Griffith University confirms ongoing business partnership The Chairman of the Gold Coast Academy of Sport (GCAS) the Hon Mick Veivers is delighted to announce that Griffith University have confirmed to extend their business partnership with the GCAS into the New Year. Griffith University since 1975 has come to be regarded as one of Australia’s most innovative tertiary institutions and one of the most influential in the Asia-Pacific Region. Griffith offers more than 300 degrees in 4 broad academic groups and also provides support to its own pre-elite athlete students through the Griffith Sports College. “This high level of support will allow for a very robust ongoing business partnership between Griffith University and the GCAS. I am delighted to be working so closely with Griffith University and I thank Professor Ned Pankhurst for his help in ensuring this partnership is built on mutual benefit,” said Veivers. “Griffith University’s support for the Gold Coast Academy of Sport is to be commended and the GCAS looks forward to providing a meaningful placement for its students to complete their required community service as just one of the mutual benefits. Awards Night Recognises Athlete Achievement On October 31st at the RACV Royal Pines Resort, over 400 people were present to recognise last year’s GCAS scholarship athletes for their efforts. Graduation Certificates were presented to all athletes and trophy awards were presented by VIPs to selected athletes to recognise outstanding achievement and to provide encouragement. The recipient of the 2012 Academy Male Athlete of the Year for a second year was Daniel Coleman. Daniel backed up a stellar 2011 by gaining further honours representing Australia in Athletics and Triathlon.
Jessica Roche GCAS Female Athlete of the Year
The GCAS Female Athlete of the Year recipient was Jessica Roche from the Indoor Volleyball program. Jessica had a long list of achievements in 2012 including when she was a member of the winning team of the Queensland Indoor Volleyball Championships and her team were the winners of the inaugural Gold Coast Festivolle of Volleyball. The recipient of the Chairman’s Award was Kenza Benzenati. She hopes one day to represent Australia in Athletics and study medicine at University.

Gold Sport 2013 Sports Program Updates Golf
Applications for first year Introductory program are now open. Sessions for this squad will be offered weekly on Friday afternoons in Term 2 and 3. Applications will close on Friday 8th March. Members of the Advanced squad are now starting their preparations for this year’s Academy Games in Wollongong to be held in April. The GCAS Golf program has the sponsorship support of the RACV Royal Pines Resort and Sporte Leisure clothing and the in-principle support of the Gold Coast District Men’s and Women’s Golf associations.
This year’s GCAS Rugby League program is up and running and a pre-season training camp for 26 athletes took place on January 25-26 at the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre. At the next core education session, all athletes will complete their introductory referees certificate allowing them to give back to the community by refereeing junior matches. The GCAS would like to thank the Queensland Rugby League’s SE QLD Division and Gold Coast District Junior Rugby League for sponsorship of this program.

Future Stars (north Gold Coast) Applications are now open for this program and will close Friday 8th March. The Future Stars program is unique in that it offers further practical and core sports education development opportunities for athletes who do not fit within the criteria of current academy sport programs, more mature aged pre-elite athletes or whose sport is not currently being offered as a GCAS program. Future Stars north athletes will have the pleasure of training over a six-month period at the Sports Super Centre at Runaway Bay and monthly core education sessions. The athletes are expected to be achieving (or aim to achieve with the support of the GCAS) performance benchmarks at either a regional, state or international level.
Football (soccer) Applications are now open for up to 30 male and female athletes aged U/13-U/17. The first training session will be on Wednesday 20th February starting at 6pm on the International Training Field of the RACV Royal Pines Resort. The GCAS Football program is designed to complement the athletes existing participation in the local junior Football competition with additional skill and core education activities. Volleyball (Indoor and Beach) Applications are now open for a total of 32 athletes (boys and girls) aged U/13-U/17 in the GCAS Indoor Volleyball program. Training will be on Tuesday nights at the Trinity Lutheran College starting at 5.30pm. A regular strength and conditioning component will also be built into the program. The Head Coach for girls will be Andrew McCaskill with over 150 games of international coaching experience. The head coach for boys will be former QAS athlete Aaron Alsop. The GCAS Beach Volleyball program will start training on Monday 11th February at the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre starting at 6pm. Athletes are welcome to come along and improve their skills and match play. The program will expand in the lead-up to next summer. Coaches will be former QAS and U/21 Australian champion Adam Thornley and Aaron Alsop.

Basketball The GCAS Basketball program is planning to resume in Term 2 with training sessions being held during term time at the Trinity Lutheran Senior College Campus at Ashmore on Tuesdays from 4.30-6.30pm. The Head Coach will be former Sydney Kings and Melbourne Tigers NBL player Thalo Green. Skill and fitness work development will be offered to the athletes and a camp day during the July school holidays is also planned.

Table Tennis Applications are now open for the GCAS Table Tennis program which is entering its second year. Training sessions are to be held on six selected Sunday afternoons starting February 24th at the Gold Coast Table Tennis Association at Molendinar. Coming Events The GCAS Golf Challenge sponsored by the RACV Royal Pines Resort will be held on Thursday 4th July with a shotgun tee-off from 12pm.
