GCSAA CONFERENCE & TRADE SHOW

RISE TO SHINE: A RECAP OF THE PHOENIX 2024 GCSAA CONFERENCE & TRADE SHOW AND GCBAA WINTER MEETING

The 2024 GCSAA Conference & Trade Show and the GCBAA Winter Meeting held in Phoenix, Arizona set the stage for an unforgettable gathering that left attendees buzzing with excitement. From the radiant weather to unparalleled networking opportunities, this event was a testament to the vitality of the golf industry and its commitment to sustainability and excellence.

One of the highlights of the conference was Golf's Sustainability Showcase, which dazzled attendees with innovative solutions and products from industry leaders. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the GCBAA Staff, alongside esteemed professionals like Gary Brawley, ASGCA, Jeff Brauer, ASGCA, Course Crafters, and the Heritage Links Scottsdale team, the showcase shone brightly, showcasing cutting-edge advancements in sustainability.

Following the showcase, the GCBAA transitioned seamlessly into their Board of Directors Meeting and Board Dinner at Carcara Restaurant, held at the Sheraton Downtown Phoenix. The next day, the GCBAA Board of Governors convened for their annual meeting, focusing on certification review and strategic planning.

During the General Membership meeting, attendees were updated on the association's

progress and the pivotal role of diversity in sustaining growth and innovation within the industry. A teaser video of “Why GCBAA”, crafted by EPIC Creative and fellow GCBAA members, provided a glimpse into the association's renewed focus, setting the stage for future endeavors and sharing our story.

The festivities continued with the GCBAA Opening Reception, a vibrant gathering that welcomed nearly 500 guests. It was an evening filled with familiar faces and new connections, as attendees celebrated the spirit of camaraderie that defines the golf community.

We want to be sure to give special recognition to our Nebraska friends, Dennis and Nancy Seelhoff, for their invaluable contributions to the event's success. Their dedication and hard work ensured smooth operations, allowing GCBAA Staff to focus on delivering an exceptional experience for all attendees.

The trade show, featuring nearly 90 member exhibitors and 470 exhibits from across the golf industry, was a hub of activity. Presenting partners, including GCSAA, GCBAA, USGA, and ASGCA, took center stage to kick off the event on Canyon on Third, setting the tone for an engaging and productive

Ihope this message finds you well as we approach another exciting phase in the life of our association. As your President, it is both an honor and a responsibility to help steer the ship in the right direction. Today, I want to talk to you about an aspect crucial to the success of our association—the Board of Directors and how we all have a part to play and how we can help each other.

The board plays a pivotal role in the functioning of our organization. It shapes policies, sets the strategic direction, works closely with the Board of Governors as well as the GCBAA Foundation, and works tirelessly to ensure the GCBAA remains a thriving community of golf course builders, affiliates, and partners. The board is an important aspect of running this association. Our board members enjoy what we do and have fun while doing it. Each year the time comes for us to seek new faces and fresh perspectives to join the board. Our hope is to get a diversified group individuals from a complete cross-section of our membership who are not just interested but committed to elevating our association to new heights. As the next election nears, please consider running for a board seat yourself or nominating someone that you think would thrive in that position. It helps if the person you are nominating confirms they will accept the board position if elected. The more varied our candidate list is the better off the association will be.

Along with wanting members to nominate candidates we have to also encourage members to want to run and be on the board. If you want to be on the board don’t wait for someone to nominate you, ask someone to do it for you. Being on the board is an opportunity to actively contribute to the growth and development of our shared passion for golf course construction. We seek quality candidates who understand the importance of collaboration and inclusivity. Your voice is important to the health and vitality of our GCBAA.

You should know that I consider this golf industry heavily reliant on the relationships we have with one another. Partnerships within our association are also crucial. Whether you're a vendor supplying products or a builder seeking expertise, leveraging the talents and resources within our community strengthens us all. This though is not more evident than our success at Interlachen CC, where collaboration between vendors and multiple builder companies each playing their own respective role elevated the project. The success of collaborative efforts is the wave of the future. These are the alliances we should want to foster and showcase the power and potential of the GCBAA. This was a project where not only the architect, but also the golf course superintendent and his team were a crucial part to the overall success and intricacies that went into this restoration. There were a large number of GCBAA members of all categories on that project.

That is why we chose it as a template to produce a “Why GCBAA” video. It is a grand showcase of how well GCBAA members come together to service the golf industry. Stay tuned for more information on the video.

By the time you read this we will have had another successful South Florida Regional meeting. These continue to grow and be very productive events. Dubbed the GCBAA Christmas Party, it is a fun and informative event. We have great turn out from GCBAA members, ASGCA members, local GCSAA members and others. If you have not attended one of these events you should add this to you schedule and attend. These meetings are perfectly set up for panel discussions. This year we had a builder panel and an architect panel. The Q&A and back and forth on these is both entertaining and enlightening. The 2024 South Florida Regional will be relocating to a new spot. The recently opened Sunseeker Resort in Charlotte Harbor, FL. on the gulf coast. Help us break in a new meeting location.

The GCSAA Conference & Trade Show and GCBAA Winter Meeting in Phoenix was a success! We had a packed house for the Opening Reception, and it was great to network and collaborate with so many familiar and new faces. There was immense excitement leading up to this new destination, evident from how quickly the hotels sold out. That kind of interest shows growth and commitment to events like these. Your cooperation in your planning of events ensures that our energies are focused on driving the GCBAA forward. See the GCBAA calendar at the back of this newsletter and mark your calendars. Our association is built on the relationships of our members. These events are the best way to strengthen existing relationships and start new relationships. The golf construction market is booming, and we are all enjoying successes related to that. Even though we are busy consider carving out some time to come to as many of our events as possible or send another member of your team.

In closing, let's renew our commitment to the GCBAA. Running for the board, actively participating in events, and embracing collaboration are steps that each of us can take to contribute to the success of our association. We will get out of our association what we put into it. If you have any questions or want to see where you can help don’t hesitate to check with staff and they will be happy to direct your efforts to the right task. There is always room for one more at the table.

Thank you for your continued dedication and support.

Sincerely,

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR NOTES

GCBAA REPORT: BALANCING TRADITION AND INNOVATION

This Executive Director report is likely to be a roller coaster with thoughts and ideas, so be prepared. Lately, I have been thinking a lot about the difference between "making a list" vs. "checking the box". Each Fall, as we prepare for the upcoming year, we create a list of successes from the previous year along with a list of goals that we share with our membership during the renewal. We intentionally collect the prior year's successes before comparing it to the previous year. It is always our goal to have new ideas and programs at the event, not a shopping list of association activities that are repeated from the prior years.

The renewal notice is always coupled with the excitement of the upcoming winter gathering at the GCSAA Conference and Trade Show. Each show brings new opportunities and excitement, knowing we will be gathering together with many of our colleagues and friends. It is hands down our largest event as far as planning and preparation for the office. We appreciate the chance to make the gathering memorable for attendees, whether adjustments to the Opening Reception, our presence as a partner on the trade show floor, education, and even the "build" project that is now dubbed Golf's Sustainability Showcase.

Whether you were hesitant or optimistic preparing for the return to Phoenix, we can all agree the show was a tremendous success! Behind the scenes, the planning of each of these shows and the collaboration among the show partners begins years before the event. Phoenix included additional planning simply to cover the logistics of heading to a new city. GCBAA utilizes several volunteer committees to assist staff and the Board of Directors in making decisions on these events. The number of traditions tied with the show makes planning routine; however, there are always opportunities to bring new ideas to the week.

This is where "checking the box" can become an issue. For many, one of our traditions was missing in Phoenix: the Don A. Rossi Award. This tradition dates back to 1991 and for those of you who might be unfamiliar, the award was given annually by the GCBAA in memory of the late Don Rossi, former executive director of the National Golf Foundation and executive director of the GCBAA. The award is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the game of golf and its growth and who have inspired others by their example.

Each year the GCBAA solicits nominations for the Don A. Rossi Award and uses a distinguished group of GCBAA Members and allied guests to narrow down the candidates. Comparing past recipients that include Alice O'Neal Dye, Arnold Palmer, Brent Wadsworth, Dr. Michael Hurdzan, William Kubly, and Jim Kirchdorfer, Sr., the recipients have all uniquely epitomized the award with their selfless contributions to the game of golf. While there remain many individuals deserving of the award, the challenge the GCBAA is faced with is finding the opportunity to host an awards presentation that provides the right environment for the award recipient, their family, and friends, as well as those who are in the

audience to support them.

For 19 years, from 1991 through 2010, this award was given at the Golf Industry Show; the GCBAA would host a dinner the evening before the last day of the show; traditionally on Friday night. The timing allowed for an intimate dinner that included other industry award presentations as well as the Don Rossi Award and drawing for that year's GCBAA Foundation winner.

WHETHER YOU WERE HESITANT OR OPTIMISTIC PREPARING FOR THE RETURN TO PHOENIX, WE CAN ALL AGREE THE SHOW WAS A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS!

When the show timing was adjusted to a twoday trade show, the GCBAA held the 2010 award in conjunction with the summer meeting. The next year, the association hosted the award with the winter meeting and attempted to revise the dinner presentation. Throughout the next few years, the award was coupled with the GCBAA Opening Reception held the Tuesday evening before the trade show opening. While the attendee levels doubled the dinner, the reality of the award and the event were two different experiences for the majority of attendees. Simply put, many of the guests at the reception were not necessarily there to support the recipient. This created a tremendous challenge with the efforts of quieting a room with 500 attendees and holding their attention to give a proper award presentation.

The pandemic and subsequent challenges of shows that required PPE and social distancing created the perfect storm in challenging the Opening Reception and the opportunity to host the award presentation. Phoenix was no different. The GCBAA Board of Directors held lengthy conversations and discussed numerous scenarios on how to find the right venue for the award.

Needless to say, the Don A. Rossi Award is one of the traditions of the GCBAA and will continue; however, the award will be given to the right individual at the right venue. GCBAA Members can help us continue this tradition. Watch this spring for the nomination flier and in addition to submitting name(s), provide a rationale on why this person should be considered. As a reminder, the award is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the game of golf and its growth and who have inspired others by their example. Why not submit a name that is an

Justin Apel

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

individual who has made a significant contribution to the game of golf and its growth and who has inspired YOU by their example

If you paid close attention, you probably noticed a few other missing checkboxes in recent months. The GCSAA Conference and Trade Show provided a unique opportunity to build an interactive learning space with collaboration from the GCSAA, USGA, GCBAA, and numerous vendors and suppliers. We had the opportunity to construct two tee boxes and a split USGA Green with additional golf features showcasing sustainability in golf. The ability to build this feature outside of the convention center amongst other show activities was an incredible collaboration with the city, convention center, and all interested parties.

If I attempt to thank everyone, I will certainly miss a few; but some stand-outs must be named for their willingness to spend extra time and resources to make this project happen. GCBAA Board Member and Certified Builder Chris Hill once again hides away from the spotlights and microphones but is the first person to roll up his sleeves for the hard work and craftsmanship needed to shape these features. Local support from GCBAA/ASGCA Member Gary Brawley along with Certified Builder Heritage Links, Tom Bush, Miguel, Ivan and Leo. This team worked countless hours the week of the show to make sure the vision was completed, and more importantly, the vision was then cleaned up to the approval of the facilities. Additionally, Mychelle Thompson, Dennis and Nancy Seelhoff, and Trevor Wustrack.

We are always encouraged to hit the newsletter deadline with more to write; it tells us that we have a lot going on as staff supporting the GCBAA. Watch for exciting news on the launch of a GCBAA Foundation Internship Program as well as plans underway for events throughout 2024 for GCBAA and our allies. Remember to check out our website and social media pages for upcoming events, send us projects that you are working on that we can share, and let us know what we can do to help you and your company.

GCBAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS UPDATE: A Note of Gratitude and Transition

As we transition into the new year, it is with a blend of gratitude and anticipation that we announce several updates from our recent 2024 Election and GCBAA Winter Meeting.

First and foremost, we extend our deepest appreciation to Jason Sloan, Frontier Golf, for his unwavering dedication and invaluable service throughout his tenure on the Board of Directors. Jason's commitment has left an indelible mark on our organization, and we extend our heartfelt thanks for his contributions. We are pleased that Jason will remain in the membership and appreciate his dedication to serving our association in other capacities.

With Jason's departure, we warmly welcome Jim Sparks, Southeastern Golf, to the Board. Jim brings a wealth of experience and insights that will undoubtedly enrich our collective efforts as we navigate the path forward.

Furthermore, we are pleased to announce the

re-election of Chris Hill, Course Crafters; Matthew Lohmann, Wadsworth Golf Construction Company; Rick Shriver, reelected while with HARCO Fittings; and Robert Fleetwood, Fleetwood Services. Their continued presence on the Board ensures continuity and stability as we embark on new endeavors and face fresh challenges.

However, with the start of the new year, we also witnessed a transition within our ranks. Rick Shriver, while maintaining his commitment to our cause, has embarked on a new chapter at Ewing Outdoor Supply. We extend our best wishes to Rick in his new role and express our gratitude for his continued service to our organization.

In light of Rick's transition, Manny Pina, Ewing Outdoor Supply, has chosen to step down from the Board of Directors. Manny's dedication and contributions over the years have been invaluable, and we extend our sincerest thanks for his unwavering support.

As per our GCBAA Bylaws, we are unable to

have two voting members from the same member company on the Board of Directors. Thus, Manny’s departure and again, it is with deep appreciation for his years of service, and we are grateful that Manny will remain a member of the GCBAA.

In Manny's place, we are pleased to welcome Glen Olson, Ohio CAT, to the Board of Directors. Glen's enthusiasm and expertise position him as a valuable addition to our leadership team, and we look forward to the insights he will bring to our discussions and decisions.

As we embark on this new chapter, let us collectively express our gratitude to those who have served and extend a warm welcome to those who join our leadership. Together, we will continue to uphold the principles and vision that define our organization, ensuring a bright and prosperous future for all. Buy From Within IS A WIN-WIN

Life is all about connections.” You’ve likely heard that saying a time or two in the past. Fortunately, the staff at GCBAA lives that mantra each and every day. Ask Justin or Mychelle to recite the GCBAA Mission Statement, and they'd likely do so without missing a beat. The part of it that sticks with me is the ending: “…while serving the interests of its member companies.”

As listed on the GCBAA website, one of the key objectives of the organization is, “To encourage and maintain a spirit of harmony and cooperation among its members." So, it came as no surprise when, in April 2023, Justin introduced Doug Meador, the owner of Turf Materials, to Lundmark. Doug was on the brink of significant developments for his business (more on that later) and was interested in becoming more involved with the GCBAA. He also knew he needed help.

He was considering a rebrand, his website needed a refresh, and he planned on exhibiting for the first time at the upcoming GCSAA Conference and Tradeshow. Doug

began searching for a marketing agency that understood the golf industry to support his vision. Always encouraging GCBAA members to “Buy from Within,” Justin connected Doug with Lundmark, and—as they say—the rest is history.

With more than 75 years of elevating brands, Lundmark is a full-service advertising agency based in Kansas City, with extensive experience working within the golf industry across a variety of media formats and project types. A passion for the game has led to collaborations with key golf associations such as GCBAA, GCSAA, and The First Tee, in addition to partnerships with various industry companies.

Turf Materials is the leading supplier of high-quality sands and aggregates for the golf course and sports field industries. The product lineup includes a diverse range of sands for topdressing, greens mix, and tee and fairway applications, in addition to the distinguished Arkansas Premier White™ and Premier Play™ bunker sand.

Turf Materials recently secured an exclusive distribution agreement for a one-of-a-kind

specialty soil amendment, COMAND®, across fourteen U.S. states. This significant partnership was announced at the 2024 GCSAA Conference and Tradeshow in February, which was also the stage for unveiling Turf Materials' new brand logo, website, and beautiful tradeshow booth. Lundmark proudly helped with all three.

Turf managers and golf course management groups were highly interested in COMAND® and the other offerings from Turf Materials at the GCSAA Conference and Tradeshow. Encouraged by the positive feedback, Turf Materials already has begun plans to exhibit at next year’s show.

The dedication of the GCBAA staff to its members is something that deserves our profound gratitude. We have seen the GCBAA grow in industry recognition and importance over the past decade, which is a testament to the board’s leadership and the staff’s tireless efforts. The “Buy from Within” program has shown clear benefits, and we strongly encourage all GCBAA members to consider partnerships with fellow members when there’s a good fit.

This past Fall GCBAA staff visited with the team from EPIC Creative to share the success story of a recent project undertaken by Interlachen Country Club, where collaboration, partnerships, and the distinctive touch of GCBAA members played a pivotal role in bringing a vision to life.

Throughout the project, Interlachen CC exemplified the essence of teamwork, with multiple builders seamlessly fulfilling their roles, the superintendent and his team recognizing the value in hiring skilled and knowledgeable partners. The architect, too, saw the intrinsic value of GCBAA builders, suppliers, and the skilled network they brought to the table.

This project was a testament to the dedication and collaborative spirit of GCBAA members who, working together, found solutions and tackled challenges to deliver nothing short of excellence. The commitment to problem-solving ultimately

GCBAA SOUTH FLORIDA REGIONAL MEETING RECAP: Networking, Collaboration, and Insightful Discussions

The GCBAA recently hosted its annual South Florida Regional Meeting, affectionately dubbed the "Christmas party," at The Breakers in West Palm Beach. The event brought together industry professionals for strategic planning, networking opportunities, and informative discussions on pressing issues facing the golf course construction and maintenance sector.

The festivities commenced with the Executive Board convening to deliberate on strategic planning matters, reviewing the financials of 2023, and outlining the budget for 2024. This set the stage for a productive and forward-thinking gathering.

Sponsored by Caterpillar, Inc., Kelly Tractor, and Ring Power, the Opening Reception provided a relaxed environment for attendees to mingle and forge new connections. Despite the breezy and cool weather, participants gathered on the beautiful Front Lawn, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for both seasoned members and firsttime attendees.

The following day began with a light breakfast sponsored by The Toro Company, followed by welcoming remarks from GCBAA Executive

Director Justin Apel and President John McDonald II. Attendees were given the opportunity to introduce themselves, fostering camaraderie and facilitating networking among peers.

The educational sessions were a highlight of the event, featuring insights from industry experts on crucial topics. Jay Morgan of EcoBunker USA enlightened the audience on Erosion Control & Asset Protection, while Jeff Carpenter of Enviro Waste Services Group delved into Noninvasive Options to Handle Stormwater Flow.

A dynamic Builder Panel, moderated by John McDonald II, addressed pertinent issues such as labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, and housing concerns. Panelists Greg Hufner, Total Turf Services, Jeff Brewster, Total Golf Construction and Ashley Wilkinson, GTA Irrigation, provided valuable perspectives from their respective companies and experiences, stimulating engaging discussions.

We appreciate Florida GCSA Board Member Nate Watkin and Executive Director Jennifer Bryan for sharing their insights, along with the National Alliance for Accessible Golf Board Member Jan Bel Jan for discussing the strategic goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion for the future of the game.

The meeting concluded with an enlightening ASGCA Architects Panel, moderated by Jeff Brauer, featuring esteemed panelists Jan Bel Jan, Kipp Schulties, David Ferris and John Sanford, who exchanged ideas and solutions to common challenges faced by architects and builders alike.

The event ended with a luncheon sponsored by Florida Coast Equipment/Big Orange Rental, providing a final opportunity for networking and reflection on the valuable insights gained throughout the meeting.

The GCBAA extends its gratitude to all attendees and looks forward to welcoming them to the newly opened Sunseeker Resort in Charlotte Harbor, Florida, for next year's gathering on December 17-18, 2024. Mark your calendars for another enriching experience in the world of golf course construction and maintenance.

Gary Sullivan of Sullivan Electric & Pump Inc. shared invaluable insights on Pre-Construction Preparations, offering practical advice for optimizing construction projects. Additionally, updates and initiatives from organizations like the Florida GCSA Chapter and the National Alliance for Accessible Golf underscored the industry's commitment to sustainability and inclusivity.

NEXT BIG Thing

The next big thing has arrived! Golf course builders are already busy with enthusiastic new high-net-worth clients building new courses in some interesting locales…and that is a part of the next big thing.

Many golf course builders are busily working on renovations and rebuilds of existing courses – especially in the private club sector…and that is a part of the next big thing.

Some builders have been engaged to build small alternative-format courses in public parks and in out-parcels of master planned residential communities…and that is a part of the next big thing.

Looking to the National Golf Foundation (NGF), which is an invaluable resource for golf course builders and all who interact with golfrelated businesses, 2023 has seen a slight uptick in new courses with Florida and Texas leading the way. Interestingly, NGF singles out The Swing, which is an innovative 10-hole par3 course that is a part of the Omni PGA Frisco Resort in Frisco TX.

The next big thing for GCBAA members is increasing interest in non-traditional golf venues. Such alternative format golf courses –be they 3-hole, 5-hole, or 10-hole – golf course builders will benefit from growth in facilities that are not the standard 18-hole, 7,000-yard+ championship golf courses. Developers of residential communities and destination resorts now see golf – with its newfound popularity as a solution for the small spaces within their site plans.

To what issues must golf course builders adapt with the new formats and hard-toestimate jobs?

1. Estimating, pricing, and bidding newly emerging golf designs will require new or changed metrics on which builders can competitively price their work.

2. Construction processes will open the door to new solutions and, perhaps, different equipment options to execute within small spaces. These space limitations – especially on projects that have been largely built out – will require more handwork than normal during a time of expensive and hard-tosecure laborers.

3. Conceptualizing and building drainage solutions into what may have previously been a retention basin or out-parcels will become a need from golf course builders.

4. Addressing cost-effective irrigation solutions in addition to input regarding turf options that can be sustainable in the new formats will challenge GCBAA members.

5. Using artificial turf options. Some locales – and the developers / investors working in them – may prefer artificial turf options with which many golf course builders are unfamiliar.

If the next big thing truly is alternative formats, sizes, and shapes, how will golf course builders reckon with the handful of a witches’ brew described above? Those who are - or will be - trailblazing into this new category of golf course development and construction must consider:

1. Increased time for face-to-face or virtual meetings with clients and design professionals to clearly understand site conditions, limitations, and possibilities.

2. More boots-on-the-ground within the project budget, which will necessitate more on-site estimating to adequately understand what will not be evident remotely when

estimating from preliminary design plans.

3. Uncertain schedule parameters during the early stages of these projects - until builders find their stride and can reference enough project experience to find the similarities and differences from past construction experiences – will add to uncertainly and lack of precision in estimating new projects.

4. Increased retainers to address uncertainties on the parts of builders as well as their clients. This impact on project budgets is substantial to the extent that it cannot be dismissed.

The next big thing will bring new demands and level of uncertainty for golf course builders… so what else is new. Certainly, experienced builders, who are nimble enough to embrace the new opportunities and possibilities that will emerge, will see growth from this different category, which is likely to expand as more investors and developers see and embrace new concepts and the engagement they introduce to resorts and communities.

John Maynard Keynes, the 20th century economist who influenced economic thinking the world over, “The difficulty lies, not in the new ideas, but in escaping the old ones.” Embracing the next new thing and the new ideas it brings will benefit golf course builders.

E-Verify: NAVIGATING THE EMPLOYMENT VERIFICATION LANDSCAPE

In an era of heightened scrutiny and strict enforcement of employment verification requirements, companies across the country are facing increased pressure to ensure compliance. As states and the federal government signal a crackdown on hiring practices, many businesses are turning to E-Verify as a solution to avoid liability and maintain a legal workforce. But what exactly is E-Verify, and how can it impact your construction company?

Understanding the Basics: I-9 and E-Verify

The Form I-9 is a mandatory document used to verify the identity and employment eligibility of every employee hired in the United States, regardless of their immigration status. Employers must complete this form within three days of an employee's start date. It is crucial to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the information provided, as any errors or omissions can lead to potential penalties in the event of an audit.

E-Verify takes the employment verification process a step further by electronically comparing the information provided on the Form I-9 with records from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Social Security Administration (SSA). This web-based system allows enrolled employers to confirm the employment eligibility of their newly hired employees. While the Form I-9 is mandatory for all employers, E-Verify is voluntary for most businesses, with some exceptions in certain states and industries. Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah require all employers to use E-Verify (and many more require E-Verify in other circumstances). All federal construction projects require the use of E-Verify. Still, the increasing push for stricter enforcement may lead to more widespread adoption of the program.

Weighing the Pros and Cons

Implementing E-Verify can offer employers several benefits. By verifying employment eligibility, businesses can minimize the risk of hiring unauthorized workers and protect themselves from potential fines, legal consequences, and reputational damage. E-Verify can also help level the playing field by ensuring that all companies are following the

same hiring practices, reducing unfair competition from businesses that may employ undocumented workers.

Additionally, using E-Verify can demonstrate a company's commitment to compliance and good faith efforts to maintain a legal workforce. This can be particularly beneficial when bidding on government contracts or working on projects that require an elevated level of security clearance. In states like Arizona, Mississippi, and Alabama, enrolling in E-Verify can even provide a safe harbor from certain penalties if an employer unknowingly hires an unauthorized worker.

But there are also potential drawbacks to consider. E-Verify relies on government databases that may contain errors or outdated information, leading to mismatches and delays in the hiring process. E-Verify mismatches can result in flagging legal workers inadvertently, requiring more time and resources to resolve the issue. Some critics also argue that the system could be used to discriminate against certain groups of workers, particularly those with foreign names or nationalities.

Furthermore, implementing E-Verify requires an investment of time and resources. Employers must dedicate staff time to manage the verification process, provide training, and keep up to date with any changes to the program. Smaller companies with limited resources may find this additional burden challenging.

Another potential E-Verify downside is that companies may unintentionally expose themselves to heightened scrutiny from government agencies, which could result in audits. The E-Verify’s Monitoring and Compliance unit regularly reviews data to verify certain metrics are met. If there are issues, the system could automatically flag an employer for audit. There are also no guidelines that expressly decrease penalties assessed because of an audit specifically because the employer used E Verify.

The Future: E-Verify NextGen

Recently, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”) announced the launch of E-Verify+, a ‘new and improved’ version of the employment verification system. The updated platform will launch in the Spring of 2024 and aims to streamline the process by integrating the Form I-9

and E-Verify into a single, seamless experience. With E-Verify+, the new hires—instead of the employers— can electronically enter their information and employment eligibility documentation using their own secure personal accounts. This shift may reduce the risk of data entry errors and increase efficiency, as the information will be coming directly from the employee rather than a transcribing employer.

E-Verify+ also introduces new features designed to simplify the employment verification process. One notable addition is the ability for employees to carry their verification status with them when changing jobs. This could simplify the onboarding process for companies, as they would no longer need to complete a new verification for employees who have already been confirmed through the system.

Making an Informed Decision

While E-Verify can be a valuable tool for companies seeking to ensure compliance and avoid liability, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Before enrolling in the program, businesses should carefully evaluate their specific needs, considering factors such as company size, industry requirements, workforce composition, and administrative capabilities.

Consulting legal professionals experienced in employment verification can help companies navigate the complexities of the system and make informed decisions. These experts can explain the potential risks and benefits of using E-Verify, as well as assist in developing policies and procedures to ensure compliance and minimize disruptions to the hiring process.

By staying informed and proactive, companies can build a strong foundation for success while maintaining a legal and reliable workforce. Tracking developments like E-Verify+ and understanding the evolving landscape of employment verification requirements will be essential for businesses looking to thrive in an increasingly regulated industry.

As the focus on employment verification intensifies, companies that prioritize compliance and adopt forward-thinking strategies will be best positioned to weather the challenges and seize opportunities in the years ahead.

OSHA’s Stance on Distracted Driving

Provided by: GTA Insurance Group

The top priority of OSHA is keeping workers safe. While workplace fatalities have been decreasing in recent years, motor vehicle crashes continue to be one of the leading causes of death among American workers. As distracted driving dramatically increases the risk of vehicle accidents, OSHA and the Department of Transportation (DOT) are working together to combat distracted driving for the safety of workers across the country.

OSHA’s Distracted Driving Initiative

According to OSHA, employers should prohibit any work policy or practice that requires or encourages workers to text while driving, as it greatly increases the risk of being injured or killed in a motor vehicle crash.

While texting is not specifically addressed as an OSHA standard, the general duty clause in The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act) covers distracted driving by stating, “employers must provide a workplace free of serious recognized hazards.” It is well-recognized that texting while driving dramatically increases the risk of a motor vehicle injuries or fatalities, and a number of state laws prohibit texting while driving. This means you could be in violation of the OSH Act if your company does the following:

• Requires employees to text while driving

• Organizes work so that texting is a practical necessity, even if it’s not a formal requirement

• Provides any sort of financial or other incentives that encourage workers to text while driving

If OSHA receives a credible complaint that an employer enforces or encourages any of these activities, they will investigate and, where necessary, issue citations and penalties to end such practices.

Supporting Safety in Your Workplace

Since distracted driving falls under the general duty clause and not a specific standard, there are no direct guidelines for how you must protect employees from the dangers of distracted driving. It is up to you as the employer to institute your own measures to keep employees safe. The easiest way to do this is to develop a policy that outlines how employees are to use mobile devices while carrying out their duties. Specifically noting that texting while driving is not allowed not only protects employees, but also will keep your company from violating OSHA regulations. UNEARTHING THE FULL POTENTIAL OF THE Golden Gate Park Golf Course

The Golden Gate Park Golf Course in San Francisco, California, always had the bones of a special golf experience. This municipal 9-hole par-3 course is located in one of America’s great urban parks, just a couple of blocks from the Pacific Ocean, on native sand dunes that feel more like Scotland than California. It was always lively and packed with golfers, but you couldn’t help feeling that the course could be so much more.

First Tee–San Francisco, which operates the facility, recognized the challenges facing the course and committed to investing in a major renovation of the property when they renewed their lease with the city in 2023. Golf course architect Jay Blasi was asked to help bring out the course’s full potential.

Blasi explained the key elements of his plan: “The most important things we wanted to accomplish were widening the playing corridors, creating more variety and interest with new greens and multiple teeing options on each hole, and getting the ball moving on the ground to present more shot options and improve playability for all skill levels.” He also changed the sequence of the holes to improve the flow of a round, made the greens larger with more varied contours, and caught up on some overdue tree and shrub management.

Taking advantage of the underlying sandy soil was a key part of realizing the site’s full potential. “They had actually covered the dunes with heavy

soil and organic matter when they built the course,” explained Josh Lewis, the project and construction manager from the Gradoville and Hertzing Management Group. “That caused a lot of the drainage and playability issues. We removed that heavy material so we could grow firm, healthy turf on the free-draining sandy soil below.”

Soil testing revealed that the native sand would be an outstanding growing medium for the fescues and bentgrasses Blasi and Lewis wanted to use on the site, meaning they didn’t have to import greens mix or install drainage pipe. “Just because you have sandy soil doesn’t mean that it’s always good for building greens or growing grass,” said Lewis, “but this site just happened to have very consistent, highquality sand throughout – so we stumbled on a bit of a unicorn.”

The greens are a blend of two improved bentgrass varieties and the fairways and tees are a four-way blend of fine fescues. “Using fine fescue is going to help us achieve the firm and fast conditions that this site should have,” explained Lewis. “Fine fescue also has good drought and disease tolerance in this environment, which will help with our overall sustainability goals.”

Sustainability from an environmental and financial standpoint was a guiding force behind the project. The new irrigation system is much more efficient and the overall area of irrigated turf was

reduced by introducing natural sand scrapes and meadow areas. These are valuable improvements for a course in drought-prone California.

Making sure that routine maintenance will be as simple and efficient as possible was also a priority. There are only two mowing heights, one for fairways and tees and one for the greens – there isn’t any mown rough on the golf course. Also, there is only one formal bunker in the new design to minimize costly bunker maintenance. Lewis and Blasi worked closely with the San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department to make sure they felt comfortable maintaining what was built.

Today, you can see the ocean for the first time in decades and watch shots bounce and roll over the rumpled ground. When the course reopened in February, it felt like it had finally reached its full potential. This project reconnected the course with its incredible site, and with the ancient roots of public golf played over coastal dunes. It is a great place to learn the game or play for a lifetime, a benefit to locals and visitors alike, and hopefully an inspiration for others to bring out the untapped potential of their municipal golf courses.

This article is a selection from the full version that first appeared in the December 15, 2023 issue of the USGA Green Section Record.

We are all now caught up from the recent GCSAA show, which by all accounts was the biggest attendance we’ve seen in years. And most rated the overall “vibe” as excellent. I rely on others for that, as the ASGCA booth seemed to be in a less traveled corner of the hallway……nobody puts ASGCA in the corner! We’ll have to work on that for next year.

My biggest contribution to the show was participating in the joint GCSAA, GCBAA, USGA, and ASGCA “Sustainability Showcase” project. My contributions were dwarfed by those of Justin, Mychelle, and Tom Bush, who were largely responsible for the construction of the showcase. I am sure you know how hard your leadership works, but they never fail to impress me.

The annual collaboration between these groups was very good. The process of putting it all together involves many Zoom calls, but I was worried that all of the “content” for the

constructed exhibits remained undecided until very late, giving the GCBAA team some tight scheduling to pull it all together. I wasn’t as central to those parts of the exhibit as Justin was. He repeatedly tried to “stay in his lane” with construction, but he and Mychelle are so reliable, that many things got dumped in their lap.

I guess that fits into the mantras of, “If you want something done, call the contractor,” and/ or give the task to someone who is busy.

As someone who believes in the value and importance of our organizations, it has always given me pleasure to see the growth and professionalism in the GCBAA and its members. While it started a few years before I got into the profession (1971 to 1977) it seemed to get rolling in the early 1980s and has continued to evolve into the current high level of professionalism and industry wide respect.

The industry has trusted the GCBAA to construct one of their biggest showcases, and

the association has more than come through for the benefit of all of us.

I remain focused on how contractors and architects can better work together both in the field as individual members and at the organization level. In speaking with President John McDonald, II, there will be more joint projects that help us all.

Given the current state of the golf course construction business, I think we all would love a “Groundhog Day” scenario of 2022-4 being repeated endlessly in 2024-25 and beyond. That will probably leave many of you too busy to contribute as much as you would like, but we will move forward to promote the greater good. Oh, and don’t forget to make time to play some golf, the reason we are all doing what we do.

Greg Nathan APPOINTED AS PRESIDENT AND COO OF NGF

ARTICLE PROVIDED BY GOLF INC. EDITORS

The National Golf Foundation named long-time employee Greg Nathan as its new president and chief operating officer, a move that took effect in June. Nathan, who has worked at NGF since 2007, will take on additional duties that Joe Beditz previously handled. Beditz, who has served as president and chief executive officer since 1989, will continue to fill the role of CEO.

“It was unanimously decided at our recent board meeting that Greg was ready to assume

more responsibility for the operations of the National Golf Foundation, allowing Joe to focus more on strategic initiatives for the organization,” said PING President and CEO John K. Solheim, the chairman of the NGF Board.

Beditz echoed that sentiment, saying, “He’s invested the energy to develop a deep understanding of virtually every part of the golf economy and earned a reputation as a valued advisor to both leading companies and start-ups.”

It has long been expected that Nathan would assume greater responsibilities from Beditz, who is 71. Beditz has been a leading voice in the industry since he first joined NGF in 1984 as the research director, and has groomed Nathan to take over the nonprofit think tank. Some industry observers, however, have expressed concern with Nathan, who is not as well liked as Beditz.

In its 2021 tax filing, NGF reported $4.2 million in gross receipts, up from $2.65 in 2020. Beditz earned $458,094 in salary and Nathan earned $228,647.

By comparison, The National Golf Course Owners Association reported $2,89 million in gross

receipts and paid its CEO, Jay Karen, $285,000 in compensation.

Nathan began his tenure at NGF in 2007 as vice president after spending seven years at GOLF Magazine. Before his new appointment, he was NGF’s chief business officer, most recently heading up the creation of the company’s digital marketing agency.

Edited November 28, 2023: Since publication, the NGF announced that Joe Beditz has been elected as NGF’s Executive Chairman, and Greg Nathan will assume the role of CEO in addition to his current role as president. These changes will take effect on January 1, 2024.

“Joe has the longest leadership tenure in the organization’s history and has earned the respect of the dozens of industry leaders who have over the years served beside him on the NGF board of directors,” said National Golf Foundation Chairman and PING President and CEO John K. Solheim. “We are very glad he’ll continue to work closely with the board and Greg on our strategic plans and programs at NGF.”

PGA OF AMERICA PARTNERS WITH OMAHA PRODUCTIONS TO LAUNCH

“We Love This Game”

MARKETING CAMPAIGN

The PGA of America has partnered with Omaha Productions to launch the “We Love this Game” marketing campaign, which will debut Sept. 25 during weeklong coverage of the 2023 Ryder Cup on NBC and Peacock, USA Network, Golf Channel and across digital and social media.

The campaign aims to elevate and reinforce the role of PGA of America Golf Professionals as boldly influencing the present and future of the sport and industry by delivering more enjoyable experiences to golfers everywhere, no matter where they may be on their golf journeys.

In conjunction with the marketing campaign, the PGA of America has introduced an updated, modernized logo to help better distinguish the Association’s brand in the vast golf industry. The logo, designed for digital and social media, broadcast, and print usage, showcases a more open, simplified look that builds off the Association’s heritage while bringing more attention to the “PGA of America.”

The goal is to help differentiate PGA of America Golf Professionals, partners and programs that currently drive demand for the game at more than 10,000 facilities in America and for the nearly 41 million individuals who play this game we all love.

“The PGA of America consists of more than 29,000 men and women golf professionals who are motivated by their love for the game of golf, which is the underlying concept behind the ‘We Love this Game’ campaign,” says PGA of America President John Lindert, the PGA Director of Golf at Country Club of Lansing (Michigan). “Since 1916, PGA of America Golf Professionals have been the connection point of the everyday golfer’s journey. Partnering with

Omaha Productions will only amplify what our PGA of America Golf Professionals do for the game on a daily basis.”

Phase One of the marketing campaign will consist of commercials and digital and social content produced by Omaha Productions, the media company launched by Peyton Manning. Appearances will be made by Michael Block, the PGA of America Head Golf Professional at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California, whose incredible performance at the 2023 PGA Championship captivated the world; Joanna Coe, the PGA of America Director of Instruction at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennslyvania; Dr. Alison Curdt, the PGA of America Director of Instruction at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, California; and Rich Jones, the PGA of America District Manager at Golf Galaxy in Bay Shore, New York, and the Founder of the Jones Golf Academy.

“My early lessons with a PGA of America Golf Professional started my lifelong love of golf,” says Manning, a two-time Super Bowl champion. “Playing golf with my dad, brothers and friends is one of my favorite things to do and it all started with those core lessons many years ago.”

The campaign will shine a light on how the more than 29,000 men and women of the PGA of America are the game’s most highly skilled coaches, operators of the most acclaimed facilities and golf businesses on the planet, and golf experts who love the game and are passionate about being the access point to the sport for millions of golfers of every generation and background.

“As we embraced the directive of the PGA of America Board of Directors to find a way

to celebrate and differentiate the more than 29,000 PGA of America Golf Professionals’ critical role in the golf ecosystem, we couldn’t have found a more innovative and creative partner than Omaha Productions to deliver on that opportunity,” says Jeff Price, Chief Commercial Officer of the PGA of America. “The Omaha team completely embraced the challenge to both differentiate PGA of America Golf Professionals and inspire passion among the 41 million golfers embracing our sport today. Digital and social media content activations will debut simultaneously throughout Phase One of the plan, consisting of social media ad campaigns, celebrity influencer involvement and encouraging PGA of America Golf Professionals through their own “29K STRONG” social activation to share their love of the game through Instagram, X, formerly known as Twitter, and Facebook.

Phase Two will include mass media buys with targeted consumer audiences. TV and social media content will showcase individuals who have caught “Swing Fever,” practicing golf technique at home, in line at the coffee shop and at work — fine-tuning what their PGA of America Coach instructed in their previous sessions together.

Meet Seth Hildebrand Jr.:

A PASSIONATE PROJECT MANAGER TRANSFORMING GOLF COURSES

In this edition, we're shining a spotlight on Seth Hildebrand Jr., a dynamic 28-year-old Project Manager for McDonald & Sons, Inc. hailing from Spring Grove, PA. Seth's recent projects include complete renovations at Interlachen CC in Minneapolis, MN, and Waynesbourgh CC in Paoli, PA, along with 18-hole bunker renovations at Sunnehanna CC in Johnstown, PA, and Wethersfield CC in Wethersfield, CT. But what sets Seth apart isn't just his impressive project portfolio; it's his journey, leadership style, and unwavering passion for his profession.

Seth's journey into project management began with humble roots, working on his family farm. It taught him hard work, long hours, and responsibility. He later transitioned to various roles in golf course maintenance. It was during a college internship at Inverness Club in Toledo, OH, that Seth's fascination with golf course construction ignited. Witnessing the meticulous work of McDonald & Sons, Inc. during a renovation project sparked a newfound passion in him. He has been with McDonald & Sons, Inc. for the past five years.

"I love to play in the dirt," Seth admits with a grin. "Seeing the work come to life and being part of a dedicated team. I love being around the team all the time. Team sports were a big part of my life growing up and being a Project Manager is like reliving the camaraderie of team sports."

Among Seth's notable projects, Congressional CC stands out as a testament to his resilience and leadership. Overcoming numerous hurdles, including the largest earth-moving project in Montgomery County, MD, Seth worked alongside other McDonald managers and a talented team to complete this project on time, despite the challenges. The project took over two years to complete and there were many hurdles that had to be dealt with. Working on a project of that size, at a course of that caliber, while incorporating one of the largest erosion and sediment control plans and dealing with hard to please Country Inspectors taught him so much about project management and teamwork.

"It was a job that changed the rest of my life,"

Seth reflects, highlighting the invaluable lessons learned in project management and teamwork.

Seth's leadership style revolves around fostering positivity and teamwork. He believes in acknowledging team members' contributions and maintaining open lines of communication to ensure everyone is aligned with project goals.

"Everyone's job is important," Seth emphasizes. "It's about creating an enjoyable yet competitive environment where we all strive for excellence. I always try to tell my team when they are doing well at their job. I like to have fun and joke around with the crew when the time is right. I feel that it lifts tensions in the air somedays, but I also make a point to tell the team when something needs to be done in a timely manner. Letting the team know what my goals are for that job, for that day or week is key to all of us being on the same page."

Navigating the diverse expectations of each project and logistical challenges are common hurdles Seth faces. Yet, through effective teamwork and communication, Seth and his team consistently overcome these obstacles. Seth believes that employing a good attitude during every project is a key component.

Some common challenges faced as a Project Manager are the varied expectations of each project. At McDonald & Sons, Inc. they accommodate the clubs as much as they can. Seth remarks that they try to keep golf holes open if the club finds that helpful for the membership, that is a challenge to work around active golf and golfers. Every club has a different set of needs and goals, Seth aims to meet and exceed all expectations of the Owner, Golf Course Architect and McDonald & Sons, Inc.

“Personnel is also going to be an issue. Where to place your team so that you are successful. We work on the road quite often and finding decent housing that is in our budget and doesn’t make the team drive too far to get to the site,” Seth notes. “As PMs we also work hard at keeping up on the status of each site’s equipment needs. Keeping everything running and being productive takes a teamwork approach. Especially when the projects are 1000’s of miles away from our shop.”

In an ever-evolving industry, Seth stays in touch with trends and technologies through industry events and networking. Embracing advancements like GPS surveying and laser-guided equipment, Seth emphasizes the importance of adaptability in project management.

Central to Seth's approach is maintaining transparent and active communication with clients and stakeholders. For Seth, addressing challenges and resolving issues collaboratively is key to successful project outcomes.

While Seth takes pride in all his projects, his involvement in Congressional CC remains a standout achievement. Reflecting on his growth,

Seth acknowledges the invaluable lessons learned and the evolution from an Assistant PM to a seasoned Project Manager. Under the McDonald & Sons, Inc. umbrella, they wanted Seth to learn every part of the project from labor to equipment operation, to management, to customer relations.

“In the beginning, it was nerve racking to operate equipment in front of the McDonald’s for fear I was doing it wrong,” Seth explains. “There were times I was and that is when they would teach me “The McDonald Way”. From then, you can learn and take something from every experience on every project. They set my expectations that it would take 3-5 years to become a PM and that is what the evolution looked like. Grow and learn.”

For those aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Seth stresses the importance of communication, building relationships, and continuous learning. “Try to work under someone and take the time to learn the trade. Some of the best leaders in the world have great mentors,” says Seth. “I have had a lot of mentors in my life that have helped me get to where I am today. It is good to have a certain level of humility. Admitting you do not know something should not be considered a weakness, but a strength that you want to learn and be the best you can be.”

"Be the guy people want on their job and want to work for," Seth advises. " Build relationships and friends on the way and you will achieve great things. Make yourself irreplaceable on the projects you are on and show your passion for what you do."

In closing, Seth reflects on the rewarding nature of his work despite its challenges. "It takes a special person to be in this industry," Seth muses. "But knowing that I'm doing something I love while providing for my family—it's the greatest achievement I could ask for."

The #1 Tool to Build a Better Golf Course:

TAHOMA 31 BERMUDA RATED #1 FOR LOW WATER USE, COLD TOLERANCE, QUALITY, SHADE, EARLY SPRING GREEN-UP & DURABILITY

When your reputation rests on building the best golf course possible, why not specify the best grass possible for your customer? Tahoma 31 bermudagrass grows in faster than most bermudas and is rated #1 for low water use, cold tolerance, quality, shade, early spring green-up, and durability by NTEP and other university researchers. These qualities not only aid in getting to opening day sooner, but also assists the golf course operator and superintendent maintain the golf course in excellent condition for years to come. Plus, Tahoma 31’s exceptional cold tolerance allows for this warmseason grass to be planted farther north than it had once been thought possible for a bermudagrass.

Faster Grow-in

With an aggressive growth rate, establishment of Tahoma 31 for new golf courses and renovations is faster than Latitude 36, Tifway 419, and TifTuf. Helping your customers get to that first tee time sooner means you’re providing them with a playing surface that will be ready to go earlier than if they’d used other grasses.

Low Water Use

Tahoma 31 is rated the #1 bermuda for drought resistance. It uses 20% less water than standard varieties, 18% less water than TifTuf. It takes less water at grow-in, and significantly less once established. For golf courses concerned with water

use issues, Tahoma 31 provides a sustainable solution for drought and water restrictions.

Cold Tolerance

Tahoma 31 is the most cold-tolerant bermudagrass on the market. Along with the usual warm-season regions (Southeast, Southwest, South and Transition Zone), it may be planted in regions once only open to cool-season grass. Tahoma 31 can tolerate the weather extremes and thrive on courses as far north as Colorado, and as deep into the Transition Zone as Indiana and New York.

Chris Wilczynski DESIGNED COURSE AT THE NEW ASTOR CREEK GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB NOW OPEN

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL- Kolter Homes, a Builder Magazine “Top 100 Builder” has unveiled their new signature 18hole golf course at Astor Creek Golf & Country Club, designed by Christopher Wilczynski, ASGCA, owner of C.W. Golf Architecture. The Grand Opening Celebration took place the weekend of October 21st and 22nd, and the course is now open for play.

Wilczynski was selected for the project in 2021 which marks the 4th new golf course the Michigan-based architect has designed for a resort-style development in Florida, since starting his firm in 2010.

“I’m honored that Kolter Homes entrusted me to design the golf course at their first ground-up golf community,” said Wilczynski. “Our goal was to create something unique on the Treasure Coast – a golf course that is beautiful and features fun, strategically designed risk/ reward holes that blend classic and modern design elements,” Wilczynski said.

With five sets of tees and a combo scorecard that offers a total of 8 teeing options, the par 72 course will give golfers the option to play from 6903 to 3653 yards. Many holes along the front and back nine will feature Wilczynski’s creative spin on classic design templates, with greens that vary in shape, elevation, and size. Holes are aptly named “Surprise Redan” (#2), “Astor Biarritz” (#3), “Astoria Punchbowl” (#12), and “Short Horseshoe” (#15).

One of the course’s “eye-catching” design features are the meandering waste bunkers on several holes. “The waste areas are not only aesthetically appealing, but given their composition you can play your shot out of them, or even drive a golf cart through them,” Wilczynski said. The waste bunkers feature various islands that are landscaped with a combination of native grasses, mature oaks, palms, and pines, all planted to frame and complement the design of the golf course.

Bobby Julien, CEO of Kolter Homes recently played the course for the first time and commented, “It was awesome; frankly above my expectations and totally in line with what we believe our residents will want for their golfing experience…truly an exceptional job.”

Planning and execution of the project involved an extensive team: RVI Planning & Landscape Design, GCBAA Certified Builder Ryangolf, Thomas Engineering Group, landscape architect Cotleur & Hearing, clubhouse architect David Humphrey, and irrigation consultant and GCBAA Professional Member Tony Altum. Day-today operations will be managed by Hampton Golf and TJ Kemp, the golf course superintendent.

“It’s been an amazing experience working with this fantastic team of experts,” said Wilczynski. “All great projects eventually come to an end, but when I leave the site realizing that

we just created a new utopia and experience for people to enjoy for the foreseeable future… that’s fulfilling.”

Staying the Course:

LEXICON’S HERITAGE LINKS LEAVES FOOTPRINT ON PROFESSIONAL GOLF

Renowned golf course builder Heritage Links can trace its history from an encounter in southeast Asia to a state-of-the-art new facility in east Texas.

However, the company has roots in Arkansas.

Heritage Links is a division of Little Rockbased steel fabrication and construction management firm Lexicon. It came into being when golf course builder Jon O’Donnell, now Heritage president, was working in Singapore and joined forces with the late Tom Schueck, Lexicon’s founder, in the late 1990s.

“Nearly 25 years and 500 projects later, Heritage Links has become the premier golf course builder in the U.S., highly respected by its clients, architects and peers, and it is an integral part of the interconnected Lexicon family,” said Lexicon president and CEO Patrick Schueck, Tom’s son. “In fact, Prospect Steel — another division of Lexicon — recently supplied the steel for some bridges Heritage Links needed for a course it was building near Nashville.”

With two championship golf courses built for the relocated PGA headquarters in Frisco, Texas, and Heritage-built Liberty National Golf Club hosting a key LPGA tournament in New Jersey this year, Heritage Links continues to showcase its skills within the industry.

“Everybody knows who we are, and there’s no shortage of opportunities to work for different architects and clients,” O’Donnell said.

Heritage operates with three basic divisions: golf course renovation and construction, irrigation, and sports field construction.

“The construction and irrigation divisions work well together because clients, architects and irrigation consultants like to work with one company,” O’Donnell said. “Heritage Links can do the golf construction or renovation and install the new irrigation system with maximum coordination and efficiency.”

The sports field work is a growing share of the Heritage Links portfolio, constructing pro soccer fields, football fields, event lawns and baseball fields.

“Heritage Links has been involved in all of these types of projects and continues to get requests for this type of work,” O’Donnell said.

Heritage has built or reworked some of the world’s best-known golf courses, including Chambers Bay in Washington state, Desert Mountain Renegade Course in Arizona, Liberty National Golf Course in New Jersey, Southern Hills Country Club in Oklahoma and, most recently, the Omni PGA Frisco’s Fields Ranch East Course at the new home of the PGA in Frisco.

The Fields Ranch East Course was designed for PGA tournament play and was one of the only courses to be named host to a tournament before its construction. In late May, the 7,177-yard, par-72 course was the site of the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, held before it was opened to the public.

In early June, Liberty National, designed by Bob Cupp and Tom Kite and built by Heritage Links in 2005, hosted the LPGA’s new Mizuho Americas Open, where the challenging, 6,656yard, par-72 layout sits in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty and offers a view of the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson River.

“Each project is unique, so our approach to each project is different,” O’Donnell said. “For instance, for Florida courses, we typically have the summer to complete the work so the course is ready for winter play. Summertime in

Florida can be very wet at times, so there are challenges with weather and hurricane season.

“Some parts of Texas have a lot of rock, and these rocky conditions affect not only the price but the timeline of the project and hitting the grassing window milestones.”

Growth

O’Donnell had already embarked on a career constructing golf courses before he joined forces with Tom Schueck to form the partnership that has birthed numerous courses around the world.

“Fortunately, I had the opportunity to work for Tom for a number of years,” O’Donnell said. “Tom was always looking for an opportunity for more growth, diversification in his businesses and in terms of expanding in different ways. When I came to him about it, golf was very busy. Golf was very hot in the U.S. Tiger Woods was winning every other tournament.”

As a 16-year-old, O’Donnell worked an afterschool job at a golf course while trying to figure out his post-graduation path. His boss was a Penn State graduate and O’Donnell learned the school had a highly regarded agronomics program, so he enrolled there.

Before graduating in 1987, O’Donnell landed a choice internship at Augusta National. A big Jack Nicklaus fan, O’Donnell got to see his hero win his sixth Masters in 1986, and he even made the cover of the Augusta Herald , where he was seen in a photo raking the Augusta bunkers.

“I got to see one of the best places in the world to maintain a golf course,” said O’Donnell, whose office walls are adorned with photos of his sons meeting Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player.

From Penn State, O’Donnell moved to California and maintained golf courses in the Palm Springs area. Then he became a course superintendent at Indian Wells’ Vintage Club.

“I was fairly young and full of energy. Someone approached me about building a

MOVERS
Patrick Schueck Jon O'Donnell

golf course, and that’s when I started building golf courses out in the Palm Springs area, and here I am 35 years later, building golf courses,” O’Donnell said.

With his own company, O’Donnell spent about 10 years building courses throughout Asia and was working on a course in Singapore when he encountered one of Tom Schueck’s sales representatives at Lexicon. O’Donnell described his work and the sales rep said, “Well, we want to do that.”

Discussions with Schueck led to the formation of Heritage Links and a partnership between O’Donnell and Schueck in 1999. Two years later, Heritage, which began as a limited liability company, was rolled into a division of Lexicon.

“I became an employee then,” O’Donnell said.

“Heritage Links has completed more than 500 projects and usually has around 10 working projects a year,” Patrick Schueck said.

“My dad’s hunger to expand led to what I refer to as undisciplined growth, which in typical Tom fashion, turned out to be a huge blessing.”

From the ground up

When building a course, O’Donnell said, there are predictable things like local terrain and climate to consider. O’Donnell pointed out that Chambers Bay, which Heritage built at University Place in Tacoma, was created from a former sand pit.

While terrain and weather can be accounted for in the design and construction schedule, there are also unforeseen challenges and setbacks.

O’Donnell noted an ongoing job in Puerto Rico that requires having an evacuation plan in place in case of tropical storms.

The changing technology of the game — the alloys used in clubs that drive the ball farther, for instance — also affects the design of new courses, which all seem to be seeking more distance, O’Donnell said. High tech also continues to find its way into the science of course construction.

“Not only is the game changing, but the technology to maintain golf courses is changing too,” O’Donnell said. “The game has gotten longer, so lengthening the golf course is something everyone is looking for in their renovation. Grasses have gotten better to play from, becoming more drought tolerant, so they don’t require as much water. Irrigation systems have improved, as well, so the water distribution has gotten much better and more efficient, with almost all the areas of watering

being isolated to the turf on the golf course.”

Sometimes there is a bidding process, and sometimes the building of a new course is negotiated, O’Donnell said, but at some point, the builder will submit a proposed budget.

“It’s not necessarily the lowest priced; it’s who’s got the best plan,” O’Donnell said. “We always think we’re still the best. We hate to lose.”

Eventually, the builder puts a schedule together that takes into account everything from the length of time it takes to grow grass to variances in the local weather to the availability of heavy equipment.

“With the industry being very busy right now, sometimes we’re looking at a year out when we put together the schedule,” O’Donnell said. “Sometimes we’re looking at a year and a half out.”

A renovation project can take on many forms, including adding new cart paths, moving tee boxes and adding or moving bunkers. Club and golf course owners are always looking to make improvements for their customers and members, which leads to long-lasting relationships between Heritage and some of its notable courses, like Liberty National.

“Almost 20 years ago, we broke ground on that golf course, and the owner continues to strive to make the course better,” O’Donnell said. “There are various events held at the course, and as mentioned, their newest tournament is the Mizuho Americas Open. We consider each other partners. They are always tinkering with the course, and we are always making the tinkering come true for them.

“Whether it is upgrading grasses, moving tee boxes or building the short game, we are always there for them. This is a true client/ contractor relationship in which we are both comfortable to work together for many years, even after the course has been opened for play.”

East to west and back again

Heritage can’t take credit for the PGA’s relocation from Florida to Texas; that was already in the works, but when tasked to build a showcase course, Heritage rose to the occasion.

“The PGA of America had big plans prior to their move and prior to the course being built. They came to us wanting to build something special,” O’Donnell said.

Fields Ranch features two, 18-hole championship courses designed by Gil Hanse and Beau Welling and surrounded by a resort and spa and numerous dining and shopping destinations.

The East Course was designed by the Hanse firm to be the predominant tournament

course, while the West Course was designed to facilitate early rounds of future competition as well as accommodate golfers of all ages and levels. O’Donnell said this is the design and intent of several venues on the PGA Tour.

“At PGA Frisco, they have two wonderful courses, as well as a short course, a massive putting green and a practice facility that is out of his world,” O’Donnell said. “They have the infrastructure in place with PGA of America’s facilities, along with the newly opened Omni Hotel, to host some really unique and exciting events.”

People who might think of the east central Texas topography as fairly flat will be surprised at the course’s up-and-down layout. The East Course, ranging between 5,012 yards and 7,863 yards, features rolling greens that transition to more demanding slopes.

“There was true natural elevation there to work with,” O’Donnell said.

Fields Ranch East will host 26 major events over the next 12 years.

“Heritage Links is driven by excellence in golf course construction and renovation. When tournaments are played on our courses, the world gets to see the high-caliber work that we achieve,” O’Donnell said.

Heritage Links is a certified builder with the Golf Course Builders Association of America. With its corporate office in Houston and branch offices in Lincoln, Neb., and Temecula, Calif., Heritage has the reach and profile to support its reputation as a premier golf course builder.

“It’s an incredible honor and a point of pride to build beautiful, inspiring courses that numerous people can enjoy,” Patrick Schueck said. “If you look at our list of courses that have hosted major golf tournaments, along with the television audience that has watched these tournaments, you’ll see that Arkansas-based Lexicon Inc. has touched hundreds of millions of people around the world over the years.”

Now, with the emergence of the PGA Frisco project, Heritage can deliver something for fans in Arkansas — proximity to great golf.

“Golfers like new golf courses, and they don’t mind driving several hours to play good courses,” O’Donnell said. “We are sure many golfers from Arkansas will drive to PGA Frisco to experience this incredible golf destination built by a company with deep Arkansas roots. We are incredibly proud of this work, and we hope Arkansans will be proud to see it.”

SEED INDUSTRY VETERAN Bill Dunn RETIRING FROM DLF

ALBANY, ORE. (NOVEMBER 14, 2023) –It’s bittersweet to announce Bill Dunn’s last day at DLF will be December 31, 2023. After a long and illustrious career in the green industry, he has finally decided to retire.

Bill Dunn has been instrumental in the evolution of the company in North America, starting with Seed Research of Oregon 23 years ago in the aftermath of the ABT bankruptcy. As a sales leader, he led his groups through several acquisitions while continuing to build presence in both domestic and international markets.

“I am proud that Seed Research of Oregon remains a valued brand within the DLF portfolio and

is supported by the most knowledgeable group in the industry,” Dunn said.

Dunn originally planned to retire in 2022, but he eventually agreed to stay an extra year and help lead the company’s bentgrass production in the Willamette Valley. “Building relationships is essentially a sales function, whether it’s with customers or growers. You need to figure out the best way to communicate with people, and be responsive, honest and respectful,” said Dunn.

Dunn has been a leader throughout his career, not just within DLF but the seed industry as a whole. He is a past president of the Atlantic Seed Association (2001), Oregon Seed Trade Association (2011) and Oregon Seed Council (2013). He began his career with eight years in sales at Rockland Chemical covering New York and New Jersey, before becoming sales manager for Lofts Seed. Five years later, Dunn joined ZAJAC Performance Seed, where he worked five years as national accounts manager before returning to Lofts Seed, which had been purchased by ABT, the company that sent him to Oregon.

He has also been a trusted advisor and mentor at

DLF. “I’ve enjoyed watching talented people in our company grow their careers, and be in a position to provide guidance and support when they needed it. I certainly had a lot of great mentors and people who helped me along the way.”

Knowing DLF is in good hands made the decision to retire much easier. He pointed to improved turnaround times for customers and a renewed focus on the entire supply chain as positive signs for the future. “The recent investments by DLF have been strategic, and the new leaders’ approach shows everyone is valued. I feel confident about the company going forward,” said Dunn.

There are many at DLF who have engaged in Dunn’s transition over the last year to ensure that his knowledge and expertise are transferred effectively. DLF is excited to carry on his legacy in the professional turf market under the leadership of Sean Chaney, vice president of U.S. wholesale, along with its professional turf experts across all regions of the U.S.

DLF sincerely thanks Bill Dunn for his many years of service and wishes him a happy retirement and the best of luck on the golf course.

ALBANY, ORE. (OCTOBER 26, 2023) –DLF recently held a ceremonial ribbon cutting and an appreciation barbecue for local seed growers at DLF’s new state-of-the-art seed enhancement and operations facility in Albany, Oregon.

DLF’s group CEO, Soren Halbye, and EVP of North America, Neil Douglas, were present to cut the ribbon and personally thank DLF’s seed grower partners, along with all the people who were involved in the project.

“It is our intention to continue building our business from the Willamette Valley and make

investments that keep the seed industry vibrant for years to come,” said Halbye. “This investment signifies DLF’s commitment to our grower partners and helps us deliver exceptional results for our customers.”

The new 141,000 square foot facility, which will allow DLF to consolidate its Oregon operations, features a seed enhancement line, high-speed fully automated blending line with palletizers, diverse packaging capabilities, 12 loading docks, and 65,000 square feet of storage space for finished goods and raw material.

Neil Douglas added, “DLF is a 150-year-old

business owned by 2,600 Danish seed growers. We’re proud to celebrate this milestone with our grower partners and add to the enduring legacy of DLF”.

DLF’s beginnings in North America began in the late 1980’s. At the time, DLF operated one small office in Oregon. Now the company’s footprint includes eighteen processing centers and five research stations across Canada and the United States.

“It is DLF’s goal to be the top seed supplier for forage and turf in North America, and this is an important step to support our future business growth,” added Halbye.

Hart Ranch Golf Club CONTINUES TO MAKE STRIDES TO STAY AT THE TOP OF THE LEADER BOARD

RAPID CITY, SD – The greatest entities in sports—people and places—are often categorically complimented as “the Mount Rushmore” of their respective activity. Quite apropos then that Golfweek’s current #1 Public Course in South Dakota, Hart Ranch Golf Club, is literally 20 minutes down the road from the iconic national treasure Mount Rushmore.

Nestled in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Hart Ranch Golf Course began as a 9-hole course in 1985, and remained that for a decade, expanding to 18 holes in 1995. Recognized by locals and tourists alike for its picturesque views of the hillsides blanketed with native vegetation and century old rock outcroppings, the course offers a fun, yet challenging round as golfers navigate the valley’s namesake creek that comes into play on a dozen of the golf holes. Despite earning Golfweek’s top honors, ownership in Fall of 2023 embarked on the first phase of implementing a longrange master plan prepared by John Fought, ASGCA. In addition to enhancing playability and shot making for all skill levels, installation of a new irrigation system on the front nine will afford the ability to provide high quality

turf conditions on a consistent basis. “We’re recognized as the top conditioned golf course in Rapid City,” said Adam Wortman, golf course superintendent. The state-of-the-art controls of the new system allows us to more precisely irrigate putting greens, surrounds, fairways and tees further enhancing our ability to meet customer expectations that come along with being the top public golf course in the state.” Course improvements also completed include leveling and realigning several tee boxes, new concrete cart paths, tree removal to enhance playability and turf quality, and regrassing projects completed by the golf course builder Duininck Golf.

“They have all the tools and seasoned resources to take on projects of any size and complexity, from new courses and total remodels to course improvements and irrigation projects like the work at Hart Ranch,” said John Fought. “When they work on a project, any project, they invest fully. You get the best of their minds and the best of their skills from beginning to end. Sure, the location next to Mt. Rushmore doesn’t hurt, but the course that Duininck Golf has built is what keeps everyone coming back.”

General Manager, Brett Grosz, concurs. “We initially brought Duininck Golf in a few years ago to help with tee and bunker renovations. It was after that work that the rating experts took notice, and we were recognized by Golfweek as the #1 public golf course in the state. Not to mess with success, Duininck Golf has been a great partner and we look forward to continue to finish the work identified in the John Fought Design master plan and expect to keep getting better. The best part though is that they’re not just the consummate industry professionals, they’re great people, too.”

It takes a lot to make a golf course great, and even more to become the very best, but they’ve clearly found the formula for success in western South Dakota, at Hart Ranch.

About Duininck Golf

Duininck Golf is part of the Duininck Companies established in 1926 and based in Prinsburg, MN. A member of the Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA), Duininck Golf has completed new course, renovation and irrigation installation projects throughout the United States working alongside many well-known golf course architects, many who are members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA). With offices in Minnesota, Texas and Georgia, Duininck Golf has the resources and regional expertise to provide uncompromised service and attention to detail to its clients.

The Best of Both Worlds

FORMATION OF PANGAEA FIRM BRINGS

RENNIE AND DANNER TOGETHER TO CREATE A NEW GLOBAL FORCE IN GOLF DESIGN

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA. AND GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, NOVEMBER 9, 2023 – A new Scottish-American alliance promises to shake up the global golf design industry. Named for the ancient supercontinent that included all of Earth’s landmass and a reflection of the principals’ philosophy ‘One world – better together’, Pangaea Golf Architecture is a strategic partnership between Jeffrey Danner and Stuart Rennie, who met while studying on the European Institute of Golf Course Architects’ (EIGCA’s) diploma course in 2007, and have been close friends ever since.

Danner says: “When I first met Stuart, his talent was obvious, and I could sense his ambition. We bonded over our shared aspirations. Even back then, we joked about taking over the golf world together, and now is the time for us to take a leadership role in our quickly evolving industry.” Rennie adds: “We have spent the years since our first meeting making our own ways in the golf design industry, but for both of us, we have always been interested in pooling our abilities to create great golf courses, and I think we have both reached the stage in our careers where it is time for us to pursue that interest.”

Stuart Rennie grew up near Dornoch, the home of legendary architect Donald Ross, and has been a member of the Royal Dornoch club since the age of twelve. After the EIGCA Diploma, he worked for the firm of Thomson, Perrett and Lobb in Melbourne, Australia, working closely with five-times Open champion Peter Thomson, and also in London, before forming his own firm, Rennie Design, in 2011. His highest profile project was the design of

the acclaimed new Highland Council King’s Golf Course in Inverness, which opened in 2019. Besides completing many renovation and masterplanning projects, he also served as construction project manager on the Royal & Ancient’s Golf It! development in Glasgow.

Rennie says: “Growing up and learning my golf in the Highlands, I have an obvious connection with the work of Donald Ross. For years it has been a major career goal for me to follow in his footsteps and work in North America, perhaps even working on one of his courses. Creating Pangaea Golf Architecture sets the stage to fulfill that ambition!”

Jeff Danner is one of only four golf architects to be members of both the European Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA) and the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA). His career has seen him working with firms such as Golfplan and Lohmann Golf Designs, and a significant spell with Greg Norman Golf Course Design. He founded his own firm, Danner Design, recently, but has been interested in forming a long-term partnership for some years.

Jeff was in a lead designer role for numerous projects for Greg Norman Golf Course Design, including projects in Vietnam, Japan and Saudi Arabia. More recently, Jeff oversaw the renovation of Anchorage Golf Course in preparation for 2022 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur and has been leading the transformation of Hyderabad Golf Club in India, on behalf of his previous affiliation with Richardson|Danner Golf Course Architects.

“In recent years, the golf design market has been focused on design – or at least shape –and build projects,” says Danner. “And there

are an increasing number of shaper-designers practicing in this way, but there are limitations on the sort of project you can take on using that approach. In fact, I’ve fielded several calls in the past few years from shaper-designers who are trying to pair with someone who has strong planning and design experience, in order to be competitive in the wider market. Flexibility in construction is a must, but most projects, especially in developing parts of the world, require professional planning and documentation, and a shaping background doesn’t in itself equip you to do that. Our experience means that we are very comfortable with both design and build and more traditional projects, which we believe is an excellent reason for clients to work with us.”

Stuart Rennie agrees. “My Inverness project required a balance of precise planning and the flexibility to adapt to various opportunities in the field. My professional background as a landscape architect provided me with the training to deliver high level contract construction documentation, while allowing for some improvisation which was key for Inverness. We both very much enjoy working in the field and believe that we can provide the best of both worlds where we create good quality drawings and spend valuable time on site,” he says. “Between the two of us, we have a deep understanding of the role of both art and science in golf design, and I think that will be a real source of competitive advantage for us in the years to come. With offices on both sides of the Atlantic, we are in a great position to provide round the clock services to clients in any part of the world – it is an exciting prospect for both of us.”

Discover Crossroads at Palmetto Bluff: A REVERSIBLE GOLF COURSE WITH NORTHBRIDGE® BERMUDAGRASS

Nestled in the picturesque Bluffton, South Carolina, Palmetto Bluff strategically decided in 2023 to carpet its new golf course, Crossroads, with NorthBridge® Bermudagrass.

King-Collins Golf Course Design and Sod Solutions Professionals worked hand in hand to select a grass that would hold up to the desires and needs of the new reversible ninehole course, stretching across and expansive 3,100 yards.

“What’s unique about what King-Collins did here is just the way the course is laid out and the number of options that it's going to create for us as managers, for the golfers and for the members. It's really 18 holes in a nine-hole footprint. So there are 11 greens out here –some greens are double greens, some greens are triple greens and some greens are only played in one direction,” said Crossroad’s Golf Course Superintendent Adam Deiwert. “You can literally walk in fairway from one side of the course to the other side of the course and never leave the fairways.”

The choice of NorthBridge, renowned for its resilience during droughts and cold snaps, was further validated by its endorsement from numerous prestigious facilities nationwide. NorthBridge was also selected due to its rapid

establishment and ability to be kept low and fast. With two par-threes, five par-fours and two par-fives, the course offers an invigorating golfing experience for players.

“Seeing the difference from zoysias to bermuda with NorthBridge has just been amazing. I know bermuda roots in and establishes quickly, but this seemed to take it to a whole other level on the speed that it was able to grow in,” Deiwert said.

The NorthBridge was harvested from Green Acres Turf Farm in Furman, SC and Carolina Turf in Raeford, NC. Sod Solutions Professionals oversaw the entire project and its team emphasized the project would not have been possible without partners and growers like Joe Poole and Gary Youmans. Working alongside both farms, Sod Solutions Professionals was able to secure the acreage and quality needed to successfully install the grass, which was completed by Kirkpatrick’s Turf & Landscape Management, based in Georgia.

The NorthBridge harvested from Green Acres Turf Farm grew in at a record 100 days on the farm after planting. The superior color and condition of the sod when it left the farm are impressive examples of the rapid growth and density of NorthBridge.
