A family history in fish processing

THE HISTORY OF

NEERLANDIA-URK Neerlandia-Urk is a family-run business that was the cornerstone of Urk’s fish processing industry. This former fishing island has meanwhile developed into the fish centre of Europe. The founders of the company, brothers Herman and Albert Romkes, grew up with fish. They started their own fish processing business in 1972 and thanks to their language skills, they were able to supply high quality North Sea fish across the borders too. That led to the development of long-term relationships with clients, of which many still endure. These are underpinned by mutual trust and satisfaction with the product. Meanwhile, the new generation has taken the reins, and the quality of Neerlandia-Urk’s products is backed by a passionate team. Neerlandia-Urk has a reputation to uphold: only the best is good enough.

IN-HOUSE

PRODUCTION All products have been produced in-house by Neerlandia-Urk since inception of the business. It has been one of the leading fish processing companies in Urk for almost half a century when it comes to North Sea fish. Over 200 employees are dedicated to the processing and supply of fish. In 2000, Neerlandia-Urk moved to new premises with an ultra-modern fish processing facility with its own deepfreeze installation and storage of deep-frozen products. Much North Sea fish is filleted by hand by competent professionals who have grown up with fish. In addition to North Sea fish, a great deal of salmon is also processed, as well as fish caught in the North Atlantic ocean of Canada. Neerlandia-Urk has direct contacts with the producers here. Most products are transported to our clients in Europe, such as Italy, Switzerland, Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Scandinavia, within 48 hours.

Thanks to in-house production, we are able to produce in accordance with the most stringent criteria and we guarantee top quality.

SUSTAINABLE

F IS H I N G & FI SH FA R MI N G Treating our natural resources responsibly so future generations can benefit from the food sources that nature offers us. This is Neerlandia-Urk’s point of departure for production. Caught sustainably with respect for nature. Responsible use of fish resources, so that levels can be maintained and we ensure a stable food source together. We opt for produce that is fully traceable when it comes to the importation of fish too. Our overseas partners also use sustainable, MSC-certified fisheries. Neerlandia-Urk has partnered with the Z300 ‘Sola Gratia’ fishing vessel. This ship is used for various forms of sustainable fishing, fly shooting in winter and twin-rigging in the summer period.

Virtually all our products are caught by sustainable fishing methods.

According to experts, the tastiest fish with a fine structure is caught here. Fish varieties that grace the menus of the most exclusive restaurants, as well as varieties that are part of the weekly or daily diet. Nutritious natural produce that is increasingly valued. Transparency in the production chain is a prerequisite, so you know exactly where the fish was caught and whether it was caught sustainably. North Sea Best represents superior quality, because every step in production is carried out in accordance with stringent hygiene and food safety criteria.

Savour the best the North Sea has to offer.

Historically, Neerlandia-Urk specialised in the processing of North Sea fish, but nowadays, fish is imported from around the whole world. About 20,000 tonnes of fish are processed in the 5,000 m2 production facility every year, of which 95% is designated for export.

PLAICE

has always been one of the most important products and Neerlandia-Urk is one of Europe’s biggest plaice processors. Our own professionals fillet the plaice by hand or process it by machine.

Further processing also takes place in-house. Plaice products are sent to our clients fresh and deep-frozen, with Italy and England being the biggest markets. Neerlandia-Urk is located in the European flounder centre with a weekly supply of plaice. Fish is transported across the whole of Europe by road. Neerlandia-Urk is situated close to Schiphol Airport and the Port of Rotterdam for export to the United States and the rest of the world.

Neerlandia-Urk is Europe’s biggest processor of lemonsole. An appetising fish variety with an exceptionally fine structure. It is with good reason the name of this fish (sole) refers to dover sole, because the texture is virtually smooth and even rather creamy. It is a wonderful product, both baked and steamed. Lemon sole is available all year round but is at its best from June to November. Neerlandia-Urk fillets the lemonsole manually and the fillet is usually skinned. Whole lemonsole can also be supplied skinned.
