Golf Industry Show Makes Return to San Antonio For just the second time, the Golf Industry Show was held in San Antonio, Texas this February – and it was the Show’s first time using the recently completed Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. While the format of the Show was similar to previous years, it was certainly a new experience and environment for Show attendees. The week kicked off with the annual Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) golf tournament and education. The trade show Opening Ceremony began Wednesday morning with the show concluding on GCBAA MEMBERS GATHER AROUND THE GREEN OF INSIDE THE Thursday night with the Closing Ceremony featuring ROPES FOR THEIR GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING AT THE Saturday Night Live celebrity, Darrell Hammond. GCBAA GOLF INDUSTRY SHOW. was heavily involved in this year’s show with their annual activities. Association staff and volunteers arrived early to start building the Inside the Ropes golf hole feature in Hall A of the Convention Center. Inside the Ropes covered 20,000 square feet and highlighted sod and other golf course features giving the area the look and feel of a finishing hole at a major golf tournament. Monday of show week the GCBAA Board held their dinner with special mentions of gratitude for the GCBAA Certification Board of Governors, the GCBAA Foundation Board of Directors and the outgoing and incoming officers of the Association. Tuesday the GCBAA Board, along with several committees, held their meetings while other GCBAA members participated in the GIS education offerings.

The Tuesday night GCBAA General Membership Meeting, sponsored by LASCO Fittings, Inc., was a unique experience for our membership. The meeting was held Inside the Ropes with everyone standing on the green. The GIS exhibit floor was laid out in such a manner that an airwall could be closed allowing final touches to be made to the trade show floor all while GCBAA members and guests were able to utilize the Inside the Ropes area for the meeting and opening reception.

Incoming and outgoing board members for both the Association Board of Directors as well as the Foundation Board of Directors were welcomed and thanked at the General Membership Meeting. The group also congratulated GCBAA Certified Builder & Irrigation Contractor, Heritage Links, on their Charter Membership. A review of the state of the association for 2017 and 2018 6 President's Perspective was given by GCBAA Executive Director, Justin Apel. Partnerships with Caterpillar Inc., Sunbelt Rentals, and Profile Products as well as the introduction of the new Wacker 7 Executive Director Notes Neuson program were discussed and finally a check was presented by the Wadsworth 8 Foundation Update Golf Charities Foundation. Before concluding the meeting, Paul Cope and Ashley 8 New Members Wilkinson introduced the Mike Roach Memorial Scholarship for turfgrass students attending the Horry Georgetown’s Technical College in Myrtle Beach. Before the meeting adjourned, 18 Developer's Guide GCBAA staff surprised Paul with the attendance of his family and a celebration of his contributions over 50 years in the golf industry. It was a truly remarkable surprise and so 24 Allied Associates fun to be a part of!

At 6:00 p.m. sharp the doors opened and the Opening Reception began. Throughout the evening, GCBAA honored 2018 Don Rossi recipient Mr. Ken Melrose. Unfortunately, Ken was not able to join the group so accepting the award on his behalf was a familiar face to the Association, Rick Lohman with The Toro Company. Rick had a chance

to catch up with Ken prior to the show and shared several sentiments from Ken about the GCBAA and its members.

Through Rick, Ken conveyed his appreciation and was humbled to have even been considered for the award. Without a doubt the generosity and leadership of Ken Melrose made him a leading candidate as the Rossi recipient. After the award ceremony, reception doors opened to additional show attendees that included members of the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). These show partners had concluded their own opening sessions allowing all the groups to come together.

The next morning, GCBAA was honored to join the other presenting partners for the Trade Show Opening Ceremony.

In true Texas fashion, show partners rode out onto the green in a Wells Fargo stagecoach led by a four-horse team. Show partners chipped into the golf green on Inside the Ropes, and finally, GCSAA President Bill Maynard hit a ceremonial drive into the trade show (using a foam golf ball).

With over 11,000 attendees and just over 500 exhibitors (over 80 GCBAA exhibitors) the show was a buzz. With chilly weather in San Antonio, people stayed inside catching up with old friends and seeing all the new technology and services available to the golf industry. There is not enough time in the week to be able to see everything!

As the trade show winded down Thursday, the GCBAA Foundation introduced its Sticks for Kids Program and drew the winning ticket of the 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle raffle as well as the next 50 winners who earned their $100 back.

We were thrilled to see one of our own GCBAA Certified Builder’s name on the winning ticket – Mike Roberts with Landirr, Inc. Although Mike says he only purchased one ticket, we know that over the years he has supported this great cause and is certainly deserving of the prize. This makes four consecutive winners of this raffle from Florida!

After the show and once members began breaking down their exhibits, the Association, along with its volunteers and partners, began the task of cleaning up over 400 tons of material that were used to produce Inside the Ropes. By Saturday evening after 20 full-sized, end-dump trucks left filled to the top with products, the keys were returned to the convention center. One of the most exciting parts of this year’s build was the fact that all the material was able to be recycled to a nearby golf course. It was great to see the sod and aggregate get repurposed to a great home – The Club at Rebecca Creek in San Antonio.

Whether you attended this year’s Golf Industry Show or simply followed our Facebook and Twitter posts from your office, it was a remarkable week! Your Association tried new things, had a tremendous footprint on the trade show floor and took its allied partnerships to new levels. A big thanks to the team at GCSAA for orchestrating an unbelievable trade show and experience for Show attendees. We’re thrilled to be a small part of it and excited for future opportunities!

“Inside the Ropes” makes a Splash at the Golf Industry Show Most of us have heard the term and have been a part of a “Napkin Idea.” Probably one of the most famous stories of a napkin idea comes from 1994 in California when a group of Pixar executives were wrapping up discussions on the blockbuster hit “Toy Story.” The story goes that the group was meeting at a small café and realized they needed to figure out what they were going to do next and the importance of the early planning process. Using napkins from the café the group began sketching ideas and even characters for future Pixar hits. These napkin ideas eventually became future hits including “A Bugs Life,” “Monsters, Inc.,” “Finding Nemo,” and “WALL-E.” The most important part of this story is the comments Pixar has made in recent years about crediting the success of these movies that although some of the initial ideas did come from this lunch meeting, countless discussions, meetings, individuals, and blood, sweat, and tears go into a napkin idea before it ever becomes a reality.

Napkins may not have been used, but on the back of some of the previous meeting agendas and in small notebooks the group began to bullet out ideas for the education and even began conceptualizing what the area would look like. The group knew the idea of “Inside the Ropes” meant a tournament feel or a finishing hole at a major. With this concept in mind the idea of bleachers for spectators, television stage and tower, and the green as a stage for education presentations was born. The initial concept drawing was forwarded to a few ASGCA members who helped the group align with their fellow member Shawn Smith with Hills Forrest. Shawn was recommended for his creativity and expertise in creating two-dimensional imagery of golf holes.

Shortly after meeting with Shawn, concept drawings were available to start sharing with industry partners. Over the next 10 months Inside the Ropes was finalized into what we all enjoyed at the 2018 Golf Industry Show.

A similar story can be told of the 2018 Inside the Ropes project at the Golf Industry Show. In the spring of 2017, after the Orlando Golf Industry Show where the show partners had created a 9,000 square foot green along with bunkers and other golf course features, the group was wrapping up a meeting in San Antonio where the Industry Advisory Council had met to discuss plans for the next show. During the meetings a few important challenges/opportunities were identified. In short, the new convention center space allowed for the trade show registration to be held inside the exhibit halls rather than the lobby along with the hall location being in an area that was not necessarily the most conducive layout to drive traffic. That along with ideas that had been suggested for future builds, a group of association staffers retreated to

Countless hours of planning all led to a four-day build window, a 2-day show, and a 2-day clean-up of nearly 20,000 square feet of space. This project was by far the largest construction project to date for the Golf Industry Show. None of this could have been accomplished had it not been for the countless volunteers, show partners, exhibitors, convention center staff, and Freeman, the general contractor and strategic partner for GCSAA and the Golf Industry Show. This project involved over 100 individuals in one way or another to benefit the thousands of show attendees.

It has been an honor to serve on the GCBAA Board of Directors for the past 10 years and it is even a bigger honor to have been elected to serve as the President of this great Association.

It was a bitter-sweet experience the day I was handed the gavel from our Past President, Scott Veazey. On my walk over to the GCBAA Board Meeting on the morning of the first day of the GIS in San Antonio, I received word that Brent Wadsworth had passed earlier that morning.

While the loss of one of the great pioneers of our profession and a personal mentor was setting in, I was reminded of his passion for the golf industry, his everlasting spirit of determination and one of his primary tenets in business and in life; treat everyone you meet with respect and be honest and fair. I hope I can continue to represent our Association in a manner that would make Brent Wadsworth proud.

As I read through several past “President’s Perspectives” from previous issues of Earth Shaping News, it’s remarkable to see how the dynamics of our Association have changed over the past 10 years, not to mention the past 45. In 2010, we were in the midst of the Great Recession and golf course work had virtually ground to a halt. In 2014, the tide was beginning to turn and work was slowly coming back, providing opportunities for those companies that had weathered the storm. As we begin 2018, it appears the industry has a made the incredible rebound that we all hoped for but were not sure would ever arrive. It has arrived.

The business climate has changed and growth is on the horizon. Companies are hiring and expanding and new companies are being formed to take advantage of the growing demand in all aspects of the golf industry; planning, design, construction and the supply of equipment and materials. With a metered response to this revitalized demand and rising tide of optimism, there is opportunity for many to do well.

The GCBAA has also seen the effects of this optimism and resultant change in opportunity.

Over the past several years we have invested in Regional Meetings and new initiatives to increase the awareness of our Association. We have developed stronger and more collaborative relationships with our allied associations to bring recognition to the important and valuable resources available from our members. We continue to seek opportunities to be involved where the golf industry is being discussed and public awareness of our positive message is being broadened.

We continue to be a member-driven association and it is vitally important that we continue to support our members and our Association. This support can be through participation in one of the many board committees, sponsorship of Association meetings, promoting membership in the Association or simply participating in our “Buy from Within” initiative. My personal thanks go out to each individual or company that has diligently supported our Association in any way, large or small.

A special note of thanks to my good friend Rick Boylan who will be moving off the GCBAA Board and into his new role on the Board of Governors. He has proven to be an invaluable resource to our Association and I am proud to know him. I would like to thank Past President Scott Veazey for his dedication and years of service and leadership to our Association and look forward to his continued involvement. I would also like to thank outgoing board members Frank Warden (Toro), Stephanie Zimmerman (ADS/Hancor), Terry Gwinn (Best Sand) and Dennis Wagner (Hunter Industries) for their much-appreciated service and selfless contributions over many years. All have become great friends during my time on the board and I look forward to their continued participation and support of the GCBAA. I would also like to welcome our new board members Mike Perez (VM Golf Services), Bob Sylvester (Toro), Ian Williams (Rain Bird) and Jon Truttmann (Hunter Industries). I look forward to working together with all members of our Board in the continued leadership of our Association.

I am excited for the opportunity and look forward to serving as your President for the next two years and hope to increase the value of being a member of the GCBAA through my service. If there is ever anything I can do to assist in any way, please feel free to reach out to me directly.

A final note of thanks to Justin Apel and Samantha Huff for their dedication and continued efforts to guide our Association and for their professional representation of the GCBAA. I look forward to continuing to work with them and everyone in the Association in the coming years.

Executive Director Notes This update is bitter sweet for me. Normally I wait until the end of my message to thank board members for their service as well as any special recognition to those that have helped the organization. For this issue it seems only fitting to place the thanks up front because this time around if it had not been for these individuals, I honestly wonder where I personally would be as well as this organization. These individuals have gone above and beyond to help grow GCBAA and our Foundation. First, a special thank you to Stephanie Bruss who is moving onto a unique, new opportunity. Sam and I are really going to miss Steph; she was a great co-worker and fit our office culture very well. Without a doubt she leaves some big shoes to fill. Staff is also going to miss Frank Warden and Stephanie Zimmerman who have been valuable assets on the board. A man with many titles including, Executive Board member, Committee Chairman, Foundation Liaison, soon-to-be Perry Dye Recipient, and most importantly friend; who I literally had talked with at least once a week regarding various Association activities, Dennis Wagner is stepping away leaving a significant gap in the group. I have said it before that if you look up the definition of the word “volunteer” you will see a picture of Wags. Coupled with Rick Boylan moving off the Executive Board as outgoing President and there are many new faces around our board room. They say change is a good thing but the knowledge and willingness to volunteer their time will make their replacements have to step up in a big way to keep the momentum they each brought to the Association.

Finally, someone who I consider a good friend and role model to me, Immediate Past President Scott Veazey will continue serving on the board but has passed the gavel. The best way to describe our relationship over the past few years is almost parental. While he gave me the slack in the chain that was needed to maneuver through some relationship building and exploratory conversations to drive our Association’s mission statement and test waters for strategic planning, he was also a solid force whenever it was time to step back and reevaluate. Scott never doubted the abilities of staff or myself…or at least never let it show. He was the first one to make sure we had all the tools we needed and always made time to understand any situation we were working through. Our weekly phone call check-ins were always enjoyable and almost always started with family news, making sure we were all doing well personally. While there was always business to be discussed and addressed, Scott had a unique way of understanding the dynamics and moving parts involved in managing an association. I could go on and on about how honored we all were to have Scott as our President and undoubtedly, anyone who knows or has gotten to know Scott already understands where we are coming from. Scott is a good friend and out of the many accomplishments Scott was involved with during his time as President; I want him to know that for me his greatest was the example he left with me and how much I learned from him, specifically on how to be an effective leader moving forward.

He has inspired me on how to live and manage my life and balance family, friends, and work all making them important yet balancing it in a healthy way.

Be sure to take time to review all the articles in this issue and see how your Association and staff are staying busy. We are thrilled to continue the mission of the GCBAA and add value to the membership through various partnership programs along with expanding our education offerings through meetings and networking. Mark your calendars for upcoming Regional Meetings already being scheduled for 2018 along with our upcoming Summer Meeting in Nashville.

Foundation Update I hope that everyone had the opportunity to see the great things the GCBAA did at the Golf Industry Show. The detailed green and bunker work “Inside the Ropes” truly showed the craftsmanship of our builder members, the diversity of products sold by our associate members and the dedication of our Association to the golf industry. It was a wonderful showcase for our Association.

I would also like to thank those who participated in the Harley raffle. It was a great financial success for the Foundation. Given the realistic/cynical nature of our members, we all know that those $100 tickets were purchased as a donation rather than an as a legitimate opportunity to win. But GCBAA member Mike Roberts of Landirr, Inc. did win and we are delighted that his investment in the future of the game paid off for him.

Due to your generosity, the Foundation is committed to growing the game through our three primary initiatives: Sticks for Kids, the joint USGA/LPGA/GCBAA Girls Golf programs, and the Sticks for Kids in Schools initiative. In addition to these programs, the Foundation also makes a significant donation to Golf 20/20 to support the overall health of the game of golf.

Lastly, I want to take the opportunity to discuss the relationship between the Association and the Foundation. While technically the two entities are distinct organizations, both share the same goal – to improve our industry. The Association does a wonderful job of this by providing many networking and educational opportunities for its members. These opportunities clearly are the result of a considerable amount of effort by our staff, members of the Executive Board, and key committee members who dedicate innumerable hours to the cause. The Foundation is in the enviable position of being the spending arm of the Golf Course Builders. I have had the opportunity to serve on both sides and, frankly, the spending side is more fun.

GCBAA Foundation Welcomes Three New Members The GCBAA Foundation introduced John Holmes (Atlas Turf), Allan MacCurrach III (MacCurrach Golf), and Chris Seiberling (LMC Insurance & Risk Management) as the three newest members to the Board of Directors on March 1, 2018.

“John, Allan and Chris are excellent additions to the Board of Directors, both in terms of their willingness to serve and their passion for supporting the Foundation and Sticks for Kids,” said Tom Shapland, president of the GCBAA Foundation. “Their dedication to elevating the Foundation will be a tremendous asset moving forward.”

Remaining Directors include Mark Arrimour (Total Turf Services), Jimmy Kirchdorfer, Jr. (ISCO Industries), Bill Kubly (Landscapes Unlimited LLC), Rick Lohman (The Toro Company), and Doug York (Ewing Irrigation). The liaison between the GCBAA and Foundation Board, Dennis Wagner (Hunter Industries), is stepping down after many years of dedicated service, and will be greatly missed. Ellen Davis (SportZmix Solutions) has replaced him in this important role.

GCBAA Elects Board Officers at Winter Board Meeting The Golf Course Builders Association of America board of directors elected its new executive officers Feb. 6 at its Winter Meeting in San Antonio, in conjunction with the Golf Industry Show. Patrick Karnick of Wadsworth Golf Construction Company was ushered in as the board’s new residing president.

In addition to Karnick, officers of the board of directors include: Judd Duininck, Duininck Golf (president-elect); Ellen Davis, SportZmix Solutions – Waupaca Sand & Solutions (vice president); John McDonald, II, McDonald & Sons, Inc. (treasurer); Ian Williams, Rain Bird Corporation (secretary) and new to the Board; and Scott Veazey, Southeastern Golf, Inc. (immediate past president).

All officers serve two-year terms and will preside over the board of directors, which consists of the officers and 10 directors. Human Resources EMPLOYEES IN LOVE? GET IT IN WRITING IN A LOVE CONTRACT!

After just coming through February or the “month of love” you may find that several of your employees are involved in relationships with fellow employees. These situations can be challenging on employers and give rise to questions such as what is appropriate behavior in the workplace and how to avoid sexual harassment claims. Love Contracts, or Consensual Relationship Agreements, are a step companies can take to outline what is acceptable behavior and also help reduce exposure to harassment lawsuits. According to CareerBuilder’s annual office romance survey, 41 percent of employees indicated that they had been in a relationship with a co-worker within the last year.

A major concern with workplace romances involves the difference of authority between the two parties. In many cases, a supervisor dating a subordinate may raise suspicion of favoritism and unfair treatment to other employees.

These agreements, entered into by two employees in a consensual relationship attempt to alleviate some of the favoritism concerns, set out permissible and prohibited actions of both the employees and employers, and handle what happens if and when the relationship ends.

In order to deal with these concerns and situations, Love Contracts should contain several items. First, the contract should refer or recite to the company’s anti-harassment policy. If your company hasn’t reviewed your antiharassment policy recently, or perish the thought, does not have one, now is the time to update! Further, the contract should contain an affirmation from both parties that the relationship is consensual and was entered into voluntarily.

This statement may help protect the employer from a lawsuit if the relationship ends. Occasionally, an employee (many times a subordinate dating a supervisor) will claim to have been forced to enter into the relationship. This affirmation may help convince a jury that the relationship was voluntary. However, there may be some concern that the affirmation was forced as well.

Next, the Love Contract should include a provision regarding public displays of affection. Most employers prohibit this type of act and should be indicated in the contract. The contract should provide a general description of what would constitute a public display of affection. The parties should also affirm that there will be no negative impact on their work performance and that employees may be moved into different roles if work performance becomes an issue. The parties should also agree to a commitment of professionalism after the relationship ends. Many times,

the major problems arise after the relationship ends and this kind of language in the contract may help deter undesired actions by employees.

Finally, if the relationship goes south, employees should feel comfortable informing the employer, or a designated person, about unwelcomed advances. When one party wants the relationship to continue, while the other does not, harassment may occur. This may place some exposure on the employer if situations are not handled correctly.

In certain situations where one of the parties to the Love Contract is the designated person handling harassment claims, the Love Contract should provide a secondary person to inform. It is imperative that any employee has a neutral person to inform about possible harassment.

It is important to note, a signed Love Contract does not guarantee the employer protection from possible liability for sexual harassment. As mentioned above, employees may claim they were forced to enter into the contract or the employer did not follow through with their responsibilities under the contract. Once notified of a possible sexual harassment situation, employers must take the steps outlined in their anti-harassment policies to correct the situation.

Love Contracts, while not a guaranteed protection from liability, help describe permissible and prohibited actions, take steps to avoid favoritism, and maintain workplace performance. Importantly, Love Contracts may help maintain a stable workplace if a relationship ends poorly.

If your company does not have any policies or procedures in place to handle workplace romance, a Love Contract is an option. However, once an employer starts down the Love Contract path – uniform and constant enforcement is essential. Remember, each state may have its own position on Love Contracts, so check your state law before implementing a Love Contract.

Dennis Wagner to Receive Golf Course Builders Association of America’s Perry Dye Service Award Golf Club’s Sticks for Kids Little League program, conducted countless site visits and tours, and even serves as auctioneer for the Foundation’s annual fundraiser.

Rick Boylan, GCBAA past president, added “It has been an honor and a privilege to either have personally worked with or know the five other recipients of our GCBAA Dye Award.

Our choice of Dennis Wagner for this award further validates recognition given to exceptional people doing exceptional things for our association.”

In honor of more than two decades of commitment to the Golf Course Builders Association of America and its membership, Dennis Wagner will in summer 2018 receive the prestigious Perry Dye Service Award. Wagner is credited by association members with developing and improving many long-term association programs – as well as serving in leadership roles on the board of directors and foundation board. In his professional life, he is the U.S. Golf Sales Manager for Hunter Industries, a charter member of the GCBAA. “Dennis takes being a volunteer to the next level,” said Justin Apel, GCBAA executive director. “There’s never been a task that he was unwilling to tackle. Furthermore, he is an amazing motivator, always able to recruit others into involvement and support of the cause.”

Among his many accomplishments, Wagner adjusted the GCBAA’s annual raffle ticket price from $20 to $100, which substantially increased charitable donations to the GCBAA Foundation. In fact, over multiple years, Wagner sold the most raffle tickets to colleagues and friends. He also introduced the Challenge Coin gift in Orlando at the GCBAA’s 40th Anniversary gathering in 2011, worked with Sandhill Crane

The Perry Dye Service Award is given periodically by the Golf Course Builders Association of America to recognize an exceptional member of the GCBAA. Recipients have shown themselves to be loyal members of the association, who unselfishly contribute their time and influence to foster positive changes and strive for continuous improvement of the association. The award is named after Perry Dye, who during the early development years of the GCBAA exemplified these characteristics when he provided financial assistance to stabilize the GCBAA during its inception and early years.

This is the sixth time the Perry Dye Service Award has been granted. Previous recipients include Perry Dye in 2005, Jim Kirchdorfer, Sr. (2006), Rick Elyea (2010), Steve Christman (2013), and Tommy Sasser (2015). Wagner will be honored with the award at the upcoming annual GCBAA Summer Meeting to be held the week of August 13, 2018 in Nashville, TN.

Developer’s Guide USING CONTENT MARKETING TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

Content Marketing was unknown in late 1956 when wily Sam Phillips, the Memphis-based musical producer who launched Elvis Presley on his path to stardom two years earlier, realized he was hosting something worthy of attention…four Hall of Famers singing together. Many golf course builders may be missing similarly engaging, news-worthy and interesting events that show the capabilities and interesting experiences of the builder through online messages and images intended to stimulate interest.

Like many small businesses, Phillips’ Sun Records Studio was a news making place. On this day, rockabilly legend Cark Perkins was in the studio to record a follow-up to his “Blue Suede Shoes” hit. Hanging out with Presley and Perkins was his friend, Johnny Cash whose “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Walk the Line” had made him a star. The fourth member of this coincidental foursome was a brash pianist by the name of Jerry Lee Lewis, who was working recording sessions for Phillips at $15 per hour.

Phillips, ever the promoter, sent for a photographer at the nearby Memphis Press-Scimitar whose image of the four ran with the caption that has become legend…”Million Dollar Quartet”. That is content marketing.

Golf course builders have stories to tell and activities that may be of interest to members and the broader audience of potential members. Most small businesses need to fortify their brand awareness for prospective customers. Those prospects are often friends of current clients.

Here are a handful of ways for you to put content marketing to work: 1. Build and share a photo library. Develop a ready supply of professionally produced photos of the courses your firm has built. Inform local, regional, and national real estate, golf, and lifestyle publications that you will share these images when needed – you only ask for attribution. Most of these publications have budgets that are stretched and unrelenting deadlines so they benefit from knowing of ready-to-use content.

2. Curate interesting content that helps others get to know your business and its capabilities. Tell stories about projects on which your company has worked. Bring emphasis to the beauty you have created, merged with nature using environmentally sensitive methods. Provide people with opportunities to connect with your company and its experience. Provide worksheets and planning tools that enable greens committees, developers and golf course owners to understand what you do and how to renovate or develop in a cost-effective manner. Experience and expertise are important to the uninitiated. Show that you have both.

3. Reward loyalty with “touch-ups”. Return to past projects and conduct inspections and updates. Show new methods that open the door to renovations and upgrades. Over the past few years, new sand bunkers have been all the rage. Show your past clients how they can further improve their course with a new round of touch-ups. The generosity that you show will be reciprocated.

4. Increase engagement efficiency with infographics. Your customers are busy. Brief them and make it quick! Use images collected in one format to provide quick snapshots of new methods for course construction, more efficient practices for drainage and / or retention basins. Provide financial metrics that are easy for potential customers to use for calculating before they call you.

5. Expand the social reach of your business. Use social media in the ways and to the extent appropriate for your company. The great force of social media is its connectivity and expansive reach. Create focused social media messaging that reinforces the core values of your company. The keys are that (a) all communications should be planned in advance so that no messages are spontaneous; (b) photographs of new projects and finished work tell the story that your company is always involved in interesting projects; and (c) nature-oriented stories and photographs serve to reinforce your commitment to environmental stewardship and engages customers with the work being done.

The musical greats entertained themselves singing their shared roots in gospel music during production breaks. While content marketing you can create brings immediate impacts, the splashy nickname given them quickly caught on with rock-and-roll fans who would not actually hear the music made that day for 25 years when the first portions of the lost tapes were discovered and released.

National Golf Day Set for April 25th on Capitol Hill National Golf Day celebrates its 11th anniversary through the game’s $70 billion economic and $4 billion annual charitable impact, along with many environmental and fitness benefits. On April 25, industry leaders will meet with Members of Congress, the Executive Branch and federal agencies on Capitol Hill to discuss golf’s 15,000-plus diverse businesses, two million jobs impacted, tax revenue creation and tourism value.

For the second year in a row, those attending will have an opportunity to participate in a community service project on the National Mall the day before National Golf Day. Aimed at beautification, preservation and helping the National Park Service with turf deferred maintenance, this is a great opportunity to showcase the golf industry on a national platform.

GCBAA Members Accelerate through Upgrade Process The GCBAA Board of Directors announced last Fall the updated Membership categories where the program has been streamlined for GCBAA Builder Members to upgrade their membership from entry level “Builder/Irrigation Contractor Applicant” towards Certification. In past years there were intermediate categories called “Associate Builder, Associate Renovation Builder, and Associate Irrigation Contractor” where applicant members could apply. The GCBAA Membership Committee would review those applications and review the work submitted as well as references that were included with the work.

The criteria to upgrade from the Applicant Level is to show the equivalent of two 18-hole projects within the

last three years. Applicant members can apply to upgrade once a minimum of 18 months has passed from the time the company has become an Applicant Member or once the company can show they have been in business for at least three full years upon the date the upgrade would take effect. The Applicant Level Member must submit project references that spanned the last three years for consideration.

Currently the GCBAA Membership Committee is reviewing 10 applicants for members who are upgrading. If your company is interested or thinks they might meet the qualifications please contact the GCBAA office.

The team presented to nearly 50 managers the importance of function first in golf course design and construction.

Last summer during a presentation and discussion at the GCBAA Regional Meeting in Dublin, Ohio the group discussed this topic. Knowing that golf course design can be accomplished relatively easy as far as creating an aesthetically pleasing yet challenging for the player, if the design does not function the drop-down effect hurts the overall performance of the facility. The discussion lead

to the need to help educate the industry on designing and building and renovating golf courses to function and remain sustainable. The ASGCA and GCBAA partnered and shared this education idea with the education teams at the CMAA who accepted the presentation for their 2018 annual meeting. The GCBAA and ASGCA will continue to work together to help spread the message of the importance of renovating and building facilities to match the sustainable models and best management practices being implemented by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. We feel that this team approach will help improve the overall performance of the industry and sustainable practices and in the end, benefit the overall health of the game.

Mike Roach Memorial Scholarship aims to help students in Turfgrass Management Program HISTORY This scholarship was established and named in memory of Mike Roach, a GCBAA Certified Golf Course Irrigation Contractor who passed unexpectedly in October 2017. He was from Walhalla, South Carolina and devoted his entire 30-year career to the golf course irrigation industry owning and operating an Irrigation Construction Company called MRI, Inc. During Mike’s 30+ years in the golf course irrigation business, he worked well over 100 golf courses throughout the United States and mentored many young men that worked with MRI, including Ashley Wilkinson, one of Horry Georgetown’s (HGTC) Professors in the Turf Management Program.

PURPOSE The purpose of this scholarship is to assist students who require financial assistance to attend HGTC and specifically those planning to or are currently enrolled in the Turfgrass Management Program. By offering this scholarship, it is the hope of Mike’s family, colleagues and friends, that this scholarship’s impact will result in the betterment of our youth in general, and directly impact deserving students looking to build a career in the golf course turf industry.

President George Herbert Walker Bush to Receive ASGCA Donald Ross Award

BROOKFIELD, Wis. – George H.W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States (1989-1993), has been chosen as the 2018 recipient of the ASGCA Donald Ross Award. This award, given annually since 1976, is presented to a person who has made a significant contribution to the game of golf and the profession of golf course architecture. It will be presented to Bush in April as part of the 2018 ASGCA Annual Meeting in Houston.

“President Bush exemplifies the highest traditions of golf, from displaying the values of good sportsmanship to respecting pace of play, and everything in between,” said ASGCA President John Sanford. “ASGCA is proud to add President Bush to the list of distinguished Donald Ross Award recipients.”

The Bush family relationship with golf goes back generations.

His maternal grandfather, George Walker, served as United States Golf Association president. Today, the Walker Cup bears his name.

A member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Bush has actively supported numerous national and international golf events, including the Presidents Cup, Ryder Cup, Walker Cup and Houston Open.

“Golf clears the mind,” he told Sports Illustrated in a 1991 interview. “I don’t concentrate too much out here. I’m in it for the competition, the camaraderie.”

The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and the Els for Autism Foundation are teaming up to encourage golf facilities to host BLUE-OUT Days to raise awareness for autism.

USGA Publishes Updated Putting Green Construction Recommendations In February, the USGA published an updated version of its “USGA Recommendations for a Method of Putting Green Construction.” The document details construction of what is commonly referred to as a USGA green. The recommendations have been revised from the most-recent version – published in 2004 – to account for advances in scientific understanding, materials testing, technology and construction methods. The USGA has also published an updated version of its “Building the USGA Putting Green: Tips for Success” document that provides detailed information on implementing the recommendations and addressing some of the challenges that arise in the field.

The 2018 revisions to the Recommendations and Tips for Success are not dramatic. In fact, the fundamental aspects of building a USGA green have not changed much since the Recommendations were first published in 1960. However, when scientifically valid methods to improve performance, reduce costs and simplify construction arise, the USGA incorporates those improvements into the Recommendations.

Here are some of the key 2018 revisions: •

A section on assembling your team has been added to help identify key participants in the putting green construction process and describe their responsibilities.

Putting green construction is always a collaborative effort. It is important that key team members be in close communication from the early planning stages.

•

There is expanded information about material selection and testing. The updated Recommendations account for advances in material testing and provide added guidance on selecting sand, gravel and amendments – including information on what to avoid.

•

Use of a wicking barrier along the putting green cavity wall is clearly stated as optional. The decision to use a wicking barrier should be based on the specific characteristics of the native soil and rootzone mixture at each individual project.

•

It is recommended to install perimeter drains – i.e., smile drains – at any low point along the edge of the putting green cavity where water is likely to accumulate, not just at the lowest point. It is also emphasized that perimeter drains must be installed immediately adjacent to the cavity wall, otherwise there may be negative consequences for turf health and playability along the edges of the putting green.

•

Installing an intermediate layer between the gravel and rootzone mixture remains optional when properly sized gravel is available – as is typically the case. The intermediate layer is a requirement only in rare circumstances where scientific testing determines that there is a risk of the rootzone mixture migrating into the gravel layer.

•

New technology and construction methods are discussed in the Tips for Success document, including GPS applications that are becoming common in putting green construction. There is also a discussion of what has been called the “Variable Depth” method in which the recommended 12-inch rootzone depth is altered in high and low areas of the putting green to improve soil moisture consistency. Research suggests that there may be benefits to this approach, but specifics on how to implement this method consistently and the cost impacts are unclear at this time.

The 2018 USGA Recommendations and Tips for Success contain new and updated information about building the USGA putting green. USGA Agronomists are always available to assist in following these recommendations and implementing them successfully at each unique project.

NCA Takes Up Your Call Taking the Fight Wherever it Goes

While a lion’s share of the National Club Association’s (NCA) work focuses on federal legislative and regulatory policy matters impacting private clubs, that is not our only task. NCA actively fights for clubs across the country on the state and local levels to ensure all clubs have a voice.

New Club Battle in New York Last year New York State Assemblywoman Sandra Galef (D) introduced a bill that would allow local taxing units the right to assess a club’s property at its highest and best use rather than assessing it at a recreational or commercial use. Such a change could significantly increase costs for clubs and result in job losses for club employees at facilities across the state.

In response, NCA reached out to clubs in New York to ensure they were informed and ready to engage in the fight.

NCA also contacted the New York State Club Association (NYSCA), to help arrange for a statewide club call to discuss hiring local government relations specialists who could take our concerns to the state capitol and advocate on behalf of private clubs.

NCA then began assisting the NYSCA in raising the funds to meet the contractual obligations required by the firm. We assisted in a direct mail campaign and through personal requests at New York club managers’ meetings to ensure the funds were collected. As a result, our lobbyists are educating leaders in Albany regarding the likely impact an increase in private club property taxes will have on club employees and the local economy.

Our efforts have already shown success. Recently, Galef postponed presenting the bill to her own committee—likely because she is getting feedback from committee members expressing some concerns—which means our message is getting through.

Defending Clubs in Maryland

For most Maryland clubs, they are entitled to enter into an agreement with the Maryland State Department of Assessment and Taxation (SDAT) that prohibits them from selling their land for development in return for a minimal assessed value of the club’s land. The new bill proposes that any private club may still enter into an SDAT agreement, but the new assessed value will be one percent of that fair market value. For most clubs, this would be an exponential increase in assessed value and property tax liability—a five- to ten-fold increase in their assessed value per acre— inhibiting a club’s ability to keep and develop its staff, offer programming and in some cases, remain open.

Unlike New York, there was no Maryland State Club Association, so NCA worked with local general managers to create the Maryland Coalition of Concerned Clubs.

With the coalition started, we then focused on securing the local government relations team that could communicate our concerns in Annapolis. We selected a firm whose lead lobbyist is not only a former Maryland state senator but also the author of the very law we are fighting to protect— giving our coalition key knowledge on how to defend the current law and communicate our message.

With the legislature entering its final months, NCA and our coalition are pulling out all the stops to ensure the success we had with the local Montgomery County bill is translated to this statewide bill.

Protecting All Clubs NCA wholeheartedly fights for clubs at national, state and local levels on legal, legislative and regulatory issues. As the two recent examples show, NCA takes seriously its commitment to protect, defend and advance the interest and well-being of private social and recreational clubs.

The NGF’s Inaugural Top 100 Businesses in Golf The National Golf Foundation recently introduced the inaugural NGF Top 100 Businesses in Golf as part of an ongoing effort to highlight the vitality, size and diversity of the industry.

The game has a healthy and far-reaching footprint in the U.S., with an economic impact of almost $70 billion. As such, the NGF initiative was created to recognize and celebrate the most successful, influential and prominent companies, organizations and associations in golf.

including NGF assessments on influence throughout the golf industry, innovations, prominence and leadership (both within the sport and a particular category), and contributions to the growth and vitality of the game as well as to the collective societal good.

The NGF GOLF 100 is a biennial list – not ranking – that highlights those businesses of fundamental importance to the industry, to both facilities and consumers. In some respects, it is the business equivalent of rankings that identify the top 100 golf courses in the U.S. It’s also a natural extension of the NGF mission: fostering the growth and vitality of the game while providing the research, data and insights that help those who make a living in golf succeed.

The NGF GOLF 100 is broken down by various sectors of the golf industry, from apparel and equipment companies to turf equipment and supply companies, course builders and management companies. It’s why you’ll find Top 100 representatives that range from equipment juggernauts Callaway and TaylorMade to turf care behemoth Toro and construction giant Landscapes Unlimited.

The NGF GOLF 100 is limited to businesses (along with organizations or associations) whose primary focus is the golf industry or that have a sizeable and dedicated golf division.

Eight distinct weighted criteria were taken into consideration when assessing individual companies or organizations.

Financial success was a key component of the selection process, with companies and organizations evaluated by their annual revenue figures and their overall growth rate and trajectory.

But other, more subjective, criteria were also factored in,

Business Management Institutes Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Alexandria, VA – This year marks a milestone for CMAA’s Professional Development as the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) marks the 30th Anniversary of the Business Management Institutes (BMI). The first course, Business Management Institute I – The Basic Club Management School, was offered at Georgia State University, February 7-14, 1988.

The Business Management Institute is a flourishing, indemand professional development program that has become the most well-respected education initiative of the hospitality industry. Each program is an intensive learning experience – including both technical instructions on day-to-day and longterm career aspects of club management - taught by highly qualified university faculty, industry experts, and experienced club managers. The multi-faceted BMI program includes five core courses and four electives including BMI International.

Two visionaries helped to bring these programs to fruition – A. Christopher Borders, CCM, who came up with the original idea (at the time the Clubhouse Manager at the Atlanta Athletic Club, Atlanta, GA), and CMAA’s longtime Academic Advisor, Joe Perdue, CCM, CHE, the architect and innovator of BMI. From 1988 to 2014, Joe attended more than 300 programs in-person.

Today, programs are held at the preeminent hospitality schools across the country including Michigan State, Cornell, California Polytechnic, and Georgia State. The Importance of Telling Your Story

Why do great stories fall through the cracks?

Media receives countless story ideas daily and can be tough to cut through the clutter. In our business, we call it “storyselling” vs. “storytelling” as the idea needs to be timely, newsworthy and relevant to the journalist being pitched.

Public relations might not always be at the top of your priority list, but it should be in 2018. If you don’t promote your brand and the importance of the golf construction industry, who will?

Tips to consider:

Each year, Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA) members partake in hundreds of exciting projects around the world. Unfortunately, many of these unique stories go untold in an industry thirsting for engaging humaninterest content.

Current Situation From 1986 to 2005, the golf industry saw a huge spike in golf courses with more than 4,000 (or one per day during) built.

Today, America boasts 45% of the world’s supply.

According to the National Golf Foundation, since 2006 there have been more than 1,000 major golf course renovations to the tune of $3 billion. This doesn’t include small construction projects such as tweaking bunkers, greens or cart paths, so the impact is actually greater.

1. Share Back Home – When engaged for a new project, consult with the GCBAA home office to ensure it has the information to share via digital and social channels.

Your fellow builders should know and be proud of the association’s continued growth.

2. Stories are Local – Research nearby broadcast, print and online editorial media to determine journalists with histories covering community activities like new and renovated golf courses. Upon approval from your client, a quick phone call or e-mail with an exciting story angle could resonate well and lead to a potential story.

3. Niche Outreach – Is your story a fit for national golf media? How about construction trade publications?

Maybe “green industry” outlets like landscaping?

One story idea could be suited for multiple B2B and B2C audiences, so don’t limit your communication to local newspapers.

As supply-and-demand aim toward equilibrium, course closings will continue to outpace openings; this is a healthy correction.

More important, courses which have thrived from the golf course construction boom are desperate for updates and ripe for the special touch of GCBAA members.

Securing editorial about your work isn’t as easy as it may seem.

However, business development is often predicated on brand awareness and popularity as people believe what they read, see and hear. So, establishing your marketing strategy with public relations as a priority may be the ticket to your next construction job.

Why Public Relations?

Since the early 1970s, GCBAA has been a driving force in the game yet doesn’t always receive the attention it deserves.

MOVERS & SHAPERS NMP Golf Construction Corp. announces appointment of Darryl M. Bartlett as a Senior Project Manager Darryl has been working in the golf course industry since the late ‘80s and has over 100 golf related projects under his belt. Throughout his experience, he has acquired a wide range of skills acting as Shaper, Estimator, Supervisor and Project Manager, making him an asset for any company he worked with. Furthermore, his satisfaction-oriented character and interpersonal skills make him a favorite with the clients.

Among the many projects he worked on, it is important to mention his outstanding involvement in the following golf courses: Links at Hiawatha Landing, Apalachin, NY – 1993. Darryl’s first 18-hole project as Lead Shaper at age 19, with Cornish Silva & Mungeam.

Edina Country Club, Edina, MN – 2010. Darryl had the most fun shaping this golf course with Duininck Golf and Tom Lehman.

Ponkapoag Golf Course, Canton, MA – 2014. Darryl was Project Manager on this very technical project providing lots of challenge, with NMP Golf Construction Corp. & Brian Silva Design.

At NMP Golf Construction Corp., we have the pleasure of working with Darryl since 2013. For the past 5 years, we have witnessed first-hand his knowledge, his dedication, his passion, his skills and his determination, making him the natural choice to take on this new position in our company.

GCBAA Foundation Gives to Golf 20/20 Each Quarter GOLF 20/20 issues to their stakeholder group a “Scorecard” report detailing the progress of each of the various programs and initiatives underway. The Golf Course Builders Association of America has supported GOLF 20/20 for nearly 15 years by contributing financially and in-kind each year to support the various causes. The GCBAA Board of Directors reviews each year the activities and evaluates their support contribution.

Without a doubt the board members see the value in the programming and contributes at the highest level it can sustain with the current organization budget. While the actual dollar amount may appear to pale in comparison to some of the other contributors; based on the actual percentage to budget the organization is a top contributor. In recent years the GCBAA Foundation has included this annual contribution in their budget as one of the initiatives of the Foundation's mission. Both GCBAA and Foundation Board members agree that regardless of where the dollars come from, the benefits of this industry program are worthy of support to GCBAA Members.

Here is a snapshot of some of the initiatives of GOLF 20/20: The WE ARE GOLF coalition advocates on behalf of the collective interests of the golf industry in areas such as tax reform, labor issues and environmental matters. WE ARE GOLF also supports National Golf Day. For 2018 National Golf Day is scheduled for Wednesday April 25, 2018 at our Nation’s Capitol. Included within National Golf Day is a community service project on the National Mall the morning of Tuesday, April 24. The project will focus on beautification, preservation and helping the National Park Service with turf deferred maintenance. GCBAA staff and members have attended and supported National Golf Day each year since its inception.

IMAGE OF THE GAME The GCBAA supports this initiative both financially as well as in-kind by supporting reports and information through our printed and social media channels. Supported by Buffalo.Agency, Image of the Game communicates five key message points about the golf industry. The positive Economic Impact, Charitable Impact, Environmental Impact, Health and Wellness benefits, Affordability, and Accessibility. These key points are shared with the media so the industry can be accurately portrayed to the public to increase participation and interest in the game.

INDUSTRY INITIATIVES GOLF 20/20 stakeholders identified five of the top player development programs in the golf industry and has taken a direct focus approach to promote their success. Drive, Chip & Putt, Get Golf Ready, LPGA/USGA Girls Golf (Sticks for Kids now is a partner), PGA Junior League, & The First Tee.
