October marks National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM) a time to recognize and celebrate the transformative work of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and everyone who supports the mission of restoring movement and improving lives.

The celebration began in the early 1980s as National Physical Therapy Week, created by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) to spotlight the growing importance of physical therapy in modern healthcare. As awareness and appreciation grew, it evolved into a full month-long celebration in 1992, officially recognizing October as National Physical Therapy Month. A month dedicated to honoring just how vital and impactful this profession has become.
Today, NPTM stands as a tribute to the millions of lives touched by physical therapy every year. From helping children reach new developmental milestones, to guiding athletes back to the sports they love, to supporting older adults in regaining confidence after surgery or a fall, physical therapy transforms challenges into triumphs. It empowers stroke survivors to walk again, workers to return to their livelihoods, and patients living with chronic pain to rediscover comfort and independence. Physical therapy changes the course of people’s lives in profound ways. It’s about motion but even more it’s about meaning, resilience, and human connection.
To all our therapists, clinic teams, and support staff across Therapy Partners Group thank you. Every exercise, every encouragement, every act of compassion contributes to a story of healing that matters deeply. Let’s carry this spirit forward not just this month, but every month as we continue to change lives through movement and make every interaction truly unforgettable.

Physical therapy plays a unique and extraordinary role in the improvement in quality of life for breast cancer patients and survivors PT can help these patients return to a healthy, active lifestyle without pain
Fatigue management
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a debilitating, whole-body exhaustion that occurs no matter how much sleep someone gets (1) It is a common side effect of cancer treatment, and can greatly limit daily function Physical therapy may include energy conservation techniques and tailored fitness programs designed to assist in improved cardiopulmonary health and endurance, which has been shown to reduce CRF (2)
Scar management and upper extremity mobility
Whether a patient undergoes a small lumpectomy or a double mastectomy, scar pain does not discriminate and often inhibits full shoulder and thoracic spine range of motion Common treatments for this in physical therapy include manual scar massage, cupping, dry needling, stretches, and mobility exercises (3)
Lymphatic function
When lymph nodes are removed as a means of treating breast cancer, it may cause lymphedema, a swelling disorder related to a poorly functioning lymphatic system Physical therapists can assist patients in compression management with wraps, garments, and pneumatic devices, as well as with manual lymphatic drainage and lifestyle management (4)
Sexual wellness
Treatment of breast cancer often has many negative side effects for a woman’s sexual function, such as vaginal pain and dryness Physical therapists, particularly pelvic health specialists, can offer support by educating patients on tools to reduce pain and improve comfort during intimacy (5)

In an era of polarization, it’s important to remember that some issues transcend ideological lines. The health, safety, and independence of our aging population is one of them
Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, with 1 in 4 Americans aged 65+ experiencing a fall each year. These incidents don’t discriminate among aging Americans, and they affect our grandparents, parents, neighbors, and friends in every community across the nation
That’s why the Stopping Addiction and Falls for the Elderly (SAFE) Act (S. 2612/H.R. 1171) has emerged as a bipartisan opportunity to strengthen access to fall prevention services through physical therapy – helping older adults stay mobile, independent, and out of the hospital.
Falls affect every family. No matter your background, ideology, or family values, aging and fall risks touch the people you love and place them at risk for injury or even death.
Prevention saves money and lives Falls cost the healthcare system billions each year, placing heavy burdens on Medicare, Medicaid, and families’ out-of-pocket expenses By stopping falls before they occur, costs will decrease for everyone Physical therapy works. Evidence shows that strength, balance, and mobility programs led by physical therapists can reduce fall risk by as much as 40%.
At a time when it feels like common ground is hard to find, the SAFE Act reminds us that protecting older Americans is an issue we can all get behind Every policymaker has constituents who will benefit from improved access to fall prevention services Supporting the SAFE Act means fewer injuries, healthier aging, reduced costs, and stronger communities. It’s a rare chance to unite around an issue that impacts us all.
Contact your lawmakers and urge them to support the SAFE Act. Share your stories, your patients’ successes, and the importance of physical therapy in keeping people safe and independent Together, we can make falls prevention a national priority because protecting aging adults is something we can all stand behind
