Dear guest, Welcome to Yerevan, a city with rich cultural and historical heritage. Yerevan with its warmest feelings is the city where many, once visited, want to come back again. Many tourists acknowledged that the city boasts indescribable force of attraction, which is very often accounted for by the hospitable and friendly attitude of the city and its people. Yerevan is a so-called “base” city for tourists visiting Armenia and Artsakh. This is due to the fact that all major hotels, recreation and culture centers, and the largest airport of the country are in the capital. Not touching upon the details related to the sights of Yerevan and Armenia, I would like to highlight two factors. The first is our inhabitants, who host visitors with special warm and hospitable attitude; they are full of life and humor. The second is that our city is secure and safe for everyone. In this city with a population of more than one million, you can walk at night from the remote suburbs to the city centre and back. In the city centre, in the streets, cafes at any time of day and night you can see young and old people, tourists and locals enjoying their rest.

I think this is exactly what gives Yerevan a specific atmosphere. You have an opportunity to be present in Yerevan in these warm autumn days, when the mild breeze coming from Ararat Plain interflows with the busy city, giving it a special charm. During this season the city hosts manifold international forums and festivals, and most importantly – the city’s foundation day is celebrated in October – Erebuni-Yerevan. This time we will celebrate the 2801st anniversary of the capital together. Once again, I welcome you in Yerevan, a city which is the capital of all Armenians in the world, a city which was proclaimed Book Capital by UNESCO, a city where jazz is a lifestyle, a city where people are very emotional, artistic, proud and hospitable with unique feelings.

Wish you unforgettable moments and a pleasant time. Sincerely,

Hayk Marutyan Mayor of Yerevan

Publisher’s Note Autumn Leaves… While looking through the window of early October day, Frank Sinatra’s famous song come to my mind and I murmured: “The falling leaves, Drift by the window, The autumn leaves. Of red and gold I see your lips. The summer kisses, The sunburned hands I used to hold’’. Welcome to the most comfortable season of the year. It is time when the weather isn’t as hot as in summer months but is still quite warm even at night. Though every season has its unique charm, there is something special about in Armenia. The air temps begin to drop along with the crowds, the colors come out in the countryside. Moreover, October is a month of transition when the harvest offers the best options for food lovers. Are you a fruit lover? This is a great period for you to taste the most delicious and natural fruits like grape, apple, peer, different types of berries, peach, and all GMO – free. Though most of the wineyards are for wine, red, purple and green grapes fill the Armenian markets. The season won’t leave you without festivals and great events.

Wine lovers can taste the fine wines during “Areni Wine Festival” in Areni village of Vayots Dzor region on October the 5th. There will be presented over 100 sorts of wine and restaurants will offer specialties of Armenian and international cuisine. And of course October is a month when our Lovely Capital Yerevan celebrates its birthday. You have a chance to take part in the history making “Erebuni-Yerevan” 2801st anniversary celebrations, being held on the 19th of October. No matter what the weather is like, when there is sun in your heart. Keep that sun up and enjoy your stay in Armenia – the country where everything is possible.

Rome is Old, but Yerevan is Older! You have probably heard that Rome is the first city in the world. But have you ever tried to search for older cities? If not, then congratulations, you’re about to discovering it. Yerevan, the descendant of Erebuni, pre-dates Rome, according to archaeologists. It becomes 2801 years old in 2019. Erebuni was built in 782 BC by one of the greatest kings of Urartu, Argishti the First. And what does the name “Erebuni” mean? Some scientists state the name “Erebuni” denotes “victory”, and some insist it means “free people”. You can also visit museum of Erebuni, where you can find souvenir shop offering the copied miniatures of original exhibits. • Did you know that Yerevan has a birth certificate? It is one of the oldest inscriptions found in Erebuni during excavations, and it is kept at the museum. • Did you know that one of the oldest churches of Yerevan, Katoghike St. Astvatstsin Church dates back to the 17th century, although the oldest inscriptions found on the wall are from the 13th century? We suggest you coming by and seeing an example of the Armenian minimalist architecture. You won’t regret it! • Did you know that a city was found beneath the surface of the Republic Square in Yerevan? These were later explained to be the first floors of the 19th century buildings that were destroyed with the purpose of redoing Yerevan. So, if you have a walk at the Republic Square, try to stop for a minute, imagining the hidden city under your feet. However, there are some buildings preserved and if you want to feel the true spirit of old Yerevan, then we suggest you wandering about Arami and Abovyan streets, nearby the Republic Square. • Last but not least, do you know who the ‘‘Father’’ of Yerevan is? Checking out Cascade, don’t forget to show respect to the working man with a thoughtful look and hands on his desk – the statue of Alexander Tamanian, the architect of Yerevan.

Season of Mulled Wine Open! Armenia is one of the earliest wine-makers in the world. The culture of wine-making evolved here more than 6.100 years ago, according to an archaeological study. Why not to try mulled wine this time? Here the perfect season for mulled wine is the autumn. The German “glühwein”, Scandinavian “gløgg” or Armenian “taq gini” (hot wine) is usually served since the mid of September. The alcoholic consistency and ingredients differ from country to country. In Armenia it is mainly made from Armenian wines (made from endemic grape varieties), orange and

cinnamon. It is a perfect blend of soar and sweet, with a fresh aftertaste. Drinking mulled wine in autumn is more like a ceremony for Armenians: they gather around a table, cover themselves with a soft blanket and enjoy the last warm days in a cozy environment, chatting with each other and listening to relaxing music. Here are some wine houses and restaurants we would suggest you to check out. Please, note that the wine houses are mostly crowded in the evening, so we suggest you reserving a table a day before, preferably.

Wine is good, but Thaiwine is better! Formerly known as “Wine Republic”, now Thaiwine Republic is a marvelous place for both dinner and mulled wine.Thaiwine Republic has two branches. One of them is located near Isahakian-Tamanian crossroad. Here you can have a chill night near the patio heater (blankets provided), and admire the splendid view of Cafesjian’s open air-museum exhibits, Cascade. The second branch is located at the Northern Avenue. This is a spacious restaurant with mixed Armenian, Thai and Chinese interior. “Tapastan” is the place where Armenian cuisine meets Spanish Tapas and starts to create”, reads the story of the wine house. Located at the street where Sarian’s and Tumanian’s museums and the majority of Yerevan’s top wine and beer houses are located, Tapastan offers a warm atmosphere due to its vintagestyle interior, tapas-style dishes and friendly staff. Here you can try mulled wine with Armenian dishes, e.g. the well-known “tzhvzhik” – chopped beef liver, etc. If you want to relax at the end of the day and at the same time you are a wine lover, this is a right place for you to stop by. All wood and wine! If you’re not only a wine lover, but also appreciate the aesthetic value of wine bottles, this place is for you. “In Vino” is the first wine club, merchant and bar in Armenia and a cozy place for friendly meetings. It is located at Sarian street. European cuisine is predominant in their menu. “For us, wine is not only a beverage. It’s a relationship with philosophy and history of the land where it was made,” reads their story.

Education as the Priority of the Country! Armenians have always put a big stress on education. You will hardly find a single person not having high school education degree. Armenia is full member of the Bologna Process / European higher education area since 2005. There are many types of institutions, such as universities, institutes, academies and a conservatory, that provide higher education. American University of Armenia was founded in 1991, in the first year of Armenian’s independence, by the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU), the University of California (UC), and the Armenian government. Cult Talk Tigran Mansurian - Mr. Mansurian, I have heard many times that you love Gyumri. Was it your childhood longing or something else about Gyumri? - In 1947, when we came to Armenia from Beirut with our family, we appeared in the field of Shirak, initially it was Artik. I have a very close connection with Gyumri, I have studied at the musical college there. Here the air is fresh, water is very cold, and Mount Aragats reins everywhere. The same preciseness is present in human relationships as well, although sometimes the cold that mountain brings makes people become warmer towards each other. And I like that very warmth in the people of Gyumri. I have felt that warmth very often, especially throughout the difficult years. So, the city is dear to me. - There is boundless sun and warmth in all your compositions. From where Mansurian gets all his share of sun and reach our souls? - To tell the truth, I myself do not know that my music is sunny, because I try to be the true one in my music. One, who comes from reality, one, who comes from his roots. And the fact that my music is sunny, the listener has to say.

- You know that there is always light in your sadness, that is to say, even if it is a sad music at the end it shows that there is a glimmer of light and that piece of light leads us all to it. - You know it was my mother who always spoke about such kind of values – kindness, bright sadness, light. I may have inherited it from her. She tasted all cruelty of life: orphanage, genocide, but she was always bright and vibrant. And one day when my mother lay in the hospital, when it turned to be her last days, a lady, lying in the hospital with her, said: “Your mother is noble. She is always ready to share what she has with us.” - If you characterize yourself with any of your compositions, which one would you chose? - You know in 1954, I bought the first published book of Eghishe Charents and since the first book I became very attached to Charents. From all my beloved writers, both Armenian and international, I would name Charents on the first place. There was a time when I wrote a series of ten poems throughout 5 years. It consisted of 4 parts: “Arvest Kertutyan” (‘‘Art of Creation’’), a row of choral songs. Charents has written 2 “Arvest Kertutyan” (‘‘Art of Creation’’) poetry collections. He named one of them “Arvest Kertutyan” and the other “Ars Poetica”. I took both names and made them mine. Sometimes I name this row “Arvest Kertutyan” and sometimes “Ars Poetica”. These ten poems mirror the life of Charents. I think if there was something to present me, then perhaps this would be the best one. October 2019 | www.ArmeniaTourInfo.com

without attending a musical school. This has been my personal issue, consequently it is pleasing when passing through this path – a path of studying, selfsustaining, being always responsible, becoming rich and always being a researcher – gives results, but it was also a cruel path.

- Maestro, what is the main thing for you in music? - The first condition is to have as much natural music as possible. I prefer music to be music first and foremost, and to be untranslatable, so that we know that its conversion into words is always approximate and incomplete. Another important condition is to be honest in music. When I look back and examine my works, I always have a remark, regarding my age and experience now. But there are things having emerged right the way they were and neglect my cleverness today. There are pieces from my young ages that can neglect the experience and maturity of my current age. I like them very much, too, because they are the result of the crazy youth and again and again we come to the values that are not translatable. - What has your music given to you and what has it “taken away” from you? - If it weren’t music, my existence would be completely meaningless and unnecessary. So, it has given me only me, a meaning to live for. But as long as it has been my personal issue, I have lived a life owing to it always. I have always studied for it, and not only music, which is a rich field, I have studied notation and theory of music by myself

- And the last question. Because we present the sector of tourism, I would like you to give an advice to people who want to travel. Why to choose Armenia? What will they see, what will they receive, what will they take from Armenia that they won’t take from any other country? - Armenia is a country, which has no inclination to show off. It is not a show-off, it is one requiring loyalty, attention and critical thinking. I don’t mean intellectual, analytical thinking, I mean the quality of being interested in it. If you provide this, then Armenia will open itself to you. There are countries that are open externally and amaze people from the very first communication. Armenia can be like this, but it is far more interesting in depth and worth discovering - both nature and cultural values and human relationships. - Dear Mr. Mansurian, unfortunately, few people are left in Armenia and in the world that can give you everything without taking anything. So, stay healthy and always be by our side! - I am deeply thankful to you! It seems this appeared to be a good conversation. Wish you and your readers all the best.

Historical Gyumri on the Center of Events Well-preserved 18th and 19th century buildings, unique and detailed architecture, an axis of inborn humor, a place where art and literature meet, spicy and exceptional cuisine, Armenia’s second largest city, and from now on – a place where the 28th Independence Day of Armenia was celebrated yes, this is Gyumri. The 28th Independence Day events enlivened the city, becoming a magnet for both Armenian citizens and tourists from different countries. The celebration offered a large variety of events intended both for children and parents, young and old people. In the evening, the emotions were burning on the pitch as the gala concert started, luring people with colorful lights and heartwarming sounds.

If you have skipped the mentioned events, but you are still thinking of visiting Gyumri, here are the top places and events that we would suggest you to check out in October! Being the birthplace of the most popular and adored actors of the Soviet and contemporary Armenia, Mher Mkrtchyan (Frunzik), Gyumri is famed for its outstanding and historical theatre. You can visit Gyumri Dramatic Theatre and watch a play called “The Eyes of a Blue Dog” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez on October 5, 6, 11, 20. If you are a humanist, then you might be interested in “Aregak” (‘‘Little Sun’’) bakery and café! This is the first ever inclusive café in Gyumri, where the young people with disabilities and the parents of disabled children work. Located at the center of Gyumri, right beside Kirk Kerkorian’s statue, Aregak is a nice place to stop by and have a cup of coffee and a crispy new-baked croissant (takeaway available).

Heard about Martiros Saryan, one of the greatest Armenian painters? Or maybe Avetik Isahakyan, one of the most prominent Armenian poets? If you travel to Gyumri by train on 27th of October, you’ll have the chance to get acquainted with them, as there will be the exhibition of Saryan’s paintings all the ways to Gyumri, and the recital of Isahakyan’s works by the heroes of his poems will take place when reaching the destination. Thinking about where to stop? We highly recommend you the “Olympic Hotel”, located at 49 Mher Mkrtchyan street, with a beautiful view of the nearby mountains. Besides well equipped rooms, there are also lounge bar, karaoke club, sport zone, cultural center and conferance hall. The hotel is a wonderful place for having a rest after a long walk in Gyumri. Gyumri is home for culture. Many talented Armenians were born here. You can witness it by taking a walk through Varpetats street, where you will find the house-museums of Armenian poets Avetik Isahakyan, Hovhannes Shiraz and actor Mher Mkrtchyan. The museums have preserved the style and spirit of the time when the masters lived, as well as their personal belongings. The museums provide English tour-guides, that will tell you the stories of these prominent Armenians. If translated, “Varpetats street” is “the street of the masters”.

Gyumri is waiting for you!

Mher Mkrtchyan and His Art Whenever you ask any Armenian for the name of a talented Armenian actor, the first one, which will come out, will be the name of Frunzhik (Mher) Mkrtchyan. Mher Mkrtchyan, born on 4 July 1930 (in Gyumri), was an Armenian stage and film actor. Museum of Mher Mkrtchyan is situated in Gyumri, in the warmest corner of Armenia. Some of his most famous movies were filmed in Leninakan (Gyumri), including “The Tango of Our Childhood”, which was directed by Albert Mkrtchyan (Mher Mkrtchyan’s brother). His museum is located on Rustaveli Street in a 20th century building, made of black tuff. One of the saddest thing about the museum is that it was badly damaged during the 1988 earthquake. However, every bad end has its happy beginning. Rustaveli street was reconstructed and Mher Mkrtchyan’s museum was opened in 2004. The museum preserves the life and career events of the great actor. It is of high importance to mention that spiritual piano music evenings are organized in the museum by local Gyumri pianists. Thereby, such a great person will always remain in a history of Armenian cinematography as well as in the history of Armenia, with his exciting sad eyes and his huge nose!
