editor's note This is the final issue of the GVA Star for the year. I am disheartened to announce this because I had so much fun this go around! This final issue is a bit animal-centric, but who doesn’t love animals?

We’ve got an interview piece with a volunteer from the KC Pet Project, so hopefully that will give you plenty of information about a great local cause! We’ve also got a piece on a more global topic, along with an interactive piece we reached out to the GVA community for a response to, and we definitely got some.

With the last issue arriving, we also have the end of the school year fast approaching. This means graduation for many, and we haven’t forgotten you! The end of the school year also means time for the summer, endless heat that makes you wish for winter again, and fun. This could mean going to the beach or vacationing. It could also mean taking refuge indoors with the A/C cranked up and a nice nap in the future.

Whatever it is, I hope you enjoy your free time over the summer months as well as I hope you enjoy the final issue of the GVA Star for the year.

Interest Pique

By Journey C. This is a segment where we talk and review things, which could be anything, ranging from video games and shows to music and books, and even pop culture. In this edition, we are going to discuss a series near and dear to me.

Keeper of the Lost Cities Keeper of the Lost Cities is a story of its own. read before. The main character wasn’t an ordinary girl until one day. No. She wasn’t led to believe by anyone that she was different.

She just knew. This story is like Harry Potter on another level. Magic is abundant; but so is tech. Unlike Harry Potter, you aren’t just transported to another world of the magical Dark Ages separate of the modern world.

You would be mistaken to come to that blind conclusion, mi amigo. Instead, the world of KOTLC works in tandem with technology and, though in the shadows, the human world.

I finished this series in less than a year, from book one to the current one, Stellarlune. That should immediately tell you how much of a bookworm I am. Each book easily ranges anywhere from 500-800+ pages. But it is SO WORTH IT!!

General Story in the Beginning Sophie Foster is twelve years old in book one.

She ages, and I’d say she’s roughly sixteen by Stellarlune. Anyways, Sophie knows she has always been different. A photographic memory, being a pre-teen in highschool—oh, and being a telepath. All the normal stuff. One day on a class trip to a museum, a boy catches her eye and vice-versa. This boy is Fitz Vacker, who opens her eyes to the true world, the elven world. At first, she didn’t want to believe him and wanted to think he was insane, but then she accidentally used telekinesis on him and was kinda’ve forced to accept the truth. In a matter of days she left her human family and was washed from their memories. Sophie is really an elf who was hidden amongst humans.

This simple fact is enough to make Sophie Foster very different from other elves, but the differences don’t end there. All elves have some variation of blue eyes, whether they be more navy or teal or baby blue or grayish, they are always some kind of blue. Sophie, however, has brown eyes. Elves don’t eat meat/animals. She is unused to elven clothing, like the capes, tunics and pins/pendants they must wear. She has to wear a Nexus to keep from DYING when light-leaping, which is how the elves travel pretty much everyday. But because of her human upbringing, Sophie also sees how the elven utopia front has many cracks underneath. In the Lost Cities, nothing is just as it seems…

I’ll end it there, but man, this series is so amazing!

Unicorns and alicorns exist. Fluffy, feathery dinosaurs live on animal sanctuaries. Imps are a thing.

And Keefe Sencen will steal your heart. All the other characters are fantastic too, and all the Dexphies and Fitphies and whatever offshoot ships exist after that are fun to see unfurl, but honestly? Team Foster-Keefe will always be better!

Also, even just from description, the foods (especially the sweets and baked goodies!) sound so amazing I get hungry thinking about Mallowmelts and Custardbursts.

If you go through KOTLC Unlocked, which is book 8.5, there are actually some recipes for elven foods made by the author, Shannon Messenger.

In Review…

Keeper of the Lost Cities takes typical imaginings

Not only that, but the intricacies within the worlds are impressive. This is obviously a labor of love by Shannon Messenger. The goblins have an affinity for gold, but not at all in a greedy or negative way. They’re a very noble race. They remind me in a way of the Elite/Sangheili from the Halo franchise. Gnomes share some characteristics from original tales, but they are also something of their own. They look nothing like you might imagine, but are a very passive race by nature. They love plants and rarely sleep since they photosynthesize. The elves are one of my favorite cultures to dissect, though. Their abilities and powers are so cool! Some of them include:

-Vanisher -Hydrokinesis -Flasher -Shade -Polyglot That’s just to name a few off the top of my head. Some of the abilities may seem more obvious than some, but even those have layers to them. Others instantly have more to the surface. They will all be explained and told in time. As I’ve typically done with all things I love and enjoy, I give KOTLC 100/10. It’s definitely a run-do-not-walk. You won’t be sorry. The story, characters, and lore are totally worth it!

Interview questions KC Pet Project is the ‘biggest’ no kill shelter in Kansas City. Thanks to my connections, I was able to contact someone that volunteers at KC Pet Project, and i interviewed them.

Question: How long have you been volunteering Answer: ‘About 8 years’ Question: What kinds of animals does Kc pet project take in?

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals An Introduction to PETA

As mentioned before, they also save many animals.

There have been undercover PETA members who have saved suffering animals like birds, rodents and reptiles from popular pet stores across the world.

They offer many ways that you yourself can be proactive in the mission without getting so involved.

Some ways include going vegetarian/vegan, avoiding clothing made from animals and/or derived from them, avoiding chains or companies known to disregard, abuse, or taking advantage of animals.

Always keep an eye out for animals; we may not be able to understand them, but they are always thankful when we help and save them.

Not only does doing this directly help animals, but it also helps in the fight against climate change* and helps the environment.*

Examples of PETA’s Good Work

A dog named Kolyasik from Ukraine was rescued. He was in poor condition inside the war zone. Thankfully, a Ukranian soldier found him and contacted PETA-supported rescuers.

Kolyasik‘s transformation is awe-inspiring. To read more about PETA‘s heroic efforts in Ukraine, visit: https://headlines.peta.org/ukraine-updates/#rescues Wally the dog was not doing well due to a severe case of mange.

PETA has also has many victories over unethical corporations under their belt, too. Recently, they shut down a terrible dog blood bank and saved many dogs that were confined to life in a barren crate. To view more of these amazing triumphs, visit: https://www.peta.org/about-peta/victories/ You don’t always have to plan a day of action to help animals in need or prevent an animal of becoming in need. It’s much easier than you think to help. Although it helps, it isn’t always necessary to completely change your habits to do good. PETA doesn’t discriminate; wild animals, farm animals, and companion animals are all helped

Conclusion: Hopefully this article, in the very least, has given you something to think about.

It doesn’t have to be PETA to help an animal, and helping them is the most important thing surrounding this topic.

Not everything is terrible, either— some zoos around the world are esteemed institutions that are integral to the conservation efforts that go on globally.

The Omaha Zoo in Nebraska, for example, have multiple highly endangered species such as tigers, rhinos, and elephants as part of their conservation programs.

Institutions such as this also aim to educate people on the animal itself and what you can do to help.

Again, hopefully this piece has given some food for thought.

Coconut Macaroons Recipe By: Hibba Q.

You want something sweet, but you don’t have something ready. This dessert is the best. It only takes 30 - 45 min and it makes 20 servings.

Ingredients 14 ounces sweetened shredded coconut 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 extra-large egg whites, at room temperature 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Combine the coconut, condensed milk, and vanilla in a large bowl. Whip the egg whites and salt on high speed in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment until they make medium-firm peaks.

Carefully fold the egg whites into the coconut mixture. Drop the batter onto sheet pans lined with parchment paper using either a 1 3/4-inch diameter ice cream scoop, or 2 teaspoons. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until golden brown. Cool and serve.

All About Me

Who rescued whom?

I am the proud parent of a seventhgrader and and third-grader!

We are very active in sports and academics! However, we all enjoy just hanging out at home with our pets.

For the last three years, I have been a teacher at GVA Middle School! I have loved every minute of learning, growing, and sharing my online adventure with my students.

I became interested in journalism at a very young age. When I was a child, I wanted to be a photojournalist. I was on my middle school and high school journalism team as both a writer and a photographer.

I love to crochet, needlepoint, bake and garden.

My husaband and I like to hunt, fish and hike so we spend as much time outside as we can manage.

Hi my name is Cindy Nickelson, and I'm an ELA teacher with GVA. I'm passionate about education and helping others with reading/writing journey. I've been in education 20 years and taught Special Ed, ELA & Reading.

Fun Fact: We are currently in the processing of remodeling a 1900s era Baptist Church into our dream “Chouse.”

I become interested in journalism in high school where I was active on both the newspaper and yearbook staffs. I attended my 2nd year of college on a journalism scholarship and my associate of arts is in Journalism.

This is my 3rd year with GVA and my 2nd as a journalism sponsor. I love learning and growing with my students.

Last November my father in law ( a Vietnam veteran) was honored with a memorial veteran’s quilt.

Last October we took a trip to Eureka Springs, AR so that pic was taken the Crescent Hotel which is supposedly haunted.

ABOUT ME: I’m Journey C.! I have been the 2023-24 editor-in-chief of the GVA Star.

I also (so far) have written all of the Interest Piques. I love video games, anime, drawing, reading and writing, along with music. My favorite color is red and my favorite drink is coconut water. My Zodiac sign is Ares.

I likely will have my first job this summer at my local library.

Hibba Q About Me I’m a 6th grader. I live in overland park with my parents and older brother. This is my first year in journalism club. My hobbies include photography and baking. My favorite book series is One of Us is Lying. My favorite movie is Gran Turismo. I’m a first generation American. I know four languages. My favorite food is sushi.

In journalism I get to use my creativity. In this role I interview people and get to learn from their perspective. I never get judged about my ideas and the team is very caring.

Hello! I am Grace! I’m in 8th grade, I’ve been in this journalism club for a year. I like to draw and color in my free time. I also like to play video games. I also love anime and motorcycles!
