FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The show you’re about to see is a 1987 Royal Shakespeare Company stage adaptation based on the landmark 1939 MGM movie, The Wizard of Oz. This film itself was an adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s children’s story, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” which was first published in 1900.

The novel is one of the most beloved stories in American literature; the United States Library of Congress declared it “America’s greatest and best-loved home grown fairytale.”

Dealing with such well-known source material poses a daunting challenge for anyone daring to create a new interpretation. Fortunately, we have a remarkable company of actors, musicians, and designers led by the formidable creative team of Barbara Tomasic, Christopher King, and Dawn Ewen. Their wizardry will allow us to enjoy this iconic tale through fresh eyes.

What is it that has made The Wizard of Oz such an enduring favourite around the world?

The story and film strike universal themes that have resonated with audiences for over a hundred years. Dorothy’s search for home is a timeless metaphor not only for the trials of adolescence but also for anyone who has ever felt alone and disenfranchised.

This fantastic children’s adventure has spawned wildly different interpretations and affinities ranging from scholars who have called the novel a political allegory of turn-ofthe-century America (some have even posited that the Cowardly Lion represented William Jennings Bryan), to the film’s profound impact on LGBTQ culture.

Whatever your take on this story, however, at its heart lies a timely message: “There’s no place like home.” I wish you health, happiness, and home this holiday season.

Sometimes, skies are bluest after a storm. We’ve all been at a place in life where something—a force of nature, circumstance, or fate—picks us up and deposits us in a world where everything is new and unfamiliar, and at times it feels almost impossible to find the way home. The tornado can be the storm of adolescence, as in Dorothy’s story; the aging process; an illness; or, for some people in our world, the tornado is much, much worse.

Regardless of the circumstances, we are forced to re-evaluate how we look at 6

the world, at good and evil, and how we are going to get back on our feet. If we are lucky, we get to navigate this journey with friends and family who love us unconditionally, and maybe a cute puppy.

Most certainly, if we look hard enough, we will learn something about ourselves.

I invite you to be swept into Dorothy’s journey over the rainbow, and to be moved by the music and words we all know so well; and maybe, just maybe, at the end of our play, you will find yourself a little bit closer to home.

During the 1970’s and early 1980’s, R.G. performed with numerous companies (Playhouse; Arts Club; Western Canada Theatre), after which he joined the emerging film industry. In 2014, R.G. rejoined the theatre scene in the Royal City Musical Theatre production of Annie. R.G. is very excited and proud to be part of The Wizard Of Oz this season at Gateway.

Allison is eight years old, attends Goh Ballet, Theatrix Youtheatre Society and K&S Dance, and studies music.

Mark and his work are the subject of the upcoming Opus 9 Films documentary, Aim for the Roses, named after Mark’s 2012 album.

Sarah Chang Violin

Sarah earned her BMus at Western Washington University and studied with Walter Schwede.

She later went to Mannes School of Music at The New School in New York City and studied with Sally Thomas. She has performed in the Mannes Repertory Orchestra, UBC Orchestra, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra and National Taiwan University Orchestra.

Susan completed her studies at the University of Toronto. An active freelancer, Susan has performed with the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony, the Canadian Opera Company, the Charlottetown Festival, a North American tour of Fiddler on the Roof, and four tours of China with the Mantovani Orchestra.

Julia Nolan Reeds

Julia maintains a busy career as performer and teacher in Vancouver and beyond. Starting flute and piccolo in high school, she branched out in college to take up and eventually pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in saxophone performance. A new obsession—she also plays the bassoon!

Kevin Woo Reeds

Kevin is a Vancouver- and Lower Mainland-based musician specializing in woodwinds. He attended the UBC School of Music and has played in over 60 productions around the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, including The King and I (Gateway).

Kevin also coaches clarinet for Greater Vancouver Youth Music Academy. www.gvyma.com.

Lawrence Woodall Reeds

Lawrence is thrilled to be playing at Gateway Theatre.

He has toured the world playing musicals, including 42nd Street (Japan); West Side Story (Basel); A Chorus Line (Singapore); Evita (Berlin); and The Music Man (first national U.S. tour). He graduated from Boston’s Berklee College of Music.

Derry has played trumpet for Barbra Streisand, Diana Krall, Michael Bublé, Gladys Night, Natalie Cole, Shirley Bassey, Johnny Mathis, Gino Vannelli, Colin James, The Tragically Hip and numerous others.

He also plays lead trumpet for Ian McDougall’s Big Band; Fred Stride’s West Coast Jazz Orchestra; Jill Townsend Big Band and countless other groups.

Drew is very pleased to be back this year for his second show with Gateway Theatre. Drew plays trombone and tuba in theatre shows all over

the Lower Mainland, and in the last year, you may have heard him in: Hairspray (TUTS); My Fair Lady (RCMT); and The Addams Family (Align Entertainment).

Martin Fisk Percussion

Martin performs in a wide variety of musical styles, including orchestral, contemporary, jazz, chamber, rock, theatre, klezmer and musical theatre. Martin is a member of Fringe Percussion ensemble, and enjoys playing with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Turning Point Ensemble, Vancouver New Music, Red Shift Music Society and Negative Zed.

Ma-Anne Dionisio

Ma-Anne Dionisio became an international star with her portrayal of “Kim” in the original Toronto production of Miss Saigon, a role that earned her nominations for the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1994 and in 2011. Ma-Anne has also performed in London’s West End, at the Stratford Festival, and is an accomplished Broadway performer.

Chris D. King

Chris has been an actor, music director, composer and educator in the Lower Mainland for the last 20 years. Most recently he played “The Baker”—Into the Woods (Fighting Chance) and “Corny Collins”— Hairspray (TUTS).

Caitriona Murphy

Caitriona is a two time Jessie Award Nominee. Her BC credits include: Mary Poppins (Arts Club); Between the Sheets (Pi Theatre); Les Misérables (Chemainus); A Streetcar Named Desire (Theatre North West).

A beautiful woman in a little black dress and pearls, her hair done up in an elegant chignon, invites us into her kitchen. An obsessive to-do lister, the woman prides herself on never letting anything slip by; yet when she inexplicably overlooks an item on her list, we experience her emotional journey through the memory of subsequent events that build to a tragic end.

The List stars the remarkable France Perras, an accomplished bilingual French and English actress for stage, television and film;

playwright; and multiple Jessie Award winner (Outstanding Lead Actress, Outstanding Supporting Actress, and Best Ensemble Performance).

Perras is mesmerizing in the role, delivering a nuanced yet emotionally raw performance that the Vancouver Courier’s Jo Ledingham describes as â€œâ€Śalternating between a sort of aching loneliness and something like glee‌.â€?

The 2008 Governor General’s Literary Award jury described La Liste as “absolutely inspired‌Jennifer Tremblay achieves the universal with economy and lucidity.â€?

This compelling tale of the essential in the ordinary, was translated from the French

by Shelley Tepperman, one of Canada’s most well-regarded play translators (she’s been nominated three times for Canada’s prestigious Governor

General’s Literary Award in Translation, most recently in 2012). The Gateway remount in March 2016 is brought to you by the creative team from the successful, critically acclaimed Ruby Slippers Theatre run in early 2015.
