THE MODERN-DAY RENAISSANCE WOMAN by Lidia Szczepanowski Did you know, however, that during the Renaissance Period, when DaVinci, Galileo, Machiavelli and Michelangelo were “doing their thing” in Europe, women were typically born and raised for the purpose of one day marrying well, being loyal to their husband and giving birth to boys? Crippling limitations were placed on developing artistic or intellectual skills they may have naturally possessed. Women today have countless options to be whomever and do whatever they chose but it’s taken us thousands of years to catch up to our male counterparts. Despite the myriad of opportunities available to us, are we taking full advantage of everything life has to offer? Are we feeling unfulfilled and we’re not sure why? The answer is simple…take a lesson from our predecessors and embark upon a path towards becoming a Modern-Day Renaissance Woman! A Modern-Day Renaissance Woman is of no particular age, size, shape, ethnicity or culture. While some of the components that define her are acquired over time, others are inherent and simply need to be cultivated or “reborn”. Whether she works full time or is a stay-at-home mom, whether she is married or single, or whether she lives in a city or in rural town is of no significance. The Modern-Day Renaissance Woman recognizes and identifies her own unique talents, skills, and other positive qualities, opens her heart, mind and soul to developing these gifts while challenging herself to take on new experiences and living life to its fullest. She recognizes the benefits of learning for the sake of learning and is lead by the notion that all knowledge should be embraced and ones natural capabilities and 6

gemmagazineli.com

passions should be developed as fully as possible. The remarkable individual who is viewed as a Modern-Day Renaissance Woman possesses classic cultural grace and she is complex and universal. She has a special presence about her and while she is intriguing and confident, she is not arrogant. She shines and exudes positive energy wherever she goes. She’ll walk into a room and everyone will know she’s there. Heads will always turn. A Modern-Day Renaissance Woman also understands that genuine and long-lasted fulfillment does not come from external sources or events but from the energy found within herself. She realizes that by focusing on inner happiness and development, she can maintain a positive attitude even when confronted with life’s many challenges. Her true meaning in life is created by her own perception and reality, not others. So go out ladies and conquer the world. Learn a foreign language or how to ballroom dance, act, sing, or experiment with photography, gardening, interior decorating, sewing, knitting, cooking, or car care or take that wine appreciation, art history, boxing or pole dancing class you always thought about taking. It’s all waiting for you. Never stop learning, learn from history, and appreciate life not despite its challenges but because of them. Your potential is limitless. “Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself” - Chinese proverb • Lidia Szczepanowski is an Attorney, Black Belt, Personal Safety Expert, Former Mrs. New York, Journalist, Everything Lidia, Inc. A WomAn mAking A Difference on Long isLAnD by Hillary Call Long Island native Kathleen Kirkwood, dubbed “The Queen of Shapewear,” has been famous among QVC viewers for her “Forever Young” line of transforming silhouetteslimmers, camisoles and more. Her newest initiative, the Bra Recycling Agency (or B.R.A.), turns thrown-away bras into glamorous red carpets. “More than half a billion bras are sold each year in the U.S.,” said Kirkwood, who donates all the money garnered from recycling the underwire in bras to the MetroHealth Foundation for breast cancer research. “If every woman recycled a single bra through B.R.A., that would be approximately a $4 million donation,” she said. It would also keep the bras out of landfills – a better solution for the environment. “Don’t burn your bras, recycle them!” Who knew our faithful, worn-out bras could be put to such good use? If you’ve never been to a star-studded event such as the Golden Globes or the Emmys, this is your chance to send your bra along in your place. Kirkwood’s ecofriendly red carpets have seen the soles of glitterati at the Oscars, Fashion Week and other exclusive events. She recently partnered with Elle360’s Accessory Lounge at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2012 to provide the padding for the red carpet underfoot. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently endorsed her as part of his GROWNYC green initiative. The Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund recognized Kirkwood’s efforts with a humanitarian award. “To be recognized by such a champion for breast cancer research, and especially someone who has made such tremendous contributions for Long Island with the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Center in Stony Brook, was truly an honor.” Send Your Bras to the Red Carpet Donate your used bras today! For a limited time only, GEM readers can use this link to get the label to send in your bra for recycling. Click the link, print out the label and send it in! SPREAD THE WORD! Get your local retailers involved in recycling with the B.R.A. project! Attached to the label is a postcard – print it out and bring it to your favorite intimate apparel shop, asking them to place a B.R.A. bin in their store.LINK For Shipping Label brarecyclingagency.com/label, brarecyclingagency.com.

FASHION REPORT HOW TELEVISION AND MAGAZINES AFFECT THE WAY WOMEN DRESS by Cathy Berger Fashion magazines have been around since the mid-1800s and style TV shows like “What Not to Wear” for over a decade. We can’t readily change our facial features, height or build but we can change our look by the clothes we wear. After all, our dress and appearance does impact how others view your image, a plus or negative in today’s competitive business market. International super model, and “Project Runway” TV host and executive producer, Heidi Klum’s well known motto is “Image is everything,” and for good reason. Your image is your passport to the world. It tells people in an instant who you are and how you perceive and feel about yourself. Fashion, taste and style - commonly interchangeable words yet they’re quite different elements. After all, Fashion is a material expression of the current times garments offered by designers and retailers who feel will

sell. Taste is the preference for a particular design and ranges widely to the extent that the “best taste” is usually considered one’s own. And Style is the most complex derivative of clothing and expression. Funny enough, what really influences a woman’s wardrobe more than any style show or fashion article is seeing a star or royal wearing a trendsetting piece on you guessed it - TV or in a magazine. The Duchess of Cambridge and future Queen of England, Kate Middleton, wore that famous blue wrap dress at the announcement of her engagement and the stores couldn’t keep them on the shelves. Whatever they’re wearing, the important thing to consider is to make sure that the little blue wrap dress complements your body type. Don’t follow fashion trends that are not suitable for your build, age, career and lifestyle. Being properly groomed and wearing clean, unwrinkled clothes are far more important than keeping up with the Kardashians. • Cathy Berger Fashion Societé fashionsociete.com cathy@fashionsociete.com 8

FASHION REPORT

SPRING 2012 FASHION TRENDS by Leigh Merrill As the trees bloom, the weather warms up and the first hints of spring are in the air, it is time to transform your wardrobe from winter to spring! There are many changes that occur in fashion with the changing of the seasons, but there’s no need to buy a whole new wardrobe. I will share with you some of the hottest trends this season and ways to remix your wardrobe using your winter garments. Color blocking is a huge trend this season. It’s become a perfect way to experiment with colors and patterns. Celebrities are helping to put this trend on the map by gracing the red carpets wearing these daring combinations of color. Are you going to your local market and looking for something fashionable to wear? A purple tee with red jeans? This may not have worked in the past but with the color blocking exception, you will look trendy and ready for spring. Have a date after your grocery run and no time to go home? No worries, add a pair of heels and a blazer and you’re ready to go!

You can find ways to exit from your winter wardrobe by adding splashes of spring trends. A typical outfit during the winter may include skinny jeans, a warm jewel toned sweater with pair of Uggs to match, nails painted in a deep burgundy color, a scarf and a trendy pea coat. Remix that outfit and make it spring appropriate. Keep the jeans, replace the sweater with a floral printed blouse [another huge trend this season], replace the Uggs with a cute pair of flats, keep the scarf, lose the coat and paint your nails in a nice bright color like Aruba Blue or Orange.Replace wardrobe pieces by taking away the bulkiness and adding splashes of color and signature pieces. Shop H&M, Forever 21 or Mandee stores and get a few trendy tops for spring to mix and match with your winter cardigans, jeans and scarves. Many think the best part about spring is the warm weather but I think the best part is being able to experiment with fashion. It’s so enlightening to see clothing go from bold colors to bright colors or from solids to interesting prints. The best part about fashion; it’s a chance to express yourself. Remember, don’t only follow trends, be a trendsetter. • Leigh Merrill Gossip Meets Couture gossipmeetscouture.com leigh@gossipmeetscouture.com

SPRING’S HIDDEN “GEMS”” by Maria Paray Hello Spring! We all want to get out from under the winter, economic turmoil and constant barrage of politics. It’s time for something new and fun! The Spring 2012 Pantone colors are out, with Tangerine Tango – a bright, spiced red orange - capturing honors as Color of the Year. So according to red carpet and runway trends, this spring look for BRIGHT and look for ABUNDANCE! An armful of bangles and bracelets is not too much – thin, wide, mixed gold and silver, it all works. The $11.8 million auction of Elizabeth Taylor’s famous La Peregrina pearl necklace has made everyone hungry for pearls. Look for necklaces and earrings of affordable freshwater pearls. Go with natural color for a classic look, or dyed for a little whimsy – either way, look

Monica Vinader Mini Marie pendant

Chan Luu drop earrings Lanvin Geometric Swarovski crystal bracelet

for pearls with high luster for a beautiful glow. Pendant necklaces are great for gifts – no sizing worries! Layer different textures, lengths, metal chains, and leather necklaces. Mix beaded necklaces with pendants on chains – look for various media – silver, glass, bronze, and wood. A plethora of pendants looks especially well on the unadorned shifts that are trending so popular right now.

Let the necklaces and bracelets take charge! Earrings hang long and lean. Studs in quirky shapes – stars, crescents, fleur de lis – are also surging and are much friendlier to earlobes than the mega earring styles of late. Even if you can’t afford a completely new wardrobe, use your existing jewelry and maybe a few new pieces for a refreshed spring look. Have fun with it and trust your own sense of style! • Maria Paray Maria Paray Designs mariaparay.com april 2011

BEAUTY TRENDS

TROPICAL SPRING HUES by Adriana Vater Corals, turquoise blues and blushed brights are beauty’s tropical hues as we steadily wind our way toward summer. Makeup is an island romance of undersea pastels and tropical fish colors. Swipe hushed tangerine tones, canary yellows and easy key-lime greens on eyelids. These beautiful, subdued brights play against eyes boldly lined in deep-sea blues and fan coral fuchsias to add drama. Try lining the eye with Aveda’s Eye Definer and define with Violet Coast or Sea Grass Shadows. Lips are more of a natural matte with no liner. To help bring out this look, prep lips with light tinted moisturizer and translucent loose powder. Line and fill lips with Oyster Pink or Star Coral nourish-mint lip definer. Add the finishing POP of color---use a lip and concealer brush to apply Beach Thistle or Coral Sea lip glaze. Face has more of a natural even look to enhance the eyes. Use shimmer shell petal essence face accents as an allover skin powder. These colors go hand-in-hand with spring fashion, which features groovy styles and watercolor designs harking back to the 1960s. Jewel tones mesmerize – in pops of color on billowy frocks. Midnight blues add intrigue to neutral outfits. Fun prints, flowy fabrics are the perfect compliment to beauty’s tropical shades. Easy, natural textures and earthy tones also pair beautifully with the season’s lighter, but brighter, colors in beauty. Sheer layers layered with touchable textures look sophisticated, relaxed. • Adriana Vater Spa Adriana Salon & Spa spaadriana.com

HAIR TRENDS

E

ver wonder what life would be like as a blonde, a brunette or even a fiery red head? Color for hair is the hottest trend this spring! You can choose to be subtle or go bold, but hair color is a sure way to express yourself. Not sure what color would best compliment your features and attitude, ask your stylist. Permanent color contains ammonia, which is needed to lighten hair. Permanent color is also the only one that can cover gray one hundred percent. Other single processes can only cover up to seventy five percent. Peroxide, semi or demi color, or non-ammonia products are gentler to your hair but can only make your hair darker. Going lighter may take a two procedure high-lift color, or a double process service. This process can lift your natural shade more than 4 levels. This is achieved by using a higher volume of peroxide. However, the maintenance is greater, as it may require touch ups every 3 weeks.

Hot Hair This Spring It’s All About Color

It is highly recommended you leave this process to the professional. Amazingly, this method can transform one with natural black hair color into a platinum blonde. Highlights and low lights on any color can mimic those beautiful natural highlights we are born with. Highlights are especially popular with dirty blonde or mousy brown hair, as they add life to a dull color. Low lights add darkness and warmth. When it comes to hair color, follow instructions carefully, or have it done by a professional because corrective color may be very expensive. As in fashion, hair color trends can come and go. To achieve a new look that works for you, ask your stylist and experiment. Have some fun and let a little color go to your head! • Grazia Cooney and Colleen White CSI Salon & Spa

BEAUTY TRENDS

WAKE UP YOUR SKIN FOR SPRING by Michelle Kelly We have been lucky enough to have a mild winter, however, even during these winter months client’s still complain of their skin feel dry, and dull. With spring just around the corner, now is a good time to put a pep in your skin’s step and awaken our complexions. Below are a few good recommendations for giving your skin that little kick that will give it back that youthful, healthy glow…. Deep cleansing- a good “spring cleaning” facial with a focus on cleaning out embedded pores and purifying the skin with add much clarity to your complexion and limit potential blemishes. Chemical peels- For a subtle pick me up, a light “lunchtime peel” such as a fruit acid peel, a lactic, or glycolic, or flower acid peel will all gently remove the top layer of skin revealing a smooth and soft texture. For a more drastic result and additional brightening, a multi-acid medium depth peel such as a Jessner Peel

will lift pigmentation, acne scars, and improve wrinkles. LED phototherapy- a non-invasive, pain free advanced method. LED light stimulates photoreceptors in the skin cells producing a wound healing effect that initiates the production of collagen and elastin. This treatment is excellent for rosacea, and inflamed skin. This modality works best in combination with microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and oxygen infusion. LED light will optimize the results of any other skin care modality. Oxygen Infusion Treatment-the ultimate burst of vitamins, antioxidants, and hydration. Celebrities such as Madonna and Jennifer Lopez tout this skin quenching treatment. This treatment will plump up the skin with an instant reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. An excellent choice for brides, before any special event, or for the ultimate radiant complexion. • Michelle Kelly LaPiele Boutique Spa lapieleskincare.com

Your body will become longer, leaner and stronger, and more flexible and your posture will improve. Additionally, your mental health will benefit as you learn to breathe and relax.

by Bonne Marano-Marcus Spring is here and it’s time to get back into shape. Keep in mind fitness doesn’t have to be all work, it can also be fun. There are so many forms of fitness to choose from. The key to keeping it fun is to mix it up. Here are a few of my favorites. TaBaTa - Described as “courageous, dynamic, group fitness class that’s scientifically proven to enhance overall physical strength, challenge tenacity, and dramatically transform the body in weeks.” I love it! I’m a little biased though because I teach it. The class is made up of several intervals that include 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest repeated 8 times for a total of 4 minutes per interval. Intense doesn’t adequately describe it. It’s more like 240 seconds of h*ll. Well except the ten seconds you get to rest. Exercises range from lunges off a step while doing biceps curls, to push-ups, to squats with shoulder presses and more using every piece of equipment imaginable; everything from, medicine balls and dumbbells to kettle bells, Bosus and bands.

Say OM! - Yoga can be practiced year round, inside or outside, as long as you have a mat. It’s spring – time to pull on your eco friendly yoga wear in fresh spring colors and take your routine outdoors so that you can absorb the 16

JOin The Craze! - Zumba® is now being taught at over 50,000 locations in 75 countries, with an astonishing 6 million participants taking Zumba classes every week. Why? It’s a workout camouflaged as a dance party. Created by celebrity fitness trainer, “Beto” Perez, in the mid-‘90s it combines easy to follow routines with the Latin rhythms of salsa, merengue, hip-hop and more that will blow you away. Zumba is the kind of cardio workout that makes it to get in shape. The best part is that you don’t even need to know how to dance. BOnd wiTh FidO! (my dog is Zoe) Combine your dog walking duties with an exercise routine ideal for the two of you. If neither of you have been as active as you should be, start with three days per week for an hour and work your way up to five days per week. Select a location that has a semi-soft ground to protect your exercise partner’s paws. Dog-permitted parks, wooded trails, beaches or quiet grass fields are the most suitable places to exercise together. One caveat; before jumping into a strict exercise regimen, it is important to check with your vet to make certain your dog is up for the task. • Bonne Marano-Marcus Personal Trainer and author of “The Complete Bride’s Workout Guide”. bonnemarcus@gmail.com

the great outdoors by Carol Burke Spring is a time to re-energize your workout. So why not take advantage of the great outdoors and get outside for your workout? A little of the suns vitamin D will also work wonders for you. One of my favorite ways to enjoy a sunny day is to go for a hike through the woods. There are so many beautiful trails on Long Island. Why not zone in on the local trails and visit a new one every week? Remember, some trails are not only for walking but are also very suited for mountain biking as well as jogging. Exercising in such beautiful surroundings not only energizes you but leaves you with a feeling of well being and inner balance. Finish your day with a cup of green tea and a book on local hikes like, Best Easy Day Hikes Long Island by Susan Finch or for the bike rider, Short Bike Rides on Long Island Guide Book, by Phillip Angelillo. by Lauren Geldmacher Always start with a healthy, balanced diet. A healthy diet, consisting of plenty of protein along with fruits and veggies, will help you burn unwanted fat from your arms and help you achieve the results of your workout faster. Start with a bicep curl by holding dumbbells in each hand at your side. You can change the angle of your palms with each set, but always be sure to curl the dumbbell all the way up and squeeze your bicep, and then release back down. Do this exercise 3 times for 12 repetitions at a moderate intensity. Now for the opposite side/back sides of your arm- called the triceps-- perform triceps extensions. Hold your arm with the elbow bent; keep your forearm parallel with the floor. Slowly, raise your arm straight, then back to the starting position. Do three sets of 12 on each arm, alternating them or together. Again, make sure you are squeezing the muscle so it burns for each rep and you feel your muscles contracting. When you use more control, your muscle will be targeted for better results. Do these exercises for your arms at least 3 times each week and you will see results in a short time. Remember consistency is important. • Lauren Geldmacher Body Designs Fitness Studio bodydesignshuntington.com 631-423-0071

Are you being treated for osteoporosis? Are you being treated for osteoporosis? Pay attention! Do you take or are you about to start taking medication for osteoporosis? How does osteoporosis medication relate to a dental exam and dental treatment? While not immediately obvious, you will see that your dentist MUST BE MADE AWARE that you will be taking any of these medications when you fill out your initial medical history, or upon returning to your existing dental office for your periodic exam. Many women today are being treated for osteoporosis with a class of drugs known as Bisphosphonates. Some common names for these drugs include, but are not limited to: Boniva, Fosamax, Actonel, Zometa and Aredia. These medications have been used for years with many positive results in the fight against osteoporosis, however, they also come with some serious negative side effects that you need to be aware of. While helpful in treating osteoporosis, studies the past few years have shown that even oral administration of these drugs can adversely affect the way that bone heals in the mouth. More specifically, any dental procedure in which the tooth supporting bone is traumatized or manipulated in any significant way may cause a condition known as osteonecrosis (osteo = bone, necrosis = death.) This condition is one in which the traumatized bone has a limited capacity for healing properly, and it begins to die and spread from the area of initial trauma. This can become a difficult process to control and can occur in a significant percentage of cases. Some studies have shown that upwards of 4% of women that are taking or have taken oral bisphosphonates have developed some degree of osteonecrosis after a tooth extraction. To complicate things a bit more, this class of drugs remains in the bone for years, so its deleterious effects remain in place for years as well. It is imperative that the patient who requires an extraction or any significant bone manipulation will need to have the procedure done prior to commencing with the aforementioned medications, especially since the drug remains in the bone tissue for years after stopping treatment. These drugs actually have a 10-year half-life in bone. Once you start taking it, it stays with you a long time. Keeping your teeth healthy has never been so important. If at all possible, have a dental checkup and cleaning before commencing treatment with any of these medications, as well as during and post treatment. • Dr. Richard Rongo Huntington Village Dental

The concepT of Telemedicine by Susan M. Montana Telehealth is the delivery of health-related services and information via telecommunications technologies. Telehealth could be as simple as two health professionals discussing a case over the telephone or as sophisticated as doing robotic surgery between facilities at different ends of the globe. Telehealth is an expansion of telemedicine, and it encompasses preventative, promotive and curative aspects of healthcare delivery. Telehealth stresses a myriad of technology solutions. For example, physicians use email to communicate with patients, order drug prescriptions and provide other health services. One of the most significant increases in telehealth usage is the home monitoring of conditions by patients whose clinical trials in the UK have shown to improve mortality by around 47%. The concept of Telemedicine is that the health care system could save considerable money, and patients could experience a heightened level of support for particularly delicate conditions, if the provider could

access the patient remotely. As technology has gotten more sophisticated and less expensive to deploy, telehealth services have become more appealing to all parties – patients, insurance companies and providers of healthcare services. Medicare has issued very comprehensive guidelines, and many Medicaid agencies have adopted the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ guidelines as well. Commercial insurance carriers address it in their provider manuals, but always with a litany of caveats as to when, if, and how much they might pay. And the documentation, coding and reimbursement rules are likely to trip up providers as they attempt to participate in this new healthcare delivery system. The good news is that if this technology is able to deliver as promised, we could be welcoming a new breed of medical monitoring devices in our homes in the very near future. • Susan M. GOOd HealtH, Great SMile

Why Orthodontics Matters

by Dr. Inna Gellerman Having a spectacular smile is almost always a sign of overall good health. Many people think that braces and orthodontic treatments are all about a great smile and looking good, but that’s just part of the whole story. Current medical research makes a strong case for the importance of good dental hygiene, and that includes straight, properly aligned teeth and a correct bite. Teeth that are crowded or overlapping make it difficult to properly clean the teeth and gums. When

20

gemmagazineli.com

brushing or flossing cannot get into the spaces between the teeth, plaque begins to build up, leading to tooth decay and periodontal, or gum disease. Cleaning and maintaining healthy teeth and gums work best when every surface of the teeth and gums can be seen and treated properly. A bad bite can be the result of a poorly aligned upper jaw or lower jaw. In some cases, the smile doesn’t look bad, but an imprint shows a rocky road of teeth that do not fit together smoothly when the mouth is closed. This can place extra stress on the muscles involved in chewing and lead to headaches, TMJ disorders and even neck, shoulder and back pain. It also leads to uneven wear on the teeth surfaces, as some of the surfaces grind together and others don’t make contact at all. An overbite, when the upper teeth lie too far forward, can give the appearance of ‘buck’ teeth, even when the teeth themselves may be perfectly fine. An underbite is when the lower teeth sit too far forward. If a person has the bad fortune to have an underbite combined with upper teeth that do not come forward enough, their face may look awkward. This is particularly difficult for children and pre-teens, who are extremely sensitive to appearance. When people know that they have unattractive teeth, they become self-conscious and sometimes change how they smile. Trying to cover your teeth during a smile, with lips clenched over the teeth, looks strained and unnatural. But when people do smile, they make their immune system stronger. Clinical research measuring the impact of smiling on body chemistry and blood pressure has documented the fact that smiling reduces blood pressure, releases endorphins that make you feel good and because a smile uses certain facial muscles, also improves the look on your face. An attractive smile includes the size, alignment, proportion, and shape of the teeth, as well as the brightness of a smile. It means that the gum line is parallel to the upper lip, and not too much gum tissue is displayed while smiling. The front teeth are in proportion to the side teeth so they don’t stand out. The mouth is the “entrance” to the rest of the body and its health is critical for proper breathing, speaking, chewing, swallowing and conveying emotions to the rest of the world. We know today that straight teeth and a balanced bite play a strong role in maintaining the natural health of the mouth and of the entire body. Modern orthodontics makes it possible for everyone to have a spectacular smile! • Dr. Inna Gellerman Children & Adult Orthodontics Spectacular Smiles, Huntington

THE HCG DIET by Dr. Scott Blyer The HCG diet has gained national exposure, this year more than ever before. Loosing 0.5 - 2 pounds per day and keeping it off- sounds too good to be true? It is not. This diet does work. Unfortunately there are people who try to capitalize on people’s naiveté and exploit this diet for their financial benefit. Medical grade HCG is a controlled substance only available with a prescription from a physician. In health food stores and online, HCG is made available to the public. The HCG being sold here is misleading in that it is not medical grade HCG. This is homeopathic HCG. This is the only way these companies can sell to the public without violating federal and state laws. The true amount of HCG contained in homeopathic drops is untraceable. It is the equivalent of filling a tub of water and putting one drop of HCG in it. Homeopathic HCG does not work. Medical grade HCG should only be administered with an experienced physicians’ supervision. If this diet is administered properly, it is a safe and effective method of weight loss. Some of the benefits of HCG are the suppression of one’s appetite, a rebooting of your metabolism, cravings diminished, the metabolism of fat and maintained weight loss. Weight loss is a billion dollar industry and the increasing number of obese Americans is staggering. The HCG diet is a viable option and should be considered for those struggling with weight loss of 10 pounds and up. It should be considered before options of lap band, bypass or other surgical interventions. I am glad to hear the FDA has stepped in to help regulate this market. • Dr. Scott Blyer

HEALTH & WELLNESS AlleviAte Your StreSS by Eileen Lichtenstein As a normal part of life, stress enables us to get things done. If left unmanaged, stress can lead to emotional, psychological, and even physical problems. Stress causes a disruption in the flow of vital energy through the body. These energetic imbalances can throw off the immune system or cause symptoms of pain, sleep disturbances, abnormal digestion, headaches, menstrual irregularities, aggravation of already troublesome health conditions and, over time, more serious illnesses can develop. Stress is cumulative. Stressful situations that last over a long period of time can create an ongoing low-level stress that puts continual pressure on the nervous system, and can cause the overproduction of hormones. The extra stress hormones may wear out the body’s reserves, lead to fatigue, depression, a weakened immune system, and a host of serious physical and psychological ailments. Some signs of stress overload include: - anxiety or panic attacks - feelings of constant pressure, hassled and hurried - irritability and moodiness Research has shown that EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), meditation and relaxation techniques can reduce stress levels. While it isn’t always possible to remove the external forces causing stress, the ability to effectively deal with stress is a choice. Take time for yourself to cultivate the energy you need to handle your stress more skillfully and effectively.

Here are some coping strategies for stress and anger well researched and positively tested: - Take a few deep relaxation breaths. - Do NOT curse. - Walk away, release (walk, scream, punch the air-pillow) and calm down. - Be aware of your triggers, which are whatever presses your buttons. If you don’t know what they are, get help to find out. - Make it a priority to take a “mini-vacation” by finding time to relax every day. Lie down and visualize a place where you’ve felt very relaxed in the past and be there with all your senses. - Get UP, open the drapes and exercise, dance or do yoga. - Journal and/or write (angry) letters but DO NOT send! - Learn Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) with a practitioner. - Keep in mind that perfectionism is NOT the answer. - Stay present and “don’t borrow worry.” - Let “it” go and smile. • Eileen Lichtenstein balanceandpower.com

A Gluten-Free PASSover by Dr. Deborah Genin A gluten-free diet is one of the healthiest ways to eat, so if you eat healthy all year round, than modifying it for Passover shouldn’t be that hard to do. The symptoms of gluten intolerance are so common among our society, that they are often overlooked by doctors causing sufferers to assume they should “live with” their discomfort. Finding out you have a gluten sensitivity is extremely beneficial for those suffering from digestive problems, ADHD, acne, weight gain, depression and fatigue, to name a 22

few. Changing to an entirely new diet can be frustrating for some, but luckily for those who celebrate Passover, it might not be so difficult after all. Companies are now making gluten free Passover products, free of wheat, rye, barley, spelt and oats. Gluten free Matzo can be ordered online and there are wonderful Passover recipes all over the Internet. Don’t forget, eating glutenfree means that you can still have potatoes, vegetables, fruits, eggs, meat, milk and anything that doesn’t contain flour. Use this opportunity to choose healthier, whole foods,

such as raw vegetables and fruits, and stay away from simple carbohydrates like sweets and baked goods. And if you do have a sweet tooth, then there are many flourless chocolate cake recipes to choose from and of course, macaroons, a Passover favorite. SPRING CLEANSING WITH BENTONITE CLAY by Colleen Simon When we think about spring we relate it to Easter, Passover, flowers for the garden, and spring cleaning, but how many of us think about refreshing and renewing our bodies? “In a world where dietary choices are poor, environmental pollution is heavy, stress levels are high and exercise is often a last priority, internal cleansing is more important than ever for optimal health.” –Dr. Bernard Jensen For help in cleansing your body, use Bentonite clay, which has long been used to detox the body and cleanse the colon. It is useful for detoxing the body because the clay absorbs harmful toxins found in the intestinal tract and colon. Bentonite clay contains a negative charge, while the toxins in our bodies contain positive charges. The clay attracts toxins allowing them

to be easily pushed out of the body during a detox or colon cleanse. The clay absorbs pesticides, bacteria, pathogens, environmental or dietary toxins and even parasites located within the gastrointestinal tract. Other internal uses include: liver detoxification, neutralizing stomach ailments from ulcers and acid reflux, balancing pH levels, and increasing absorption of vitamins and nutrients. By removing accumulated toxins, your body should experience an increase in energy and relief from symptoms such as constipation and bloating. Consuming 1-2 ounces per day can help to alkalize, balance and revitalize your entire body. Bentonite clay can also be used externally to clear up acne, rashes and other skin problems. Applying the clay to the skin helps detox the pores, leading to healthier skin without blemishes. It also helps with eczema, psoriasis, wart removal, toenail fungus, and heals cuts, abrasions, burns, aching joints, bug bites, poison ivy, oak, shingles, and much more. Don’t overlook this natural product that offers so many great health benefits. • Colleen Simon Health Hutt Inc. 631-615-2179 healthhuttinc.com

IS IT SOMEDAY YET? by Tami Racaniello Does your week run from Someday to Someday, instead of Sunday to Saturday? There was a time when every day was Someday to me. As a caregiver of a parent, wife, a mom of two kids, active PTA parent and community volunteer, my health and my needs took a back burner to everything and everyone else. “I need to exercise and eat better, but I can’t right now… too busy.” “I should really go for a checkup, but there’s so much going on, it has to wait.” Sound familiar? Newsflash… It’s always 24

something, and there will always be something, unless you choose otherwise. Making YOU a priority is not an easy thing to do. I was taking the world upon my shoulders, feeling resentful of my situation, stressed and depressed. My health was greatly affected, and it no longer was Someday. When I postponed a doctor appointment for my mom, to make an appointment for me, I felt so guilty. I realized after my appointment that it was necessary and important to take care of myself. I learned to listen to my needs and my body.

Most importantly, I let the people around me know what those needs were, and I learned to embrace the word, “No”, and phrases such as “I’d love to help, but not at this moment. Is there something I can be of help with later?” My stress level dropped, and my headaches started to become less frequent. I also started to take control of my health, and make better food choices. Honoring my needs made me feel empowered, instead of feeling like a victim. • Tami Racaniello It’s Time To Get Fit joinus@itstimetogetfit.com

Spring Clean Your Diet by Jo Ann Bellistri After a long winter, our bodies need spring cleaning just as much as our cluttered homes and leaf-strewn yards do. Spring is nature’s cleansing time, a time of repair and renewal. Spring showers wash away winter’s damage and make room for fresh new growth. Now is the perfect time to lighten up our diets and embrace spring’s colorful and nutritious harvest. Choosing foods that are in-season makes sense because that is what nature intended. When you eat foods that are in-season, preferably locally grown, you get the benefits of freshness and enhanced flavor. Spring brings a beautiful bounty of cleansing and detoxifying foods. It is almost impossible to eat 100% in-season, but adding some spring foods into your diet will crowd out the heavier winter comfort foods, and soon you’ll feel lighter and have more energy. To find out what is available and in season in your area, go to www. localharvest.org and shop farmers’ markets whenever possible to get the best of the season. Here are five great spring detoxifiers: 1. Asparagus 2. Alfalfa sprouts 3. Greens (spinach, kale, Swiss chard, dandelions, mustard greens) 4. Green beans 5. Endive

DeDimone

by Maryann DeSimone As I absorbed the look of elation from the woman leaving the fertility doctor’s examining room, I knew instantly she had been successful; she was pregnant. Emotions overtook me as the results of my earlier fertility treatments resurfaced. The repeated failures at not becoming pregnant had weighed heavy on my heart, my soul, my very being. I never started my third round of fertility treatments that day. Instead, I went home knowing I could not bear to hear another “No”. For over a year, I was in mourning. Not only was my dream of motherhood shattered, so was that of Robert’s. I loved my husband dearly and I cannot begin to explain the pain I felt knowing that I could not fulfill his childhood dream of being a father. We were married at Oheka Castle, honeymooned in South Africa, bought a home in Huntington, and even rescued a four-month old Vizssla named Jake. Life was great! Robert had given me so much joy. He made my dreams come true and I wanted to do the same for him. So life went on. We began renovating our home. Robert and two friends started a film company out of Florida and while my business was growing, we got another puppy! We tried to accept the fact that parenthood was not in our future, but often on Monday mornings as Robert left for another workweek, we both found ourselves in tears. When he came home the discussion would start again. “What was next for us, what would be our legacy, what would we leave behind, did we want to adopt?” At one point Robert was not open to it and at this point I was not. After almost two years of this we got “crispy” as Robert would call it. He came home one weekend and we were sitting out back catching up and (this is one of this moments I remember vividly) he said, “Honey I need to ask you a question.” He wanted to talk about adopting. “I will ask you this one question and then I promise I will never bring it up again.” His question, “If we were 80 years old looking back what would you say?” I began to cry instantly, I knew I wanted to be a Mom! Today we have three healthy, intelligent, caring, beautiful daughters that are the apple of Robert’s eye and the joy of my life. They do not carry the genetic make up of Robert or me, but they carry the essence of our love! Journey to mother hood

WARNING SIGNS by Hillary Call Self-injurers come from all walks of life and economic brackets. The incidence of self-injury is about the same as that of eating disorders and, similarly, is highly stigmatized. Few talk about it and those who selfinjure are adept at hiding scars, burns and bruises. The typical age of onset is between ages 14-16. Those who practice self-injury use it as an unhealthy coping mechanism, to distract themselves from depression, anxiety, guilt, loss, etc. Sometimes people cut in order to “feel a feeling” or re-engage with reality, since cutters are known to have a history of dissociation. Also, self-injury releases endorphins into the bloodstream making it dangerously addictive. The danger is that a person may accidentally injure him- or herself fatally because they develop a tolerance as they self-injure repeatedly. Sufferers find they have to hurt themselves more intensely (cutting deeper, for example) and more often to get that same level of relief. The longer the underlying issue goes unaddressed, the more at-risk the person becomes for suicide. Therapy has proven to be very effective in treating people who self-injure. Methods include substituting harm for intense sensations that can safely mimic the pain of self-injury: snapping a rubber band on your wrist, hard; holding an ice cube on the area that you want to harm or sprinting until you’re out of breath. The confidential LICC Hotlines can point you in the right direction. Call (516) 679-1111 or visit LongIslandCrisisCenter.org.

Dear Suzanne: My fiancée and I have been dating for three years, our wedding date is July 14th and with all the stress, we have been fighting and not getting along. He does not seem to care about all of the work I have done for this wedding and I don’t feel close to him anymore. Should I call off the wedding or is this my fault? Please help me Suzanne I don’t know what to do! Lisa G. Woodbury, NY Dear Lisa: This could be one of the most wonderful times in your life. People are getting so wrapped up in the “wedding” that they are forgetting the very reasons why they are having this celebration to begin with. Let’s try and remember: a marriage is when two people fall in love, and want to share their lives together. It is a party to celebrate your love and union. Who cares about the food, limos and gifts? If your relationship takes a hit from the stress of the wedding and “wedding crazies” turn you into a bridezilla, your fiancé may see a side of you that is really ugly. Take a breath, calm down, erase your busy schedule and spend time doing what is most important: shower your fiancé with love, attention, appreciation and incredible sex! Get the connection back, remind yourselves “why” you got involved and find the love and intimacy again. Time for yourselves and not dealing with the wedding all of the time is the key to a balanced relationship. After all, if you handle this wedding with balance your marriage will follow, if not you increase your odds for a divorce. Relax-Sit Back-Take Time OffEnjoy Each Other! interior Design by Joseph Del Percio

Visions... The driving force behind today’s design seems to be a Do-It-Yourself mentality that results in a quick fix. For designers dedicated to the art of design these solutions ignore the beauty and utility that results from fine design. The goal of this magazine will be to expose the reader to creative design and the designers who are capable of executing it.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

w

Joseph Del Percio

hat is the function of an interior designer? To transform a home, a room, a space into the best possible interpretation of a client’s vision. With the greatest consideration placed on their lives and lifestyle, the experience and result will be interesting and rewarding for everyone. While many designers feel that the most beautiful projects are those which have the least amount of client involvement, the most success and satisfying results are gained by involving the client in every aspect of design. All design is a collaborative effort and by extracting the ideas and opinions from the client, with a gentle course correction and an inconspicuous eye on editing, the finished project will usually benefit from their specific insight. The designer’s influence, like a fingerprint on a lens, is an everpresent filter through which the big picture is brought into view. This home is a perfect example of how the exquisite taste and generous hearts of the clients greatly enhance both the design and the process. From the moment of inception their focus, with unwavering trust in the designer, was to bring the vision of “An Elegant Cottage” into fruition. Using a mix of antiques, and new and repurposed furnishings, and a warm, cheerful palette. The overall home is completely suited to the client’s lifestyle and aesthetic.

the art of FINE

DESIGN

Claudia Dowling During the last decade I have observed a definite deterioration of respect and appreciation for quality interior designers and a disregard for fine design. Whether you live in a castle or a modest home, your surroundings are key to your comfort and well being. The selection of good quality pieces has been replaced with low quality “disposable” imported furniture that has a 2- 5 year life span. I now see an awareness after 10 years of the futility of these purchases and a return to some of the finer products coming into play. Supporting and enjoying the high quality American and European furniture is once again becoming fashionable. Less and less “do it yourself” projects are appealing and a finer quality of design is appreciated.

Located in the heart of Huntington Village, our 5,000 sq. foot showroom features fine American and European furnishings. From classic to contemporary, our staff will help you choose home decor that fits your individual taste and needs. We will assist you in creating spaces that complement your lifestyle. Stop in and let us help you create inspiring rooms. 6

A small or large project can be greatly enhanced by a professional interior designer with experience and knowledge. A good designer will work with items you have that will enhance the areas and add great colors and accessories. My advice would be to interview a few recommended designers, discuss their design fees and view their portfolios to find just the right fit. Once this is accomplished, the consumer will be amazed at the results as progress is made. A lasting investment will be created to come home to and enjoy with friends and family.

Seatuck Environmental Association, Inc. is a not-for-profit, member-supported, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting the conservation of Long Island wildlife and the environment. Seatuck’s volunteer Board of Directors and professional staff work together closely to advance the organization’s mission through research, advocacy and education. Seatuck conducts various “citizen science” research projects to monitor birds, horseshoe crabs and other local wildlife species. The organization is also at the forefront of efforts to protect local ecosystems and restore wildlife habitat, including work to open Long Island’s coastal tributaries to migrating river herring, an important prey species that helps sustain our coastal ecosystem. But in recent years, Seatuck has focused primarily on expanding its educational offerings. Today, the organization can boast that it is one of Long Island’s leading providers of natural history programming. In 2010, Seatuck opened the Suffolk County Environmental Center through a partnership with the Suffolk County Parks Department. This public facility, located on the 70-acre Scully Estate near the Great South Bay in Islip, is the centerpiece of Seatuck’s educational effort. It hosts thousands of people every year for self-guided exploration and for public and private nature programs. The facility offers something for everyone, from pre-school adventures to family nature walks to expert lectures. Over the next five years, as Seatuck continues to grown into one of the leading conservation organizations in the region, it will expand its research and advocacy efforts and especially its work to help people experience, understand and protect Long Island’s wonderful environmental and wildlife resources. HOME AND GARDEN

PreParing Your Home for Sale by Lisa Albinowski Whether you are sprucing up your home as a spring cleaning ritual, or preparing your home for sale, there are some tried and true tips to help you gain the most from your efforts. In fact, some of the most important fix-up projects a homeowner can perform may be accomplished on little more than elbow grease, and they can help speed the sale of your home. A thorough cleaning, a fresh coat of paint, and yard grooming are the ABC’s of preparing for a sale. First impressions are important and a neat, clean look gives a good first impression to buyers. If you invest some money to improve your home’s presentation, start with the most cost-effective projects and remember to keep a journal of jobs and receipts. Home improvement costs are often deductible Some hints: • Replace broken gutters and shutters. • New paint indoors or out is usually a good way to spruce up the home. (pick neutral colors) • New floor coverings (in neutral shades) on kitchen and bathroom floors may be another affordable investment which can speed a sale by appealing to buyers’ desire for a property that is ‘ready to move into,’ particularly if the

current style of colors are dated. • Hardwood floors are a plus. If you have hardwood floors under the present floor covering, consider removing it especially if the carpet is worn. • Repair broken woodwork, loose planks, and creaky stairs. Buyers don’t want a home that needs structural repairs. • Spruce up the yard both front and back, clean up winter debris, cut the lawn, add some fresh mulch & flowers to flower beds. • Bathroom and kitchen up-grades generally help appreciation, not all home additions will add value to the property - other than that value which you personally enjoy. Not everyone wants a swimming pool it could be a safety hazard for young children. A new deck however should recoup its installment costs. Talk to your REALTOR® about the improvements most appropriate in current market conditions and you will speed up the sale of your home. • Lisa Albinowski SRES, CBR

herbs and edibles by Mary Rosenvinge Gardeners, get ready for a bountiful spring ahead! April showers tend to make the ground softer for the home gardener to begin planting for enjoyment all through the warmer weather. This year consider adding some edibles to your garden. Many varieties can even be grown in pots on a patio or deck (just be sure to give them enough water – potted plants dry out quickly). Who doesn’t love a freshly picked tomato still warm from the sun? like basil, cilantro, rosemary, dill and parsley are all wonderful to have on hand and some might even reseed themselves next year. Perennial herbs to consider for your garden that are both beautiful when in bloom and tasty all season are thyme, chives, lavender, and sage. For best flavor, don’t fertilize or overwater any herbs. Other edible choices can be ornamental too. Nasturtium seeds are easy to plant in spring soil. They grow into big beautiful bushy vines that can climb on fences and are covered with wonderful red, orange and yellow flowers (don’t fertilize these or you’ll only get leaves). All parts of the plant are edible and delicious. They lend a wonderful peppery flavor and beauty to salads, soups and pastas. • Mary Rosenvinge

HOME AND GARDEN donate your scapbook items by Diana Gaizo With spring just around the corner, it is a good time to organize your scrapbook supplies. There are many products out there that will help you sort your supplies. If you really have a large stash of scrapbook supplies then get yourself some boxes and label them: KEEP, THROW AWAY and DONATE. The KEEP box should be used for those items that you know you will use. The THROW AWAY box is for all those items that you kept just in case even though you know you can’t/won’t use them. The DONATE box is for items that are still good but you’ll never use and just take up space. There are many places on Long Island that will gladly take your donations. Many schools now have Scrapbook Clubs. The Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk Country has a Bereavement Department that could always use donations. If you don’t know where to begin, start by first sorting by color. Put all your cardstock in color order. Then, put all your pattern papers in color order. Next go to your embellishments

and sort them. Take your pattern papers and sort them within their color by stripes, floral, large pattern, etc. If you have items that are theme specific then sort those separately. Once you are organized make sure you label everything so you will always know where to go to get just the right thing! • Diana Gaizo Not Just Scrap notjustscrap.com

BUYING IN A DISTRESSED MARKET by Rosemarie Kluepfel Foreclosures, short sales, REOs: buying a home seems more confusing than ever. What does it all mean? Foreclosure occurs when a lender issues a notice of default usually, for unpaid payments. If the homeowner is unable to make up the back payments, the lender seeks to have a public auction to recoup monies due. Foreclosures are often as is and without a home inspection to detect possible flaws like termites, mold, water damage, non working heating systems, etc…You may have bought more than you bargained for. A short sale occurs when the lender agrees to accept less than the amount owned on a property. It is an option many distressed homeowners will choose to avoid foreclosure. Since the homeowner is not receiving any monies, the negotiations are done primarily with the lender. Short sales can take months to close since the lender needs to accept the bid and the price the house is listed for may not be near what the lender is willing to accept as the selling price. Remember, the lender’s goal

is to get as close to market value as possible so your offer may not be accepted even after weeks of waiting. REOs (Real Estate Owned) are properties acquired by the lender through foreclosure auction. When no one at the public auction makes a bid high enough to cover the amount owed on the property, the lender ends up owning it. This time the lender is the owner so negotiations may also be time consuming. When considering buying one of these homes, do your homework. Just because the lender will take less than the amount owned on the property doesn’t mean they will take less than market value. Understand what you are bidding on. Speak to a real estate agent with experience in distressed properties, ask your mortgage specialist about the various loan products available and consider all your options carefully. Home prices have fallen considerably over the last few years and mortgage rates are at historic lows so there may never be a better time to own. • Rosemarie Kluepfel Rosemariek@Fairwaymc.com NYS Licensed Mortgage Specialist Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp. 631-881-5110

BUSINESS & FINANCE How Patterns of Your MoneY Making Decisions are DeterMineD at earlY stages in Your life by Linda E. Katz, CFP®, CDFA™ Have you ever reflected on some of the financial decisions you have made in your life and thought, “What was I thinking?” Often, the thought processes that go into money choices are driven by internal forces. These forces have long been established by our unique conditioning to money from the time we were very young. The truth is, each of us has our own particular style when it comes to handing money. Let’s call it “money personality”. Just as each of us has our own personality when it comes to getting along with others-some of us may be calm and laid back, others a bit more intense and competitive-each of us has our own personality when it comes to “getting along” with our money too. The particular way you think about money, the extent to which you pay attention to and care for your money, and, of course, the manner in which you spend and save your money all defines your “money personality”. One of the most important things to consider about personalitywhether it be our money personality or the way we get along with others-is the lasting quality of personality. Unlike a mood or feeling, personality tends to stay about the same over the course of a person’s lifetime through habits we have practiced over and over again.

Where does money personality come from? While we’re growing up, our attitudes toward money are shaped mostly by what we learn and see from our parents along with other adults in our environment, our peers, and from role models through the television and movies. Factors such as whether you were brought up in a family where money was plentiful or scarce, where money was talked about openly or discussed only behind closed doors, or in an environment where having money or not having money made you feel proud or ashamed combined to shape your money personality-the one that continues to determine how you manage your finances now. For example, being raised with the perception that everyone else seemed to have more money than you can lead to feelings of deprivation and then to overspending as an adult. People who are raised in an environment where money is discussed openly often become careful caretakers of their cash realizing early on that money is a tool to be utilized effectively. We can fast forward to today’s complex economy that has seen tremendous volatility in personal wealth due to poor investment results, too much personal debt and poor money management in general. Many of the financial decisions that led individuals to take on too much risk with their money can be traced to their money personality. Understanding your own money personality can lead to making better choices in your financial life. • Linda E. GROW YOUR BUSINESS! If you don’t accept Credit Cards, you are losing Business.

SAFE RIDING by Michele Martin With spring around the corner motorcyclists are gearing up to put their bikes on the road. Choosing the right insurance coverage is as important as buying the right bike. It should fit your lifestyle and needs. In 2006, according to US Motorcycle Market Industry Research and Statistics, there were over 6 million motorcycles registered that year in the US with over 200,000 registered in New York alone. Twelve percent (12 %) of those registered motorcyclists are now women. Many motorcyclists put themselves in a very precarious financial situation because they don’t understand the ins and outs of motorcycle insurance. Motorcycle insurance does not provide the same coverages as your standard automobile insurance policy. Many bikers believe that they have full coverage on their policy when they do not. No Fault coverage (Personal Injury Protection – medical) is not available in the State of New York by any insurance company. What does that mean in layman terms? Motorcycles are exempt from the definition of a motor vehicle under NY State’s No Fault Law. Therefore, if you do not carry separate Health Insurance benefits on your own or through your employment and you are injured in an accident while riding a motorcycle you will have no coverage for your injuries or lost wages. Before you are ready to hit the road contact your Agent or Broker with any questions or concerns you may have in regards to your policy and coverages available. Safe riding! • Michele Martin 631-261-4200 Michele M. Martin Insurance Agency, Inc.

spring clean your life by Michael D. Angiulo, Esq It’s that time of year again when the weather starts to get warm and the list of things to do around the house starts to get long, but before you begin cleaning out the attic and washing windows you might want to dust off that old Will. You took the time to sit with a lawyer and prepare a Last Will & Testament, but that doesn’t mean you’re covered. A Will can’t just sit in the drawer gathering dust; it needs a periodic review to make sure it will still do what you want. State laws change and sometimes those new laws impact your estate planning documents. For example, New York State changed the statutory form for a Power of Attorney in 2010 so older POA’s should be reviewed to make sure they are adequate for your situation. Also you should keep in mind that different states have different legal requirements for making a Will, so if you’ve moved recently you want to have any attorney review your documents and make sure it is in accordance with New York State laws. Perhaps your Will names beneficiaries or executors

who are already deceased. This can create a big problem when it comes time to probate your Will. We had a case where, not only did the executor predecease our client, so did all her beneficiaries. It took years of work and hearings at the Surrogates Court to get these assets to the decedent’s family, a process that could have been avoided by a simple update to her Will. A new addition to your family also means a new addition to your Will. Don’t you want to provide for guardians and trustees for them if something should happen to you? Maybe you have gotten married, or divorced, since the time you created your documents, or maybe you have never created estate-planning documents because you thought you didn’t need them. The only constant thing in life is change and it isn’t unreasonable to think that your wishes or circumstances have changed too. • Michael D. Angiulo, Esq. is an estate-planning and elder law attorney and owner of Michael Angiulo & Associates, LLC in Syosset 516-921-2077 michaelangiulo.com

Long Island Residents Beware: Behind Your Back . . .

“ARe TheY ABOuT TO IncReASe YOuR PRIceS?” Huntington, NY: “I still have trouble believing how much I was overpaying. And to think, this time last year I was so convinced I had such a great deal.” “I should have been paying closer attention to the price increases.” I was just about to sit down to dinner, when I was interrupted by a phone call from a determined salesman. He started off the conversation by asking me an interesting question. “Do you know why most people overpay for their life insurance?” “The bottom line is most busy people buy a policy, throw it in a drawer and forget about it.” “But since you’ve been too busy to review your coverage you’ve probably never noticed the scheduled price increases as you get older.” In fact, when I stopped to think about it, I was curious to know if I had fallen into the same trap by not reviewing my own coverage. To tell you the truth, I had no idea what I was paying. Let alone, how much my rates were increasing as I got older. But instead of being stubborn, I dug out my policy and was shocked

to find my prices had started to skyrocket. O.K.! It was obvious I needed to deal with this problem. But here’s the catch. If I make a change and buy a new policy, I’ll end up being in the same boat again a year or two from now. But, what else is there to do? “At last, an easy way without the hassle!” I read an article in a financial magazine about some guy who cut his term life insurance cost in half. Yeah, right! Give me a break. But being curious, I called the 800# to receive a copy of the free report mentioned in the article. As much as I hate answering machines, I was happy to listen to a recorded message instead of having to speak with a salesman. When the report came. . . “I finally understood what I, (and everyone else) was doing wrong!” The report explained that the most costly mistake people make when buying life insurance is they fail to get level rates. In fact, I found out that there are many quality insurance companies that specialize in offering level price

The Myth Of The Silent Partner by Lisa Renee Pomerantz Entrepreneurs often look to relatives or acquaintances to help finance start-up costs, with the expectation that they will be “silent partners” in the business. Understandably, the investors are anxious to protect their investment. This can lead to conflict between the “silent partner” and the “sweat equity partner”, who is contributing his or her time and efforts. To minimize such conflict, the parties should enter into a written agreement ahead of time specifying their respective roles in the business. The agreement should address the following issues concerning the silent partner’s role: How much capital must be contributed to the business? Are any of the capital contribution obligations conditioned on the achievement of milestones? Are any

policies. Some even have rates that remain the same for 10, 15 or 20 years. However, finding these type policies is not always easy. There are over 1,893 companies who sell life insurance. So even if you spend hours of your valuable time researching, you would probably drive yourself crazy trying to make sense of it all. Fortunately, this report identifies an insurance company that does offer great prices, level rates and excellent quality. All you have to do is leave your date of birth and coverage amount on the answering machine. “Two thumbs up!” “If you want to avoid overpaying for your life insurance, I advise you to call the number below. Get a copy of this eye-opening report for yourself.” “To get your free report call toll free, 1-800-274-4453 24 hours a day, for a free recorded message. There is no charge for this service. And most importantly there is no one on the telephone to hassle you.” “I must say it’s refreshing to see that someone is finally giving the average consumer the scoop about life insurance prices.” The preceding story is a dramatization of every day frustrations experienced by many consumers.

payments for the benefit of the business to be treated as loans or reimbursable expenses? What types of expenditures or operating decisions require consultation with or concurrence by the silent partner? Similarly, certain questions should be addressed regarding the role of the managing partner; what commitment of time and effort is required? Will the managing partner receive a salary, commissions or other compensation for his or her services in addition to his shares in the company? What intellectual property created by the managing partner must be assigned to the business? The agreement should also specify mechanisms for resolving disputes and governing withdrawal of the participants in the event those disputes cannot be resolved. • Lisa Renee Pomerantz Attorney At Law 631-244-1482 Lisapom.com april 2012

THE SIGNS OF SPRING by Jungle Bob AHHH Spring! Although this winter was one of the mildest on record, the thought of spring conjures up many images, smells and sounds. After a long hard winter that red- red robin is a sight for frozen eyes to many and a sign of things to come, for others the beautiful colors of crocus’ plants emerging while the last of the snow melts away is the sign of spring for sure. But for me, it is the shrill call of the Spring Peeper, a tiny little frog native to Long Island that tells me for sure spring has arrived! At less than an inch in size, these little amphibians can really turn up the volume as any of you who live near a wetland and small pond can attest. The decibel level of a group of frogs can be almost deafening at night, particularly after an evening shower. Well, this truly is nature calling as these sounds are mating calls emitted only by male frogs, who fill up their vocal sacs with air, like little balloons and then push it through their vocal chords to obtain the amazing pitch we hear each spring. The bigger the vocal sac, the louder the sound, and the more a male frog has a chance at romance! • Jungle Bob Jungle Bob’s Reptile World 631-737-6474 junglebobsreptileworld.com

What Would your pet do for a liv-a-little? by Bettie Hamilton Appearing on QVC to talk about Halo’s Liv-A-Littles protein treats was a wonderful experience. To the delight of all in attendance the treats were enthusiastically gobbled up by happy dogs for all viewers to see. You can hear about what a great and healthy treat these are but nothing says it better than the dogs and cats that twirl, dance and beg for just one more. Why are these protein treats so special? Pure and simple – Liv-ALittles® are made from 100% chicken breast, beef or wild salmon yielding a natural treat that’s high in protein. These freeze dried morsels burst with flavor when mixed with silva. Once moistened, the pieces plump up, tempting the taste buds of even the most finicky pets. Protein is naturally craved by dogs and cats. Unlike typical biscuits, chewy treats and cookies, freeze dried protein treats are low in fat, carbohydrates and fiber. They contain no artificial colors, preservatives, added sugar, wheat, corn or other ingredients that add extra calories. These versatile treats can be crumbled and sprinkled on food for added flavor or mixed in water to encourage hydration on warm days. Equally loved by both dogs and cats Liv-A- Littles protein treats are a great household staple that go a long way to show pets how much you care. Conveniently packaged in re-sealable jars they can be found at Whole Foods, PETCO, Independent Pet Stores and QVC. • Bettie Hamilton Director of Product Development Halo Purely for Pets halopets.com

SpriNGtiMe aNd your pet by Jodi Record HEALTH Easter is known for ‘Easter Eggs’. After all, who doesn’t love that melt-in-your-mouth milk chocolate gold? But while chocolate is the way to a woman’s heart; it can also be a way to the veterinarian, or worse, for your pet. Chocolate contains ingredients that are toxic to dogs and cats, and if ingested can cause nausea and vomiting, seizures, increased blood pressure, and worstcase scenario – death! So while you’re relishing that once-a-year indulgence, be sure to store those chocolaty delights well out of reach of Fluffy and Fido and avoid an unnecessary trip to the emergency room this Easter. FASHION You’re walking down the street and you see a cute little ball of fur attached to a leash heading towards you. You bend down to say hello and you ask the human attached to the other end what kind of dog this is. The response you get is a name like Morkie, Schnoodle, Peekapoo, Puggle or Labradoodle. You’ve

never heard of any of these breeds, but in fact they are the hottest new fashion trend in pets, and their creation has coined a new catch phrase –the ‘designer dog’. So what is a designer dog? Essentially a ‘designer dog’ is a mixed breed, AKA the good old American mutt! While the usual mutt is normally a Heinz 57 variety, ‘designer dogs’ are created by mixing two purebreds i.e. a Morkie is a Maltese and Yorkie mix, a Schnoodle is Schnauzer and Poodle mix and a Puggle is a Pug and Beagle mix. Some are paying big bucks for their mixed breed mate, all the while thinking that they just added a pedigree to their family. There’s a lesson to be learned in all of this – if you can’t find it on the AKC’s list of registered breeds, then it’s likely your little friend is not a purebred at all. Remember, if you’re considering adding a four-legged companion to your family, adoption is the best option. STRONG ISLAND WOMAN

Kristine Fitzpatrick and Miracle league by Hillary Call Confined to a wheelchair, five-year-old Santo – giddy with the thrill of playing baseball, took his first steps walking the bases at a recent game held by the Miracle League of Long Island. When 12-year-old Joshua saw himself on the front cover of a Northport newspaper posing with newfound friends from St. John’s University baseball team, he shouted out an excited “THANK YOU!” It was the first time Joshua’s parents had heard him speak. “Something amazing happens every week,” said Kristine Fitzpatrick, president of the Miracle League of Long Island, a baseball league for special needs children and adults. The Miracle League works with town and city governments to build baseball fields that are adapted for special needs players. These fields have smooth playing fields – no grass to slow down a wheelchair – and are fully accessible. Every child, no matter his or her level of ability, can participate. And oh they want to! Kristine built the league in 2010 with the help of the Town of Brookhaven. Parks Commissioner Ed Morris

generously provided an existing handicap field that was not being used and supplied uniforms for their first year. Every Saturday during spring/summer games are played on this Miracle League Field, located at 55 South Bicycle Path in Selden. Games are free for all players. Aramark even supplies the hot dogs. Since its beginnings, the Miracle League of Long Island has grown to 120 players. It’s an important resource for the kids and also their parents, who can connect with other families going through similar experiences. The Long Island chapter is one of 100 similar leagues across the country. “There aren’t enough fields for children with disabilities,” said Kristine. “How can a child in a wheelchair or a walker navigate muddy fields after it rains?” “I feel blessed to have this opportunity with the Miracle League,” she continued. “For me it was something that was meant to be. I’ve never had that feeling before, that I’ve found my mission.” Finding that mission has been a long, hard road, but Kristine is a fighter. She’s approaching her 20-year anniversary of being (ovarian) cancer-free. When she was going through chemotherapy her doctors dismissed the possibility of her having children. For Kristine that was almost an invitation to try, and sure enough she became pregnant two years after her last treatment. With even more love in her heart to give, Kristine also adopted another baby boy. The chemo itself was experimental but Kristine was

determined to give it a try. “If there was a chance I could prove this treatment was effective then maybe I could save another woman’s life,” she said. She first learned of the Miracle League several years ago when she was asked to serve on the Board in Westchester. “After the first minute of seeing what the Miracle League did for these kids I fell in love. I had to bring it to Long Island,” she said. Kristine is determined to open five new fields in five years across the Island. Critical to the ongoing success of the Miracle League are “buddies,” volunteers who help the kids have a successful game. Buddies assist players at bat, walk the bases or simply cheer them on. They create a judgmentfree zone and a fun, team environment. Every week someone from the community joins the game. The fire department will come and play ball with the kids, or the St. John’s University baseball team, or they’ll host a carnival. This year the season starts May 5. Perhaps you or someone you know has a child with disabilities, or you want to do something special for wonderful kids. Volunteer as a buddy, bring your team at work to a game or ask your community leaders to participate. It’s a great place to be on a Saturday. Registration for the Miracle League is April 21 at Sports Authority 2110 Nesconset Highway, Stony Brook 11790 http://mllongisland.com/. april 2012

FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS THE BEAT OF LONG ISLAND

Find your perFect mate online by Sara Fingerman Fifteen years ago, “ You’ve got Mail” used to be the most powerful words on the web. Think Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in a blockbuster hit about a small bookstore owner and the builder of a bookstore conglomerate. These two star -crossed individuals fell in love with each others soul even without realizing who they really were over the internet. Today, you have Tweets, Facebook , Skype and so on. Not to mention Jdate, Christian Singles, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish, Match.com, ElitesinglesLI.com, and this list goes on and on. In the digital world of today, there are plenty of choices when it comes to online dating. Some sites are even free! Remember when posting an online profile make sure to have an up to date picture. The photograph should represent a happy smiling carefree you! Do not post a picture that is old or doesn’t represent the way you look now. Wouldn’t you want the same in return? When filing out the dating profile, be honest and put pride into what you write. This is the one chance to brag about accomplishments, ambitions and goals. Tell them what your favorite movie is, your astrological sign, if you’re a foodie or enjoy a good baseball game. Sharing

some common interests will help break the ice. When it comes to Internet dating, always be safe. Meet at a public place like a Starbucks. If you do choose a bar, keep your drinks to a two drink minimum. While you may be tempted to kiss on your first date, always remembers…. no matter how charming your date can be, he is a stranger. Last but not least, always remember to dress to impress. Throw on your favorite dress, or jeans with a cute top. Be yourself and have a great time. Not every date is going to be a connection, but each date should give you insight to what you want and don’t want in a partner. With all of the choices out in the universe be choosey! • Sara Fingerman Senior Account Director at Stanford Registries and marketing consultant for SV Aesthetics

reduce, reuse and recycling, one Beer can at a time by Brandi Shaw As Earth Day approaches this April 22nd, let’s all take a minute to consider reducing our carbon footprints. Sadly, buying a pair of black Manolos half a size too small doesn’t count. Lower gas use and emissions. Avoid running errands one at a time. Save them up until you have a million things to do. This used to be called procrastinating, now is called “Going Green”! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Switching from disposable products to reusable ones will eliminate tons of trash each year. Just about anything can be reused. If you save up enough soda cans, for example, you can 54

gemmagazineli.com

build an extension on the house. If you use beer cans you may be able to trick your husband into moving in to it. Run the dishwasher only when it’s full. Using it less often saves a lot of water and energy. I don’t run mine until I am eating my cereal out of a flowerpot with a measuring spoon while drinking my coffee from the bathroom cup. Mmm, minty. Exercise outdoors. Treadmills and stationary bikes burn watts along with calories. Walking or biking outside saves energy. But all that gasping for air does add CO2 to the atmosphere. That’s why I prefer sitting on the porch drinking Chardonnay. Shower less often. A typical shower can use 50 gallons of water. Skip a shower or two and save precious gallons. The odor may get you out of a few long, boring meetings too. If you are afraid your love life will suffer, cut your water use in half by showering with your partner. Who said going green couldn’t be fun? • Brandi Shaw enjoys writing and has published numerous articles on beauty, fashion and wellness

by Hillary Call Bon Bons Chocolatier is a paradise of mouthwatering chocolates, confections, candies and gifts – all handmade on premises by artisans who understand what it means to have a serious sweet tooth. Sitting at the helm of Long Island’s favorite candy emporium are mother-and-daughter team Mary Alice and Susannah Meinersman, who together have built Bon Bons into a successful business that’s maintained growth even in recent tough economic times. “Everything is made fresh, in small batches, and still fork-dipped by hand,” said Mary Alice of her popular gourmet chocolates, which fans can identify by their unique shapes and chocolate signature. Mary Alice was one of Bon Bons’ original chocolate dippers, signing on six months after the store opened in 1979. When the original owners decided to sell in 1984, she and her late husband Peter purchased Bon Bons, joined in 1987 by their daughter Susannah, making it a true family business. As vice president and store manager, Susannah designs enticing displays for the shop’s windows and instore. During an apprenticeship at La Maison du Chocolat in France she met chocolatier Eric Lobignat, who today is Bon Bons’ head candymaker. Customers remember when Bon Bons first opened its doors, as chocolates were fork-dipped in the shop’s front window. Today every chocolate is still made lovingly from scratch. Bon Bons has expanded to become a 4,200 square-foot chocolate mecca, featuring a glass-enclosed kitchen, a molding and wrapping room, a glass-enclosed chocolate hand-dipping station and an expansive retail showroom. “Small business is an area where women can really thrive and succeed, especially for those who are independent, work hard and have their own ideas,” Susannah said.

WOMEN IN THE ARTS

Olivia BOuler: Taking Flight by Frances McGarry Twelve-year-old Olivia Bouler first gained fame two years ago when in response to the BP Gulf oil spill, she offered her paintings to people who donated to the National Audubon Society. To date, she has created more than 500 paintings and raised more than $200,000 for the Audubon Society. She’s also published a book, lobbied on Capitol Hill for environmental reforms, and spoken to school children in different states and countries about her passion for animals. Olivia was honored for her work at the International Year of Youth Culmination Celebration at the United Nations, and was personally invited by President Obama to attend a holiday reception. She has traveled to Costa Rica to study bird wildlife in their natural habitat and her first gallery show is in the planning stages for this coming season. The arts have not only been the conduit through which she channels her energy and enthusiasm for her causes, but also a respite for coping with her emerging adolescence: “I’ve seen other kids who don’t have the arts and they turn to the wrong things . . . if they had considered taking [an art class] …. it would have saved them,” said Olivia. And it’s not even about being able to draw. “You just keep on going; just pick up that pencil and start writing. I can tell you there are brilliant writers [in my class], there are brilliant players, brilliant singers [who will] never be heard because they are so scared of doing a solo because they’re afraid of what people might think.” The arts have the capacity to instill courage for anyone who dares to accept the risk. It’s this secure sense of selfesteem that the arts have given to Olivia to pursue her dreams. Her “epiphany”, if you will, was the moment her parents put a pencil in her hand. She has 30,000 people who follow her on Facebook and is more determined than ever to do something really amazing for the arts and the environment: “We are like birds! We have to sing our song before our time goes out . . . we have to sing our songs NOW before it’s all gone.” “Go birds!” Contact Olivia at oliviabouler.net and facebook.com/oliviasbirds. • Frances McGarry, PhD francesmcgarry.com 56

THE BEAT OF LONG ISLAND

CELEBRATING PASSOVER by Sara Fingerman As a normal part of life, stress enables us to get through Passover is the major Jewish Spring Festival that commemorates the freedom of Israelites from Egyptian slavery. It is customary to have a Seder (dinner) to remember the story of what happened to the Jewish people all of those years ago. The Seder commences the first two nights of the holiday, which lasts for seven nights. For your Passover dinner instead of Gefilte fish why not Halibut and Salmon Terrine with Aioli and Fresh Grated Horseradish with Beets. Not up to cooking then why not have these delicious dishes catered by the experts: Neil Schumer and Myra Naseem of Elegant Eating, Smithtown NY ( 631-360-2211). Nothing beats their authentic Matzos Ball Soup or brisket. For dessert be sure to order their chocolate covered matzo squares and delicious macaroons. Create an excellent experience from the presentation of the Seder Plate to the food.

Their menu offers new twists on classic favorites. To make the story in your Passover Haggadah comes alive for your family use props. Get fake ice cubes for the hail, and plastic frogs for locust. This can help decorate the table and it will add fun for the kids to keep the story alive. Whether you are hosting the Seder Dinners, or are invited as a guest, sing songs, eat well and enjoy yourself. Have a happy and healthy Passover. • Sara Fingerman Senior Account Director at Stanford Registries and marketing consultant for SV Aesthetics

MAKE EVERYDAY THE “FIRST” DAY OF YOUR LIFE by Paula Klee Parish The one ingredient that enables you to have 365 chances every year to make your dreams come true… What’s the Ingredient? It’s Positive Expectancy and we all have it in our power to make it an integral part of our life. Positive Expectancy is all about “New Tomorrows” and the beautiful notion of starting fresh and starting over every day, any day. The simple reality of it all is that the world wakes up and the world goes to sleep. What happens in between for the most part plays out based on what choices we make all day. The choices could be as simple as deciding to sit on a bus instead of standing. You make decisions and choices all day long. Some work out in your favor and some don’t. Why not decide to have an attitude that you’re a good person and that you have the right to expect good things to happen to you and for you? It’s a 58

simple choice. It’s also a numbers game. Strengthen and adjust your positive expectancy attitude and your success percentage will go up. I promise you there’s no law, secular or religious, that says that you cannot expect great things to happen to you. Your past does not determine what your life will be or could be. A firm decision to choose positive expectancy will start you on a journey of success and happiness. Patience and persistence will be the

vehicles that get you to the finish line. You have the right to expect great things and that you’ll have great things happen to you. You have the chance to start your life over 365 days per year. TRAVEL

take it to the extreme

Iceland by Carol Nucci Iceland is often called the island of “Fire and Ice”. Just a few years ago, Iceland held air travel to most of Europe at bay due the eruption of their volcano. Despite the bad press—Iceland is definitely worth a visit. The weather is actually quite temperate due to the oceans jet stream, but the winter winds can definitely whip around this island. Wearing layers is the order of the day and stopping into one of the many cafes for hot chocolate and delicious pastry certainly warms the soul. Even in the coldest months, it is the warmth of the Icelandic people that is so welcoming. Settled by the Vikings, Iceland is an island of extremes. During the 45- minute ride from the airport to the capital of Reykjavik, you pass through the rocky lava fields. At times you’ll think you landed on another planet! This area is home to the geo thermally heated “Blue Lagoon”. Go ahead, swim in the luminescent bubbly water and rub the white silt on your skin. It is 60

gemmagazineli.com

widely known to be rejuvenating. Iceland boasts a wide offering of accommodations, dining options and sightseeing, which include museums, nightlife and outdoor adventures. A long weekend with an easy nonstop flight takes you from your stressful life to the natural beauty in the middle of the North Atlantic. I traveled with five women who wanted a little adventure, as well as some pampering. If you can stay a few more days, hop a small plane and stay on the black sand beach in Hofn, a small village, which sits on the edge of a glacier, where two James Bond movies wereLa filmed. P’tite Long walks during the stark long winter nights enable you to see the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. I was changed forever—I will never gaze upon the night sky in the same way. From the craggy black lava to long winter nights with glistening frozen glaciers to the verdant green pastures of summer----take it all in! • Carol Nucci, Longtime Huntington resident and world traveler

INSPIRATION & MOTIVATION

NEw bEgINNINgS by Jean Summit-Riker Crocuses pop their heads up from once frozen earth, as birds chirp merrily in their search for twine and twigs which will become their new homes, and we feel the stirring of warm summer days filled with promises yet to come. Spring is a time of new beginnings. The changing season amplifies and defines our life. Yet so few of us pay attention to the new beginnings offered to us as the sun rises and presents us with a new day. A day should be filled with joy simply because it has been given to us as a gift, rather than one filled with drudgery because of the negative thoughts and beliefs we greet it with. Whether we know it or not, “thoughts are things.” They are little particles of energy that go into the universe and are aligned by the Law of Attraction to

manifest what comes into our life. Start noticing whether you are happy with what is coming into your life, and then reflect on what you spend your day thinking about. The choice to “choose” your thoughts is always yours, and each day we are presented with new beginnings and the opportunity to make a different choice. Last night I opened a fortune cookie that said, “The only limits to the possibilities in your life tomorrow are the “buts” you use today.” Choose wisely, Grasshopper, the choices you make today create your tomorrows. Yet never fear getting it wrong, for each day is a new beginning and an opportunity to create positive, empowering thoughts that make your heart sing and your spirit soar. • Jean Summit-Riker Hypnotist & Tranquility Based Life Coach 631-289-1371 tranquilitybasedlifecoaching.com

PEOPLE PAY FOR TRANSFORMATION NOT YOUR TIME by Alyse Parise I speak to many women in business who have health scares, financial difficulties and relationship troubles. Women entrepreneurs are certainly not exempt from challenges like these. How do you find the time to deal with everyday living, never mind the unexpected challenges that may come your way? One of the ways is to value your time. I don’t mean sleep less, and find more hours in the day. Recognize that your customers or clients pay for results; they don’t pay for your time! When your client buys your service or product, they do so to improve their profits, health, or beauty. They are paying for how well you can help them make the transformation or breakthrough they desire. Can you see how charging an hourly fee,

devalues your time? Your customers value your wisdom, expertise, insight and abilities. The more you step into valuing yourself, the more attractive you and the transformation you offer become and the more your clients will be willing to pay, regardless of how much time is involved. Shift the agreement to payment for results and your customers will understand what they are receiving for their money

and happily pay you more. How can you price your business offerings around the transformative results that you offer and not the time it takes to deliver the service? You have so much to give, and if you’re reacting to what you’re reading, take a deep breath, and consider how underpricing your services results in less time with your family, friends and yourself. You can reclaim time for selfcare when you embody your value, charge what you are worth, know your costs, easily describe the benefits and results that your customers receive, and believe in yourself. If you want specific steps, call me. • OnFire Alyse Parise LCSW, Psychotherapist and Certified Business Coach, 631-689-6272 alyseparise@poweroutcomes.com april 2012
