post is seen instantly by vast audiences and remains on the web forever. Damaging the company by innocently or purposely divulging company secrets can harm the company as well as their future chances at employment. 2. Post inappropriate pictures of yourself. It is estimated that 41% of recruiters and Human Resource professionals review social media sites before making hiring decisions. Keep the pictures of parties and unprofessional social events to a minimum. 3. Post a comment criticizing your employer’s services. Although under section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act employees are allowed to discuss working conditions, it does not include criticizing a company’s products and services. Employees have an assumed “loyalty” toward their employer and may be terminated for bad-mouthing the company. 36

gemmagazineli.com

4. Post a discriminatory comment about someone you work with. Laws and regulations governing anti-discrimination are applicable to on-line conversations as well as in-person communications. Keep interactions on social media sites professional to avoid improprieties that may lead to legal risks. 5. Send a co-worker an inappropriate joke. Remember that what you may find funny others may feel causes a “hostile work environment” and constitute sexual harassment. The best policy is: when in doubt of a joke or statements appropriateness - don’t send it! 6. Send a “harassing” message to a co-worker or superior. Harassment can take many forms. Whether it is sexual in nature or not using good judgment, common sense and acting professional at all times should be your guide. 7. Use social media for personal use all day while you are at work! Do I really need to explain why this is a problem? Statistics show that 4 out 5 employees are using social media in some form or another while they are at work. Unfortunately, it is not always being used for work projects and often distracts workers from their jobs and creates liability for themselves and their company. Education and discretion can help both employers and their employees avoid the dangers social media and guide them on how to use these new “cyber” tools to their advantage. • Mary Simmons - Director of HR Consulting Portnoy, Messinger, Pearl & Associates

SOCIAL MEDIA EDUCATION – A RESOURCE FOR PROFITS by Laney Liner Technology is a timesaver in a world of “I’m too busy”. Social media (a venue used to share information online) enables us to stay in touch with ease. For businesses, this medium can offer a personalized and speedy connection to their customers and prospects. The results from each initiative can also be charted to monitor effectiveness. It was just eight years ago when the term “social media” entered our vocabulary. Today, there are over 100 applications in this space. Some of these applications include Facebook®, LinkedIn®, You Tube®, and Twitter®. Technology produces more technology. Today’s businesspeople are responsible for determining how best to apply what’s new in social media to attract more customers. Education resources are key. Jerry Allocca, founder of CORE Interactive and the author of CONNECTED CULTURE: The Art of Communication with the Digital Generation, educates businesspeople on how to use and leverage social media through hands-on computer lab workshops and summer classes at Hofstra University Continuing Education. A recent workshop

attendee had this to say, “Jerry has the patience of a preschool teacher, the wisdom of a college professor and the personality of a rock star. He is a fantastic resource!” Allocca has a passion to help connect people online. He has authored a series of e-books that provide Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) with an understanding of social media from a marketing profitability perspective. Through these e-books, he explains how to gauge and forecast profitability as well as how to effectively track results from a social media campaign. The e-books are FREE and an incredible resource for anyone looking to make their digital media campaigns more profitable. While these e-books were written for CMOs, whose primary job description is to manage marketing profitability, all business owners who utilize social media can glean valuable information to help drive their business forward. is investing different for women? women and money: what’s biology got to do with it? by Linda E. Katz, CFP®, CDFA™ Although it is hard to generalize about women and investing, there are definite patterns that can be attributed to women in the investment world. We know that women’s traditional roles are continuing to evolve and it is clearly evident in the financial world. This is a result of many factors; none as important as the number of women in the workforce, in management, in business for themselves, and/or find themselves responsible for supporting a household often by themselves. So are there differences in how women approach financial planning? Absolutely, says this certified financial planner. With all the responsibilities women have today, “multi-tasking” is paramount to the contemporary woman. Increased efficiency is equally as important as our lives are much more complex. Women tend to move in and out of the workforce more due to childrearing and caregiving for other family members. This greatly affects their ability to save for retirement, and is very much on their minds. In my own practice I have found that women have great curiosity regarding the financial markets; what their choices are, and are most open to the idea of “financial roadmap” planning. Women ask great 38

gemmagazineli.com

questions, appreciate short-term and long-term planning, and value the relationship with their financial planner as one of key importance. Some notable differences in how we invest: 1. Women are good at clarifying where they are now financially and where they hope to be in the future. This bodes well for making a plan. 2. Women set financial goals and stick to them. I often tell my clients that no one plans to fail, but having no plan can almost guarantee failure. 3. Women take seriously the need for regular medical checkups. I find the same with regards to reviewing their investments and their financial plans. 4. Women tend to be more moderate risk takers, therefore avoiding huge stock market volatility and the emotional stress that results from this fluctuation. 5. Child-rearing, long-term care-giving and longevity inhibit their ability to contribute to their retirement plans. They are generally very open to long-term planning with this in mind, embracing concepts such as regular investments over the long time frame for building wealth. To summarize, women have been making sound financial decisions in their homes for decades. That ability to plan, analyze, and put effective financial planning into action will enable today’s woman to lead a life of wealth health in the future. • Linda Katz - CFP®, CDFA™ has received extensive training in behavioral finance and incorporates it into her financial life planning practice. BUSINESS AND FINANCE Long Island Residents Beware: Behind Your Back . . .

“ARe TheY ABouT To IncReAse YouR PRIces?” Huntington, NY: “I still have trouble believing how much I was overpaying. And to think, this time last year I was so convinced I had such a great deal.” “I should have been paying closer attention to the price increases.” I was just about to sit down to dinner, when I was interrupted by a phone call from a determined salesman. He started off the conversation by asking me an interesting question. “Do you know why most people overpay for their life insurance?” “The bottom line is most busy people buy a policy, throw it in a drawer and forget about it.” “But since you’ve been too busy to review your coverage you’ve probably never noticed the scheduled price increases as you get older.” In fact, when I stopped to think about it, I was curious to know if I had fallen into the same trap by not reviewing my own coverage. To tell you the truth, I had no idea what I was paying. Let alone, how much my rates were increasing as I got older. But instead of being stubborn, I dug out my policy and was shocked

to find my prices had started to skyrocket. O.K.! It was obvious I needed to deal with this problem. But here’s the catch. If I make a change and buy a new policy, I’ll end up being in the same boat again a year or two from now. But, what else is there to do? “At last, an easy way without the hassle!” I read an article in a financial magazine about some guy who cut his term life insurance cost in half. Yeah, right! Give me a break. But being curious, I called the 800# to receive a copy of the free report mentioned in the article. As much as I hate answering machines, I was happy to listen to a recorded message instead of having to speak with a salesman. When the report came. . . “I finally understood what I, (and everyone else) was doing wrong!” The report explained that the most costly mistake people make when buying life insurance is they fail to get level rates. In fact, I found out that there are many quality insurance companies that specialize in offering level price

policies. Some even have rates that remain the same for 10, 15 or 20 years. However, finding these type policies is not always easy. There are over 1,893 companies who sell life insurance. So even if you spend hours of your valuable time researching, you would probably drive yourself crazy trying to make sense of it all. Fortunately, this report identifies an insurance company that does offer great prices, level rates and excellent quality. All you have to do is leave your date of birth and coverage amount on the answering machine. “Two thumbs up!” “If you want to avoid overpaying for your life insurance, I advise you to call the number below. Get a copy of this eye-opening report for yourself.” “To get your free report call toll free, 1-800-274-4453 24 hours a day, for a free recorded message. There is no charge for this service. And most importantly there is no one on the telephone to hassle you.” “I must say it’s refreshing to see that someone is finally giving the average consumer the scoop about life insurance prices.” The preceding story is a dramatization of every day frustrations experienced by many consumers.

However, you can rock your sense of style and be in the know as a mom thanks to Lyss Stern. Lyss Stern is a Mom and Founder of Divalysscious Moms (divamoms.com), a luxury lifestyle company. Her company provides an outlet for moms to talk and share as a community with a sexy, fun spin. She develops trend reports and events for moms, including the one I recently attended where The New York Times best-selling author and mom, E.L. James, answered questions about her Fifty Shades erotic romance trilogy. Fifty Shades of Grey, the first in the trilogy, was simultaneously released as an on-demand paperback and an e-book according to Russell Perreault, VP/Director of Publicity at Vintage Books & Anchor Books. E.L. James (E.L.) participated in a Q&A session at the Divalysscioushosted event, which included some of these questions by audience members (AM): AM: “If you could have a mountain hideaway or a beach house which one would you take?” 42

E.L.: “A beach house. Every time.” AM: “Do you prefer summer or winter?” E.L.: “Winter. You wear more clothes; enough said.” AM: “How have your personal experiences affected your writing?” E.L.: “I had to do a bit of research. It was great, great fun.” AM: “What propelled you to write these books?” E.L.: “I started with a small idea. If you met someone who was into this lifestyle, what would happen? It just went from there and it has taken me on this extraordinary journey-to places I didn’t expect.” Want to learn more about E.L. James? THE BEAT OF LONG ISLAND

movie date night!

For ten years, every weekend, rain or shine, even in the bitter cold of the winter months, the L. I. Harley Riders, formerly the Lighthouse Harley Owners Group, ride their Harley Davidson motorcycles along the roads of Long Island. Among these riders you will find The Ladies of Harley. These strong women support their local AMA charter and pride themselves as motorcycle enthusiasts with a cause. Antoinette Greco, the representative of the Ladies of Harley, a division of the L.I. Harley Riders, a not-for-profit corporation, explains each woman rider is also a member of the National Harley Owners Group (HOG). In addition to participating in the L.I. Harley Riders events, these women also organize their own rides. Each September, they ride for the Susan G. Komen NYC Race for the Cure, to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Under the direction of club president, Bill Vultaggio, these Long Island Harley riders continue to support their local communities as they travel from Montauk to California, following the rules of the road and creating memories along the way For more information on the L.I. you all a simple adieu and leave you with one suggestion for a “Ladies Who Lunch” afternoon activity. See, “Girl’s Night Out” does not always have to be necessarily in the EVENING. Sunday afternoons between the yoga class at 8am, dropping little Johnny off at lacrosse practice at 9:00am and the supermarket shopping at 2pm can be easily be interrupted by an impromptu brunch for you and your favorite ladies. At this point I cannot recommend a more economical atmosphere than Churchills in Rockville Centre. Say hello to Tommy the bartender inside, and grab a Mimosa (or four) and sit out back in the Spring-time sun and order the Eggs Benedict, the French toast or the Breakfast Quesadilla. Now is your time to squeak out an hour and a half of your busy life to concentrate on catching up with the people that support you no matter what: your girls. Did I mention that there are unlimited Mimosas and Bloody Marys throughout your entire brunch? I can hear the phones dialing already, and the texts being sent. Uh-oh, I may have just lost myself a seat at the hottest spot for brunch on a Sunday morning! I can hear the laughter from here. Enjoy.

INSPIRATION & EMPOWERMENT

SELF-LOvE FORmS ANd FOSTERS YOuR FOuNdATION Self-love forms the foundation of your single, most important relationship - that with yourself. The strength of all your other relationships is exactly equal to the strength of that foundation. To love yourself is not just a self-esteem boosting piece of advice. It is the prerequisite to truly loving others. The Golden Rule tells us to “love your neighbor as you love yourself”. You are likely to have heard it many times, expressed in different ways, thinking it is about loving others. Look a little closer though, and you will find that at its very center is the command to love yourself. First, let’s dispel some myths about what it means to love yourself. Self-love is not about being arrogant or egotistical. It is not about comparing yourself to others to determine if you are good enough. It is not about always putting yourself first at the expense of others. It is not about always getting your way. It is not about always winning. It is not about “only looking after number one”. Comparing yourself to others can be the most self-limiting and pointless thing you can do. Comparing yourself is the main source of your biggest insecurities and prevents the kind of self-worth and self-esteem that is at the back of all real success. That dreaded feeling of “not being good enough” has its roots in comparing yourself and stands in the way of your success from the outset. Even if you manage to achieve outwardly success, in spite of comparing yourself, it can never be accompanied by the inner peace

that comes with an unshakeable sense of self, free of any need for comparison. Loving yourself is a win-win for all. It provides you with an inner happiness, confidence and peace of mind that is not easily swayed by outside events and opinions. It enables you to make healthier choices and the best decisions across all areas of your life from your intimate relationships to your finances. It allows you to truly rejoice in other people’s good fortune rather than wondering “why not me” or even resenting it. It enables you to be more genuinely loving towards others and to be of greater service to the world at large. ultimately, the more you love yourself, the more everything and everyone you encounter benefits. “You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.” Siddhartha Gautama Buddha • Paula Klee Parish - Social & Community Psychology and master Life Coach – President of Performance Solutions, Inc. – performancesolutions. biz - Founder Women on the move – womenonthemoveli.com – Author of: The Journey to Be Your Own Best Friend: How to discover Your Power Within - email Paula at: paula@paulakleeparish.com

THE RIGHT TO BE mE I recently exhibited at a women’s business expo in Holbrook, NY with about fifty other business owners. On the morning of the expo I stepped into my closet expecting to reach for my neatly pressed black business suit, but instead my lime green, floor length dress with its flowing Hawaiian leaves and pleated geometric patterned bottom caught my eye. I looked down at the white platform sandals on the floor below and thought how comfortable my feet would feel after standing in them for five or six hours compared to the high heels I planned to wear. As I considered my choices, a memory of a similar event I attended years ago came to mind. A fellow female business owner, noticing that I was wearing a floral spring dress, thought it necessary to tell me, “You need to be in a business suit, if you want to be taken seriously as a female business owner.” I stood there for a moment allowing the energy of that statement to affect my decision, when my inner voice asked, “Who do you want to be, Jean?” Over the years I have come to know the internal guidance that my higher self offers and have learned to trust it. “As I reached for 46

the dress, I answered, “I want to be me.” Each of us has been taught the beliefs expected in our roles as women, daughters, wives, and mothers; beliefs that define us by keeping us in neat little boxes. Yet if we pay attention to our own inner voice, it will always say, “You have the right to be you in everything you think, say or do. You can allow yourself to follow the beliefs of others, or choose to be guided by your own heartsong.” I knew the universe was affirming that I had made the right choice by the wonderful comments I got from other participants throughout the day about my lime green dress. None of those compliments even came close to the one I received when I walked over to my neighbor’s table with its display of beautiful women’s hats. As I picked up a huge white one trimmed in a thin black velvet ribbon with a large double bow, I felt like Eliza doolittle stepping into the Ascot race scene in my Fair Lady. A friend walking by stopped, noticed me in my hat, and asked, “What have you done with yourself, Jean-you are absolutely glowing.” I smiled and answered back, “I’m just expressing my right to be me.” • Jean Summit-Riker - 631-289-1371, tranquilitybasedlifecoaching.com

WOMEN, MONEY AND EMOTIONS How many of you have plenty of money flowing into your life on an ongoing basis? If you don’t, read on. As a psychotherapist and business coach, I’ve helped hundreds of people heal emotional pain so they can lead deeply fulfilling lives. Along the way, money issues invariably come up as part of their emotional struggle. The truth is that money issues are never really about money. It is the meaning of money that elicits an emotional response. If you’re not happy with your relationship with money, its time to make changes. Visualizing success can be helpful, but it’s really only a partial approach. Generalizing, women tend to play small and contracted around money that represents not standing in their power. Feeling contracted around money includes scarcity, deprivation, and fear of there not ever being enough. In contrast, feeling expansive is about being in flow, at peace, joyful, and trusting in sufficiency. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to feeling either expansive or contractive. Nor does it help to imagine that simply being expansive

all the time will solve your financial woes. The key resides in uncovering your money mindset (which took root in childhood) and developing a new mindset that will allow you to increasingly relate to money from a place of expansion. To help you get started, here are some helpful questions. Be gentle with yourself and don’t expect instant change. I can tell you that if you are consistent and persistent then you can begin to shift your money mindset. When you feel yourself “wince” around money, ask yourself: • What is the underlying feeling? (e.g. anger, sadness, fear, anxiety, shame, guilt) • What is the deeper message? (e.g. “I’m not enough”) • What if that were no longer important to you today? • How could you deal with the situation differently now? • OnFire Alyse Parise LCSW, Psychotherapist and Certified Business Coach, 631-689-6272 alyseparise@poweroutcomes.com
