What is Greenbush?

Greenbush serves learners of all ages by working with schools, communities, and agencies statewide to ensure equal educational opportunities for all.

Greenbush was established in 1976 to help schools accomplish more by working together. Formed as Interlocal No. 609 and legally known as Southeast Kansas Education Service Center, Greenbush has all the rights and privileges of a school district except the power to levy taxes.

Greenbush offers a wide variety of services, with partners paying only for what they need. This entrepreneurial approach has led to more than 40 years of growth and innovation. Greenbush team members operate out of campuses in Girard, Lawrence, and Topeka, in addition to smaller offices located throughout Kansas.

What is LTI?

The Learning Tree Institute at Greenbush (LTI) is an educational foundation established in 1989 as a supporting organization of the Southeast Kansas Education Service Center – Greenbush. LTI is a 501(c)(3) corporation, and its not-for-profit status serves as the vehicle for philanthropic giving by individuals, business partners, and others who share our passion for providing equal educational opportunities for all kids. LTI also serves as a mechanism to manage limited scope contracts.

LTI is governed by a seven-member board appointed annually by the board of directors of the Southeast Kansas Education Service Center. Board members play a critical role in guiding the strategic direction of the foundation.

Since 1989, LTI has supported capital improvements on the main campus, enrichment programs for kids, and new programs and initiatives. In 2020, the Board of Trustees formalized a Strategic Investment process to support growth of people, programs, and ideas. Board members established this process to support Greenbush in filling gaps and accelerating innovative opportunities for children, families, and educators.

The Good People The Good People of Greenbush of Greenbush

Officially one year old in August 2022, The Good People of Greenbush podcast has already boasted some pretty big Greenbush names. As Coordinator of Instructional Resources, Ronnie Williams, states, "Greenbush serves learners of all ages by working with schools, communities, and agencies statewide to ensure equal education opportunities for all. This podcast will focus on the best part of our organization...the people! With nearly 500 employees, we have a lot of good people and this will be a way for us to shed some light on the amazing things that they are doing!"

Over the course of the year Ronnie has spoken with a wide variety of Greenbush's familyranging from Jennifer Taylor from the Specialized Learning Services team, Jim Dillon and Brett Fenton of Teacher Mentoring fame, Director of Greenbush Virtual Academy, Don Grosdidier, and many more! In December of 2021, Ronnie met with Danny Anderson, a former member of the Greenbush Board who has been serving since 2018 and who recently had his last official meeting December 15, 2021.

Danny and Ronnie's conversation spanned across decades - from Danny's education in the 1940s in his hometown of Riverton, to his years

teaching science at the same high school he graduated from, to his work with Greenbush both as a member of our many consortiums to his tenure as a board member. Though he himself has done such great work, Danny stays humble saying, "[Greenbush is] a leader and our legislators look to them as a guide for many things going on. I'm awestruck by what they've done and understand [that this company] is a tremendously powerful organization for education."

With Ronnie Williams

RW: Looking back on your time on the Greenbush board and thinking about some challenging and rewarding times you ' ve hadwhenever you look back on your times as a service member on the Greenbush board, what are some things that stick out to you?

DA: I've been very appreciative to work with the board and the directors because they bend over backwards trying to be accommodating in what they do, but I was awestruck by just how big Greenbush is. They have got their hands in so many different things that are going on in education. I am awestruck by the fact that Greenbush has over the last 30 years become such a prominent grouping of consortiums in the state of Kansas and outside Kansas. I can't begin to even fathom all of the different things they do. Whether it's helping children with reading disabilities or supplementing education in our prisons so that those incarcerated have a chance when they get back out - it's not just a small organization. Greenbush people are there to help. That's what it's all about.

RW: Yeah, it is. That's what it's all about and you started school in 1949 at Riverton. There's been a couple of years between then and now so I'm curious. If I was to bestow upon you a magic wand and you could change one thing about education, what would that one thing be?

DA: That is a tough question because there are so many things that I would like to see changed. What I would like to see most is a level playing field. In other words, that doesn't mean that they don't have to learn the same thing because that's not what education is all about - we learn

different things, but having the opportunity to learn is the same they all need to have. I'm not talking about money, I'm talking about opportunities. What I would like to see is mom and dad at home telling them that education is a way of life that will improve your life and not just a college degree, I'm talking about technical colleges as well. Everything you have is a gift, let's use it.

RW: I love it. Like you said, everything that you have is a gift, but leveling that playing field is so crucial. If all of those kids could go home to that safe environment, they could come to school feeling positive about things and that parents would push the importance of education in one ' s life, then I think that would be something that can really improve our educational system and our society.

DA: I didn't come from an ordinary family. Neither my mom or dad had a formal education, but do you know what they made us kids cherish most in life? Getting an education. In our family there were 13 of us - four girls and nine boysand, out of us, six of us ended up with a college degree and advanced degrees and the others specialized in technical areas. My dad encouraged us that education is something you can take with you forever. My mother had to struggle very hard to get her education - what she did get - so it was something we learned at a very early age to cherish. I've loved [education] ever since.
