Gold Coast City Council confirms ongoing support to the Academy The Gold Coast City Council and Business GC have announced their continued outstanding level of funding to the Gold Coast Academy of Sport for a further 12 month period. This ongoing commitment by the Gold Coast City Council and Business GC is allowing the Academy to make confident plans for continuing its existing level of support to regional sport and giving consideration to increasing the number of programs in the coming year. “The support of the Gold Coast City Council and Business GC has been simply outstanding since the Academy launched in 2009,” said Founding Chairman Hon. Michael Veivers. “The Academy with the support of the Gold Coast City Council and other sponsors is developing into a community organisation that the Gold Coast can be truly proud of and all involved including the athletes are most appreciative of this sponsorship,” added Managing Director Ian Robilliard.

GCAS Golf squad excels at the Academy Games The Gold Coast Academy of Sport’s Golf squad of Drew Herbert (Coolangatta-Tweed GC), Conor Bronson (Southport GC), Trent Rhodes (RACV Royal Pines Resort) and Heiko Jeandupeux (Palmer Colonial) have taken out this year’s Academy Games Team’s Challenge on nett scores in Wollongong, NSW. The GCAS squad joined over 800 athletes in Golf, Basketball, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball and Triathlon at this ninth annual showcase of some of the most promising sporting talent in the country. Volleyball (Indoor and Beach)

Applications for first year athletes are still open and the GCAS welcomes to the program new athletes Mitch Dunbar (Gold Coast Country Club), Adrian Rosario (RACV Royal Pines Resort) and Asuna Sugita (Burleigh GC). The GCAS Golf squad is looking forward to next year’s Academy Games to be hosted again by the Illawarra Academy of Sport. The GCAS Golf program has the sponsorship support of the RACV Royal Pines Resort and Sporte Leisure clothing and the in-principle support of the Gold Coast District Men’s and Women’s Golf associations.

39 athletes (boys and girls) aged U/13-U/17 have been inducted into this year’s GCAS Indoor Volleyball program. Training is on Tuesday nights at the Trinity Lutheran College starting at 5.30pm. A regular strength and conditioning component is built into the program with the assistance of Exercise Science students from Griffith University. Pre-elite athletes over the age of 18 are included in a ‘training access’ squad with the support of the GCAS and Gold Coast Volleyball.

Future Stars (north Gold Coast) GCAS Future Stars north athletes have the pleasure of training over a six-month period under sponsorship at the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre. Monthly core education sessions are held with industry professionals such as the Program Coordinator Sonia Weatherley. The athletes are expected to be achieving (or aim to achieve with the support of the GCAS) performance benchmarks at either a regional, state or international level. 2013 squad members - Kenza Benzenati - Athletics, Hayden Harrison - Rugby League, Laura Lucas - Athletics, Olivia Lucas - Athletics, Lauren Nash - Artistic Rollerskating, Lachlan Reardon - Athletics, Jake Watson - Athletics

Beach Volleyball skill development

The GCAS Beach Volleyball program training sessions are on Wednesday nights at the Parklands Indoor Sports Centre (opposite Griffith University) starting at 6pm. 20 athletes have been involved so far improving their skills and match play. The program will expand further in the lead-up to the next summer season of state series tournaments.

Table Tennis The GCAS Table Tennis program provides skill and technique training sessions focusing on advanced singles and doubles match play. The core education program has included sessions on nutrition for sport and strength and conditioning for Table Tennis. GCAS athlete Jake Duffy was recently presented the award for QLD Junior Table Tennis Player of the Year.

Rugby League As part of the core education component of the program, the 30 squad athletes have completed their introductory referees certificate allowing them to give back to the community by refereeing junior matches. The GCAS would like to thank Queensland Rugby League’s SE QLD Division and Gold Coast District Junior Rugby League for sponsorship of this program. Practical training sessions are held monthly during the season and weekly over the off-season.

Gold Sport Triathlon The GCAS Triathlon program has been re-established with the assistance of new Head Coach Liam Bromilow who is a Master of Coaching from Griffith University. Practical sessions will include advice on swimming, cycling and running in Triathlon. The core education program has included sessions on strength and conditioning and Goal Setting. Sessions are held under sponsorship at the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre in partnership with the Future Stars north program.

The Game Plan With the Board of Directors of the GCAS Part of the mission of a regional academy of sport is to bring athletes and people together from a wide variety of sports to celebrate success. A new event was held this year for GCAS coaches and managers together with members of the GCAS board of directors. ‘The Chairman’s Team’ function was held on Wednesday 13th February at the RACV Royal Pines Resort. It was a great opportunity for each sport to outline their plans for the year and share ideas in sport common across all Academy sports. Coming events include the GCAS Golf Challenge sponsored by the RACV Royal Pines Resort will be held on Thursday 4th July with a shotgun tee-off from 12pm. Planning is in process for players to have the opportunity to win a new Jeep Compass valued at $25,000 for a hole in one. It plans to be a great networking day for GCAS sponsors and other attendees. Sponsor a Hole opportunities are available for supporting businesses. Entries will close on Monday 24th June. The GCAS is looking forward to hosting its fourth Awards Night to be held on Wednesday 9th October at the RACV Royal Pines Resort in the Marquis Room starting at 6.30pm.

GCAS athlete Drew Herbert from the Coolangatta-Tweed GC was awarded the leading male Golfer on handicap at the Academy Games. Herbert who was Captain of the Gold Coast team, was able to best tame the windy conditions scoring a 72 net score in a field of over 60 outstanding juniors at the challenging Port Kembla Golf Club course. He backed this up with another solid round at the Wollongong Golf Club. Herbert is also a member of the GCAS Indoor Volleyball program and recently was member of the regional open boys South Coast representative team for the State Championships held on the Gold Coast.
