BATTERY RANGE We know one of the biggest hurdles with electric vehicle ownership, is the concern about how far you can go on a single charge - or ‘range anxiety’.

Obviously, If you are used to the 500+ mile range of a conventional petrol or diesel, being in a position where you have a 200 or 300 mile range can be disconcerting, especially if you are planning on going on a long journey.

However, there is a range of charging options available at a majority of motorway services and supermarkets meaning you don’t need to stray from your intended journey.

Not only this, but given that a lot of electric vehicles (EV) can replenish their batteries in less than half an hour, if you stop every few hundred miles for a break and a coffee already, you are unlikely to notice any difference.

CHARGING We know something else that may seem daunting: how you charge an electric car.

Obviously if you have spent your entire motoring experience going to a petrol station, this can seem like a very confusing process.

However, in actual fact, its a nice and easy procedure that is not too dissimilar from charging your phone.

Before we consider this, we want to familiarise you with the different types of chargers, and where you may find them.

TYPE 2 CHARGER A Type 2 Charger or ‘AC Charger’ is the most common type of charger you will find. This type of charger can charge at different speeds, from 3kW to 22kW, meaning that you can charge your car in as little as 3 hours, depending on the charging unit. This is how you are likely to charge at home, even if you use a 3-pin plug. Because these types of chargers aren’t the quickest, in public, you can often find them for free the only caveat being that you need to bring your own charging cable.

CCS CHARGER A CCS Charger or DC Charger, is found under your Type 2 charge port and is used to charge your car at different speeds, from 50kW all the way up to 350 kW, depending on the charging unit, and your cars capabilities. This means you can charge your car from 0-80% in as little as 17 minutes. You will often find that you have to pay to use these chargers which can cost anywhere from 28p/kWh all the way up to 60p/kWh, which means it could cost you as little as £9.94, to fully replenish your battery using one of these charging units.

CHADEMO CHARGER Some cars don’t have CCS Charging, instead relying on CHAdeMO. This behaves in a similar way to CCS, it is just a different type of charging port. That being said, CCS is becoming the norm now, so there are only a few vehicles on sale with this type of charging system..

How long will it take to charge?

This depends on a lot of different factors, how much power your car is capable of taking at once and how much power the charger is capable of giving.

Your car will have a maximum charging capacity for both AC and DC charging, meaning that for some vehicles, certain chargers may not deliver as much power as they are capable of giving out.

However, this doesn’t stop you from using chargers with higher outputs than your car is capable of receiving, your car is smart enough to only take the maximum power it is designed to receive.

The Octopus Go Tariff allows you to charge your electric vehicle between 11:30 - 5:30 for just 7.5p/kWh - a quarter of the price of a standard variable rate at 28p/kWh. Prices correct as of November 2023

These have a number of different functions:

You can also leave comments about your experience and read other people’s, so that if there is an issue with the charger, then you will know before getting there and use a different one.

How do I charge my electric vehicle at home?

There are two main options for charging your electric vehicle at home:

3 PIN PLUG The easiest way to charge your car is through a three-pin plug. This allows you to charge from home without having a charge point fitted.

The only downside is that this will charge your car at the slowest possible rate however, if you are planning to top up your battery every night this shouldn’t be a problem.

HOME CHARGING UNIT A home charge point can charge your car at a faster rate than a 3 pin plug, and you can choose a model where the wire is attached, making your charging experience more convenient.

Since the government grants have been removed for home charge points, they can be quite expensive to install.

How to use a Public Charger Using a home charger is rather simple, although the process differs slightly depending on which unit you use.

All new public charging units that have been introduced after 2020 have included contactless card payments, however chargers manufactured before this date might not have this option.

If you are ever unsure on how to use a charger, or experience a problem with them, you can contact the customer support line. The customer support line is open 24/7 and is staffed by helpful and knowledgeable customer service agents who can help guide you through the charging process.

JARGON When using, charging, or just shopping for an electric car, there are a few key phrases that are useful to know.

kW

This is a measurement of power that can be used to describe how powerful an electric motor is, and how much power an electric charger can convey.

This is the size of the battery, similar to the engine size on a combustion engine vehicle.

p/kWh

This is the cost of adding a kWh of charge to your battery.

This is the measure of battery efficiency, similar to MPG

CALCULATIONS Unlike with a petrol car, where the cost of a tank of fuel doesn’t vary too much between petrol stations, the cost of charging an electric car can vary depending on various different factors.

Therefore, if you are reliant on public chargers, it is important to work out how much a particular unit will cost you to charge.

In order to do this, you need to do a simple calculation:

Cost per mile Battery Capacity (kWh)

Battery capacity (kWh) divided by vehicle range will help you to work out your efficiency (m/kWh).

Your car will also display this figure.

Then, you will divide the cost to charge (p/kWh) by your efficiency (m/kWh).

This will then give you the cost per mile at this charger, which you can then multiply by your battery capacity (kWh) to work out your full charging cost.
