EARTH SHAPING NEWS

Inside Issue

DOES THE GCBAA Still Have a Newsletter?

Let’s answer the question right out of the gate: YES — the GCBAA absolutely still has a newsletter. And by the time you make it through the next 68 pages, you’ll not only know that, but you’ll also be wondering how you’re going to get all this info out to your staff without creating a project management spreadsheet. (Pro tip: Sticky notes. Lots of them.)

This isn’t just any issue.

This issue of EarthShaping News is one for the record books. It’s officially the largest publication in GCBAA’s history and marks the longest stretch of time between issues since this beloved publication started back in the early 1990s. Who’s to blame? Well… that would be your friendly neighborhood Executive Director (me). But in my defense, it turns out putting together nearly 50 pages of meaningful, curated, relevant, and actually-still-true content is kind of a big lift. Clark Kent wore a fedora for a reason — probably to keep from tearing his hair out in editorial frustration. (Yes, I Googled that. No, I’m not comparing us to superheroes. You already know better.)

Why the long pause?

Over the past few years, GCBAA leadership has had a thoughtful debate about the newsletter’s future. Between the cost of printing and mailing, the content wrangling, the everchanging mailing addresses, and the eternal stress of bleed lines and deadlines — this thing can be a bear. But you kept asking, “Where’s

the newsletter?” And honestly, that steady drumbeat told us everything we needed to know.

So here it is. And we’re proud of it. What’s inside?

This issue is more than a recap — it’s a celebration of your work. It covers 12 months of GCBAA milestones, conversations, innovations, and stories that you, our members, helped shape. It’s proof that we’re staying true to our mission of being a Member-Driven Association. These aren’t ideas that started in the GCBAA halls and ended up in your inbox. They began in conversations at job sites, at meetings, and over phone calls — and we turned them into action.

You’ll find updates on member benefits that can save your business real money, highlights from industry events, tools like the Construction Job Board, and yes, ideas for how to find your next great hire through our newly created Career Development Portal. Every page has something — and probably something you can act on.

Here’s your homework (you knew this was coming):

Grab a pen, a pad of sticky notes, and start tagging. By page 68, you should have a small forest of flags sticking out of this thing. Then walk around your business and start delegating:

• Mark that upcoming GCBAA event on the company calendar

• Assign a team member to register for the

Job Board and receive construction projects available around the country

• Share the member benefit info with your controller and start saving money

• Task your HR rep to scout the talent pool we’ve aggregated through our Career Development Portal

This isn’t just a newsletter — it’s 365+ days

of GCBAA communications bundled into one power-packed issue. And the next issue?

Well… we’re not going to make any bold promises about the date (see paragraph two). But what we can guarantee is that it will be full of the same member-driven, industryfocused, and opportunity-packed content you’ve come to rely on.

In the meantime, don’t be shy. Keep sending your stories, ideas, and needs. Your voice is what makes this organization thrive. Now go enjoy the read. And maybe clear some space on your desk — you’re going to need it.

With pride and just a hint of paper cut, Your GCBAA Executive Director

PLANTING THE SEEDS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION: GCBAA’S Career Development Portal

As you read through this issue of EarthShaping News , you’ll begin to notice subtle mentions of a new initiative that GCBAA is proud to introduce: our Career Development Portal This program wasn’t built overnight—it was the result of listening to you, our members, and recognizing a challenge that continues to persist: labor shortages across nearly every segment of our industry.

Let’s be honest. For years, the trades have struggled to compete with the societal narrative that a four-year college degree and a white-collar job are the only indicators of success. As an industry made up of builders, manufacturers, suppliers, architects, designers, and many other skilled professionals, we know this simply isn’t true. Much like we’ve worked to overcome the stereotype that golf is “male, stale, and pale,” we must also reframe how we present the skilled trades to the next generation.

That’s why the GCBAA Career Development Portal was created. This program is designed to help fill the pipeline of talent while complementing other efforts across the industry aimed at growing the future workforce. It's not just about finding people to fill open jobs today—it’s about fostering future GCBAA members and giving individuals a responsible, informed, and meaningful pathway into golf course construction and its allied professions.

One of the inspirations behind this initiative came from Rees Jones, during his Don Rossi Award acceptance speech. He credited his father, Robert Trent Jones, Sr., for teaching him a foundational principle: You need to know how to build a golf course

before you can design one. That’s a belief we wholeheartedly share. This program aims to provide young people and newcomers with exposure to the full scope of the golf construction world—from fieldwork and CAD drawings to manufacturing, product distribution, sales, and project management. We’re offering a 360-degree view of the industry.

Participants will have the opportunity to shadow professionals through a realworld project lifecycle. They might spend time learning about bid processes, design elements, or even tag along with suppliers, architects, or shapers on a job site. In the end, even if they don’t pursue a long-term career in golf, they will gain an appreciation for the people and work that shape the courses we all enjoy.

What makes this program different is its unstereotypical, open-minded approach We’re not just introducing people to a trade— we’re giving them a meaningful look into the variety of paths and passions that make up this unique industry. And we believe that this kind of exposure will change the way people view golf construction—by humanizing the challenges, showcasing the creativity, and celebrating the sense of purpose that GCBAA members bring to their work.

We’ve already made strides to promote the program in collaboration with our valued partners. Through the GCSAA’s network of Turf Bowl universities, professors, and coaches, we’ve reached collegiate audiences. With the FFA Alumni Association, we’re making high school students and recent graduates aware of careers in golf. The NGCOA has helped us spread the word

through their Accelerate Community Board, and the ASGCA is currently working with us to support and promote on-site shadowing opportunities. Looking forward, we’re most excited about our growing partnership with the USGA Pathways Internship , a program that aligns closely with our mission and is quickly gaining traction.

The Career Development Portal is open year-round , and we encourage all of you to help us get the word out. Whether it’s a neighbor, a family friend, or someone you meet through a youth program— share this opportunity. You never know when a simple introduction could plant the seed for a future career in golf.

If you're interested in following up on applicants or reviewing submissions, contact the GCBAA office to subscribe to email alerts. We’ve created a clearinghouse on the GCBAA Community Board , where all applications are posted. Abridged notifications are sent only when there’s a new submission and include a daily digest— so your inbox won’t be overwhelmed.

This program represents more than a new initiative—it’s a commitment. A commitment to the future of our industry, to the success of our members, and to the young people who may one day carry this profession forward. The GCBAA Career Development Portal is live, it’s growing, and it’s ready to help shape the future of golf course construction.

Let’s build the next GCBAA generation— together.

OLD SAYINGS, NEW SOLUTIONS: The Construction Job Board is Here!

We’ve all heard them: those old pieces of advice that somehow keep showing up in new clothes. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” “A bird in the hand…” But in today’s world, some fresh classics have emerged—thanks in large part to that five-letter "C" word we’ve all learned to not say aloud: COVID. The phrases “You’re on mute” and everyone’s favorite, “This meeting could have been an email,” have become standard workplace lingo.

But now even email is under fire. Our inboxes are so full they need a spam filter and a therapist. We’re at the point where software is writing software to reply to software. Somewhere along the way, we’ve lost touch with the human behind the message. That’s an article for another day, but it’s worth mentioning because your GCBAA staff loves a problem—especially ones that involve smoke, metaphorically and literally. We’re built to run toward it.

So here’s the problem: the industry is humming. There’s no shortage of opportunities— new projects, RFPs, bid requests—but operators and contractors are struggling to keep up with the influx and find the right way to share or pursue the work. Too many emails. Too many systems. Not enough time.

The solution? Expand our GCBAA Community. We’ve created a simple, opt-in tool to keep

you updated on real, relevant job leads—without adding to your email fatigue. Say hello to the GCBAA Construction Job Board, hosted through a private, invite-only Google Group.

−Here’s how it works:

• You sign up. (Or you already did because your inbox is not on life support and you didn’t miss the memo when we initially launched this program earlier this Spring)

• GCBAA posts project leads. Municipal contracts. Park and rec upgrades. Bridge replacements. Cart paths. Multi-milliondollar developments. If it’s a shovel-ready opportunity or a bid request related to golf course construction, you’ll see it.

• You get a summary email. As needed each day (or instantly if you prefer), you’ll get a concise list of new opportunities, including project descriptions, city/state, and links when available. If there are no updates, no email!

• You decide what to pursue. We’re not brokering the work. We’re just getting it to your radar before the deadline passes.

What makes this platform stand out? It’s you. The GCBAA network includes golf

course operators, superintendents, architects, designers, and vendors who all help us identify opportunities—many that aren’t publicly posted. We combine that intelligence with today’s tech to bring it to you.

All you need is a Google email address (e.g., GCBAAmember123@gmail.com). Once you’re added to the Group, you can view current and archived listings, ask questions, and control your own settings. Want to opt out? One click. Want real-time alerts? You got it. Many private URL accounts don’t play nice with the Google/ Microsoft Platform so we recommend gmail. com. You may try your preferred account and troubleshoot any issues.

This new, free member benefit is your chance to monitor industry activity, track job types and regions, and maybe even stumble across your next big project. It's like job Tinder, but way more professional—and no awkward swiping.

Want in? Email Mychelle or me with the address you’d like to use. We’ll add you right away.

We’re proud of this resource, and even more excited to see the connections it helps create. Don’t let another opportunity slip by because it got buried in an inbox somewhere between a delivery confirmation and a phishing scam.

Let’s get you to work.

PREACHING WHAT HE PRACTICES: O’DONNELL PROMOTES Safety Awareness

Jon O’Donnell is pretty humble when you ask him about his passion for GCBAA. “I owe this industry a lot. It’s given me so much through the years and I want to continue to give back what I can.”

Like many top GCBAA members, Heritage Links, has grown mightily and prospered over the past decade. “Hectic doesn’t begin to describe it,” he says. Yet he always made time to volunteer for the organization and to serve on the board. Now, in the early stages of his two-year presidential term, I had a chance to interview him about his aspirations for his time at the helm, particularly preaching the importance of safety programs for busy job sites. Why? “I don’t think we can take it seriously enough. My goal is to try to create wider awareness and see if we can’t encourage better safety practices industry-wide.”

How does it feel to follow John McDonald as president?

“Ha! You know, we all compete against each other, but John and I have become very good friends through being on the board. Also, the industry is so busy and there’s so much work right now that it probably does make it easier to like each other! Seriously, he’s been great. I’ve talked with him a lot and sat in on a bunch of meetings last year to learn from him and get used to working with Justin and Mychelle.

Okay, you’re the president…why does GCBAA matter to the industry?

It’s still shocking – after 25 years that I’ve been a member – that so few people really know about GCBAA. We’re always behind the curtain of the high profile new golf projects, renovation projects and even the irrigation work we all do.. GCSAA had the same image problems and it took a while for them to get that recognition they all deserve. We need to continue to get the message out about what we do and the role we (GCBAA) members play in these golf projects that continue to fuel this exciting industry.

How did site safety become such a focal issue for you?

Our company had a gruesome injury on a site four years ago. I went to visit that person and it really moved me that he didn’t leave work the same way he arrived. These guys come to work to make a living and enjoy what they do. We can’t let them leave in an ambulance. I decided right then that Heritage Links needed to get better.

Lexicon, Inc., our parent company, has always had a strong safety track record but we really turned it up a notch. It started with the corporate safety manager giving us some guidance and led to having two dedicated Heritage Links safety managers who go from site to site each week just double-checking everything. We’re striving for zero tolerance of any incident that could potentially harm our employees. And remember that we collaborate with many other builders and builder members on projects, so we want to see our partners do the same.

What are some typical injuries and problems you’ve been trying to eliminate?

Complacency in the field. Maybe a lack of attention. Historically, injuries will often happen Monday, Friday, or the day after a holiday. They’re not focused and, consequently, something really stupid happens. Mistakes happen when attention lags. We want our site supervisors to talk to guys daily about every little detail.

We try to strive for a conversation between the managers and team about dust, visibility, traffic control, utility lines, heat…the simple stuff. If you have that talk every day it will help and strengthen that safety culture. When you’re working with irrigation, cuts and nicks on your hands and feet are issue we deal with. We’re always cutting pipe and we’re always in a trench. Little injuries happen too much.

There are environmental risks out there every day. The biggest is probably hot sun, dehydration and heat stroke. It’s so important to make sure they have a place to go cool off.

Also simple stuff like putting eyewash stations on site. Making sure the fuel tank is located properly in the yard. Seatbelts not working properly on equipment. Using the wrong straps to secure pipe on trucks. The issues are endless.

What role does insurance play in this effort?

There are insurance impacts on any site vehicles or trucks driven by employees. So, we have installed cameras in all company trucks, and we don’t allow employees to use their cellphones improperly or improperly text while driving. The cameras are operated by artificial intelligence and they are pointed at the employees’ heads and eyes and it will automatically notify our safety department if they aren’t paying attention. Phone calls and texting are all-too-common reasons for accidents.

So insurance obviously matters, but it seems like it’s more than that.

The insurance part goes hand in hand with kind of a cultural shift. Obviously, every accident has costs and deductible impacts and can push rates up. But, culturally, we really just care about keeping them safe. They’re family. But it’s tough because people don’t like to be watched. It’s a little bit problematic but we’re seeing our guys begin to respond to it and I know we’ll get there eventually.

How can your colleagues learn from some of your experiences?

Unfortunately, we all learn from our mistakes. My goal is to simply say your employees are your most valuable assets and you need to keep them as safe as possible. And that message needs to come from their

supervisors and the very top of their company. For us, it’s the awareness of trying to keep everyone as safe as possible and not have to learn that lesson from a really gruesome accident.

Forget the cost of that accident. It’s probably hundreds of thousands of dollars. But the cost is the cost. What really matters is that guy came to work and didn’t leave the same way.

As president, I’m going to try to preach what we’ve been practicing. As a friend, colleague and fellow member. I’m just trying to bring awareness to a different level. We’re working on a series of animated videos to illustrate some key safety issues and I hope we’ll have them ready for the summer meeting.

I do hope this helps raise awareness in the industry. It’s not my role to tell people how to run their business but I can tell them, from experience, if you have site safety discussions and act appropriately, the risk of something happening goes down.

We’re a tight-knit association: we’re all working together to make our industry better. Whether it’s efficiency building or manufacturing, we’re all working together. Safety is another example of that. If there is an issue, we want to be able to help our colleagues.

Final thoughts: What do you want people to take away from this effort?

It’s changing the thinking about the safety culture of our industry. Our safety managers are changing our culture everyday and I want all of my colleagues to think about it. If we can just raise the bar a little, we’ll all be better off.

Sincerely,

ELLEN DAVIS RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS

Perry O. Dye Service Award FROM GCBAA

LINCOLN, NEB. (MAY 29, 2025) –

The Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA) is proud to announce Ellen Davis as the recipient of the 2025 Perry O. Dye Service Award, honoring her extraordinary service, leadership, and commitment to the Association, Foundation, and the golf industry.

The Perry O. Dye Service Award is presented periodically to individuals who unselfishly contribute “above and beyond the call of duty” to strengthen the GCBAA and its mission. The award is named in honor of the late Perry O. Dye, whose leadership and financial stewardship helped guide the Association through its formative years.

Ellen Davis joined GCBAA in 1994 and has been a vital force within the organization for over three decades. Her dedication spans across both the Association and its Foundation. She served on the GCBAA Board of Directors

from 2006 to 2018, holding Executive Board roles including Secretary (2008–2018) and Vice President (2018). In 2018, she transitioned to the GCBAA Foundation Board and in 2021 took the reins as President.

Ellen’s passion for giving back is evident in her tireless advocacy for the Association and the Foundation’s Sticks For Kids program. Whether continuously volunteering behind the scenes or emceeing the Foundation’s Sticks For Kids Auction, Ellen’s energy and enthusiasm have made a lasting impact. She is widely recognized as having the heart of the Association and Foundation at the core of everything she does.

In her professional life, Ellen serves as Manager of SportZmix Solutions, a division of Faulks Brothers Construction Inc. In 2023, she played a key leadership role in the acquisition of Kempker Greens Mix Blending, a move that further strengthened the company’s position as a leader in custom soil blending for golf

courses and sports fields. Ellen described the acquisition as a chance to “build upon both of our strong businesses, recognized brands, quality services, and continue to be the leading custom soil blending company.”

Under her guidance, SportZmix Solutions and Waupaca Sand & Solutions—both divisions of the Faulks family of companies—have upheld their mission to deliver the highest-quality materials while helping clients exceed their project goals. Her strategic leadership and commitment to customer relationships mirror the very principles the Perry O. Dye Service Award seeks to honor.

Ellen’s legacy is also marked by her advocacy for inclusion in the industry. In 2020, she was a featured panelist in the "Ladies Leading Turf" discussion at the GCSAA Conference & Trade Show in Orlando, Florida, further cementing her role as a trailblazer for women in the golf construction and maintenance industries. Additionally, Ellen was recognized by Golf Inc. in 2021 as one of the '10 Gurus of Golf Course Construction,' acknowledging the unsung heroes who influence golf construction through their expertise and innovations on both the design side and the shovel side of the business.

“Ellen Davis exemplifies the values that Perry O. Dye held dear—selflessness, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to service,” said Justin Apel, GCBAA Executive Director. “Her decades of leadership and her passion for growing the game through the Foundation have helped shape the direction

and culture of our organization. Under her guidance, SportZmix Solutions/Waupaca Sand & Solutions became a GCBAA Charter Member in 2015—further reflecting her belief in supporting the Association at every level. This award is a small token of our deep appreciation for all she has given. On a personal note, Ellen has been one of my mentors and friends throughout my time with the Association and has been a true leader and role model for me and for our staff. We are better because of her.”

GCBAA President Jon O’Donnell added, “Ellen has always led with humility, purpose, and a genuine care for everyone in this industry. Her influence stretches well beyond boardrooms and business—she’s been a steady hand, a mentor, and a true champion of the GCBAA mission. There is no one more deserving of this recognition.”

Please join us in celebrating Ellen Davis, a true humble leader and steward of the industry whose roots run deep in both the golf course construction industry and the GCBAA family.

This is the eighth time the Perry O. Dye Service Award has been granted. Previous recipients include Perry Dye in 2005, Jim Kirchdorfer, Sr. (2006), Rick Elyea (2010), Steve Christman (2013), Tommy Sasser (2015), Dennis Wagner (2018), and O’Brien McGarey (2021).

Davis will be honored with the Perry O. Dye Service Award at the 2025 GCBAA Summer Meeting to be held in Boston, Massachusetts on August 13, 2025, during the GCBAA Award & Auction Dinner at The Westin Copley Place. For those interested in attending the award presentation, details will be available this month by visiting www.gcbaa.org, or contact the GCBAA executive office at (402) 476-4444.

GCBAA RECAP: Building Connections AT THE 2025 GCSAA CONFERENCE AND TRADE SHOW

The 2025 GCSAA Conference and Trade Show in San Diego was nothing short of extraordinary, drawing more than 11,000 attendees from across the golf industry to a packed week of learning, collaboration, and celebration.

For GCBAA, the week was equally meaningful — from hosting our Board Dinner at the San Diego Wine & Culinary Event Center to conducting our annual Board of Directors and Board of Governors meetings, we remained deeply engaged in supporting and advancing our members and mission.

Tuesday morning kicked off with the Health in Action 5K, where GCBAA staff and members joined a crowd of early risers for a run along the bay in San Diego. This spirit of participation carried through the entire week, with members actively engaging in education sessions, show floor conversations, and industry initiatives.

A highlight came during the GCBAA General Membership Meeting, where outgoing President John McDonald II ceremoniously passed the gavel to incoming President

Jon O'Donnell, marking a proud moment of leadership transition. The meeting also underscored the strength of our community and the generosity that defines it, as CAT Rent and Sunbelt Rentals each made check presentations in continued support of the GCBAA Foundation. Their contributions are shining examples of the “Buy From Within” spirit, reinforcing the value of members supporting members.

Later that evening, GCBAA proudly hosted the Opening Reception welcoming nearly 500 attendees — including our colleagues from the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA), sponsored by The Toro Company — for an energetic evening of networking and reconnection.

A true standout again this year was Golf’s Sustainability Showcase, positioned front and center at the entrance of the convention center. Attendees had to walk through this immersive display of sustainable innovation on their way into the show — a brilliant reminder of our industry’s forward-thinking focus. Special

thanks to the dedicated sponsors, volunteers, and project and presenting partners who helped bring this vision to life.

The trade show days on Wednesday and Thursday offered exceptional opportunities to visit with members, connect with prospects, and share ideas that are shaping the future of golf construction and course management. The energy on the floor was contagious, reinforcing the value of in-person collaboration.

And while the weather held out all week, a light rain on Thursday evening marked a fitting end as the Sustainability Showcase was disassembled and we waved goodbye to sunny San Diego.

To our members, volunteers, sponsors, and friends — thank you. Your support fuels GCBAA’s mission and helps us continue building a better game. We can’t wait to see you in Orlando for the 2026 GCSAA Conference and Trade Show as we celebrate GCSAA’s Centennial and keep pushing the industry forward.

On April 30 - May 2, the golf industry returned to Washington D.C. for the 17th annual National Golf Day, conducted by the American Golf Industry Coalition.

The event generated media coverage, social media engagement, and industry participation, effectively delivering key messages about golf's $102 billion economic impact, 2 million jobs, and growing participation across diverse demographics.

The three-day program included a keynote discussion with Jake Sherman, founder of Punchbowl News, a congressional reception at the Dirksen Senate Office Building featuring remarks from key legislators, and a conversation with NBC Sports' Steve Sands. 2024 SOUTH FLORIDA REGIONAL Meeting Recap – Sunseeker Resort

The 2024 GCBAA South Florida Regional Meeting was held at the stunning new Sunseeker Resort in Charlotte Harbor, Florida, offering breathtaking sunsets, beautiful waterfront views, and a firstclass experience from start to finish. Members, sponsors, and friends of the association gathered to connect, reflect, and celebrate the close of another strong year—earning this meeting its unofficial title as the GCBAA Christmas Party.

The gathering was more than just business and networking—it was a time to pause and

honor a hero. Before the meeting began, we joined together in a moment of remembrance for Sergeant Elio Diaz of Charlotte County, who tragically lost his life earlier that week in the line of duty during a routine traffic stop. Sergeant Diaz was a husband, father of four, and a proud public servant. His dedication to his family, community, and fellow officers will not be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers remain with all who knew and loved him.

This year’s event wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors—thank you for helping us

bring the GCBAA community together in such a memorable setting. Your continued commitment to the association and to our shared mission is deeply appreciated.

As we reflect on the accomplishments of 2024, we also look forward with excitement to the future. Mark your calendars for December 16–18, 2025, when we will gather again for the South Florida Regional Meeting at the historic and elegant Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida. We can’t wait to see you there!

HONORING THE LEGACY OF JOHNSON GOLF COURSE BUILDERS: A CELEBRATION OF Marty and Bobbi Johnson

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NEB. – On Friday, March 21, the Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA), alongside family, friends, and industry colleagues, gathered at Covington Links Golf Course to honor the remarkable legacy of Martin E. “Marty” Johnson Jr. and Bobbi Johnson. Hosted in the very community they helped shape, the celebration paid tribute to a lifetime of dedication to the game of golf.

Founded in 1964, Johnson Golf Course Builders has been a cornerstone in the development of affordable and accessible golf throughout the Midwest. Over six decades, Marty and Bobbi have been instrumental in

the completion of more than 300 golf course projects across nine states—including Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming, and Missouri. Their reputation for quality, community-focused design and construction made them leaders not only in their field, but in the expansion of golf into rural and underserved regions.

Their impact extended beyond the physical landscapes. As proud members of the GCBAA from 1991 to 2013, the Johnson's helped shape the direction of the golf course construction industry for more than 20 years. Their philosophy centered on making golf attainable for everyone—working hand in hand

with developers to create affordable, wellconstructed courses that welcomed players of all skill levels.

As owners of Covington Links Golf Course, the Johnson's embodied their mission on and off the course. Their work and passion have served as a bridge between generations of golfers, builders, and communities. It was only fitting that the evening’s celebration took place there—at a course where their influence could be felt in every tee and green.

During the event, heartfelt stories and reflections were shared. Their grandson, Noah Uhing, captured the spirit of the evening, saying, “Oh, it means a lot. They spent a good amount of time of their life in the golf industry, and they’ve really pushed it forward and done a whole lot for the industry.”

Justin Apel, Executive Director of the GCBAA, highlighted their legacy: “They would work with developers to find affordable golf and build phenomenal courses, giving golfers an entry point to start the game. They have truly changed the landscape of the Midwest with the courses they built in these small communities.”

A memorable photo from the evening captured Roy Wilson of Landscapes Unlimited, Marty and Bobbi Johnson, and GCBAA Executive Director Justin Apel—representing decades of industry leadership and collaboration.

The GCBAA is proud to have been part of this meaningful tribute. Marty and Bobbi’s legacy will continue to resonate through every fairway they touched and every life they inspired. Their story is not only one of construction and design, but of vision, community, and unwavering commitment to growing the game of golf.

Roy Wilson, Landscapes Unlimited; Marty & Bobbi Johnson, and Justin Apel, GCBAA Executive Director

2024 GCBAA Summer Meeting

LINKING UP ON THE COAST: 2024 GCBAA SUMMER MEETING WRAP-UP

Perfect weather, picturesque views, and playful sea lions — what more could we ask for? Monterey, California, provided an enjoyable setting for this year’s GCBAA Summer Meeting, where members came together to “Link Up on the Coast” for a memorable few days filled with networking, education, comradery, and fun.

From the moment the event began, the energy was electric. Attendees embraced the theme wholeheartedly, forging new connections and rekindling old ones, all while enjoying the scenic charm of the Monterey coastline. And let’s not forget about our unexpected but amusing companions—sea lions! Whether they were lounging on the rocks or barking in the background, they added an extra touch of humor to the experience (though they may have missed the networking memo).

The event opened with the GCBAA Board of Directors Meeting in the John Steinbeck Board Room, where key discussions set the foundation for the week. Soon after, attendees gathered at the Fairway Foyer to check in,

collect badges, and reconnect with familiar faces and settle in prior to the evening’s events.

The “Buy From Within” Reception on the Plaza provided the first opportunity to build meaningful connections within our community. Conversations flowed as attendees shared stories, goals, and laughs under the warm California sky. Dinner in the Cypress Ballroom capped off the day with a delicious spread and

great company, setting the stage for the packed agenda ahead.

On Wednesday, resort casual was the attire of the day, as attendees shared their time between education sessions and the Member

Benefit Expo. Meanwhile, spouses and guests enjoyed sightseeing, and some experienced a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

The educational program was as diverse as it was insightful, beginning with Matthew Bertram's presentation on “The Digital Fairway,” which shed light on how smart technologies are transforming golf course operations. From staffing strategies presented by Julius Rhodes to environmental policies outlined by Hunter Pates, the morning was filled with actionable takeaways.

In the afternoon, Kelly Merbler inspired attendees with a session on building great company cultures, followed by updates from our industry partners, including ASGCA and GCSAA. The day concluded with legal insights from Andrew Myers, PC on employment law changes affecting our industry, including E-Verify.

After the sessions, attendees reconvened at the Central Plaza Reception to relax, network, and enjoy another beautiful Monterey evening. Conversations continued into the night, fostering the sense of comradery that makes GCBAA events so special.

Thursday brought out everyone’s competitive spirit, as participants sported their golf attire and headed to The Hay at Pebble Beach for the highly anticipated Short Course Shootout. Modeled after the Ryder Cup format, the 9-hole par-3 course offered a stunning setting for friendly competition.

With orange and green hats signaling team affiliation, participants teed off, competing in a mix of skills contests, including Hole-in-One and putting competitions. The day was filled with both laughter and intense rivalries, but in the end, The Orange Team emerged victorious, claiming bragging rights—at least until next year!

Awards were handed out as the event drew to a close, and the buses returned everyone to Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa, where new memories had been made, and connections strengthened.

Reflecting on our time in Monterey, it’s clear that this event embodied everything that makes GCBAA special: networking, learning, friendship, and fun. Thank you to everyone who attended, competed, and contributed to making “Link Up on the Coast” a success, as well as to our sponsors, whose support makes events like this possible.

We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming regional event or the 2026 GCBAA Winter Meeting/GCSAA Conference & Trade Show in Orlando, FL. Until then, here’s to new connections, new ideas, and new memories!

L-R: GCBAA Executive Justin Apel, GCBAA President John McDonald II, GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans, GCSAA President Jeff White, and GCBAA President-Elect Jon O’Donnell at the GCBAA Summer Meeting in Monterey, CA.

IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE

John McDonald II GCBAA IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT

As we wrapped up another successful summer meeting last year in Monterey, I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to each of you who made the journey to join us. The 2024 Summer Meeting in Monterey was nothing short of extraordinary. We had all the makings of a great meeting, vibrant energy, camaraderie, cocktails, great education, fun golf, and my personal favorite, cool temps in August. For those who couldn’t be with us, please know that you were missed, and we look forward to seeing you at our future events.

This year's meeting was a remarkable success, and much of that success is owed to our incredible sponsors. It is your support that enables us to continue hosting these awesome events, and we are very grateful for your contributions. A special shout-out to the sponsors for making everything possible—from the educational sessions, our mini tradeshow booths, and for the unforgettable moments on the golf course.

Speaking of golf, the "Ryder Cup" style format for the Short Course Shootout at

The Hay was undoubtedly one of the most memorable highlights in our association's golf tournament history. I know for one young man that won the Dirt Mover Award it will be a memory that lasts a long time. The event was filled with friendly competition, good laughs, a heck of a putting course, and some trash talking that brought out the best in all of us. It’s moments like these that remind us of the strong bonds we share and the fun we have together, both on and off the course.

I’d also like to extend a huge thank you to our Meetings Committee members and Board of Directors—Matt Lohmann, Jon Truttmann, and Jon O'Donnell—for their tireless efforts in organizing such a fantastic golf outing and guiding staff for an incredible event overall. Your dedication and hard work behind the scenes do not go unnoticed, and we are incredibly grateful for all you do; working up to the last minute to make sure that event was as fun and enjoyable as it could be for our members. Along with Board members, these events would not happen without the incredible efforts of our GCBAA staff, volunteer members who help when called upon, and the support staff that graciously help with the administration of these events. A special thanks to Nancy and Dennis Seelhoff, and Trevor Wustrack for their continuous dedication and willingness to lend a hand. Your efforts make a world of difference and embody the spirit of our GCBAA family.

On top of all the fun, games, and socializing we were able to do we had a great educational lineup. Wednesday was phenomenal. The sessions had meaningful and pertinent topics. We hope these provided valuable insights and learning opportunities for everyone who attended. If you have great ideas on future education topics that can benefit the association, be sure to let the office know.

Two other highlights of the meeting that

I want to make sure were not missed are the transfer of funds to the GCBAA Foundation and the acknowledgment of Manny Pina for his services to the Board. First, it was with great pride that the GCBAA was able to transfer $250,000 of funds to the GCBAA Foundation. As we close out the Sticks for Kids initiative and look to move our foundation’s focus to another cause it is a great feeling to know they are going in with the funds to be able to do great things. Second, we commend Manny Pina for his years he spent on the Board of Directors. I can tell you he had this association’s best interest at heart with his service on the Board. Thanks Manny, we appreciate you.

One of the most significant takeaways for me personally was witnessing the incredible support and unity among our members. I speak on behalf of our staff when I say thank you for your patience, understanding, guidance, and assistance throughout the week. The way everyone rallied around one another and supported each other, including our staff, truly shows what it means to be a part of the GCBAA family. We are competitors in the business world but come together at these events as a united front. That unity shows the power and impact we have as an association.

As we look forward to the upcoming events, I am filled with excitement and anticipation for what’s to come. I cannot wait to see you all again soon. Stay tuned for more information about these events. If possible, make it to as many of these events as you can. You will see many of your fellow/friendly GCBAA members at them.

And finally, “hats” off to each and every one of you—whether you were a hole sponsor, hole-in-one contest sponsor, volunteer, or green/orange hat team (even though the orange team took home the tournament win this year). Your presence, participation, and spirit are what make the GCBAA truly special. Thank you for being a part of our association and for your continued commitment to our shared mission.

Thank you all for each and every part you play in our association. It is what makes us the best association in golf.

Sincerely,

John McDonald II
President John McDonald II and Outgoing Board Member Manny Pina with the plaque presentation at the Summer Meeting.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR NOTES

Let’s get the obvious out of the way— I’ve already fallen on my sword and taken full responsibility for the delay between EarthShaping Newsletter issues. Yes, it’s been a while. Yes, this is the longest gap we’ve ever had. But now that I’ve sufficiently self-deprecated and accepted the blame, we can move on to more important matters— like celebrating the incredible progress our Association has made.

Throughout this issue, you’ll find articles expanding on some of our proudest accomplishments, and I know I’m going to miss a few in this brief overview—so I’ll apologize in advance. One milestone that deserves spotlight attention is our continued partnership as Presenting Partners with the GCSAA Conference and Trade Show. Simply put, our members have made us incredibly proud.

THIS COMMUNITY BOARD WILL SERVE AS A CENTRAL HUB TO KEEP YOU INFORMED

From the sheer growth of the trade show to the ever-expanding education offerings and the unmatched networking opportunities, the evolution of this event may be one of the most impactful in its long and storied history. But even more powerful than the numbers is the strength of the GCBAA network—the camaraderie, professionalism, and passion of those who attend, exhibit, and support this show are unmatched.

Equally significant is the strong pentagon of partnership we’ve developed with GCSAA, ASGCA, USGA, NGCOA, and NGF. While each of us represents distinct membership bases and missions, together we form a united front— shaping the game’s future while protecting the foundation of our individual associations. (No more sappy shape analogies after this—I promise.)

On to some fun and forward-thinking initiatives that are already taking root and showing promise…

We’ve seen a growing number of youth asking how they can get a start in golf course construction. Their curiosity reminded us of

how many leaders in our industry trace their beginnings to a simple opportunity—someone giving them a chance to learn, work, and grow under a GCBAA member’s wing. That shared experience led to a lightbulb moment during a recent Executive Meeting (and more than a few cups of coffee): what if we could create a platform to connect aspiring future professionals with seasoned members looking to invest in the next generation?

Enter the GCBAA Career Development Portal.

While we’re intentionally walking before we run, we’re already lacing up for the next race. If you haven’t already, take time to explore this new program—especially if you’re looking to find (or help create) the next great GCBAA member.

Another program that’s already proving its worth—and that we really wish we had years ago—is our Construction Job Board. Historically, we’ve shared project notices via email blasts when architects, municipalities, superintendents, and others wanted to promote renovation opportunities to our membership. While helpful, it relied heavily on timing and luck.

Now, with dozens of new opportunities coming in each week—from cart path repairs and bridge replacements to bulkhead installations and specialized materials contracts—we knew it was time for a dedicated clearinghouse. The new Job Board consolidates these notices in one convenient place, making it easier for members to browse, pursue, and respond. Read more about it in this issue, and don’t forget to subscribe—because we’re just getting started.

And speaking of communication…

We share your frustration with spam, phishing, impersonation, and the general rise of cyber nonsense. We’re actively working to improve the security and convenience of our communications. One major step forward is our GCBAA Community Board. Think of it as your digital bulletin board: a real-time, secure

landing page for the latest announcements, urgent updates, and ongoing programs. Email will still play a role—but this Community Board will serve as a central hub to keep you informed on your schedule and from a trusted source: your GCBAA team.

In short, we’re aiming to streamline how we deliver value to you and give you confidence in the information you receive from us. Be patient as we roll out these new tools—but know our goal is to help you organize your GCBAA involvement, stay protected from fraud, and stay better connected.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I want to thank each and every one of you for the ongoing support you’ve given not just to me, but to Mychelle, our staff, and our families. Whether you’ve helped out at an event, volunteered time, shared feedback, or just sent a kind note—we see you, and we are truly grateful.

This association exists because of you—and for you. Stay in touch, and we hope to see every one of you very soon.

GCBAA FOUNDATION AND EXECUTIVE BOARD JOIN FORCES IN MINNEAPOLIS TO CULTIVATE FUTURE LEADERS IN GOLF CONSTRUCTION

The GCBAA Foundation Leadership met last Fall with the GCBAA Executive Board in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to discuss the future of our Foundation and our commitment to developing opportunities for more participation and education in the golf industry, while staying true to the organization’s core mission and initiatives. This joint meeting was the first step towards beginning a career development plan going forward.

Expanding Board Engagement and Planning for the Future

The joint board discussions focused on expanding board involvement and brainstorming strategies to meet future goals. One initiative for the Foundation Board is to solicit and add additional members. The goal is to foster greater engagement and bring fresh, diverse ideas aligned with our mission. This search will include our current GCBAA membership, as well as potential outside resources such as USGA, GCSSA, ASGCA and others.

As well as seating additional board members, we plan to also look at expanding our “Sticks for Kids moniker. For over 25 years, our program has introduced youth to golf by providing equipment and support to programs worldwide. Building on that legacy, we aim to broaden its focus to nurture future builders, suppliers, architects, and superintendents.

This expansion includes working with the Association collaborating on internship programs, scholarships, and potentially subsidizing costs for participating members. These internships will provide hands-on experience across various industry areas—from construction to management— preparing the next generation with the skills needed to advance golf’s future.

Other conversations centered on enhancing the Sticks For Kids program and exploring new initiatives, such as career path development and education outreach programs to coincide.

Our vision is to unite members and partners in a collaborative effort to ensure the long-term success of these programs. By providing industry-wide exposure and educational opportunities, our goal is to secure the growth of golf—not just as a sport, but as a sustainable industry.

This collaborative effort between the Association and Foundation is a crucial step toward creating lasting opportunities for the next generation.

Monterey Summer Meeting Highlights and Generous Contributions

I would be remiss if I did not also take time to thank our generous sponsors and contributors. At the 2024 Summer Meeting in Monterey, California, the Foundation received a heartfelt boost with a $250,000 donation from GCBAA. This contribution was largely made possible by member participation in partnership incentive rebate programs, a valuable benefit to our membership.

The Foundation also extends its gratitude to Travelers Haven, and Hotel Engine for their generous contributions, which are instrumental in supporting ongoing efforts as well.

We also received a generous donation from the Annual Rich Mullen Memorial Golf Outing. We want to especially thank Rich’s family and friends for continuing to support not only our mission, but Rich’s vision in supporting youth golf.

These funds from the GCBAA and partnership incentive rebate programs will support our initiatives and mission-driven projects going forward, as will the continued efforts of “Buy from Within” directive.

This renewed collaborative effort between the Association and Foundation is a crucial step toward creating lasting opportunities for the next generation and ensuring the continued growth and sustainability of the golf industry, for years to come.

GCBAA ON THE GO: Building Connections and Champions

The GCBAA team has been making waves across the industry, seizing unique opportunities to connect, advocate, and inspire both members and allies alike. Here’s a quick recap of some recent highlights!

National Golf Day 2024 – Lobbying and Service

In an impactful week in Washington, D.C., GCBAA staff joined fellow members, industry partners, and allied groups to lobby on behalf of our industry and respective states. Beyond the legislative work, we rolled up our sleeves for a community service project, beautifying both the National Mall and a local golf course, showcasing the GCBAA commitment to community and service.

US Adaptive Open at Sand Creek Station

July took us to Newton, Kansas, where we witnessed something remarkable at the US Adaptive Open. Watching players overcome obstacles with sheer talent and resilience was humbling. As we connected with partners like the GCSAA, National Alliance for Accessible Golf, and the USGA, the sense of purpose in our industry was undeniable, proving yet again that golf is for everyone.

Exploring Karsten Creek – Home of the Cowboys

Staff headed to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for a close-up look at the newly renovated Karsten

Creek Golf Course, training ground for the Oklahoma State Cowboys golf team. Alongside our EPIC Creative partners and other GCBAA members, we marveled at the incredible technology updates, like geothermal greens, and bunker designs that challenge even the most seasoned golfers. The course’s motto, "Don’t Ring the Bell," a nod to Navy SEAL training, is a powerful reminder to persevere—a spirit that resonates with us not only on the golf course but also in our lives and work.

Heat-related Illnesses

Overview

Heat and humidity can cause several different types of heatrelated illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Knowing the signs and symptoms of each type of heatrelated illness will help to keep you safe on the job. Normally, the body has ways of keeping itself cool by allowing heat to escape through the skin and evaporating sweat (perspiration).

However, if the body does not cool down properly or does not cool down enough, a person may suffer a heat-related illness. Anyone is susceptible to a heatrelated illness, but the very young and elderly are at the greatest risk. Beyond that, heat-related illnesses can become serious or even deadly if unattended.

Types of Heat-related Emergencies

These are three types of heatrelated emergencies:

Heat Cramps are muscular pains and spasms caused by heavy exertion. This is generally the result of a loss of water and salt through sweating.

Heat Exhaustion is caused by fluid loss and decreased blood flow to your vital organs. This condition can produce flu-like symptoms.

Heat Stroke is the most serious heat-related emergency and occurs when the body’s internal cooling system has failed. This is a lifethreatening condition requiring immediate and aggressive action.

The Heat Index

The heat index is a method that combines air temperature and relative humidity to determine an apparent temperature. The human body normally cools itself through perspiration (or sweating), when the water in sweat evaporates and carries heat away from the body.

However, when the relative humidity is high, the evaporation rate of the water is reduced. This means heat is removed from the body at a lower rate, causing it to retain more heat than it would in dry air. The heat index is important to know when doing physical work outdoors, as higher combinations of heat and humidity can make the body more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

Preventing Heat Related Emergencies

Know the signs and symptoms of the various types of heat-related illnesses. Take time to monitor yourself and be aware of your co-workers. If working outdoors, avoid long periods of direct sunlight. Use cooling fans to keep air circulating around your body. This helps aid your natural cooling process. Wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothes when working in warm and humid environments. Drink primarily non-caffeinated fluids. Caffeine actually works against you because it is a diuretic and will cause you to lose more fluids than you are ingesting. Drinking water or other electrolyte products are best. Never wait until you feel thirsty to start hydrating – you are well on your way to becoming dehydrated when you feel thirsty. It is critical to your overall health to stay properly hydrated, especially when working in hot and humid environments.

Heat-related Emergency Guide

The first step is always prevention. In hot and humid environments, always wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothes, take frequent breaks, drink lots of fluids, avoid caffeine (coffee and soda) and alcohol and do not stay in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

Heat Cramps

Heat cramps are muscular pain and spasms due to heavy exertion. Generally thought to be caused by a loss of water and salt through sweating.

Heat cramps usually occur during outdoor activities or strenuous activities. Can occur even when it does not seem very hot or humid.

Signs & Symptoms

▪ Leg cramps

▪ Muscle spasms

▪ Stiff abdomen

▪ Weak, faint or dizzy

▪ Stiff abdomen

▪ Possible nausea

▪ Normal mental status

Heat Cramps

▪ Move to a cooler location

▪ Seek medical help if victim loses consciousness

▪ Drink plenty of fluids

Signs & Symptoms

Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion is caused by fluid loss causing blood flow to decrease to vital organs. As a result of dehydration, victims often complain of flu-like symptoms hours after exposure.

Heat exhaustion is serious but not life threatening, if identified and treated properly. Without treatment, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke.

Signs & Symptoms

▪ Skin is cool and moist

▪ Excessive perspiration

▪ Pupils are dilated (large)

▪ Body temp near normal

▪ Headache

▪ Weak, dizzy or faint

▪ Disorientation

▪ Dark and decreased urine

Treatment

Heat Exhaustion

▪ Get medical attention

▪ Move victim to a cool area

▪ Lay victim on their back and elevate feet 8-10 inches

▪ If conscious, give water every 15 minutes

▪ Cool by fanning or spraying with cool water

General Guidelines and Reminders

Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is the most serious type of heat-related illness that is LIFE THREATENING and requires IMMEDIATE care.

Heat stroke occurs when the body’s heat regulating system fails. Body temperatures raise to a point that brain damage and death may result, unless the body is cooled very quickly.

Signs & Symptoms

▪ Skin is hot and dry

▪ No sweating

▪ Pupils are very small

▪ Victim is confused or unable to think straight

▪ Possible seizures

▪ Body temperature is very high (can be as high as 105° F)

Heat Stroke

▪ Call 911 immediately

▪ Move victim to a cool area

▪ Loosen clothing

▪ Douse body with water

▪ Apply ice packs or wet clothes to neck, armpits and groin

Do not underestimate the seriousness of heat-related illnesses. Do not give medication to reduce fever and do not allow the victim to drink any caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. In heat-related emergencies, do not overlook other medical conditions that might be complicated by excessive heat. When in doubt, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Mental Health IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: RECOGNIZING SIGNS AND OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Mental health is a topic that's becoming increasingly important, and for good reason. It's something that affects everyone, no matter where they work. In the construction industry, where the work is often demanding and the pressure high, mental health challenges can be particularly tough. But by recognizing the signs and offering support, we can make a big difference.

Understanding the Situation

The numbers around mental health and suicide in the construction industry are concerning. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”), construction workers have one of the highest suicide rates among all industries. In the United States, male construction workers have a suicide rate of 49.4 per 100,000 workers, much higher than the national average for men in other professions. This trend isn't limited to the U.S.; similar patterns are seen in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. For women in construction, the challenges can be even greater. While men make up the majority of the workforce, women often face additional stressors like discrimination and harassment. According to a report by the Chartered Institute of Building (“CIOB”), women in construction experience higher levels of workplace stress, anxiety, and depression than their male counterparts.

Spotting the Signs

Being aware of the signs that someone might be struggling with their mental health is the first step in offering help. Here are things to look out for:

1. Changes in Behavior: If someone suddenly becomes more irritable, withdraws from social interactions, or their work performance changes, these could be signs of distress.

2. Physical Symptoms: Mental health issues often show up physically too. Look for complaints about fatigue, frequent headaches, or unexplained aches and pains.

3. Mood Swings: Extreme changes in mood, such as increased anxiety, depression, or anger, can be indicators of underlying issues.

4. Substance Use: An increase in alcohol or drug use can be a way for some people to cope with stress or emotional pain.

5. Talk of Death or Suicide: Any mention of wanting to die or feeling hopeless should be taken very seriously and addressed immediately.

Overcoming the Challenges

Even though the statistics can be alarming, there's a lot that can be done to improve mental health in the construction industry. Here are strategies that can help:

1. Encourage Open Conversations: Create a culture where people feel safe talking about their mental health without fear of judgment can make a big difference.

2. Provide Resources: Offer access to mental health resources, like Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), counseling services, and hotlines. Make sure everyone knows how to access these resources is also important.

3. Education and Training: Provide mental health training for all employees, including management, to help everyone recognize the signs of mental distress and know how to respond.

4. Promote Work-Life Balance: Encourage a healthy balance between work and personal life. This can mean flexible working hours, regular breaks, and manageable workloads.

5. Peer Support Programs: Implement peer support programs that give workers a chance to share their experiences and support each other. These programs can be particularly effective because they build on the camaraderie within the industry.

6. Leadership Support: Show company leaders and supervisors care about mental health. By leading with empathy and providing support, leaders and supervisors can set a positive example for the whole organization.

Moving Forward

The mental health challenges in the construction industry are significant, but they're not insurmountable. Recognizing the signs of mental health struggles and taking steps to offer support create a healthier and more supportive environment for all construction workers. Each step we take towards promoting mental wellbeing brings us closer to a more resilient workforce. Let's work together to not only build projects, but a foundation of support and understanding for one another.

MONEY WELL SPENT – Or Not?

In an era of steadily rising costs for golf course maintenance and renovation, the best way to control expenses and get value for your money is to make sure you are investing, not just spending.

Everything is site specific, which is why it can be so problematic when courses try to emulate other facilities. What could be a wise investment in one situation might well be characterized as delusional thinking in another. No matter what the circumstances are, every course should think critically about how they spend money today and how they plan to spend it in the future. The golf business is booming right now – whether this is the “new normal” or a high before the fall, every course should take steps now to be better positioned for what might come. The following are some good, and not-so-good, ways to invest for an uncertain future.

Investing in Automation

A good example of a wise investment can be found at the municipally owned and operated Buffalo Dunes Golf Club in Garden City, Kansas. In 2020, superintendent Clay Payne started a modest program of incorporating semiautonomous mowers into his daily maintenance. The fleet has now grown to 14 Husqvarna 550s with a 9.5-inch cutting width

that mow roughs, fairways and tees. They work around the clock, even during play, which helps him keep his maintenance budget to $700,000 annually while accommodating 20,000-25,000 rounds each season on one of the most highly regarded public courses in the state.

Planning Projects Carefully

One surprisingly common mistake is not developing a long-range master plan. The plan itself is a relatively modest investment, anywhere from $30,000 to $250,000, which is a fraction of the cost of future projects. The plan is not a commitment to a defined construction schedule; it simply establishes priorities and likely costs, helping courses avoid mistakes. For example, if a course is planning a bunker renovation that involves major changes to the existing design, they should hold off on an irrigation project until it can be coordinated with the new bunkers – or at least the new system should be designed with enough flexibility to account for future needs. Otherwise, you could be making costly adjustments to a brand-new system!

Rethinking the Routine

Aside from projects and equipment investments, courses should always be looking at their routine maintenance to see

if there are ways to spend time and money more efficiently. Don’t get stuck doing things simply because “that’s the way we’ve always done it.” Simplifying mowing patterns can save time and money that can be invested elsewhere. At most courses, eliminating the intermediate cut between fairway and primary rough could save $10,000 to $20,000 per year while freeing up labor for other tasks. Flower beds, tree plantings, ornate paver projects and fountains are just a few examples of capital "improvement" projects that add nothing to the golf experience, divert resources from the maintenance budget, and take away from the bottom line. Meanwhile, meaningful investments such as tree removal, irrigation enhancements and drainage projects are ignored or put off.

Investing in Your Team

When it comes to long-term investments, promoting the education of promising young staffers might have the highest return of any approach. That’s what motivated the California Golf Club of San Francisco to invest in the future of one of its staff members, Javier Campos. The club paid for him to attend the turfgrass certificate program at Rutgers University and Campos continued working on the course when he wasn’t in school. He gradually moved up the career ladder and, eventually, took the head superintendent position. The club’s investment in the superintendent and their team produces a mutual relationship of long-term commitment that reduces turnover. Investing, not just spending.

Everything in golf course maintenance and renovation seems to be getting more expensive, so make sure that the money you spend delivers plenty of bang for the buck.

FROM BOSTON'S BIG DIG TO GLOBAL GREENS: THE HANDS-ON LEADERSHIP OF Gary Kessener

Gary Kessener, originally from Hingham, MA, has built a long and distinguished career in golf course construction. Born in Weymouth on May 7, 1959, Gary is currently a Project Manager with NMP Golf Construction, currently overseeing the complete renovation of the Quail Ridge 18-hole golf course, designed by architects Jason Straka and Dana Fry. His past projects include bunker and tee renovations in Bulk Hills, PA, and two full 18-hole renovations at Pine Hills and Audubon in Memphis, TN.

Gary's journey in construction began in California, where he worked as a Supervisor for Southwest Growers and Landscaping, focusing on commercial landscape projects. His first venture into golf course construction was in

1978, managing a 9-hole executive course at Bixby Village in Long Beach, CA. From early on, Gary’s brother-in-law inspired him to take on leadership roles, guiding him toward his future as a Project Manager. One of his defining career moments came during an interview with Golfplan, leading to international work on projects across Europe and Asia.

Over the years, Gary has managed several high-profile projects, including Granite Links in Quincy, MA, and Ferry Point Park in New York. Internationally, he has been involved in projects in France, Portugal, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, and Korea. Of all his achievements, Granite Links remains a standout. The 540-acre project involved the construction of a 27-hole golf course, sports facilities, and more, all while transforming former landfills using over 13 million tons of fill from Boston’s "Big Dig." The complexity of managing regulations across two municipalities, steep slopes, and wetland areas made this a career-defining project for Gary.

Gary’s leadership style is hands-on. He spends most of his time in the field, working closely with his team to ensure the highest quality standards. His ability to create a collaborative work environment, from daily planning meetings to monthly BBQs, helps foster team morale and commitment. Key to his success is an experienced team of operators, laborers, and surveyors, with whom he shares clear communication and direction each day.

Like any large-scale project, challenges are part of the job. For Gary, the logistics of managing materials, equipment, and workforce scheduling are among the most significant hurdles. His solution? Always have a

backup plan. Whether dealing with equipment issues or site obstacles, adaptability is crucial in keeping the project moving forward.

Gary also embraces new technologies like GPS, AutoCAD, drones, and site-tracking systems to monitor progress and improve project efficiency. These tools, combined with his deep industry knowledge and straightforward approach with clients, have earned him a strong reputation. His commitment to clear, honest communication builds trust and realistic expectations throughout the project’s lifecycle.

For Gary, the most rewarding aspect of being a Project Manager is the relationships he forms with clients and teams. His proudest moments come when he returns to a completed project and is met with respect and recognition for the work he and his team has done.

Looking to the future, Gary sees continued advancement in technology as key to the evolution of project management. Drones, in particular, are becoming essential for calculating earthworks, and computergenerated modeling is streamlining the planning and execution process. He emphasizes the importance of staying adaptable, learning from the ground up, and maintaining a calm demeanor in the face of challenges.

Gary’s philosophy in work and life is simple: “Get it done and enjoy doing it. Life should be enjoyable, even at work.” This mindset has guided him through a rewarding career, full of challenges, triumphs, and meaningful relationships.

Rod Lingle, LONGTIME GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT, BERMUDAGRASS EXPERT AND INVENTOR OF MACH 1 ULTRADWARF, WINS

USGA GREEN SECTION AWARD

CONTACT: STACIE ZINN ROBERTS, WHAT’S YOUR AVOCADO? MARKETING & PR STACIE@WHATSYOURAVOCADO.COM, 360-941-4595

SAN DIEGO, CA (WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2025): Rod Lingle, CGCS, inventor of Mach 1 Ultradwarf Bermuda, GreensPerfection greensmower brushes and The Lingle System of ultradwarf greens management, was named the 2025 USGA Green Section Award Winner this morning during the Opening Ceremonies and General Session of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), held in San Diego.

Lingle was honored for his lifetime dedication to the golf industry. He was nominated by Chris Hartwiger, USGA Green Section’s director of agronomy. In his nomination, Hartwiger described Lingle this way:

“I can say with confidence that through all Rodney’s work over the years, his love towards fellow turfgrass superintendents and professionals is his greatest contribution to the industry. He used what he had and what he developed for the greatest and highest good of those that sought his counsel. He provided them with knowledge and he gave them the courage to go back to their golf courses and do things differently. These superintendents will all say in one way or another that they wouldn’t be where they are today if it were not for Rodney Lingle.”

Lingle is a Certified golf course superintendent with more than 50 years of experience. He invested 37 years at Memphis Country Club in Tennessee, and another six at Escondido Golf Club in Texas.

Lingle holds two golf-related patents. Mach 1 Ultradwarf Bermuda is a variety of bermudagrass that delivers extremely fast yet true putting greens, (grown by Modern Turf in Rembert, South Carolina). Its putting quality is on par with bentgrass greens but with all of the heat tolerance and drought resistance of a bermudagrass. Mach 1 Ultradwarf is currently used worldwide on golf course greens. It is also suitable for tees, as well as grass tennis courts and croquet lawns.

The GreensPefection brush is a mower attachment that lifts the grass blades just before cutting and helps control grain. For several years, the Toro company used it in their mower units, and is now available for John Deere mowers through their dealerships.

He may be best known as the developer of The Lingle System, an ultradwarf bermudagrass management protocol now considered the standard for high-quality ultradwarf greens management. In tandem with the USGA, he taught this protocol to hundreds of golf course industry professionals through USGA seminars and field days.

He also collaborated with Dr. Jim Brosnan at the University of Tennessee to advance research into off-types in ultradwarf bermudagrasses.

“I’m very honored to be in the group of people who received this award before me, especially since most of them are researchers or Ph.d.’s,” Lingle said. As is characteristic of Lingle, he qualifies the accomplishments he achieved—especially advancements in ultradwarf greens management—as a team effort. He noted that teaching the system he created with his staff at Memphis Country Club was a product of that group’s contributions.

“It's just nice to know that what we did

helped to improve the game of golf. The way I think about it is, that work benefits all the people who play golf, and all of the clubs with ultradwarf greens. Who it really helped the most were the small clubs that could achieve some phenomenally good greens with ultradwarf bermuda. They did what we taught them to do, and they would have never had that quality of greens if it hadn't been for us and the USGA. And, you know, it's humbling. It's an honor. But I'm glad that the USGA thought enough of what we did to recognize it, because I do think it really helped a lot of people.”

The USGA's Green Section Award honors an individual's distinguished service to the game through work with turfgrass. Presented annually since 1961, the USGA Green Section Award recognizes an individual’s distinguished service to the game of golf through his or her work with turfgrass, including research, maintenance, and other areas that positively impact the landscape upon which golf is played.

Through the work of its Green Section, which was established in 1920, the USGA is one of the world’s foremost authorities on turfgrass management, as well as research, development, and promotion of environmentally friendly practices and a more sustainable game.

ABOUT MACH 1

Mach 1 Ultradwarf is a premium greensgrade grass that delivers golf’s purest, fastest bermudagrass putting greens, most comparable to bentgrass. Mach 1’s finer leaf blades, shorter

leaf length, and closer internodes create exceptionally dense putting surfaces that putt true with no swirling grain. Some of the world’s most elite clubs have selected Mach 1 to differentiate themselves and deliver the highest quality greens possible for their members and guests. Click here for a full list of Mach 1 golf courses. Mach 1 is also suitable for use on golf course tees, grass tennis courts, croquet courts, and lawn-bowling surfaces. It is produced exclusively in the United States by Modern Turf, with a foundation farm in Rembert, South Carolina, and is represented outside of the U.S. by Atlas Turf International. DLF LAUNCHES NEW Corporate Strategy and Purpose

AL BANY, ORE. (JUNE 12, 2025) – DLF has just launched a new corporate purpose and a new group strategy. Both initiatives mark an important step in DLF's development as a global seed company and emphasize increased interaction with the outside world, customer focus, corporate culture, operational optimization, and the development of employees and the organization.

“DLF is a forward-looking global company with operations on five continents and employees in 22 countries. We conduct research, produce, and sell seeds worldwide. That comes with responsibility. With our new purpose and strategy, we are creating a shared strategic focus. We will be stronger, respond faster, and take the lead in meeting the demands of the future – from customers, the climate, and the market,” says Søren Halbye, CEO of DLF.

DLF’s new purpose is: “We enrich land, life and people through seeds and science.” This statement expresses the impact DLF strives to make for its customers, end-users, owners and the broader society. The new strategic plan, titled “Connecting to Grow”, is built on three key focus areas:

People and Culture as a driving force

“We believe that long-term success is created by people. That’s why we are making targeted investments in a shared global culture where clear values and continuous development go hand in hand – both professionally and personally,” says Halbye. The new purpose, together with DLF’s four global values, will form the foundation of a strong, shared culture and engagement across the organization. It aims to strengthen the organization, employee development, and internal cohesion. Finally, it will enhance the capacity to continue developing DLF as a business and to fulfill our societal responsibilities.”

Strengthened

market leadership

DLF is strengthening its position as a global market leader by actively developing close contact with customers and end users - and by clearly highlighting the value that plant breeding adds. The company takes pride in understanding and meeting the needs of end users. “We will strengthen our focus on documenting value for both customers and end users. When we understand their challenges, we can offer solutions that ensure our shared value creation,” says Halbye.

Efficient and standardized structures as a foundation

Another central focus of the strategy is to make DLF more scalable and efficient by streamlining structures and processes across the group. The goal is clear: to free up resources and reduce dependence on individual knowledge. “Our complexity is a natural consequence of an ambitious growth journey with the acquisition of companies. We are now well underway in simplifying, modernizing and standardizing our business – so that we are stronger and more agile to take the next step on the growth journey,” explains Halbye.

Clear direction with an eye on the future

With the strategy, DLF has set three overall objectives: To secure seeds as a high-value crop, invest in competitiveness and build a robust financial preparedness. The strategic plan runs until 2028, but the focus is also set further ahead. New species, traits and solutions will be prioritized, not least with a focus on climate change and changing consumer needs.

“Connecting to Grow is essentially about joining forces – internally and externally – to make us even stronger as a global seed company. We will grow, and we will do it wisely, sustainably and together,” concludes Halbye.

DLF STRENGTHENS Product Knowledge and Breeding Programs

ALBANY, ORE. (APRIL 8, 2025) –

DLF’s North American business unit is excited to announce the establishment of dedicated Product Knowledge Centers in Philomath, Oregon, and Port Hope, Ontario effective July 1, 2025. These centers will enhance DLF’s product education, field trials, and technical support capabilities, ensuring stronger collaboration between product management, marketing, and sales. This allows the company to better serve its customers while maintaining a strong presence in key regions.

“There are many great activities happening in Philomath and Port Hope today, and we want those activities to continue,” said DLF NA Executive Vice President, Neil Douglas. “Our vision for these centers is to prominently feature everything the DLF portfolio has to offer, from bentgrass to alfalfa to new innovations in seed enhancement. These locations are important to demonstrate the value of our product innovation, training customers and staff, and for collaborating with key industry partners.”

The Willamette Valley, being close to many of DLF’s key U.S. grower partners, is an area the

company plans to continue investing in. The Philomath and Port Hope Product Knowledge Centers will remain the host sites for DLF’s Seed Camps and ongoing customer education activities, and DLF’s new seed enhancement and operations facility in Albany, Oregon, serves as the U.S. headquarters.

As part of this move, and to advance DLF’s strategic efforts to strengthen its breeding programs and ensure long-term operational excellence, it will consolidate two independent research stations in the Pacific Northwest - Philomath, Oregon, and Touchet, Washington - into a single, robust, multispecies breeding station located in Touchet. The company sees this as a vital step toward ensuring the continued success of its breeding and product management programs.

“Unifying our programs will enhance collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and trial quality across DLF’s forage and turf species,” said DLF Executive Vice President & Chief Scientific Officer, Derek Bartlem. “A single, well-staffed station will strengthen our R&D activities and ensure we continue to deliver new high-quality forage and turf

products, while at the same time provide long-term career growth opportunities for our employees.”

Currently, both breeding stations operate independently, with a focus on different species and at minimum critical mass. By consolidating its Pacific Northwest breeding operations in Touchet, the company believes it can create a stronger, more resilient breeding station that better supports its research and development goals – all while keeping its full research and development staff. This unified breeding location complements DLF’s additional Midwest breeding station in West Salem, Wisconsin.

Duininck Golf Begins Grassing Phase AT TEPETONKA, MINNESOTA'S

NEW LONDON, MN – Duininck Golf officially commenced the grassing phase at Tepetonka, marking a significant milestone in the construction of Minnesota's newest private destination golf experience. This critical stage transforms the carefully shaped landscape into living, playable terrain as premium turf varieties begin taking root across the championship layout.

Located just 90 minutes from the Twin Cities near New London, Minnesota, Tepetonka is the vision of founder Mark Haugejorde and is being crafted by the internationally acclaimed design team OCM Golf—Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Cocking, and Ashley Mead. The course stretches across 228 acres of natural glacial moraines, featuring dramatic 100-foot elevation changes, cedarlined corridors, and the meandering Shakopee Creek coming into play on 6 of the golf holes. Lodging and hospitality overlook the 18th hole, with the creek guarding the left side and a green hanging on the edge of the creek.

"The site we're working with at Tepetonka is extraordinary. The first time we were on the property we knew Tepetonka was going to be special," said Geoff Ogilvy of OCM Golf. "It's rare to find property so naturally suited for golf that 16 of the 18 holes required minimal to no earthmoving. The course begins in the cedars, leads players out onto prairie for a dozen holes, weaves through wetlands, and then returns to the cedars. The variety of landscapes and the natural contours have allowed us to create something truly distinctive in the heart of Minnesota."

Minnesota-based Duininck Golf, renowned for their work on many top-rated private clubs throughout the country, is spearheading the construction. Owner Judd Duininck expressed his enthusiasm about the project:

"Adding a private club of this stature to the Midwest collection of epic destinations like Sand Hills, Ballyneal, Caprock Ranch, and Sutton Bay is what Minnesota needs, " said Duininck. "To build a world-class golf course in our own backyard makes it even more special. The land at Tepetonka has a natural character that architects dream about, moraines with golf holes fitting perfectly between them. When Mark called and shared his vision of this property, I knew exactly where it was, and knew it was going to be spectacular."

With 14 of the 18 holes already shaped, along with the driving range and "The Prox" short course—being designed with input from CBS Sports commentator Jim Nantz—the project is progressing rapidly and on pace for a 2026 opening.

The grassing phase represents one of the most crucial stages in golf course construction, laying the foundation for the playing surfaces that will define the Tepetonka experience for decades to come. Following this phase, the grow-in period will allow the turf to mature and establish under expert care before play begins.

Tepetonka is positioned to become a

flagship destination in the Midwest golf landscape, offering easy access from several major metropolitan areas including Minneapolis-St. Paul (90 minutes), Fargo (less than three hours), and Sioux Falls (less than three hours), with a regional airport just 20 miles north in Willmar for private travel. Upon opening in 2026, Illinois-based KemperSports will manage Tepetonka.

Women in Turf: KATIE FLOWERS LEADS THE TEXAS TURFGRASS ASSOCIATION WITH PASSION AND PURPOSE

MAY 30, 2025 – For nearly 80 years, the Texas Turfgrass Association (TTA) has provided education and research to turfgrass professionals across Texas. Since 2018, Executive Director Katie Flowers has been at the heart of this effort, focused on building connections and increasing the association’s value to members.

Finding a Place in Turfgrass

Before joining the TTA, Flowers spent 15 years in student housing, working in training and writing company handbooks. Her husband, Seth Flowers, who works in commercial landscaping and irrigation, introduced her to the industry and the TTA.

“Seth is one of the smartest people in turfgrass I know,” she said. “Through him, I started meeting TTA members and saw what a hub it was for networking and education. I saw the challenges members faced in getting commercial business. I also realized just how many people are connected to turfgrass. That made me passionate about promoting my husband’s career and others in the industry.”

When Flowers first interviewed for the Executive Director position, she faced a panel of turfgrass professionals who outlined the role’s responsibilities. She didn’t have a turf background but knew she could organize and promote.

“I’m a people person,” she said. “I knew this

was an association we had to keep going—not just because it educates, but because it’s a networking hub that’s invaluable.” She got the job and quickly saw opportunities to improve the association’s financial standing. “It was going to be a challenge,” she said. “But I was ready.”

Stepping Into Leadership

“My first year, we coined the phrase ‘peeling the onion together,’” she said. “The past Executive Director, Shirley Duble, had done a fantastic job running TTA for almost 30 years. It was a big responsibility to harness what she built, protect it and evolve alongside things like social media.”

She credits Patrick Pankratz and Mike Chandler, TTA presidents when she started, for helping her navigate the transition. “They, along with the board, were instrumental in figuring out what worked, what didn’t and how we could move forward,” she said. “It was trial and error, but over the past few years, we’ve seen real growth. People want to come back to our shows—not just for CEUs but because they know the value of our events.”

The TTA’s Executive Board includes a past president, current president and first and second vice president who handle key decisions. There are also 14 regional directors who represent different industry sectors—sod production, sports turf, lawn

care, landscape and commercial—across eastern and western Texas.

“I’ve learned to talk to so many different professionals—golf course superintendents, sports field managers, parks and rec teams, cemetery maintenance crews and more. Turfgrass touches everything.”

Building Meaningful Events

Flowers helps plan TTA’s conferences to provide education and networking. “We try to put on events that pique members’ interest but also meet our educational mission,” she said. “We also raise money for education and contribute to Texas A&M’s Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, which provides scholarships for turfgrass students.”

“Our summer conference is always at a resort to encourage members to bring their families and enjoy some vacation time,” she said. “A few years ago at Horseshoe Bay, we added a putt-putt event so members, vendors and their families could all interact. At our winter conference, we started a cornhole tournament, which has also been a big hit.”

Flowers plans to expand these events to strengthen connections. Though conference planning is demanding, meeting attendees reminds her why the work matters.

Strengthening TTA’s Value

“There are so many ways for industry members to earn CEUs and education,” she said. “We have to figure out why some choose TTA over others. Having a great show is key—if we make an impact, they’ll remember it when they plan their budgets and advocate to come back.”

"Keeping members engaged strengthens vendor support and attendance," she said. "None of this would be possible without the support of our sponsors and industry partners."

Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond

“If we can continue growing education tracks and presenting golf, sports, commercial law and landscape topics in new ways, we’ll keep strengthening the association,” she said.

TTA relies on advisors from Texas A&M, Texas Tech and statewide turf programs to help members navigate environmental and regulatory challenges. “We also survey members to understand their biggest concerns and our board of advisors determines speakers and content based on realworld issues they face.”

In 2025, Flowers will also represent the TTA as a vendor at other industry shows to network and expand the association’s reach.

Women in Turf

While turfgrass has traditionally been a maleheavy industry, Flowers encourages other women to get involved and find a position where they can make an impact.

“There are so many wonderful professionals in this industry. You’ll make lifelong friends and connect with people you never would have met otherwise. A woman’s perspective is different and this industry needs diverse voices and ideas. These guys will listen and they listen with open arms.”

She added that turfgrass is everywhere from sports fields, golf courses, neighborhoods and cities, yet many people don’t realize how much work goes into it. “When you’re part of it, you see that you’re contributing to something much bigger.”

Flowers also believes increasing diversity within the TTA strengthens the industry. “We learn so much from new board members or first-time attendees. Getting different people in the room means we’re all educating each other.”

A Family Perspective

Flowers' work with TTA has given her children, ages 16, 15 and 9, a glimpse into the industry. "Now, I want my older kids to start coming to shows to learn the value of networking. Shaking hands,

looking people in the eye—that’s a skill that will help them in whatever career they choose."

Reflecting on her time with the TTA, she credits her husband of 18 years again for leading her into the industry and sees her role as a way to give back.

“He got me into this and I see how much work turfgrass professionals do,” she said. “I don’t think most people realize it. If I can help promote that, I’ve done my job. I was blessed to get this position.

JON O' SHAPLAND

August 23, 2024

Jon O'Byrne Shapland, 77, died peacefully at Baycare Alliant Hospital in Dunedin, FL on August 23rd, 2024 with his family in attendance sharing wonderful stories about his life as a husband, father and beloved grandfather.

Jon was born in Chicago in 1947 on his father's 25th birthday. He spent the greater part of his formative years in Champaign, Illinois. He graduated from Champaign High School where he was a three time letterman in track, and as a very undersized starting center on the football team. Jon graduated from the University of Illinois i n 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. His career with Wadsworth Golf Construction spanned more than 45 years. When he retired in 2010, he had been President of the company's southeast division for more than 40 of those years. He was instrumental in building the company's reputation as both the best and largest golf construction company in the world.

In the midst of this very busy and travel intensive career, Jon found what may have been

his true calling - a youth softball and baseball coach. He not only coached his children and grandchildren, but also coached hundreds of other children even in the years his own family did not participate in Little League. When Jon was not coaching, he was helping administer to the Little League as it's Treasurer. His active participation in youth sports started in 1982 as a coach at Dunedin Little League, and spanned more than 30 years culminating with his grandchildren at Clearwater Little League.

In addition to coaching, Jon was an avid golfer and tennis player with a keen sense of humor that was sometimes pointed, and oftentimes selfdeprecating.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Nell and Bob Shapland, and his younger sister Sheri Shapland. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Marsha Shapland, his son Gary Shapland and partner Ines Cuevas, his daughter Allison Shapland Coletti, his daughter Melanie Shapland Fernandez and husband John Fernandez, his son

JASON SCOTT MCCOY

GCBAA has lost a longtime member with the passing of Jason McCoy, a dedicated GCBAA Member of 30 years and a key figure at Greg Norman Golf Course Design. His impact on golf course construction and design, shaped by his work with Pete Dye, leaves a lasting legacy on over 100 courses worldwide. His passion and contributions to the industry will not be forgotten.

Jason Scott McCoy, 62, a devoted son, husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on February 27, 1963, in Huntington, West Virginia, Jason lived a life filled with love, laughter, travel, and adventure.

Jason met his beautiful bride Claire on Kiawah Island, South Carolina in 1989. Their love story led to marriage in 1990, right there on the Island. As a dedicated and loving father, Jason took immense joy in raising his two children, Austin and Ashlyn, instilling all the values in them which he held most dear. Such as his passion for hard work, dedication to family and friends, and most importantly his

February 27, 1963 - April 1, 2025 (62)

faith in God. As a family, they shared countless memories while hunting, boating, golfing, and skiing together.

Jason started his career working for Pete Dye helping build legendary golf courses. While creating the Medalist Golf Course in Hobe Sound, FL, Jason was introduced to Greg Norman. For the past 33 years, Jason worked alongside Greg at Greg Norman Golf Course Design, contributing to the creation of over 120 golf courses worldwide. His vision and craftsmanship will continue to shape the game for generations to come.

Knowing Jason meant having a lifelong friend. He embraced everyone in his life like family. He was genuine, caring, and always made others feel welcome. Each year, Jason hosted a pig roast at their home in Hampton, South Carolina inviting friends and family to hunt, eat, and enjoy each other's company. Spending time with Jason was filled with delicious food prepared on many different grills and smokers, plenty of alcohol, and laughter that often lasted into the early hours of the morning.

Jason is preceded in death by his mother, Barbara McCoy. He is survived by his loving wife, Claire Elaine McCoy; his father, James Wetzel McCoy; his beloved children, Austin (Myah) McCoy and Ashlyn (Ryan) McCoy Johnson; his sister, Jamie O’Connor; and nieces Kristin, Jaclyn, and Jordan O’Connor.

There will be two celebrations of life to honor Jason. The first will be held at the McCoy’s home in Hampton, South Carolina, on May 3rd from 1:00PM to 4:00PM. The second will take place in Hobe Sound, FL, at Harry & The Natives on May 17th from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. All are welcome to attend either or both.

In lieu of flowers and planting trees, the family requests donations be made to Brunson Church. Funds will be held with the Church until The Jason S. McCoy Foundation, a 501(c)(3), is established to honor Jason’s legacy and passion for helping those in need. Contributions may be mailed to: Brunson Church, Post Office Box 473, Brunson, South Carolina 29911.
