Greater futures for GCAS athletes thanks to the Greater Building Society Ryan Cumming tees-off for the GCAS at the 2012 Academy Games in Wollongong.

We are half-way through another exciting year of sports development with the Gold Coast Academy of Sport and the GCAS Golf squad have returned from a third highly successful Academy Games.

In sponsorship news, GCAS Chairman Hon Mick Veivers and the board of directors are delighted that the Greater Building Society will be continuing their business level funding for a third year. This announcement was confirmed recently by Don Magin (CEO) and Wayne Russell, Chairman of the Greater Building Society.

“This outstanding level of support is a wonderful example of how the Greater Building Society as a mutual financial institution is investing back into positive community initiatives such as regional academies of sport. The Greater Building Society sponsors the GCAS as well as Hunter, Northern Inland and Central Coast Academies of Sport in NSW,” said Veivers. Apart from funding the operations of the academy, the Greater Building Society is also now providing every GCAS athlete with the opportunity to open an account complete with a complimentary $20 to get a savings plan started. Greater staff will be attending each GCAS program, presenting Financial Fitness seminars and providing an on the spot service for the athletes to open a Greater Building Society account. Gold Sport Sports Program Updates Golf The first-ever third year Alumni program will start in the first week of Term 3. The GCAS Golf program has the in-principle and sponsorship support of the RACV Royal Pines Resort, E-Z-GO Golf Cars, Gold Coast District Men’s and Women’s Golf associations and Sporte Leisure clothing. 1000 athletes gather for the opening ceremony

2012 Academy Games, Wollongong NSW The GCAS would like to thank the athletes and team managers for their participation at another highly successful Academy Games in Wollongong April 13-15 where around 1000 athletes took part in 7 different sports. Tiana Beakey, Alice Burke-Caban (leading girl on handicap), Ryan Cumming, Maddison Coster (leading girl off scratch), Breana Hood, Tyson Johnston-Moir, Peter Lyon (leading boy on handicap), Trent Whiting (leading boy of scratch) The GCAS is hopeful of entering teams from other sports in 2013. Future Stars (north Gold Coast) The academy Future Stars program is unique in that it offers further practical and core sports education development opportunities for athletes who do not fit within the criteria of current academy sport programs, more mature aged pre-elite athletes or whose sport is not currently being offered as a Gold Coast Academy of Sport program. 8 athletes currently have the pleasure of training over a six-month period at one of Australia’s finest sports facilities – the Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Centre. The athletes are expected to be achieving (or aim to achieve with the support of the GCAS) performance benchmarks at either a regional, state or international level.

Football (soccer) This program is professionally structured and designed to provide a high quality environment for players to train and improve. Training sessions are held on Monday and Friday evenings at the RACV Royal Pines Resort International Training Field starting at 5.30pm. Male and female athletes aged U/13-U/20 and aspiring to be elite players and coaches are most welcome to join the sessions. The coaches are implementing cutting edge technologies including video analysis and gps monitoring to assist the athletes in progressing to their maximum level of performance. 2012 GCAS Rugby League ‘Me We’ squad 2012 GCAS Football (soccer) squad

Rugby League GCAS Rugby League core education program is up and running including completion of a basic referees course and a gym training session. The athletes are now looking forward to the off-season practical program when it starts in August. The GCAS would like to thank the Gold Coast District Junior Rugby League and its Operations Manager Gary Phillips for organising funding for the program from the Queensland Rugby League’s SE QLD Division.

Holly Bannatyne - Netball, Keanu Dawson - Rugby League, Jake Gleeson - Rugby League, Alexander Holmes - Rugby Union, Ryan McKillop-Davies – Soccer, Keenan Palasia - Rugby League, Dylan Prideaux - Wakeboarding, Jacob Roby - Rugby League, Shaun Wilson, AFL and Cricket. These athletes are invited to graduate along with all of the other GCAS scholarship athletes at the GCAS Awards Night on Wednesday 31st October at the RACV Royal Pines Resort. Applications for the 2012/13 program starting in September are expected to be open shortly. Early applicants include 2011 GCAS Awards Winners Katelyn Simpson and Leshay Wells (athletics).

Volleyball (Indoor and Beach) Applications are still open for the Indoor Volleyball program on Tuesday nights that has nearly 40 registered athletes. There are now separate sessions for boys and girls and a regular strength and conditioning component is also built into the program. The GCAS Beach Volleyball program trains at the Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Centre on Wednesday nights. A growing number of keen athletes have been improving their skills and match play during Term 2 and the program is set to expand as summer approaches. The Game Plan With the Board of Directors of the GCAS Part of the mission of a regional academy of sport is to bring athletes and people together from a wide variety of sports to celebrate success. Chairman Hon Mick Veivers and the board of directors are looking forward to hosting the two major GCAS events of the year. The GCAS Golf Challenge sponsored by the RACV Royal Pines Resort is being held on Thursday 28th June. Sports Stars Assist GCAS Athletes

As a not for profit community organisation, the academy is dependent on various levels of sponsorship to be able to deliver ‘golden opportunities through sport’ for the talented sporting youth of the Gold Coast. Additional sponsors will enhance the existing programs and allow for the inclusion of fully supported academy programs such as Volleyball and Basketball in the near future. The GCAS would like to thank the Sharp ABT for their support of office equipment at the GCAS office. Gold Coast Junior Rugby League and E-Z-GO Golf Cars have confirmed their on-going support to the GCAS in 2012. Sponsors have the opportunity to ‘network’ with other community-minded supporting organisations at events such the GCAS Golf Challenge. This year’s Golf Day is hoping to attract around 100 Golf enthusiasts and supporters to the RACV Royal Pines Resort championship course on Thursday 28th June. The 2012 GCAS Awards Night and new ‘Celebrating Success’ Function will be held on Wednesday 31st October at the RACV Royal Pines Resort.
