Independence and sovereignty is highly valued and celebrated in any country of the world. Armenia is no exception. Independence is sacred to Armenians. September 21st marks the 30th year of Armenia’s Independence. On this very special occasion, let us reflect on the history of the Armenian Independence. Armenia has gained its first independence on May 28, 1918, with the formation of the First Republic of Armenia. However, a short while afterwards – in 1920, the Bolsheviks took the lead. As the majority of you know, Armenia has been a member of the Soviet Union from 1920 to 1991. Those were years of relative peace for Armenia, but communism, totalitarian regime with speech and privacy restrictions, suppressions and exiles dominated. Religion was mainly banned. Private ownership was also prohibited. MarxismLeninism was the ideology behind the system. Probably all of the above mentioned will seem to you as hell nowadays, but if you happen to talk to older generations in Armenia who have lived at least 10 years in the Soviet era, you’ll find it interesting to hear them saying: “Soviet was a good time, we could live life, we could rest and travel to other countries easily.

On August 23, 1990, Soviet Armenia adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty proclaiming the Armenian SSR abolished and the establishment of the Republic of Armenia. Armenia refused to sign the New Union Treaty. On September 21, 1991, Armenian people voted in favor of independence from the Soviet Union in a referendum. Formally, Armenia became independent on December 26, when the USSR was ultimately dissolved. If you ask an Armenian, “What’s your favorite place to visit in the summer,” “Lake Sevan” will be the answer for the majority of cases. This lake has historically always been in the territory of Armenia. Several Armenian and foreign historiographers and travelers have mentioned about it in their works, such as Friedrich Parrot, a Baltic-German naturalist and an explorer, Jean Chardin, French jeweler and traveler, etc. The surrounding area of Lake Sevan has a major historical significance, as it has been one of the oldest habitats of ethnic Armenians. The area is being examined by archaeologists from the Soviet era until today. The historical monuments include Cyclopean masonry, crossstones, graveyards, medieval churches and monasteries, pit-houses, etc. The lake provides not only the significant part of drinkable water, but also 90% of the fish catch in Armenia. Economic Engine for a Fading Village in Armenia Kalavan, a modest untouched village dashing towards an exceptional success, is located in Gegharkunik Region, Armenia. Artsakh War: Past and Present TIME TO HEAL Karabakh or Artsakh, an ancient Armenian land, has always been under the spotlight, for it is a land of abundance, hospitality, unrepeated and ancient culture, history, splendid nature, unique cuisine and magnificent atmosphere. You can often hear Armenians say: “Artsakh is the second Switzerland.” And tourists visiting Artsakh have sealed this argument. Tourism comprised a weighty part of Artsakh’s GDP before 2020. In 2019, for example, the country hosted 42.000 tourists from over 86 countries. However, the Covid-19 pandemic and the 44-day war, known as the Second Artsakh War in 2020, ruined this fast-growing success dropping the above number for up to 94%. September 27, 2021, marks the first year since the start of the Second Artsakh War. Artsakh lost over 75% of its territory to Azerbaijan. Although there is a truce signed and the Russian peacekeeping mission is standing on the line of contact, the tourist flow still remains at its minimum. Artsakh people is devastated and heartbroken as they were deprived of their right to self-determination, killed on their own motherland and forcibly displaced. Despite the consequences of the war, the majority of Artsakh people have returned to their homes in the territories which have defacto remained Armenian and go on living and creating there. In addition, there are Armenian citizens and diasporans who have moved to Artsakh to start businesses and

support the people there. The Government of Artsakh, on its turn, is taking steps to secure the foreign citizens’ entry into the country and boost tourism industry. For now, Artsakh’s tourism sector is mainly leaning on the Armenian citizens. The Government of Artsakh has initiated subsidized tours to the House-Museum of Nikol Duman, as well as Gandzasar and Amaras monasteries to bring in even more tourists until the end of August. The tours cost under a dollar – 500 Armenian drams. Artsakh still has to offer you mesmerizing and mind-blowing experiences and views, tastes and flavors, as well as business opportunities. Until the borders are open again for all tourists, you can get acquainted with the culture of Artsakh in Armenia through the various products MADE IN ARTSAKH, starting from handmade dolls in national costumes, ending with wine and dried fruit. As a travel magazine, we will henceforth do our best to provide you with the ways you can become a part of the recovery of Artsakh and the rehabilitation of the Artsakh people. One way to do that is to introduce you to the products and businesses established by Artsakh people. Time to heal!

100 Houses in Artsakh The Public Television of Armenia and the Artsakh Living Foundation are implementing the ‘100 Houses in Artsakh’ project. The aim of the project is to provide Artsakh Armenians who have lost their homes during the Second Artsakh War with apartments. The apartments are constructed in the nearby area of Dahrav village in Askeran region, 16 kilometers away from Stepanakert, the capital of Artsakh. The project was launched in June, 2021. “We came to rebuild Artsakh again, to see it even stronger. We want Artsakh to be rebuilt, to become stronger, because this desire in our hearts brought us here today,” says Ani Zakaryan, TV commentator and project participant. The roads of the district and the foundations of the settlements are being built by the order of the Artsakh Government. For further construction, the First Channel expects the participation of partner organizations and all Armenians. Each house requires AMD 10 million (about $20 000), it is about fastassembled houses. Donations are made through the Living Artsakh Foundation.

“The district will have 100 houses with 3 and 4 rooms, there will be plots of land for cultivation, and public buildings will include a school, a kindergarten, a park and other infrastructures,” says Vladimir Petrosyan, director of the engineering company. Public buildings are also planned in the new settlement. The displaced families currently rent their apartments in Artsakh and Armenia. Many of them cannot afford rent as they have two and more children. Hopefully, the project will enable them to have a roof and a safe place to live and raise their children. The Public TV has given everyone an opportunity to follow the process of the district’s construction on TV. This will also play a role in fundraising.
