ROMANTICA BUDAPEST

The Hungarian capital is the perfect destination for winter lovers where you can have a unique experience in the heart of Europe. And an out of the ordinary weekend.

Budapest is a nearby and easy to reach city for a weekend break and is ideal for the budget conscious. But above all, it is a beautiful city. Actually, it’s two. There is Buda and there is Pest, divided by the great blue river, the Danube. And each side has its own reason. Buda is the hilly and oldest part. Dominated by the castle, also known as the Royal Palace, it was the residence of the kings of Hungary, an imposing complex that can be visited by walking along brand new panoramic walkways and going up via comfortable escalators and lifts. Today it houses the National Gallery and the History Museum. The most beautiful point is undoubtedly the Fishermen’s Bastion, a viewpoint on the Buda hill with unmistakable architecture: its seven towers commemorate the seven founding tribes of Hungary. From here you can admire a magnificent panorama over the whole of Pest. A stone’s throw from the castle is one of the most important churches in Budapest, the Matthias Church or Church of Our Lady. The building is grand on the outside, but on the inside it reserves its best surprises: there is no corner that is not decorated with stuccos, stained glass windows and paintings. It is therefore not surprising that it was here that kings and queens were crowned (such as Franz Joseph of Austria and his wife Elisabeth, known by all as Sissi).

Budapest is also known for its ancient springs, exploited since the Middle Ages, and it is right at the base of the Buda hill that one of the most famous structures in all of Europe is located: the Gellért Baths. A true Art Nouveau masterpiece, with ten swimming pools inserted in a wonderful environment decorated with period mosaics and majolica. Pest, on the other hand, is the most modern area of Budapest. This is where the nightclubs are located where you can have aperitifs or go after dinner, especially along the river. And it is also on this bank of the Danube that the Parliament is located, the third largest in the world, and one of the symbols of the city, easily recognizable by its enormous dome. Inside there are almost 700 rooms, some of which can be visited together with the dome. This part

A Port Carved Into Rock

In Sardinia there is a port that is not facing the sea, but is suspended halfway up a rock face. It is Porto Flavia, a daring work built in the 1920s, which allowed the direct loading of minerals on ships, destined for the foundries of Northern Europe. A tunnel about 600 meters long, dug into the rock by miners, emerges on a precipice that offers a breathtaking view of the Iglesiente coast, in the south-western part of the island, and of the evocative Pan di Zucchero stack, a natural monument modeled from time.

On The Love Train

For the route it takes and the landscapes it crosses, it’s said to be the most romantic train in Italy. A journey aboard the VigezzinaCentovalli railway in winter is truly magical. This narrow-gauge railway crosses snow-covered, solitary and silent landscapes between Val Vigezzo, known as the Valley of the Painters because it is loved by landscape architects, and the Centovalli ending in the Canton of Ticino, passing through natural places, as well as villages and towns all worth discovery.

The Most Beautiful Gardens In Italy

On the circuit of Great Italian Gardens present in 13 of our regions, the gardens of the Terre Borromeo, on Lake Maggiore, are the most visited in Italy. Isola Bella, Isola Madre, Rocca di Angera and Parco Pallavicino are part of it and there is an increasing number of visitors who love to practice “horticultural tourism”, an opportunity to be in contact with nature. While in Northern Italy you can visit the gardens in the area open all year round.

Among the most famous is Piazza degli Eroi, unmistakable for its statues representing the founders of the country. Together with the most important artery of Budapest, Andrassy ut, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not far away is also the St. Stephen’s Basilica, the largest religious building in Hungary. But above all, just in the last few months there is the new Ethnographic Museum, one of the most modern buildings in Europe, whose design evokes a pair of slopes that slope down toward the centre, with hanging gardens and unmissable panoramic points.
