Hundreds of firefighters battled valiantly last week bushfires which tore through the mountain suburbs of Ferny Creek, The Basin, Kalorama and Upwey under control.

The fires were the worst experienced ,in Victoria since Ash Wednesday, back in February, 1983.

Three people died
in
Seabreeze Avenue, Ferny
Creek. The three victims of the fire have been identified a a young, married couple, Graham and Jennifer Lindroth. They died side-by-side in the cellar of their bush idyll, along with Genevieve Erin.
And from the ashes came a tragic mix of miracles and heartbreak. Bob lrving, from Ferny Creek, returned to his Alpine Way home last week to find it,intact. His neighbor's house, however, was a smouldering ruin. Newlyweds Geoff and Lea Ristrom
