Guns, drugs & cash seized in dawn raid

By Ashley Geelan Monday, 1 August, 2022 Echo Taskforce detectives today seized a firearm, ammunition and cash as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged Middle Eastern organised crime syndicate.

Detectives raided a business in Airport West and residential property in Hillside at dawn. Investigators located a quantity of what is believed to be explosives, as well as a handgun, spear gun, boxes of ammunition of various calibres, cocaine, steroids and what appears to be about $100,000 cash. A 39-yearold Hillside man was arrested and has subsequently been charged with firearms, explosives, weapons and drug offences. He was bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court at a later date. Investigations into the syndicate remain ongoing.

Grants now open for 16 Days of Activism campaign

By Ashley Geelan Monday, 1 August, 2022 This year marks the thirtieth year of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence and Nillumbik is offering small grants for community projects to shine a spotlight on this year’s campaign.

The initiative aims to galvanise individuals, communities and organisations to address gender inequalities and eradicate violence against women and girls around the world. The campaign begins each year on 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and concludes on 10 December (International Human Rights Day). Nillumbik Mayor Frances Eyre said that Council is committed to preventing violence against women and promoting gender equality. “This is an important issue that affects many people, and unfortunately, Nillumbik is not immune to it either,” Councillor Eyre said. “In the year 2019-2020 there were 512 family violence incidents in our Shire, and intimate partner violence remains the greatest health risk factor for women aged 25-44.

There is no excuse for any type of violence or disrespect, and we need to work together to call it out,” she said. The grant funding can support – among a range of activities community programs, events and

public space activation to create unique, dynamic and inclusive local places, virtual events, arts and cultural initiatives. Whittlesea rolls out purple bins for glass recycling

bin in readiness for the new glass recycling service due to begin later this year. Close to 90,000 bins will soon make their way to all households that currently have a Council-provided rubbish and recycling bin, in line with the Victorian Government’s requirement of a standardised four-bin waste and recycling system for all Councils.

Bins will be delivered across August and September and residents are encouraged to start using the bin as soon as they receive it, ready for the first collection, which is due to begin in early October. Glass recycling bins will be collected once every four weeks, on the same day of the week as the regular bin collection.

Information will be sent to all households detailing collection days ahead of the first pick up.

Administrator Peita Duncan said that the addition of glass recycling bins would improve the overall quality of all the recycling that is collected, meaning more of it can be recycled and kept out of landfill. “Glass often breaks during collection and can get lodged into other recyclables, such as paper and cardboard, making it difficult to recycle. By separating glass in a different bin, we can remove this contaminant and turn your old glass bottles and jars into new bottles, or even road base.” “We know our community is committed to reducing waste and making this simple change to the way we recycle at home will make a big difference.”

Whittlesea has advanced to the SG Print & Paper Division 2 Women’s first semi-final after defeating the Fitzroy Stars by 12 points at the Whittlesea Showgrounds. Scores were level at three-quarter time before a three-goal to one final term from the Eagles ensured their path to the next stage, claiming a 5.6 (36) to 3.6 (24) win over the Stars. Both sides qualified for their first finals series in the senior women’s competition after finishing with six wins each in the home and away season. The Stars occupied the higher spot on the ladder only by percentage, so it was no surprise that this match was as close as it was. Neither side were able to make a real impact on the scoreboard in the early stages thanks to strong winds that made accurate kicking far from an easy task. The Fitzroy Stars looked the more likely of the two teams to get the first major of the day but could only muster

three behinds. They still took a twopoint lead heading into quarter time.

With the game starting to open up in the second term, Whittlesea capitalised as 18-year-old Jade Ventura found the big sticks to give her side the lead. The Eagles had all the ascendency in the term and were able to score a further three behinds, but against the run of play, the Stars’ Shania Austin Jones slotted home her seventh goal of the season to cut the deficit to just two points at the main break. As it was to start the first quarter, the third term was an arm wrestle with both sides playing a very contested brand of footy. The Stars, who were looking to continue their momentum from the second term, almost kicked the first score of the second half with a kick from long distance that trickled out of bounds.

It was Whittlesea however who drew first blood, extending their lead to eight points as a result of a second goal from Ventura. The Fitzroy Stars quickly bounced back, with Moorina Bonini’s snap at goal bringing her side’s deficit back to two points. It was also her first goal of the season.

Lisa Roper’s side continued to control the contest for the remainder of the term but struggled to convert their dominance into goals, scoring just two more behinds for the quarter. It meant the scores stood at 17 apiece at three quarter time, setting up a highly anticipated final term. The first major of the last quarter came just a couple of minutes into play when Stevie Hare kicked her first goal since May and as a result, the floodgates began to open for Whittlesea. Having mustered two goals for the first three quarters of the game, the Eagles kicked three goals in the space of three minutes, with Annette Carle getting on the board before Ventura kicked her third to extend their margin to beyond three goals. The quick burst of goals from Whittlesea didn’t bring the Stars down as they continued to push forward deep into the final quarter. But with each forward 50 entry came a sea of Whittlesea defenders who would swoop in and intercept their kicks, spearheaded by Chloe Best who was

the most prevalent defender of the day. Jessica Nannup did manage to kick the Stars third goal of the match but it was too little too late as Whittlesea celebrated their triumph in front of a healthy crowd at the Showgrounds.

Police are hoping to identify a man following an alleged serious assault on a 49-year-old Keilor man on the patio area of a Keilor Park Drive restaurant just after midnight on 8 July. Two men who were exiting the restaurant walked past the man before one of them returned to the victim. The unknown man, without provocation, then struck the Keilor man to the face causing him to lose consciousness. The victim suffered a shattered cheek requiring reconstructive surgery. The alleged offender is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, with light brown hair and a beard, and was wearing a white hooded-top and black pants. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact police.

By Contributed Monday, 1 August, 2022 On 1 August, 1992 the first edition of VicNews (The Victorian News) rolled of the press -well, actually a dot-matrix printer and lots of photocopying - was distrubuted throughout Montmorency, St Helena, Greensborough, Greenhills, Eltham, Eltham North, Lower Plenty, Apollo Parkways. Prior to this, Geelan had published the hand-made Geelan Globe newspaper in primary school using a mechanical typewriter, stencils and The Lettering Book.

VicNews was (and still is) officially registered as a newspaper and issued an ISSN even before the first edition rolled of the dot matrix colour printer.

As a 14-year-old future journalist, the propietor of Geelan Media, Ashley Geelan, loved newspapers. Anything to do with the media. Regular train trips to MacGills Newsagency in Melbourne to buy USA Today, Washington Post, London Times and many other international, regional and interstate newspapers whilst his friends went to Minotaurs comic book store. When Geelan was selling newspapers for Briar Hill Newsagency on the morning commute at the intersections of St Helena Road/Karingal Drive and Weidlich Road/Karingal Drive he would insert copies of VicNews into all the papers he was selling to passing commuters before heading off to secondary school. By late 1992, Geelan was using an AMIGA 2000HD+ computer's audio out connected to a 27MHz CB radio's MIC input to send data packets over the airwaves to friend's computers at the 'other end' who could then decode the packets with thier computers and read updated (text only) news reports. It's why VicNews had "monthly UPDATED newspaper" as an ad on the first edition's front page.

Within a few years, sending data packets between computers became mainstream with the advent of something called the 'internet', making VicNews Australia's first truly online newspaper.

Yep, it was VicNews, bought to you by a

14-year-old future journalist and CB radio operator that first published news online, beating even the ABC by two years. In between VicNews has come and gone, been revived again, done other projects, published under other names such as Kinglake Ranges News, designed and built websites for other businesses, published the radio frequencies of many Government departments so journalists and newsrooms could tune in live to police, military, fire and many other goings on and hear what was happening from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Today, 1 August 2022, we celebrate 30 years of VicNews, when Ashley Geelan began his own journalism journey at just 14 years of age. Soon we'll publish a complete timeline of Geelan Media and Ashley Geelan's family involvement in Victoria's media, dating back to when his great-great maternal grandfather, Geroge Mitchell started at The Age in 1858, aged just 10 years old. The Geelan's and Mitchell's have a history of involvement in Victoria's media dating back to the earliest times of Victoria's (white) settlement. And, Ashley Geelan thanks those that made VicNews possible from the start to today. Women hit by ute in Docklands

By Ashley Geelan Monday, 1 August, 2022 Highway Patrol is investigating a collision that occurred when two women in their 30s were hit by a car when crossing Dudley Street, Docklands on Saturday 30 July at about 10pm. A turning ute hit both of the women and rendered them unconscious with one of the women taken to hospital with serious leg injuries. The driver of the Triton ute, a 71-year-old Melton South man, stopped at the scene and spoke to police. Anyone who witnessed the collision or with dashcam footage is urged to contact police.

South Morang too strong for Old Eltham

South Morang have extended their Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 winning streak to nine after comfortably defeating Old Eltham Collegians by 70 points at Eltham College. The 15.8 (98) to 3.10 (28) victory all but clinches the double chance for the Lions and moves them

two games clear of the Turtles. For Old Eltham Collegians to claim the double chance now, they would need to win both remaining games, have the loser of next week’s top two clash also lose the last round and then they would require big wins themselves to bridge a percentage gap of almost 50. The Lions led from the opening bounce and never looked like losing in an emphatic display. Trailing by 31 points at the first change, the Turtles had a period early in the second term where they had a plethora of opportunities to bridge the gap, but shots at goal either missed or fell short in the heavy conditions. The Lions then slammed on two goals in quick succession midway through the term courtesy of Ben Peterson and Alex Colaidis. These two were the most productive forwards on the ground and each registered three majors for the day. With a 33-point buffer at the main break, South Morang had a goal on the board in the first minute of the second half, they won the ball from the first centre bounce and a Jake Potter handball presented Madison Bell with an easy goal. The game was as good as won by that early stage. Mathew Crooks would’ve been a likely match-up for Nathan Stefanile, but was out injured and as a result, the Lions big man dominated in the ruck and contributed around the ground as well. Tye Hall was influential early when the contest was up for grabs and finished the game full of running.

He also kicked two goals. The visitors’ defence was led well by Reece Jones, while Bailey Brown and Matthew Trim regularly fed the ball forward. The Lions controlled the corridor meaning the Turtles had to go wide when attacking which made scoring difficult. “The players have been first in at the contest and have put their heads over the ball for the past six to eight weeks and the results speak for themselves,” said South Morang coach Gary Hall. The Turtles have hit some speed humps in the past month or so in terms of injury and illness, so it’s a matter of getting the best list together in time for a tilt at the flag. “We now have

two weeks to prepare for our first final,” said Old Eltham Collegians coach Matt Sleeman. Sleeman praised the work of Lachlan Holmes who kept Jake Potter goalless while Sebastian Francis-Perkins was a late inclusion and used the ball well out of defence. Clay Crimmins was also productive and at times was the loose across half back. Captain Eden Simpson worked well in the midfield and was assisted by Nick Snowdon and Jesse Howell. South Morang and Old Eltham Collegians both face challenging hit-outs in the penultimate round of the regular season. The Lions host Laurimar at Mill Park Lakes Reserve in a top of the table clash. The winner of that heavyweight match will sit atop the ladder. The Turtles journey north to J.J. Clancy Reserve to take on Kilmore. They are yet to come away with a victory at the ground, but their last two matches at the venue resulted in single digit margins and they’ll need to win to avoid dropping to fourth spot on the ladder. 19yo woman charged with Terang fatality

Detectives have charged a 19-year-old Dixie woman with culpable driving causing death and driving whilst suspended following a fatal crash that claimed the life of a man in Terang yesterday. Police will allege in the Warrnambool Magistrates' Court tomorrow that a white Cherokee travelling south along the Cobden-Terang Road left the road and crashed into a tree about 1.15am. The female driver and a female passenger managed to free themselves from the vehicle before it burst into flames. They were both taken to hospital where the passenger, a 21-year-old Warrnambool woman remains with serious injuries. The male passenger, a 23-year-old Warrnambool man, died at the scene.

Bundoora Bulls rally to record inspirational win

Bundoora have all but assured themselves of a top three finish in the 2022 Melbourne Greyhounds Division

1 competition after defeating Greensborough by 14 points at Yulong Reserve. The visitors had a three-point lead midway through the final term after kicking the first two goals of the quarter before the Bulls stormed home to kick three majors in succession, including the sealer from co-captain Luke Collins, to prevail 11.10 (78) to 10.4 (64). With West Preston-Lakeside’s defeat to Heidelberg on Saturday, the Bulls have a ten-point gap from the Roosters in the third spot meaning things would have to go incredibly wrong for them to drop out of the top three. The Boro meanwhile still sits in fifth spot, six points clear of both Macleod and North Heidelberg, but with Heidelberg to come next week, the pressure will be on Saade Ghazi’s men to get back to their best in the lead-up to finals. Collins was brilliant in midfield, with his positioning during stoppages ensuring he won plenty of clearances for his side while Bundoora’s other captain Brent Marshall, who was celebrating his 200th game for the Bulls, was composed in defence as he has been for most of his time in the navy and white. Jackson Davies was also solid in the backline, with the Richmond VFL-listed defender standing out with his intercept and contested marking while Sam Lloyd got back to his goalscoring ways with three goals. Zak McCubbin led the way up forward once more for Greensborough, kicking three goals, while Nick Riddle can keep his head up high down back, keeping the inform John Jorgensen goalless. Bundoora had all the ascendency in the opening moments of the first term, but it was the visitors who kicked the opening goal of the match nine minutes in through Tom Bell. However, as the third quarter commenced, it didn’t take long for Bundoora to capitalise on their early opportunities. Lloyd kicked his second and Jesse King had his first major within the opening four minutes of the term to give the Bulls a five-point lead. After Jackson Hasler tied the scores nine minutes into the quarter, Michael Ryan’s men kicked three majors in a five-minute span to suddenly jump out to a 20-pointadvantage.However,against the run of play and thanks to some illdiscipline from the Bulls, Greensborough turned things around with McCubbin and Bell adding to their goal tallies to make it a ninepoint ball game at three-quarter time.

That momentum created by the ‘Boro’ continued into the final term after goals from William Reinhold and McCubbin, inside the first two minutes of the quarter, put the visitors in front. Greensborough pushed hard as they looked to extend their margin, but the Bulls stood tall down back, outnumbering the Boro on each thrust forward. Bundoora then started their charge towards victory with majors from Kain Proctor, Nathan Phillips and ultimately the sealer from co-captain Collins, sewing up an impressive 14-point win in front of their home fans. 22yo Frankston man arrested who created internationalspyware aged 15.

By Ashley Geelan Sunday, 31 July, 2022 A Frankston man, 24, sparked a global law enforcement operation for allegedly creating and selling spyware purchased by domestic violence perpetrators and other criminals has been charged by Australian Federal Police (AFP). The man, who was 15 years old when he allegedly created the Remote Access Trojan (RAT), appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday 29 July, but the matter was adjourned until 19 August 2022. In a world first, the AFP was not only able to identify the alleged Australian offenders who bought the RAT but also the Australian victims who were targeted.

AFP investigators served a summons on the man at his Melbourne home on 6 July 2022, to face six charges for his alleged role in creating, selling and administering the RAT between 2013 and 2019. A woman, 42, who lives at the same Frankston home as the man, was also served a summons to face one count of dealing with the proceeds of crime. She also faced Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday. Prosecutors will allege the Frankston man engaged with a network of individuals and sold the spyware, named Imminent Monitor (IM), to more than 14,500 individuals across 128 countries. The AFP identified there were 201 individuals in Australia who bought the RAT. A statistically high percentage of

Australia-based PayPal purchasers of IM RAT (14.2%) are respondents on domestic violence orders. One of the alleged purchasers is also registered on the Child Sex Offender Register. Of the 14 individuals, 11 bought the RAT during the active period of their domestic violence order (DVO) or within two years after a DVO was issued. Once the RAT was installed on a victim’s computer, users could control a victim’s computer; steal their personal information or spy on them by turning on webcams and microphones on devices without their knowledge. It could also log keystrokes – meaning users could see what was being written in emails and other documents – such as the home address of a victim. The spyware could be installed in a number of ways, including phishing (duping a victim into opening an email or text message). The AFP believes there were tens of thousands of victims globally. In Australia, the AFP identified 44 victims. In October 2019, the AFP released an intelligence bulletin to Australian state and territory partners about a number of suspects in their jurisdictions. AFP investigations are ongoing and would not elaborate further. The RAT cost about AUD$35 (US$25) and was allegedly advertised on a forum dedicated to hacking. It will be alleged the man made between $300,000 and $400,000 from selling the malware. Financial analysis showed that most of the money raised from allegedly selling the RAT paid for the man’s food delivery services and other consumable and disposable items.

Operation Cepheus began when the AFP received information from cyber security firm Palo Alto Networks and the FBI about a suspicious RAT in 2017. The information sparked a global investigation, which included more than a dozen law enforcement agencies in Europe. Eighty-five search warrants were executed globally, with 434 devices seized and 13 people arrested for using the RAT for alleged criminality. A team of five AFP cybercrime investigators worked on gathering critical intelligence as

well as shutting down the RAT. Once the AFP shut down the RAT in 2019, it stopped operating on all devices across the globe. The same year, the AFP received admissible evidence from overseas law enforcement agencies that enabled the Australian man to be arrested. The AFP-led investigation executed two search warrants in 2019 at the man’s then home in Brisbane. Lower Plenty keep double chance hopes alive

around the ground steering them towards a 6.13 (49) to 14.12 (96) victory. Despite both Darcy and Bill Barden missing, the midfield tandem of Joshua Turner and Tom Keys continued their excellent form with clearance-centric performances that allowed forward Corey Sleep to excel with his own impactful outing. For Thomastown, Josh Beare and Matthew Vasilevski had plenty of the ball come their way in the backline while Lawrence Lopiccolo became a spark in the midfield, combining with in-form ruck Jarryd Coulson. Phil Plunkett’s side remains two points behind Diamond Creek in the fourth spot as they look to sneak into a top three spot while Thomastown still sits six points behind fifth-placed St Mary’s, meaning a win against Panton Hill next week is a must if they’re to keep their finals hopes alive. Lower Plenty wasted no time getting the scoreboard ticking, with Keys opening the game with a snap at goal out of the stoppage, followed

by Joel Leslie in a similar fashion for a quick two-major lead to the visitors.

Leslie proved to be a source of consistency all game, with his backline work that keeping the scoring from Thomastown in check.

The goals would continue to follow for Lower Plenty, with set shots from Jonathan Zapantis and Sleep each converting into goals. Jordan Cugnetto would clock in the first major for Thomastown, but Zapantis quickly responded for his second of the quarter to push the visitors to a 31-point lead at the break. More of the same occurred at the start of the second quarter for Phil Plunkett’s side, when a 20-metre dribble kick by Sleep bounced through for a goal.

Benjamin Nesci was then able to convert a major through some improved transition work by the home side. With the game becoming more balanced, both sides exchanged goals midway through the quarter.

Zapantis would then close out the term with a major to cap off his threegoal game and put Lower Plenty 35 points up at the main break. The visitors would dominate coming out of halftime, registering five

unanswered third-term goals that quickly ballooned their lead out to a game-high 56-point lead at threequarter time. A goalless third term was broken in the fourth by Nesci who rose for a specky that gave energy to a struggling Thomastown side. He converted his set shot and the momentum was going all Thomastown’s way with goals from Anthony Capeci and Michael Tang reducing the deficit. FRV quickly escalated the response with 30 firefighters using five pumpers, an aerial appliance and a rescue unit arriving on the scene within four minutes to find the Bentleigh home fully involved in the fire. With the fire also impinging on a neighbouring property FRV crews set up protection lines to prevent any fire spread to the adjoining property whilst a live electrical wire laying on the front lawn was creating a significant safety issue for firefighters until the power company arrived. By Ashley Geelan Saturday, 30 July, 2022 Unwelcome visits from rats or mice can make us reach straight for the rat baits. But the products we choose can mean life or death for our local wildlife.

When buying rodenticide, always check the packaging and choose options that contain less harmful ingredients like Sodium Chloride (Ratsak Naturals), Coumatetralyl (AKA Racumin), or Warfarin (AKA Ratsak Doublestrength) – and leave the other options on the shelf. The options we need to avoid are SGARs: Second Generation Anti-Coagulant Rodenticides. SGARs are so potent and deadly that they are banned or heavily regulated in places like the USA, Canada, and the EU because of the risks. But in Australia, they are freely available to buy from any supermarket or hardware store. And it’s killing more than just rodents.

SGARs work by causing internal bleeding, and a single dose is fatal.

But when rats and mice eat baits poisoned with SGARs, they don’t die right away. There is a time lag between taking bait and feeling the effects. During this period, rodents become walking time bombs that can kill other animals and birds that eat them. Studies in Australia have found harmful, and often fatal levels of SGARs in dead birds of prey, includingSouthernBoobooks,Wedgetailed Eagles, and Powerful Owls, and they have also been indicated in the deaths of native reptiles, marsupials, and pets. To protect your native birds and wildlife, avoid any product that containsBrodifacoum,Bromadiolone, Difenacoum, Difethialone and Flocoumafen. You can also reduce the need for rodenticides by making your house and garden less friendly for rats and mice: Keep the garden tidy and free of fallen fruit or excess pet food and patch up any holes in the walls or roof that rodents might be using. Encourage native predators

by planting native trees – and protect any existing trees, especially those containing hollows that native birds of prey use for nesting (these hollows can take more than 150 years to develop). You can also install nest boxes that some owls to breed in.

Consider other non-poison pest control like snap traps first rodenticides should only be used as a last resort. If you do find you need to use rodenticide, always read the label to ensure you’re choosing safer products with Active Constituents like Sodium Chloride, Coumatetralyl, or Warfarin. A black Holden sedan was driving erratically in the car park of a convenience store at the corner of Douglas Parade and Heatherton Road, Noble Park around 6pm when it collided with several parked cars.

Police allege the driver of the Holden then drove into the adjoining supermarket carpark where members of the public tried to stop him. Police arrived and attempted to intercept the vehicle but the driver failed to pull over. A very low speed pursuit was initiated through the carpark out onto Heatherton Road. The driver collided with another police car that was on its way to assist on Heatherton Road, causing the Holden to come to rest against a tree. Police were forced to smash the car window to extract the driver and capsicum spray was deployed in an effort to subdue him.

Five teenagers, aged 14 to 19 years old, have been charged after an allegedly stolen Mercedes Benz as police attempted to intercept the vehicle in Morwell yesterday. The Mercedes, alleged to have been stolen in Craigieburn overnight, was observed in the Morwell area at about 9.30am but the driver failed to stop and drove off toward Yallourn North.

Police Air Wing was dispatched and relayed information to police on the ground. The Mercedes was seen to stop on Pipe Line Track, as police deployed stop sticks bringing the vehicle to a halt on Brown Coal Mine Road. As police approached it is alleged one of the occupants threatened an officer with a tomahawk. Five occupants of the car were arrested at the scene. A 14-yearold Morwell boy has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, burglary, assault/resisting police and has been bailed to appear in a children’s court at a later date. An 18-year-old Mooroopna woman has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, handling stolen goods and drug offences and will face a remand hearing today. Somerville Highway Patrol officers are appealing for public assistance after a 28-year-old Ringwood woman was hit by a car in Hastings on Wednesday 20 July.

Investigators have been told the Ringwood woman was on the road talking to the driver of a silver Volvo which was pulled over on the side of Boes Road at about 6pm. A southbound, light-coloured, Toyota Landcruiser collided with the woman as it was driving past. The male driver stopped and checked on the woman before driving off. Police described the Landcruiser as Caucasian, 40 to 50-years-old with grey hair and a solid build. The woman was taken to hospital with serious but non-lifethreatening injuries. Investigators wish to speak to the driver of the Landcruiser or anyone with dash cam footage or further information.

The body of a 68-year-old St Kilda man was located in waters off Point Lonsdale at about 10.15am following reports of a missing swimmer. An extensive search of the area was conducted, but sadly a 68-year-old St Kilda man was located deceased by the Air Wing and Water Police at about 12.15pm. A postmortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Only 9.5% of residents engage with print news in Murrindindi Shire

In Murrindindi Shire - by comparing census data to verified print newspaper circulation figues 90.5% of residents have moved online for council news and information.

Whether to online news or council's own online presence, such as Facebook and community group pages, Murrinindi residents have moved online as their number one source for council news and information. In a community survey, albeit with only 241 respondents, results showed Murrindindi Shire's residents growing preference for digital communication but also reinforced the need for the council to use a mix of both traditional and digital communication methods to reach people who may not be online or use social media. Based on the findings, the shire plans to shift the balance of it's communications to focus more on digital media, while continuing to support the distribution of news via traditional media like print and radio. According to a press release, Murrindindi Shire will: focus on using social media more to grow and engage our online audience; continue advertising in commercial newspapers and community newsletters, with a regular monthly full-page advertisement in each of them; produce editorial content for our media outlets on key projects and initiatives work toward introducing a monthlyelectronic(email)newsletter; continue sending out our quarterly printed newsletter by mail; continue our weekly segments with Councillors and Executive on our community radio station, UGFM and display regular monthly Council news on community noticeboards across the Shire. In line with declining circulation figures for print newspapers in the district - a worldwide trend - according to the Audited Media Association of Australia (AMAA), two newspapers The Yea Chronicle has an average net print circulation of 309 and The Alexandra & Eildon Standard has an average print circulation of 1,100.

A third person, a 33-yearold man from St Albans, was also charged with murder on Friday 8 July.

Police have charged two 38-yearold men, both of Springvale after they were arrested during an alleged attempted burglary at a Springvale construction site and an improvised firearm was seized.

Officers responded to reports of two men suspiciously loitering outside a construction site on Davy Court at about 7.20pm on Sunday, 17 July.

When police arrived they discovered a man inside the premises who attempted to run away but was swiftly arrested. A search located a second man attempting to hide inside the construction site. Police searched the men and located an improvised firearm, a quantity of drugs, and a number of tools. A 38-year-old Springvale man has been charged with burglary, handling stolen goods, proceeds of crime, and being equipped to steal and trespass. He has been remanded in custody to face Dandenong Magistrates’ Court later today. A second 38-year-old Springvale man remains in custody and is expected to be charged with burglary and firearms-related offences.

By Ashley Geelan Monday, 18 July, 2022 A 23-year-old provisional driver fo Pakenham has been charged after she was detected allegedly driving at 145km/h in a 40km/h roadworks zone in Berwick on Sunday, 17 July.

Roadworkers had to move to safety as the Holden Commodore narrowly missed a road safety barrier on the Princes Freeway at Berwick at about 9.50pm. Cardinia Highway Patrol members intercepted her vehicle which had four occupants onboard.

The p-plater, returned an evidentiary breath test of 0.92% BAC. She has been charged with a range of offences including reckless conduct endangering life, speeding dangerously and exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol.

She was bailed to face Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 24 November.

A 20-year-old learner driver has been caught driving more than double the speed limit after speeding away from police in Colac last night.

Patrolling police attempted to pull over a silver Ford Falcon on Murray Street for a routine intercept when the vehicle sped off about 8pm.

Officers witnesses the vehicle’s lights be turned off as it was clocked at 143km/h in a 60km/h zone before it was out of sight. Police did not attempt to pursue the vehicle due to safety concerns but had noted the registration. The learner driver, a 20-year-old Colac man, was arrested at his residence later in the evening and has been charged with reckless conduct endangering life and a range of traffic offences. He has been bailed to face Colac Magistrates’ Court on 7 November.

Six youths arrested after crime spree 20yo learner driver

Detectives today arrested six youths in Seaford in relation to a number of offences across the course of this week. Police allege the group of youths stole two vehicles on 10 July, a white Subaru from Safety Beach, and a silver Land Rover from Mt Martha, before committing a series of aggravated burglaries in Mt Martha, Safety Beach, Mount Waverley, Edithvale, Mordialloc, DandenongSouth,Montmorency,and Eltham between 10 and 14 July. It is alleged at approximately 3am on 11 July, that a silver Volkswagen and a silver BMW were stolen from a residential address in Mount Waverley, with a silver Kia allegedly stolen from a residential address in Eltham at approximately 4am on 13 July. All three vehicles are currently outstanding.

At approximately 1.30am this morning, the allegedly stolen white Subaru and silver Land Rover were observed travelling north on Church Street, Beaumaris. Police attempted to intercept the vehicles before the offenders allegedly drove at police, causing damage to two police vehicles and then fled the scene. Police Air Wing tracked the Subaru from the air, before arresting the four occupants of the vehicle in Seaford. A further two people were arrested shortly afterwards in Seaford. Police believe they were the occupants of the Land Rover however the vehicle remains outstanding at this time. A 15-year-old Frankston boy was charged with the aggravated reckless exposure of a police officer to risk by driving a stolen motor vehicle, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of methylamphetamine, dealing with the proceeds of crime, unlicensed driving and committing an indictable offence while on bail. A 15-year-old Hastings boy was charged with aggravated burglary, attempted aggravated burglary, burglary, attempted burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, theft, attempted theft, unlicensed driving, commit an indictable offence while on bail. By Ashley Geelan Thursday, 14 July, 2022 Special zones are being set up outside Eltham, Epping, Greensborough, Heidelberg, Mernda, Mill Park, Northcote, Preston and Reservoir Police Stations in Melbourne’s northeast so buyers and sellers can safely exchange items bought online. The zones are outside 24-hour police stations in the area with good CCTV coverage in a trial starting from today. Victoria Police has worked with Darebin Council to set up the initiative. Exchange zones have been popular in the United States for the last few years, with feedback indicating people feel safer meeting in designated sites instead of inviting someone to their home or meeting where there isn’t good

lighting or CCTV. Victoria Police is keen to raise awareness to improve safety after some exchanges resulted in bogus buyers robbing and assaulting sellers who’d listed items on online trading sites. The trend decreased during the pandemic and police don’t want to see incidents recur. Two examples have highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of those meeting a stranger to sell items, including: • A woman meeting a man in the car park of a shopping centre on Plenty Road in Reservoir on Wednesday 23 March. The male contacted the 26-year-old woman about the new iPhone she advertised for sale on social media, and advised her he would be sitting in his car waiting. When the woman arrived, she approached the car the man described to her as a green Nissan sedan with the mobile phone in its original case. The man did not get out of the car and asked to inspect the case, and when she handed it over through the drivers side window he began driving off while she held onto it. The woman was dragged for approximately 10 metres before she let go, leaving her with minor injuries to her arm. • On 9 November last year, a 42-year-old man arranged to meet another man at a park in Epping after making contact on social media about the phone he had advertised.

Upon meeting each other, the man who claimed to be purchasing the phone asked to inspect it, and when the victim showed him the phone the man grabbed it and pulled out a kitchen knife. The victim followed the offender and made attempts to get the phone back before a struggle took place where the offender dropped the phone and knife and ran off. The victim received a non-lifethreatening stab wound to his arm.

The trial will run over several months and will seek to establish whether the signs improve community safety and whether there are benefits in establishing more safer sites elsewhere.

Three dangerous drivers arrested in Wendouree

Police observed a vehicle wanted in relation to the incidents in Ballarat East around 2.30pm. An attempt was made to pull the vehicle over, but the driver allegedly took off through the Ballarat Central area. With the assistance of Air Wing, the vehicle was observed driving dangerously before turning into a shopping centre carpark on Gillies Road in Wendouree where it had a minor collision with another vehicle. The male driver and passenger fled the vehicle on foot and were both arrested a short time later in the vicinity of the shopping centre. Two 23-year-old Ballarat men are currently in police custody and expected to be charged with numerous offences relating to theft of motor vehicles and dangerous driving. A 23-year-old Ballarat woman was also identified as a passenger of the vehicle and is currently being

VIPER Taskforce commences operations

By Ashley Geelan Thursday, 14 July, 2022 VictoriaPolice'sVIPERTaskforce has arrested 10 people and charged them with 31 offences during their first five days of an operation targeting serious and organised crime groups. Officers were deployed to various locations from Wednesday, 6 July resulting in the following: • 272 people were checked; • 10 people arrested; • 31 charges issued; • 85 vehicles intercepted; • 20 Firearm Prohibition Order (FPO) searches undertaken; and • Three warrants executed. Examples of key results include the following: • On 7 July, VIPER Taskforce officers were involved in a series of proactive FPO searches linked to the Comanchero Outlaw Motorcycle Gang. During a search at a residential property on Domaine Drive, Berwick police

located drugs believed to be methylamphetamine and almost $50,000 cash. A 37-year-old man, who is an ex-Comanchero OMCG member, and a 33-year-old woman were both arrested and charged with drug and proceeds of crime offences; • On 8 July, VIPER Taskforce officers were undertaking patrols in Port Melbourne and intercepted a suspect vehicle where the driver was believed to have connections to organised crime activity. During a search of the car, a quantity of cocaine was located and further search warrants were executed on two residential address where drugs were also located. A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged with traffick drug of dependence and remanded in custody; and • On 10 July, VIPER Taskforce officers were undertaking proactive patrols in Collingwood targeting weapons offending when they located a stolen vehicle. A 42-year-old man who was wanted by Melbourne Embona Taskforce in relation to a number of armed robberies was arrested and a search of his vehicle uncovered a number of edged weapons. He was charged with armed robbery, theft of motor vehicle and weapons offences and remanded in custody. Further to this, yesterday VIPER Taskforce officers assisted Echo Taskforce members with a series of warrants across north-west Melbourne where a clandestine laboratory used to manufacture steroids, prescription drugs and MDMA was located. Four people connected with the Nomads OMCG were arrested, with two women and a man subsequently charged with drug offences. The VIPER Taskforce is a tactical and investigative unit based within Crime Command focused on preventing, detecting, deterring, disrupting and dismantling the criminal activities of groups such as outlaw motorcycle gangs, organised crime networks and street gangs. The taskforce supports the work of specialist investigation units and regional police by providing further resources to assist with investigation tactics and enforcement actions. It brings together detectives, general

duties police, intelligence officers and members of the Public Order Response Team, with support from specialised road policing members, to create a multi-discipline team. This diverse mix of specialist skills and experience within a single taskforce provides a unique opportunity for police to target all aspects of criminality linked to these groups, their associates and facilitators. Day to day, their work involves a range of enforcement and prevention actions with the flexibility to be deployed anywhere in the state at short notice.

The VIPER Taskforce also proactively targets known members, associates and facilitators of these groups to ensure police are doing everything possible to create a hostile environment for those involved in this criminality. Examples of this include firearm prohibition order searches, bail compliance checks, policing of OMCG runs, vehicle checks enforcement, and deployment to events known to host members of serious and organised crime groups.

With assistance from VIPER Taskforce, two residential properties in Albanvale and a Sunshine property were raided

around 5am Wednesday morning.

Police located a clandestine laboratory at one of the Albanvale properties and will allege it was utilised for the manufacture of steroids, prescription drugs and MDMA. A 39-year-old Albanvale woman was charged with trafficking large commercial quantities of MDMA and prescription drugs. She was remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 11 November.

A 49-year-old Albanvale man and a 40-year-old Sunshine woman were charged with possessing a drug of dependence. Both were bailed to appear at Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on 3 November. A 26-year-old Albanvale woman was released and is expected to be charged on summons. Police seized two pill presses, a significant quantity of drugs, including what appears to be approximately 1kg of MDMA, approximately 20kg of prescription drug tablets and approximately 2000 vials of testosterone. Police believe the quantities seized will have a street value in excess of several million dollars. Police prosecutors will allege that the four arrested were involved in the trafficking of drugs of dependence and testosterone, with links to various members of the Nomads OMCG. The investigation commenced after consignments containing prohibited goods were detected in New South Wales by Australian Border Force officers. The VIPER Taskforce is a tactical and investigative unit based within Crime Command focused on preventing, detecting, deterring, disrupting and dismantling the criminal activities of groups such as outlaw motorcycle gangs, organised crime networks and street gangs. The taskforce, which commenced in July 2022, supports the work of specialist investigation units and regional police by providing further resources to assist with investigation tactics and enforcement actions. VIPER is an acronym for visibility, intelligence, prevention, enforcement and reassurance.

Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad have yesterday arrested a 71-year-old Drouin man as part of their investigation into a series of reported incidents involving sexual assault, abduction and stalking in the Dandenong Ranges area dating back over 20 years. The Drouin man was arrested just after 8am yesterday morning in Abbotsford and is currently assisting with enquiries Detective Inspector Juliann Goldrick of the Sexual Crimes Squad told the media. He has now been charged with 35 offences including Rape (x6); Abduction of a child under 16 years (x2); False imprisonment (x2); Make threats to kill (x3); Procuring sexual penetration of a child under 16 (x2); Sexual penetration – under 16 years (x6); Indecent act – child under 16 years (x5); Stalking; and Firearms and weapons offences. He will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this morning. “Today’s arrest highlights our commitment to the sexual safety of the community and to holding those responsible for this type of offending to account," Det. Insp.

Goldrick said. Detectives will interview him in relation to two incidents, both of which occurred in 1998. The first incident occurred on 24 September where a female was hitch-hiking along the BelgraveGembrook Road in Belgrave when she was picked up by a male in a vehicle who offered to give her a lift.

She was subsequently taken to a remote area, threatened with a firearm and sexually assaulted before being dropped in Emerald. On 1 December, a female was hitch-hiking along Wellington Road in Clematis when she was picked up by a man who also threatened her with a firearm and drove her to a remote area. He sexually assaulted her before driving her to Belgrave railway station. Detectives are looking at any links between these matters and a number of alleged incidents involving sexual assault, abduction and stalking in the Dandenong Ranges area between 1996 and 2000. The

incidents involve a male in a vehicle approaching a female in an isolated area with limited public transport, offering to drive them, and once they are in the vehicle physically threatening them with a weapon before sexually assaulting them. All victims were females aged between 15 and 22 years of age. These incidents occurred in and around the Belgrave railway station, Wellington RoadinClematis,Belgrave-Gembrook Road in Belgrave, Selby and Menzies Creek. Investigators believe a number of different vehicles were used by the male in the incidents, including a maroon Toyota 4Runner 4WD. “These incidents have been subjected to lengthy investigations over the past 25 years and today’s result is testament to the persistence and dedication of Sexual Crime Squad detectives, both past and present," Det. Insp. Goldrick said. Detectives believe there may be people with further information about these or similar incidents, particularly women who were hitch-hiking in the area around that time. They are keen to speak to anyone who hitch-hiked in the Dandenong Ranges between 1996 and 2000, including those who did so without incident, as they still may have valuable information to provide to police. Investigators also acknowledge that it is possible there are people who were assaulted in similar circumstances and have not yet reported it to police. Detectives are keen to speak to those people and encourage them to come forward. This includes females who may have been approached by a man in a vehicle in the Dandenong Ranges area and offered a ride or enticed to get into a vehicle, or anyone who accepted a ride and was threatened with a weapon or sexually assaulted.

Police have charged a 34-yearold Ferntree Gully man following the location of improvised explosive devices at Ferntree Gully residence in last week. Detectives from the Illicit Firearms Squad had been at the address to execute a warrant related to a separate firearms investigation when the suspect devices were located about 5pm on Thursday 7 July. Officers from the Bomb Response Unit attended to assess the situation, which was later deemed safe. The 34-year-old Ferntree Gully man was charged with a range of offences, including manufacture explosives, possess explosives, possess unregistered firearms, possess distress signals without reasonable excuse, possess ammunition without a licence and possess drugs of dependence (methylamphetamineandpsilocybin).

He was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 13 August.

Operation Achilles nabs 5 dangerous drivers

Footscray police intercepted a Toyota Hilux in Braybrook yesterday at about 9.30am, after observing the vehicle allegedly being driven erratically. A preliminary breath test was conducted and the driver, a 48-year-

old West Footscray man, recorded an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.276% BAC. The vehicle was immediately impounded and his licence was automatically suspended. The West Footscray man is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving and other traffic related offences. The intercept

by Footscray police follows a string of offences detected by officers working as part of the North West Metro Region Operation Achilles over the weekend. It begun on Friday evening 11pm, when Operation Achilles officers observed a blue Subaru failing to obey a red traffic light in Airport West. Officers intercepted the vehicle on Citylink and found the driver to be an unaccompanied learner. The vehicle was immediately impounded for 30 days. The 21-year-old male driver is expected to be charged via summons for traffic related offences. On the following night (Saturday 9 July), officers intercepted a blue Volkswagen Golf after observing it allegedly speeding through road works and a residential area in Caroline Springs at about 9.50pm.

The 20-year-old male driver was issued with two driving infringements after police allege the vehicle was modified to increase performance.

About an hour later in Melton, police intercepted a silver Commodore. It’s alleged the driver, an 18-year-old female from Bonnie Brook, was an unaccompanied learner who only received her vehicle back from the impound yard in the last few months.

The vehicle was immediately impounded again, and the female is expected to be charged on summons with driving offences. At about 1.15am the next morning (Sunday 10 July), police observed a blue Mazda with five occupants allegedly racing a white sedan on Citylink at speeds in excess of 140km p/h. Operation Achilles officers intercepted the Mazda on the Ring Road in Thomastown and arrested the driver, a 19-year-old female from Wollert.

The probationary driver was subsequently charged with reckless conduct endangering life. Police

seized the vehicle and an application for forfeiture will be made at court.

The female was bailed to appear at BroadmeadowsMagistrates’Courton 13 December. Operation Achilles has been responsible for charging more than 240 of Melbourne’s worst hoon drivers and impounding over 150 hoon vehicles since July last year.

Operation Achilles remains ongoing and anyone with information about illegal hoon activity is urged to report this to police.

$3.5m grant for Eildon Splash and Skate Park project.

By Ashley Geelan Tuesday, 12 July, 2022 On Thursday 7 July, Steve Dimopoulos MP, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, announced a $3.5 million contribution towards the redevelopment of Thomas Marr and Walter Moore Reserves, as part of Murridindi Council’s ‘Eildon Splash and Skate Park’ project. Murrindindi Shire first started talking with the Eildon community about the future of Thomas Marr and Walter Moore Reserves back in 2019. Then in 2020, following the second round of community consultation, Council adopted an Improvement Plan for the precinct. Since then, Murrindindi Shire has been busy working with landscape architects, JF Studio, to develop the concept design for the precinct, known as ‘Eildon Splash and Skate Park’ alongside local representatives from the Taungurung Land and Waters Council, Baan Ganalina Water Group, Eildon Primary School students and other key stakeholders. The concept design shows what the Eildon Splash and Skate Park could look like and how each of the spaces could be used.

The $3.5 million grant is from the Victorian Government’s Regional Tourism Investment Fund.

The vapes are typically sold for $25 each, putting the combined value of the seizure at almost $30,000. The unnamed man was arrested and charged with the alleged illegal sale of vapes to underage persons, failing to hold an appropriate licence to sell nicotine vapes and unauthorised supply of nicotine vapes. Police are appealing for public assistance after several men were assaulted in separate unprovoked attacks in St Kilda earlier this year.

Detectives understand the first incident occurred on The Esplanade at about 8.30pm on Saturday 12 February. It is believed the unknown offender attacked two men by punching one of the male victims to the face several times before then punching the second male victim and kicking him in the chest. Detectives believe the same offender attacked another male on Acland Street around 11pm by punching him to the ground before kicking him in the face.

All victims, each aged in their 50s, received various injuries and were treated by paramedics at the scene.

The offender is perceived to be Southern European in appearance with short dark hair and a large tattoo on his left outer calf. He was wearing a white t-shirt with a dark pattern across the chest, black shorts and white Nike shoes. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact police.

Caulfield East house fire deemed

Several calls were received by Triple Zero for a house fully involved in a fire just after midnight. Callers said there were a lot of flames and smoke coming the Caulfield East homes. Thirty-five firefighters arrived within 7 minutes of receiving the call to find the doublestorey home well alight. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus fought the fire from both external and internal locations. Both properties, which were vacant and shared one block, were utterly destroyed. The fire took to approximately 50 minutes to bring under control, with no injuries reported. A crime scene has been established as detectives and fire investigators attend the scene today.

On Monday, 4 July VicNews witnessed several welfare reciepients simply being 'timed out', over and over again, or receiving '500 internal server error' messages. We also witnessed people attemtping to use the app on Android devices simply being unable to access the site at all. On many occasions we witnessed people after gaining access being asked to update their resume, skills, work experience and study details only to have the site time out when 'save and continue' or 'save' was selected. On some occasions, this simply returned people to the beginiing of the process with all the information they had just entered no longer present, or completly logged them out of the system. It really was a case of "Computer says no." The social servicesminister,AmandaRishworth, told The Guardian that the government “did not want jobseekers with disability accessing Disability Employment Services to be disadvantaged by the introduction of Workforce Australia”. “There were more than 70,000 people with disability that may have been disproportionately impacted if these changes were not made by being cut off from their income support payments,” she said. “The changes have been made to be consistent with Workforce Australia. An Albanese Labor government does not want people to be confused by these changes.”

Emergency services were called to Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road about 3.40pm after reports a truck, bus and several cars had been involved in a collision. Sadly the male driver of one of the cars involved, which left the road and crashed into a tree, died at the scene. The driver of the car of interest, a 19-year-old male from Maddingley, is currently in hospital under police guard. Detectives are appealing for witnesses and or dashcam vision of a 2005 yellow Ford Falcon utility prior to the collision. It’s believed the driver of the yellow utility was travelling from Diggers Rest towards Bacchus March on Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road. Two men were taken into custody yesterday after an injured man was found on an Emily Street nature strip at about 11.45pm on Wednesday, 6 July. He is currently being interviewed and expected to be charged today with trafficking large commercial quantity of methylamphetamine, 5 counts of attempt to traffick a large commercial quantity of 1,4-Butanediol, knowingly deal proceeds of crime and possessing identification to commit an indictable offence. Detectives also seized over 1.5 tonnes of 1,4-butanediol with a street value of approximately $4.7M, almost 1kg methylamphetamine with a street value of approximately $150,000 and a significant quantity of cash. On 4 July, a 29-year-old Melbourne man was arrested and interviewed by detectives. He was subsequently released pending further enquiries. The three-month investigation was conducted with the assistance of Australian Border Force. 1,4 butanediol or 'bupe' is used in the treatment of heroin addiction.

It is often administered to prisoners with a heroin addiction and is regularly traded within the prison system. Anyone with information about illegal drug trafficking is urged to contact police.

During an early morning search warrant at a residential address in Rowville, police seized a 2003 black Holden Commodore sedan, eight sets of number plates and seven street signs. Police allege the Rowville man attended a Dandenong South event on 1 July at approximately 11.10pm where he allegedly performed burnouts in a 2003 black Holden Commodore before both rear tyres popped, leaving gouge marks on the local road. The 22-year-old Rowville man was arrested yesterday and charged with 32 offences including reckless conduct endangering serious injury, driving in a dangerous manner, loss of traction, criminal damage, probationary driver driving a prohibited vehicle, handling of stolen goods, forgery and committing an indictable offence while on bail. He has been released on bail to appear before the Dandenong Magistrates Court on 2 November.

By Ashley Geelan Friday, 8 July, 2022 A new Victoria Police service, called STOPIT, allows people subjected to unwanted sexual behaviour or people who witness it on public transport to discreetly text police on 0499 455 455 using their mobile. They'll then receive a link to provide information to a dedicated team of transit police about what's happened. Launched today by Transit & Public Safety Command Assistant Commissioner Dean McWhirter, it's the first time a police force in Australia has deployed such technology. “This is a significant initiative for Victoria Police and I am incredibly proud of everyone who has dedicated years to this Australianfirst service," Asst. Commissioner McWhirter said. A similar service has operated in the UK for several years and credited with empowering

victims and bystanders to come forward. Victoria Police has been developing STOPIT since 2019 to help combat sexual offending on public transport and give commuters greater confidence when they travel.

People using the service will be able to notify police about six types of behaviours comprising unwanted sexual behaviour, suspicious behaviour, threatening and offensive behaviour, obscene and racist language, drug and alcohol-related incidents and graffiti and property damage. They are directed to a digital form and asked to submit details of the incident including the time, date, location and public transport carriage number. A photo may also be submitted if it is safe to capture one.

Information from notifications will be used to help police identify and hold perpetrators to account. “STOPIT will give police a better understanding of exactly what’s occurring and most importantly boost our ability to identify perpetrators and hold them to account,” Asst. Commissioner McWhirter said. It will also be used to help Victoria Police determine where to deploy members and tackle recidivist offending. Anyone requiring an immediate police response in an emergency is still advised to phone Triple Zero (000). STOPIT is not monitored live and should not be used if an urgent response is required. Research completed for Victoria Police has shown people who are subjected to unwanted sexual behaviour or witness it often don't report it at the time out of safety concerns or because they don’t know how to make a complaint.

There can also be confusion about whether unwelcome behaviour is a criminal offence, but Victoria Police stresses it wants to hear about any behaviour which makes a person feel uncomfortable, frightened or threatened. Victoria Police has worked with the Department of Transport, public transport operators, the Public Transport Users Association and women's advocacy groups in the development of STOPIT. Police have been told the resident of the property heard what sounded like popping noises around 12.30am before they went outside to investigate. The resident found the horse stables, adjacent to the family home, engulfed in flames and raised the alarm. A number of horses were able to be retrieved from the burning stables but sadly it is believed 12 died in the blaze. after police responded to a break-in at a telecommunications store on Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing around 12.40am. Werribee officers were quickly on the scene and spotted a red SUV, with damage to its rear, leaving the area. Officers on the ground were assisted by the Airwing who followed the car as it made its way onto the Princes Freeway towards Geelong. The vehicle performed a U-turn and was followed by police as it passed through Port Melbourne, St Kilda and into the south-eastern suburbs, at times travelling at a fast rate of speed. As officers attempted to intercept the car on Westall Road the offenders threw a safe from the rear of the vehicle and crossed onto the wrong side of the road. The trio dumped the car in Gayle Court, Clayton South before they drove off in a second car.

The Airwing then observed the men dump the second car in Jason Place, Hampton Park where they fled on foot towards a third car in Branton Drive. Police moved in and arrested the three men. The men, a 28-year-old from Carrum Downs, a 32-year-old from Bundoora and a 33-year-old from Skye, are currently being held in police cells pending being interviewed by police.

A short pursuit ensued and the Oakdowns man, who resided in Prahran at the time, was subsequently arrested in South Yarra.

The man was charged with 22 offences including conduct endangering life, assault of a police officer, unlawful assault, assault with a weapon and fail to stop at an accident. He was bailed by the Melbourne Magistrates Court to attend a committal hearing on 5 July 1993 however, failed to appear.

Police tracked the man around Australia for nearly 30 years, before locating him in Oakdowns, Tasmania.

The now 61-year-old Oakdowns man self-presented to the Prahran Police Station on Wednesday 6 July. He has been bailed for a committal mention on 4 August 2022. Victoria Police reminds the community that it is never okay to assault an emergency worker with the crime now carrying a mandatory six-month jail sentence.

It’s alleged the items were located inside the premises and detectives estimate that they have recovered over 5,000 pieces of clothing, mainly women’s intimates. Officers continue to investigate the matter but wish to speak to anyone in the Reservoir area who may have had items of underwear or activewear stolen.

Police believe Mr Tascas went missing some time between 7 and 10 October, 2005. Detective Acting Inspector Tony Combridge, Missing Persons Squad today briefed the

media and the public during a livestreamed video conference earlier today. “A significant investigation has been conducted over the past 16 years and it remains our strong belief that Trevor was murdered," Det. Acting Insp. Combridge said. At the time he went missing, Mr Tascas had been residing at an address in Thatcher Court, Whittington with another man. He had sporadic contact with his mother around that time, however she became increasingly concerned when she did not hear from him for some weeks and on 1 April 2006 reported him missing at Geelong police station. Mr Tascas' disappearance was treated as suspicious and initially investigated by the Homicide Squad.

His body has never been located.

Investigators believe Mr Tascas had been involved in a dispute with his flatmate prior to his disappearance.

Police have also confirmed that after Mr Tascas' disappearance, a number of his personal items including a vehicle and furniture were sold off and his dog was given away. A number of withdrawals were made from Mr Tascas' bank account in July and August 2006, however police have since established Trevor was not responsible for those transactions. His phone was last used on 7 October, 2005. In July 2008, a man and a woman were charged in relation to Mr Tascas' death. The man was charged with murder and later sentenced to 23 years imprisonment, however he appealed his conviction and in 2011 it was quashed. A retrial on the charge of manslaughter was ordered, however in 2013 the jury gave a verdict of not guilty. “While two people have previously been charged in relation to Trevor’s suspected death, no one has directly been held to account for his murder," Det. Acting Insp. Combridge said. The woman was charged with being an accessory after the fact to manslaughter and obtain property by deception in, and in 2009 was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. In 2020, an inquest was held in relation to Mr Tascas'

death. Police believe there are still people out there who have information about who was responsible for the incident which resulted in Trevor’s death. “It is a unique set of circumstances, however we believe there are still people out there who can assist us with this case and with providing Trevor’s family with some level of justice," Det. Acting Insp. Combridge said. They are also keen to speak to anyone with information about Trevor’s movements or interactions in the weeks leading up to his disappearance. Victoria Police is today announced a $1M reward for information in relation to those responsible for Trevor’s death.

“Trevor was well known around Whittington at the time of his disappearance and many of his associates still reside in that area," Det. Acting Insp. Combridge said. A reward of up to $1M will be paid at the discretion of the Chief Commissioner of Police, for information leading to the apprehension and subsequent conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Trevor Tascas. The Director of Public Prosecutions will consider, according to established guidelines, the granting of indemnification from prosecution to any person who provides information as to the identity of the principal offender or offenders in this matter. Police are hoping the reward will encourage someone to come forward with information.

“With new and compelling information, there is the potential for us to move forward with this case again. “We’re hopeful that someone who does have new information about Trevor’s death, the circumstances and who was responsible, will see this appeal and finally choose to come forward and speak to police," Det. Knox police last night arrested two men after they found weapons, drugs and a firearm after conducting a vehicle search in Barmah Drive, Wantirna about 1.30am. Officers spotted the car stationary in the middle of Barmah Drive with five men on board around 1.30am. The car was intercepted before a search of the vehicle uncovered a quantity of alleged drugs, two conducted energy devices, knuckle dusters and a firearm.

Officers from State Highway Patrol North detected a 2000 Volvo S40 sedan allegedly travelling 115km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Calder Highway about 12.45pm on Sunday, 3 July.

The vehicle intercepted, a 33-year-old driver underwent a preliminary breath test which allegedly indicated alcohol on her breath. There were two children, a 9-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl, in the car. The driver was subsequently taken to a police station where she underwent a breath test which allegedly returned a breath alcohol reading of .110. Her vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1200. The woman is expected to be charged on summons for drink driving and speeding offences.

The man, who was wanted by police for the dangerous driving incidents and for speeding off from police on several occasions, was spotted by officers driving a green Falcon in Benalla about 3pm. When police tried to pull the car over, the driver sped off.

Police coordinated their response and successfully deployed stop sticks on the Midland Highway as the man headed into Shepparton, at times believed to be driving approximately 150km/h. The car came to a stop shortly after and the man ran from the vehicle. Police cordoned off the area at the intersection of Boundary and Old Dookie Roads as they searched for him. He was arrested without incident when he tried to run from police in bushland near a number of rural properties about 6pm. At the time of the above incidents, it is believed the man was driving a silver Holden VE commodore sedan.

Some teenage boys asked the elderly lady for some 'money for breakfast'. As she took out her purse to give the teens a small amount of money, the boys grabbed her purse, snatched a $100 note and took off.

Police understand an 87-year-old woman was on her mobility scooter on Southgateway, near a reserve that intersects with Hornsby Drive, Langwarrin, when she was approached by six to eight teenage boys on Wednesday, 29 June about 10.30am. The teens asked the woman for some money for breakfast before she took out her purse to assist. The victim intended to provide the boys with a small amount of cash. One of the boys then grabbed the woman’s purse and a $100 note and struggled with the victim as she tried to retrieve her belongings. The group then walked away towards Centre Road. The Langwarrin woman, who was shaken by the incident, reported the matter to police over the weekend. Detectives are seeking assistance from the public to identify the youths involved. Police seized eight firearms from an Armstrong Creek property, including long-arm shotguns, bolt action rifles and a sawn-off shotgun.

Ammunition, a small quantity of methylamphetamine and cannabis, and equipment police will allege was used for making false number plates were also seized. A 33-year-old male from Armstrong Creek has been charged with trafficking a drug of dependence and bailed to appear before Geelong Magistrates Court on 6 September. During the second warrant in Mount Duneed, police seized three firearms, including a loaded handgun and sawn-off shotgun, as well as other firearm parts, three ounces of methylamphetamine worth around $11,000, and $2,600 in cash. A 27-year-old Mount Duneed man has been charged with trafficking firearms, trafficking drugs, and other related offences. He has been remanded to appear before Geelong Magistrates Court on 26 July. Earlier in the month, police executed a search warrant at a Moolap address on 1 June in relation to the same investigation, seizing more than 25 litres of 1’4 Butanediol with a street value of around $75,000, 150 grams of methylamphetamine worth approximately $30,000, two firearms and $110,000 in cash. A 29-year-old Moolap male was arrested and charged with trafficking a drug of dependence. He was bailed to appear before Geelong Magistrates Court on 16 September.
