FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR It’s a real honour to welcome Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (VACT) to Gateway. And, in particular, to be able to present the incomparable Tetsuro Shigematsu in his celebrated show Empire of the Son. VACT was founded in 2000 by Joyce Lam. In a recent interview, Joyce said: VACT was started 18 years ago because I loved attending theatre and it bothered me that there were no Asian Canadian stories or any Asian Canadian actors/characters on stage when Vancouver had a large population of Asian Canadians.

Having laid the foundation for VACT within our community, Joyce handed the reins of Artistic Director to Donna Yamamoto in 2013.

Under Donna’s tenure, VACT has enjoyed triumph after triumph with shows like Minh Ly’s Ga Ting, Loretta Seto’s Dirty Old Woman, and Tetsuro’s Empire of the Son and 1 Hour Photo. Just last week, VACT premiered Loretta Seto’s The Ones We Leave Behind at The Cultch (if you missed it, shame on you! Sign up to be on their mailing list at www.vact.ca.)

The show you’re about to see is an extraordinary piece of storytelling by a magnetic performer. It’s no wonder that Empire of the Son has had an extended life with tour stops in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, St. John’s, Saint John, Calgary, Edmonton, and, just last month, Singapore. After its run at Gateway, Tetsuro and company will be gracing stages in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, and Kamloops. You’re in for a special evening of theatre. Enjoy!

ABout vANCouver ASiAN CANAdiAN tHeAtre Founded in 2001 by Joyce Lam, Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre first began as a community theatre. Over the next 12 years, VACT collaborated with over 500 Asian Canadian theatre artists in over 40 productions.

In 2013, Donna Yamamoto was appointed as Artistic Director. Thus began VACT’s rapid transformation from a community theatre to one of the most exciting diversity-mandated professional theatre companies in Canada.

In October 2015, Empire of the Son had its world premiere as part of The Cultch’s 2015/16 season, and was received with unanimous critical praise. It was remounted the following season, both runs selling out. In Spring 2016, VACT premiered Dirty Old Woman by Chinese Canadian playwright Loretta Seto, in The Cultch’s season with a sold-out run. VACT’s production of Loretta’s new play The Ones We Leave Behind premiered during The Cultch’s 2018/19 season in October. Empire of the Son will kick off its third national tour with this run.

PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES Since 2015, we’ve been traveling far and wide with our show, all across Canada and internationally. So to be able to bring Empire of the Son back home to Vancouver for the third and final time is so meaningful for me because I thought it would never happen.

The first time I performed Empire of the Son in Vancouver at The Cultch for its world premiere felt triumphant. The remount was such a sweet vindication. But this third time feels the most incredible. Performing this show for family, old friends and new, one last time in my hometown feels like a privilege more talented artists than myself never get to enjoy. Big thanks to Jovanni for having Donna, myself and the rest of the team here at Gateway Theatre.

COMPANY Tetsuro Shigematsu

Writer/Performer Tetsuro tells stories across an array of media. He is a playwright, actor, scholar, broadcaster, author, filmmaker, and theatre artist. A former writer for CBC Television’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes, in 2004, he became the first person-ofcolour to host a daily national radio program in Canada when he took over The Roundup on CBC Radio. His most recent theatre work, 1 Hour Photo garnered five Jessie nominations, winning for Significant Artistic Achievement.

His solo work, Empire of the Son was described

Richard Wolfe

Director/Original Concept Dramaturgy Richard is multi-award winning director, dramaturg and specialist in contemporary theatre and performance.

Recent Canadian premieres he’s directed include: Hir by Taylor Mac, The Events by David Greig, 1 Hour Photo by Tetsuro Shigematsu, Long Division by Peter Dickinson, Genetic Drift by Amy Lee Lavoie, The Invisible Hand by Ayad Akhtar, Empire of the Son by Tetsuro Shigematsu and Inside the Seed by Jason Rothery. Some international plays include: Blasted by Sarah Kane, Romans in Britain by Howard Brenton, and Terminus

by Mark O’Rowe. In all, shows he’s directed have received over 68 Jessie nominations for excellence in Vancouver’s professional theatre.

Richard has been Artistic Director of Pi Theatre for the past nine years (richardwolfe.ca).

Donna Yamamoto

Producing Artistic Director Donna Yamamoto has been the Producing Artistic Director of Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (VACT) since 2013.

She has produced a number of world premieres for VACT including their hit show Empire of the Son, by Tetsuro Shigematsu, which is having its third national tour this fall after the Gateway run. She was awarded with the UBCP/ACTRA International Women’s Day honouree, for her outstanding contribution to causes of social justice. Donna was a recipient at the 2016 Jessie Awards for the inaugural Vancouver NOW Representation and Inclusion Award for outstanding leadership in developing work by three Asian-Canadian playwrights in The Cultch’s 2015-2016 season. Many people know Donna by her roles on tv (Hannah Green on THE 100) and film (Deadpool), but her real passion lies in theatre. She says she does the film work to support her theatre habit.

Heidi Taylor

Dramaturg Heidi Taylor is a Vancouverbased dramaturg, director and performer, and Artistic and Executive Director at PTC. She makes sited, devised, and interdisciplinary work, developing performances from first idea through production. Recent projects include am a by Amber Funk Barton and Mindy Parfitt, Tetsuro Shigetmatsu’s Suicide Forest, Zahida Rahemtulla’s The Wrong Bashir, Derek Chan’s Chicken Girl, Ziyian Kwan’s Public and Private, and Carmen Aguirre’s Anywhere But Here. Heidi is Board Treasurer of the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas, and was the founding president of LMDA Canada.

COMPANY Pam Johnson

Set Design Pam is thrilled to be remounting Empire of the Son. This is Pam’s 37th year as a set designer since graduating from Studio 58.

She has designed for, Bard on the Beach, Vancouver Playhouse, Arts Club, and Theatre Calgary, just to name a few. She is a multiple Jessie Award winner, along with a special Career Achievement Award.

Gerald King

Lighting Design Gerald has designed lighting for many local Dance Theatre and Opera Companies.

Sound Design Steve Charles is a composer and performer from Vancouver.

Highlights include: ONCE (Arts Club), Othello (Bard), Love Bomb (Shameless Hussies), Urinetown (Firehall), Brief Encounter (Playhouse/MTC), Dance Marathon (Bluemouth Inc.), The French-Canadian talent show Galala on TV Unis and Pacifique en Chanson. He is a co-founder of the Escape Artists who produced Miss Shakespeare and J.Caesar in 2015 and he continues to perform in their show Chelsea Hotel in theatres across Canada. He tours internationally with bands The Fugitives and Viper Central as a multi-instrumentalist and sound designer. He is very proud to be part of VACT’s Empire of the Son artistic team.

Yvonne Gall

Audio Dramaturg Yvonne Gall is an award winning radio producer and journalist with 35 years’ experience, including 25 years at CBC Radio producing stories and content for all of CBC’s flagship programs.

Remy Siu

Video Design Consultant ( ) is a composer and new media artist based in Vancouver, BC. Recently, his work has involved the construction of automated and variable performance apparatuses that employ light, sound, software, and the body.

He is interested in creating friction and stakes between the performer, the interface, and the system through the use of game mechanics and failure. His output spans chamber music, dance, theatre, installations, and audio-visual work.

Carol Macdonald

Props Master A Vancouver based Props Buyer-Builder-FinderHunter-Gatherer, Carol is thrilled to be dusting off her origami skills for this beautiful show, for which she and Remy Siu were co-nominated for a Jessie award. Carol was part of the creative team for King Of The Yees and The Music Man for Gateway Theatre. Carol is a proud graduate of Studio 58’s Production Program and dedicates this, and all shows to Mom.

Susan Miyagishima

Stage Manager Susan is an accomplished Vancouver-based stage manager, props designer, production manager, and, recently, director. As well as working locally with many of Vancouver’s esteemed theatre companies, she has toured extensively across Canada as well as abroad into the US and Asia. She proudly continues to tour with VACT’s production of Empire of the Son since its debut in 2015 and was a recent joint Jessie Award recipient for the technical design of last year’s production of VACT’s 1 Hour Photo. Susan is a graduate of Studio 58.

Andrew Pye

Technical Director Andrew Pye is a theatrical Lighting Designer and Technical Director based in Vancouver and Toronto.

He works in ballet, modern dance, opera and traditional theatre, and is a two-time Jessie nominee for Small Theatre Lighting Design. GATEWAY THEATRE ABOUT US Gateway Theatre enriches the quality of life in Richmond and surrounding communities by creating outstanding professional theatre and a dynamic hub for the performing arts. Incorporated in 1982, Gateway is a vital member of the theatre scene in the Lower Mainland and is led by Artistic Director Jovanni Sy. Gateway’s professional activity includes a six-show English-language Signature Series, the Pacific Festival of contemporary theatre in Chinese, and a play development program. We also provide theatre education for youth via Gateway Theatre Academy which offers year-round acting, musical theatre, and performance training classes for youth aged 6-18. As a venue, Gateway Theatre also provides much needed rental space for professional and community producers.
