STRAIGHT WHITE MEN

FrOM THE INTErIM PrODuCEr & EXECuTIVE DIrECTOr We are living in a time of seismic shifts of culture, where the status quo is being tipped on its head, and non-conformists within our society are asking to be seen and heard. This isn’t the first time we have experienced these kinds of dramatic changes: as recently as the ‘50’s, ‘60’s and ‘70’s, younger generations rose up to demand peace instead of war, and to fight for civil rights, equality for women, and freer, alternative lifestyles. Then as now, these demands often find expression in music, dance, visual art, and theatre in ways which are rejected by older generations. Change can be uncomfortable to live through, and the fear of loss of control and relevance can cause us to cling to old ideas and perceptions. This production of Straight White Men by Young Jean Lee unabashedly presents these shifts through its opening music, the framing of the story, and the overall questioning of the status quo. In a safe space and for a short time, it brilliantly allows the audience to feel the discomfort that is a daily experience for people who are often marginalized in our society. To see the world from someone else’s viewpoint can be both exciting and unsettling. To have what has generally been accepted as “the way it is” be challenged and subverted can give us the opportunity to question our habitual thought patterns and assumptions. Like waves in the ocean, we are seeing youth lead the charge for change once again (and again and again). While elements of this production may feel alienating, others will feel familiar and reassuring. The magic of Lee’s writing is when the two overlap, and one is left with the sense that things are not quite as they seem. The performance ends with an opportunity to unpack what we have seen. Through a facilitated discussion, we are encouraged to share our thoughts about what we have seen and heard and maybe unravel some of the new ideas and perspectives we are exposed to. We hope you enjoy the experience.

DIRECTORS’ NOTE “I feel like compassion is very out right now. Curiosity is out. What’s in is condemnation and punishment. Now is not the moment for nuance; people do not want it.” - Young Jean Lee We live in such a hyper sensitive time with extreme polar views when it comes to identity politics. In such times, it is difficult to shine light on differences and provide space to encourage new ways of seeing and new ways of talking about privilege. In my work, I’m always interested in reducing the gap of misunderstandings and inviting rigorous discussions through empathy. Straight White Men by Young Jean Lee, does exactly that. It provides a frame in which we can view privilege in a nuanced way. Working on this project with Chelsea Haberlin has been an incredible journey as we have been able to examine our own blind spots and privileges and learn from each other’s lived experiences to enhance the political subtleties that exist in the play. – Fay Nass For the first time in modern history straight white men are a subcategory – they are no longer the assumed default human with everyone else falling to the margins. This idea is a big one for me. As a white person who has been working on theatre centered in identity politics for many years, I was longing for a piece that compassionately yet critically dug into whiteness. I have been deeply immersed in whiteness all of my life and was thrilled by the idea of stepping outside of that and looking at it objectively (as best I could!). Some of the questions my brilliant collaborator Fay and I have returned to again and again: Who’s comfortable? Who’s in the room? Who should be in the room and isn’t? Who dictates what constitutes a meaningful life? How can you escape the politics of your own body? For me, this process has been one of questioning, unlearning, identifying my blind spots, and building new relationships. I hope that this piece offers some of that to you. – Chelsea Haberlin

Playing Fair – what games can teach us about social justice and activism by Julia Peterson

In 1903, an American stenographer, engineer, and activist named Elizabeth Magie applied for a patent for The Landlord’s Game, a board game that she had invented to teach players about economic injustice and the dangers of property consolidation1. At the time, Magie described it as “a practical demonstration of the present system of land grabbing with all its usual outcomes and consequences,” and wrote two sets of rules: one that would allow all players to eventually prosper and another that would create sweeping inequality as the game went on2. Players moved their pieces around a square board that was divided into blocks to represent properties. They could purchase these properties

or, if they landed on a block that another player owned, be forced to pay them rent. If this sounds familiar, it might be because Magie’s economic justice teaching tool was the precursor to a much more well-known game – Monopoly.

A Proud Donor, Corporate Sponsor, Member of the Board of Governors and Past Board Chair

In this way, Straight White Men’s reinvention of Monopoly is true to the game’s social justice history. Drew, Jake, and Matt all grow up playing a board game created by their mother to teach them about power and oppression. She calls the game Privilege and writes rules that penalize oppressive behavior and reward marginalization, such as offering an “unpaid domestic labor bonus” for playing as the iron or the thimble. Like real-life activist game designers, the boys’ mother knows that games present us with an opportunity to learn about complex political concepts and historical events, and create opportunities for dialogue around these ideas. If a player realizes their situation is rigged in a way that they can’t possibly win, they may be better equipped to notice the same injustices on a larger scale once the game is put away. Some game designers hope that if players work together to win against a rigged system, they might build skills that they can use in the real world. In the 1972 board game Class Struggle, “capitalists” start out with unfair advantages, but “workers” are rewarded for fighting back. They can win the game by forming trade unions, organizing rent strikes, and setting up an independent political party3. Professor Bertell Ollman, Class Struggle’s creator, said in 2014 that “as long as there is a class struggle, there is a great need to help young people understand what it is, how it works, and where they fit into it. They are certainly not going to learn any of this from … most of their formal education4.”

keithwestcoasthomes.com

This War of Mine, a video game released in 2014, has players take on the role of civilians living during the 1992-96 Siege of Sarajevo. The goal of the game is simply to survive until the end of the war, and was inspired by the real-life experiences of civilian survivors. Lead game designer Michal Drozdowski said that “we learned about hardships and the horror of that experience. We decided to work around this idea and make something real, something that moves people and makes them think for a second. It’s about time that games, just like any other art form, start talking about important things5.” Another recent game, Rosenstrasse, is set in Berlin during the Nazi rise to power and culminates with the 1943 Rosenstrasse protests. It’s a game for four players, where each player is responsible for playing as two characters, for example one Jewish man who is at risk of deportation, and one non-Jewish woman protester – and as they interact with the game, players learn how the relationships between the real people represented in these archetypes culminated in the only mass protest against the deportation of Jews by Germans in the Third Reich6. With all of the tools of our modern age at our disposal, it is now easier than ever to find games that can inform us about politics and history from many perspectives, including ones that we would be unlikely to encounter in our day-to-day lives due to our location and education. Then we can step away from the board or the screen with an even stronger commitment to fair play than we had going in. 1 Pilon, Mary. “The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World’s Favorite Board Game.” P. 32.
